Looking for something really different to do? Visit the Fifth Annual “Gourd Festival” hosted by San Diego County Gourd Artists and California Gourd Society groups in Southern California. Free admission and free parking will be available at the event, which will feature classes, gourd art, crafts exhibits, vendors, demonstrations, raw gourds for sale and much more. Gourd art involves creating works of art using hard-shell gourds as an art medium. Gourd surfaces may be carved, painted, sanded, burned, dyed, and polished. Gourd decoration, including pyrography, is an ancient tradition in Africa and Asia as well as among the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Gourd crafting and painting has

evolved from early hand carvings to the modern day use, by some, of electric wood burners and highspeed pen-shaped rotary tools that can be used to inscribe almost any design. A wide variety of gourd shapes and sizes yields an array of art pieces, including: ornaments, bowls, sculpture, vases, and wall art such as masks. No longer considered just a craft, gourd art is being elevated to the point where it has been featured in a number of galleries and magazines. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Saturday, June 28 – Sunday, June 29 at the Bates Nut Farm located at 15954 Woods Valley Rd. in Valley Center, Calif. Artists Spring Show Manzanita Ranch hosts Highlights 14 Local Artists L.A.-based radio show By Allison Renck The spring show for the Anza Valley Artists was held Saturday May 31 at the Anza Community Hall and all types of artistic talents were displayed from watercolors to gourd art and penciled art. Exhibiting were 14 local artists; each displayed their own unique style of art. Many of the crafted pieces were at sale at the event. Jill Roberts is the current President of the Anza Valley Artists (AVA). She explained that the local artist group hosts two shows a year, one in spring and the other in fall. Each of the two events has a guest artist and the spring show’s artist was Ricardo Breceda. Breceda is a world famous metal sculptor and his art focuses on horses, western and local themes, garden art and dinosaurs. His work can be seen along Highway 79 near Vail Lake just east of Temecula, where his studio is located. It can also be seen in the Anza Borrego Desert dotting the desert floor along the roadways. At each show the AVA also holds raffles of local artwork donated by the clubs artists; the funds raised

go to benefit the Anza Community Hall where the show is held. AVA President Jill Roberts had a display of her paintings at the art show of horses and outdoor scenes. Roberts is a mural artist who also teaches art and her classes have a unique flair. Her signature class is called “Art+Vino” and students of the class sip wine and learn to paint at the same time.

Two of Roberts’ students, Kris Rasmussen and Kathy Pizula from Temecula, arrived to the event and had nothing but praise for Jill’s “Art+Vino” classes. They said that they really enjoy taking her classes because she is

Many fall victim to heat during the hot summer months. Certain medical conditions as well as certain medicines can make a person more vulnerable, and so does age. Young children and the elderly find themselves at a greater risk than other groups when temperatures crest to the top of the thermometer. Thinking ahead and putting together a plan of action on how to stay cool is key to avoid heatrelated illness and death. A person may think they have all they need to keep cool but there’s always the chance an emergency could occur. A person’s evaporative cooler (swamp cooler) or air conditioning could break, or they might opt to leave the air conditioning off
