We’re very excited here at VP HQ as we have been nominated for some National Awards. Annually in October we attend the Independent Magazine Publishers’ Conference and this year Village People has been nominated in three categories.

We’re hoping Village People gets recognised for its fabulous mix of editorial and local features, supplied to every single home in a 900 square mile area of rural Norfolk, together with its promotion of local businesses and services.

Our nominations include the ‘overall design’ of Village People with a special mention for our front covers. Let’s hope the judges ignore the old saying “don’t judge a book by its front cover” and feel free to judge away on our colourful magazines!

JUMBLE SALE SUPPORTS WAGOBERA Wagobera is a small local charity founded by Hartismere High School student, Emma Thornton, following her gap year teaching in Uganda.

WAVENEY VALLEY ORCHESTRAL WORKSHOPS The Waveney Valley Orchestral Workshops have been held biennially since 1988. They begin on a Friday morning and conclude with a free performance of the works studied on the Sunday evening, which has always proved highly successful and enjoyable in previous years.

The course is open to all, but Grade 6 and above sightreading is recommended. Study and rehearsal is carried out under the expert guidance of a guest conductor and about a dozen professional musicians. The orchestral membership covers young and old, professional and amateur and, typically, there are approximately 80 participants with players coming from Norfolk, Suffolk and beyond.

Emma met an 11-year-old boy called Wagobera Christopher, who finished top of his class at primary school but was unable to go to secondary school because his family could not afford the fees. She set up the charity and Chris is now studying clinical medicine at Kampala International University.

Nine years later, Wagobera continues to support a growing number of children and young people. The charity’s income comes from local fundraising events, and this year’s annual jumble sale is at Wortham Village Hall on October 4 at 2pm.

QUIZ NIGHT GENERATES £800 FOR HOSPICE Staff from Glasswells home furnishings stores have donned their thinking caps for an evening of competitive fun in aid of St Nicolas Hospice Care for the eighth year running.

In teams of four, staff from the shops, offices and warehouse joined together in the Place to Eat restaurant in Bury St Edmunds for a battle of wits.

Eighteen teams took part and competition was fierce – the leader board constantly changed, however victory went to the Commercial Furnishings department, “Contracts Corner”.

During the evening proceeds from drink sales and a raffle were added to the pot, making a total fundraising effort of £800.

Abby Mayes, Corporate Fundraiser for St Nicolas Hospice Care, said: “Thank you for making this year’s Quiz evening such a success. Annual events such as this one are absolutely vital in order to continue services at St Nicholas Hospice Care.”

WYMONDHAM ABBEY DEVELOPMENT FUNDRAISER A cheque for £250 has been presented to Rev’d Canon Christopher Davies following an open evening in aid of Wymondham Abbey Development Appeal.

The event was organised by Wymondham Lions Ladies, who supplied canapés, and Ward-Robes of Wymondham, whose summer clothes collection was modelled, along with a raffle including an original framed watercolour of the Abbey and a handmade patchwork quilt as the prizes.

Wymondham Abbey Development Appeal aims to raise £50,000 towards new buildings and facilities, historical interpretation and learning resources for the town.

A sum of £1.75 million has already been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Wymondham’s charitable trusts and individuals have pledged a further £950,000.

Another beautiful day, another lunch out… what a stressful life I lead!

e had arranged to go to a restaurant some distance away from home but were told: “We don’t do lunch” when we phoned to book. A last minute rearrangement saw us making a shorter journey, thus arriving at the Park Hotel 45 minutes early. My friend suggested walking into Diss – so we did – and it’s not very far. Forty minutes later we presented ourselves at reception and were shown to our reserved table, decorated with a pretty vase of fresh garden flowers.

My friend was ravenous (she is also slim; unlike me) so she ordered a starter of chicken liver pâté blended with brandy and herbs. This came with lots of Melba toast, chutney and a fair-sized salad garnish. I sat and watched her eat whilst I sipped my glass of chilled white wine.

Gorgeous! I finally succumbed to a tiny taste of the pâté, which I’d tried to avoid on account of calories, but it was utterly lovely.

For our main course, we decided against hot roasted food as we were pretty “hot roasted” ourselves.

After a few changes back and forth between us, I chose the

honey-glazed ham salad and my companion chose the salmon and prawn fishcakes, also with salad. I wished I could have had both! The fishcakes were very tasty and the portions were generous, as was my ham, which was excellent. My salad was accompanied by coleslaw and boiled new potatoes, which were improved exponentially by the addition of half-a-dozen butter pats brought to me by the efficient waitress – not that I actually needed all six!

My friend’s fishcakes were complemented with a Caesar salad and parmesan cheese (which, in my opinion, improves just about anything you put it on) and we agreed that they were a good, proportionate size – not overfilled with potato. We both cleared our plates as usual.

The service was friendly and timely with only one “Everything all right?”

– quite enough – during the meal.

I had thought that the hotel might be a bit old fashioned or dated as it had been there since we first came to Norfolk, but not so. It was elegant, quiet and spacious with a fresh, clean feel. We had arrived at noon, after which the place filled up slowly but surely with eager diners.

