Christmas is round the corner.

One of the best things you could wish for is to save our public green spaces in Spelthorne. Spelthorne Council has published a consultation document which will strip 71 green spaces in Spelthorne of their existing protection as Protected Urban Open Spaces (PUOS) This campaign has been extended to allow further support so you can comment until December 6th. Either write to your councillor urging them to protect the green spaces and/or add your name to the petition: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/ petitions/save-our-greenspaces-in-spelthorne

Halliford School Centenary

The original school building in Laleham Road Halliford School was founded in 1921 as Shepperton Grammar School, and occupied a building in Laleham Road, just by the present junction with Manor Farm Avenue. It provided education for boys and girls from the ages of 5 to 14. The school was founded and owned by the first Headmaster, Alfred Dobree Toplis, who had become a teacher after service in the First World War. In about 1929 it moved to Halliford House, by the Thames in Russell Road, which is its current site. The whole school was accommodated in the large 18th century mansion, with a few ancillary buildings such as a wooden gymnasium.

In 1935, Mr Toplis sold the school to a Major Fyson, who took over as headmaster. He and his wife changed the name to 'Shepperton School', and also established the 'Shepperton School for Girls' in the adjacent Willow House (now on the other side of Wadham Close from the school). started a kindergarten in the same building.

In 1946 the school again changed hands, the new proprietor/headmaster was Maxwell Morrison, who changed the name once more, to ‘Halliford School’. Mr Morrison also closed the School for Girls. After another couple of short-lived changes of ownership, in 1956...

….the Board of Governors organized a buy-out for the sum of £2000, ending the procession of private ownership and forging Halliford School as it is today. Michael Bullivant was appointed headmaster by the Board in 1958.

library was added adjacent to the school hall, followed by changing rooms, a new Music Room, and a swimming pool.

Mr John Crook took over as head in 1984 and more expansion of the school’s facilities followed, culminating in the Baker building in 1991 and the John Crook Theatre, opened by actor Frank Finlay, a Shepperton resident, in 2001.

Phillip Cottam succeeded as head in 2002, and during his tenure the new school sports hall, library and 6th form centre were constructed.

The current head, James Davies, took up the reins in 2017, and despite the challenges of Covid, the school continues to thrive and expand, with the new Woodward building being opened on 10th November.

Pantomime. A Christmas Tradition Photo, Laleham Players

By John Taylor It’s that time of year, when at theatres throughout the country we hear the sound of “He’s behind you”, “Oh yes it is” and “Oh no it isn’t”. A festive outing for all ages, a visit to a pantomime is great fun. It’s usually a child’s first theatre experience, with the excitement of their first ‘Panto’ being something they will always remember. The audience, the bright lights, watching the dancers, changes of scenery, hearing the band, and seeing the many different characters. I remember being taken to a pantomime at an early age, and my wife and I have taken our own children, and in recent years the grandchildren. We enjoy the experience as much as they do.

One encyclopaedia describes this type of entertainment as ‘A Christmas play, loosely connected to a fairy-tale or nursery-rhyme which was developed in Victorian and Edwardian Britain’. From the Latin word Pantomimus, Roman productions were based upon myth or legend, and music was supplied by a flautist. Performances might be in a private household or else a lavish theatrical production with a large orchestra. In 16th century Italy pantomime had its roots in ‘Commedia dell’arte,’ an entertainment which used dance, music, and a cast of mischievous actors, known as Harlequins. In the early 17th century they appeared in English comic plays, introduced by theatre impresario John Rich. This was an early form of pantomime. The stories involving magic, acrobats, and lovers. In the late 1700’s, the sets were made more elaborate, and by the Victorian era this form of show had become a popular custom at Christmas. With stories based on children’s tales such as Cinderella, Peter Pan, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk, Dick Whittington, and Mother Goose. The Principal Boy was, and continues to this day to be mostly played by a woman. Whilst the dame is usually played by a man in drag.

Impresario Augustus Harris being mainly responsible for the modern lavish productions. The audience is encouraged to join in with singing, booing the villain, or cheering the hero, and sometimes children are invited on the stage to join in with the fun. Slapstick is often a part of any performance, as well as jokes about current news items. These shows are as popular as ever, still traditional, but now frequently including on stage, pop singers, comedians, actors and presenters seen on television, and modern technology has made the sets even more amazing. Productions usually begin in late November or early December, and continue through into January, with two or three performances most days.

After the Pandemic which last year restricted performances, there is now a full choice of pantomimes available this coming season.

