Temecula council race features narrow candidate field, certainty that a newcomer will join the exclusive panel
Kim Harris Special to the Valley News Mayor Alan Long was presented with a petition bearing over 40,000 signatures during the regular Murrieta City Council Meeting on August 19. The petition pledged support in Long’s handling of the immigration issues faced by the city in early July when three buses carrying nearly 150 undocumented immigrants were forced to turn around rather than drop the group for processing at the Murrieta Border Patrol Station.

Tim O’Leary Staff Writer A rare feat will occur in Temecula in November when at least one political newcomer will be elected to the City Council. Three residents are vying for that elusive distinction. A narrow field of five candidates will compete for three council seats

that are up for grabs at the polls. But the vast name recognition and political strength of two longtime incumbents – Jeff Comerchero and Maryann Edwards – may keep two of the three open seats out of reach of the challengers. A recent retirement announcement by Councilman Ron Roberts has set the stage for the election of one newcomer. Roberts’ exodus will also leave big shoes to fill,
as he took office in 1992 and has served a record five terms as Temecula’s mayor. The three challengers – Angel Garcia, Cecilie Nelson and Matt Rahn – candidly acknowledge that it would be tough to defeat Edwards or Comerchero. But each challenger is upbeat over their prospects of winning a seat at the dais. Garcia was the lone candidate to identify the need for specific
changes or council actions in a ballot statement. In phone interviews, Edwards and Comerchero rejected many of Garcia’s contentions and said there are no hot button city issues this time around. The need to raise the abundant funds required to circulate the candidates messages will also factor large in the race. Spending on

The invite was sent, photographers were on hand, and even Murrieta’s Mayor Allen Long was in route for the next Ice Bucket Challenge. A team of reporters from the Valley News was standing on the doorstep of Murrieta resident Anthony Carbajal’s home, ready to roll when the event came to a halt, frozen without notice. Carbajal made an ice bucket challenge video that went viral. In his video, not only did he talk about his family’s battle with the disease known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, he challenged talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres and pop singer Miley Cyrus to take the challenge as well. Carbajal’s video had caught the attention of DeGeneres’ producers. The ice bucket challenge to DeGeneres was accepted and as a result, Carbajal’s contract stated he could not do media interviews until
his segment on Ellen airs on television, bringing the event scheduled for last Friday to a screeching halt. As a result, Carbajal’s sister Vanessa spoke for her brother, freezing the interview and Mayor Long’s ice bucket plunge. Carbajal now has a national platform to raise awareness for ALS and the community is invited to rally behind a neighbor whose family has been suffering for years. Although Carbajal cannot speak directly with the Valley News this week due to contractual constraints, the story of he and his family’s personal struggle with ALS is one of the reasons his ice bucket challenge has garnered attention in the national spotlight. Carbajal’s version of an ice bucket challenge included washing a car in his sister’s pink shorts and a red bikini top showing off his sense of humor. Carbajal’s humorous approach seemed to hook viewers
