On the subject of villages I’ve been overwhelmed with the popularity of our Village Notice Board. I could provide pages and pages of charity notices but we are limited with space so the message here is that if you’d like us to feature your event (for free), please make sure you get the information emailed over to us as early as you can.

It’s been quite a challenge to keep our new stands in Waitrose Wymondham topped up! The magazines are certainly popular with shoppers in the town. And great to hear from so many of you with ideas for future issues. My ‘to-do’ list is growing longer by the week and quite apt that I happened to spot a very suitable ‘camera opportunity’ whilst on a recent family holiday.

Bursting at the seams once again with so much local editorial, too much to mention individually, you’ll just have to read from cover to cover so you don’t miss anything!

But the demand for new furniture increased so the family decided to move into beds. At this point, the shop was re-launched as Diss Bed Centre, which sold new stock rather than antiques.

TERRY’S CHARITY BIKE RIDE

As President of Wymondham Rotary Club and Chair of Governors of Chapel Road School in Attleborough, Wymondham architect Terry Hickman-Smith is not one to sit on his hands. However, for the first time in 50 years, he sat on a bicycle. For 4 days. Cycling 180 miles.

He was raising money for Norfolk Special Schools and took a route from Attleborough, taking in all of these schools, going via Dereham, Kings Lynn, Sheringham, Cromer, Caister on Sea, schools in Norwich and back to Attleborough. The money is still coming in and he is hoping to raise a minimum of £5,000 for the schools.

Pictured is Terry receiving a cheque from Wymondham Lions Club. Both Rotary and Lions raise money to give to those in need. They take no admin fees or wages for their charity work as all of their members are volunteers.

A TOKEN OF LOVE FOUND IN LONG STRATTON When local author, Ann Bowyer, cleared her father’s house, she discovered a battered locket containing her grandmother’s photo and a lock of hair. A Diss jewellery expert explained WWI soldiers were given these by their sweethearts and she realised her grandfather, a Canadian soldier, had taken it to Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, where he was awarded the Military Medal.

Inspired as a child by her grandmother’s tales, Ann travelled across Europe and Canada uncovering the horrors of WWI and the tough life of Prairie settlers.

Through dust storms, plagues of grasshoppers, bitter winters and tornadoes, she reveals the amazing experiences of her grandparents.

Welcome to the Diss Carnival!

The Diss Carnival takes place on Sunday 15th June with a theme of “Diss Through The Ages”. We spoke to the carnival co-ordinator, Doreen Collins, about what we can look forward to seeing at the carnival.

“W

e hope that those taking part will enjoy researching the history of our wonderful town,” she said. “Visitors can enjoy watching the colourful procession of floats and walking groups and we want as many people as possible to come along, take part and enjoy this great family event.”

The entertainment commences at about 11.30am with the Hoxon Hundred Morris dancers and friends performing in the Market Place and Mere’s Mouth. The carnival procession of floats and walking groups, led by

the Norwich Samba Band, leaves Roydon Road at 1pm and makes its way through the town centre before finishing on Shelfanger Road at around 2pm.

As usual the fun day starts at 2pm at Diss Town Football Club in Brewers Green Lane. A few very special visitors – the Falcons Parachute Display Team – will be dropping in. The RAF Falcons are widely recognised as the UK’s premier military parachute display team so prepare to be impressed! New for this year’s event will be Phoenix Rescue with their birds of prey and a fly past by a Spitfire.

Diss Carnival

The RAF FAlcons PARAchuTe DisPlAy TeAm Widely recognised as the UK’s premier military parachute display team, the Falcons, based at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, display at venues all over Britain and Europe throughout the year.

The Royal Air Force is responsible for training and supporting all UK Airborne Forces. As well as providing a distinctive demonstration of freefall and canopy skills during the display season, each Falcons Team member undertakes continual advanced training as Parachute Jumping Instructors in preparation for future employment in support of the Parachute Regiment, the Royal Marines and other specialist units.

The RAF Falcons Parachute Display is both unique and flexible. This is necessary due to weather conditions that will dictate which of the three types of show the team may be asked to perform at very late notice. But each display will always include • a variety of movements across the sky in freefall using coloured smokes to illustrate an aerial pattern • a demonstration of close proximity flying under canopy which includes the famous Falcons’ noncontact canopy stack • controlled and accurate landings into small confined areas, often near buildings or water

Diss design collective

celebrates a year of creativity

Diss Designer Makers @ 21 are celebrating their first year of creativity this summer! An eclectic group of craftspeople are breathing new life into a huge Victorian shop on St Nicholas Street which they use as their studio and gallery.

Designer Makers @ 21 was set up in May 2013 by four enthusiastic artists looking for somewhere to work and display their creations.

