anover and the Upper Valley straddle the New Hampshire-Vermont border in the Upper Connecticut River Valley about 135 miles northwest of Boston. The intersection of Interstates 91 and 89 just south of Hanover has made the area an important crossroads of northern New England. With the interstates so close by, if you rise early you can explore the coast of Maine, catch a Red Sox matinee at Fenway Park or shop in Montreal — and still be home in time for dinner.

For those who prefer the romance of the rails, Amtrak’s Vermonter offers daily service from nearby White River Junction,VT to Montreal for northbound travelers, or New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC for those southbound. Prefer not to get behind the wheel? Several car- and shuttle-services and two bus lines offer the chance to catch up on reading, take a nap or watch a movie on a trip to Boston, Manchester or New York. Thanks to a unique partnership among Hanover, Lebanon, Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center,Advance Transit offers free shuttle bus transportation from the shopping plazas of West Lebanon to Hanover and the College, from Canaan to Hartford Village, and between Hanover and Norwich. Another green alternative at Dartmouth College is Zipcars for Universities, an initiative that offers rental cars on demand by the hour or day.

he signing of the Declaration of Independence was still 15 years away when, on July 4, 1761, colonists from Connecticut were granted a charter to roughly seven square miles of heavily wooded land in the Connecticut River Valley of New Hampshire. The first permanent settlement was formed in 1765 east of today’s Hanover, where the rushing waters of Mink Brook powered saw mills and grist mills vital to the future of this rural outpost.

Dartmouth College was chartered in December 1769.When the college formally opened in 1770, an estimated 20 families were living in Hanover. In 1778, Hanover and several other Grafton County towns seceded from New Hampshire and were admitted to the state of Vermont. They rejoined New Hampshire in 1784. By the time of the first census in 1790, 1,380 people called Hanover their home.
The village that sprung up around Dartmouth grew and eventually replaced today’s Hanover Center as the business hub of the town. Now, Hanover is an eclectic mix of downtown businesses and restaurants centered around a traditional Main Street and the more rural villages of Etna and Hanover Center.A population that nearly doubled from 6,259 in 1950 to 11,260 in 2010 is almost evenly split between full-time residents and Dartmouth students.Across the river, Norwich has a population of 3,414, according to the 2010 census. Townspeople and students alike enjoy a vibrant and safe community that combines the cultural and business advantages of a city with the charms of small-town life — all in an area of unparalleled natural beauty.

anover is a patchwork quilt of older neighborhoods on tree-lined streets and newer homes in charming developments that offer a comfortable feel for people from anywhere in the country. Like neighboring Norwich and Lyme, it offers contemporary homes with acres of land and 200year-old farmhouses with barns, ponds and scenic views. The median home price in Hanover has held steady at about $478,000, with apartment rentals from $800 to more than $1,600 per month. Prices across the river in Norwich are comparable. Bolstered by Dartmouth College and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and companies such as Hypertherm and King Arthur Flour, the area boasts a stable
economy that traditionally has allowed real estate in the area to weather business downturns felt elsewhere in New England and the nation. The Hanover Area has seen a growth of green “clustered housing” options in recent years. The town voted overwhelmingly to donate land for, and work with the developers of “Gile Hill,” an environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient neighborhood offering affordable housing near the hospital and downtown. Several other affordable housing communities are being built in the area as well. The addition in recent years of several senior housing options in Hanover and surrounding towns has accelerated the area’s growth as a retirement destination.

Despite its modest population, Hanover, like Norwich, features a full-time police force. Hanover also offers 24-hour fire and EMT coverage. These environmentally progressive towns provide curbside recycling and filtered water to those on the town system. Cell phone coverage has improved and high-speed Internet is available in most of downtown and much of the local area.

In addition to a myriad of offerings at Dartmouth College, the area offers a wealth of entertainment options, including shows at the Lebanon Opera House and performances by Opera North and the Northern Stage theatrical company, which has staged more than 100 productions since taking up residency in White River Junction in 1997.