The waitress brought back the menu so that we could discover what delights were in store pudding-wise.

Evidently the cheesecake of the day was lemon and lime, which we both wanted. My slim friend conceded defeat, however, and chose apple crumble with ice cream. Both were generous-sized portions and I was granted a free dollop of ice cream with mine to make up for my hollow-legged friend’s starter.

Thoroughly satisfied, we ordered coffee to finish with. Nice, big cups of hot, strong coffee came to the table with the obligatory chocolate mint. Just how I like it!

Just before leaving I like to have a look round the place and visit the loos. I discovered that the ladies’ was down four steps, so I enquired if there were any others and was told that there was a ramp access to the ones we had used. If in doubt about this, it might be best to phone beforehand.

The car park is spacious and well signed – you enter from Park Road (A1066), just east of a small roundabout.

conduct in the field

I

Local historian and professional genealogist, Sarah Doig, highlights the bravery undertaken by men of our region.

n the last of my series of articles to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War One, I want to highlight the many acts of bravery undertaken by men from our region in defence of the nation. These acts were recognised by the award of medals such as the Victoria Cross, the Military Medal, the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Distinguished Service Order or by being commended by a “mention in despatches”.

During the First World War, the Victoria Cross (VC) – the highest military honour awarded for valour - was awarded to only one Norfolk Regiment soldier and two Suffolk Regiment soldiers. One of these was Corporal Sidney James Day of the 11th (Service) Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. At the outbreak of the war, Day was working as a butcher in Norwich and a month later he enlisted in the 9th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment.

Day clearly showed his courage and commitment as he was promoted first to Lieutenant Corporal and then, in August Distinguished Conduct Medal 1917, to Corporal. The citation in the London Gazette reads: “Cpl Day successfully commanded a bombing section detailed to clear enemy trenches, killing two and taking four prisoners. Where the trench was levelled, he went on alone to contact flanking troops. On his return, a stick-bomb fell into the trench where there were five wounded. He seized the bomb and threw it out, where it exploded harmlessly, saving the lives of the wounded. He

completed the clearing of the trench and remained in an advanced position Victoria Cross for sixty-four hours under constant fire. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to all” Later on in the war, Corporal Day received two injuries – to his thumb and thigh – and spent much of 1918 as a prisoner of war, before returning to his native Norfolk.

Many more soldiers from the region received the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) which was another high award for bravery. The DCM was awarded only to non-commissioned officers and one of the local recipients was Private Frederick G Bartrum. Frederick Bartrum was born in Wortham, Suffolk near Diss in about 1887, the son of an agricultural labourer.

Frederick was a member of the regular army, having joined the Norfolk Regiment some time before 1911 (at the time of the 1911 census he was serving with the 2nd Battalion in the Indian subcontinent). The medal Bartrum and others received was silver with the head of King George V on one side and the words “FOR DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT IN THE FIELD” on the other.

Although only a fraction of the brave men who fought for our country in the Great War were awarded such a medal, we should recognise that for every soldier and his family, it was a great act of great bravery and sacrifice.

anham Zoo has been a part of the local community for over 45 years. 2013 saw a major change when the zoo and its sister site, Africa Alive! achieved charity status under the auspices of the Zoological Society of East Anglia (ZSEA for short). Becoming a registered charity has presented the zoo with challenges but also opportunities.

What goes on at Banham Zoo? ZOOLOGY: With over 200 species of animal the zoo provides visitors with face to face encounters with some of the world’s rarest animals.

The zoo is also an active participant in over 70 European breeding programmes.

SUSTAINABILITY: Banham Zoo promotes sustainability within the organisation as well as to visitors.

EDUCATION: They deliver formal education sessions to over 12,000 children annually and to over 200,000 individuals through feeding talks, displays and presentations.

ACTION: As well as education and conservation activities at the zoo, they also provide financial support and expertise to externa . l projects around the world.

The aim is to continue to improve wildlife conservation, animal welfare and education and Banham Zoo is looking for volunteers to help with this.

WHAT DO THE ZOO VOLUNTEERS DO? Volunteers at Banham Zoo support the staff, not replace them.

Currently the volunteers help the

keepers, the education team, the gardens department and help run the charity shop located just outside the entrance to the zoo.

WHO ARE THE ZOO VOLUNTEERS? Volunteers range in age from 18 to 78 and come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are students, some are retired and others just want to do something a little different on their days off from work. What unites them all is a passion for nature and conservation and a willingness to get stuck in

I say Jeeves, what an extraordinary talent!

Made famous by the legendary Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, Jeeves and Wooster, the classic comedy, is making its way to Norwich this October. We caught up with the actor James Lance to discuss what can be expected from the popular double act.

J

eeves and Wooster are one of the most comical duos in literature and now a brand new production is heading out on tour to Norwich Theatre Royal.

James Lance, who will be playing Bertie Wooster, has a plethora of roles under his belt from iconic TV shows like Absolutely Fabulous and the Norfolk-based I’m Alan Partridge.

