S

tation Road Gardens is very much in the spotlight this month. As you can read on page 42, Billingshurst Parish Council has entered the Gardens into the Best Small Park Competition run by South & South East in Bloom. Whether we win or not doesn’t alter the fact that we have a beautiful facility right on our doorstop to enjoy. And, if that weren’t enough, the Gardens are the venue for the inaugural Lark in the Park event on 16th July where there will be music, food and fun for all the family. Be there from 2pm and bring a picnic! Full details on page 5. Grahame Cover: Station Road Gardens is entered into the Best Small Park Competition. Judging takes place on 26th June. Lark in the Park Station Road Gardens, Billingshurst, Sunday 16th July, 2-6pm

L

ark in the Park was the idea of Keith Brown who is the main inspiration behind Station Road Gardens, Billingshurst. He is co-ordinator of the volunteers and key driver of all the new developments there. Following on from the successful talent contest a few years ago lots of people have been asking for another event – and this is it! The idea developed when Keith shared it with regular park users and a planning committee was formed. Lark in the Park is a showcase event for local talent. There was no audition process and all the performers are self-selected. There will be a range of acts spanning all ages from 4-104 (?). Dancers, singers and musicians, including solo acts, choirs and groups. Local band Corvette have agreed to open and close the show and lend us their PA system.

Their lively 60s style music will certainly get the party going. Local businesses The Little CafĂŠ Company and The Fat Cow (ice creams) will be there to sell refreshments, and you are also invited to bring along a picnic. We are looking forward to a relaxed, friendly, family fun afternoon to which the whole community is invited. There is no entrance fee, but there will be a charity collection. We look forward to seeing you there. Sadly if it rains we will have to cancel as there is no cover, so keep your fingers crossed for a lovely day. For more information/ updates watch the Friends of Station Road Gardens Facebook page and the noticeboard at the top of the park. Natalie van de Braam and Jane Cross Corvette consists of Ray Deefholts (guitar, left), Rod Wallace (bass, right) & Dave Piper (Drums). Bookings: 01403 782745

Billingshurst Firefighters: ‘BBQ season is here again!’

O

utdoor activities are often a great way to spend your leisure time but they have their own set of unique fire risks that should not be underestimated. However, some common sense preparation can ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. A barbecue should be a safe and enjoyable experience but it’s all too easy to be distracted when you have friends and family around you whilst cooking. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple safety precautions: •  Make sure your barbecue is in good working order, especially gas barbecues •  Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs •  Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area •  Never leave the barbecue unattended •  Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies •  Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it. After a few weeks of good weather and

hopefully more to come, please just follow these simple tips to keep you, friends and family safe. We don’t want to gate crash the party! The proposed date for our Open Day is 23rd September. We will confirm the date in next month’s Village Tweet. We hope as many of you can come along. New recruit Ronnie has completed his final stages of the recruitment process and is now starting his two-year development folder to become a competent fire fighter. A full update of his first few calls will follow. The last couple of Momday drill nights have been packed with training. We have to make sure we are ready and competent to attend any call we receive. This is why our Monday training nights are so valuable. We check/clean equipment, use the drill tower for ladder drills and set up road traffic collision scenarios. Each fire fighter on station has their individual training programme so lectures and classroom work is just as important as the practical side of being a fire fighter. Coronation Chicken

METHOD

1. Place the chicken into a large saucepan with a tightfitting lid. Cover with water and add the spring onions, garlic, salt and peppercorns. 2. Bring to the boil uncovered and simmer for 30 minutes. Turn the chicken once during this time. Cover with the lid and turn off the heat. Leave for one hour. Remove the chicken, allow to cool completely, and then tear the chicken from the bones and chop into chunks. 3. For the sauce, heat the oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook gently for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Add the curry powder and cook for a further two minutes, stirring well. Add the tomato purée, wine, water and bay leaf. Bring the mixture to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then add the sugar, lemon slices and lemon juice, to taste. Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered, for 5-10 minutes. Strain the sauce through a sieve and set aside to cool. 4. Once cold fold in the mayonnaise and apricot purée, to taste. Add more lemon juice if required and then finally fold in the whipped cream. 5. Arrange the chicken on a large platter, pour the sauce over the top, sprinkle with the coriander and serve immediately, with rice or salad.

Avoid Sticky Situations Jam making is easy with Austen’s Home Hardware

I

’ve been blessed with an abundance of juicy strawberries in the garden this summer, too many to enjoy with fresh cream and a sprinkling of sugar, so I’m making jam with the rest. As with most forms of the culinary arts, there are a few items of equipment that will make light of the task in hand and secure your chances of success. Pop in to see us at Austen’s Home Hardware where you’ll find our in-store display of pans, jars, utensils and accessories that are invaluable not only for making jam but marmalades and chutneys too. A good-quality preserving pan will always be better than any saucepan. Manufactured from stainless steel with a wide flat bottom for even heat distribution (a key element in successful jam making) it will incorporate a carry and tipping handle and pouring lip to minimise the risk of hot spillages and wastage. Most preserving pans are suitable for use on solid plate (Aga type) ranges as well as gas, halogen, ceramic and induction hobs, but do check with us when you buy to

make certain that the pan is right for your appliance. Never ever use aluminium pans for jam making. Acids in the fruit react with the metal and give your jam a tinny taste. Temperature is everything. You need to cook jam quickly and evenly – hence the preserving pan, but you also need to know when it reaches its optimum setting point. So do invest in a jam thermometer to cut out the guesswork. Airtight jars are vital for storing your jam and can easily be decorated with our range of labels and jam pot covers to create that home-made feel which is perfect when giving as a gift. Jam is essentially three ingredients: fruit, sugar and water. The rest is down to alchemy and the proliferation of recipes you can find in all good cookbooks. With the right equipment you can make great use of nature’s bounty. So come and see us at Austen’s Home Hardware Billingshurst for a comprehensive range of jam making products and lots of good free advice. David Lobley

