Charlton Village is threatened with losing a lot of green belt. Even the leader of the council Ian Harvey has told the government the figure Spelthorne is expected to build is too high. Please be appraised.

The War of the Worlds

By Nick Pollard With the new BBC adaption of the War of the World s by H.G. Wells being released, I thought it would be interesting to look at the local places mentioned in the original novel, first published in 1898. To summarise, the Martians invade earth by means of cylinders fired by a giant gun from their planet, the first of which lands at Horsell Common, near to where H.G. Wells was living in Woking. The Martians unleash giant tripod war machines from these cylinders, armed at first with a heat ray, but later with even deadlier poison gas (a foreshadowing of the use of gas in warfare in The Martian felled by artillery at Shepperton the First World War).

Brian Holt - Shepperton Will Miss You

Shepperton has lost a good community member. Brian Holt who died in late September was part of the very fabric of Shepperton.

Of course he was the village baker, a position he took over from his father.

But he was also known for his unstinting service. Brian had served on the Shepperton Village Fair committee, been a long term Rotarian, read for the blind and was a driver for Care in Shepperton. He loved his classic cars, restoring them himself and showing them at the Shepperton Fair as well as taking part in historic rallies. He was a member of Desborough Sailing Club and he skippered and crewed the Impossible Dream.

Impossible Dream is a boat adapted for the disabled. Volunteer skippers operate all year round, conditions permitting and provide short boat trips to groups from special need schools, care homes and clubs.

Brian heard about Impossible Dream from his good friend Derek Beake who is also a volunteer skipper. Brian had the boating experience himself as well as a great desire to do some good for others so joined up. He played a full and popular part in the boat until his health forced him to slow down.

From July 2007 Brian Holt drove for Care in Shepperton. Marilyn Bulford refers to him as a legend . In her words; He was one of those volunteer drivers who always did his utmost to help elderly or sick people in Shepperton. He was a duty driver one day a month, and often helped up to four clients to medical appointments on his duty day. Also if they needed to get to the post office or a particular shop, he would try to help if he had the time between appointments. and they were thrilled to get 'the boss' taking them to the doctors' or hospital appointments, and he was so pleased to help them.

The eulogy at Brian s funeral, read by Brian s grand daughter, Maddy, spoke lovingly of the memories the family has of this special man.

She spoke of the grandchildren s earliest memories which included the smell of freshly baked bread, but then also of course memories of their granddad who took them on boat trips, spoiled them with biscuits from the cookie jar and who presented them with a big pink pig made of meringue from the bakery.

The eulogy talks of a man who could not sit still, always busy with projects and helping others. Beach holidays were not the norm for the family. It was all about adventure.

Simon, Becky, left or right? Brian would ask his children on their road trips round Europe. Inevitably the getting lost was the fun, even if it meant having the wrong currency!

Brian had a knack of talking to anyone and accepted an invitation to stay with a complete stranger I Norway who had met on a ferry.

That sums Brian up. A people person. Maddy ends her eulogy with the words above all you were the best dad, grand dad, great grand dad abd brother anyone could have ever wished for.

Rest in peace Brian. You have left your mark on the world.

Big Tree Night -

December 11th Shepperton High Street

BIG TREE NIGHT is happening on Wednesday December 11th 2019 from 5.00pm onwards.

It is – along with the Village Fair in June – the main community event on Shepperton s calendar As always, the Big Tree Night Committee and helpers have been working hard behind the scenes to make Big Tree Night a night to remember. They would like to thank all the generous sponsors who make this event happen.

It s Christmas !...so there will be lots of carol singing around the Big Tree from our local schools – as well as some exciting dance routines from local groups.

Of course Santa – and his reindeer – will be trotting down the High Street around 6.20 p.m. and they will be parked and available all night long at the Village Hall.

The High Street will be once again lined with stalls. Charities and local community groups are represented.

There will also be a range of gift and craft stalls from local suppliers and, of course, as befitting a cold wintry event, there are a great variety of food stalls from churros to burgers, sausages to pancakes and more !

There is mulled wine & mince pies - at various stalls - to ensure everyone has a really good time.