Now there are 11 highly skilled craftspeople working from the shop. Designer Makers @ 21 aims to continue building a collective of local makers and to encourage the growth of creative businesses in Diss. Open to the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am till 5pm, you can be assured of a warm welcome.

There is always a sense of discovery at Designer Makers @ 21 and visitors can expect to see something new each week as the crafters try new techniques. The whole spectrum of design is covered from lively upholstery to sculpture, textile printing on clothes to stained glass design. Visitors appreciate seeing crafters at work and enjoy commissioning original designs.

Textile art, influenced by the smallest detail in the landscape, makes you want to take a second, closer look.

The latest member, Kate Heath, works in silver and semi-precious stone, making individual pieces of high quality.

For those who like to be “hands on”, workshops are available in corsage millinery, mosaic design and Saori weaving. This Japanese form of textured weaving is unique in this country and one of the makers, Kim Marangan, has been to Japan to study this form of cloth making. Her studio is testament to her passion for the craft. The craft workshops are proving to be popular and to everyone’s surprise even a recent singing workshop was totally melodious!

Guest Designers Designer Makers 21 also show cases guest designers. At the moment, there are three local guest designers on show. This work will be on display for 3 months, then later in year new guest artists will be invited to bring their work to the showcase:

Over 130 Suffolk artists will be opening their studios to the public over the weekends of June 2014 as part of the long-running Suffolk Open Studios initiative.

Wymondham Music Festival Fortnight Wymondham’s Music Festival Fortnight returns from Saturday 21 June to Sunday 6 July with more than 30 events, some organised by other groups, many of them free, in venues across town.

njoy performances by national, regional and local musicians with everything from Schumann, Debussy, Beethoven and JS Bach to Americana, English folk, swing, jazz, flamenco, bluegrass, African, Balkan, gypsy and Indian music and contemporary composers and singer-songwriters.

Festival Fortnight kicks off at 10am on June 21 with Around the World Through Music and Dance, a new free family event in Wymondham Abbey and churchyard. Enjoy Moxy Garbanzo playing Eastern European tunes and Sokoshumba performing colourful African music on mbira, hosho and djembe. There’ll be Bollywood and Indian classical dancing and Strictly Flamenco, along with Adrian Palka’s Sound Table.

Other Abbey events include the vibrant Bella Tromba – jazz, classical and early English music (June 21); Joy and James Lisney (June 26), cello and piano featuring Schumann, Debussy and Beethoven; Collegium (June 28), a new Baroque ensemble performing Telemann and Bach and The Goldman Ensemble (July 2) recreating their 2008 piano recital at St Martin-in-the-Fields, which they presented without their pianist who was stuck in traffic. Enjoy an evening full of comedy, theatre and music from Bach to Joplin.

There’s also a programme of lunchtime recitals at the Abbey and a special performance by Matthew Schellhorn of Ian Wilson’s new piano masterpiece, ‘Stations’ (June 29), to celebrate the Abbey’s new icons of the Stations of the Cross.

And on July 3 at the Abbey, it’s ‘Of Night And Light And The Half Light’ with John Law piano and Iain Ballamy saxophone, exploring the ground hovering between classical and jazz using contemporary groove-based rhythms and contemplative music.

The annual Midsummer Jazz Picnic returns to Becketswell (June 23) with Simon Nelson’s Dixie Mix, fresh from supporting Rod Stewart’s UK tour and Is u Iz – Ali Huiellebecq, saxophone and Hugh Stanners, accordion.

Central Hall has a great line up beginning with Norwich newgrass string band Feral Mouth (June 24) performing their ‘raucous irresistible bluegrass with rock n roll flair’ – Louise Rodgers, Americana UK. Then the world famous Pasadena Roof Orchestra is in town on June 27, followed by singer-songwriter Edwina Hayes (July 4), ‘the sweetest voice in England’. Arhai and Musica Planina (July 5) complete the Central Hall series with a lively evening of Balkan folk music – a great Saturday night party.

And Norwich favourites The He Hews wrap up Festival Fortnight with the Family Finale at the Baptist Church (July 6), an afternoon of ‘sophisticated silliness’ from flapper to disco with a New Orleans twist.

Antiques & Vintage Street Market and Midsummer Street Party For several hundred years Harleston held an annual Fair of St John in late June, which may have had its origins in more ancient midsummer revels.

A

noisy combination of commerce and celebration, it was a time of thanksgiving for the arrival of summer, celebrated with friends, neighbours and visitors.

On Sunday 15th June this historic event is being reconfigured for the 21st century with the first Harleston Antiques & Vintage Street Market taking over the centre of town between 9.30am and 4pm.