Billingshurst & District Lions Club Giant Easter Eggs

A

s a new venture for the Lions Club giant Easter eggs were distributed to ten local businesses and organisations who had agreed to support the Club in their fund-raising efforts leading up to Easter. Clients of the businesses were invited to select a number on a large board between 1 and 100 in return for a £1 donation. One number was subsequently selected from each board and each lucky person who had signed that box on the board each received one of the Easter eggs as a prize at various times after Easter. It may seem odd to talk about Easter eggs in the summer (!) but we can now report that at the final count a total of over £700 was collected. This money will be donated to the Surrey, Kent and Sussex Air Ambulance ‘Head Scanner’

appeal. The Club wishes to thank the following businesses and organisations that supported us: The Limeburners pub, The Six Bells pub, Barns Green village store, Loxwood Medical Practice, Billy’s on the Road café, News Box, Westons Farm Shop, Billingshurst Barbers, Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre and Skoda Horsham Chris Davis, Publicity Officer, Billingshurst & District Lions Club Photos show just two of the ten winners: (Left) Louise from the Loxwood Medical Practice receives her giant egg from Lion Tim Woodcock and (right) The Limeburners’ Tony Temple with Lion President Peter Coleman and Tim Woodcock

Charity

St Catherine’s Hospice celebrates its loyal and dedicated volunteers

S

t Catherine’s Hospice is shining a light on the significant achievements of their incredible volunteers during national Volunteers Week. Each year, more than 800 volunteers help St Catherine’s deliver their expert end-of-life care and support. Coming from across Sussex and Surrey, volunteers take on 42 varied roles from; gardeners and charity shop assistants, to complementary therapists, caterers, and even a caricature artist! Between them, they volunteer more than 47,000 hours a year and in 2016-2017 alone provided comfort and care by: •  Making 114,400 cups of tea •  Painting 130 sets of patients’ nails •  Giving 144 meditation sessions to help patients manage their illness •  Driving patients to and from St Catherine’s on 110 minibus journeys •  Processing more than 32,000 sales in the hospice’s 16 charity shops, helping raise vital funds so St Catherine’s can be there for people when life comes full circle. Sandra Cramp is just one of the hospice’s many volunteers. She joined St Catherine’s as a volunteer Hospice Host just over a year ago, and alongside other volunteering colleagues, has helped welcome 8,734 relatives to St Catherine’s across the last year. Sandra said, “I thoroughly enjoy working at the hospice and

12

have met some very inspiring and friendly people. There are always people to guide and support us and I feel privileged to belong to such an outstanding local charity.” To thank volunteers for their incredible contributions, St Catherine’s is hosting a volunteers award evening at Tilgate Golf Club on Wednesday 7th June to recognise volunteers who have reached 5, 10, 15 or 20 years’ voluntary service with the local charity. Peter Nesbitt, Volunteering Development Manager at St Catherine’s said, “We are really lucky to be so well supported by volunteers and we couldn’t provide our range of services without them. By giving their time and skills, they’re some of the biggest donors to our hospice and we want to say a huge thank you to every one of them for their unrivalled support. We would especially like to congratulate our volunteers who are reaching a special volunteering milestone with us. Their loyalty and dedication to the hospice, and all the people we care for, makes a huge difference at a difficult time.” If you would like to find out more about current volunteering opportunities at St Catherine’s please visit www.stch.org.uk, call St Catherine’s Volunteering Team on (01293) 447351 or email volunteering@stch.org.uk. Cycling / Health & wellbeing

I Want to Ride My Bicycle…

D

o you remember the thrill of owning your first bike? That sense of freedom and speed? Cycling has increased in popularity again since London 2012 and rightly so – it’s an eco-friendly, sociable and healthy activity. Regular family cycling trips can provide a wealth of new experiences and a sense of adventure and bonding. It’s never too late to start: even if junior is too young for their own bike they will love to travel along with you. Please note that for most trailers and all child bike seats the child should be able to support their own head wearing a cycle helmet. For most children this is between 10-14 months but be sure to take advice from your local cycle specialist. Trailers. These attach to the adult’s bike and may be single or double. They offer some protection from the elements as they can be covered. They can also take children up to 45Kg. An older child has enough space to take along their own snacks and a couple of toys. They can nap in comfort if they wish. The disadvantage of a trailer is its proximity to the ground; it doesn’t afford much of a view. There is also a danger that, if used on the road, some drivers may not see it. Hire before you buy. Most cycle-hire outlets offer a good range. It’s a great way to find out if a trailer is for you. You can buy specialist trailers for babies too

young to travel in child seats or in conventional trailers. The child is securely strapped in and the framework acts as a roll-cage in case of a toppling accident. The beauty of these specialised trailers is that they also convert into a buggy. They’re not recommended for road use though. Child bike seat. These are comfortable and offer a great view as the child is raised up. Choose the seat according to the child’s weight and height rather than age as children vary so much. Carrying a child alters the centre of gravity of the bike so practice on soft ground or in a safe area before you venture out on to the roads. Trailer bikes / Tagalongs. These have one wheel, and a saddle with a curved frame which attaches to the adult bike. The child can peddle or just hitch a ride. For an older child who wants to ride independently but who tires on long cycle rides, you can buy a connector kit to attach their bike to the adult bike. Consult your local dealer for advice. IMPORTANT. No one should travel in a conventional trailer or bike seat unless they are wearing a helmet. Bike seats (and to some extent trailers) leave children exposed to the elements. Wrap them up warm in cold weather, and make sure they’re slathered in sunscreen when it’s sunny. Sarah Davey

