Roy Urquhart - From Shepperton to Arnhem

The recent commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the airborne landings at Arnhem during World War Two reminded me that the man who led the operation on the ground came from Shepperton.

Robert Elliot Urquhart, usually known as Roy, was born on 28th November 1901 at Aberfeldy , Green Lane, Shepperton. His father was Dr. Alexander Urquhart, Medical Officer for Health to the old Sunbury Urban District Council.

Roy attended the private Avon House School in nearby Station Approach, a small establishment of only eight pupils run by Miss Alice Blouet. He later went on to St. Paul s School at Hammersmith before going to Sandhurst.

His first commission took him to India. On the long voyage out, he met Pamela Condon, whom he subsequently married in March 1939. They were to have four children, Elspeth, Judy, Adam and Susan. (Elspeth is married to Lord (Menzies) Campbell, the former Liberal Democrat leader).

served in the Middle East from El Alamein to Tunis and on into Sicily and Italy. Roy was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in September 1943, and a bar to the decoration (i.e. winning it a second time) a month later.

Returning to this country, he was promoted to Major-General and given command of the First Airborne Division, known as the Red Devils because of their distinctive red berets.

The story of the Arnhem operation is well known, the airborne troops being dropped too far away from the target bridge, widely scattered, and to cap it all, on top of two elite German Panzer (Armoured) Divisions which were resting in the area. The British troops had been assured that the opposition consisted of boys and old men on bicycles ! As the radios did not work properly, Roy set out to make contact with his men, but became trapped in an attic in the town, with German troops stationed outside. Heavily out-gunned, and with the ground forces which were due to relieve them days overdue, the remnants of First Airborne were ordered to withdraw over the Rhine under cover of darkness. Of the 8,000 men who were dropped, barely 1,800 made it back to the Allied Lines, the rest killed, wounded or captured. Urquhart was made a Commander of the Order of the Bath for his leadership in the battle.

After more service post-war, notably in Malaya, he retired from the Army and went into business. Roy Urquhart died on 13th December 1988.

In the feature film made about Arnhem, A Bridge Too Far (1977), the role of Roy Urquhart was played by Sean Connery.

The Aviation Industry in Surrey in the Great War by David Hassard is the subject of the next meeting of the Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society. The meeting takes place on Tuesday 19th November at Halliford School in Russell Road, starting at 8pm. All welcome, admission ÂŁ2 for non-members.

Shepperton Triumphs. Village Matters also a Winner!

Shepperton Studios glamorous Orangery was full to bursting at the black tie dinner for the second Spelthorne Means Business Awards. 12 categories celebrated all sorts of businesses large and small across the borough. It is a great initiative to support business in the current challenging climate.

Being shortlisted is an achievement in itself. Guest speaker was the inspirational Julianne Ponan from Creative Nature who had triumphed over a life threatening condition, braved Dragons Den on TV, been rejected, made some mistakes along the way and then gone on to amazing things. She has more awards than you can shake a stick at but she humbly says they mean nothing compared to the achievement of building a brand, being positive Who s that girl? Left, Monica Chard and on the left, in what she does and being surrounded by a (do you recognise her?), Kerry Hennessey! fantastic team. Therein was a message for all the businesses in the orangery at the awards.

But awards were the order of the night and we were this innovative business, constantly reinventing all eager to hear how we had fared. The results of itself, constantly looking for new ideas to reduce the 12 winners as follows: waste and improve our planet won the trophy.

What an accolade and an inspiration for us all.

Recycle and Raise Funds for Saxon School

By Monica Chard, Editor I remember seeing a huge poster advertising litter awareness when I was young, with hundreds of speech bubbles stating My little sweet wrapper won t make any difference . The point is, if everyone thought that way, then we would all be under heaps of litter. The same mentality goes for the differences we can all make to the future of our planet. If we all do our little bit then we really CAN make a difference. But what are those changes?

