mendham parish “village of the year” sign unveiled Children from Mendham Primary School, parents and members of the community gathered in the rain to watch the unveiling of the “Mid Suffolk Village of the Year” sign. The unveiling took place on Mendham village green in October and the sign will remain there for three years.
Kathy Ferrar, Mendham and Withersdale Community Council Chairman, said: “We are all extremely proud of the recognition and the awards the parish has received. It’s a great community to live in and there is such a lot going on. We have achieved so much in the last

norfolk children perform at theatre royal Over 90 pupils from three South Norfolk primary schools raised the rafters at Norwich Theatre Royal on November 9th when they performed an opera that they composed themselves on stage. The children from St Mary’s Junior School in Long Stratton, Pulham Market Primary School and Diss Junior School have been taking part in a Norfolk Schools Project run by Norwich Theatre Royal.
The opera, titled “Stranded”, has a storyline and music created by the pupils, who were inspired by the ballet adaptation of William
golding’s Lord of the Flies. They worked with a team of professional singers, dancers and drama teachers to write their own mini-productions. Danielle Chapman, Key Stage 2 teacher from Diss Junior, said the project had been a unique opportunity for the pupils involved. “it’s helped them to create something of their own independently and take ownership of their own work.” as part of the project, pupils also receive an exclusive backstage tour with the theatre’s technical team who explained and revealed some of the behind-the-scenes secrets of the theatre, including lighting, wardrobe and props.

Another beautiful day, another lunch out… what a stressful life I lead!

s lunches go, this one was a bit different; no extensive menu, no wine, and no double damask dinner napkins. But it was one of the most enjoyable for different reasons.
of Hempnall. As the centre had remained unused on Mondays, the decision was made to open it as a café on the first Monday of every month for snacks and light lunches. This is the lunch I am writing about.
Hempnall Mill is an old windmill, with additional extensions built in 1979 by The Hempnall Trust (a registered charity) forming the big main room, associated offices and excellent catering kitchen. Four days a week the building is used as a day-care centre for residents
The café started up three years ago to provide a local venue for socialising for all ages, regardless of where they live. It continues to be successful, both in terms of providing social interaction and providing inexpensive, excellent food. Light lunches and snacks are available, including homemade cakes, and the café also helps with the financing of the mill, which has become more difficult over the years. Food is sourced locally wherever possible. Meat is from Hempnall Butchers and fruit and veg comes from the nearby Horseshoes Farm Shop. Fresh food donations
are gratefully received from the allotment holders and other gardens in the village. Lunch is cooked and served by a team of volunteers who, at the end of the meal take the weight off their feet, eat up whatever is left over, discuss how the day went and plan the next one! Well the description “light lunch” is a misnomer; I had a superb curry made from butternut squash and chick peas, and the friend I was with had Boeuf Bourguignon which she said was delicious. There was nothing small about the portions. For afters, I had fruit compote with ice cream, and my friend had homemade syrup & lemon tart. As the choice of food is dependent on what they have on the day, it is difficult to tell you what to anticipate, but you can expect a good, old-fashioned, two-course lunch in the company of extremely friendly people. Thus fortified, we continued on with our journey and on the way back, thought we would look in and see if there was any chance of coffee and some of the delicious-looking cake that we had spotted earlier. They were officially closed for the day, but despite the fact that all the volunteers were seated and having a well-earned rest, they still found time to pack up a couple of pieces of cake for us to take home. The Mill Centre is also available for casual and regular bookings and has the advantage of offering a full-catering kitchen. Christmas Celebrations and shopping at its best
true community occasion, Eye’s Christmas lights switch on and late night shopping event is all about local involvement. Eye locals once again brave the winter weather on the evening of Friday 5th December to celebrate the town’s traditional Christmas lights switch-on and late night shopping event. This year, Park Radio supply the music and Eye Town Council unveil its sparkling new Christmas lights.
Christmas lights start twinkling at around 6.00pm. Children from Eye Primary School then lead carol singing around the town Christmas tree, but are joined by the crowds of Eye who sing along to the festive favourites. The town’s plethora of shops and businesses tend to stay open late for Christmas shoppers and browsers,
and like to offer special treats to customers at this time of year. Inside Eye Town Hall on the evening of the light switch-on, the Church Bazaar features stalls and activities, as well as a very special visitor, in the shape of a red-robed, white-bearded, jolly gentleman. Celebrate the town’s traditional Christmas lights switch-on and late night shopping event. The central part of Eye is closed to traffic on the evening and the streets are dotted with stalls run by local organisations and charities raising funds for their various causes. Amongst those are hot food stands and a miniature fairground, to the joy of many of the town’s young faces. There is also a “Best Dressed Window” competition, stirring up some friendly
rivalry between the local shops. Who do you think is most deserving? This year’s light switch-on fun continues at other venues around the town thereafter, with music being hosted at the Klaxxon Club in Eye’s community arts centre, The Bank. And over at the Queen’s Head, revellers find it hard to resist the warmth of log fires and the promise of festive ales,
as well as free chilli and rice out in the garden marquee to keep out the, er, chill. Eye’s Christmas celebration may not be the biggest in the area, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in its sense of community spirit.