Over 40 antiques and vintage stalls, plus street musicians and various entertainers will provide a rich offering of attractions for local people and visitors. There will also be street food stalls including wood-fired pizzas, pulled pork, the Duck Truck’s crispy duck wraps and Flying Chef’s traditional chargrilled sausages, as well as locally-made Alburgh Ice Creams. Many local shops and businesses will be opening up specially and it will be a unique way for families to celebrate Father’s Day. In the evening, once stalls have been cleared away, a Midsummer Street Party will take over the Market Place with 3 hours of free music entertainment (6 – 9pm).

With the centre of town closed to traffic, continental-style tables and chairs in the Market Place, an

outdoor music stage featuring music to suit all tastes and array of delicious street food on offer the organisers hope that this will be a night to remember for the whole community.

Pygmalion

The classic tale of the flower-girl transformed into a society lady has charmed generations of theatre-goers. Now one of the best-loved plays of the 20th Century – Pygmalion – is being revived with an all-star cast headed by Alistair McGowan, Rula Lenska and Jamie Foreman. We caught up with Alistair McGowan to find out more about his latest on-stage role.

est kn known perhaps haps as an impressionist, Alistair has also written and directed, starred in West End musicals and had a thriving career as an actor. Now he is returning to the boards in the role of Professor Henry Higgins in Pygmalion, which will be at Norwich Theatre Royal from 16th-21st June.

And perhaps his experience of being an impressionist makes him the perfect person to play Higgins.

“We both share an interest in the specifics of the smallest sounds and we are both fascinated by what accent can say about who we are,” says Alistair. “We all make judgements about people based on how they sound: you hear someone speak and within a couple of sentences, it says something about their background.”

Alistair reveals that he shares certain personality traits with Higgins. “I can get quite irritable about life and Higgins can get extremely irritable,” he says. “He’s obsessed with his subject and obsessed by his work. In a way, it’s quite therapeutic for me to get rid of my dark side through playing Higgins.”

Shaw’s ideas about the organisation of society and the way in which accent can reveal our place within the social structure are no less relevant today. How should we behave in such circumstances?

“I think the key to Higgins and to an extent the key to Shaw is something my father instilled in me,” argues Alistair. “The important thing in life is not having good manners or bad manners but having the same manners. You should treat everybody with the same consideration.”

Alistair is inclined to downplay the element of romance in Pygmalion. alion.

He contends that the author of the play, George Bernard Shaw, is dealing with more substantial issues.

“I believe that what is important tant for Shaw and for Higgins is the place which each one of us occupies on the ladder. Shaw asks what would uld happen if you take a person like Eliza from one section of societyy and introduce her into another world. Will they be happy in this new milieu?

The town centre event will have a walking procession, with a carnival queen and many local groups and companies represented. We wanted to try and capture the fun and inventiveness of a traditional carnival, but remove the vehicles from the procession. The whole event will be taking place within the Middleton Street and Market Street area.”

Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is shortlisted for Museum of the Year award

T

The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, at the University of East Anglia, Norwich is one of the six finalists for the prestigious Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014.

he Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year, awarded annually with a value of £100,000, was established in 2003 to recognise the very best of the UK’s internationally acclaimed museums. It has been supported by the Art Fund since 2008. Previous winners include the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow, London (2013); the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter (2012), and the British Museum, London (2011).

2013 was a standout year for the Sainsbury Centre coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the University of East Anglia. This saw the opening of re-designed facilities including the largest temporary exhibition space in eastern England; a new East Gallery devoted to a complete redisplay of the Permanent Collection; flexible use of additional spaces devoted to modern and contemporary art; and a new shop, café and leisure area.

These new spaces were launched in September 2013 with the

opening of the most ambitious exhibition in the Centre’s 35 year history; Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia. Celebrating the rich culture and artistic heritage of East Anglia the exhibition received national acclaim welcoming nearly 46,000 visitors, the highest attendance figure for a temporary exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre.

The accompanying exhibition publication received the accolade of EDP-Jarrold East Anglian 2013 Book of the Year Award.

Commenting on the news Paul Greenhalgh, Director of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, said: “I am delighted that the Sainsbury Centre has been shortlisted for the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year Award 2014. Our most ambitious exhibition Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia has achieved all the goals we set ourselves: it has placed the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in the public eye, not only in the region but also nationally and internationally.”

The other five museums which have been selected as finalists for the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year are: Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, East Sussex; Hayward Gallery, London; The Mary Rose Museum, Portsmouth; Tate Britain, London; and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield. The winner will be announced at a ceremony at the National Gallery in London on Wednesday 9 July 2014.