So, let s talk recycling. We have got used to being able to recycle all sorts of things but there is a lot of confusion as to what can and cant be recycled. Reports state that we will run out of landfill sites within a decade so we all have to do more.

Terracycle is a forward thinking company which is finding a way of recycling things that normally cant be recycled such as crisp bags, plastic biscuit / cracker wrappers, cleaning wipe packets, plastic air fresheners, toothpaste tubes , toothbrushes and dishwasher / laundry pouches and the range is growing all the time. Once recycled they are made into items such as park benches/ childrens playgrounds / watering cans and tables. We were contacted recently by Fiona Povey who lives in Shepperton and who is passionate about recycling.

She has put in place an initiative within Saxon Primary School to collect these items, get them recycled by Terracycle and raise much needed Please mention Shepperton Matters when responding to adverts

money for the school at the same time. It is a win/win situation - parents at the school have been able to raise money for their school without the need to reach into their pockets.

Quality Fruit in the high street, recently recognised for Corporate Social Responsibility at the Spelthorne Means Business awards, are a dropping off point for crisp bags and now also collect all the other items for Saxon School. Currently the school is sending off 2 - 3 bin bags of crisp bags every fortnight but feel that with public support there is the potential to save far more than this from ending up in landfill sites. As a company worldwide Terracycle have donated more that $44 million to charities through this scheme. Not bad for a load of old rubbish that would normally end up in the bin. Keep an eye out at Quality Fruit and you will soon get into the habit of bringing in your empties as part of your weekly shopping. Just like taking carrier bags to the supermarkets with you, we dont think twice about it now, it had just become automatic. Local schools are all looking for initiatives too and if there is a chance to make money from it, all the better for all.

Mr C s favourite dish is Chicken Tikka Masala. I have to confess that although this is not my choice, the way the dish is cooked at Ivory Tusk is really excellent with a beautiful smokiness of the barbequed meat coming through. But as we were sampling new dishes, Musa suggested the Murgh Karkoli which is a medium spiced dish, one up from the Chicken Tikka Masala. The chicken was wonderfully moist and the flavours fresh and punchy. We most definitely approved. The peshwari naan, straight out of the Tandoor, was perfect for dipping into the rich sauce.

Deciding that we really must be very hungry, Musa also brought us a dish of Chicken Tikka Masala so we could compare the dishes side by side. I was most definitely not hungry at this point, but the sauce of the CTM rocks and I did indeed enjoy it. The dish still has my vote!

These days there is a need to cater for people with allergies. Anyone who has an allergy needs to alert staff on arrival and will be looked after. In addition any of the dishes on the menu can be adapted to suit vegetarians. If there is something you particularly like, chef will also be happy to create it for you.

You can be certain of a great welcome, well prepared food and some original dishes at this local favourite.

Shepperton Running Group

Getting the Community Running Since 2014

One dedicated individual has been behind a running surge in the area.

Having moved to Shepperton in November 2014, Steve Barrington was keen to join a local running group.

Finding that there wasn t one, he set up the Shepperton Running Group. He got partner Andrea to help him set up a Facebook group page and they advertised the new group in local shops.

Well, they have (literally) come a long way in five years.

The group now has over 70 regular runners with ages ranging from only 4 years old to a magnificent 65 (please note that under 16s must be accompanied by a parent).

Many friendship groups have been forged over the years and whole families have got involved in running. Since joining Shepperton Running Group 21 runners have completed their first marathons, which is an incredible achievement.

The team has also been very much behind the Couch to 5K movement, having organised six groups in Shepperton, at Bedfont Lakes and the Hazelwood Centre for beginners. This was initially aimed at the over 50s through Surrey County Council, but the initiative has continued and expanded now to cater for all ages Three of the groups members started the Hazelwood parkrun in March 2018 and there is a strong presence of purple T shirts at the runs every week. Many runners also volunteer at the runs, an essential way of keeping these free events going. It was the 15th anniversary of parkrun last month, which is said to be the world s biggest physical activity movement at the moment.