His latest role sees him taking on one of the great comedy roles of English literature when he plays the effervescent aristocrat Bertie Wooster. In typical PG Wodehouse style, Bertie finds himself facing two comedy challenges of matchmaker and silver cowcreamer stealer, aided and abetted by his ever-loyal manservant Jeeves.

James admits he was a bit worried about taking on the part. “It was a little daunting because you have the glorious spectre of Hugh Laurie having played the part so wonderfully well. I started to read some of the books and I have to say the process of finding my character has been a total joy.”

One thing that is new for James is visiting Norwich Theatre Royal and sampling Norfolk during his week-long visit on October 21-25.

“It will be a fresh place for me to visit and I am really looking forward to being in Norwich,” he said.

So it sounds like audiences are in for an autumn tickling of the funny bone and if the enthusiasm of James and his fellow cast is anything to go by, people are guaranteed to leave the theatre with a smile on their face.

James has already been playing Bertie opposite John Gordon in West End and will join forces with Sean Goodale to star in the show in Norwich. With just the three of them in the cast, John and Sean also adopt the personas of many other great Wodehouse characters. “I think we have all decided we need to have as much fun as we can,” says James, “and I am channelling my inner five-year-old into my character, of course.”

Being part of the show has re-introduced James to the wonder of Wodehouse’s over-the-top characters and knockabout humour, and James says there is absolutely no chance of the audience being bored.

“I really like the idea of theatre waking you up, and this certainly does”, he said.

One of the roles James is best known for here in the east is the long-suffering hotel worker Ben in I’m Alan Partridge. “Steve Coogan is actually a really good friend of mine,” he says. “I can’t tell you how much fun he is to work with!”

Antique silver hallmarks

he English hallmarking system began in 1300 to enforce the assay laws from the Goldsmith’s Hall – hence the term hallmark. Only silver containing at least 92.5 per cent silver to 7.5 per cent copper could be termed “sterling” and receive the official mark.

British sterling silver usually bears at least four marks: the maker’s mark, standard mark, town mark, and a date letter. Some also bear a duty mark and a commemorative mark.

The maker’s mark – Before a silversmith could register their own mark, they were obliged to serve an apprenticeship with a qualified silversmith, known as a master. After a specified period of time as apprentice, they were permitted to set up business on their own.

This meant registering their own mark, which was usually a combination of their initials.

The standard mark – The lion passant was a mark introduced in 1544 to designate sterling silver.

The town mark – Each assay office had its own mark making it easy to identify. Compared with London, marking of provincial silver was relatively haphazard and inconsistent. Pieces carrying rare or unusual provincial marks are highly sought after by collectors and, consequently, command a much higher price.

Only five assay offices are still in operation today, and their silver is marked with the following: London – a leopard’s head Birmingham – an anchor Dublin – a harp crowned Edinburgh – a castle with three towers and the deacon’s mark Sheffield – a crown The date letter – This mark appears as the letters of the alphabet. The various cycles of date letters are identifiable by the forms of the letters and the shapes of the shield which enclose them, and should be read in conjunction with the other marks on the piece.

Norwich assay marks can be traced back to the mid16th century, when the mark of origin was a castle surmounting a lion passant, a date letter and a maker’s mark. In the 17th century, a rose was added. However, silver marking in Norwich was erratic and very little – if any – was assayed after 1701.

Hallmarking is an extensive subject, but a little knowledge can go a long way. If new to collecting, be cautious when purchasing online as hallmarks from early pieces have been known to be incorporated in to much later pieces in an attempt to deceive the novice collector. Go along to a quality local antiques fair and speak to the silver dealers there. They will be happy to share their knowledge with you.

ust where are you supposed to put it? And where not? Why does it cause otherwise rational people to go around with a bottle of Tippex frantically blotting it out? And really pedantic types to write it in when it’s missing?

It’s called an apostrophe and it causes more bother than any other letter or character. So let us see if we can make it easy to understand…

You may have heard of the grocers’ apostrophe. Many a market stall boasts “carrot’s, sprout’s and plum’s” – but this is wrong! Believe it or not, I once saw a poster advertising a car boot sale with, evidently, “plenty of table’s and big pitch’s”. And it was taking place in “Beccle’s”… get out that Tippex, quick!

This last example needs further explanation because in common usage the final “s” is omitted giving us “my rabbits’ carrots”. Also, because they live together, “my rabbits’ cage…” is correct. The final “s” is omitted again.

Dandy and Fluff are pretty straightforward, but trouble can arise with Charles, James and people like them whose names end with “s”. Do you omit the final “s” as in the rabbit example above? Actually, no. The fact that the name Charles ends with an “s” is irrelevant; it is simply a name made up of random letters, just like Pat, Stephen, and Gladys. So “this is Charles’s hat” is correct, just as “this is Gladys’s bag, Pat’s gloves and Stephen’s scarf” is too.