Book reviews

A Good Read July’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Little Altars Everywhere – Rebecca Wells One of the marks of a great book is that it can let you travel the world, and even through time, from the comfort of your own living room (or coffee shop – depending on where you are reading). This is exactly what Little Altars Everywhere does. From your familiar surroundings in the UK this transports you to Louisiana in the heart of the southern states of America and throws you into the lives of the Walker family. Siddalee is the eldest daughter in the family and she is the narrator who opens the story. Growing up in the 1960s life is changing around her and it is only as an adult that she can begin to deal with the turbulence of her childhood. Each chapter is told by a different member of the family. There is Vivi, the matriarch, and Shep, a father who tries to provide for his family but is under a lot of pressure and unable to quite express his feelings. Siddalee’s voice is joined by her siblings, Little Shep, Lulu, and Baylor. This is, in many ways, a collection of short stories, each giving a glimpse into life for the Walker clan. From the summers spent in Spring Creek, to dance classes, a pregnant dog, and a runaway daughter, the pieces gradually come together.

Accompanying the family through their experiences are the Ya-Yas: four close friends, including Vivi, who are loud, colourful, and vibrant. But this is not always an easy story to read. Families can hide secrets that the outside world will never know and the consequences won’t be felt for years. The Beast Within – Serena Valentino We all know the story of Beauty and the Beast. Whether it is through the original fairy tale, Disney’s 1991 animated adaptation, or the recent live action remake. But is there something missing from the story? How much do we know about what happened before Belle arrived at the Beast’s castle to rescue her father? What really happened to turn a beloved prince into a reclusive beast? Offering a fresh twist on the classic story, this tween/teen read contains many “Ooh, that’s clever” moments. Of course, we know that at the end of the story Gaston will arrive at the castle to kill the Beast. But suppose they were once best friends? Filled with familiar characters such as Lumiere and Cogsworth, this novel offers another layer to the story we all know. While it is not the greatest work of literature it will definitely appeal to fans of either the animated or live action movie, and is one of a growing series of novels telling the darker side of Disney classics.

Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station An fascinating new volume in the RNLI’s series of Lifeboat Station Histories has just been published: Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station. 96 full-colour pages trace the history of this south coast lifeboat station – geographically the nearest to us. Researched and written by nautical journalist John Periam and Michelle Tugwell (the Lifeboat Station is her second home!) the book describes courageous rescues by Shoreham’s lifeboat which first took to the waves in 1845, manned by brave

16

crewmen, though today’s high-tech boat bears scant resemblence to the 1845 one! The book contains a huge variety of photographs, the most stunning of which are taken by Plaistow photographer Geoffrey Lee. (We reviewed Above The Rest in January 2016: Lee’s study of the Eurofighter Typhoon featuring superb airto-air photographs – a few copies are still available direct from Geoffrey). Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station is priced at just £8.95, email Geoffrey Lee, email: ghlee@planefocus.com

Billingshurst’s Heritage An Historical Miscellany of a West Sussex Village by Geoffrey Lawes

T

his eagerly awaited fully revised edition, combining the two earlier volumes of Billingshurst’s Heritage, (reviewed in Village Tweet, March, July and December 2013), seeks to recall to the reader’s mind the strongflowing stream of life in the history of the village from Paleolithic times to the present day. However, this new book does far more than combine the previous two volumes (though it does that remarkably seamlessly). It includes a wealth of new material and fastidiously researched details of the very latest archaeological revelations of Iron Age exploitation and Roman farmsteads. Now boasting some 400 pages (the previous volumes were 170 and 216 pages), this new edition embraces a multitude of parish characters, their memories, the clubs to which they belonged, the buildings both ancient and modern where they lived and worked, traded and worshipped, the

fields they tilled and roads they trod. The book is not all history; it gives an up-to-date account of the village today, its local management, the richness of its sporting and social life and the many institutions which make Billingshurst such a desirable place to live, to bring up children and to lead a comfortable and fulfilled life where town and country meet. It chronicles the past and describes the present community at work and at play. It touches on future threats and opportunities in a spot which is a commendable place to make a home. It is unlikely that even the best informed resident will not find something new and surprising amid the stories, maps and some 250 illustrations. Highly recommended. Grahame Pearson 400 pages, over 250 illustrations. Available direct from: Geoffrey Lawes, Mill Barn, East St, Billingshurst RH14 9DA (almost opposite St Gabriel’s RC Church). Bedtime stories / About the house

Why We Need Bedtime Stories

I

loved bedtime stories as a child and now I’m enjoying them again with my own children. Bedtime stories are calming, fun and snugly time and those are good enough reasons on their own for indulging. But bedtime stories have other benefits too. Communication. Reading is one of the most important communication tools available to us and is fundamental in establishing essential pathways in the brains of early learners. It enhances basic speech and reading skills, but less obvious skills such as, those required to make friends in the playground, and to concentrate in class. Improved Emotional Understanding. Most of us have cried or laughed at a good book.

