So we made it through January. It seems to get harder with every lockdown. But there are certainly lots of things to be positive about. The COVID vaccine is here and many of you have contacted us to share your experiences. All positive!

We bring you some cheer this month both from Mayor Colin Barnard, and also our dear friend Chris Swift. The view from his house in Italy is quite something!

Disastrous Fire at Kempton Park 1952

On the night of 28th September 1932, a mysterious fire destroyed several of the stands at Kempton Park, which dated back to the opening of the course by Samuel Hyde in 1878. Mysterious, as it was the second time in a month that a fire had broken out at the racecourse, and precautions against accidental fire had been taken by leaving the electrical supply switched off overnight. Although suspected, arson was never proven. Despite the efforts of several local fire brigades, the Members’ stand, which is seen in thisOn picture of the conflagration, was totally de- t stroyed and the adjoining Royal Enclosure and Tattersall’s stands were badly damaged, as well ton as the refreshment rooms below. Salvage work as saved some of the furniture and other items it from the stands, but all such efforts had to be abandoned when the roof crashed down with a shower of burning debris. The flames leapt up totions 100 feet high, and lit up the countryside for nigh miles around, although fortunately the wind blew the flames away from the big public stand which escaped damage. gade The immediate problem for the racecourse management was that there was a race meeting due y stro to take place the following week. Work began the following year to rebuild the stands, and this structure lasted until the racemile course underwent a rebuilding programme in connection with the conversion to an all-weather whic course in 2006.

COVID Jab. What to Expect

Thanks to a number of locals who contacted me to tell me about their vaccination experiences.

By all accounts it is a relatively simple procedure, painless and without side effects.

The actual process of booking seems to have a few things to iron out. One reader told us that he had initially received a letter from the NHS in the post inviting him to apply for a Covid-19 vaccination at a centre in the UK giving the NHS link to book an appointment. After completing a number of personal details including post code he was offered the Epsom vaccination centre with a list of dates to book the appointment. In the end he was offered an appointment at the start of February which seemed quite a long wait. But more frustratingly, he was then asked to select an appointment for the follow up vaccination date thirteen weeks later. Having gone through all those stages the computer said there was a problem on the system and he should try to book again next morning. Very irritating!

But later the same day our reader received a text later on his mobile from the Shepperton Health Centre informing him that he could apply for a vaccination appointment at a local centre and a link to book an appointment.

This resulted in a link to book at Chertsey Hall vaccination centre, with a choice of times the following day.

He arrived at Chertsey Halls and entered the building without queuing. A lady took his temperature and he was issued with a ticket number and asked to wait. He had to answer a number of question regarding health and Covid-19 awareness. A doctor that saw him and checked that he felt ok with the process, that his general health was good and that he agreed to the vaccination. He was then shown to a place behind a screen where the doctor tasked with the vaccination was. Our reader tells me it was totally painless and simple. He was told the possible side effects of the vac-

cination and advised me to take a seat in the resting area for 15 minutes to ensure that he was total fit before going home. He was then allowed to leave the centre having assure the staff that he was completely fine. The whole process from leaving home by car in Shepperton to arriving back took one hour.

Another reader said “I went to Chertsey Hall on Wednesday and had my jab and I must congratulate everyone there on how well organised it was. The nurses doctors and volunteers were so very nice. I felt no side effects and felt positive and reassured that I had it done, so I urge people to take advantage of the offer of a jab.

Both readers said they felt that having a mobile telephone with the text facility available to the Shepperton health Centre certainly made things easier, and the offer of the Chertsey centre alleviated the stress of finding how to get to Epsom and back.

So, the vaccine is coming. Both our readers are in their 80’s. Be assured that your turn will come and that the system is being well run. As long as we all get our jab when offered it, we hope we will see a return to normal life soon.

Tasks are varied. We need volunteers to help patients and families connect via Facetime and WhatsApp. We also need runners, to get things from A to B. This will free up the medical staff who are so desperately needed elsewhere.