The Prize is also encouraging the public to show their support for their favourite museum by launching a photography competition and the Sainsbury Centre will be holding a photography workshop for budding photographers on June 7.

og owners can benefit from FREE microchipping for their pets at Chapelfield Vets thanks to the Dogs Trust Microchipping Through Vets campaign.

Starting on the 1st April, local dog owners can contact any of the Chapelfield Vets surgeries to have their dog chipped. Microchips offer a range of benefits, not least the potential to reunite a lost pet with its owner.

A microchip is a small electronic chip, around the size of a grain of rice, which is implanted under the dog’s skin and contains a unique number that can be read by a scanner.

The dog owner’s contact details relating to each number are logged on a central database, so should the dog ever go missing or be stolen it can be scanned by the authorities and returned to his owner swiftly and safely. It is vital that the owner takes responsibility for updating their details with the database should their circumstances change.

hat makes a garden unique? Well it could be any number of things – the shape, the style, the skill and enthusiasm of the gardener, or the time available to create and maintain it – but most of all it’s the way plants are chosen and used.

For fences and walls, try growing a ve velvety-leaved lvety-leaved Ki Kiwi wi (Actinidia deliciosa) or its relative, Actinidia tinidia ko kolomikta lomikta (Paint-brush vine). Evergreen screeners eeners may may include Hydrangea seemannii, (self-clinging, whit whitee lace lace-cap -cap flowers, great for shade), Holboellia latifolia latifolia (fast (fast-growing with small inedible sausage-likee fruits), or an Akebia quinata (the Chocolate vine – need I sa sayy mor more!) e!)

Getting the right plant in just the right place is not easy, it takes an understanding of its needs. Put a sun-lover in the shade and it may hang on, but it’s unlikely to perform well, leaving you disappointed and disillusioned, so please ask for suggestions and advice if needed.

Of course, you shouldn’t forget the flower bor borders borders, ders, choice plants might include Anthriscus ‘Ravenswing’ avenswing ave nswing’ a purple-leaved form of Cow parsley (d (dead-head ead-head to avoid seeding), the new Polemonium lemonium ‘Stair ‘Stairwa ‘Stairway way to Heaven’ with subtle tri-coloured leavess and light purple/blue flowers, Eryngium bourgatii, gatii, a cur curly-leaved ly-lea Sea holly which loves the sun and is ador adored ed by bumble bees (I counted 24 on a plant one summer!)

An elegant tree or shrub provides long-term interest and will create a focal point, many are slow growing and so are suitable for small gardens or for containergrowing. Flowering dogwoods are grown for their stunning flower-like bracts, try Cornus florida ‘Eddie’s White Wonder’ with ‘flowers’ 4” (10cm) across, or Cornus florida rubra with its beautiful pink hues. Ginkgo biloba, an ancient tree (around with the dinosaurs), has light airy foliage which turns butter-yellow in October.

Japanese maples (Acers) have delicate drooping leaves, they require shelter from the wind but give breathtaking autumn colours.

For sunny positions the evergreen Carpenteria Californica will stun you with its pure white flowers, Lophomyrtus ‘Black Pearl’ has beautifully veined glossy maroon foliage, and Nandina domestica (Heavenly bamboo) offers changing interest all year-round.

Given the right conditions, you’ll be rewarded with a plant that fulfils your expectations – making your garden that little bit more special and you’ll be amazed by just what you can grow! grow Ca ltha ‘F lore If the site is open and reliably moist grow Caltha ‘Flore Pleno’, a double-flowered Marsh marigold, igold, under the dark leaves of Rheum ‘Ace of Hearts’, or Ligular Ligularia ia ‘Br ‘BrittittMarie Crawford’.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder beholder, and the above plants are just a few of my man manyy favourites. THE KITCHEN GARDEN

The kitchen garden is really coming into its own by June and some of your herbs might be ready for picking. The best time to pick them is on a dry sunny morning (before the heat of the midday sun releases the herb’s essential oils) and make sure you use them shortly after you have picked them. If you want to dry them, tie the stalks together and hang them upside down in your airing cupboard. Once

dry, store them in an airtight container. Lettuce, radishes and other salads will be ready to harvest now too, along with some early potatoes.

Again, the morning is the best time to pick, and make sure you choose the leaves around the edge of the plant. If you want to keep up your salad supplies throughout summer, keep planting fast-growing lettuces throughout the season.

Now is a great time to hang up those summer baskets, which will now be overflowing with colourful blooms and buzzing with bees. Make sure they are within easy reach because needless to say, they will need regular watering in warm weather. June and July is the peak of summer and whether it’s a scorcher or a damp squib there is plenty to celebrate in the hedgerows, fields and meadows, says Jon Tyler.

y June grasslands are the place for the natural world’s flower show celebration. Sometimes with over 30 plant species per square metre old pastures and meadows can produce displays of blooms to rival anything at a summer flower show.