Bedtime reading can help us broach difficult topics in a safe environment. We can explore powerful emotions through the medium of fiction. The shared experience of reading together fosters stronger connections and provide topics of conversations well beyond the fifteen minutes at bedtime. Improves imagination and feeds curiosity. The effect of reading on an individual’s imagination is unparalleled. Books allow our children to explore both our world and fictional ones. It can also help to express their individuality and help them discover interests that may not be covered at school. Sarah Davey

Charity Walk / About the house

Charity Walk for the UK Sepsis Trust (UKST)

A

re you aware of Sepsis? My mother-in-law died in July 2015 after contracting Sepsis. She was admitted to hospital after a fall. After a week of treatment the hospital released her into the community healthcare service. Three days later she was readmitted and diagnosed with Sepsis. The hospital tried everything but it was too late. It was at this time we first heard about Sepsis. Looking into it and reading various dreadful stories, we realised this was a silent killer that was little known about and the hospitals and healthcare services appeared not to be up to speed with it. To do my bit for the UK Sepsis Trust (UKST), I am self-funding a 100-mile walk along the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne. I’m doing it on my own and in five days from 2nd to 6th September 2017. The UK Sepsis Trust was established as a charity in 2012 with the objective of saving 12,500 lives every year. They are committed to changing the way the NHS deals with Sepsis, Creating the WOW effect

Every year in the UK there are 150,000 cases of Sepsis, resulting in a staggering 44,000 deaths – that’s more than bowel, breast and prostate cancer combined. Retirement / About the house

Not Ready for Retirement?

E

ven though retirement ages have been increased recently many people find that when the time comes we don’t feel quite ready to down tools and head to the allotment or the golf course. All the knowledge, skills and qualifications we’ve achieved over the years can’t just be switched off, and we might not feel ready to step out of working life entirely. So if the calendar says one thing but our heart and mind disagree, what should we do? Don’t despair – there are in excess of 1.3 million pensioners still in work. We represent 11% of the total workforce, and are living proof that many companies recognise our experience. Staged Retirement. Talk to your boss or line manager in advance of your retirement. Ask if you can stage your retirement over a couple of years, maybe dropping to a three-day week, then two days, etc. Many companies are happy to accommodate loyal employees. Stress that it will make any transitions run more smoothly because you will be able to pass on your knowledge to your replacement and allow them to gradually take over. If you regularly deal with clients it can be very reassuring for them to know that you are still around. Benefits. Find out what your entitlements are. Check out www.direct.gov.uk to find out about pensions, earnings and tax.If you prefer to talk to someone in person on the phone, ensure you have all relevant information to hand: P45, NI Number, etc. Even if you’re only entitled to a few pennies at this stage, the important thing is that you are registered. Other benefits may come

22

your way later. Job-hunting. www.jobcentreguide.co.uk provides an abundance of information on vacancies and also free CV advice, which is especially helpful if you are out of practice in the art of selling yourself to a prospective employer. You can register your CV on line with any number of agencies, such as www.reed.co.uk, which show jobs in your area, and assist with careers advice. If you prefer to register in person, pop into your local Job Centre or Recruitment Agency. These are all positive moves which will help you feel more confident and in control. There are many ways to research information about employment. The library and your local college are good starting points. Libraries often have computer terminals available for public use, and some run courses if your PC skills need polishing. When you get an interview: Be positive. Stress the good reputation of the firm plus other positive information. Play to your strengths. Explain how the skills you’ve acquired throughout your working life will benefit this company. Play down the negatives of retirement. Describe any voluntary work, hobbies studying and training you’ve completed. As an older person, play on your experience and loyalty but… Reassure the employer. You are hard working, flexible and willing to learn. Think of retirement as a fresh start. It may be a chance to reinvent yourself and it’s never too late to land your dream job. Good luck. These enable her to work wet in

Recently Lindsey has been developing more abstract works and her ideas are evolving into new and exciting works. Paul Baden makes wood sculptures inspired by his cartographic roots. Carvings of the human form, maps and exciting contemporary wall reliefs use layered woods to create landscapes for the hand and eyes to explore. Retirement / About the house

Retired? You have just become really valuable!

I

f you have just retired, or are about to, and are wondering how to use your new ‘spare time’ (other than perfecting your golf or cooking every recipe in your back copies of Gourmet magazine), I’d like to offer a suggestion… I found that sharing a lifetime’s commercial experience with local businesses and involvement in community affairs added a new dimension to my village life. Us oldies (and not so oldies) are actually worth our weight in gold – both to our local community and to our ourselves – according to research. A Department for Work and Pensions and Cabinet Office study (www.gov. uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_ data/file/221227/WP112.pdf) calls the latter benefit ‘well-being value’ and estimates that it is worth around £70bn per annum to us frequent formal volunteers. This is based on the amount of monetary compensation that we volunteers would need to maintain our level of ‘well-being’ if we stopped volunteering. The Billingshurst community is very largely run by people in their spare time – the Parish Council, the Community Partnership and the Chamber of Commerce are just three such volunteer-based organisations. Certainly, if I hadn’t replaced my ‘business and thinking time’ with something constructive, rewarding and cerebral, I’d have gone nuts. What did it for me? In my case, the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce and my role representing it at the Billingshurst Community Partnership made an extraordinarily rewarding replacement for my 36 frenetic years in Hong Kong commerce. Comparing the different scales might sound laughable. But it wasn’t. Pretty well the same principles apply whether it is Hong Kong or Horsham, a bank or baker, Billingshurst or BilliFest. It’s mainly the number of noughts that is different. As we move nearer to our grandchildren and my involvement here reduces, I’ll miss these remarkable organisations. It is they that work with the local and district authorities, and other groups, to drive Billingshurst’s community activities today, and those of the future for our children and grandchildren. The Community Partnership delivers projects to