Monday (3-5 miles) and Thursday night (3-8 miles) at 7.30pm all year round. Another attraction of a running group is that you are joining a like minded bunch of individuals to motivate each other and enjoy a communal effort. It is worth noting too that there are many women who get involved in Shepperton Running Group so that they don t have to run alone in the dark, especially in the winter months.

Runners find the sport hugely motivating and Shepperton Running Group are keen to reward and recognise successes. At the end of November they are holding a glitzy Award s Dinner at the Hazelwood centre.

The growth of this group has been recognised as significant to our community. Steve Barrington himself won the Volunteer of the Year award 2016 at the Spelthorne Sports Council Awards. In 2020 he will complete his 30th marathon. What drive!

Talented Thamesmead Student at Opera 12 year old Victoria (Vika) Nekhaenko, a fantastic vocalist, who attends Thamesmead School, recently performed a solo piece at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

She was also part of the ensemble for their production of the opera Werther (seen above left), alongside a world class cast including the highly regarded bass Alastair Miles and Juan Diego Florez. Staff from Thamesmead attended the performance which was outstanding. It was a wonderful opportunity for Vika who did brilliantly.

Brigitte Trust to bag share of Tesco s Community Fund

The Brigitte Trust needs your help. To celebrate Tesco s Centenary, the supermarket is offering a special voting round of its community funding scheme which will see grants of £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000 awarded to community projects. 3 groups in each Tesco region have been shortlisted and The Brigitte Trust are one of them. Volunteers from the BT support those diagnosed with cancer, visiting them at home and helping them live the best life they can through their illness. Cutting it at Shepperton Studios

We have previously had a behind the scenes look at various aspects of Shepperton Studios: CGI, wig making, props to name a few. So when we had the chance to find out more about costumes we were very excited.

Ian Frazer-Wallace (pictured), currently living in Sunbury on Thames grabbed a cuppa with me to tell me about his role in the costumes. He has been working almost non stop on a succession of films at the studios. Films include Mary Poppins Returns and The Favourite and most recently on Cruella staring Emma Stone. All these films feature stunning costumes created by an immensely dedicated team of creatives.

It starts with the costume designer. Ian has worked with numerous over the years and they all have their particular ways of working.

Sandy Powell for example, is an multi-award winning costume designer who likes to push the envelope. She needs to know she can rely on her team of talented cutters to accurately bring her vision to life in minute detail. That is where Ian comes in.

Ian has always had a love of creating.

He started his career in fashion, designing for a range of fashion companies from evening wear to extreme clubwear. He had a love of corsetry and was fortunate to be mentored by a leading metal couturier and corsetiere, Manuel Albarran.

But Ian settled into a long term career at Selfridges heading up a large team of master tailors and seamstresses. An eye to detail and a flair for managing many different types of people saw his career flourish. His time at Selfridges gave him a great insight in couture and its construction. But ultimately Fashion does not offer the same advantages that Costume presents and Ian was lucky to get the chance to work on the film Maleficent.

spring board into costume and he has never looked back.

His passion for craftsmanship has been a driving force in his career. There is nothing Ian can t make and he has passed on some of his knowledge teaching an MA course in Clothing Construction at Kingston Uni. His creativity has taken him to the world of pop, glamour, celebrity and fantasy.

He tells me he wakes up every morning excited about the day ahead. How many of us feel that way about our job?

Working on costumes in the film industry demands more than the ability to cut and sew.

You need to be able to understand and please multiple clients ; the film director and the costume designer not to mention the actors. In a job that is extremely demanding you need to be calm under pressure, not mind working very long hours when it is needed and remain patient at all times. Not delivering is not an option and the teams that work together need to embrace that concept. But every day is different. Every film has its own challenges and finding solutions is part of the thrill. The budget for The Favourite was not huge. The costumes had to look fabulous, but not cost the earth. Sandy Powell hit on the idea of using African headdress fabric from Brixton market and Ian and team then created amazing costumes from it. Sandy was so pleased with it that she had her own outfit for the BAFTA s made from the same fabric.