an all-star cast will bring the classic story of the boy who never grew up to the Norwich Theatre Royal stage this Christmas, from December 18 to January 18, with the family pantomime Peter Pan.

eading the cast will be Kevin Kennedy as the evil Captain Hook. Kevin trod the “Corrie cobbles” for 20 years from 1983 to 2003 as the kind-hearted Curly Watts. He will be joined on stage by CBeebies favourite Sid Sloane as the Dame (ship’s cook Sarah), while Cromer Pier favourite Ben Langley will be troublesome pirate Starkey. Peter Pan is a family favourite, telling the story of a little boy who can fly and spends his everlasting childhood on the island of Neverland. His exciting adventures bring him closer with fairies, pirates and other fascinating characters. Norwich’s panto stalwart Richard Gauntlett will be Smee and Ruth Betteridge, who played Cinderella in last year’s show, is also returning as Wendy, with Charlotte Baptie and Sinead Kenny, who both recently appeared on the
Norwich stage in West Side Story, making up the cast as Peter Pan and Tiger Lily. The show also gives local young people the chance to shine with two local boys cast as John and Michael Darling. This change opened a new chapter for the Greyhound. It has become a place that welcomes families and is somewhere you can not only pop in for a diverse range of ales, but can also be guaranteed a delicious homecooked meal alongside it.
The owner, Chris, has managed to bring the pub back to life and my children wanted to know when they could go back there to eat again! Chris has succeeded in creating a pub that is still great for drinking in, but also great for good, honest food at a decent price. We will definitely go back again soon and I urge villagers around the area to pop in and give it a go too.

The pub is very well known as a “drinking place”, often playing live music, but for a long time it hasn’t served food. That is until the new owners took over in 2012 and gave the pub a huge transformation and renovation.
I decided to take the children in for dinner one evening on the way home from school after a busy day. The pub opens its kitchens at 5.30pm, so it’s’s ideal for an early meal for the kids. We were made to feel very welcome by the bar staff when shown to our table. It’s a very relaxed and clean restaurant, with lovely wood floors and nicely spread out tables. There’s high chairs available for babies, and lots on the menu that children can choose from, including assurance that most of the adult meals can be halved for children. Maisie and Olly both went for the kids cheeseburger (£4.95 each), and I chose the homemade lasagne (£9.50). All the ingredients on the menu are sourced locally where possible and everything is homemade, including the desserts! Both Maisie & Olly said

For dessert, Olly chose the ice-cream sundae and Maisie wanted the cheeseboard from the adult menu. The waiter said the portions could just be halved so it was no problem.