enhance the well-being of Billingshurst and its surroundings. Its sign-off is ‘Together we can, and have, made it happen’, and that says it all. It is made up of 16 or so local groups ranging from the Chamber of Commerce to the Station Road Gardens Association, young people’s and senior citizens’ groups, the Weald School and the Billingshurst Choral Society. Its work address youth and the EYE centre youth project, the environment, local cconomy, social welfare, and arts & culture. It’s a truly eclectic group with the most diverse group of interests, but with Billingshurst as the common theme. These initiatives have enabled me to understand better what makes Billingshurst ‘tick’ now and to be part of teams that are shaping its future, remodelling the High Street, driving youth and welfare activities, and planning the Billingshurst of the 2030s. They have also brought me into contact with some extraordinary young people at The Weald school who will be our next generation of Billingshursters, and with other business players and community groups, with regional publication editors, Councillors and community leaders of all types, and Members of Parliament and Government – all with Billingshurst as the mission, one way or the other. If you want to help ‘make it happen’ now and in the years ahead, there’s certainly a role for you, regardless of how much or how little time you can spare. I’m on (01403) 741391 or martinspurrier@ hotmail.com, or Denise Campbell, BCP Chair, is on 07500 450458 or denise146campbell@gmail.com. We’d love to talk to you. I

have enjoyed travelling for some years and on my first trip to Peru in 2007 I returned determined to learn Spanish. This has prompted me to visit many Spanish speaking countries, particularly South and Central America. During the last two winters, I have taken extended trips to include attendance at Spanish schools in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. This has enabled me to get to know local people and learn about their countries and culture. I have developed an ongoing friendship with one of my guides who lives on Ometepe island Nicaragua. His name is Jose Antonio Ruiz Hernandez. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Central America, after Haiti, and many children complete very few years of schooling. Those who do, have to commit time and effort outside of the normal school day and endure many hardships to pursue their aspirations. Jose experienced these challenges and has gone on to learn two languages and is a local guide. In his early thirties, he is now setting up his own kayak business to provide employment to his local community, Urbaite and offer tourist services. He also teaches local students languages. His story inspired me and his enthusiasm for life and learning was so positive, yet he described how he had been unable to attend his graduations his parents could not afford new clothes. I decided to help him move his plans forward and he wanted me to return to see his progress. We are also trying to organise for him to visit England some time. I have arranged to return to Ometepe Island in January 2018 for nearly five weeks; Jose has organised for me to visit and volunteer in the schools so I can support the children with learning English and help in other local community facilities. I plan to take small items of

stationery and provide school clothing for families in need. I would also like to be able to take funds that might help them purchase computer equipment and sports items locally as these items are lower cost there and purchases would help the local economy. My travels there have made me feel embarrassed by the luxuries we have available on a daily basis here, and as a responsible traveller I want to improve the life opportunities of some very aspirational young people. The children in the Rafael Herrera Primary School have to borrow a football and have no kit to play against other schools. The headteacher handwrote a letter which Jose photographed in order to send a communication to me. There is no equipment and only basic buildings. I have spent forty years working in our education system, as a teacher, headteacher and adviser, and realise what a disadvantage these children have. I plan to use my arts and crafts sales to support this activity (my work can be seen on 2newhorizonsinart.blogspot.com), to save funds that I gain from money saving vouchers, my pension and savings, and kind donations from friends, family and any other organisations. The project is involving me in more new learning. I am taking a TEFL course and have started to take motorcycle lessons to enable me to have transportation on the island! If you are interested in helping in any way at all or would like to discuss this project, please contact me. Guilty secrets in the vicarage garden

G

race, an acid-tongued and recently widowed vicar’s wife,is in mourning for her husband and about to be turfed out of the English country vicarage by the incoming vicar. With the loss of her beloved husband life will change forever, and after so many years of being the dutiful and busy vicar’s wife she is now bereft of husband, home and job. What was the point of it all? This is the setting for the latest play by Billingshurst Dramatic Society – ENTERTAINING ANGELS by Richard Everett – which is being performed in July. It is a witty, touching perceptive and funny play and before long secrets come tumbling out of the closet and confessions are being made. Laughter constantly bubbles to the surface yet in between there are depths of vulnerability and grief that are

intensely moving. Unwilling to let go of her past Grace constantly converses with her deceased husband – mainly in the greenhouse or by the stream – and the ghost of the old vicar haunts the action. Further confessions are made by the new vicar, Grace’s daughter and her eccentric missionary sister. She has arrived from Africa, but during the sisterly bickering, recalling resentments from childhood, a dark secret is revealed. Caro Anderson Performances of Entertaining Angels take place at The Womens’ Hall, Billingshurst on Thursday 20th July, Friday 21st July and Saturday 22nd July at 7.45pm. Tickets £10 from Mansell McTaggarts estate agent, Billingshurst (just call in, no phone calls please) or book online at www.billingshurstdramaticsociety.com

