Welcome back and to September, with the return to school as well as a return to a more normal life!

Although we hear Big Tree Night is cancelled, there is talk of a smaller alternative. Watch this space!

Shepperton continues to show what a wonderful place it is to live. A sad post on social media about an attempted bag snatch from a lady waiting for a bus at the end of the high street elicited outrage, but most importantly, kindness. One lady offered to replace her torn bag.

Another wanted to send her flowers.

It was heartening to see such good in the face of despicable behaviour.

In September look out for posters in shop windows showing how they used to look in 1951. It is a project by the Sunbury & Shepperton Local

September 2021 History Society to mark their 70th anniversary.

Finally big congratulations to The Barley Mow who are one of only 32 UK pubs to be awarded the CAMRA 50th anniversary Golden Award.

The Sunbury Bank

The building in the photo is familiar today as part of the Riverside Arts Centre in Thames Street, Sunbury, but for many years it was the village bank. This, the first bank in Sunbury, was opened in 1883 by Thomas Ashby and Co, who had been founded in Staines in 1796 (another branch of this Quaker family owned a brewery in Staines, and many local pubs). The date on this building however is 1888, so there must have been another premises for the first few years.

T he It was built on the site of the garden of a house, next to where the Assembly Rooms (now also Stre part of the Arts Centre) were later built. Although quite small the building was elaborately decorated architecturally. A cheque issued by the Sunbury Bank in 1901, now in the possession of ope the History Society, reveals that the partners in the bank bran were Thomas, Frederick and Skidmore Ashby. The manager in 1894 was Joseph Spencer Skidmore, presumably a relation.

In 1903 Thomas Ashby & Co. with its 22 local branchesthis was taken over by Barclay & Co, It w which also had Quaker roots, and the new manager for Barclay's 57 Thames Street branch was a Mr P. Marsh. Under the new ownership the branch had sub-branches at Station Road, Sunbury part and at Shepperton. By the time of the Second World Warorat the position was reversed and the Thames Street and Shepperton branches became sub-branches to Sunbury Common (as it was the then known), although later both regained their independence. In the 1950s the bank still had Ash the telephone number 'Sunbury 4' which presumably means they had one of the first telephones In 1 in the village.

Barclays closed the branch with effect from 7th April 2000.

New Beginnings

Rory Edwards is a local parent, teacher of 28 years and a school governor. He offers us an insight into certain dilemmas parents might face at the start of the new academic year.

This summer holiday has been slightly different in our household in preparation for the new academic year. So, what makes this year different for us? Well, my eldest isn’t going back to school, she’s off to university. Not only that, she’s doing something in complete contrast to every other year: she’s being super organised. My happiness about how she’s grown up has been tempered however by the downside of her organisation, the monetary cost of this. Not fees and loans but the things she’ll need on a day-to-day basis. I knew the first item on her list was coming. “A laptop” she said at some point in July. At this point, I was relieved she picked the same laptop that I had already looked into. This organisation continued until something which I hadn’t even considered, new clothes. But we only recently bought new clothes I thought. No, these are new clothes for university!! Is this the difference between dads and daughters?

I don’t think I want to know the answer, but it did get me thinking what advice I could give to those parents who may be going into the different key stages of education for the first time.

Nursery: This is the hardest for parents as for many, apart from the worry about what will happen if they hurt themselves, it’s the first time that your children are away for any significant amount of time. My advice would be for you to be confident in the place you are sending your children. This sounds obvious but if you’re not, make a decision early. After 2 days of being in nursery, we took one of our children out because they had rung on both days saying that they couldn’t stop our child from crying. wasn’t our first choice but in the end, we’re very glad we did.

Year 7: There’s been so much written about going to secondaryye school and the ways to support your children that there is probably very little that I canin add so I will take a slightly different approach. Try to persuade your children to join afa club: before school, at lunchtime or after school, every school has a huge amount going on and they’re not necessarily all sports based either. I know this is h T easier said than done but 1) they will meet others with similaren interests and 2) learning happens in many different ways. ne

Sixth Form: Thedi vast majority of students will find the jump ba from GCSE very hard and perseverance is key here. However, most on schools allow students to start a course and change before a certain deadline if things co aren’t working out, usually about 4 weeks into the course. Any later and students will or have missed too much of a course to reasonably catch up. I saygr to students in year 11 to pick their post-16 do options carefully as doing something that you don’t enjoy for nearly 2 co years is very hard and will take its toll mentally. Enjoyment is the key and my own experish ence is that I gave up A-level Chemistry and fir took up Further Mathematics instead. I remember my Mathssh teacher at the time asked me why I was always smiling. Well, I was w enjoying what I was studying so why wouldn’t I be happy?

