niquely in the area, Village Tweet is delivered to you by Royal Mail, ensuring that even the most remote dwelling receives a copy. However, when booking the delivery for the March issue the desired slot was unfortunately full despite being booked well in advance. This has never happened in all the years of publishing the magazine. I had to book a slot a week earlier than ideal which means the copy date for the March issue is around the same day you receive this issue. However, if you wish to place an ad or article in the March issue you should be OK as long as you contact me ASAP, even if it is a day or two after the nominal copy date. My apologies for any inconvenience. Grahame

Your waste collection service is changing – are you ready?

F

rom February 2018 Horsham District Council will be rolling out changes to your waste and recycling collection service. What’s changing? Your recycling will be collected one week and your household waste will be collected the same day the following week. Garden waste will continue to be collected fortnightly for those who have subscribed to this service. All households received a letter and information leaflet in January explaining the changes and giving each household their new collection dates. You can remind yourself of your new collection dates via your online personalised collections calendar: www.horsham.gov.uk/bincalendar Why are we making these changes? The government has set a mandatory national recycling target of 50% by 2020. If we fail to meet this we will incur financial penalties. Currently the Horsham District recycles 44% of its waste so we are close, but we know we can achieve more

because investigation into our waste collections have shown that on average 20% of what we currently throw away in our household waste bins can be put into our mixed recycling bin. Over three quarters of local authorities now operate this alternate weekly collection service with some of these councils seeing a resulting increase in recycling of up to 9%. Introducing these changes will also save the council money which will enable us to maintain essential public services against a backdrop of declining government income. If you have any questions about this please visit our website in the first instance which will answer most of your queries and includes a Frequently Asked Questions section. Internet / Accountancy

Safer Internet Day 6th February

S

afer Internet Day is now celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology. The day helps to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore how we create a better and safer online community. This year’s slogan is Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you. Here are some steps we can all take to stay safe online: Create complex passwords. Create strong, unique passwords for all your critical accounts. Corporate hacks are commonplace now. One database breach can reveal tens of thousands of user passwords. If you reuse your passwords, a hacker can take the leaked data from one attack and use it to login to your other accounts. The best advice is to use a password manager to help you create and store strong passwords for all of your accounts. Boost your network security. Now that your logins are safer, make sure that your connections are secure. When you are at home or at work a password-protected router will encrypt your data. When you are out and about you might be tempted to use free, public Wi-Fi. But this is often unsecured, which means it’s relatively easy for a hacker to access your device or information. If you access the internet a lot when you are away from home it’s worth investing in a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN is a piece of software that creates a secure connection over the internet, so you can safely

6

connect from anywhere. Use a firewall. This is an electronic barrier that blocks unauthorised access to your computers and devices. It is often included with comprehensive security software. A firewall ensures that all of the devices connected to your network are secured, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices like smart thermostats and webcams. This is important since many IoT devices aren’t equipped with their own security measures, giving hackers a vulnerable point of entry to your entire network. Watch what you click. Many of today’s online threats are based on phishing or social engineering, when you are tricked into revealing personal or sensitive information for fraudulent purposes. Spam emails, spurious ‘free’ offers, online quizzes, etc, all use these tactics to entice you to click on dangerous links or give up your personal information. Share selectively. Be cautious about what you share, particularly when it comes to your identity information. Information could be used to impersonate you, or guess your passwords and logins. Think mobile! Mobile devices face new risks: dangerous apps and fraudulent links sent by text message. Don’t respond to messages from strangers, and only download apps from official app stores after reading reviews first. Make sure that your security software is enabled on your mobile, just like your computers and other devices. Ian McMullan

Vanilla Panna Cotta with Raspberry Sauce A pretty dessert for Valentine’s Day

METHOD

1. To make the panna cotta, soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft. 2. Place the milk, cream, vanilla pod, scraped seeds and sugar into a heavy-bottomed pan and bring to a simmer. Remove the vanilla pod and discard. 3. Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan. Remove from the heat and stir until the gelatine has dissolved. 4. Divide the mixture between four pretty glass serving bowls and set aside to cool. Place into the fridge for at least an hour, until set. 5. To make the sauce place the sugar, water and the splash of liqueur into a pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved. 6. Remove the pan from the heat and add the raspberries. Use a hand blender to blitz the sauce until smooth. Pass it through a sieve to remove the seeds. 7. To serve, pour the sauce over the panna cotta and garnish with the blueberries and a sprig of mint. Alternative serving method. Pour the panna cotta mix into oiled moulds rather than serving dishes, and set in the fridge as before. Blitz half the raspberries into the sauce and strain through the sieve, then stir in the remaining raspberries. When the panna cotta are set, dip the moulds in hot water for a few seconds and turn the panna cotta out on to a plate, spoon over the sauce and decorate with blueberries and mint.

How do you like your pancakes? Pancake Day is 13th February

T

his year Pancake Day – or Shrove Tuesday if you prefer – falls on 13th February and I will be tossing pancakes with the best of them. Usually I am a traditionalist and favour lemon and sugar topping but this year in the interests of research I canvassed my friends for their favourite sweet and savoury pancake fillings, and tried them out. Here are my top seven. Nutty chocolate spread and banana. (Photo.) This tasty filling bulks the pancakes out, and makes the batter go further. Perfect if there are lots of people at your pancake supper. Fresh mango and Greek yoghurt with a splash of Cointreau. Very sophisticated and utterly delicious. Fruits of the forest with vanilla ice cream and a splash of Amaretto liqueur. This one was a revelation. The liqueur works brilliantly with the

fruit, and the hot pancakes with cold ice cream is a sublime combination. Clearly I have classy friends! Blueberries and maple syrup. This contribution from an American friend goes well with thick or thin pancakes. She tops hers with bacon, but you can leave that out. If you like. Mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon. For a British brunch-style pancake, or maybe a savoury supper. Wilted spinach and Ricotta cheese. Sprinkle with a little fresh nutmeg for a very tasty vegetarian supper. Stewed rhubarb and crème fraîche. You can prepare your rhubarb as tart or sweet as you like. I liked mine tart. The crème fraîche works really well with it. I scraped some vanilla seeds into mine and beat them in before serving. This one is officially my new favourite way to eat pancakes. Sarah Davey