Meanwhile in the hedges, dog rose (derived from dagger-rose; a reference to the sharp thorns) and sweet briar are in full bloom and scent. The soft flower petals can be dissolved in hot sugar syrup to make rose petal jam. If you’re a fan of the Turkish delight flavour it’s worth the effort of making some and it is gorgeous on scones for summer afternoon tea.

Continuing the tea theme several summer blooms make fine flavoured drinks and infusions.

Try out the delicate elegance and sophistication of lime tree blossom tea. Lime or linden might also be known as the humming tree for on a warm day when the tree is bejewelled with sweet scented

creamy flowers, so the air is filled with the sound of bees buzzing.

Elderflowers promise a myriad of tasty summer treats; from fizzy champagne and sorbet to decadent elderflower doughnuts where the whole flower head can be dipped in batter and deep fried. Make the most of the bounty and capture that summer feeling by making elder flower cordial.

In July growing in glades and along woodland edges wild strawberries are easily over looked. This diminutive natural cousin of the garden variety makes up for it in taste what it lacks in size. Not as sweet but with far more fragrance a handful tossed in with cream whipped up with a dash of cassis (blackcurrant liquor) is a true summer treat indeed.

So with all these many wonders to be discovered, why not grab a picnic and get out into the wilds to make the most of nature’s own summer celebration.

though poppies grow in Flanders fields In the last issue local historian and professional genealogist, Sarah Doig, wrote about the men of our region who died in the First World War and who are commemorated on village war memorials. This time, Sarah has taken a closer look at one of the thousands of rank and file soldiers who lost their life in the conflict.

T

he surviving service record for Private Arthur Henry Everett, held in The National Archives, tells the tale of a young man born in Tasburgh, Norfolk. His next of kin recorded is his mother, Miranda Goose of Cats Corner, Tasburgh.

Arthur Everett, an agricultural labourer born on 7th November 1893, was enlisted into the 9th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment on 10th September 1914.

The medical form records that he had blue eyes and light brown hair, was 5ft 10¾in tall and weighed 157 pounds. Details of his service show that he served at home until 29th August 1915 when he was sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. A final, sad entry records that he was killed in action on 26th September 1915, place unknown.

This was a brass plaque just over 4½ inches in diameter bearing the inscription: “He died for freedom and honour” along with the name of each individual soldier.

The accompanying scroll reads: “He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self- sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten.”

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website (www.cwgc.org) gives details of the final resting or commemoration place of each soldier who died.

Arthur Henry Everett is commemorated at the Loos Memorial in France which lists over 20,000 officers and men who have no known grave, who fell in the area from the River Lys to the old southern boundary of the First Army, east and west of Grenay.

Attached to Arthur Everett’s service record are the various signed receipts from his mother for the three medals he was awarded posthumously; the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. This set of three medals were primarily awarded to members of the British Expeditionary Force, and the set, or at least the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, are the most likely medals to be found among family heirlooms.

Arthur Everett’s mother also acknowledged receipt of the commemorative memorial plaque and scroll which was given to the relatives of those whose deaths were attributable to the Great War. This memorial plaque is better known now as the “Death Penny”.

Discover the history of your village

with Quatrefoil books

Quatrefoil local history group was formed to research the history of the villages of Botesdale, Redgrave and The Rickinghalls in Suffolk and to make this research available to all by various means, principally by publishing books. The team wanted to stimulate new and renewed interest in the locality and its inhabitants over the centuries. The aim was to inspire people to discover more about local history and to enjoy walking in the footsteps of others.

uatrefoil was awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund under “All Our Stories Programme” presented by Michael Wood and the BBC. Helpful support was given by the University of East Anglia’s Ideas Bank initiative.

As a result of all this Quatrefoil, under the chairmanship of Sarah Doig, have now reached the end of the extended grant period and have published eight books on local history. These books include A Suffolk Boy in East Anglia, which is an inspiring story on the life of Samuel Speare, a fifteen year old boy who left Rickinghall to become a missionary in Zanzibar in 1868. In an escape from the CGI hell that is modern cinema during the summer (Transformers 4… really?!), here’s a romcom for the (late) middle-aged. Rob Reiner re-teams with American President star Michael Douglas, who this time plays a grumpy estate agent with grandchildren problems who enlists the help of neighbour Diane Keaton. I feel this may veer into Nancy Meyer’s Something’s Gotta Give territory (which had Keaton sparring with Jack Nicholson), which is cause to recommend it. Frankie Valli co-stars.