This Christmas Harleston will be buzzing and there is no excuse not to catch some of the fun.
riday 5th December will see the Christmas Lights switch-on between 6pm and 9pm, organised by the Town Council and volunteers. This will be the usual glittering affair, with the centre of town filled with stalls, delicious refreshments, Santa’s Grotto at Harleston Information Plus in Exchange Street, and a variety of entertainments to please the crowds. Many shops will stay open till late. There are rumours of new Christmas lights and decorations

ust released is a DVD of the culture that has been carried since time immemorial in this ancient pub. It shows the many horsemen who arrive each Sunday with their families, in their pony and traps and with coloured high stepping cobs and drays. After the horses have been unharnessed, watered and fed their owners then imbibe some good Suffolk ale to be followed by banter and tales of fairs and horse deals, old sporting ways and love of country life. Gypsies in the company tell stories of being born on the side of the road in a gypsy wagon along with 16 others but still rejoicing in song and dance. After they have eaten and enjoyed a drink the man with the button accordion then starts playing often a waltz. Most of the company will then take turns to step-dance, followed by traditional singing before lighting up the gig lamps for the homeward journey. This DVD, entitled “The last of Old England� has been made by Neil Lanham, from Botesdale, a retired Suffolk auctioneer. eaLiTY: Modern and Contemporary British Painting is a new exhibition at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual arts, at the University of east anglia, Norwich. Curated by artist Chris Stevens, the exhibition brings together over 50 works celebrating the strength of British painting with some of the best and most influential artists of the last sixty years.
Uncompromising and direct, the work of each artist represented retains a strong reference to the real world, ‘the stuff of life’. While, to an extent, painting has been eclipsed in recent decades by the Minimal and Conceptual movements, installation, photography and film, REALITY testifies to the survival of painting as a medium and the impact of British painting today. Major 20th Century artists are represented such as Walter Sickert, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and David Hockney, alongside contemporary painters including Ken Currie, George Shaw and Caroline Walker. ah humbug! You should care, after all, you’re going to share your home with it, so start by choosing the right tree for you and your family.
In the past, the number one choice has been Norway Spruce – a dark green, bushy tree with a strong pine scent. It’s a fast-growing variety which is an advantage in terms of price, but unfortunately warm, drying air causes it to shed its thin sharp needles when disturbed, so it is really most suited to cooler rooms and conservatories, or for an outdoor display. If your home is cosily warm over Christmas and you’re not a fan of acupuncture, choose a “non-drop” variety such as Nordmann Fir. It’s a very elegantly-shaped and open-tiered tree with a pleasant, fresh fragrance and broad, soft-to-the-touch, glossy-green needles which hold incredibly well. This makes it a popular choice for busy family rooms. Always make your selection personally from trees which are not netted, that look and feel fresh, and that don’t drop handfuls of green needles when tapped on the ground. Real trees aren’t perfectly even in shape, so get someone to hold a tree out and give it a spin to find its best side, compare one with another until you’ve made a decision, then have the tree netted for easy transport home. Once in your care, remove its stocking and keep the tree cool and moist until it’s time to take it indoors. Saw a slice off the bottom of the trunk, then fix your tree firmly in to a stable water-retaining stand positioned away from drying radiators and open fires, and decorate to your hearts’ content!

They’re planted to be harvested (just like any other field crop) in a rotation lasting 8 to 15 years depending on variety and size required. Knock snow off plants Before it freezes, knock snow away from plants with a broom to prevent cold damage and broken branches. Avoid frosted grass Particularly when frost or snow blankets the lawn, avoid treading on it because frozen grass blades break underfoot and leave a footprint. It may also lead to compaction of the soil. Bring tender plants indoors Move to a frost-free location in full sun and make sure compost has dried out between watering.
Tender plants often go into a resting state during winter. Wrap container-grown plants Tie bubble wrap, hessian sacs or similar around large potted plants in winter as a layer of insulation to prevent roots from freezing. Tuck in and cover up veg Use a blanket of straw to stop the ground freezing around root crops and cover, as well as placing cloches over salad plants. Sarcococca hookeriana - a little evergreen shrub with deeply coloured leaf stems and little white flowers that give off a strong vanilla-like scent.
Viburnum bodnantense - a shrub characterised by its sweet smell and numerous clusters of pink blooms which appear during these colder months of the year.
Lonicera fragrantissima - more commonly known as the winter-flowering honeysuckle, this medium-sized shrub boasts dainty white flowers with a delightful, slightly-spicy scent.
Parrotia persica - also known as Persian ironwood, this winterflowering tree belongs to the witchazel family. It produces tiny, deep red flowers making it spectacular in any winter garden.