First Aid It can take just a few minutes to save someone’s life

Y

our daughter has a nosebleed. Your father chokes on a piece of meat. Your toddler swallows some floor cleaner. Immediate action is required but would you know what to do? First aid is the care given before the emergency services arrive. A blocked airway can kill someone in three to four minutes yet it can take eight to twelve minutes for an ambulance to arrive. Knowing how to open someone’s airway could mean the difference between life and death. Almost 4,000 people per year die because of accidents in their homes and statistically you are far more likely to be called upon to administer first aid to someone you know than to a stranger. The top ten injuries or accidents in the home are: •  Falls •  Strikes and collisions •  Cuts and abrasions •  Foreign bodies •  Over exertion e.g. moving heavy furniture •  Burns and scalds •  Crush injuries •  Bites and stings •  Puncture wounds e.g. stepping on a child’s toy •  Suspected poisoning

There are many myths and misconceptions about injuries. Here are the most common: Butter or cream is good for a burn. NO, immerse the injured limb in cool water. If you can move a limb it’s not broken. NO, the only sure way to tell if a limb is broken is to x-ray it. Put a bleeding wound under a tap. NO, by all means clean the wound if required but water will wash away the body’s own clotting agents so compression with a clean dressing is the best way to staunch the flow. Make someone sick if they’ve swallowed poison. NO, this can block their airway or, if the substance is corrosive, damage it further. Most first aid is common sense but learning some simple skills such as chest compressions (CPR) and the Heimlich manoeuvre will increase your confidence if an emergency arises. There are many organisations which provide short courses, most last just half a day. Your employer might provide training but if not you could enrol the whole family on a course and make an event of it. Even young children will feel empowered to learn new skills and you never know when they might come in useful! Louise Addison

Do you sleep well?

I

f you are one of the many who experience poor sleep then you will know how exhausting and debilitation it can be… Chronic insomnia can lead to constant fatigue, lack of motivation, irritability, reduced problem-solving skills, inability to cope with stress, reduced immunity and weight gain. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of health issues So why aren’t we sleeping? Maybe your stress bucket is full! We all have a wonderful storage system that enables us to cope with the day-to-day stresses that we face. We can safely load our bucket in the knowledge that when we sleep at night our REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep – the phase of sleep when dreaming occurs – empties our bucket.     Sadly, for one reason or another, REM is restricted to about 20% of our sleep patterns. So if you’re overstressed and your bucket full, then you quickly use up your REM quota, and as a result you may find yourself waking up in the middle of the night. And often you can’t get back to sleep again. Then we’re stuck. We need the sleep to empty the bucket but the volume in the bucket is causing our sleep to be disrupted.

So what can we do? Take back control of what you put in your bucket. Most of what we fill our bucket with are imaginary thoughts about things that have happened in the past that we can no longer influence or future events that have yet to happen. Don’t think about sleep – you don’t want ‘sleep’ itself to be a problem. The brain’s way of dealing with a problem isn’t always helpful. Try using distractions; reading or listening to a relaxation CD as you settle down to sleep. Introduce time to relax during the day – truly switch off. Whether it be listening to some music, doing some exercise, reading a book… try to do more of what you enjoy doing. During the day, fully expect that you will sleep, rather than thinking, “Oh no, I’ll never get to sleep tonight!” – we often underestimate our ability to positively forecast our preferred future. If you are a chronic insomniac, it’s always worth telling your GP, just so any medical conditions can be eliminated. Life is so much better after a good night’s sleep. Holly Stone

I Can’t Eat That! Food Allergies and Intolerances

W

ondering whether that dicky tummy or rash could be down to something you’ve eaten? Read on… What’s the difference between food allergy and food intolerance? A food allergy affects the immune system. Symptoms usually appear within a few minutes of eating the offending food, and can include a skin rash, upset stomach (e.g. vomiting), stomach pains and wheezing. The most severe allergic reaction is anaphylaxis, which can affect breathing and send the body into shock. Without treatment, anaphylaxis can be life-threatening, which is why it’s so important for people with a known allergy to carry an epinephrine autoinjector (EpiPen) if they’ve been prescribed one, and to teach colleagues, friends and family members how to use it. Food intolerances are more common than food allergies. Symptoms include irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, stomach upsets, eczema, migraines and even arthritis. The immune system isn’t affected and symptoms might not appear for a couple of hours, which can make it harder to work out what type of food is causing the problem. While you can be allergic or intolerant to any type of food, there are eight common culprits: peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, fish, shellfish, wheat and soy. If you have an allergy or intolerance to one type of food, you may well be allergic to other

types in the same food group. Diagnosis. You’ll need to see your GP if you suspect you have an allergy or intolerance, so that they can rule out any other causes for your symptoms. They’ll then likely refer you to a specialist for tests. Food allergies can often be diagnosed with blood or skin reaction tests. Intolerances are more difficult to diagnose. You may be asked to follow an ‘elimination and challenge’ diet, if necessary, to try to determine what foods you’re intolerant to. You’ll be asked to cut out certain types of food for a period of time, then reintroduce them gradually. Treatment. If you’re allergic or intolerant to a type of food, you’ll need to avoid it completely. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Ingredients such as milk powder and egg white are often used in products you wouldn’t expect to find them in. And restaurants aren’t always as vigilant as they should be about cross-contamination. So you might be prescribed steroids, antihistamines, or an EpiPen if you have an allergy. You may also be referred to a dietician, to make sure you’re still getting all the nutrition your body needs. The website www.allergyuk.org has a wealth of information about allergies and intolerances. If you don’t have access to the internet, try the helpline on (01322) 619898. Kate Duggan

Do you need a hearing test?