The Village hall will be open on the Big Tree night to give free drinks and cakes to our senior Sheppertonians.

Santa and his reindeer will be arriving down the high street at around 6.20.

Carols and Christmas songs will be sung all night long !

NOTE !

It is important to remember that .. The High Street will close from 3.30pm-10pm so do plan accordingly.

The slip-roads by the shops will also close from 1.00pm . to allow stall holders and fairground rides to set up.

There should be NO cars in the slip roads from 1.00pm latest

Nobody has to miss the event just because it s cold . Just pop into the Village Hall.

Max s Festival of Football at Thamesmead School Thamesmead School are delighted to announce that ÂŁ2351.06 has been raised during Max's Festival of Football on Friday 25th October in memory of Max Lovell, our student who sadly passed away from cancer in January. The funds raised will be split between Shooting Star Children's Hospice and Momentum Children's Charity who supported Max and his family.

Staff team v boys of Thamesmead

Nearly 200 students took part in a 5-a-side football competition on Friday afternoon with the matches refereed and supported by coaches from the Chelsea FC Foundation (Max's favourite team). Max's parents joined us for these games and it was fantastic to have them with us. The winning teams from each year group were: Year 7 - Marcell's Marvels Year 8 - Jake Dear Carries FC Year 9 - Frankie Allen FC Year 10 - Will's Angels Year 11 - Lads on TourĂŠ During the week we held a raffle with some amazing prizes and this helped to contribute to our brilliant total. Across the school it was mufti day with students and staff wearing sporting shirts or blue and white whilst donating to the charities.

The day ended with BBQ food supplied by Innovate Food and then a football match of Max's Boys vs Thamesmead Staff. The result was a 2-2 draw with Thamesmead staff then winning on penalties. A glorious rainbow filled the sky during the match.

Many students, parents, staff and some of Max's family then gathered while Max's boys team read a moving tribute to him to conclude the day. They then unveiled an engraved bench, beside a newly planted Cherry Tree which will stand as a memorial to Max and provide a place to sit and remember.

Update on Recycling in High Street

By Monica Chard, Editor Last month we brought you news of new recycling initiatives which mean you can get rid of more things than you realised, in a sustainable manner, and raise money at the same time. Quality Fruit on Shepperton High Street have set up recycling bins at the back of the counter for a variety of items. It seems many of you are already finding them and 10 boxes of recycling were collected in just one week. As well as crisp packets of all brands you can now recycle the following: Biscuits and Snack Bin

It is obviously still a bit of a minefield and it will take a while to get us all understanding what and where we can recycle. There is plenty which is NOT accepted but it is worth taking the items above, putting them in the appropriate bin and then read what is not accepted too. Poor Fiona Povey has had to go through and discard things that are not recycled. It is a huge waste of her time so please take a moment to read what is OK and what is not.

Well done to all of you who are wanting to make a difference. If we all do our little bit then we really CAN make a difference. The money raised from crisp packets alone in one year is on track to reach ÂŁ1000. That will go to Saxon school and will be a huge bonus.

A True Nativity Gem

Last year we were invited to a special nativity play.

Run by St Mary Magdalene Church with Shepperton Studios it took place outside Littleton House.

The weather was amazing and we watched a magical journey of shepherds, Mary and Joseph, wise men, an angel and baby Jesus acting out the Christmas story.

The animals were real. Sheep watched proceedings dolefully. The donkey was patience itself (until it came to loading it back on the truck to go home later apparently!). The narration told the magical story and we all joined in singing carols at the end.

It truly was a great start to the Christmas season. It is scheduled this year for December 21st.

Blooming Marvellous Spelthorne

By Monica Chard, Editor As always, Spelthorne in Bloom brought out the best in the borough which was fitting for this special event, the 30th anniversary.

In attendance at the dazzling event held in the Orangery at Shepperton Studios, were the Mayor of Spelthorne, Mary Madams, and the Chairman of Surrey County Council, Tony Samuels. Both spoke of the importance of creating a beautiful borough for the wellbeing of all. Tony Samuels also emphasised the importance of volunteering and the difference it makes to our world.