Unlike the fashion business, the career path in costume is clear and not exploitative. Start as a trainee and you will already earn a decent wage. Prove yourself and you will be in demand and rise through the ranks. Look out for trainee vacancies. Or approach the costume supervisor or cutters. Passion is everything. If you want it, find a way of making it happen.

Next Stage of Consultation on the New Local Plan

Remember, remember, the fifth of November because the next stage of consultation on the new Local Plan starts at 12 noon!

The consultation will run from Tuesday 5 November 2019 to Tuesday 7 January 2020 and there will be a number of public events to provide further information. Spelthorne must plan for 603 new homes per year over a 15year period as part of the Government's aim to see more housing built.

The first consultation on the Local Plan took place in May and June last year and asked the public to consider options for how Spelthorne will meet its need for housing, gypsy and traveller pitches, employment sites and other uses.

The next stage will be to set out draft policies for the new plan and proposed sites across the borough to be allocated for development. The selection of sites follows the preferred strategy, to maximise building on land in urban areas such as town centres, particularly Staines upon Thames, and to consider releasing some 'weakly performing' Green Belt for development. This will enable the protection of the borough's most important green spaces.

If we do not have a viable Local Plan it is much more difficult to control future developments.

Feedback from the consultation will be analysed and fed into the final version of the Local Plan, which will also be consulted on in summer 2020 before it is submitted for examination by an independent inspector. The inspector will recommend whether the Plan can be adopted but the final decision will rest with the Council.

The Council s Bulletin magazine, which is distributed to all households in the borough the first week of December, will be a bumper edition with eight pages of Local Plan news.

A series of press releases will be produced covering the key aspects of our Local Plan to keep people informed. Social media will be updated regularly. Copies of the consultation documents will be available at Shepperton Please mention Shepperton Matters when responding to adverts

Thamesmead Festival of Football

On Friday 25th October Thamesmead School held a Max s Festival of Football in memory of Max Lovell, a former year 8 student who very sadly passed away from cancer in January.

The school decided to dedicate the fundraising from the day to Shooting Star Children s Hospice and Momentum Children s charity.

The day included a 5-a-side football tournament for each year group, with matches being refereed by coaches from the Chelsea FC Foundation (Max s favourite team).

Team Max s Boys with dad in centre Following that there was an exhibition match of Max s Friends vs Thamesmead Staff followed by the unveiling of a memorial bench and tree on the field, which was attended by Max s parents.

The day was a football themed Mufti-day for everyone. Students donated money in exchange for wearing a football shirt, something blue/white (Chelsea colours) or other sports related clothing. There was also have a sports themed raffle with various sporting prizes up for grabs, donated by many local sports clubs and organisations. VOLUNTEER SHEPPERTON Sadly, many of us have been touched by cancer, MND or other lifethreatening illness - perhaps a family member, friend or work colleague and the news can be devastating.

Brigitte Trust volunteers visit weekly, offering a free service of emotional and practical support and the chance to share some of the feelings and concerns serious illness brings. After training volunteers, who should be car drivers, are asked to commit four hours each week to local visits.

Christmas Day at the Greeno Centre The Greeno Centre in Shepperton will once again be hosting a Free Community Christmas Day Lunch. Do you want to do something different for Christmas?

Would you like to spend the day in a community atmosphere? We welcome anyone, whatever your circumstances, old or young, on your own or with others, carers are especially welcome. Our aim is to join as a community to enjoy a sit down Christmas Day lunch and get to know each other. A fully packed programme is enjoyed from around 10.30 am until mid afternoon, with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee, followed by carol singing, games, quizzes etc and of course, a traditional Christmas Turkey Luncheon.

With no family living nearby, Christmas was threatening to be just a little empty. I had heard about the fabulous community lunch Your editor as you have not at the Greeno seen her before!