Release: 18 July Now, I couldn’t go the whole summer without some No kind of sci-fi fantasy CGI fix, I admit it. But at least this one’s not a sequel. And it’s by the Wachowskis, who made The Matrix (one of the best films ever made). They also made Cloud Atlas, which was just a mistake. It stars Channing Tatum (also soon to be seen in comedy 22 Jump Street) and Mila Kunis (the object of Natalie Portman’s paranoia in Black Swan), who may be the one to save the universe. Given the Wachowski’s storytelling and technical mastery, this is one to watch. And we can’t complain about endless sequels if we don’t give something original a try.

Jersey Boys Clint Eastwood directs this film version of the successful and award-winning stage musical, which tells the story of the Four Seasons and their star Frankie Valli. Eastwood was keen to use the Broadway cast where possible, and John Lloyd Young makes the leap to the big screen as Valli. Eastwood has always had an interest in music, and directed Bird, a biopic of jazz legend Charlie Parker in 1988. He now often scores his own films. Here he builds on his post-Unforgiven mature work, which has encompassed biopics of Nelson Mandela and J Edgar Hoover, and a great non-CGI evening out is guaranteed for all, old and young.

Somehow, whenever we went past it, we were on our way somewhere else. This time we made a special journey and I am glad we did. Access is simple; it’s on the A140 going out of Norwich towards Tesco’s. The car park is big and it’s a level playing field from the car to the door.

he place is a tardis; it seems much bigger inside than out. It has 60 tables, but they are scattered across a very large area so there is no feeling of being crammed in. There are also about 20 tables outside, but it was far too frappé for that!

We bought our drinks at the bar, my friend had a whole pint of lager, but I spotted a Yorkshire real ale called Mary Jane so had a half pint (driving) but I could have handled a whole pint too. Nice and hoppy.

We sat down and studied the menu.

Nibbles are available, and I seriously considered the tear and share cheesy garlic bread, but I wanted to have room for pudding later. I had already looked at the menu online and firmly decided to have the slowcooked shoulder of lamb, until my friend beat me to it! So I changed to the classic fish pie.

Bizarrely, we then had to return to the bar to order our meals. I didn’t mind too much, but I did hear mutters of consternation coming

from a nearby table of posh ladies who were ‘sitting comfortably’. We didn’t have to wait long for the food, but if you are an impatient diner, I would recommend booking an early table as the place filled up from om twelve thirty onwards.

My fish pie was delicious; white fish, smoked fish and prawns in a succulent creamy leek sauce. My friend’s lamb just tenderly fell apart as she tried to cut it. The servings were generous but we still managed to clear our plates.

Pudding however outfaced us both: I chose the ultimate chocolate brownie tower that was so big it was leaning over, resting on the ice cream that accompanied it. My friend chose the giant éclair which was … enormous! So much so that she had to resort to a doggy bag to take half home for her husband.

Both were totally scrumptious.

When it comes to coffee, I tend to feel that I should try something different from my usual filter or

espresso, so afte espresso af afterr a nice chat with our waitress Ami, I ordered the Americano. Delicious but too weak for me; I really must remember to stick with the stronger varieties of coffee. My friend had standard filter coffee and was entirely satisfied.

Stuffed with food and drink, I toddled off to the ladies; unfortunately the toilets are located upstairs although there is a disabled one on the ground floor. I struggled up the stairs thinking ‘I really should order smaller puddings…’

Village spirit returns to Swardeston

Thanks to a full schedule of community events, Swardeston village spirit has been brought back to life, writes the chairman of Swardeston Live, Kirstie Pope.

I

t started as a casual conversation on a dog walk one fine sunny day on Swardeston Common: “We should do something as a village for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee”.

It was decided a family fun day was the way to go, free to everyone in Swardeston. It was necessary to raise funds so we held a coffee morning and craft sale and were helped with donations from South Norfolk Council, Swardeston Parish Council & St Mary’s Church. The day included games for the children, sports day races for all ages, fancy dress and knobbly knee competition, bring and share lunch and a good old fashioned sing song to close the day.

Our plans were to attract 100 people so imagine our amazement on the day when the crowds came....and came.....and came. We estimate 250-300 attended on the day.

Following our success, we decided to form a group called “Swardeston Live” to continue providing entertainment to the villagers of Swardeston.

Our first event in 2012 celebrated 70 years since the participation of the USA in World War II. “Across the Pond” included a 1940s dance with live swing band and a movie night in the village hall. The dance was amazing, we sold 100 tickets and the village danced the night away to the sounds of Glen Miller and the like. Our youngest attendee was 16 and our oldest was 90 (something). We even had a couple who met at a dance in Swardeston Village Hall during the war.