Another use of the apostrophe is to show where letters have been missed out of words: “do not” is shortened to “don’t” by removal of the second “o”. Likewise, “you are” is shortened to “you’re” by removal of the “a”. All you have to remember here is to put the apostrophe in the exact space where the letter has been omitted. So “wer’e going out” is wrong; it should be “we’re going out”. “The’yre going out” and “theyr’e going out” are both wrong too – it should be “they’re going out”. It most definitely should not be “their going out”… but more about that in a later edition.

Next time: Me and you, you and me, you and I, my sister and I, me and my brother.

One time you do not need an apostrophe “s” is when the word is just a simple plural; where there is more than one whatever-it-is.

“My rabbit has a nice big carrot” is correct (one rabbit eating one carrot).

“My rabbits have a nice big carrot” (two rabbits sharing one carrot) does not need an apostrophe either.

Even “My rabbits have lots of nice big carrots” is correct (two rabbits, many carrots, no apostrophes).

One of my rabbits is called Fluff and other is called Dandy – Dandy always has the biggest carrot.

“The biggest carrot is Dandy’s; the smaller one is Fluff’s.”

Notice anything? The apostrophe has made an appearance because it denotes possession.

“My rabbit’s carrot…” = one rabbit, one carrot.

“My rabbit’s carrots…” = one rabbit, several carrots.

“My rabbits’s carrots…” = both rabbits, several carrots.

akeaways are easy and taste great, but unfortunately they pile on the pounds and leave us not feeling or looking great. Here are some top tips for takeaways that you can enjoy occasionally, without becoming unhappy about your weight.

Happy 103rd Birthday Doris

O

n the 21st August, a birthday party was held at Austhorpe House in Forncett to celebrate Doris Posnett’s 103rd birthday. Friends old and new and family from far and wide joined in the celebrations which included musical entertainment.

A local lady, Doris is well known for being the milk delivery lady in the area for a good number of years. Doris was also an accomplished pianist and indeed taught piano for many years.

It was only one year ago that she moved into Austhorpe House from her bungalow on Norwich road – a move of less than half a mile. Flowers, ers, gifts and a presentation birthday cake completed this happy day.

I

Search and Rescue for lost dogs

discovered there was a lack of dogs trained to search for lost dogs and decided this was something I wanted to become involved with. So I changed my lifestyle to dedicate time to being a dog owner and began my search for the right dog.

I was drawn to the Czechoslovakian wolfdog. The breed was a result of an experiment in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s to see if wolves and dogs could breed.

The offspring was developed by the Czechoslovakian military and they were used as search and tracker dogs, as well as patrol dogs. The military in the Czech Republic and Slovakia still have them as part of their K9 teams and the breed is also used in Europe for search and rescue.

I made contact with Orkwolf Wolfdogs and, after several interviews to ensure my suitability, became the proud owner of Loki.

Loki started his puppy training and, although Czechoslovakian wolfdogs can be difficult to train, they are very intelligent. He had an amazing nose and was give given similar training to the German shepherds Loki of the police force. Loki sho showed a real flare for “t “trailing” – following a scent and often finding articles along the way, until the final ar article is found – in re real-life this would be the lost dog.

In July 2014, a young puppy went nt missing and we were asked if we could help look for him. Loki and I went to the area the puppy was last seen to see if we could pick up his scent. Loki was also given the puppy’s bedding to sniff, then instructed to “track on”.

We tracked all day but unfortunately too many helpers had disturbed the scent.

Not disheartened, we returned to track the following day and eventually Loki managed to find the puppy’s hiding place!

Loki has also found many other dogs, including ones that are trapped, and has even been asked to carry out a search and rescue in Scotland for a collie that has been missing since October 2013. Hopefully we will be able to reunite the dog with its owners soon.

or fair weather gardeners now may seem a strange time to consider going outside and getting stuck into a bit of work, so it will come as a bit of a surprise to discover that instead of Spring, now really is the best time to do just that… and there’s lots to do!

A good tidy up will ensure that the view from your windows throughout Winter will be welcoming, with hedges clipped, neatly edged lawns kept free of fallen leaves, and borders smartened up by the pruning of most deciduous shrubs (excluding winter and early spring bloomers such as forsthyia, ribes and chaenomeles as you will remove their flowering shoots!)

Clearing dead material from herbaceous perennials as they die back into winter dormancy will also improve the outlook, but leave any with attractive seed heads as these offer interest for you and an important snack for wild birds.

There’s a huge choice of ornamental trees available bare-root, from showy acers (maples) to handsome sorbus (mountain ash and whitebeam), or if you’re keen on ‘growing your own’, fruit trees and soft fruit bushes are available in abundance. Why not be kind to wildlife and plant a native hedge, grow either a single species such as hawthorn, or mix it up a bit with blackthorn (just imagine the sloe gin you could make!), field maple, dogwood, wild rose and others. For a more uniform hedge, on lighter soils try stylish beech (either green or purple leaf ), but if the soil is heavy or the site exposed hornbeam may do far better and is very similar in looks. hemerocallis (day lilies)

Top tip - when planting up colourful winter containers, tuck in some spring flowering bulbs such as crocus or mini daffs for a bit of extra Spring cheer!