Centre and thought we could offer to help out so signed up for whatever we could do to help.

We were invited to pick up guests and drive them to the event, stay there for the day and mingle with guests, help serve the meal and clear plates then take the happy guests home again.

Suitably attired in festive gear, Mr C made the day for a couple of local gentlemen by chauffeuring them in his convertible car. (My poor passengers had to make do with a more humble vehicle!)

Spending the day in the company of others, many who would otherwise have been alone, was truly humbling. The volunteers were a fabulous and warm group of people and it honestly goes down as one of the best Christmas days we have spent.

Fancy Owning a Racehorse?

A friend of mine owns one lower leg of a racehorse. She would never be able to afford a whole one, but as an experienced rider, the thrill of being able to watch a horse that she part owns being raced, is a dream come true.

We found out that Shepperton has its own horse syndicate and they are currently looking for new members.

BA Racing has been running for well over ten years. It is a group of about 10 people, some of whom are former British Airways staff (hence the name). It is managed from Shepperton, although its members live both around this area and further afield. BA Racing has owned horses trained by the likes of Andrew Balding, Hughie Morrison and most recently Clive Cox - all of whom are renowned for their excellence in the game. The syndicate has a very good reputation on the racing circuit and are a sociable bunch, not involved in racing purely as a means of winning or making profit. Members enjoy mornings visiting the horses at their stables as much as they enjoy watching them race.

There are currently a couple of vacancies within the syndicate so the team is recruiting new members. The cost of owning a racehorse is substantial, but when divided among a number of individuals it is not as expensive as you would think. Unlike the larger racing clubs, for your investment in BA Racing you would receive a percentage share in a real racehorse, with all the benefits attached to this (stable visits, complimentary entry to racecourses and access to their owners' facilities, regular communications etc).

BA Racing is run on a democratic basis in that big decisions are made democratically by seeking a consensus among members.

Presentations and prizes are available to all members and not just to the syndicate manager. Unlike the vast majority of other syndicates, BA Racing does not charge its members any management fees - all of the administration is done voluntarily, therefore all of your Please mention Shepperton Matters when responding to adverts

investment would go directly towards the welfare and racing of your horse.

The current horse is a five-year-old sprinter named Grey Galleon, as the name suggests he is a beautiful grey horse, one that runs well and has considerable potential off his current handicap mark. He races on a regular basis, with a preference for Kempton Park. He has won twice and been placed on a few occasions. The aim is to race him throughout this winter, almost certainly at Kempton.

Recipe of the Month Butternut Biryani

The Community Café @Riverhousebarn in Walton on Thames continues with recipes showing how you can use leftovers.

They create wonderful food from surplus, donated by a local supermarket. Go and try their surplus lunch for £5 and they will donate the proceeds to local charities feeding those on low incomes and who are struggling.

This is a fabulous recipe that is easy to make and can be adapted with any seasonal vegetables – courgettes or any squash will work well, as does the addition of wilted rainbow chard or spinach. Top with a dollop of yoghurt or soured cream & coriander.

Serves 2

1 onion - sliced 1 tbsp rapeseed/sunflower oil 2 garlic cloves - crushed I tbsp chopped fresh ginger 1tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp ground coriander Pinch chilli flakes Half a diced butternut squash, 1 vegetable stock cube 85 g basmati rice Salt/pepper Heat the oil in a non-stick pan, and cook the onions, garlic and ginger gently for 10 mins until they soften.

Add the rice and squash and stir for 2 mins. Add the cumin, coriander, stock cube and 750 ml water. Cover pan with lid and simmer for 20 mins until rice is tender.

Tickets for Themba s Cinderella Themba Theatre, an amateur children's theatre group which rehearses in Shepperton is putting on their Christmas Panto, Cinderella at Chertsey Hall on Friday 6th December at 7pm and Saturday 7th December at 11am.

The cast are aged between 8 and 14 and all go to local schools. This is the premiere of this version of Cinderella, written by Themba Theatre's director, Natalie Wells.