Angling… Nash fails to be hooked John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

think, now that I have passed from the active time of my life and have moved into a more calm and peaceful period, I perhaps should reflect on that most energetic of sports… angling. What sight looks more appealing on a warm summer’s day than the vision of a fisherman seated on the banks of a cool, sparkling waterway, the sun warming his back as he gazes in apparent deep thought at the little bobbing float for hours… and hours…and hours! I must confess that I have never been what you might call a keen fisherman. This reluctance to take up this pastime in any positive way can be traced back to a holiday in Devon long ago when I was foolish enough to book a trip to go mackerel fishing. The ride out of the harbour was a delight, the slightly bumpy trip to deeper water very enjoyable. Then we stopped to fish. The little boat took on a rather disconcerting life of its own. The front end went up and down and the wretched thing rolled from side to side at the same time. Most on board found this either amusing or seemed to not notice it altogether. Within a very short time, however, I found myself throwing ground bait over the side in large quantities – mainly consisting of my mixed grill lunch! Interestingly, this seemed to be contagious, and in a very short time I had several other companions joining me. Fishing was abandoned as a bad job and we spent a pleasant two hours chugging around the near harbour area until our allotted time was up. That was my one and only venture into sea fishing. So on to that other type… course fishing. Why course? Because it’s not regarded as so refined as its saltwater companion, or perhaps it’s from using water courses? Must look it up some time when the urge comes over me. I have been very fortunate in my time in farming in that I have either lived by a river or, for the last 50 years, by a large reservoir. This has given me every opportunity to fish to my heart’s content. Alas, it was not to be. I’m afraid that despite many attempts, I find the whole event a complete bore. Sorry to you keen anglers out there, but I find myself watching with great amazement as those

32

who love the sport unload their equipment from their cars at the break of day. (Some even spend the whole night at the water’s edge – I prefer the warmth of my bed.) They haul a mountain of rods, bags, boxes and brollies along to their favourite spots and there they set up for the day’s angling. From an assortment of little boxes appear maggots of every colour imaginable, along with bread, luncheon meat and sweetcorn. All destined to be hung on a hook and slowly drowned into submission or to be eaten by some unsuspecting passing fish. Most participants seem far from content with one rod. A little barrage of rods lie on their rests, their floats bobbing in the glinting water, eyes peeled watching each one in turn, waiting for that tell tail ‘knock’ that informs the rod’s owner that some hidden creature is checking out their lure for a prospective snack. Gets you on the edge of your seats, don’t it? Personally I found that the constant bobbing of the floats distracted me from the overwhelming urge to have a doze. Still, each to his own. I did, just once, contemplate eating the fish that I had caught. I had been warned, by those who knew, that course fish had an earthy taste unless they were given a 24-hour freshwater bath first. This apparently would clear the muddy taste from them, and idiot that I am, I believed them… So, I caught a lovely great bream. A bottom feeder I was told. We carefully put him in a bucket and took him home to give him a bath – literally. I filled our bath with fresh, clean water, put him in, and awaited the great transformation. I’m afraid, dear friends, that after soaking overnight, and splashing copious amounts of water around the bathroom as he swam back and forth, as far as we could tell, he hadn’t improved. In fact he had given the whole bathroom a particularly pungent aroma that encouraged the wife to insist he be returned to whence he came. It took several days and much scrubbing with lashings of aromatic bath salts to return the bath to an acceptable state once more. I never did get to eat him! That, folks, is why I rarely go fishing. I’ve shown my children how to fish, and I will willingly stop for a few minutes to chat to any man with a rod, but do it myself again? No. Give me a book, a blanket to lay on, and I will be perfectly happy. Good fishing! John Nash

Weald Sixth Formers celebrate their last day in style

O

n Friday 19th May, The Weald said goodbye to their year 13 students. Students celebrated their time at The Weald by enjoying a fun afternoon on the field. They started off their day with an emotional leaving assembly where they had the chance to reminisce about their experiences and fond memories of the school and sixth form. The students and staff dressed up in imaginative fancy dress costumes to celebrate including 80s disco outfits, Mexicans, Greek gods and nuns. The afternoon included an inflatable assault course, a gladiator ring and ice creams. The weather didn’t dampen their spirits; students were extremely enthusiastic throughout the afternoon and got stuck in. Both staff and students felt emotional but happy by the end of the day.

Mr Backshall, Head of Sixth Form said, “We had a fantastic day with our leaving year 13 students and it was a day full of memories and laughter. The annual tradition of students (and staff) dressing up was upheld with some absolutely brilliant costumes. Despite the unreliable weather, we had great fun on the inflatables. We now wish all our year 13 students the very best in their exams.” We wish all students the best of luck in all they decide to do in the future. Exciting Exotics – Reptiles

E

diurnal, or day-time active lizards and tortoises. Of course, natural sunlight is the best source of fullspectrum lighting. Full-spectrum lighting also helps the reptile absorb vitamin D. The right diet. Again, this will depend on the species you have chosen to keep. What can put some off keeping reptiles is what they eat! Many reptiles are insectivores and will readily eat locusts, crickets, mealworms and wax worms. These can be bought from specialist pet stores or online; you will also need a fauna box in which to keep the live food. By feeding the insects correctly you will be giving your reptile a much more nutritious diet too. I would also advise using some vitamin dusting powder to make sure your pet is getting the correct balanced quota of daily vitamins and minerals. Some reptiles such as snakes will need to be fed on baby mice; these are again available in frozen form from pet stores. Again do your research as not all reptiles will eat daily. Handling. Reptiles should be handled daily so you can give them a good all-over health inspection. Many such as Bearded Dragons and Geckos can actually become quite tame and I have seen many a Beardy sitting happily on its owners shoulder! Take care to be very gentle at first and never hold a reptile by its tail. Once they are used to you, handling becomes very easy. Do be aware that reptiles can carry salmonella so always wash your hands after handling, feeding or cleaning out your reptile. Shedding. All reptiles shed their skin and although it can look alarming it is a totally normal process. Shedding happens more often in young growing animals. You may notice your reptile becoming dull in colour before a shed and it may rub itself on the decor in its vivarium. You can help the shedding process by giving the reptile a bathe in some warm shallow water or using a water spray. Shedding can last up to three weeks depending on species. Reptiles are really interesting and amazing creatures and can make ideal pets for those with busier lifestyles. Jeannette Douglas, SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.com