Security tips for dark evenings i
ntruder theft tends to take place in the evenings and the early hours but it is vital to lock doors and windows every time you go out – even if it is only for a short trip or to walk the dog. Use all the locks that are fitted to the door when you leave the building. If one of your locks is becoming hard to use try to get it changed as soon as you can instead of not using it. Three or five-point locking is the best form security for any type of external doors. Most double-glazing has window locks but older windows can also have extra security locks fitted. Outside, never leave a padlock open with the code numbers on show as
the code can be written down and used later. Try to chain ladders, bikes and other large items together as this makes it harder to move one thing without disturbance. Never leave keys outside under pots or mats as many crimes have been committed just by using a key found outside outside. Also never leave keys inside or beside windows and doors. Intruders are always looking for easy opportunities, so a professionallyinstalled intruder alarm and security lighting is always the best

he festive season means our pets suddenly find their homes filled with intriguing decorations, unfamiliar food and noisy house guests. although we may enjoy the festive fun, all of the extra hustle and bustle can be stressful and even hazardous to our pets.
Sparkly decorations and Christmas lights look appealing to play with but could be dangerous if swallowed or chewed. Turn off electrics when out of the room and don’t be surprised if your kitty wants to climb your tree – stop them and shut the door when you’re not around. Chocolate, onions, raisins and certain nuts are poisonous to many pets. Remember that stuffing, Christmas pudding and mince pies all contain these ingredients, plus cooked bones can splinter and cause a choking hazard. Alcohol is also a major poison to pets so keep drinks well out of reach.

Leave their favourite toys and treats there to keep them occupied and buy a pet diffuser which helps calm their nerves. Holiday time means car journeys, catteries and kennels. Light and Easy is definitely not a diet book; instead it’s a wholesome voyage of discovery in the form of 170 recipes which don’t compromise on taste. Village People caught up with TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, the man behind the recipes.
t
hough Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall hasn’t fully converted to being vegetarian, a summer of meat abstinence three years ago marked a turning point for the way he viewed his diet.“it made me a more creative cook,” he says, recalling the experiment that formed the theme for an entire series of his Channel 4 show River Cottage. it also provided inspiration for his latest recipe book, River Cottage Light and easy.“it’s got chapters on meat and fish, but probably 75 per cent of the recipes are vegetarian.”
There are just two things missing from the cookbook: wheat and dairy. “It occurred to me, ‘What if I just took those ingredients out?’” says Hugh, responding to the many requests from his readers for gluten and dairy-free recipes. He was interested in the challenge of cooking without them.
River Cottage Light and Easy is aimed at those of us who eat an unconsidered breakfast of toast almost every morning. Those of us for whom lunch is “grabbing
a sandwich”, and dinner is a big bowl of pasta - so that’s most of us then! “I’m discovering new oils, grains and flours like buckwheat,” Hugh enthuses. “And do you know what? The results are delicious.” Hugh is calling for people to show the same love and photo: Simon Wh eeler attention to vegetables as they do to meat. “I’m growing ing a lot of cucumbers at the moment; people think it’s a slightly boring vegetable but if you bash it, chop it and put a few Asian flavourings and a pinch of chilli in, even a cucumber salad on its own becomes really, really special.” With media commitments, books (he has over 20 published works now) and the thriving River Cottage to run, it’s amazing Hugh still finds time to grow his own veg from the family home in Devon. “It was getting on top of me a couple of years ago,” he admits. “I was so busy extolling the virtues of growing your own, fishing and foraging, that I wasn’t getting as much time as I wanted to do it myself.” He laid down some ground rules and vowed to spend more time practicing what he preaches to around one million and a half million River Cottage viewers each episode. “I love living in the country, I feel so rooted here. I’ve been in the West Country nearly 20 years now,” he says. “Devon’s great. It’s full of artisan food producers, fantastic cheeses, a lot of farm gate sales of meat – this is what River Cottage has been about from the beginning. In a brand new history series, Sarah Doig provides snapshots of children’s education in our region over the centuries.
n most modestly-sized parts of Norfolk and Suffolk during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries various establishments would offer board and tuition for young ladies. The curriculum in these academies was usually far from academic – in contrast from the average private school for boys. They offered to educate girls in all the main social skills and accomplishments such as music, dancing, drawing, foreign languages, needlework and embroidery. Some charged extra for skills taught by visiting masters such as arithmetic and handwriting. Ann and Sarah Burroughs from Botesdale in midSuffolk during the 1790s were daughters of a local tradesman who ran a boarding school for ladies in the village. A wonderful survival of their school is a card which would have been distributed locally, supplementing newspaper advertising. The card was found behind a fireplace during renovations at the former rectory in nearby Redgrave (with thanks to the owners for sharing their find). In it the Burroughs sisters “Return their sincere thanks to their friends, for the support and encouragement they have experienced; and hope, by the strictest attention to the deportment and progression of those young ladies entrusted to their A piano lesson in the early 1800s care, to merit their future approbation”. Whilst they state that most of the subjects are included in the price of ten Guineas per annum for those under twelve years of age and twelve Guineas per year for over twelves, the sisters charged more for fancy work or embroidery skills.