Life Returning to Normal at Thamesmead After the lockdowns and restrictions of the past two years Thamesmead School are looking forward to welcoming visitors back to see us.

Our response to the pandemic was widely praised by our parent and student community as we led the way and delivered live teaching via Microsoft Teams from the earliest days of the first lockdown. Our carefully planned return to school following both lockdowns ensured that we could keep the students and staff as safe as possible and minimise the impact on learning of any restrictions we had to impose for safety. Supporting our students to continue learning as part of a community has been our priority throughout. As our 2020/21 school year finished we were over moon to see the return of our Sports day, outdoor celebration assemblies, and a cast filming of our much delayed 2020 school production ‘School of Rock’. These occasions definitely helped put the magic back into school life at the end of this peculiar year.

At present our plan will be to return to school in September to the routines that worked so well to create a happy and thriving school pre-pandemic. There have been some ‘Covid wins’ which we will maintain but we are very much looking forward to getting back to the business of making Thamesmead an even better school after all of the ups and downs of the pandemic. We know that if you are choosing a new school for your child there is no substitute to seeing it with your own eyes. We very much hope to welcome you on one of our tours in the Autumn term or at our Open evening on 14th October.

Halliford School’s New Woodward Building This year sees Halliford School mark its Centenary, and at the centre of its celebrations is the construction of a new building on site. CARE in Shepperton

In the last issue of this magazine, we told you we were planning to restart our service from 5 th July. I am pleased to say we achieved that. There have been some teething problems – definitely much easier to stop than to restart. Hopefully, all the clients have managed to contact us and receive the services they needed.

We managed to get letters to all the clients registered with us at the start of the pandemic.

Sadly, we have lost a few. The losses have been more than made up for by new clients registering. Clearly, there is a continuing need for our services.

July was a quiet month; August has seen a gradual increase in requests.

The response to my request for more volunteers has been excellent from the Shepperton community. We have now managed to replace most of the gaps we had for manning the telephone. The response for drivers has not been so good. We have two new ones but really need more. We try to have a duty driver for each weekday, plus some back up drivers for those times when two jobs come through at the same time. At the moment we do not have enough drivers to cover each weekday, which means some of us are booking more than one day a month. That’s fine in the short term but not so good if people have holidays or are unwell themselves. You need a four door car, in reasonable condition, a clean driving license and undergo a DBS check. Normally, if we are not driving around Shepperton, the furthest we are asked to go is Ashford or St Peters Hospitals. Occasionally we are asked to go to Woking or Guildford. However, if a driver is not comfortable with that, they say so and we allocate the job elsewhere. If you feel you could be available for one day a month, or even occasionally, please contact me on cliffshears@outlook.com.

Shepperton Residents Association Hello again from your Local Residents’ Association!

Through all the disruption that the Covid pandemic has caused over the past 18 months or so, we hope that you are keeping safe and well and are now managing some degree of normality in your lives. With the development of the vaccine and the ensuing programme of vaccinations, hopefully life is beginning to take shape again. Our sympathies go to those who have lost family or friends over the last year.

We will be holding our next OPEN MEETING at 8.00pm on Tuesday 21 st September in the Village Hall and we hope many of you will be able to attend on that evening. We will discuss a few of the current topics that affect us all and there will be time for you to ask questions and to air your views.

cal Plan being produced to cover a number of council policies over the next 15 years including local housing , environment issues, green belt policy and more. We will be monitoring progress of this plan very closely. There are aspects which will affect Staines in particular.

Sheep Walk: the Hamiltons site has now been vacated following an injunction order.

Neighbouring land – Symbiotic Land – has also been investigated by council enforcement officers regarding dumped waste aggregate. Again, this has been closely monitored by the SRA and we have worked with Spelthorne Council on this issue.

Shepperton Studios Extension: As you may have noticed, the approved work has now commenced in the North-West portion of the site – north of the River Ash. Also, trenching works are underway around the site – North and South – laying new electricity cables for the extension.

These are quite evident on the Laleham Road. A consultation group has been set up by local councillors and residents’ associations with the Studios so that progress can be monitored and questioned if necessary. Members of the SRA committee are in that group.

