As the holiday season approaches, so does the anticipation of fun and laughter for the children of Anza. Some parents however might be dreading the holiday time, due to the lack of funds to buy their children a present for Christmas.

From The Heart understands this dilemma and has been helping out for 11 years. Christy James, the new president of FTH, recently took over for the previous president and founder, Linda Heart and has been involved with FTH for approximately seven years. She has been very involved the past five years in the group which was founded 11 years ago, to meet the needs of the community.

FTH holds rummage sales a couple of times a year in preparation for the annual Christmas giveaway. The group also does a huge

A slew of talented volunteers made Thanksgiving Day extra special for many local Anza and Aguanga residents. The Anza Community Hall hosted a dinner that was organized. prepared, served, and cleaned up by members of Anza’s F.U.N. group, Living Hope Church, the Christian Motorcycle Association and students from Olivet University. Anza Valley Gas generously donated $300 to help cover expenses.

The feast featured deep-fried turkey, succulent ham, green bean casserole, salads, rolls, mashed potatoes, yams and all the traditional trimmings, topped off by sugary treats. Seconds were graciously provided to anyone More than 100 people packed the Anza Community Hall for the annual Thanksgiving Feast Thursday, Nov. 24.

RIVERSIDE – As winter nears and temperatures cool, affected residents now have access to warm centers across Riverside County.

“Because some people may not be able to escape extremely cold temperatures, we have worked with our community partners to open warm centers to ensure the safety and comfort of residents and visitors throughout Riverside County,” said Brenda Salas Freeman, executive director of the Community Action Partnership of Riverside County.

The warm centers, which opened Dec. 1, can be found in locations such as local libraries and community centers and will be open to the public at no cost. The centers will be available through March 31 as temperatures warrant.

Forest Service Volunteer Association volunteers were honored with certificates of appreciation by the San Bernardino National Forest officials Dec. 4, in Idyllwild. Bernardino National Forest, San Jacinto Ranger District in the past year were honored Sunday, Dec. 4.

The volunteers that offered their services on the wilderness trails, the forest service campgrounds, the biologists and lookout towers

in the forests and wilderness areas surrounding the Anza Valley and above the San Jacinto and Temecula Valleys enjoyed a dinner at the Idyllwild Veterans of Foreign Wars Idyllwild Post. The dinner was catered by Gary’s Gourmet of Idyllwild.

Offering praises and thanks to the volunteers that include hikers, wildlife monitors, equestrians, wilderness rangers, crosscut sawyers, fundraisers, the forest fire towers and packers were U.S. Forest Service officials from the San Jacinto Ranger District.

“If it weren’t for you, I don’t know what we would do,” said John Ladley, Supervisory Natural Resources Specialist representing San Jacinto District Ranger Arturo Delgado.

Each of the volunteers attending received a certificate of appreciation from Ladley and Andy Smith, Forest Service coordinator for the FSVA. Each received a Forest Service water bottle with Smokey the Bear printed on it.

Visitors to the San Jacinto Forest often will find the uniformed FSVA volunteers on foot or on horseback patrolling the wilderness trails checking permits, dismantling illegal fire rings, clearing the

designated trails from fallen trees, building trail water breaks and generally assisting the trail visitors with directions and good advice.

FSVA volunteers are in the ranger station’s front lobby helping visitors and manning the store. Others are at the Forest Service campgrounds helping with maintenance chores.

The volunteers also help biologists monitor the forest wildlife and endangered species. Their work functions as the eyes and ears of the regular forest service employees.

Especially honored at the dinner were FSVA volunteers who provided more than 100 hours of service in wilderness areas of the forest. They included: Robin Boyd, Adam Roberts, Greg Rolfi, Jana Desrocher, Denise Edminston, Robin Roberts, Bob Romano, Alan Truman, Emery VanZandt, Joe Bressi, Shelly Kibbey, Ron Krull, Patti Hudson and Rick Wilkerson.

Equestrian FSVA volunteers providing more than 100 hours of volunteer service on the trails and in the parades, were Barbara Youngman and Karleen Esparza.

Esparza told the volunteers that due to a number of the parade riders and equestrian patrol members leaving or injured this past year, the equestrian FSVA is seeking new

members for the troop and urged those with horses to join and invited other equestrians who have traffic worthy and calm in nature horses in the community to apply for the volunteer parade and trial service.

FSVA President Bob Romano announced the Board of Directors for the FSVA in 2017 will be: Karleen Esparza as vice president and equestrian parade representative; Jana Desrocher, secretary and retail store manager; Denise Edmiston, treasurer; Barbara Youngman, equestrian coordinator; Rick Villela, website coordinator; Rick Wilkerson, wilderness coordinator and board members at large Patti Hudson, Robin Roberts, Chip Hurn and Joe Bressi.

Anza Valley Artists officers for 2017 were named at a recent meeting. The Anza Valley Artists group continues to grow in the Valley with more than 17 members.