Among a collection of family papers now held in the Norfolk Record Office is a delightful diary written by Elizabeth (Bessie) Starling in the 1840s. Bessie lived and taught at a school for young ladies run by a Miss Woodward in Botesdale and her diary entries give us an invaluable insight into life in such an institution. Miss Woodward’s establishment was relatively small with about eight to ten girls. Bessie regularly gave music lessons and she helped teach her young charges to dance (they had a visiting fiddler to accompany them). She also gave individual Latin lessons. Many schools like the Burroughs and Woodward establishments often did not survive for more than a decade for one reason or another. Sometimes they had to close temporarily or even permanently due to outbreaks of infectious diseases such as smallpox in the neighbourhood. They were also dependent on a good supply of teaching staff, including those peripatetic teachers who educated the girls in specific skills. Salthouse
The village of Salthouse lies on the north Norfolk coast between Cley-next-the-Sea and weybourne. Recorded as ‘the house of salt’ in the Domesday Book, the marshes were used to collect sea salt – a valuable commodity in the past. Starting at sea level in the village, this walk takes you to the higher ground of Salthouse Heath, then back via the church. Distance: approximately 3.5 miles. Using oS Explorer map 251. 2 Salthouse Heath forms part of the ‘Cromer Ridge’, a glacial moraine. The heath has the largest cluster of Bronze Age burial mounds in Norfolk and is now an important wildlife site. h dear. What a lot of difficulties there are when talking about people – especially when more than one person is involved.
Do you say: “Him and I are going out”? Do you say: “Mother gave it to my brother and I”? Do you say: “Me and him, we are going out”? Let’s look at the first example: who is going out? For a start, I am, and “he” is too – not “him”. So just put the two correct references together. “He and I are going out” is correct. It is the convention that you put yourself second to be polite, but “I and he are going out” sounds clumsy anyway. The second example might sound correct, but should you always refer to yourself as “I”? No! If Mother denied your brother whatever-it-was she gave, you wouldn’t say “Mother gave it to I”, you would say “Mother gave it to me”. So why alter how you refer to yourself just because you had to share something with your brother? If in doubt, remove the other person and it all becomes more straightforward. Bearing that in mind, the third example is also wrong. You wouldn’t say “Me is going out” or “Me are going out”, would you? Neither would you say, “Him is/are going out”. So the correct way to say it is “He and I are going out”. Do you say: “Us girls are going out”? Who is going out? We are. “We girls are going out.” Do you say: “There is a box of chocolates for we boys”? Chocolates for who? For us. “There is a box of chocolates for us boys.” Do you say: “However long the sentence, us old lags who have done prison before can cope”? Who can cope? Us can cope? I think not! We can cope. To make sure, just get rid of the qualifying words (girls, boys, and old lags who have done it before) and it becomes more straightforward. one “When one falls off one’s horse…” is the example most often quoted to ridicule people for using the word “one”. I believe it was originally uttered by royalty, but

there is a misconception that using the word “one” is an attempt at being posh. However, it is actually a short way of saying “anyone” and is opposite to “no one”. So “No one really likes eating worms,” is correct because it refers to people in general. Therefore, “If one eats worms, one will not come to any harm,” is also perfectly correct and in no way regal or posh – it just means that anyone daft enough to eat worms will survive. “One should not eat worms.” That means anyone: me, you, the Queen and everyone else.