H

earing can gradually deteriorate. Here are five simple ways to tell if it’s time to check your hearing: You often ask people to repeat themselves. It sounds as though people around you are mumbling all the time and you find it hard to hear people unless they’re facing you directly. It’s more common to experience hearing loss in the high frequencies so another sign is having trouble understanding women and children who tend to have higher-pitched voices. Your family complains that the TV is too loud. If you’re turning up the volume to a point where those around you complain about how loud it is, it might be time to pay attention, especially since listening to excessively loud music can do further damage to your hearing. You hear a ringing or buzzing noise in your ears. Tinnitus occurs when you hear sounds like ringing or buzzing noise in your ears when no such sound is present. Sometimes it’s temporary, e.g. after attending a loud concert.

But ringing which doesn’t fade away, without any apparent cause is a common first sign of hearing loss. You strain to hear in noisy places. You struggle to focus on what people are saying in places with background noise, such as pubs, restaurants or shopping centres. This can make you feel very tired. You miss everyday sounds. If people complain you miss their phone calls or say they have to knock for ages before you answer the door consider it a warning sign, especially if combined with people complaining you have the TV or radio set too loud. Although it can be tough to admit your hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, it’s best to take action early on. With the right support and technology, hearing loss doesn’t need to keep you from enjoying all the fun things in life. Modern hearing aids are light and barely noticeable. L

oxwood Friendship Club held its annual Christmas Lunch in North Hall on 11th December. This was attended by 60 local residents of all ages who enjoyed a traditional Christmas lunch cooked by our team of volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people and organisations who helped to make this lunch so successful: John Murray, our village butcher, who supports us on a regular basis, the Billingshurst Lions Club, who donate wine annually for our lunch and Loxwood School for coming along with their choir who performed admirably. We have a fantastic team of volunteers who come along on a monthly basis to help out,

either in the kitchen, waiting on tables, washing up, as well as putting out tables and chairs and providing a taxi service for some of our residents. For those who are not aware, the Loxwood Lunch Club has been running for many, many years. We aim to create a monthly social get-together for all ages and groups of people in the village to enjoy an excellent home cooked two-course meal and good company. Live theatre returns to Alfold Village Hall ‘Brave Folk’, Sunday 18th March

F

ollowing the success of our previous Farnham Maltings productions at Alfold Village Hall, we are delighted to announce a new production, suitable for age 10 to adult, will be staged there on Sunday, 18th March: BRAVE FOLK. From the team that brought you The Iranian Feast comes an evening of story and song from the lands of the far, far north. Welcome to the marshlands. A place where you can tell a person by the sound of their squelch. Yorgjin Oxo is a carefree young man who has been taught the sounds of the storms and how to sing into the rain, until one day the next village disappears and everything changes. This is a Nordic tale fizzing with humour, about love and courage

and knowing when to act. Feedback from the Spring Tour 2017: “I would recommend anyone to experience this lovely, quirky, funny play.” “If you enjoyed The Iranian Feast you won’t want to miss Brave Folk. Brave Folk is at Alfold Village Hall on Sunday, 18th March at 7pm. Doors open at 6.15pm. Bar open prior to the performance. Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read February’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Knowledge of Angels – Jill Paton Walsh Jill Paton Walsh is an extraordinarily versatile writer. Many will know her for her numerous works for children, and more recently for her work continuing the legacy of Dorothy L Sayers’ Peter Wimsey novels. In addition to this, she has written a number of intriguing and thought provoking novels for adults, and Knowledge of Angels is an excellent example of these two characteristics. The story is set on a Mediterranean island in the fifteenth century, described in almost cinematic detail in the opening pages, as Paton Walsh invites us to contemplate the nature of fiction and storytelling. To this closed community come two strangers – one from the outside, a castaway found by local fishermen, and one from within, a girl seemingly raised by wolves in the forests of the island. One is as eloquent as the other is savage, but their fates become irretrievably tied together as their stories progress. At the heart of the book lie a number of questions of belief. Palinor, the castaway, professes to have no religion, which poses a challenge to the authority of the Inquisition on the island. Amara, the wolf child, seems irredeemably animal in her behaviour, but begins to grow under the care of the nuns of Sant Clara, raising the issue of nature and nurture. Both of their stories are also about love, and self-knowledge, and what is and is not possible. Yet the book is written in such a way, that these weighty questions are explored at the same time as

creating a page-turning thoroughly engrossing story, in which the reader is drawn in turn into the lives of Amara and Palinor. Disturbing, sensitive and deeply affecting, this is a book that will keep you thinking for a very long time. Stormbreaker – Anthony Horowitz The first novel in Horowitz’s phenomenally successful Alex Rider series, this is a must for fans of action, adventure and James Bond-style oneliners. Alex Rider is a seemingly ordinary 14-year-old boy. However, when his uncle is killed in a car accident, his world begins to unravel. An orphan, Alex finds that without the protection of his guardian he is in the hands of his uncle’s employers – and they are not a bank, but MI6! Horowitz keeps the reader moving quickly from action sequence to action sequence, with a liberal amount of humour and contemporary references along the way. The structure is familiar to Bond fans, and once you have suspended your disbelief at the idea of a teenage spy, it all becomes gripping and plausible. In particular, the gadgets Alex uses and the villainous Herod Sayle will appeal to teenage readers – while the intriguingly sinister character of Yassen Gregorovitch is introduced here, ready to be developed further through the rest of the series. Ideal for fans of ripping yarns and reluctant readers alike, you will find that one chapter is never enough, as Horowitz is the master of the cliff-hanger ending. A 12-year-old of my acquaintance told me recently that this book is “even better than the film” – if you know any 12-year-olds, then you will know that I need not say any more than that!

APEX AERIALS

Poetry from Plaistow Village Tweet welcomes the first in an occasional series of poems by Plaistow resident

Christopher Sullivan PROGRESS I prod the buttons on my phone Set out in numbered rows I wonder will it be this time As expectation grows The ringing tones assault my ear I pray to God I’m going to hear A human voice. Then appears The dreaded tape machine I’m rendered dumb and testy As I listen to the ‘voice’ A monotone squeezed down my phone A gift of multi-choice Press ONE for Mozart’s Magic Flute To wait on hold for hours – it’s TWO Press THREE to talk to no-one soon These blasted tape machines! My sweaty ear is feeling like A piece of old raw meat My arm is getting stiffer And my bum has gone to sleep Again the dreaded voice arrives “Good news! You’re caller twenty-five” It’s now I ponder suicide I hate these tape machines I linger as my stubble grows Drowning in frustration It’s surely not too much to ask For human conversation The minutes tick. The mist turns red My language now – best left unsaid And then the bloody line goes dead! *@!#&!%*#!&!@&*!#@!