S

B

xotic pets have become very popular in recent times especially reptiles. This article aims to provide some basic information to the first-time reptile keeper and is not specific to any one type or species of reptile. Is a reptile right for you? Keeping a reptile is not a decision to be taken lightly and you should undertake lots of research of your chosen species before purchasing one. That said, reptiles can and do make excellent pets; they are much less demanding than a cat or a dog and often lower maintenance than small furries such as rabbits. They can also be suitable pets for people who have allergies to furry animals. Reptiles are much more forgiving if you work long hours too. It must be remembered that some species of reptile can live for 20 years or more and they do require specialist treatment if they become unwell so it’s best to check that there is a vet who has expertise in reptiles in your area before purchase or be prepared to travel for treatment. Setting up your reptile’s home will be expensive at first; again do your research to find out what your species will need as some reptiles originate from dry desert climates whereas species from the tropics will require humid conditions. Finding a retailer with specialist knowledge is a must as they will help point you in the right direction. The basics will include a vivarium, UV lamp, heat lamp, thermometer and hygrometer, substrates and decorations that will provide comfortable resting and basking areas for your new pet. Good reptiles for beginners include Bearded Dragons, Leopard Geckos and Corn Snakes. Lighting. Reptiles need specialist lighting. There are two types of lighting and some species will require both. Again, do plenty of research before buying your pet. Incandescent lighting. A full-spectrum incandescent bulb provides heat as well as light. These can be mounted as a basking lamp. They are fine for many lizards, but for those that require natural sunlight, it is not adequate. These must have fluorescent lighting. Florescent. A full-spectrum fluorescent bulb provides a sunlight replacement for those pets that need fullspectrum lighting. Not all require this, but those that do will be at risk if they don’t get it. These include many

Take a seat!

T

his year I decided to buy an all-weather seat for my garden. Bizarrely I didn’t actually have a permanent place to sit where I could admire my hard work. There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating. First decide whether you want to sit in full sun, or dappled shade. Watch the path of the sun and make a note of which particular parts of the garden are illuminated at each time of day. Think about when you will sit in you garden. Will you want to eat breakfast out there? If so, pop a seat and little table in a spot which catches the morning sun. If, like many of us, the only chance you get to sit out is during the evening then look for an area which is bathed in golden light of late afternoon. Would you like to dine outdoors in the evening? Can you make room for a table, and would a patio heater be a good investment, so you can make the most of the setting on cooler days? If the only area you can place a bench is in baking sun then it’s good to place some sort of overhead structure. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Sawn tanalised timbers can be used to make a very simple frame over which you can train a vine or climber. Use galvanised screws and it should last 20 years, providing a delightful place to rest. Choose all-weather furniture for ease of use unless you have oodles of storage space for the winter months. Plastic is cheap but can look very

tacky. There are some wonderful synthetic wickerstyle pieces available now though, and excellent metal furniture which requires no care at all. My favourite material is wood though mostly this does require ongoing maintenance. I did discover some rather attractive polystyrene slatted furniture on an aluminium frame which looked remarkably like the real deal. If finances allow you can buy beautiful teak wood furniture which requires very little in the way of aftercare. Try before you buy! Yes, you want your furniture to look wonderful but the most important factor is comfort. Are the seats wide enough? Is there enough back support? Does it come with pads? Finally, to bring a touch of indoor comfort and style to an outdoor area I discovered outdoor rugs! Yes really. Made from long-lasting material, outdoor rugs can cope with rain or shine. They are made from robust, resistant, easy-care synthetic fibres, which absorb minimal moisture and which dry quickly afterwards. They don’t fade even when exposed to bright sunlight and are easily cleaned by vacuuming, sweeping or beating. I was a sceptic, but I think I’m a convert and bought a little one to place in front of my bench. My dog loves it! Rachel Leverton

Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative

W

e thought it was about time that the LCGI (Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative) updated everybody involved and potential members of what has been happening with our organisation over the last few months. Our Diamond Jubilee Garden in the centre of the village is looking spectacular at the moment. Our shrubs, roses and herbaceous perennials are looking fantastic. We are delighted that the Loxwood Preschool children are looking after their raised bed and using the garden to its full potential. The area we maintain around the telephone box in the village has been looking very attractive especially after we planted many primulas and pansies in early spring. Our wildflower meadow that was sown three years ago underneath our orchard at North Hall is looking amazing at the moment. The ox-eye

daisies are making a wonderful spectacle as well as many other native wild flowers that will carry on flowering until the autumn. On Sunday 21st May the Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative arranged in conjunction with the Loxwood Society to take part in a Litter Picking Morning around the village and adjoining roads. We were more than pleased with the excellent turnout from village people who take a pride in their environment. We hope to repeat this exercise during the winter months before the verges become too overgrown. Would you like to become involved in this organisation? If so, please contact Graham Moore on (01403) 751722 or email ginamoore@btopenworld.com. Graham Moore Photos: Graham Moore

Garden Tweet!