Have a drink and listen to soft acoustic music at a local club or take a 10-minute drive to a nightclub in White River Junction. To give you a small picture of what you might find … if you’re planning a visit in July, consider the Old Fashioned Fourth of July on the Dartmouth Green or a Sidewalk Sale in town.

In December, be sure to catch Celebrate the Season, an annual family night in town, the Christmas Revels, or the Christmas Mystery at Rollins Chapel. The area is rich with galleries, museums, and local venues for visual and performing arts, including Dartmouth College’s new Black Family Visual Arts Center and Hood Museum of Art, and the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. Nearby Lebanon features the AVA (Alliance for the Visual Arts) Gallery and Art Center, which exhibits the works of more than 150 area artists. If Hanover’s Nugget Theater or the Loew Auditorium at the Hopkins Center for Performing Arts isn’t showing a movie to your taste, a short drive will bring you to other options. If sports are your thing, catch the action on the Dartmouth campus where opponents like Harvard, Princeton, and Yale are regular visitors, and Boston College, Notre Dame, and Stanford occasionally dot the schedule.

ith the gently flowing Connecticut River on the western edge of town, hiking trails running to the 2,300foot peak of Moose Mountain to the east and Hanover Country Club, Occom Pond and Storrs Pond between, Hanover has everything for an active and healthy lifestyle. The Appalachian Trail passes through Norwich and crosses the Connecticut River to meander straight through downtown Hanover before ducking back into the woods. It’s not unusual for a family out for a short walk to find themselves chatting with “thru-hikers” traveling the 2,000+ miles from Georgia to Maine on foot.

The newly-renovated, par-71 public course at the Hanover Country Club measures almost 6,500 yards. Tennis and swimming enthusiasts are right at home at Storrs Pond, which features a pond and a pool, wooded walking trails, picnicking areas and secluded camping sites. Norwich’s Huntley Meadows offers tennis courts and fields for playing games. Horseback riders of all ages enjoy Dartmouth’s Morton Farm, where college students and community members ride and board horses.Additional area golf courses, campgrounds, swimming and fishing holes are easy to find and accessible to all.
For water sports, the Ledyard Canoe Club rents canoes and kayaks and offers instruction at reasonable rates.You can even reserve the Titcomb Cabin on Gilman Island for an overnight adventure and easy paddle from town, or you can fly fish for native trout at Mink Brook or fish for bass on Goose Pond. Come winter, the Dartmouth Cross-Country Ski Center offers rentals and memberships for access to more than 25 kilometers of groomed crosscountry ski trails at Hanover Country Club and adjacent Storrs Pond, where the Oak Hill Ski Area hosted the NCAA Championships. Downhill skiers flock to the Dartmouth Skiway, a family area with a new lodge but an old-time feel featuring skiing and snowboarding. Many of the top ski areas in New England are within an easy drive. The whole family will enjoy sledding at Hanover Country Club or skating on Occom Pond, Campion Rink, Thompson Arena, and on the Lyme and Norwich town greens. Stroll through Hanover’s true American downtown, and you’ll find historic retailers like the Dartmouth Bookstore, which features everything from the latest novel by the town’s own Jodi Picoult to physics texts and gifts, to the Dartmouth Co-op, where every manner of Dartmouth gift is available. Downtown merchants offer everything from clothing to crafts, stationery to sporting goods, bagels to bytes, jewelry to jawbreakers, copy paper to newspapers, home furnishings to hardware— Hanover has it all. The Hanover Consumer Co-op has two full grocery stores, and one convenient “community market.” Each features local farm products and brands, in addition to the big brands you know. Kitchen wares, laundry services, musical instruments and recordings, opticians, orthodontists and pharmacies are some of what is within walking distance of Main Street. t its core, Hanover is a community of teachers and learners. Known as the home of the Ivy League’s Dartmouth College, the town also features one of the most highly-regarded public school systems in New England. The Dresden School District is comprised of four schools in Hanover, NH and Norwich,VT; formed in 1963, it was the first interstate school district in the nation.