The AVA President Rosie Grindle will remain in her post for another year since the bylaws require two years of service. The new vice president is Daniel Hare who is in the process of building a new home after moving from Orange County.

Patsy Kile remains as secretary for her third year. “We really appreciate her staying on because she does such a fantastic job,” said Jill Roberts a past president. Roberts will remain on the executive committee as a consultant.

Nancy Swanson will remain as a treasurer for her third year.

The Anza Valley Artists work to inspire and encourage each other to produce meaningful creative artwork, in a variety of media. The local artists put on a special show and auction twice a year in Anza.

The group meets the third Saturday of each month at various locations, attend field trips to further their creative skills.

At least one person was killed in a two-vehicle, head-on collision on Sage Road near Minto Way Monday, Dec. 5. The area where the accident occurred is just south of the City of Hemet. The fatal wreck was reported to California Highway Patrol officials at 7:12 a.m., according to a CHP official.

An unidentified woman, 46, from Hemet, was killed when a 2009, Scion XB, driven by Riverside resident Tracie Bell, 53, drifted into the southbound lane, directly into the path of the Nissan.

The two vehicles crashed head-

on leaving the driver of the Nissan trapped inside her vehicle. She died on the scene according to a press release issued by CHP San Gorgonio Pass.

Bell sustained significant injuries and was transported by AMR to Inland Valley Hospital. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

CHP officers from the San Gorgonio and Temecula area stations and other emergency first responders were dispatched to the crash after multiple 911 callers reported the accident to CHP emergency dispatchers.

The Sage road remained closed for approximately two hours while officers conducted their investigation, according to CHP Public Information Officer Darren Meyer.

The unidentified woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene about 7:36 a.m.

Drugs and/or alcohol were determined as contributing factor(s) in this collision, according to the CHP press release and the collision is being investigate by CHP Officer Eagleman.

CHP officials are conducting an accident investigation and have not released the cause of the accident.

backpack giveaway at the back to school event at Hamilton High School which includes school supplies, shoes and haircuts for the students in attendance.

The most recent fundraiser for FTH was a Dinner Party at the Anza Community Hall. The Hall was decorated in preparation for Christmas and many volunteers were working to make sure the event went off without a hitch. It looked to be a full house Nov. 19, as the Hall filled with residents who came out in support of the effort.

The dinner – much like a traditional Thanksgiving feast – offered turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberries, rolls and much more. The waiters were very attentive, going around and making sure eveyone’s cups were full to the brim.

FTH helped 425 children receive Christmas presents last year and estimates to have around the same – if not more – this year. They make up paper stockings for each child and put the gender and age, (not the name for privacy reasons) then they have suggestions to what the child would like to receive. The suggested amount is $25 for a wanted gift and $25 for a needed gift. The presents are given away before Christmas and all are blessed to be part of it, whether they give or receive.

A raffle was held during the dinner with Christian Lanic as the caller of winning tickets. FTH gave away a table full of prizes, the biggest of them being a 42-inch flatscreen TV. Many raffle tickets were sold and a lot of people came out winners. An unnamed firefighter was one of the winners and gave his prize to little Emma Booth. She was surprised and very thankful. It is hard to see a table full of presents and not be able to open any. The smile on her face was priceless.

Headliner entertainment announced for 71st annual Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival INDIO – The annual Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival is pleased to announce a starstudded performance lineup for the 2017 fair.

The Eli Young Band will be performing at the fair Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m. With three No. 1 hits under their belt as well as a Grammy nomination and an Academy of Country Music Award for song of the year for their hit “Crazy Girl,” the Eli Young Band approached their second BMLG Records’ album “10,000 Towns” with a sense of confidence and purpose. “We were genuinely excited about making this new record,” bassist Jon Jones said.

Voz de Mando will be performing at the fair Sunday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. The band made a name for itself with the self-released albums “Levantando la Vos” and “12 Impactos de Alto Calibre,” both in 2009. The early success led to a contract with Universal Music Group’s Latin music imprint Disa Records.

In 2010, they made their major label debut with “Con la Nueva Federacion.” One of several songs on the album written by Miguel Gaxiola, the corrido or Mexican ballad “Comandos del M.P. (500

Balazos),” was a breakout hit single for the group, reaching the Top Ten in the Billboard Regional Mexican Songs chart.

Served from 1 to 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, the dinner attracted people from all walks of life and was an opportunity for socializing and meeting new friends. More than 220 meals were provided, with 18 turkeys fried and 7 hams baked.

“I had a great time, there are so many nice people that work this event and also attend. The food was wonderful and I knew so many of the people there,” said Diane Sieker from Aguanga.

The volunteers worked through the morning hours to ensure a perfect meal and friendly, warm experience. The tables were smartly decorated and the food set up in a buffet line style. From frying the turkeys, cooking the hams and casseroles to carving and serving, these volunteers made it happen.