Whether in London or at a local theatre, or village hall, seeing both professional and amateur actors taking part. A Yuletide Holiday treat, not just for families but for anyone wanting a fun filled enjoyable afternoon or evening at the theatre.

A Matter of Life and Death

Local girl launches Been There charity helping young adults with body image issues.

What is Been There?

Been There is a digital platform and safe space where young adults with body image issues can find support from trained and vetted Mentors with similar experiences.

Why did you set up Been There?

For one simple reason: when you’re young, feeling alone and struggling with body image issues, talking to someone who’s Been There can literally be the difference between life and death. After 11 years struggling with my mental health with an eating disorder, all I wanted was to speak with a person who could relate – I only just found someone before it was too late. That person saved me. I no longer felt ashamed or judged. I could talk freely, over the phone, at no cost, without ever even meeting. This was so powerful that I have been on a mission to provide the same service for other young adults ever since – so they can speak to a Mentor who has Been There and gets it.

What is the need?

More young people than ever face body image issues in today’s world where social media serves to exaggerate image consciousness and anxiety, pushing people to conform and compare themselves just to fit the current look. Such issues are closely linked with self-harm and suicides, affecting 1 in 5 adults. Been There provides a solution, and it is more necessary than ever.

Van Wonderen’s Christmas Window

When I was little I remember my parents taking me to London at Christmas time to see the lights and the Christmas windows. I seem to remember Hamley’s and Harrods had particularly wonderful displays of snow scenes and animated snowmen etc. It was magical.

But we don’t have to go to London. Van Wonderen Flowers on the parade in the village, decided last year that we all needed some cheer. So Dennis decked out his window display with a model village complete with trains and windmills which were animated. It attracted so many children, whose faces lit up with glee at this magic.

So this year Dennis van Wonderen has done it again. This time the village is bigger and better, with many new attractions. He wanted to give as many people the chance to see it and enjoy it as possible so it will be up from November to the end of January. It is animated in the late afternoon and evenings so do go along and experience the magic for yourselves. Meanwhile you will see we have featured the village on this months front cover, and here is another view of it too. Thanks Dennis!

We Are Clouds by Sue Munson

My current work is inspired by the faded grandeur of ancient buildings. The layers of peeling paint, fractured walls, and colour recall a time and beauty that once was, when beautiful paintings graced the walls of churches, and domestic dwellings. My contemporary interpretation of these frescoes is revealed in paintings which are distressed, suggesting another time, another place. Hints of Gold and Bronze appear among the earth colours. I work energetically trying to recall a memory or feeling, which I hope on viewing will evoke a similar response. My paintings are beautifully presented in hand made and hand finished frames. The ‘Sunbury’ Iron Age Hoard

Lists of Iron Age hoards in Great Britain make reference to the ‘Sunbury’ Hoard, but a more accurate description would have been the Shepperton Hoard. The confusion arose when Mr. A.J. Buttress, the Surveyor for the Sunbury Urban District Council, reported the discovery in April 1950 to the old London Museum, who unfortunately recorded the find as being at Sunbury, not Shepperton. The hoard of 317 whole coins and pieces of 56 others, dating from 100-50 BC, was buried in three pottery vessels and became one of the largest hoards of Iron Age coins ever found in Britain. The Staines & Ashford News for Friday, 14th April 1950, reported the find as follows: “Rainbow Corner” Treasure Find – Council Workmen find Hoard of Coins Two Council workmen digging “two spits deep” on the piece of ground used as a nursery for plants at “Rainbow Corner”, Acacia Avenue estate, on Wednesday [12th April], turned up a vase containing more than 200 copper and bronze coins. The site of the “treasure” was on the corner of Jessiman Terrace where the link road joins Acacia Avenue to the estate. They broke the vase, which was less than 2 ft. below the ground. Mr. A.J. Buttress, the Council’s Surveyor, has taken charge of the matter over which enquiries will have to be made. The coins are about the size of sixpences and believed to be earlier than Roman times. They have no legible markings. Mr. Buttress thinks they are not Roman. Other opinions at the Council Offices include “They might be valueless”.

Following a Coroner’s inquest on the find, the coins proved not to be treasure trove and they were handed back to the Council. The ‘heads’ and ‘tails’ of the coins represent a stylised human head, originally the god Apollo, and a butting bull. They are made of Potin, an alloy of copper, tin and lead, which makes them amenable to casting rather than struck from dies. The use of moulds enabled several coins to be cast at the same time before separation into individual coins. The Shepperton find remains the most westerly hoard so far discovered and one of the only two hoards preserved intact.