Spelthorne in Bloom encourages residents and businesses to take pride in the borough, planting out gardens to delight residents. Gardening is known to be good for mental health, and seeing beauty in our every day can only be a good thing for all.

There were several new entries as well as some familiar faces. Congratulations must first go to The Feathers in Laleham which won both Best Small Pub and also Best in Show. Andi, the landlady was extremely happy with that as this is her first year running the establishment and therefore the first year of Spelthorne in Bloom. Well done!

The Feathers, Laleham Jean McLeod of Squire s Bridge Road should be proud of herself. Not only did she get the award for Best Front Garden but also Best New Entrant and she collected the 3rd place award of Best Kept War Memorial for St Mary Magdalene Church, Littleton.

Congratulations also to Keith and Carole Gardiner who won Best Kept Hanging Basket and to Rosie Wallace of Thames Meadow who got a second in Best Riverside Garden.

Andi from The Feathers shows her delight in winning Best in show. With Tony Samuels, Mary Madams and Colin Squire who sponsors the award Conservation Group whose High Street planters were awarded both second place in the Best Kept Public Space and a highly commended in the Best New Entrant category. We can all agree that the high street is a better place for the planters which are so lovingly tended all year long by volunteers.

It was only fitting also to thank the team who have cared for the hanging baskets throughout the borough during the heat of this summer. Altogether there were 658 baskets to be cared for.

Community Foodbank and Lunch We have carried several articles about the Community foodbank at St Saviours over the 3 years since it started. But it is only recently that I went to see for myself what an incredible asset this is to the community. Although based in Sunbury, it covers the community across Shepperton too for now (plans of a dedicated resource will be shared as we learn more).

I arrived as there was a huge buzz and bustle in the hall. Surplus food which had been donated from many local supermarkets (Aldi Chertsey and Feltham, Lidl, Tesco Sunbury Extra and Express, Co-op Shepperton, M&S, Bookers and Costco) was being laid out for people to take home. It was staggering how much there was. This is just one

day s donation said Claire Hopkins who runs the service and who has been instrumental in getting it all up and running. It is of course a lucky dip, but I could see fruit and veg, all perfectly useable, pasta, prepared dishes and lots of bread. There were even flowers.

shopping bags, then lunch was served. Both hot and cold options with cakes, tea and coffee available too.

There were clearly many regulars attending. It is a lifeline to many. Claire told me that in Sunbury it is estimated that 1/9 households have one person at least who goes hungry every day. With this amount of surplus food it is just not right. Come down and get fed! I heard of a shoplifter in Tesco who, when being cautioned, was told get down to St Saviours Community Foodbank and was walked over Sunbury Cross. This is a much better way of solving a problem.

We must stress though, that the surplus food is for anyone. For those of you who do not like food waste, this is for you too.

Stanley Bulford RIP Stan Bulford, was the manager of the Shepperton Village Allotment site in Grove Road for 12 years and sadly he passed away on 25th October. His funeral was on 13th November.

The allotments celebrated its 150th anniversary last year and the site has many accolades: They are the best kept allotments in Spelthorne and many allotment holders have won prizes over the years for their hard work. Stan was instrumental in the introduction of half plots, enabling more people to share in the love of having and developing an allotment plot.

Christmas Window with a Difference

Local Shepperton resident and TV/film set designer Rebecca Morton has been working with Two Rivers Shopping Centre, Spelthorne Borough Council Leisure Services and a selection of Spelthorne primary and Secondary Schools to create a magical and meaningful Christmas display on Staines High Street.

Fight Loss of Green Belt in Charlton Village

By Karen Howkins. Edited by Monica Chard Charlton Village is just that...a village. Surrounded by fields, stables and horses, you can forgive yourself for thinking you are in the countryside (ok, ignoring the busy road that bisects it of course).

But the village nature of this part of Shepperton is under severe threat and we all need to act now if we are to preserve the green belt and the rural feel residents so love.