Two workshops have been held to which stakeholders, community groups, potential developers and those who responded to the recent Vision & Objectives consultation were invited. At these events, attendees were asked to start to put flesh on the bones of the Vision & Objectives, in terms of identifying Opportunities, Threats and Considerations. Confused? Don't worry; we’ll be letting you know the outcome and the next stages soon.

fixed penalty notice of £80, however the maximum fine is £1,000. There are Enforcement Officers patrolling the District to carry out enforcement of the law. Dog waste can be disposed of in dog litter or public litter bins if they are available or you can take the waste home and dispose of it in your general refuse bin. You must be prepared each time you take your dog out to pick up the waste every time. This is the responsibility that comes with dog ownership. Take a supply of bags with you. It is an offence to leave your dog’s mess in a public place. Dog waste, although unpleasant, does not pose a serious risk to public health, however, in extreme and rare instances it can cause blindness due to a parasitic worm called toxocariasis. Dog waste is not dangerous if it is picked up correctly; use a bag or a pooper scooper so you do not touch the waste and it is perfectly safe to collect. People who are registered blind are not expected to clean up after their dog. If you are aware of a perpetrator that does not clean up after their dog please contact Horsham District Council on (01403) 733144.

Clock at the Centre We are delighted to have back in the foyer of the Billingshurst Centre, an antique drop dial clock that has been in store for over a year, pending its repair. The time-piece has been significantly overhauled and had lots of its cogs and bits ’n’ bobs either replaced or re-tooled. Many of the Centre users have already commented on how nice to see it back in place again. The clock was presented to the Parish Council by ex-councillor Jack Leaman, to commemorate the opening of the first Parish Council office in March 1970.

Money! Money! Money! The Parish Council has a modest Grants Budget to help local charities, and not-for-profit groups. So, if your good cause operates in Billingshurst or provides a service to those who live in the Parish, and needs a few pounds to help with new project, please consider applying for a grant; applications can be made at any time of the year. Please visit the Council’s website noted on this page, click on Council, scroll down to Council documents where you will find more details and an application form.

Dog Fouling – The facts The Parish Council frequently receives complaints about persistent dog fouling in the parish. Here is a reminder of the facts about dog fouling: •  It is the responsibility of the dog owner or walker to clean up after the dog if it fouls in a public area. Failure to do so may incur a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80. •  The law applies almost everywhere once you are outside your own garden. It covers parks, footpaths, open spaces, verges, alleyways, playing fields and any other public place. •  There are now many signs up in these areas however the law applies regardless of signage. Horsham District Council can issue an on-the-spot

Do you know your rights and responsibilities as a riparian land owner for watercourses, ditches, streams, rivers or culverts alongside or within your property boundary? Keeping your watercourse well maintained benefits the community as a whole. Watercourses such as ditches and culverts are designed to drain surface water away, before the water levels increase to an extent that puts property, roads, land and infrastructure at risk of flooding. The cost of maintaining a watercourse is minor compared to the costs that can arise from flood damage, not to mention the distress and inconvenience caused if your property is flooded. If a watercourse is carefully maintained, it can create an excellent habitat for wildlife. The basic principles of keeping your watercourse running clear are very simple: •  Keep growth of vegetation such as trees, weeds, reeds and grass under control. •  Keep watercourses free of debris, e.g. litter, grass cuttings, fallen branches and trees. •  Remove excess silt.

Another great idea. Or was It?

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst… Or, more accurately, in a place north of the small farm in Billingshurst… t waited. In fact It had waited for a long time in a shop. Then one spring day a man came into the shop and fell in love with It. He took It to another shop for some modifications which It felt quite strange with. However, the man was happy and so therefore so was It. It had finally found a home, a place of its own. It was going to work. It sat in its own space and felt good. It waited. After a few days the man came out and talked to It. “We’re going up to the shops,” he said. “I hope I get on OK with you.” So off they went until they came to a hill. At that point It could not go on. One of the modifications did not work. The man took It back to the shop and the modification was, er, modified. It went home and waited. After the modifications had failed a few more times, the man was disappointed. He no longer trusted It and would not go out with It. So It sat in its own place and waited and waited and waited. After a year the man’s friend said to him, “Give It to me and I will sell It for you.” The man agreed so the friend advertised It on eBay. Sadly the bidding price was not enough so It sat at the friend’s house and waited. Time went by again. Then one day after Christmas the friend got an email: “Had he sold It yet?” “No,” he emailed back. “I can afford to offer you only £X for It,” came the reply. “I’ll ask the man.” When asked, the man said, “This person seems to really want It. See if the person will come and look at It.” So it happened. The person drove a long way to come to see It. It didn’t get its hopes up. The friend brought It out of the house and the person looked at It. The person tried It out and It performed perfectly. All modifications had finally been fixed. The person looked and looked. And thought and thought. It had butterflies. Would the person take It? Finally the person said, “I’ll take It home and see if I can learn to be confident with It. I hope we can work together.” (“So do I,” whispered It to itself.) So It was bundled into the back of a car and