ECO-PARK: The gasifier has not operated since Christmas 2020. The Anaerobic Digester is now working fully again after a period of reduced function. Complaints regarding smell, noise and light pollution caused by the site have been raised by local residents and made to SUEZ and the Environment Agency. Again the SRA are monitoring the ensuing investigation.

The (Priory) Stables, Chertsey Road: Enforcement notices are pending action with regard to demolition of the wall near the entrance to this site. The planning permission for 2 blocks of 4 stables each has been halved by the council planning inspector.

Could Cameo Help You or a Loved One?

Cameo, a day centre for people with dementia, has been running for 30 years and should have celebrated this milestone in 2020 at the Greeno Centre, from where they have provided their services for in excess of 25 years.

Cameo has been unable to operate at the Greeno Centre since March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic as Spelthorne Borough Council shut the centre for over a year. But we are pleased to announce that we have reopened, operating out of St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Green Street, Lower Sunbury.

Father Andrew and his parishioners welcomed us to St Mary’s Parish Hall on 2nd November 2020 and we are very happy to be able to provide daycare to people with dementia in this lovely environment, with a full kitchen where we provide a home cooked two course lunch.

Shepperton Medical Centre - Your Chance for Answers Face to Face

Few readers of these pages will be unaware of the flurry of excitement over the Shepperton Medical Centre. And as the world opens up to renewed human contacts it is good that your Residents Association is able to offer an Open Meeting on Tuesday 21st September in the Village Hall of Shepperton when members of the Practice will answer your questions on developments and changes. It is probable that even without the pandemic the familiar ways of working would have had to adjust, as our population becomes increasingly elderly and career options change beyond recognition. Those younger than I might find it hard to think that once you could work your entire life for a single employer, as loyal to you as you were to your firm or institution; nowadays this would be a rare oddity even in Japan, the beacon of professional stability.

Well, Covid 19 has accelerated all this with exhaustion and burn-out. Only those working in the Health Service can really know the stress, the toll which the disease has inflicted on those caring for patients. This has been made worse by the vicious irresponsibility of social media trolls, oh world wide but even in our quiet village too. I don’t just mean the absurdities of the anti-vaccine brigade: malice and inflammatory postings are much more widespread than that.

Naturally the evening in our Village Hall will be tranquil and courteous: we have traditions to uphold in Shepperton. Reviving our Open Meetings after over 18 months is a welcome return to normality, and soothing the animation over our Medical Centre can be another strand in that return. BIG TREE NIGHT – 2021. Cancelled Sadly, for the second successive year, we have decided to cancel Big Tree Night 2021. The committee arrived at this decision based on some recent government indications and the likelihood of further constraints that would make BTN impossible to monitor on the night.

It was felt that, in the weeks towards Christmas, it would become more and more unlikely to get permission to run this event. A recent statement from a government minister indicated that, as we proceed into Autumn/Winter, he said “we plan proof of vaccination as a condition of entry into… venues where large crowds gather”. This could mean checking for vaccine ‘passports’ onsite -which would be impossible for an event like Big Tree Night. We cannot be certain that we will be able to run the event.

Preparation for Big Tree Night is a complex process and takes a good deal of time and planning and this starts around August, therefore the decision has been taken now to give 2021 a miss and start again in 2022, much like the Summer Fair.

When we do look at Big Tree Night again, we will need to consider adding some people to the shrinking organising committee, which arose, originally, from members of the local business community.

If you feel that you wish to take an active role in this committee please let me know – on 07850 722379 – and we can take this forward into 2022.

However, CHRISTMAS has NOT been cancelled in Shepperton this year! We shall shortly begin planning the process and logistics of putting up the Christmas Trees in the High Street and beyond – as we do every year. Again, this takes a good deal of time and effort by very few people. If you are interested in taking an active role in this planning …. Please let me know – same number as above.

New Signage for Lord’s Bridge Pocket Garden

You might have noticed a new story board which has gone up at the Lord’s Bridge pocket garden on the corner of the high street and Renfree Way. The little garden continues to astound us. It has grown in maturity and beauty and is such a great addition to our community.

The story board tells the history of Lord’s Bridge and it’s origins, going back to 1651.

The corner itself used to be the village pound, where stray animals were kept until reclaimed. The local lock up for reprobates was also sited there, although it became so dilapidated that it was not fit for purpose and was pulled down.