All staff, volunteers, outpatients and visitors have their temperature taken on every entry to the hospital and are provided with medical grade face masks daily.

We take safety extremely seriously.

Alex’s Walkathon for MIND

Hardy by name and hardy by nature!

Sheppertonian and former Halliford pupil, Alex Hardy set himself a challenge before Christmas of walking 1500 miles in 100 days. He is walking locally, so you may spot him (you may know him from his job in Prezzo in fact). He tells me his target equates to around 3 two hour walks every day, come rain, shine, snow and gales. This man is hardy indeed!

Alex, felt compelled to do something to raise awareness of and funds for mental health and will be making a significant contribution to Mind. We joined him on a (socially distanced) early morning walk one cold January morning. The 10,000 steps we did together is more than most do in a day, but it was merely a warm up for Alex! He clocked up an impressive 60,000 steps on one day alone in December. He has been in touch with Shepperton Matters since the start of his endeavour and freely admitted when he first started that he thought he has bitten off more than he could chew. He ached everywhere, had sore feel and felt a bit dejected. In addition, donations were slow to come. But that all changed.

He is now feeling fit and positive and donations are coming in thick and fast. The link is at the end of this article.

Alex told me during our walk that he had lost several friends to suicide. As well as the hopelessness of those who take their lives “it is the effect it has on those left behind” he says. No one should get to the stage of desperation that suicide is the only way out, and the effects of the pandemic and national lockdowns have had a significant impact on mental health. Mind refers to it as mental health emergency. The lure of drink and drugs as an escape and coping mechanism is all too prevalent in mental health stories. Antidepressants are the regular sticking plaster to the problem.

beneficial for mental health, so Alex’s Walkathon is very appropriate and a kind of therapy in itself.

Alex has a long way to go. He hit the 1 million step milestone after 25 days. That equates to almost 500 miles. But with more than 1000 miles to go, he would appreciate any help you can give him to encourage his efforts.

Most of us have stories to tell relating to mental health issues, whether personally or relating to family and friends. It is indeed a pandemic in its own right so let’s see if we can do something to help. There are posters around the village with details of how to donate to Alex’s cause and here it is too:

Exploring St Nicholas Church

By Bob Speel, Church Monument Researcher There are over 40 ancient churches in West London surviving from the lost county of Middlesex, with St Nicholas Church in Shepperton the most southerly. Like most of them, it contains interesting wall monuments. Visiting churches to see the monuments is not a hobby to pursue now, alas, but here is a taster of what there is to see once it is safe to do so.

The Saxons settled here and a stone church was on the site by the 12th or early 13th Century. That was lost to flooding, it is said, and what we see today, a small cross-shaped or cruciform building, dates from 1614, reusing rubble from the earlier church.

Often the tower of a church is the oldest part, but here the small, brick tower is a 1710 replacement initiated by (and largely paid for) by the Rector, Revd. Lewis Atterbury. Notable features are outside staircases to the little galleries in the north transept (18th Century) and Nave (early 19th Century), and a 1930s refurbishment brought the vestry on the south side. The result overall is pleasingly irregular and picturesque.

Inside, the oldest tablet on the walls of the Church is to Diana Bray, d.1743, made of white marble with a strong grey streak, and with a contrasting black and white marble for the flat pillars (pilasters) to each side, which support a heavy shelf above. Those distinctively streaked marbles are characteristic of the later 18th Century, and can be seen again in the tablet to Thomas Thomas Jr, thirty years later, which also has a triangular pediment.

By the 19th Century, the characteristic type of smaller wall monument, still Classical, is of pure white marble on a black backing panel, and most of the tablets in St Nicholas church are of this type.