Along followed Movie Nights at the Village Hall.

“Philomena” in March of this year brought in 102 people! The doors opened and the crowds flooded in. Goodness knows how we seated them but we did and a great night was had by all.

We now hold a coffee morning “The Jubilee Club” on the second Tuesday of every month at the Social Club where you can come along and

enjoy a gossip over coffee and homemade cake.

We are also aware of an interest in village history which encouraged us to form a group called “Old Swardeston”. We hold regular exhibitions where people can submit photographs and documents to be displayed.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of all of this is the effect on the various clubs and societies in the village, like the cricket club and the church. We now work together effectively and not only does this enhance village spirit but it is beginning to make the activities more successful. Swardeston has once again become a strong community.

at the Theatre Royal

Do you enjoy theatre? The anticipation of the performance, the hive of activity in the auditorium and then the curtains lift, and behold great drama, opera, musicals and comedy.

W

hat many of you won’t know is the magic created beyond the curtain. As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre Royal works with about 5000 children each year, including 200 who participate in our flagship education programme the Norfolk Schools Project.

The project introduces them to opera inspired by a touring production like English Touring Opera’s The Magic Flute or Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures’The Lord of The Flies. They write their own mini opera, which they then perform on the Theatre Royal stage. The biannual project takes 3 months each spring and autumn. Children, their parents and their teachers all say that they are more confident, proud, creative and work better in a team.

Laetitia Webb, development director, recalls a moment from a past project in a rural school: “One child, who I thought was being bullied, was

actually excluding herself from class activities. It was as though she didn’t think her contribution was worthwhile. During the course of the project our arts practitioners brought her into the fold and involved her in the creative process. At the end of the three months I could hardly recognise her to be the same girl; suddenly a large beaming smile appeared as she skipped across the school hall in the final rehearsal. I’ll never forget that moment.”

An eclectic mix of acts perform in seven spectacular forest locations around the country as part of the annual concert series arranged by the Forestry Commission. Smart Money Secrets Pack the right holiday plastic to avoid costly overseas card fees

W

ith the summer holiday season in full swing it’s a good time for a quick reminder of the charges you could face when using your plastic abroad.

Debit and credit cards may be a secure and convenient way to pay when you’re away from the UK on holiday, but the fees and charges vary considerably, so it’s worth getting to grips with these before you jet off.

If you use a credit card overseas most banks will add on a foreign usage fee of around 2.75% to 2.99% to all cash and purchase transactions however there are a few cards offering a better deal.

Credit cards from Halifax (Clarity), Metro Bank (Europe only), Saga and Post Office don’t charge any usage fee, thus immediately saving you up to £3.00 per £100 of purchases.

Debit cards may be free to use in the UK but that’s not the case when you use them abroad.

Debit card transactions also attract a foreign usage fee for

cash withdrawals and purchases (2.75% to 2.99%) plus an additional ATM withdrawal charge typically between £1.50 and £5.00.

But the charges that catch most people out are those levied for debit card purchases which are subject to the usage fee above, plus up to an additional £1.50 per transaction regardless of the amount.

The worst offenders are Halifax (£1.50 per purchase transaction), Lloyds Bank (£1.00), Santander (£1.25) and TSB (£1.00). If you’re looking for a fee free debit card for using overseas, then take a look at the cards from Norwich & Peterborough Building Society or Metro Bank (Europe only).

With the pound looking stronger against the Euro, your summer holiday may work out to be a little less expensive this year, so don’t go and spoil it by shelling out on unnecessary credit and debit card fees.

It’s worth spending a couple of minutes to check with your bank what the charges are for your particular plastic before you jet off, rather than getting a nasty shock

when you check your account on your return.

At least if you understand the overseas charges, you can adapt your spending pattern accordingly – for example, you don’t want to be making cash withdrawals or purchases of £10 or £20 if you’re going to be hit with fees of £1.50 plus each time.

An alternative lower cost option is to consider a prepaid currency card in Euros or US Dollars from the likes of Fair FX, Travelex or CaxtonFX. The cards are chip and PIN secure, accepted wherever you see the MasterCard symbol and offer a cheaper way to pay than many high street debit and credit cards.

These currency cards can be loaded from your bank account or your debit card and as such the exchange rate is locked in at the time the cash is transferred to the card, so you’ll know exactly what you’ll be paying for all your holiday transactions.

So as well as packing a good book, your sun tan lotion and your passports, make sure you take a card that’s not going to blow a big hole in your holiday budget!

Ne of the beNefits of being a motoring journalist is that most press cars come with a tank of fuel. this is necessary for the job you understand. the thought of actually filling up a test vehicle and paying for it with your own wallet sends most hacks recoiling in horror.