In more recent years, the corner was reclaimed from the brambles. Over 10 years it has been gradually tamed by volunteers from the Shepperton Village Conservation Group. You can read about the progress of the project over the last decade.

The pocket garden really is the pride of Shepperton now and is frequently entered into local competitions, such as Spelthorne in Bloom.

Do go and have a look and learn about the area. The next project for the SVCG is the clearing of the Lord’s Bridge pond over Renfree Way. They are looking for volunteers, so if you want to take part in the pride of our village, now is your chance. See page 6 for details.

Charity Donations or Fly Tipping?

Walking down the high street one Monday morning recently I saw our intrepid Jean, picking up bags from outside the QEF charity shop (closed on a Monday) and putting them in her rubbish cart. “Look at it all!” she said. Boxes, bags and furniture, left outside the shop and literally spilling across the pavement. This is what

is known as fly tipping and as such carries an £80 on the spot fine. You

might think that by leaving your donations outside the charity shops you are doing them a favour. But it defeats the object.

Shops do not accept donations left outside.

They are obliged to dispose of them, due to health and safety rules. Jean had called the fly tipping squad to come and collect what she could not take away.

The shops have notices on the windows stating “Do not leave donations outside”.

Please do as they ask. Donate on the days when the shops will take them. Hand them over personally. The shops can then sell your donated goods and raise money for good causes.

Your goods do not end up in landfill, and you will not be creating a fly tipping problem. Some people complain about Shepperton having too many charity shops, but I love them! So many treasures that other people no longer want. So let’s make sure those goods end up where they can do good, and not in the bin!

Recipe of the Month Banana Upside Down Cake Preparation time: 25 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes

For Banana Topping 120 g brown sugar 60 g butter 1.5 tbsp golden syrup 3 bananas sliced For the Cake 2 ripe bananas 2 tbsp yoghurt 90 g butter at room temperature 180 g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs 180 g self-raising flour ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp nutmeg

Set aside.

2 tbs Place the butter and sugar into a large mixing 90 g bowl. Whisk till pale and fluffy.

180 g Add the vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time, whisking after each one.

Lost Racing Pigeon Returned Home

Thank you to local residents Mr and Mrs Morgan, who contacted Shepperton Matters with their story of ‘Belgie’ the racing pigeon.

“In the middle of July this year we found a tagged racing pigeon in our garden which seemed to be limping badly. We caught it and discovered racing bands on it’s leg along with a mobile telephone number. We housed the pigeon in a small garden shed with wild bird feed and water and rang the number. A gentleman answered, who at the time was lifting bales of hay at a farm in Northumberland. He was ecstatic when he discovered the bird’s number, as this was his best bird and it was on it’s very last racing flight from Guernsey back to Northumberland before being retired. The bird was a Belgian Cock and we christened him ‘Belgie’. The owner, Mr. Hawke, sent a special courier the next day to collect the bird, and after a road journey of many miles, Mr. Hawke contacted us to say ‘Belgie’ had arrived home safely. Unfortunately the bird’s leg was broken but Mr. Hawke said he would put a splint on it and expected him to make a good recovery.

The courier, who had a number of lost racing pigeons in his van, said that he was very busy collecting them and it appears that thousands of birds had lost their way over the last few weeks due to adverse weather conditions at the time.

It was a special episode in our restricted days and we were thrilled we could help.

All the best for a happy retirement ‘Belgie’.

Community Events Gaining Momentum Despite the heat there was a fantastic array of plants donated or offered as swaps at the first get2getherlocally Pop Up Plant Swap on Saturday 17th July held in Staines.

Many came to enjoy the afternoon and a fine array of herbs, vegetables, fruits plus indoor and outdoor plants were swapped and everyone was pleased with their swap or find!

Any plants left over where offered FREE to the community, post event and were all taken to be enjoyed. Nichola Cornes, Founder of get2getherlocally CIC, said, “we hope this will become an annual event and welcome all who are interested in gardening to join our Facebook Group G2GL Spelthorne Plant Swap.”

Celebrations at Burway for Olympic Champion

Laleham has a local hero. Tom Barras shows off his silver medal from the Men’s Quadruple Sculls at the Tokyo Olympics. Tom was coached by Burway’s Jim Mathiesen when he was a teenager. He started at Burway when he was only 11.

Rotary Waterways Walk Success

It has been a frustrating time, but everyone was so enthusiastic to get going again, for all the charities involved, many of which have struggled with lower donations and higher costs during the pandemic.