“Look at what we can accomplish when nobody involved cares about getting the credit for the results. This area has so many amazing people that I am humbled just to be able to serve alongside them,” said Bill Donahue of Living Hope Church.

Living Hope Church puts on a monthly free home cooked meal event for anyone that wishes to attend. Anza’s own F.U.N. group of dedicated volunteers hosts a weekly food giveaway. The Christian Motorcycle Association has chapters all over the country. The students from Olivet University volunteer selflessly as well. The Anza school is a private Christian institution of

Those who understand the Constitution know that the election of the president does not actually happen until December, this year the 19th, and never in November. They also know that a popular vote has never been legitimized by the Constitution or any amendment to it. In fact, the people as individuals are actually excluded.

We have discussed why in previous columns. The selection of a president was left entirely to the state legislatures and what is called the Electoral College.

The Constitution states, “Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress.” Only indirectly were the people involved, more populated states having more members of the House of Representatives and thus www.anzavalleyoutlook.com

more electoral votes.

But these electors were not to be senators or representatives, “or Persons holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States.”

The electors were sometimes referred to as “wise men” because presumably their major function was to preserve the freshly created republic. Those with a vested interest outside the common good were excluded. They simply wanted persons of seasoned integrity, stability, wisdom and achievement but actual qualifications were left to the state legislatures. Political parties did not then exist to confuse this process or promote special interest.

These electors are “to meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and VicePresident … they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and of all persons voted for as Vice-President, and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate.”

Thus the “real” presidential election is held in the 50 state capitals plus the District of Columbia, and the results are sealed and sent to the president of the Senate. Sealed suggests out of public or media

view, the results to be known at the same time as sister states when opened before both houses of Congress. Congress determines “the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.” This year it is Dec. 19, as mentioned. The press rarely covers this election because they can’t spin or manipulate it.

When Congress reassembles, “the President of the Senate,” Vice President Joe Biden, “shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted;—The person having the greatest number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed.”

Today that number is 270 electors.

So how did the popular vote come about when there exists no language in the Constitution for it and it undermines state dominant influence in the process? The breakdown began in 1824 after the Electoral College denied the presidency to Andrew Jackson, the most popular man in America due to his success in the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. His supporters, believing the denial to be an injustice, created a straw vote

Granted the “real” presidential election in December, when the Electoral College vote is taken, is the most difficult part of the Constitution to understand and is easy to oppose because it is so undemocratic. I ask my students how many months they spent studying the propositions on the last California ballot before voting? Months?

Days? Hours? Seldom was it more than the least amount possible to give them a “gut” feeling. I then ask why they should have the same voting power as someone who did spend months studying an issue. When put this way they better understand the principles of a republic, and why our system historically has gone to such great lengths to find those who do.

so that the people could participate in the election even though this vote had no power.

Over time the media empowered the popular vote, and itself, by treating it as the “legitimate” vote for the president belittling the Electoral College process as unfair and undemocratic. Seldom do they remind us that it works because we are not a democracy, but a republic, and that none of the branches of government are democratic, most especially the Senate and Supreme Court. Andrew Jackson had to wait until he could convince the seasoned citizen voters of the Electoral College that he was not too emotional for the office. He did so four years later in 1828. Today the media seldom cover the real election of the president in December; such is their disdain for it.

Political parties also contributed to the breakdown. Today instead of looking for electors possessed with understanding of and loyalty to the concepts of a republic, loyalty to political party became primary.

With winner-takes-all legislation in most states, almost forcing electoral consensus as a state, even making it unlawful for electors to deviate from the party line, the independence of the electors to protect the nation from those who would destroy the republic in favor

I awoke this morning to the definite feel of winter. I know it was colder than normal because my little dog tried to bite me three times (not wanting to leave the warmth of the bed). That’s OK she got over it.

In Anza, you can depend on several things when it comes to winter. Cold, windy and cold and windy. Oh, I really should mention a couple of other things. This morning when I stepped outside the sky was so blue it almost hurt to look at it. I could feel the sting of the cold but to old mountain men that is almost a welcoming feeling.

A winter morning like this has a feeling of hidden expectation, it I suppose stirs a primordial instinct that seems to be telling you that you must do something, and time is a-wastin. Young people venture into the woods and old people pull out the blankets.

Days are filled with the sound of axes hitting wood and the smell of fresh split pine. The different warmth of the fireplace or woodstove. Anza has a habit of having summers that are long enough to get most people around here tired of summer, the winters are the same; Always glad for the first day of summer and always glad for the first day of winter.

I think that people in the olden days started gathering in the wintertime for warmth. The warmth of a fire and friendship. In my younger days, winter was an excuse to go 4-wheelin – hunting, fishing or just plain running around. It seems to be a season when people have more time to help their neighbors.

You’re not working on gardens or pulling weeds.

Then there is Christmas. I guess some people think that Christmas has become too commercialized over the years but in my estimation, it is what you personally make