Although the nights are drawing in and the balmy warmth of Summer has diminished, the soil temperature is still relatively high, so any new plantings (of hardy plants) will soon put out fresh root growth and establish quickly before Winter sets in, even if there’s little sign of activity above ground.

Before the advent of container growing by nurserymen, plants were field grown and could only be safely lifted and transplanted from mid October through to early Spring. Although not so commonly offered these days, a large range of bare root choices are still available through us. One great advantage of field-grown plants is their cost in comparison to container-grown, they’re less labour intensive to produce as they’re not grown on and presented for sale in pots, so the end result is cheaper.

Not only this, but often the plants tend to be of a very generous size!

Roses and many herbaceous plants such as iris, hemerocallis (day lilies) and hardy geraniums are also available bare-root in low minimum quantities to boost your borders.

Plants are mainly lifted to order, and should be replanted as soon as possible, if you’re not quite ready tuck them temporarily into another spot (maybe on the veg plot) until you can plant them into their final position.

So give Autumn a big welcome and get out there, it’s a great time for rooting about in the garden!

ak trees have been around for about 60 million years, since the Tertiary era. The English Oak is one of 600 species and is generally considered the “king” of trees. It lives for centuries and is said to spend 200 years growing, 200 years standing still and 200 years dying.

A tremendous amount of folk lore is attached to the oak tree: Romans crowned heroes with oak leaves; it was an ancient fertility symbol; ancient Britons believed people were the children of the oak and the Green Man; the Druids revered the oak especially as a source of mistletoe; and it is associated with the thunder god – because oaks are struck by lightning more than any other tree.

Because of its strength and durability, y, oak has been used for house and boat building ever since the Iron Age. e.

Before that time, man was unable to fell the oak. Furthermore, acorn and beech mast has been important food stuff for livestock over many years. In the middle ages, the value of the wood was based on how many pigs the mast would feed.

The oak tree provides habitat for over 500 species of insect and invertebrate which, in turn, encourages birds and mammals – woodpeckers, tree creepers, tits, sparrows and warblers to name a few – thus drawing in hunting birds, such as owls, kestrels and hawks.

Since the canopy of the oak is less dense than most trees, a wide variety of plants flourish beneath. These plants attract small mammals like shrews and mice, as well as grazing

animals such as rabbits and deer, which foxes feed on.

Among the many reasons there are so few oaks left is the fact that it took 3,000 mature oak trees to build just one man o’ war (warship). Nonetheless, it’s not hard to visualise what England would have looked like 1,000 years ago, covered in oak forests. Let’s try to preserve these mighty trees for years to come.

Much of the earth is covered by oceans and lakes and as water evaporates from their surfaces, it rises in to the atmosphere forming clouds. When conditions are right, the water vapour in the clouds becomes rain or snow, falling back down for the cycle to start again.

The chef’s delights Village People caught up with Norfolk-born Michelin starred chef Tom Aikens to discuss what the Norfolk and Suffolk foodie scene has to offer.

N

ot everyone can boast a monopoly of eponymous restaurants and two Michelin stars by their mid-twenties. But for Tom Aikens, the foodie game was set in motion from an early age.

“I wanted to be a chef from the age of 12 and by 16 I had set myself a ten year goal. So I wanted a Michelin star, or at least to be known, by age 26. I was very cocky!” he laughs. Cocky he may be, but Aikens’ determination paid off and the chef had gained not one, but two, of the sought after stars by the predicted 26.

Growing up in Norfolk, the 44-yearold chef is quick to praise the foodie scene that has emerged in his county. “Going back to the early 80s there was not a particularly great food scene anywhere, let alone in Norfolk and Suffolk,” Aikens admits.

“Now though, Norfolk is a great agricultural land, with lots of great producers. There’s a lot of seafood caught locally and because of that

there are a lot of good restaurants in the area.”

Growing up just outside Norwich, Aitkens and his restaurants are now based in London, but he tells Village People he “spent a lot of time of the Norfolk Broads and on the coast,” and the local produce meets his impeccable standards.

“You get a lot of shellfish, crabs, lobsters form the North Sea, as well as very well-known potatoes, tomatoes, and asparagus.” Aikens gives not just Norfolk, but the whole of Britain a thumbs up when it comes to seasonal produce. “I’m a very firm believer that the products and produce supplied and grown in the UK are as good, if not better, than anywhere else.”

A stickler for seasonal produce, Aiken recently teamed up Walker’s Market Deli crisps, visiting Evesham to sample their tomatoes, Cornwall for their cheddar cheese and Italy for Market Deli’s balsamic vinegar. “As a chef seasonal produce is very

important, and this mirrors what the deli range is doing,” Aikens explains.

Managing a myriad of restaurants (not to mention writing three cook books) and jetting across England and Europe to meet suppliers, what’s a typical day in the life of Tom Aikens?