Walking Netball may not be a sport familiar to most, but it is just one of the varied and interesting activities that are part of the programme for members of Spelthorne Women s Institute.

Alongside talks, book clubs and choirs, it takes its place as one of the many clubs run by the WI groups within Spelthorne WI and as such is proving very popular.

Last month members of the ten local groups held their annual meeting, this year hosted by Bedfont Belles WI and held at St Hilda s Church hall, Ashford. However, while new clubs and adventures have been very much a part of this year s activities, members still started their meeting with a traditional and rousing rendition of Jerusalem.

It was a particularly special moment for Stanwell WI, which celebrated its centenary this year, alongside Middlesex Federation WIs Hillingdon and West Drayton.

Members on behalf of Sunbury-on-Thames WI and Greenefielde WI described some of the many trips and activities that have been enjoyed during the year, including visits to Royal Holloway College and Denbies Vineyard.

Actor Jonathon Fryer provided the evening s entertainment regaling members with stories of his time in repertoire and the various actors he met along the way.

After refreshments provided by Halliford WI – always a very important part of any meeting - Mr Fryer took on the daunting job of judging the traditional craft competition, this year organised by Laleham WI on the theme of bees.

A London Marathon Run for Manor Mead School Shepperton Shepperton Rotary Aurora helped to sponsor Fran Kenden on her Marathon Run this year in London. Fran has run over 23 London Marathons and in this year was happy to compete for the Rotary club to raise funds for the Manor Mead School in Shepperton.

The run was in wonderful sunlight and was as usual a very happy, emotional and remarkable day. Fran manage to run in under 4 hours - a great achievement.

On the 11th October Fran with Ron Enticott, the Rotary President Elect, went along to the school to present a cheque to Mark Bryant (Executive Head) and Tracey Penman (Head of School) and some of the children ..

The money raised by Fran was ÂŁ943.

This money will be used to create a Sensory Garden where the children will be able explore and learn in very creative ways. The school were delighted with Fran s efforts and how much they will be able to achieve with the money raised.

Ted s Talk

A few weeks ago, I was at Kempton Antiques Market and I stumbled across a small booklet about the Southern Railway Home Guard. The book is a tribute to the 35,000 Southern Railwaymen who, while carrying on their normal and often abnormal duties during World War 2, enrolled as members of Southern Railway Home Guard to protect the railway against attack from the enemy. The Southern Railway Home Guard, although part of the National Home Guard, was a distinct railway organisation authorized by the War Office. Though separate from the general service units of the Home Guard, the Southern Railway units were affiliated according to locality to the appropriate County Regiments.

By 1940, things were going very badly for the Allies and, with invasion a possibility, the Secretary of State for War, the Rt. Hon Anthony Eden, made an appeal for volunteers to defend the Homeland. Southern Railwaymen of all To advertise call Monica on 07979 808991

grades, barred from active service, enthusiastically offered their services. Enrollment forms were distributed and in less than a week the force totalled 18,000!

This number remained practically constant throughout the war, the figure of 35,000 first mentioned being caused by the comings and goings into active service and retirement. The Southern system was divided up into six sections and six battalion commanders were appointed.

Initially, it was known as "Local Defence Volunteers". It became the Home Guard soon after and military ranks were used.

To finish off, I must mention the efforts of the women assisting the Home Guard. They were officially recognised by the War Office in 1943 and, having nomination by Commanding Officers, such women were issued with a plastic badge which can just be seen in the photograph.

Sustainable Fashion Don t Bin it. Swap it!

Personally I could never contemplate putting any of my clothes in the bin, but it seems that many people do.

Here are a few reasons why you can put them to better use and keep them out of landfill.

• You can sell them (Ebay, Market place, Gum tree etc) • You can donate them to charity so they can be put to raising much needed funds • Charity shops will even take clothes not good for reusing and will sell as fabric for recycling • Or how about swapping them?