I

driven to its new home. It wondered how It would get on. It was tired of waiting. It wanted to work. It needed to work. But It was left all night in the back of the car and It began to worry. What It didn’t know was that It was in a very special place. A place where It would be loved and cherished and put to work. The very next morning Nanny and Grandad carefully lifted It out of the back of the car and gently sat It on the ground. Nanny even patted It and It was suddenly very hopeful about its future. Grandad inspected It. “It’s in very good condition,” he noted. “Well, It is practically brand new,” explained Nanny. “It’s different to what you’re used to,” Grandad warned her. “I know, but I shall practise and It will help me,” Nanny promised. To make sure It was in working condition, she and Grandad took It to one shop but they couldn’t check It out. So the following day they lifted It up into the car and took It to another shop. The man there, Andy, said It was in excellent condition. Satisfied, Nanny read everything she could about It and worked hard to get to know It and how It worked. True to Grandad’s words It was different to what she had been used to and harder too. But she practised and practised. “You look like the village idiot with it,” Sara told her. “Yes,” replied Nanny, “but in time you will get used to seeing It with me.” (“And maybe I’ll get used to you too,” It whispered to itself. “I’ll work hard for you and we will make a great team together”). One cold January evening at home Nanny reported to Grandad. “I’m sure getting It was a great idea. Already we are great friends and I am sure we will have many adventures. It will be as glad as me that It came to this small farm near Billingshurst.” (Only time will tell if getting It was a Great Idea!) What’s that, you say? Oh, you want to know what It is, do you? Well, I’m afraid I’ve run out of space. Maybe if I ask the Editor nicely he’ll take a photo of It and squeeze it onto another page… Yvonne Fleece Turn to page 45 for a photo of It and Nanny! Ed

Billingshurst Lions Christmas collections raise £3,200

F

or over 40 years Billingshurst Lions have been making Christmas collections in Billingshurst, and the villages of Wisborough Green, Loxwood, Slinfold, Barns Green and, more recently, in Rudgwick. Many local residents will be very familiar with our decorated trailer which we have towed around accompanied by Christmas music. Unfortunately the trailer had to be scrapped this year as it was no longer roadworthy and would have been too expensive to replace. As a consequence we had to come up with a new idea which was a decorated roof rack (see photo). Although we had to sacrifice the large tree the new arrangement has the big advantage that the vehicle can be driven down all the cul-de-sacs that we had to omit in the past because of major issues with reversing the trailer. The new set up is safer in every respect. We were provided with the seasonally decorated car, which enabled the new set up to be implemented, by Skoda Station Garage at Broadbridge Heath. We are very grateful for their support.

hten Brig oven r you r the fo Year New

Through the generosity of local residents we raised a sum of over £3,200 which will be used to support the local community. Our thanks to all of you who supported us. We are always looking for good causes to support so If anyone knows of an individual or a group who would benefit please get in touch either through the Club’s website or by visiting our bookshop in Jengers Mead any time between 9 and 5, Monday to Saturday. Our final thanks go to Austens of Billingshurst and Horsham Business Systems for their support, and to Freeman Brothers Charitable Printing who printed our leaflet at no cost to the Club. A mention also for PD Motors who helped us out with two batteries when we had a problem with the electrics in our sound system. Community

As a new year dawns A summary of KKWG events over the past 12 months

K

eep Kirdford and Wisborough ‘Green’ (KKWG) was originally set up and established to join two communities in fighting the application by Celtique Energie for exploratory drilling on land to the south of Boxal Bridge. When we ‘won’ our fight we decided to support other groups facing similar challenges. Since then our work has gone in different directions and has diversified, albeit the messages are very much the same: we all want to preserve the countryside and its wide diversity of habitats. KKWG is not adverse to change and appreciate we have to ‘move with the times’. However, changes must be right for the community. Fortunately recent issues have expanded the communication between local parishes and we find ourselves working with other groups to stop the development to industrialise the area that will have compounding effects on all of us. Crouchlands One of the most positive results during 2017 was Crouchlands, where one AD plant on a farm (permitted by CDC) grew and expanded without planning permission to provide regional service, a development which should have been considered and approved by WSCC. We would like to say a very big thank you to each and every one of you that helped stop the development of this site, and in particular to Protect Our Rural Environment (PORE), which had to resort to funding legal council to fight a Public Inquiry. Boxal Bridge While Boxal Bridge attracted one of the highest responses to a petition set up on the WSCC website not to replace the bridge, we are still disappointed that the Council stubbornly and resolutely refused to ‘call in’ the concerns of the villagers and listen to our voices. Needless to say this issue is still ongoing and while the council have said they will work with the local Parishes regarding the design of a possible new bridge, KKWG will be keeping a close eye on any developments. This completely narrowed the intention of the WSCC resolution adopted on 16th October 2015 which called for close workings with both Parishes concerning the project ‘that WSCC Highways work closely with the Kirdford and Wisborough Green Parish Councils to explore the safest and most acceptable project for the future of the bridge, taking into account the rual environment as well as architectural and historical merit’. Such close working has not happened and both Parishes have objected as they have done since 2013 and have now been joined by Plaistow and Ifold PC. The council felt that our leaflet showing the design of a ‘motorway style’ bridge was misleading. However, we would like to point out that this image was taken from proposed design plans in the Parson Brinkerhoff report commissioned by WSCC. Broadford Bridge On Saturday 23rd December a group of local volunteers met at the site gates on Adversane Road preparing to restore the UKOG site with bulbs and seeds on what should have been the end of the flow-testing. UKOG had told the County Council that it was finishing the testing on 22nd December. UKOG breached planning conditions that granted the extention, but as we have