With a hugely ambitious target to fulfil, the council is being forced to look at all land options. Even they have stated that they feel the number of homes they are expected to built is too dense for the borough. Central government has imposed a target of 603 homes to be built in Spelthorne each year over the next 15 years. Under the plan, Spelthorne BC encouraged landowners to contact them, with a view to redeveloping land, even if this was previously refused green belt land. Everything is up for consideration.

The Green Belt in Spelthorne covers 3320 hectares which equates to 65% of the total area of the Borough. Green Belt also includes the reservoirs in Spelthorne which represent 26.2% of the total Green Belt area which means finding space hard.

The proposed plan for Charlton Village is for:• Around 135 homes on the horse s field just as you come into the Village from Shepperton • A further 250 homes on the land by the old speed camera going towards the south on the Water board land. There also has to be a provision for a permanent Gypsy and Traveller Site (G&T) initially for 15 families.

This agreement for land use will only be granted upon both site development, and the G&T site will NOT be for travelling gypsies that turn up periodically in Spelthorne.

Under the Council s proposal at least 40% of the 385 homes must be affordable homes.

Both of the mentioned plots of land are in Green Belt but under the new rules and regulation development may be permitted if they satisfy the below five conditions.

Based on the above the Charlton Residents Association, with the support of our, Borough Councillor Maureen Attewell and neighbouring Borough Councillor Robin Sider BEM, are very strongly opposing this proposition and working with the Resident Association to stop this over development of Charlton Village representing an 85% increase in residents.

At the start of December there is Spelthorne Bulletin that will be delivered to every home in Spelthorne including the village. Do read the article on the Local Plan. It will give full details. Write or email before 6th January 2020 making your opposition to the plans for Charlton. Do also sign the Village petition that is being put together.

Please also read any local newsletters that will be issued. Let s be proactive in opposing this.

We know how hard it is to get out of our roads in the morning. This will only get worse with the extra traffic that this plan will bring. What about facilities like schools and health centres? Enough is enough!

Intermediate Youth Speaks Won by Sunbury Manor This year s annual speaking competition for Spelthorne secondary schools, organised by Shepperton Aurora Rotary Club, saw several changes to the usual format. Firstly, the competition was in the form of a debate with each team having a Chairperson, Proposer and Opposer, secondly, after last year, with 11 teams competing, it was decided to hold the intermediate and senior competitions on two separate evenings. In light of the changes to the competition, this proved to be a very wise decision. Thirdly, the Riverside Arts Centre in Sunbury was the choice of venue and this change was also very successful.

Four secondary schools were represented on the evening; none of the competitors were fazed by the new format and all the teams gave presentations of a high standard; this did not make an easy job for the adjudicators who, this year, were Pauline Hedges, Ross Ferguson and Ron Enticott; all three commented on how much they had enjoyed their evening.

The winning team was Sunbury Manor School (pictured with Mayor) with their debate on Is it smart for teenagers to own a Smart Phone?

The Best Speaker was Isabella Abbey from St Pauls Catholic College (pictured next column). She was the Opposer in her team s debate on The government should abolish university tuition fees and wowed the judges.

A little sprinkle of glitter to end 2019 There is no denying that 2019 has been a challenging year nationally for the housing market. The ongoing uncertainty of Brexit, political turmoil and the more recent general election has resulted in further fall back in values brought on by indecision by both buyers and sellers.

Recipe of the Month Orange Cake

The Community Café @Riverhousebarn in Walton on Thames continues with recipes showing how you can use leftovers.

They create wonderful food from surplus, donated by a local supermarket. Go and try their surplus lunch for £5 and they will donate the proceeds to local charities feeding those on low incomes and who are struggling.

This very simple easy cake is our best seller in the café – if you stick to the original recipe, it is Gluten free and dairy free but without compromising on taste. Oranges which escape from their net bags always end up in our box of surplus goodies at the beginning of the day, so it s another excellent use of ingredients. We ve even experimented with supplementing the ground almonds with breadcrumbs (another staple of ours) and guess what? .it works!

And is obviously much more economical. Give it a go.