Mark Cocker is a hugely accomplished nature writer. Arthur Brough is something of a Jarrolds institution: a frequent visitor to the London Street store, Arthur is happy to share tales of his World War II exploits with fellow café diners, to the point where many of them feel the need to buy this little wartime memoir of Arthur’s time in the Royal Norfolk Regiment, much of it spent incarcerated in German prisoner of war camps. Moorcroft pottery
illiam Moorcroft was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, in 1872. He was the second son of a family already well-established in the potteries, with his father, Thomas, a revered designer and china painter specialising in flower subjects. William was a good student and showed an early interest in art, having inherited his father’s talents, and by the age of 12 he was attending design classes at the Wedgewood institute.
He went on to study at the Royal College of Art and obtained his Art Masters Certificate at the age of 25. He was offered a job as a designer for a large and influential company, James Macintyre & Co, where he experimented with his own pottery designs. Around 1896 he designed Aurelian Ware which was partly decorated with transfers and partly painted by hand. Moorcroft developed highly lustred glazes and used oriental shapes and decorations, and some of his techniques became closely-guarded trade secrets. He then developed his famous Florian Ware, with heavy slip and a translucent glaze which produced brilliance of colour. William personalised each piece of pottery with his own signature or initials. In 1913 he married Florence Lovibond, the same year he parted with Macintyres to set up his own pottery factory, Moorcroft, at Cobridge. There he employed staff from Macintyres and the business succeeded, with much being sold through Liberty & Co in London and Tiffany & Co in New York. Meanwhile, he and his wife had two children together; daughter Beatrice and son Walter. In 1928, Queen Mary made Moorcroft “Potter to the Queen” through a Royal Warrant, which was stamped on his pottery. His son, Walter, took over the management of the factory in 1945 – just before William’s death.

The Moorcroft family eventually sold their shares in Moorcroft on the open market in the mid-1980s. The company is now controlled by the Edwards family, and has been since 1993. In recent years, Moorcroft’s profile has grown internationally, both in quality and in value. Today, it leads the world of art pottery with its own distinctive design style. Moorcroft is selling more of its magnificent ware all over the world today than it did even in its previous heyday in the mid-1920s, and the Victoria & Albert museum has joined many other national museums with significant pieces of Moorcroft pottery in their permanent collections.

Exercise leads to a fitter, healthier and leaner functional body and it can also relieve stress, but exercise that is overdone – like working out for too long, too hard or too frequently – will create a negative stress that helps store fat. Stress can keep you fat or make you fat for the following reasons: It makes you hungry It makes you crave It turns on your fat storing physiology When stress hormones rise as a result of exercise that is too long, too hard or too frequent, hunger hormones like ghrelin and leptin change in a way that make you hungry all the time. This same stress physiology causes the motivation centres in the brain (areas of the brain that keep you goal focused and on task) to shut down. The final nail in the coffin comes from a hormone called neuropeptide Y (or just NPY). Under chronic stress your nervous system releases more NPY, which causes immature fat cells to grow into full-grown, puffy fat cells. hinelo Bally, who shot to fame as BBC TV’s popular Sewing Bee finalist, helped to button-up Hub Community Project’s charity auction in Wymondham when one of her unique creations went under the hammer.
The African-born 26-year-old showcased her skills on TV in early 2014 with a succession of stunning, elegant and colourful designs. Her appearance has been the springboard for her dream to become a successful international fashion designer with her own studio and staff. Yet the woman with a big heart for God will tell you she has no natural talent. “God is the most important aspect of my life and I ask him to endow my hands with excellence so this is really his work. I put the whole mission of designing in his hands when I pray,” says the hip Essex media graduate who donated a children’s dress this summer in a bold African print to help the Wymondham community. Her style and ability was watched by millions of viewers and two keen-eyed judges when she narrowly Chinelo Bally
missed out on taking the winning trophy oph during the eight-week Sewing Bee series as the assignments became more taxing. She blends her native vibrant culture with the classic Western silhouettes that she has come to love since moving to England from Nigeria with her church pastor parents and siblings when she was just four. During the BBC series the determined young designer rallied against nerves and difficulties with the support and prayers of her family and church and viewers often heard her frantic pleas for divine assistance. She says: “I love my church – it really does get behind people with support. My pastor, who is like a second mum to me, prayed and encouraged me throughout the series which was important. “Yes, I am a child of God and I want others to know that being a Christian does not mean you cannot be cool and beautiful – it just means you can be yourself,” says Chinelo who wants to be a role model for other young women who know her. She also hopes the television publicity will heighten her voice as an activist against child abuse and domestic violence. “I want God to use what I do for him since he is the driving force behind it. Abuse of children and domestic violence pulls at my heart-strings,” says Chinelo who is part of her church ministry to help its victims. “I want to work hard with bespoke fashion and be a showcase for the world so my voice as an activist can be reckoned with in higher places,” says the woman who also draws, bakes and uses her creative skills at her Pentecostal church. www.chinelobally.com