34

seen before – what they say and what they do are two different things. The only lesson that has been gained is that the UKOG have shown how hard it is to extract oil from the faulted and fragile geology of the Wealden clay. The Weald is a very difficult place to drill. Neverthless, despite finding nothing during this time, UKOG have been granted an extension until February to do more flow testing and to look for two more sites in the central Weald. As a new year dawns – more challenges The F word hasn’t gone away and UKOG have recently advised that they plan to move onto two more sites in the Central Weald area, bearing in mind that Kirdford is the centre of their PEDL. Views from the public footpath alongside the unlawful lagoon at Crouchlands show the covering of the gas pipes continuing to rise with the pipe configuration serving the lagoon looking precariously less than conventional and safe. Parts of the country are fighting companies like INEOS, who are very determined and seriously plan to press ahead with fracking in the UK, even in National Parks. There is also the possibility that CE/UKOG/KOGL could sign over PEDL 234 to the larger and more well healed INEOS. This is another reason why KKWG feel that we should offer our support where we can, and not be complacent regarding possible new Licences that might be handed out. WSCC is considering an application by Cuadrilla for 2 more years at Balcombe to flow test. There is a meeting at County Hall, Chichester on Tuesday 9th January 2018. People need to apply for tickets to attend. Plans for the New Year Local villages are embracing Neighbourhood Plans that have taken into account the views of all local residents and these plans have been conducted in a democratic way. Over the coming years there will be many changes taking place that will effect all of the local communities. Communication between us will play a more crucial and paramount role so please pass on our newsletters and ask people to email us to sign up to the mailing list to receive them independently. We will endeavour to get the KKWG website back up and running early in the new year, especially to publish up-to-date news and events. We also understand that there will be new regulations relating to people that keep lists of members details. So it will be more important than ever to keep lines of communication between us flowing. We will know more about this soon and will keep you advised but there will be stiff fines if rules are broken. We are extremely fortunate to have in our KKWG team some truly dedicated people who we cannot thank enough. Without their determination and endurance we dread to imagine what our countryside situation would be and look like. As Prince Harry recently said, “I am one person and I do my bit”. KKWG totally agrees with him – if everybody embraces this approach and has that mentality then we will be able to influence others, and only good things can happen. KKWG is a group committed to this cause and your support means a lot to us – Thank you. Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green. www.facebook.com/nodrillingsussex. Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair, KKWG. Pets

The golden years – caring for senior pets

A

s with people, Animals slow down with age. They may want to take less exercise and start to put on weight. Some become friendlier, and want to spend more time with their owners while others become grumpier. Some become more anxious because they may not see or hear as well as they used to and are slower at getting away from danger. Changes in personality can also be a sign of pain or illness so, if in doubt, contact your vet. The ageing process. In cats and dogs the ageing process starts around middle age, which depending on the size of your pet is around seven years of age, in giant breed dogs it can start as early as five. Owners will notice that their pet may gain weight as it becomes less active, skin becomes less supple and grey hairs will start to appear. The pet may show signs of stiffness when getting up or at the start of a walk. Hearing and vision may not be as sharp as they used to be so your dog may not be being disobedient when you recall him after all. Sleep patterns can sometimes change and older pets may become restless during the night and as kidney function reduces they may become incontinent. Some dogs and cats can also show signs of dementia too but it’s not all as bad as it seems as there are many treatment options your vet can advise to make your pet’s senior years as comfortable and happy as possible so don’t let age be a reason for ill health. Many senior pets still lead very active and healthy lives with a few simple changes and support. Many vets now provide senior care programmes so owners can pick up changes quickly. Don’t forget to keep up your pet’s regular flea and worming programme either. Feeding the senior pet. Some pets slow down with old age and can run the risk of obesity. As soon as you notice your pet start to put on weight it’s time to change to a senior diet; these are formulated with lower fat and calorie controlled to allow for less activity. Keep and eye on how many treats you are feeding too! Some pets may lose weight and cats especially can become reluctant to eat as their sense of smell and taste may wane with the ageing process. Always get any weight loss checked by your vet as it can mean there is an underlying health problem; if all is well feed high

quality food with a good aroma, fish products tend to be very palatable and have an attractive smell – well, to pets anyway! Mobility. Joints can become stiff and arthritis is very common in older pets. All is not lost and pets can be given medication to control any discomfort. Many owners will however be thinking about using a joint supplement to help with joint mobility before the problem gets serious. Look for high quality products containing Glucosamine, Chondriotin and Green Lipped Mussel. Fish oils are also very good for joint nourishment with salmon oil being one of the best due to the high omega 3 and 6 content. Read labels carefully as some cheaper products can be blended with vegetable oils rather than being the pure product. Make sure your senior pet is not overdoing things; consider taking slower easier walks with an old dog and make exercise a little and often event. Bad breath. Many senior pets suffer from bad breath as a result of dental disease. Your vet will probably suggest a descale and polish after taking into account any other health concerns in the pet. The thought of an anaesthetic can be very worrying for owners but modern anaesthetic techniques are generally considered safe, although there is always a degree of risk for any animal – or human. A large number of anaesthetics are given to older animals, because many older animals have problems that need surgery. The vet may want to do blood tests to check your dog’s general health first. Also, having infected teeth and gums is uncomfortable and can be a risk too. They can be a source of infection that will damage other organs of the body. Many owners find that animals with bad teeth are happier and eat better after dentistry, so it is probably wise to go ahead. Enjoy the company of your senior pet as they have so much still to give with plenty of love and companionship ahead for both owner and pet. Jeannette Douglas, SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.com

Westbourne House School

S

Get stuck in!

et in 100 acres of gorgeous parkland, Westbourne House School, Chichester, is opening its doors on Saturday 17th March as part of its programme of Family Fun Days. Previous events have been based around the school’s lake and woodland but this event acknowledges the unpredictability of spring weather and offers local children the chance to take part in creative activities laid on in buildings across the grounds. Children aged from two to 10 years old are invited to register at www.westbournehouse.org/create for one of the many activities and workshops taking place in the music school, art block, theatre complex, woodworking studio, food technology kitchen, dance studio and pottery. In addition to pre-booked activities, there will be lots of other things for children and families to do, including watching performances by Westbourne House pupils and enjoying a treasure hunt, face painting, story time and crafts. All activities will be orchestrated by teachers at the school and the morning will conclude with a picnic lunch, served in the playground of the Westbourne House Pre-Prep.

The Pre-Prep Head, Victoria Homewood, is looking forward to the prospect of welcoming children for a morning of creativity: “We’ve really enjoyed meeting new people at the events we’ve done in the past and this next one is going to be even more exciting. There are lots of things to choose from, so I really hope every child will find something that inspires them, whether they’ve tried it before or not.” Westbourne House School is well-placed to offer its facilities and teachers for a morning of creativity, as it has an enviable reputation in the arts, putting on spell-binding productions, staging art exhibitions and holding numerous musical performances. If you think your child would enjoy a morning singing, dancing, painting, printing, acting or cooking, see what’s on offer at www.westbournehouse.org/create. Westbourne House, just outside Chichester, teaches children from age two-and-a-half to 13. At the end of their time at Westbourne, pupils go onto some of the leading senior schools in the country, with many having boarded at the school in preparation.