Due to Covid 19, Shepperton & Sunbury Rotary had to defer this walk from May to 4th July 2021 to qualify for insurance. The Walk itself was sponsored by Shepperton Studios, and, as a result, we were able to provide environmentally friendly metal drinks bottles (thanks to organiser Ian Arthur) with our Rotary logo, and with ‘sponsored by Shepperton Studios’. One of these re-usable bottles was given to every walker.

Well over 80 walkers plus Rotary helpers took part in the Sponsored Walk. Each walker paid a small administration fee to Rotary and then raised money for their own preferred Charity. Ian Bowyer organised marshalls and walks leaders/end and middle walkers and the whole club supported the walk by preparing the route (path clearance and signage) and then, on the day, acting as marshalls and leaders, middle and end walkers.

After heavy rain overnight, Rotary had to set up a gazebo, but overall we had an excellent day! Three groups of walkers set out and all got a little wet about halfway round and, after the heavy rain overnight, there were more than a few muddy puddles! Many of our 80 plus walkers expressed the view that the walk was very professionally managed, so congratulations to everyone. It was wonderful to see so many participants, walking for their own charities.

Annie Roper 1944-2021

Better known to many as Fairy Liquide Annie died peacefully on 6 June after a long illness. Without Annie there would have been no Fairy Liquide and no Laleham Pantomime.

At a New Year’s Eve party in 2012 at Annie’s house a number of short sketches and songs were performed by those present, some with a seasonal flavour. Annie pondered whether the Laleham Residents Association could put on a pantomime at the village hall. The question was ducked and again when she asked a couple of months later, but on the third time of asking it was taken to the LRA Committee where there were mixed views. Would it actually happen and might there be considerable unrecovered costs?

Annie was determined. She had already written a pantomime script - ‘Jack and the Upside Down Stalk’ many years previously and it had been staged once before. The LRA Committee gave her the green light to go ahead, so she started to put the other parts of the production jigsaw together. She cajoled square dancing friends and others to attend auditions in the village hall, found a director, bought, begged and borrowed costumes and assembled a team to take care of lighting, sound, make-up and stage management duties. The Laleham panto was born and rehearsals started in earnest with Annie taking a central acting role. children and pensioners. The panto took a year off in 2019 when she put on ‘The Good Old Days 1890-1950’, in the style of the Old Tyme Musical with sketches from the music hall era and after. Once again this was a sell out and received great acclaim.

Annie had a full life. Her personality was outgoing and bubbly. She always had a passion for musical theatre. She had sung the lead in Oklahoma at the Wimbledon Theatre, was a member of the Barnes and Richmond Operatic Society and had appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. At the same time she had a successful career in Promotions and Public Relations work and formed her own company ASK Associates with high profile clients such as Texaco, British Gas and Jaguar. She also had a passion for travel, including in her younger days making an overland trip through Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and into Pakistan.

However, it is as Fairy Liquide that most readers will remember her best. Annie and Fairy Liquide we miss you both. Contrary to the words of the song, we always loved a fairy when she was Fairy Liquide.

Anyone who has visited Thames Court, or walked along the towpath in Shepperton, can’t have failed to notice the iconic Shepperton ‘resident’ looking out wistfully across Shepperton lock from the balcony of a modern house.

The Blues Brothers figure has even been used as a clue on a Shepperton treasure hunt trail. He has sat looking out across the river for a couple of decades, but it is now time for him to retire.

House owners Sayma Robbie and Chris Cox came up with the idea of auctioning the figure, with all money raised being donated to the Swan Sanctuary. Sayma and Chris took in a baby Egyptian goose this spring which had been pecked and abandoned on the towpath. The care the little fellow received from the Swan Sanctuary was inspiring, so this is a way of returning some thanks.

If you’re planting bulbs for the first time, or in a new area of the garden it helps to have a colour scheme in mind. In a boydominated house (three sons and a husband) I like to give some areas of my garden a more girly theme. Tulips are great for this purpose (and are some of my favourite flowers). Try ‘La Belle Epoque’, which is a frothy peony-flowered tulip with pale coffee petals flushed with pink. I would contrast the texture of its showier blooms with another more traditional tulip, Pink Diamond’ or ‘Apricot Beauty’. If you’d prefer less ‘pretty’ and more drama try the almost-black ‘Paul Scherer’, which should flower in late April or early May and makes a good foil to the aforementioned Apricot Beauty, which flowers at the same time.