2 large oranges 200 g ground almonds 225g caster sugar 5 eggs 1tsp baking powder Put the oranges in a pan of water and bring to the boil – simmer for at least one hour, until the whole orange is soft. When cool enough to handle, chop the whole fruit (skin and all) roughly and put in a food processor and blend to a thick pulp. Then simply add all other ingredients and whizz until blended. Put mixture in a cake tin (20cm) and bake for 40 mins at 180°. Leave to cool in tin before turning out. Tastes even better after a day or two

Thamesmead in Rotary Fund Raiser Thamesmead students once again showed why it is that they lead the way locally in performing arts. The occasion was One World, an evening of music, dance and performance sponsored and supported by Shepperton Aurora Rotary.

There was a varied programme from pupils from years 7-11.

We had on trend messages of plastics in the ocean with Under the Sea, a masked performance of the Gary Newman song, Cars, which could almost have been a bit spooky but for one performer furtively waving at her parents in the audience!

Big Yellow Taxi had us singing along and the Where do the Children Play by Cat Stevens/ Yusuf Islam brought the first half to a close.

We were entertained during the interval by the fabulous guest harpist Margaret Watson while glasses were replenished and raffle tickets sold to raise much needed funds.

The second half had some fabulous pieces. Doom Days treated us to beat boxing. Fake Plastic Trees and What About Us demonstrated

some strong vocal performances and Pretty Shining People brought brightness and happiness to the stage. We ended with a rousing Circle of Life with huge applause from the audience.

The staff of Thamesmead do an incredible job of bringing out the best in pupils. Performing in front of an audience, whether in dance, song or playing an instrument, sets them up for the future, giving them confidence and self awareness. I am always in awe of the teaching staff who create these shows. Mrs Burtsell and Mr Evans seem to know no bounds!

So congratulations to everyone who was involved in the evening. We are looking forward to the next extravaganza, a personal favourite which may have me singing along; School of Rock!

Letter from Your Mayor Compliments of the Season to Everyone!

I cannot believe we are over half way through this fabulous Mayoral Year and Christmas is almost upon us! My consort, Andrew, and I continue to enjoy the wonderful experiences that this role gives us.

As well as representing our lovely borough all across Surrey for civic, ceremonial and charity events, we have happily been kept busy spending time in our own borough with all the fantastic groups of volunteer workers, schools, churches, family and fun day events that make ours such a great community.

The Christmas period is a time of celebration, but also of generosity and giving and I would urge any of you with a little time on your hands, to offer your help if you can. By contacting any of our voluntary groups, day centres, places of worship etc., I am sure you find your offer of even one- or two-hours help would be gratefully received. You do not need a special skill; your time is the real gift.

I would very much like to thank all of you that we have had the pleasure of meeting over our mayoral year so far – you have made us feel so welcome wherever we went.

Don t forget – I am here as Mayor for everyone in our community. So if I can help in any way to promote or support your event, please do get in touch. Then, after the festivities are over, do come along to the Orangery at Shepperton Studios for a Singalong to Grease evening on Friday 24th January. When you are not singing and dancing along, you can enjoy a few drinks and a lovely buffet!

However you spend this special season, I do hope that it is a time of joy, love, kindness and hope for each and every one of you.

Unfortunately Burglars are looking for the houses that are in darkness, those that Inspector Cilia display their wrapped Christmas Presents under the Christmas tree in view of the windows and those who have not taken any extra secure measures. Their Christmas will be made when they have gained entry to your property and stolen your valuables.

So maybe its time to spend some money on upgrading your security for Christmas. Look at burglar alarms, video door bells and property marking and kite marked locks and doors. Please look out for your neighbours especially if you know they may be away!

I attended the Spelthorne in Bloom Finals at Shepperton Studios. A really lovely evening with so many local people who volunteer to make the area a lovely place. Volunteers are so important in the local communities and I would like to personally thank all the local volunteers in the area. We have worked very closely this year with a number of a volunteer organisations and they have greatly assisted those in need of food and shelter and support in times of crisis.

The Remembrance Sunday Parades and services were held all over Spelthorne and this year the police worked with the local Spelthorne Joint Enforcement Team who assisted with the road closures. All the events were well attended. Police officers and staff who laid the reefs this year were all volunteers from all different departments across Spelthorne. The police will continue to work with the Council JET team next year to ensure that the Parades and services are kept safe.