The Weald’s Christmas Community Party

T

he Weald School, in conjunction with the Lions and Rotary Clubs, hosted another successful community Christmas party with over 45 seniors in attendance making dozens of local people smile . Guests who were welcomed to the event organised by the community captain student leadership team, were greeted by Year 8 students and were presented Christmas cards, mince pies and homemade cookies made by students in food technology and a keepsake Christmas bauble. Pupils acted as waiters and waitresses and served light refreshments to their guests. While the guests ate, members of the school’s choir sang carols, played the piano, and they watched the brass band perform. The guests were challenged to a tough quiz, seniors were assisted by Year 10 and 12 health and social care students who made sure that all guests were made to feel welcome and included. Jenny Bennett, one of the guests invited said she

“had a wonderful time" and commented on the students’ excellent behaviour. Mr Fry said, “All our guests and students had a great afternoon and it is always a great event to see our students making a positive difference within their community. The students thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people of different ages and many want to help again next year.” Izzy Lewis, Events & Communications Manager

Garden Tweet!

Greenhouse joy

I

am an impatient gardener. By February I am always eager to get started and my greenhouse means that I can do just that. A greenhouse means that I don’t fear the weather, I can potter in my garden all year round and I can grow a range of plants that would not survive without protection. Most gardens have room for at least a tiny greenhouse and it’s well worth trying to incorporate one into your space. Before choosing a greenhouse, check whether your local planning authority places any restrictions in terms of size or position. Usually there are no problems. Ideally a greenhouse should be placed in a bright spot because poor light and heavy shade will mean sickly, spindly plants. Buy as big a greenhouse as you can accommodate because I guarantee that no matter how big it seems at first you will fill it. You can make a greenhouse from poles and polythene but it won’t last more than a couple of years and won’t be pretty to look at. Fully glazed aluminium greenhouses are good value, and if you like wood then go for western red cedar, which ages well and lasts a long time. It’s important to have level foundations. You don’t have to heat a greenhouse but I like

to because it lets me get an early start in spring, and keeps my tender pot plants alive through the winter. When I had an unheated greenhouse my frost-tender plants rarely survived. I prefer electric heating, which doesn’t smell and doesn’t produce the excessive amounts of water vapour associated with paraffin. Make sure you use a qualified electrician and that all the sockets are rated for outdoor use. Fit a thermostat and the heat will only come on when necessary, making it very economical. At the other end of the year make sure you have ventilation, or your plants will cook. If you can afford it go for the automatic arms which open ventilators if the greenhouse reaches a certain temperature. Also consider blinds to help prevent sun-scorch. I arrange my greenhouse with staging on one side and a soil bed on the other for my tomatoes to grow in, and I’ve attached some guttering and a downpipe to a water butt so I can collect rainwater. It’s my little haven in February, where I plant seeds and imagine what my garden will look like in a three months’ time. Rachel Leverton

Garden Tweet! West Chiltington Floral Club (Affiliated to NAFAS)

Our Christmas Show, held on 7th December was a resounding success. Nick Grounds not only produced some wonderful arrangements but kept us entertained with his stories and anecdotes (see photo). As usual, we had a raffle for all the arrangements as well as our special Gift Raffle. Please note that the date for this year’s Christmas Show will be Thursday, 6th December. Tuesday, 20th February 1.30pm for 2pm start (West Chiltington Village Hall RH20 2PZ) is the date of our first demonstration meeting of 2018 and, as usual, February is an afternoon meeting (our evening meetings will start again in March). We will be welcoming back our very own Gaenor Circus who will be taking us ‘Through the Ages’ with her arrangements. Visitors are always assured of a very warm welcome (£5 on the door), so do come along and join us. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact Patricia on (01798) 813027 or Carol on (01798) 813608. Carol Nash

Garden Tweet! / Pest control

For you gardeners… a request John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

T

his month I would like to ask for the gardeners among you for your help. As a fruit grower I am often asked why it’s almost impossible to buy English apples in the shops. What this usually means is, “Why can’t we get those glorious varieties that we used to have anymore?” There are several new apple varieties available which are all grown here in our own orchards but many of the old favourites are fast disappearing. A whole plethora of new varieties including Jazz, Pink Lady, Kanzi, Cameo, Rubens are there on the shelves, and they are lovely fruits. However, to my taste they all are guilty of one thing. They all store well in the bowl and are wonderfully crisp, juicy and sweet, but in general they all taste so very similar. There’s not the pineapple flavour of a ripe Crispin, no nutty crunch of the Egremont, the vinous sweetness of a Spartan, the acid bite of an early James Grieve (pictured) or even the lingering strawberry taste of a ripe Worcester, let alone the rare tang of a D’arcy Spice. What worries me more, perhaps, is the fact that they are nearly all licensed varieties. This means that for many years only licensed growers can get the trees to produce this fruit. So even if you find these varieties a delight, you can’t get a tree of one of them to grow in your own garden. So folk give up and don’t plant fruit trees at all; and if we give up growing them ourselves how will our children ever learn what the taste of so many of our heritage fruits taste like? My fear is that future

generations may well have no idea of the wonderful flavours that past ages had. To some extent it has happened already. Ask most children what they think of a Cox’s Orange Pippin and they will pull a face. The sharpness of those aromatics that the variety was renowned for is too much for the sweeter tooth of younger tastes. Sweetness and relative uniform blandness seems to hold sway and undoubtedly we buy so much with our eyes rather than our tastebuds nowadays. That’s not to mention the fact that many of these new fruits have little resistance to cultural problems. Any of you who have tried to grow Braeburn or Gala will be only too aware of their willing attraction to the ravages of scab, and as such need the constant attention of the sprayer. There still are small orchards around the country who are trying to keep the flag flying on heritage fruits, but they need your support at farmers’ markets and gate sales. Until we ceased as fruit growers we grew over forty varieties here on the farm and only five of those were accepted as marketable varieties. The rest we sold at the gate or at shows, etc. The supermarket, understandably, cannot give shelf space to a multitude of small quantities, they need a constant and assured supply of a product. Small batches of fruit from here and there will never stand a chance in the world of modern marketing. So, please, gardeners out there, if you have some small space in your gardens, plant one or two of those old varieties in your own patch so that they are there for the future generations to taste. The old adage, ‘Use it or lose it’ is very apt… even in the world of apples. John Nash