“I’m up around 6.30am doing boring office work for a couple of hours and then will either visit one of the Tom’s Kitchen restaurants or be on a trip somewhere.” Admitting, “I’ll sometimes work to 2am”, we’re glad Tom Aiken’s could spare an hour in this hectic schedule to chat about his home county.

The Wymondham Youth Bus This summer, Village People’s chosen local charity was the Wymondham Youth Bus, which has just celebrated a year on the road.

L

ily Goulder, editor of Village People Magazine, presented the Youth Bus team with a cheque for £200 at Wymondham Carnival at the end of July. Their plan is to spend the money on a website and installation of wifi on the bus, which will hopefully attract even more young people.

The Wymondham Youth Bus provides a free, safe and inviting space for young people on a Friday night (between 6 and 10pm), where they can relax. Word has spread about the bus and numbers have increased to around 50 young people using it during the four hours it is parked at Browick Park.

The bus was purchased through generous funding from four Wymondham churches, community grants, individual donations and interest free loans. It is operated solely by a great team of volunteers.

Local fundraising by the young people themselves has also added to the pot and this will continue in order to assist in ongoing costs.

WYB has spent a few lunch breaks at Wymondham High School getting to know students and it will be making a regular appearance once a month on a Tuesday afternoon from September.

WYB leaders were invited to be part of a committee called the Wymondham Youth Working Party.

The aim of this group is to discuss how existing facilities can be improved and whether new facilities

should be provided. ided It was noted ed at the very first meeting that the WYB was the only detached youth work present in Wymondham and the Police Beat Manager commented that her job had been made a lot easier since the WYB had been started.

WYB has been present at community events throughout the year, thereby developing community relationships. Through links with local businesses, the WYB team has been helping young people write CVs, find part-time work and start apprenticeships.

But it doesn’t stop there. The WYB team are in discussion with Norwich

Youth for fo Christ to see how ho the bus can be used in Norfolk schools with the ‘Who Cares?’ initiative. They are also considering using the bus for other youth clubs on weekday evenings.

WYB is clearly making a huge difference to young people in Wymondham and has even been presented with a certificate of achievement by the Mayor, in recognition of the dedicated service given to the town of Wymondham.

We hope that the donation from Village People Magazine helps the bus continue all this great work in our community.

port Action After Cancer does exactly what it says.

Founded by Coral Warren 19 years ago, it offers badminton, yoga and aqua-stretch to anyone who has or has had cancer to assist their recovery. Coral, who is an Advanced Badminton England Coach, had the vision to organise sport activities to aid recuperation and long-term rehabilitation for patients getting over the effects of cancer and the treatments involved. The importance of exercise is well recognised in general, but there is even greater benefit to cancer patients.

Members of Sport Action After Cancer have the choice to participate in one or more of the activities, which are all run by

qualified instructors. Not only do they improve mobility, fitness, breathing and mental agility, but participants have gained a terrific sense of wellbeing from the activities – whether by relaxing at yoga or smashing a shuttle-cock!

Sessions take place on Wednesday mornings at the UEA Sports Park, Norwich, and all abilities are welcome from beginner upwards.

There is a break for refreshments and socialising during the morning, allowing members to support each other emotionally and some have formed friendships outside the group. For many, it has totally revitalised their vigour for life.

A recent addition to Sport Action After Cancer has been the formation of a choir, which is again open to anyone who either has or has had cancer, as well as their partners and/ or carers. Singing also has immense health and wellbeing benefits and complements the sport activities available. Choir takes place on a Wednesday afternoon in Norwich.

There are two very tenuous local connections here (of which more in a moment) but they’re simply an excuse to feature a piece of nature writing so finely crafted and moving I want to tell as many people about it as possible. This is a book about the training of a hawk. Meanwhile, the author is reading an earlier classic of nature writing, T.H. White’s The Goshawk and musing on that book; and also suffering deep grief at the death of her father, becoming by her own admission slightly unhinged. The two local connections? First, Helen Macdonald will be visiting Jarrolds on 1st October to talk about the book.

This is the autobiography (expertly ghosted by experienced writer and Canaries fan Ed Couzens-Lake) of the famous ex-Canary and Wales international, Jeremy Goss. Gossy is of course famous for his goals, including that goal, scored at Bayern Munich’s Olympic Stadium and one of the fondest memories of Norwich fans of a certain tain age. Those goals were few and far between, but often spectacular and they came during some of Norwich City’s most successful seasons, including their time in Europe. The Bayern goal was perhaps the highlight in Gossy’s career, but his was hardly a sudden rise to fame: he’d been at the club for a decade prior to that game, setting an unofficial record for the highest number of reserve games played. Hard and difficult times either side of his ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ make a fascinating football and life story that should please the fans.

This is the fifth book in the Jack Fellows series of Broadland mysteries and Chris Crowther’s many fans will be pleased to have the latest instalment. From that devastation rose a new library: the Forum that we know today and shortly afterwards the Archive Centre was built. This building, near County Hall, now houses the Norfolk Record Office, the East Anglian Film Archive and the Norfolk Sound Archive. This book tells the whole remarkable story of the original destruction at the old library and the trials, tribulations and final success of the creation of the new Archive Centre.