The vestibular system is a major contributor to our balance system and awareness of spatial orientation. It is made up of receptors located in the inner ear, which help with balance, head position, movement and eye control. However, the system can become damaged through the ageing process, injury and disease, so it is important to work at improving it.
Eyes, muscles and joints all help with sensory feedback, so they need to be flexible, toned and free to move. If the ankle does not have freedom to move, not only does it make walking difficult, but it also restricts its ability to transfer information to other parts of the body to react and assist.
So if the neck is stiff, it will have the same effect. Pilates classes are designed with this in mind. Small pieces of equipment are used to challenge and help build an individual’s range of movement. This increases stability, prevents falls and strengthens the whole body.
Balancing exercises help strengthen the vestibular system, because they gradually challenge it. Moving the head and or eyes, lifting a foot away from the floor and standing on a less stable surface can all help to improve balance.

ocal charity East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), which cares for life-threatened children and young people and supports their families, has gained planning permission to build a new children’s hospice in Framlingham Earl in Norfolk.
eaCH launched a £10 million appeal at the end of November and needs help! One of the first opportunities to support the appeal comes at Christmas, when eaCH is asking people to give an extra gift of £10 to kick start their £10 Million appeal through whichever means they prefer. if everyone in Norfolk did this, we would raise enough money to enable them to start building the new hospice right away.

So this year, why not plan ahead to prevent the huge credit card bills and associated stress that can take the shine off your start to the New Year?
Another way to keep the cost down is to agree with friends and relatives that you’re going to cut down on the cost of Christmas this year – either by imposing a limit on the amount you’ll spend or perhaps agreeing to only buy for the children.

The first task is to draw up a budget of how much you can realistically afford to spend on presents, Christmas food and going out. However, it’s best to not get too carried away, as you don’t want to still be paying for the Christmas tree, booze and presents come next July.
Alternatively, rather than spending money on presents, you could design and send your own practical vouchers where you offer to give up your time to baby sit, provide a taxi service, clean the car or even walk the dog. It will cost you nothing but your time and a little creativeness.

he long-awaited Care act 2014 aims to modernise the social care framework by consolidating decades of confusing legislation. With its 129 clauses and accompanying schedules, many significant changes have been made. This article focuses on a few points of particular interest to those whose future may involve social care. The Act seeks to promote the empowerment of individuals by involving them and other interested parties in the decision-making process. Local authorities will be under a legal duty to provide for an adult’s “eligible needs” subject to that person’s financial circumstances, and also to help people make decisions about their own care. The cost of “eligible” care costs will be capped at £72,000, which is likely to refer primarily to the costs of meeting a person’s substantial care needs. This does not include daily living costs, such as accommodation, or any extra costs incurred by electing to reside in a care home where the fees exceed those that a local authority is prepared to pay.
Once a financial assessment has been made, local authorities will be under a duty to offer deferred payment agreements in certain circumstances – which means fees are not payable until the person’s property is sold at a later date. This will be a relief for those who want to keep their home for longer, however, as interest will now be chargeable from the date of the agreement rather than the date of death, the long-term costs may be higher. Under section 70 of the Act, local authorities may be able to claw back any care fees avoided by an individual who has previously given away assets in an attempt to avoid such fees. It will be possible for the person who receives the asset – known as a “gift” – to be assessed and held liable for the fees at any time after the transfer.