Following advice from the London Museum, the Council decided that the hoard should remain on permanent loan to the Museum, who eventually provided replicas of six coins and one of the pots in which they were found. These were on display in Shepperton Library for a number of years and can now be seen at the Spelthorne Museum, Staines. Just why the hoard was buried and never retrieved will forever remain a mystery.

Jacqueline’s Community Hub

For many years Jacqueline Stanton had her eye on an empty building in Vicarage Road, Sunbury, seeing its potential as a much needed community hub. The former social services building had been empty for close to 10 years. It stood on land which was part of the old Kenyngton Manor school and which was owned by Surrey County Council. The site had been ear marked for development of a block of flats but locals had protested vehemently against it.

Well finally Jacqueline’s dream has come true and she has been overwhelmed at the support she has had from the local community.

In addition there is a craft room where jewellery su making, beading, knitting and crocheting is ni done by local groups and where you can join

During the first few months of it’s being, it was only safe to operate outside, so the garden centre was the first part of the hub to come into being. Plants were donated by locals. Garden pots and furniture followed.

Finally the official opening of the hub itself followed in September and it is a thriving centre. We went to visit to see what is on offer.

In todays world of reuse and waste not, it is spot on. Items of furniture, bric a brac, books and clothing have been donated by local companies and individuals. Recently rennovated pub the Hare & Hounds donated chairs and has put on fund raising events. The Holiday Inn donated tables when they refurbished.

Plans are afoot for a children’s Christmas grotto which will be held outside. The shop itself has been decked out attractively to suit the season. You can pick up lots of seasonal bargains. So go and take a look.

Spelthorne Business Awards Crowns Winners

It was a night of glitz, glamour and excitement.

Finally, after two years, we were back and celebrating the cream of Spelthorne businesses at the Spelthorne Business Awards.

I know personally how important this event is as a local business, as Village Matters had been crowned both Best Business in Sunbury/ Halliford and Runner Up Best in Spelthorne in 2019. It is a huge accolade to be recognised locally.

There was a change in venue this year. The newly refurbished Holiday Inn hosted the event and it was a chance to show off the significant changes. The refurbishments are stunning. The venue is very much going to be a destination now and I urge you to visit for lunch, dinner or for one of the many events the hotel puts on.

After welcome drinks and photos we were ushered to our tables. A few welcome speeches culminated in a welcome from ‘the manager of the hotel’ who explained that this was his first and last major event as he had to return to his native Italy, but asked if he could give us a farewell song. He proceeded to belt out ‘Nessun Dorma’ to a standing ovation.

This ‘manager’ was pretty good. He continued to sing, rousing the crowd to join in. When two of the waitresses joined in, we realised that this was part of the entertainment. They had us standing up dancing and clapping…..it was only 8pm. This was quite a party already!

Death Notice

Tony Miller was well known to many in Sunbury. He was landlord of the Grey Horse on Green Street for over 20 years and lived in Sunmead Road with his wife Ingrid.

Ingrid and Tony on their wedding day in 1968

Ingrid passed away in early 2019. Tony passed away on 21st October this year after a battle with prostrate cancer. The funeral was held on November 16th. Rest in Peace.

Behind the Scenes at Waterside Wonderland

By Niamh Brennan and Emma Christmas Waterside Wonderland is a brand-new community Christmas event in Shepperton that aims to bring the community together after a difficult year and a half. Alongside the Christmas Market, the festival features affordable family-friendly activities for all ages including Santa’s Grotto, ice-skating on a lakeside synthetic rink, donkey rides, lanterns on the lake, game stalls as well as other festive attractions such as hot food and beverages, outdoor seating and stunning lakeside views.

Our event is running from the 2nd-5th and 9th-12th of December on weekdays at 4-9pm and on weekends 2-9pm. It is located on the New Road site at TW17 0QQ (also the site of Liquid Leisure Shepperton).

The idea for Waterside Wonderland was created by our shared experiences since graduating University as we had both been looking for exciting new opportunities to build our skill sets. We had been inspired by our work environment at Liquid Leisure Shepperton, where creativity and sustainability has been witnessed in the changes to the site seen over the last couple of years. So, we approached our employers about the idea of this community event on the beautiful site and they have supported us throughout the project. Though studying Geography, we have become passionate about supporting both the community and the environment.