I went to a clothes swap event recently put on by the Environment Trust ( https:// www.environmenttrust.org ) and what a genius idea it is. Before I talk about that, just a reminder about the effects fashion has on the planet.

Because we are such a throw away society, fashion is the second most polluting thing (after oil). 25% of global chemicals are used in textile production (including pesticides and dyes). Vast amount of precious water is used in clothes production . Cotton for one T shirt takes apparently the equivalent amount of drinking water for a human being for a year!

85% of textiles are sent to landfill*. Imagine that! Clothes can take up to 40 years to decompose. In addition, they can contaminate

land with chemicals as they break down.

Shoes can take up to 1000 years to break down.

And imagine the poor wages paid to a worker if you have paid only a few pounds for a garment. The costs of production, import, taxes and marketing of cheap clothes leave little for wages, Worth thinking about!

We used to owe fewer items of clothing, which had been made to last but have been persuaded to keep investing in the latest trends. Maybe we could do with going back to old ways . Mend and reuse. Buy to last.

The idea of clothes swap is brilliant. You select a handful of items you no longer want, but which are perfectly OK and someone else would want, donate them and select the same number of items to take home. One downside is that you don t declutter, but you do refresh.

A modest event entrance fee is donated to charity and it is a fun way of spending an hour. I am talking already to a charity to see if we can get something going locally. The Environment Trust do clothes swaps annually and you can sign up to their alerts.

Or of course give your clothes to charity.

Even if they are not usable the fabric can be sold in bulk for scrap and recycled. *Source Environment Trust

The Meaning of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is the annual public holiday celebrated by North Americans on the fourth Thursday of November, and by Canadians on the second Monday in October. It celebrates the Pilgrims first harvest, and is a day to spend with loved ones and for giving thanks. The tradition has been observed nationally since 1863.

The history of this festival, began in England, which was a Roman Catholic nation until 1534, when King Henry V111 declared a new national church, The Church of England . Some people felt that this new denomination retained too many practices of the Roman Church, and they wanted a simpler faith and to purify the church. They became known as Puritans. Another group called Separatists, wanted the creation of separate church congregations.

Both groups being generically known as Pilgrims.

In England in the 1600 s it was illega l to be part of any church other than the Church of England. Some Pilgrims decided for religious freedom, to move to Leiden in Holland where they stayed for eleven years, but fearing they would lose their English identity they moved again this time to start a new life in America. In 1620 a group of about one hundred, sailed on the ship the Mayflower and settled on what is now Cape Cod, Massachusetts, naming the new town Plymouth after their port of departure.

The tradition of celebrating after a successful harvest began in England and Europe. The first Thanksgiving in America was in 1621, and to those of strong Christian faith, this was not merely a celebration, it was also a joyous outpouring of gratitude. Today s national custom of rejoicing, is based on ancient English harvest festivals, and the Puritan Thanksgiving; a solemn religious observance combining prayer and feasting.

The most widely practised ritual for this event is the meal, consisting of among other foods, turkey, sweet potatoes, corn, pumpkin pie, chowder, cranberry sauce, stuffing, pecan pie.

Many people will attend church services, getting together with family and friends, watching American football, or observing the holiday through charity work. Many cities hold large festivals or parades.

Although the USA and Canada are the most familiar countries to celebrate Thanksgiving, there are a few other nations that give thanks for a successful harvest. Germany celebrates in October, and the Netherlands observes a Thanksgiving Day service to honour the Pilgrims that had lived in Leiden.Harvest Festival is held in the UK towards the end of September or early October, and is the closest thing we have to a day of thanksgiving.

Churches here are decorated with baskets of fruit, and school pupils often bring food from home to a Harvest Festival service. Afterwards the food is generally given to people in need.

This year the USA will celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday the 28th November.

John F Kennedy said about this national holiday: As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them .

Gardening Matters Pots of Cabbage

November can be a bit of a grey, miserable month. My kids would call it meh . I like to inject some colour with winter bedding plants. A cheerful pot by the front door can make you smile on the gloomiest morning.