International Cadet Exchange Programme Sussex Army Cadets visit Singapore, November 2017

I

, along with another adult instructor, was lucky enough to be chosen to lead a group of ten cadets from Sussex Army Cadet Force to take part in the International Cadet Exchange Programme in Singapore between the 16th and 25th of November. This programme is organised by the Singapore National Cadet Corps to foster relations between cadet forces of different nationalities. This year the cadets involved were ten cadets from the USA, ten from Australia, four from Brunei and twenty from India. With one American, three Australian, two Brunei and three Indian instructors. This interesting mix gave us all a chance to work together and learn about each other’s countries. As this was a visit to the NCC we stayed on their campus which is part of a regular Singapore Army camp. At night the camp was alive with the sound of crickets and lizards and added to this I had squirrels living in the loft space above my room. It sounded at times as though they were playing football with a nut as it kept being rolled backwards and forwards across the ceiling. The camp was pleasant though with coconutladen palms, mangos, breadfruit and many other trees and shrubs. Minah birds were constant companions, always looking for scraps in the open dining hall. The Singapore National Cadet Corps, Instructors and cadets, provided an action-packed ten days with cadets from all countries working in mixed groups at a variety of sport and team building activities. These included abseiling, archery and sporting challenges. I think the best activity was dragon boat racing and kayaking in Kalang harbour. While we were at the harbour we had a visit by a family of smooth coated otters; they came in quite close to us and at one point popped up between the boats. It is one thing to see otters in captivity but something else to see them in the wild. The kayaking in the afternoon was cut short by a huge tropical storm which was impressive with thunder, lightning and extremely heavy rain. The groups visited the Singapore Air Force museum which proved to be very interesting, giving an insight into the history and present state of the SAF. A visit to the Republic of Singapore Navy was one of the highlights of the trip with a lecture about the RSN today and its role in South East Asia. This included a talk on the history of the navy since 1967 when it took over two rather old wooden boats showing a vast contrast with what they have today. This was followed by a visit to the RSN museum and finally a chance to go on board one of their modern warships. Visits to Arab Street, China Town and Little India gave us an opportunity to do some shopping and immerse ourselves in the local culture. Haw Par Villa, set up by the man who made Tiger Balm, was an unusual visit,

this was at one time a very popular attraction for the population of Singapore, part of it set up to portray the Chinese moral values. It was here there was a pond with a number of quite large terrapins. Singapore Zoo was also an interesting visit, who would expect to see a polar bear just eighty miles north of the equator? One small part of the zoo is being used to show various crops that are important to that region of Asia. Some of the UK cadets and the Australian cadets had a visit to the Botanical Gardens on the last day after the other countries had left. I had a chance to look at the amazing National Orchid Garden, well worth a visit but sadly I did not have long enough to see it properly. The cadets from Sussex held a wreath laying ceremony at Kranji War Memorial to commemorate Lance Sergeant William Warman and a party of 600 gunners from the Royal Artillery who were captured at Singapore, and taken to Papua New Guinea to build an airstrip and subsequently shot when they were no longer needed. The Australians joined us at the memorial as they also lost a lot of soldiers in the fight for Singapore which led to surrender to the Japanese in 1942. The participants of the trip formed up watching our small ceremony. William Warman lived at Mannings Heath at one time and I knew one of his brothers hence my reason for doing this. As part of the programme cadets from the USA and India visited their relevant embassies and the cadets from the UK visited the British High Commission. Here we had a talk from the defence adviser. To sum up I found this, my first visit outside Europe, to be a fantastic experience. I think the highlight of the trip was not so much what we did but doing these things with an amazing group of people of mixed race and religions. To give the cadets a chance to do this type of trip is also a valuable lesson in life, working together in teams with these different cadets. It has certainly made me think about going back to Singapore to see what I didn’t see this time round and to meet up with some of the friends I have made there. Possibly with a trip to Brunei at the same time. I have had the free sample and it worked. To find out more anout the Army Cadet Force visit armycadets.com/county/sussex-acf . The nearest detachments are at Horsham and Midhurst. In addition we are always looking for instructors. You too might get these opportunities! Our Community Volunteers – Terri Ashpool

W

hen her full-time administrative job at a local cleaning products firm is finished for the day, Terri Ashpool starts on her volunteer role as the Chair of the local Macmillan group, a nucleus of seventeen “incredible” people who work “relentlessly” to bake cakes, serve teas, make items for sale and represent Macmillan at a wide range of local events in order to raise vital funds for the local branch of the charity in Midhurst which provides support for cancer sufferers in Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. Terri first became involved with the charity when she helped out at an event run at The Six Bells where her daughter worked, and was persuaded to join the group. Shortly afterwards, Terri’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and both she and her mother received support from the charity. “After that, it became a passion,” she admits, and she put all her energies into working to raise money and awareness of the charity’s work, speaking at meetings about their work and telling her own story. Two years ago, she became the Chair of the local group whose work includes film nights in Billingshurst and Pulborough, running the Pulborough Farmers’

Market in partnership with another enterprise and splitting the profits, and an annual barn dance. They also join in with national Macmillan initiatives such as the World’s Largest Quiz Night and Coffee Morning, as well as having a presence (often serving tea and cakes) at as many local fairs and events as possible, particularly if funds are being donated to the charity, and even cater for wakes to raise further funds. Beyond this, Terri has skydived in memory of her mother, contributing the sponsorship given to the local branch. Last year alone, the local group raised £64,000 all of which went to help local cancer sufferers and their families. Terri’s passion for the work of Macmillan is evident in all that she does for them. When I ask her why she gives so much of her time to her volunteering, she says she loves meeting all the people involved, seeing their response to the charity, hearing their stories and sharing hers, as well as working with the local group itself. “It’s a group. We’re nothing without each other.” Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please email Pippa: pppclv@spektrum.demon.co.uk
