Eric Cooper signs Hamilton’s first football Letter of Intent
Section Volume 14, Issue 14
Anza Electric Co-op; The challenge of democracy By Kevin Short “No government can continue good, but under the control of the people.”- Thomas Jefferson How often do we complain about our government? It seems as if there’s always something negative to be said about the decisions and actions of our leaders; however, I believe that the heart and soul of a free and functional society is the ability to democratically elect those who represent us. We are a society of individuals, with those in government positions selected to speak for us all. It works that way with our cooperative as well. A very important principle of cooperative governance is democratic control. We elect those amongst our membership that will represent the entire cooperative in matters of policy and financial prudence. We call these individuals our Board of Directors.

By Jodi Thomas Hamilton’s Senior Quarterback Eric Cooper has been approached by William Penn University, out of Iowa to sign a National Letter of Intent for Football and Track and Field, which is the pinnacle of a high school athlete’s career. William Penn’s athletic teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. They are a member of Midwest Classic Conference for most sports, and af-
filiated with the Mid-States Football Association for football. This is Hamilton’s first Football Letter of Intent to be signed. Hamilton’s Track and Field Coach Patrick Williams was instrumental in bringing Cooper’s accomplishments on the football field as well as on the track to the attention of William Penn who offered to sign the senior, granting him a scholarship for Football and Track and Field which he excitedly accepted. According to Head Football Coach
Keith Moorman, Cooper’s leadership and talent on the football field spearheaded the team’s success to victory. Hamilton’s Football Team won the 2013 Arrowhead’s League Championship, shutting out every team played at a league game, setting a record for Hamilton as well as the Arrowhead league. According to Coach Williams, this year Cooper stands to break a record running the 400 meter. Cooper’s parents said they could not be prouder of his athletic success as well as his
signing. “It is a dream come true,” said Robin Cooper, Eric’s mom, “He has wanted this since he was young.” Hamilton’s Track and Field games have just started so those interested can catch Eric Cooper run the Hamilton Field during hometown meets. The Hamilton Bobcats Track and Field Team’s next home game is a non-conference meet vs. Linfield Christian on Wednesday, April 23 from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

By Allison Renck When you are a member of a volunteer organization, your free time often becomes volunteer time. Often the volunteer time is hard manual labor, which gives you calluses and sore muscles. Other times the volunteer time is filled with days of meeting people, hosting an information booth and helping to create an event that equestrians and trail users will enjoy. Backcountry Horsemen of California 2014 “Travelin Your Trail Thru Life” was that event. The event, which took place at the George Ingalls Equestrian Event Center in Norco, Calif., consisted of a wide variety of different events for people who enjoy riding their horses in the great out doors. Anza’s BCHC unit, the Redshank Riders, was out in full force
on the weekend of March 21. The unit helped man an information booth, put on a trail trials event, and made sure all the vendors had a profitable weekend. The unit also single-handedly hosted a wine and beer tasting event that would put the Temecula wineries to shame. The highlight of this event was being able to see training techniques demonstrated by wellknown horse trainers Jerry Tindell, Robin Bond and Shawna Karrasch. Many of the attendees were also able to be entertained Friday night by Western Music Association Award Winner Dave Stamey. It is estimated that over 40 Redshank Rider Members participated and gave their time at this event. Considering the drive to Norco, that was a great turn out in membership.

Anza Valley Property Owners Rights Team or AVPORT was founded to fight abuses by Riverside County Code Enforcement and operates mostly in an advisory capacity to home owners to ensure their Civil Rights are protected. However, the team has grown substantially to include volunteers that are engineers and lawyers and has partnered with others to deal with the complexity of land use regulations, building permits and code enforcement. Some of these participants are Packard Construction, Hydrascope Engineering, and Irontree Consulting and Mitigation. The success of AVPORT is noted by the sharp reduction in code enforcement complaints in the Anza territory; in 2011 there were 275 complaints, in 2012 there were 86, and in 2013 there were only 13. “This is mostly due to the cooperation with Code Enforcement‘s Third District Superintendent Victor Ray,” Said Mike Machado, board member for AVPORT. “He wants his staff to be part of the community which is the way it is supposed to be.” “Darrel Durant, Code Enforcement Officer in the Anza territory, is a testimony to the changes Code
Enforcement has made,” Machado said. “I now have residents commenting on how well they were treated by Officer Durant. Unfortunately, that is not the case elsewhere as AVPORT receives code enforcement complaints from San Diego to Orange County. Complaints have come out of various cities including Hemet, San Jacinto, Menifee, Murrieta, Oceanside, and others. The only city with a zero complaint record thus far is Temecula, according to Machado. Recently, Machado was key note speaker at a gathering of businesses and residents of the City of Menifee. The topic of conversation was the complaints about the City’s abuse of its businesses and outrageous permit costs, but mostly about what to do when code enforcement invades their properties and what to do when you get a violation. Some cases are so severe that it is hard to imagine that any Government in the United States would do these things to their Citizens,” Machado said. “It will become more prevalent with time as most people do not know their Rights or understand that they are allowing the Government to take charge of their lives.”

So what if the President does executive orders! Did not prior presidents do the same thing? Yes and no! George Washington did 8, John Adams 1, Thomas Jefferson 4, James Madison 1, James Monroe 1, John Quincy Adams 3, and Andrew Jackson 12. The first seven presidents totaled 30 executive orders over forty-seven years. The most recent seven presidents Barack Obama 168, George W. Bush 291, William J. Clinton 364, George Bush 166, Ronald Reagan 381, Jimmy Carter 320, and Gerald R. Ford 169 totaled 1,859, over forty years—sixty-two times as many. Obviously something has radically changed. A review of the literature shows that, in fact, Barack Obama has