Billingshurst’s Oasis An update on Station Road Gardens

B

illingshurst Parish Council has entered Station Road Gardens into the Best Small Park Competition run by South & South East In Bloom. S&SiB Judge will be judging the garden on Monday 26th June. I would like to thank Billingshurst Parish Council for putting our community garden forward into this competition. We, the Friends of Station Road Gardens, are all volunteers have worked very hard to provide the community with a facility suitable for all ages to enjoy. It has been some eight years in the making, and I feel that we have now achieved much of what we set out to do. The number of people that now use the gardens on a daily basis has grown in line with our expectation. It gives us great pleasure seeing the community coming together and enjoying what the gardens has to offer. Our future plans are to continue to maintain and improve the gardens, the major task being the upkeep and maintenance – this will always be ongoing. To this end we are always seeking volunteers to come and help, any small amount of time that you can spare would be very much appreciated. Should you wish to get involved please

contact me for a chat on (01403) 782321. It is unfortunate that we suffer with individuals that think it is acceptable to misuse the gardens with their litter strewn all over, and those who cannot be bothered to clean up after their dogs. Although they are a small minority it does however make unnecessary work for our volunteers and helpers and of course our street cleaners .This misuse affects all who use the gardens and I ask that those people (it’s not only our youngsters) that offend in this way to behave more responsibly. We are grateful to those who do not leave litter in any form, and also greatly assist us by cleaning up after those that do. May I take this opportunity to remind you all that we are holding the gardens’ event of the year: Lark In The Park on Sunday 16th July at 2pm, it is completely free, so please come along and support not only Station Road Gardens but also the local talent that will be performing for you. Don’t forget to bring a picnic. For details please visit our Facebook page (‘Friends of Station Road Gardens’), posters around the village. (See page 5. Ed.) Keith Brown, Chairman, Station Road Gardens Photos: Grahame Pearson and Station Road Gardens’ Facebook page PLEASE use the bins provided!

High Street Planters Billingshurst will be a prettier and more colourful place this summer, thanks to the overwhelming success of a new initiative by the Parish Council. The Council offered businesses and organisations the opportunity to sponsor planters lining the High Street. Signage has been placed on either side of the newly painted planters enabling the sponsors to promote their names to a wide audience at the same time as showing their support for the community. Funds from the scheme will be used to provide more attractive planting schemes in the troughs, which help bring colour to the main thoroughfare throughout the spring and summer.

Hello & Welcome The Parish Council is delighted to welcome its newest employee Alan Swainson who has recently commenced work as a Litter Warden/Odd Job Person. Alan joins our team of staff and will work alongside fellow Litter Warden Haydn, helping to keep our local areas clean and tidy.

Community Speedwatch update Thank you to everyone who responded showing an interest in a possible Community Speedwatch scheme in Billingshurst. There was a very positive response and there is still time to register an interest. Advice has been sought from Sussex Police and we have been given a very pro-active point of contact to guide and advise us. It is hoped that an initial meeting will be set up in the coming weeks, those who have shown an interest will be advised when this is. To register your interest, please contact Paul Berry, preferably by email at paul.berry@billingshurst.gov.uk or on 07437 287241.

Operation Crackdown Anti-social driving can be reported online through Operation Crackdown www.operationcrackdown. org. Reports must be made by the person witnessing the behaviour, (mobile phone use, bad driving, no seatbelt, rude or aggressive behaviour – NOT parking).

Reporting issues to Sussex Police Please remember to always report vandalism and antisocial behaviour as the Police will target their resources to the areas where the most reports are generated.

Dog Fouling Dog fouling is the offence of being in charge of a dog and failing to remove dog mess from a public place. Sadly we have been contacted by a number of residents complaining about owners who allow their dogs to foul our local highways and parks/open spaces. Horsham District Council is the authority that deals with this issue and failure to clear up after your dog can lead to a Fixed Penalty Notice of ÂŁ80 being issued. If you are aware of a problem with dog fouling in an area or if you know of a perpetrator who does not pick up after their dog, please contact Horsham District Council on 01403 733144 providing as much information as possible, including a description of the offender and the dog as this will assist HDC with their investigation. For further information please visit www.horsham.gov.uk/ bins/reportit/dog-bins-and-dog-fouling.

Our Community Volunteers – Graham Moore

E

njoying the beautiful garden of Graham and Gina Moore, a riot of colour, on a sunny June morning, it is no surprise to learn that they are the driving force behind the Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative. The scheme was born out of a desire expressed in a 2008 Parish Council survey by the villagers to have a gardening club, and although the first attempts to form an organisation foundered, Graham explained that as it seemed a waste to let all the enthusiasm for such an enterprise disappear, he and Gina invited all those interested to a meeting. They approached the North Hall Committee who gave permission for an acre of overgrown ground to be cultivated by the club who cleared the area and planted 38 Sussex fruit trees. Today it comprises coppiced woodland and a community orchard where Loxwood residents can help themselves to free produce. The creation of the Diamond Jubilee Garden on Station Road followed in 2012, on a plot of overgrown scrubland. Wey and Arun Canal volunteers cleared the ground and then the club built and planted raised beds and added carved wooden sheep, making a peaceful oasis popular with families. The club maintains close links with a number of other Loxwood organisations (both Graham and

Gina are active volunteers with several of these as well) resulting in support from many different sources in and around the village. Some grants have been given by West Sussex County Council, other funds or supplies by residents of the village and labour and expertise is provided by the hundredstrong membership of the club which represents approximately a quarter of the households in central Loxwood. Graham himself did a garden design course when he retired and his propagating and coppicing skills (learned as a child and now a pleasant source of nostalgia for him) have contributed to the overall result. The club holds monthly work parties to maintain the gardens or litter-picking sessions in the village, but also enjoys an active social life together. The initiative clearly gives them a lot of pleasure and, as Graham admits, he finds it hard to sit still and would rather meet like-minded neighbours and make friends while doing something they both enjoy. (For an update on the Gardens, see page 41. Ed.) Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please email Pippa: pppclv@spektrum.demon.co.uk