Fun and Dancing with Ashford Folk Dancers

Ashford folk dancers (AFD) had a lovely evening celebrating Halloween on Wednesday 30 October. Some members wore costumes to make it more special.

A few dances had a Halloween theme and were nicely executed thanks to our Chairman, Tony, who was calling on this occasion. Callers change every week, so they can call a variety of dances.

All had great fun. Tony made sure to keep calling over the music so that the moves were all synchronised. We had live music played by Peter on the accordion – which was a treat as usually we dance on recorded music.

The club meets every Wednesday evening at St Mary s Parish Hall (with a large carpark) in Sunbury from 8pm to 10.15pm. It costs £2 for members and £2.50 for non-members. It is excellent value for money, which includes tea or coffee and biscuits during the break. Special Halloween cakes and biscuits were offered that evening.

We dance with friends, with great music on a lovely wooden-floor. Anyone is very welcome whether you are a novice or experienced. The first night is free anyway, so why don t you try?

When I was younger it used to drive me mad when my dad said 'I don't want anything for Christmas...' How could he say that?

Then a couple of years ago I realised I'd become him. I don't want or even need more of anything. Many of my friends feel the same way. We don't want to add to plastic or clothes waste. We don't want clutter. Yet the pleasure of giving and receiving at Christmas is something most of us enjoy, so why not give a gift experience instead.

Gardening Matters The Holly and the Ivy The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood the holly bears the crown.

There s no doubt that holly and ivy are synonymous with Christmas. This dates back to preChristian era when pagans used evergreen decorations in their mid-winter celebrations.

It s not hard to see why they were attracted to these beautiful plants which offer a promise of better times to come during the most barren time of the year.

Early Christians adopted them too and imbued holly particularly with Christian symbolism.

In the carol, ivy isn t actually mentioned again until the last verse which is a repeat of the first. It has a cameo role because of earlier songs, such as The Contest of The Ivy and The Holly, in which the attributes of holly (male) and ivy (female) are compared. Our ancestors lived close to the earth and the seasons and were open to symbolism. As modern gardeners we might be sceptical of the symbolism, but we can embrace the glory of these seasonal plants.

Ivy (Hedera) comes in many sizes, from the tiny-leaved Spetchley to the hand-sized leaves of Maple Leaf . It also comes in a beautiful variety of colours from the rich green, crimped leaves of Parsley crested which makes great ground cover, to the gorgeous red-stemmed yellow leaves of the climber Sunrise .

Holly (Ilex) is pretty easy-going too. It will grow almost anywhere except really waterlogged soil. It s tolerant of pollution, salt and wind and grows really slowly, so it s great for small gardens in the city and by the sea.

Protect it from rabbits if they frequent your garden as they love to eat the bark. Trim it in August if you have to and remove plain green shoots on variegated varieties. Take cuttings in the late summer or autumn. It does resent root disturbance once it s established so make sure you plant it in the right place first time.

Hollies are male or female but not necessarily named to help you distinguish.

Silver Queen is actually male and Martin is female!

You ll need both for berries so talk to an expert at the nursery or garden centre to be sure or google the answer on your phone!

If you only have room for one holly bush, grow a self-fertile variety such as J C Van Tol .

For winter baskets I d recommend the limegreen Ursula and her grey-leaved friend Frederick .

Ivy is a doddle to grow. There are only a few things to remember. Cut it back in spring to encourage new growth and take cuttings between October and March when the growth is woody. Yellow varieties need sunshine and don t let any of it grow into your eaves.

The Brigitte Trust needs your help. To celebrate Tesco s Centenary, the supermarket is offering a special voting round of its community funding scheme which will see grants of £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000 awarded to community projects. 3 groups in each Tesco region have been shortlisted and The Brigitte Trust are one of them. Volunteers from the BT support those diagnosed with cancer, visiting them at home and helping them live the best life they can through their illness. It is a free service and they depend on donations and fund raising to offer the service. Please look out for the scheme which runs to the end of December and place your token in the Brigitte Trust box as you leave the store.