With approximately 750 students, Hanover High School features a faculty that would be the envy of many small colleges. The school regularly sends over 96 percent of its students to colleges, including many of the finest schools in the country. Hanover’s wide-ranging athletics programs consistently win state championships in a variety of sports, as well as music, science, and quiz bowl competitions. The Richmond Middle School and Ray Elementary School in Hanover, the Marion Cross School in Norwich, and the Lyme School in Lyme, NH prepare students for the challenging curriculum at the high school. Top students at Hanover High take courses at Dartmouth, which features 4,300 undergraduates and 1,900 graduate students.All told, Dartmouth offers 17 graduate programs in the arts and sciences and three graduate professional schools – the Geisel School of Medicine, Thayer School of Engineering, and the Amos Tuck School of Business.Virtually anywhere on and close to campus, visitors can access the weather, travel
information or email through Dartmouth Public, the College’s free Wi-Fi portal. Several private independent day school alternatives offer rich academic curriculum balanced with small class size and a broad interest in character development. These include Crossroads Academy (K-grade 8) in Lyme, NH; the Montessori Children’s School (preschool & K) in Etna, NH; and the Upper Valley Waldorf School (nursery-grade 8) in Quechee,VT. From a host of preschools to Granite State College to the groundbreaking Rassias Foundation for learning languages or the Institute for Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth (ILEAD), the Hanover Area is abundant with learning opportunities. Following a major expansion, Hanover’s Howe Library features 79,000 volumes, three meeting rooms for nonprofit groups, banks of Internetready computers and, like the Norwich Library, open Wi-Fi access. The satellite Etna Library, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, features 6,000 volumes, as well as story time, a summer reading program and other special programs for children. The libraries of Dartmouth College are also open to the public. The Montshire Museum is an award-winning, hands-on science museum whose 110-acre facility opened in Norwich,VT in 1989. Downtown Hanover has seen carefully considered changes over the years as it continues to balance new growth and design with maintaining handsome older buildings. Hanover Park on Lebanon Street combines dining and retail stores within an elegant brick facade. Ledyard Financial Advisors built an eye-catching office building just off Main Street on Maple Street, and Dartmouth College’s new Black Family Visual Arts Center opened in 2012. Much new construction in recent years has been the result of a coordinated effort by the town and the college to add retail, office and residential space that complements the unique character of the town.

Healthcare artmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) is a 381-bed tertiary care hospital, New Hampshire’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, and multispecialty group practice located on the Hanover-Lebanon town line. DHMC is part of New Hampshire’s only academic health system, with nearly 1,000 primary and specialty care physicians located throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. DHMC’s academic partner is the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, one of the leading medical schools in the country. DartmouthHitchcock is also one of the largest employers in the state with more than 8,000 employees. DHMC has been ranked by US News & World Report as among the nation’s top 50 hospitals for Gynecology for the ninth time since 1995; its Bariatric Surgery Program has earned a Level 1 accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program; and in 2003 DHMC was the first New Hampshire facility to be recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a “Magnet Hospital” for nursing excellence, an honor that was redesignated in 2009. Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon is a 25-bed community hospital that employs more than 60 physicians who emphasize a familycentered approach in 30+ specialties and clinical areas. In addition, it features an assisted living community called Harvest Hill and an independent living retirement community called The Woodlands. The area features a number of individual and group family practices, including the Good Neighbor Clinic in White River Junction, which assures quality medical care for those without the means to pay, and the Red Logan Dental Clinic, which offers the same for those unable to pay for dental work.

Government
anover is governed by a Selectboard and a Town Manager. The five members of the Selectboard are elected for staggered three-year terms on Town Meeting day, the second Tuesday in May. The Selectboard, which is charged with implementing town meeting decisions, hires the Town Manager, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the town. The Town Manager oversees Hanover’s daily operations and is the administrative head of all town departments. The Town Manager is responsible for hiring and town administrative services such as finance, accounting and revenue collection.