But very occasionally a car captivates you so much that you really don’t mind throwing fistfuls of cash at it when the free juice runs out. The Audi RS 7 Sportback is one such motor.

time of just 3.9 seconds and a governed 155mph top speed.

If you have Autobahn aspirations, then you can increase the maximum speed to 174mph by specifying the optional Dynamic package, and enhance it even further with the Dynamic plus package, which calls a halt to acceleration at 189mph.

Why did it seduce me? Well, the car is simply a God on four wheels.

It looks amazing; it delivers more thrills than the fastest rollercoaster you’ve ever been on; it sits four adults in total comfort and it’s made exquisitely. So let’s drill down a bit further into the very essence of this stunning car and look at the root of its monstrous muscle.

Despite performance of this magnitude, the RS 7 Sportback nevertheless manages to keep a firm grip on reality where economy is concerned. Thanks partly to an engine start-stop system it can cover up to 28.8mpg on an average run.

With the help of its two turbochargers, the 4.0-litre TFSI petrol engine delivers its formidable peak power of 553bhp between 5,700 and 6,700 rpm, and top torque of 516lb/ft between 1,750 . and 5,500 rpm. The turbochargers boost pressure, helping to generate incredible accelerative force.

This gives the German goliath a phenomenal 0-62mph acceleration

In the RS 7, the Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system enables you to tackle long journeys in all weather without fear of losing control. The car is also pinned securely to the road by an electrically extending rear spoiler providing additional downforce.

And when it comes to scrubbing off speed there’ll never be a problem, because behind the huge 20-inch

seven twin-spoke alloy wheels are four massive brakes which provide reassuring stopping power.

The interior of the RS 7 Sportback conveys the sporting theme with subtlety, but leaves you in no doubt you’re travelling in a very special Audi flagship. RS logos appear in the dials with their white faces and red needles, on the flat-bottomed three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, in the illuminated entry sills, in the rev counter and in the displays.

RS logos are also punched into the front RS super sports seats with their pronounced bolsters, integrated head rests and honeycomb-quilted Valcona leather upholstery. The two-seat rear bench, which is standard for UK models, also has well-defined contours for optimum grip.

And, as befits the ultimate incarnation of the A7 Sportback, the RS 7 features a list of standard equipment, and it is possible to upgrade the inventory even further with a portfolio of driver assistance, driver entertainment and driver information systems, including adaptive cruise control, night vision, a Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 15 speakers and 1,200 watts of total power. Awesome?

Garden Vegetable Risotto And finally: Summer is here...

...a little hit and miss on occasion but here none the less, so this recipe is for enjoying the fruits of our garden labours!

The cheese additions at the end of this are optional, but they’re worth adding in if you have them available.

And remember, risotto is a loose dish, a little like a rice pudding – or even a lot!

What you need: Ingredients: 150g arborio risotto rice 50g butter 3tbsp olive oil 750ml hot vegetable stock 150 ml dry white wine 1 long strip of lemon zest 250g broad beans (boiled for 1 minute and skinned) 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into short lengths 100g each of fresh (prepared) runner beans and garden peas 1 onion finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 bay leaf, 1 tbsp chopped fresh mint, and 3-4 sprigs of fresh thyme Sea salt and freshly ground pepper 100g feta cheese, crumbled, and parmesan shavings

Preheat the oven to 200/Gas 6 1. Mix the chopped mint with 2 tbsp of the olive oil, set aside.

In a large non stick pan, gently fry the onion in 25g of butter, until softened (5 minutes approx). Stir in the herbs, lemon zest and rice until everything is glistening.

2. Pour the wine into the pan and boil over a medium heat until reduced by half.

Next, add the hot stock 1 ladle at a time, stirring thoroughly between each ladleful. The liquid should be almost completely absorbed each time. Leave 1/4 of the stock for later.

Cook for approximately 15 minutes until the rice is tender.

3. Meanwhile, in a pan of boiling water, cook the runner beans for 3 minutes. Drain and return to the pan and toss with a little of the remaining butter, and season with black pepper. Set aside.

4. Remove and discard the thyme sprigs, bay leaf, and lemon zest from the rice. Stir in the peas, asparagus, and the broad beans with the remaining stock and cook for 3-4 minutes until tender.

5. Remove from the heat and stir in the feta (if using), then season to taste (the feta can be salty so season after adding this) and finally stir in the last of the butter.

6. To serve: spoon into deep plates, and top with the runner beans. Finally spoon over the minted olive oil and parmesan shavings.

You can use chop and change these vegetables to suit what you have in the garden.
