Anza’s Calvary Chapel to host day of summer family fun Jodi Thomas Anza Valley Manager Calvary Chapel High Country will be hosting one day of free summer family fun with a new twist on Vacation Bible School starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 12. see page A-7 Robert Love lets his sister Sierra Love sit in his racing mower and lets Brooklyn Love wear his helmet.
By Allison Renck On Saturday, June 14 the quiet town of Anza became a little less quiet, because the Anza Racing Mowers were once again racing. Every second Saturday during the summer months, Anza Racing Mowers can be found at their track behind Diner 371. It’s not hard to miss because these mowers are kicking up dust, roaring around the
track and creating entertainment for those that come out and watch. Kasey Cordes from Anza, one of the spectators, came out to watch the lawn mower race because her daughter had recommended it as a great event. Kasey said that it was exciting and fun. She said that she was happy she came out. “Its 100 percent Anza,” Kasey said “It’s just real good fun.” Pam Watson is usually out rac-
ing, but this time she was out volunteering to flag the races at the event. She said that on Saturday’s event, they had 20 racers, which is an increase from last month. She said the group has been doing the races for 6 years and it’s their third season at this track. The organizers of the Anza Racing Mowers use the American Racing Mowers Association (ARMA) as their sanctioning organization.

From ARMA’s website you can find local mower groups, the rules that the Anza track uses at races, members point standings and membership information. The website even has a media section that offers video of races in Anza. The focus of the organization as it appears in their rule book is “to race for fun, friendship, trophies,

Summer begins with M-COR’s monthly garden tour party By Allison Renck On June 14 the Food and Garden Group of Mountain Communities of Resilience (M-COR) had their monthly Garden Party Tour. This month’s event was held at the house of Jordy and Pat Jordan which is located in the Terwilliger Area of Anza. Every month during the summer, someone involved in M-COR hosts a get together that highlights their garden. The Jordan’s home is located in the rural area of Terwilliger, off one of the many dirt roads located in Anza. When you enter their property it appears like so many of the homesteads in Anza, Redshank and sage dot the landscape. The property seems immense as you walk from the parking area toward their house and the views of Thomas Mountain are beautiful. As you travel further onto the property you are greeted by a brown sided two story home that blends in well with the trees shading it. see M-COR, page A-6

VFW Post #1873: July news By Tonie Ford The mystery plants coming up in the compost pile are still a mystery. They’re shaped like watermelon but the color and leaves are wrong. I thought of butternut squash, but the shape is wrong. Then we discovered a volunteer zucchini plant in a pot in front of my son’s trailer. Since the soil isn’t fresh from the compost pile, it must have been deposited compliments of a blue jay. City folks just don’t know what they’re missing. see page A-5

AVMAC’s special speaker to address the possibility of multi-use trails in Anza on July 9 ANZA - At the upcoming Anza Valley MAC meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9 at the Anza Community Hall the prospect of trails in our community will be discussed. Allison Renck, a local resident of Aguanga, will be presenting information on the possibility of having dedicated trails in the Anza Valley. The presentation will include a short power point about the benefit of trails and then the rest of the presentation will be in a workshop format, so the residents of Anza Valley can express their vision of what a trail system might look like in the Anza Valley.
Some topics to be discussed include ideas on where trails should be located, where to place connector trails with established trails, ideas on ways to obtain easements and more. Presenter Allison Renck is an avid equestrian and hiker; she has lived in Aguanga with her husband Ken and their children Charlene and Dustin since 1992. Allison is the education chairperson of the Redshank Riders, a local unit of Backcountry Horsemen of California and the High Country 4-H Hiking Project Leader. In her professional life she is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Allison has a passion
about trails and she believes that trails could benefit the Anza Valley. “Anza is in the perfect place, surrounded by four beautiful areas; Thomas Mountain (National Forest), Upper Anza Borrego Desert, Beauty Mountain Wilderness and Cahuilla Mountain,” Renck said. “When you ride or hike around town, everywhere you look you see the mountains. It’s my humble belief it doesn’t get much better than that.” So if you are interested in the possibility of trails in the Anza Valley, please come and join the community in discussing this option.