Endurance capacity helped humans evolve to dominate the earth. But while we couldn’t run as fast as a lion or strike as fast as a snake, we could run for hours or even days and wear down other species.

Our bodies were not designed to sit in front of a computer, TV or in our cars for eight or more hours a day, but this is the normality today. As a result, we have a growing population that is overweight, with short, tight leg muscles from under-use that creates postural changes and leads to back issues.

This doesn’t have to be the norm. A couple of very good ways to promote cardio-fitness and strength is using run or sprint intervals and kettlebells. Short bursts of speed with low rest periods help to increase aerobic capacity, while kettlebells use high-speed motion that derive from the biggest muscles in your body, creating whole-body movements. This increases energy expenditure, resulting in muscle growth and fat loss.

Sewing up the Past and Present at the Cathedral Norfolk journalist, Sandie Shirley, spotlights the inspiring stories of men and women from the region and beyond that have seen them reach for victory. For more stories visit: www.refreshingwaters.co.uk She turned the light open space on the first floor of Prior’s Hall, Lower Close, into a series of work rooms.

After enlisting 12 volunteers she helped source the necessary suppliers from Norwich and further afield so the Broderers’ Guild at Norwich Cathedral was afloat just two months later in 1998.

“We opened one day a week at first but soon increased to keep abreast of the mounting work. Six months’ of advanced confirmed orders testify to what has been achieved and some of the work comes from Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire.”

R

oyal College of Art graduate, Helen Jenkins, helps facilitate a team of Norfolk stitchers so they leave a heritage of church textiles for future generations that can be viewed at two forthcoming workshop tours.

Helen stepped into the new role of workshop supervisor for the Broderers’ Guild at Norwich Cathedral 16 years ago. Since then she has pioneered the work at the Cathedral and its diocese while developing contracts further afield.

Together they create new contemporary designs for the Cathedral and parish churches and breathe new life into century’s old workmanship so it can be useful and admired again for up to 150 years.

The Guild works with velvets, silk damasks and dupions woven in shimmering patterns in pur purples, reds, greens and golds which are bought fr from major UK suppliers but are largely imported fr from India and Europe. Modern gold cords and stranded multi-coloured cotton threads are used fo intricate hand sewing but machine sewing is for also used for many of the vestments.

Her favourite is an altar frontal for St Peter’s Chur Westleton Church, in Suffolk. It took five years to complete, from the initial consultation, sourcing materials, design n development and various ious samples and represents the wild flowers at the church’s annual festival including poppies, harebells, primroses and the unique Dunwich rose.

“These things will outlive us so we are leaving a legacy as we look after church textiles,” explains the Anglican Christian.

Other notable pieces include the repair of the Bishop of Norwich’s Birkbeck cope with its purple ple and gold embellishment and a modern fusion of red and gold flames representing Pentecost.

“The work is good and it gives me joy,” says Helen.

Three weeks after she moved to Norfolk from the other side of the country she saw the job advertised and knew it was for her.

With the festive season approaching - aside from not drinking altogether, are there any natural remedies that can help to alleviate a hangover?

This time of the year alcohol intake is increased dramatically for many of us. A hangover is often the price to pay for overindulging on our favourite tipple.

Prevention is the best way to avoid that hangover but alternative remedies can help. Make sure you drink plenty of non-alcoholic uids! One of the main reasons we are left with a pounding headache is because alcohol dehydrates the body. Drinking water before going to bed and first thing on waking will help to re-hydrate you.

A hangover can also leave you feeling weak and light-headed.

This is because the sugar in alcohol is used by the body extremely quickly causing existing supplies to fall too low.

uatrefoil launched its ninth book, Lest We Forget, with an exhibition held in Rickinghall Inferior Church in August.

The book, researched by Diana Maywhort and Deborah Wells, gives information on most of the men named on the war memorial for WWI from the villages of Botesdale, Redgrave and Rickinghall – many of whom were relatives of Deborah. Diana researched and interviewed descendants of the men and obtained photographs and personal stories of them where possible.

The book includes other men who returned from the war that are, therefore, not mentioned on the war memorial.

The launch exhibition included displays on WWI, WWII and Basil Brown, who discovered the Sutton Hoo ship burial just before WWII started. A presentation was also given on the Home Guard in WWII and the planned defences for the villages of Botesdale and Rickinghall, as well as a talk on the recorded memories of Arthur Bryant who lived in Botesdale at the time. More than one hundred people attended, many of them family members of the men.

Smart Money Secrets Student insurance –

a must have for life at University

oung people heading off to college this year will be faced with soaring fees and learning to cope with debt, but unfortunately many could end up seriously out of pocket due to inadequate insurance.

Take a look in the average student’s room and you’ll discover an array of expensive hi tech items, including laptops, iPads, Kindles, TVs, digital cameras and smartphones.

Specialist Insurer, Endsleigh recently revealed in its 2014 Student Survey, that the average value of students’ gadgets was almost £2,900.