We have tried to enhance a real sense of community within our event and what better way to do so than to give exposure to some amazing local small businesses and charities. At our event you will be able to support the friendly faces of Norse-supply Shepperton, Brackenbury Candles, Chiltern Bee, Shepperton Swan Sanctuary shop, Thai-Bite, Little Gem Coffee Co. and plenty more.

We also wanted to do some of our own fundraising and have therefore organised a raffle for the amazing Princess Alice Hospice in Esher. So far, we have been so fortunate to have received some big prizes including those from Shepperton Studios, London Irish and the Flowerpot Hotel in Sunbury and we are still hoping to get some more prizes before the event, so please get in touch if your business would like to support us.

This year we also wanted to factor in a sustainable element inspired by our geography degrees, so we will be using the profits from our Christmas tree sales to replant trees at our lakeside site. Congratulations from the Riverside Arts Centre Congratulations from the Riverside Arts Centre to our very own Kathryn CameronWebb, whose company, The KH Dance Academy won the top award at a ceremony held on the 11th November 2021 at The Holiday Inn for "The Best Healthy Business" in Spelthorne.

Kathryn found our great facility 9 years ago, and seized the opportunity to set up her Dancing School in Lower Sunbury.

Since then KHDA has grown to teaching a wide range of students from 18 months through to older adults in RAD Ballet, ISTD Tap & Modern, Street, Musical Theatre, Fitness and Zumba Gold. KHDA now has a fabulous team of teachers preparing students for exams, dance shows and pantomimes.

There must be something about dance at Riverside because the leader of our ballroom and ballet dance classes Clare Fisher’s company Ballero, was runner up in the best start-up company category. And whilst we are mentioning awards, Riverside Players won various commendations in the recent Spelthorne and Runnymede drama festival, both for their on-stage and on-line entries. Particularly highly commended in several categories was the team involved in “Hold Still” a new play written

by Carrie Millinger. One person who did not receive an award but surely must qualify for a gold medal was Helen Heslop who arranged a “Playathon” which raised around £6000 to help replenish the coffers of Riverside, so drastically affected by the Covid lockdown. Heather organised any number of pianists, violinists, flautists, guitarists and even some child dancers from OnStageNow, of all abilities and ages to be sponsored to perform their musical piece in front of an audience. and Jazz Musicians, Quiz Masters, Actors, Comedians, Magicians, Singers, Dancers, and Impressionists. The audiences were not so large in numbers as we had hoped, but the participants had great fun in getting back on stage after an 18 months break, the watchers saw great entertainment and the newly re-furbished bar did great business.

Oh, it was so good to be back!

Enough about the past; what about the future? Participation in our various groups is, apart from the odd exception back to, and in many cases way beyond, that prior to lockdown as people pick up the threads of their leisure activities. Check our website or our Riverside presents advertisements elsewhere in this edition to see the many pastimes you can pursue at Riverside and make a vow to join one of them in the new terms starting in the New Year. We even have three new possibilities for you which have started pilot classes. Yoga on Tuesday mornings, a sewing class (cotton not seeds) on Wednesday evenings and pottery class for children on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

And if you just want to watch, we have the Youth Theatre’s production of “Twelfth Night” in December followed by a Christmas fun production of song dance and glitter by Zodiac. Naturally there will be the traditional January pantomime from Riverside Players. This year, (or rather next year!) it will be “Old King Cole”. In addition to these there will be regular Jazz concerts, a coffee concert, featuring actress Carole Boyd, plus the monthly comedy club evenings and even a silent disco (no, I don’t know what that is either!) I think it was the News of the World that used to say ‘all human life is here’ - well that certainly applies to Riverside.

At this time of the year we would like to thank the local community for their support over the past 18 months. We hope that this festive season will be a joyous one for you and your families and that the New Year will bring you happiness, prosperity and above all, good health.

Recipe of the Month Last Minute Christmas Gift Cakes Traditionally Christmas cakes are made well in advance but if you haven’t had time try our last-minute version. Because it makes two you can also give one away as a gift, and solve two problems with one recipe!

Makes 2 cakes, each serving 8 Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 1-1¾ hours depending on oven.

Ingredients 600g good-quality mixed dried fruits 150ml whisky, warmed 150g stem ginger, drained, plus 8 tbsp ginger syrup from the jar 200g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 300g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp mixed spice 200g soft light brown sugar 4 large free-range eggs 2 tbsp milk Finely grated zest of 2 small oranges and 2 lemons 50g ground almonds 150g whole glacé cherries

and any whisky, the blitzed ginger and the cherries.