he Fiesta has been made by the Ford Motor Company since 1976 and its name is known all over the world. That’s hardly surprising because the 38-year-old model has been manufactured in Europe, the USA, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, China, India, Taiwan, Thailand and South Africa. The Fiesta has come a long way from its familiar, original boxy shape. The latest car has established itself as a best-seller in Britain and around the globe after setting a new quality benchmark with a dynamic exterior and an interior optimised for comfort. The Fiesta, on test here in “Zetec” three-door form, has lots of room inside. Without rear doors it makes the fitting of child seats a pain, but once fixed securely, there’s more than enough space for the kids. Indeed, if you don’t have a brood, two adult passengers will find they’re not as cramped as in some rival superminis. The Ford has a reasonable boot as well, with enough capacity for the weekly shop. However, you’d struggle to cram a pushchair in on top if you needed .to take your ankle-biters to the supermarket. But the talents of the well-liked hatchback outweigh any gripes. The Fiesta continues building on its position as the UK’s top-selling motor with the launch of a fresh powertrain, which was fitted to my test car. Ford now offers a 99 break horsepower version of its 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine with the company’s six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission – delivering CO2 emissions of just 114 grams per

kilometre and 57.7 miles per gallon (on average) fuel consumption. The engine is a smart piece of machinery. It combines cuttingedge equipment, including direct fuel injection and turbo-charging, to deliver the might of a larger lump with the fuel efficiency of a smaller unit. The Ford PowerShift transmission uses electronically-controlled twin-clutch technology to move between gears. You have the option of staying in full automatic mode or, for a bit more excitement, dropping in to the gearbox’s “sport” setting. Indeed, the combination of EcoBoost and PowerShift is one of the most advanced and dynamic powertrains ever launched in a compact car. The zero to 62 miles per hour performance feels far quicker than the 11.2 seconds stated on paper. The steering is sporty, snappy and sharp too. Stock features on all Fiestas include Easy Fuel, which prevents filling up with the wrong type of juice; MyKey, which enables parents to limit speed, audio volume and other settings before loaning the car to young drivers, and daytime running lights to be seen in all conditions.
There are very few pocket rocket hatchbacks that are as pleasurable to drive as the Fiesta. It feels on the ball, which is clearly brilliant news on a winding rural road, but the car is also a delight on the humdrum trips thanks to its well-weighted controls, relaxed ride and first-rate visibility. The Fiesta is a sensational all rounder, achieved thanks to its styling, handling and technology. All this makes for genuinely gratifying and stress-free motoring. Throw a long list of standard safety kit in to the mix, plus a spirited yet efficient petrol engine, and the Fiesta Ecoboost Powershift really does offer a lot for its £15,195 price tag. braised beef rump steak
slowly cooked in red wine, mushroom and tarragon Martin Jarret has been working at a senior level in restaurant ant kitchens for more than two decades and has been head chef at the Park Hotel, Diss,, for the last six years. This issue he shares es one of his favourite delicious recipes with us.
Ingredients (serves 4): 4 rump steaks 200g each 150ml red wine 2 onions diced 1 tablespoon of olive oil 250ml beef stock Pinch of salt and pepper for seasoning 150g button mushroom sliced 25g fresh tarragon or 1tsp dried

Method: 1. Heat oven to 160째c and heat a pan with no oil. Season the steaks, add oil to the pan and colour the steaks all over before placing in to a casserole dish. 2. add diced onions to the pan and cook over a medium-low heat for one minute, then add button mushrooms and cook for another two minutes before taking off heat. 3. Turn pan heat up and add red wine when hot. add a tablespoon of gravy powder and stir until it comes to a paste then add beef stock and stir continuously to make the sauce. Now add the tarragon. 4. Place the finished sauce over the beef rumps, cover with greaseproof paper and foil, then place in to the preheated oven for two hours or until tender.