As expected, laptops and netbooks are the most common items, owned by 96% of students, while 91% said they own a smartphone, 40% of students now have a tablet and 17% have an e-reader.

Despite this, 40% of the students surveyed did not have an insurance policy and 13% were not sure if they were covered.

In addition, students are four times more likely to make an insurance claim than any other person, with Endsleigh’s research also finding that 56% of students have lost or damaged their smartphone.

It’s a sad fact of life that students are a prime target for thieves and street robbers, with a reported one in three being a victim of crime each year.

The chances are you’ll have your smartphone and laptop out and about with you every day so only having basic cover which only covers

items in your room simply won’t be enough for many students.

So if you or someone in your family has just started University this autumn, what are the options available if you want to protect your possessions?

Some students will just assume that their parents’ home insurance will come to the rescue should things go awry, but that could prove a risky strategy.

While some mainstream insurers including Aviva, Direct Line and Esure offer student extensions on parents’ policies, not all home and contents policies give you this option, so check the small print before you go away, rather than waiting until you make a claim and then finding that you’re not covered.

Alternatively you could consider a specific student insurance policy from providers such as Endsleigh, E&L Insurance and Barclays.

If you’re thinking about taking out insurance to cover you at university but are put off by the premium, just add up the cost of all your possessions and think about how hard it would be to replace everything should the worst happen – this will hopefully make the decision a no brainer!

2. Keep a separate back up of your course work, precious photos and music in case your laptop is stolen.

3. Ensure that you check the security of your accommodation when you arrive and raise any safety concerns with the landlord/halls of residence immediately 4. Install a timer switch for the lights, which will give the impression that someone is in the flat/house even when you’re not.

5. Try not to draw attention to valuable possessions when walking around the town or campus.

hether entering into marriage, civil partnership or cohabitation, both parties would be well-advised to agree mutual ground rules and expectations. A properlydrafted agreement entered in to freely, with competent advice, will encompass both financial aspects, as well as lifestyle and family expectations.

People worry that suggesting an agreement will be seen as unromantic but, as Tolstoy infers, a successful relationship depends not only on romance but on working together to deal with problems and setbacks.

Where there are children of an earlier relationship to be considered, the agreement can cover what is to be done with the property that each already owns if the relationship were to end, as well as jointly-acquired assets. For couples who intend to start a family, the level of support will be secured for the parent who gives up work for childcare responsibilities, including how to finance pension provision for those years and how inheritances are to be treated – especially if invested into a joint asset or venture.

The picture becomes more complicated where different faiths and nationalities are concerned.

In which faith and culture will the children be raised? In which country will the family base itself? Also, the couple must be aware of the need to check whether their agreement will have any force if the family moved to another country as different jurisdictions may apply – they may not recognise same-sex or cohabiting partnerships as valid, for example. This may adversely affect not only finances but also whether one parent can have contact with their children.

At present, cohabitation does not carry any financial obligations for the couple towards each other as there is no such thing as a common law husband or wife. However, this is likely to change in the future so be prepared.

his Mercedes-Benz is zippy on country roads and dynamic and frugal around town or on the motorway.

But this isn’t just your standard high-quality Merc. The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) to be available with the company’s newgeneration permanent all-wheel drive system, 4MATIC. The GLA is less imposing than many SUVs, and therefore it fits perfectly into the day-to-day urban lifestyle.

At the same time the 4MATIC allwheel drive system, fitted to my GLA 220 CDI model, guarantees plenty of recreational enjoyment.

So, once you’re away from the daily routine, the car could tackle, say, rough terrain, the beach, and loose ground without a problem.

The dashboard consists of an upper and lower section, allowing surface structures that are different in look and feel. Matt and glossy graining creates an attractive light effect and five round air vents are integrated into the dashboard.

Watercress, Wild Rocket and Potato Soup with Girolles and Crisp Parma Ham Mark Elvin, Head Chef at The Wildebeest in Stoke Holy Cross, has shared with us this delicious winter warmer ideal for lunch.

Ingredients: 500g watercress 500g wild rocket 1 large white onion 4 medium-sized potatoes 3 pints of vegetable stock 1 sprig rosemary 1 sprig thyme 4 slices of Parma ham* 5 girolle mushrooms

This dish can be served hot or cold – enjoy! * Please note, the Parma ham is optional for a vegetarian alternative.

Method:

1. Peel the onion and potatoes and finely chop both.

Sweat them off in a dash of oil for about two minutes, without allowing them to colour.

2. Add both the herbs and the vegetable stock. Bring to the boil then let simmer.

3. When the potato becomes tender and soft, add both the watercress and wild rocket and cook for a further two minutes.

4. Blitz in the food processor until smooth and adjust the seasoning to taste – remember the watercress and rocket are peppery.

5. Place the Parma ham in the oven for 10 minutes at 160°C/320°F, or until crispy.

6. Sauté the girolles for one to two minutes in a frying pan.

7. Pour the soup in to a bowl, scattering the girolles on top and breaking up pieces of Parma ham to garnish the soup and add texture.