Spoon into the baking tin and level off. Bake for 1-1¾ hours (this depends very much on your oven. My fan oven is super-quick whereas my mother’s aga is slower). If you’re unsure I recommend you check after an hour then every fifteen minutes after that, until the cake is firm and golden brown. To check, insert a skewer into the centre of the cake. On Sunday 14th November at 11.00am, Sunbury came together to remember the fallen.

In dry weather and a change to the normal programme, uniformed groups gathered in Cedars Recreation Ground shortly before the wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial.

The organisers would like to thank all those who contributed to making the day so memorable: the youngsters representing their uniformed groups and their leaders and volunteers; 862 Sunbury Squadron RAF Air Cadets for their support; Sunbury Royal British Legion Branch; St Mary's Choir, Staines Band and Options Technology for the music and PA system; the volunteers

Separately, we raised funds from the community for 13 statues and, with the help of the Neighbourhood Services team, these were located around Sunbury. Thanks to Knights Glass, Lodge Brothers, Crick Heitman Accountants, Rigby Golding Solicitors, Stephen Searle Transport, Jim Gazzard, Spelthorne Sports Club, Tesco, Jacqueline's Garden, U- Drive Cover Ltd and individuals from the community who donated.

Sunbury Health Centre… in conversation Neil Huntingford, Chair Patient Participation Group SHC, in conversation with Richard Fryer, Business Manager SHC. The media and the press are quick to highlight issues with the NHS, especially with regard to patients having difficulty getting access to GP surgeries and yet 9 out of 10 NHS Chief Executives have reported that the health service is under unsustainable pressure, with the worry that the situation will only worsen as we head into winter. Is this situation reflected at Sunbury Health Centre?

It’s very frustrating. We have the right number of clinical practitioners for our patient population but demand has gone through the roof. The pandemic is part of the reason for this rise in demand and it’s easy to think that Covid has gone away, but it hasn’t and we struggle with staff isolating & sickness while trying to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff. Unlike many practices, we have stayed open throughout the pandemic, seeing patients face to face when necessary and progressing our on-line service to help as many patients as possible.

You’ve mentioned on-line services and that’s something that some patients have difficulty accessing and using. How do you respond to that?

On-line systems are complex to develop and operate and we are lucky that in North West Surrey, all practices are using one system, Footfall, which is centrally supported. It’s a steep learning curve for our staff, but as time moves on it will allow us to deal with more patients, getting them the right support from the right clinician.

How does that help those patients who don’t have on-line access?

Our phone lines open from 8a.m. – 6p.m. The aim is to help patients who contact us by telephone and enter their requests into the on-line system so that all enquiries, by whatever method, are triaged in the same way.

Halliford’s Woodward Building Officially Open We attended the official opening of the new Woodward Building at Halliford School last month. What a fabulous addition this is. From start to finish the three storey building went up in 21 weeks. The design is modular, chosen to be the fastest build with the least impact on locals.

Named after school Chair of Governors, Ken Woodward, the building houses the new library and study space as well as classrooms for English and History. It is bright, airy and full of technology to support student learning.

The building is also designed to be sustainable and carbon neutral in only 8 years. The roof Headmaster James Davies with Ken Woodward space has been covered in solar panels.

James Davies, Headmaster at Halliford School, said, “The Woodward Building offers state-ofthe-art modern facilities for our students and provides exciting, stimulating spaces for them to work both independently and collaboratively with our new Learning Resource Centre at the heart of the school site. Our students will be able to learn more about this technology with the interactive display in the building showing our energy production and consumption”.

Fruit & Nut Bark –

a great gift to make for Christmas

Ingredients 75g cup walnuts 450g good white chocolate, finely chopped 75g dried cranberries 75g medium-diced dried apricot Directions

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.

Place the walnuts in one layer on another sheet pan and bake for 8 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Place three quarters of the white chocolate in a heat-proof glass bowl and put it in the microwave on high for 30 seconds.

Stir the chocolate with a rubber spatula, return it to the microwave for

another 30 seconds, then stir again. Continue to heat and stir in 30-second intervals until the chocolate is just melted.

Immediately stir in the remaining chocolate and allow it to sit at room temperature, stirring often, until it's completely smooth. (If you need to

Pour the melted chocolate onto the parchment paper and spread it lightly make a rectangle.

If only we could input letters, emails, texts and voice mails to a box and it warned us by a flashing red LED if a scam detected.

But in its absence we must be even more on guard against scammers this festive buying time.

We’d like to believe in an incredibly low priced bargain for a present and maybe it’s worth the risk to send our money to get. But we really know, don’t we, that …..…..