Mrs Barbara Baron, d.1802, has a long inscription recording that ‘From [her] firm Base of TRUE CHRISTIAN FAITH / Sprung the glorious Superstructure of GOOD-WORKSs / And Afforded a rich Display of every SOCIAL, MORAL / And RELIGIOUS DUTY…’ The piece bears a carved Aladdin’s-lamp style wide funereal urn, and at the base is the family shield of arms. It is signed by a significant sculptor, John Bacon Junior, who a few years later completed the grand statue (designed by his more illustrious father) of King William III in St James Square. Bacon Jr has some monuments with figure sculpture elsewhere in old Middlesex churches, for example a mourning girl in Please mention Shepperton Matters when responding to adverts

Twickenham church, and two female figures in West Drayton, as well as in churches southwards across the Surrey border.

In St Nicholas Church, we have one little carved figure, indeed a whole miniature scene, on the panel to Sarah Chapman, d.1831 – with a nicely draped Classical female resting against a tomb with pot on top; she holds an upturned torch, symbol of life snuffed out, and we see a dying tree in front of her, and a snapped off trunk behind.

From the 1890s, the Arts and Crafts period brought a new type of more colourful and decorative monument, and St Nicholas church has a particularly fine one in the panel to Archibald Lord Blythswood, Lord of the Manor of Halliford, Middlesex (see below).

This splendid piece is carved from pinky-brown alabaster, a favourite material of the Arts and Crafts artists, with carved winged-cherub heads and foliage at the base, and mother-of-pearl flowers against deep blue in the corners, and a gilt shield of arms on the top.

I hope this short description has whetted your appetite for an exploration of the church once lockdown is a memory.

Bird Watching and Sea Eagles!

I noted your comment about Sea Eagles over Shepperton in the January edition. The Sea Eagles released by the Roy Dennis Foundation in the Isle of Wight ranged far and wide over the UK this summer, one even flew back to Scotland where it had been born!

I have also watched a male Sparrowhawk kill and eat a wood pigeon in my small garden, it must have ben very hungry to take on a bird so large!

Birdwatch magazine last year reported that one had been tracked (they all have satellite transmitters) over Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex and a verified report from Worcester Park in late April is an accepted record. I was in my lockdown garden in Thames Ditton on a Sunday in late April (sadly without binoculars) and we saw a very large bird which we thought was just a big buzzard to the south of us towards Worcester Park. Having read the report I am pretty confident that I did see a white-tailed sea eagle overhead on that Sunday in late April so the rumours are correct, we may see them again this coming summer!

Red Kites have been seen more and more frequently in this area but we seem to have lost our population of winter thrushes (redwings and fieldfares) which liked the trees near Manor Park and also the Shepperton Old Allotments. In the case of the latter they have stopped coming since buildings were allowed to be erected on the allotments.

My bird list for the Allotments also includes Brambling, a Chaffinch-like rarity more normally seen in rural areas.

Birdwatching is alive and kicking in Shepperton!

Finally, a note from the editor.

A lady was spotted watching some birds on the fields at Home Farm on the Shepperton Road. When asked, she said she was watching Tundra Bean Geese. These birds breed in northern Siberia and winters in Asia. So what is it doing in Shepperton? Well it likes wetlands and stops off most winters in places like WWT Slimbridge, Gloucestershire and the Holkam Marshes in Norfolk. But it is clearly not a regular to Spelthorne...Not yet anyway.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !.... I think .. Says Carl Phillips and Shepperton Residents Association SO, Christmas has gone. We have taken down the Christmas trees in the High Street (thank you Nigel!) which is always a sad occasion.

Also, I must say Many Thanks to Ahmed and his family at Thames Launderette & Dry Cleaning for keeping the BIG TREE lights glowing during the festive period, in between the showers! Thanks! We appreciate you Ahmed.

The New Year is upon us - with all the weight of Covid-19 and the Lockdowns frenzy.

What are we/you going to do? Keep to your Bubbles and think positively, as much as you can, even through the cases of sadness. Keep up the fitness regimes, WALKING in particular and try to avoid all those clad in Lycra on two wheels!!... It seems that it is you that will have to do the avoiding. They don't seem to know how!