Obviously, the choice of plants for winter is not as large as during the summer months but there are enough varieties around to make very attractive combinations for pots. My favourite plant for winter pots has to be the ornamental cabbage. These robust beauties come in wonderful colours including cream, pink and purple – with either attractive frilly or very spiky leaves. They pair beautifully with winterflowering pansies and hardy cyclamen.

Try planting three pots of different sizes using a colour scheme which co-ordinates with the cabbages. Plant a 50cm / 20inch pot with four large ornamental frilly cabbages surrounding a central spiky one, to give some height to the display. Then choose a smaller pot (38cm / 15inches) and plant one frilly ornamental cabbage surrounded by pink and purple winterflowering pansies. Finally plant a small pot (25cm / 10inches) with a mixture of hardy cyclamen and white pansies. The resulting display will give you pleasure through November, December and January.

Tips Select a frost proof container because these pots need to withstand wintery conditions.

The most dependable pots are made of fibreglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, or stone. Most terracotta will crack in cold temperatures, but some glazed varieties are frost-proof.

Make sure you place plenty of drainage material in the bottom of the pots.

A good compost will contain enough slow release fertiliser to maintain the plants for several weeks during autumn and winter. If they still going strong as winter turns to you can give them a bit of a feed, but by February or March you will want to think about replanting your pots with spring bedding.

Think about gravel – I like to use a layer of gravel over the soil of my winter pots for several reasons. It gives the planted pots an attractive finish, keeps rain from splashing back on to the plants, provides some insulation for the soil and reflects light and warmth in any winter sun thus creating a little microclimate in which the plants will be happier.

Water them! The plants will need moisture around their roots so water as needed unless the soil in the container is frozen. Do not water frozen pots because the plants are unable to absorb the water.

Use a good general-purpose compost. There are mixes specifically made for use in containers, which provide the essential drainage that plants living in pots need.

Purple Angels Very Busy Month!

Purple Angels who are also known as Spelthorne Dementia Support have had a really busy time over the last month.

A musical day trip took a coach full of members and carers to Syon Park for lunch followed by a visit The Musical Museum near Kew for a tour of four centuries of early musical instruments ..self playing violins/pianos /organs and many interesting types of music taking us to present day.

A demonstration of the very same Wurlitzer organ that once played in our local Regal Cinema Kingston -on-Thames. This is a must place to visit for music lovers of all age groups. We followed up with afternoon tea.

A few days later, we joined Friendly Dementia Shepperton who held a fund raising walk to take part in showing awareness for Alzheimer s Memory walk. A rather wet event, but umbrellas to the rescue!

The very next day we held a concert at the Jubilee Church where we supported #BBCMusicDay#dementia with Nile Rogers being our Ambassador with an evening of various types of music ranging from Elmbridge Ladies Choir, Everly Others, Whitney G Jones Duo, Beth Sherburn singing country, Margaret Watson on Harp, Terry Gleed Panto and Pop and Geoff Dianzo (shadows tribute) and Stephanie Drake Soprano. Oh what a night that was!

Purple Angels followed this event only days later by presenting Elvis is in the Building where local Johnny Quattro had The Greeno members up and dancing to all of the Shaking, Rocking n Rolling hits. This was attended by 95 local residents who enjoyed a roast lunch afterwards.

To top this a successful 70 s Disco fund raiser and raffle was held the following week again enjoyed by so many.

Purple Angels meet at The Greeno every two weeks, their next meeting is Monday 11th November. Do come and say hello.

The buddies are still working hard and volunteering locally, but many more are needed .

There are so many lonely people in the local community who would treasure an hours visit and a chat. Could you help?

In 2003, Winton was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to humanity. On 28 October 2014, he was awarded the highest honour of the Czech Republic, the Order of the White Lion (1st class), by Czech President Miloš Zeman. He died in 2015 at the age of 106.