Just as important - yes, you guessed it - Keep Shopping Local - in your local High Street.

Boris will be happy. We will be happy. And they (the shops) will be even happier!

The supermarkets, chemists, opticians, Yags and Nish at the Newsagents, florists, butchers, bakers and greengrocers have all kept going through these tough times, as has our fabulous Homecare shop further up the street. They all deserve our loyalty.

However, don't forget the shops like BLUE (fashions), where Donna has her Click 'n Collect service running during lockdown. And places like Shepperton Sports, John at Shepperton Carpets, Felicitations and all our Hairdressers and Beauty salons. They haven't been so lucky with the lockdown rules. They will be looking to us all when finally allowed to open their doors Keep all this in mind for that day !

Obviously our thoughts will also go out to our hospitality businesses - the pubs, restaurants and the cafes - we have their takeaways but we wait for their re-opening hours with relish!

In the meantime, Keep healthy and FIT … Walk the dog to a standstill and above all …..

Sunbury & Shepperton Local History Society Marks 70 Years

By Monica Chard It was 1950 when Terrick Fitzhugh started a couple of projects. His hobby was historical research and he had decided to write a history of Shepperton, at the same time as considering starting a magazine for fellow history enthusiasts. It was while he was mulling these projects over, that the idea of a history group started to take shape.

His research started amongst fellow history buffs, sounding them out as to their interest in such a group and was very encouraged by the response.

One respondent, a Major Tapp, offered his large living room in Ivy House, French Street, Sunbury, as a venue for an initial meeting and 18 people attended. Sitting comfortably in armchairs and sofas, the group decided that there was enough interest to get a group going. A follow up meeting was held on February 8th 1951, where a constitution was ratified and rules set and the Sunbury & Shepperton Local History Society was duly born.

There were a number of venues used in the early days, members ideally wanting to alternate between Sunbury and Shepperton as an all inclusive approach. Shepperton Rectory was used, as was Sunbury Conservative Club. The Upper Halliford Welfare Centre offered a half way house between the two villages, but was ultimately impractical for everyone. So finally the Society began regular meetings at the newly built Sunbury Grammar School (now Sunbury Manor). Thus it remained for some years before moving to Sunbury Library.

For the past 35 years, meetings have been held at Halliford School in the smart auditorium which lends itself perfectly to the burgeoning group.

The committee, with Fitzhugh as Chairman and Major Tapp as Vice Chair, put together a programme of talks during winter months, with visiting speakers. In the summer months, outings were organised to places of historical interest. During the year a few exhibitions were put on and the group started producing a regular journal for members. A relatively young member remembers being invited to join the committee in the early 1960’s.

Caring for the Community is proving a challenge under Covid

For nearly twelve months now the pandemic that has engulfed the world has disrupted everyone’s lives. And I do mean everyone’s. From major national and international events through to special birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and wakes, all have had to pass by without the hint of a proper memorable celebration.

Not being able to meet safely with our fellow human beings to celebrate or mark major life milestones has been heart-breaking for many. Even just meeting with friends or relatives for a coffee in a café or a beer or glass of wine in a local pub has been off limits for so long.

Part of being a Rotarian is the enjoyment of meeting regularly with like-minded, generous, caring people who wish to do good. Prior to the lockdown, if you had popped into the Holiday Inn in Shepperton, either on a Monday evening or a Wednesday morning you would have found fifty or so dedicated and sociable, local residents who loved meeting either for dinner or a cooked breakfast. A meal has always been a key focus of Rotary get togethers before we then go on to the business of discussing and planning our next fundraising or social event.

There is nothing Rotarians love more than putting on a range of events, bringing friends together, having a good time and, most importantly, raising funds for good causes.

Both the Shepperton Aurora Club and the Shepperton and Sunbury Club, over many decades have raised huge sums of money to help needy causes throughout the world and, more importantly, locally right here in Shepperton and Sunbury.

When Covid 19 came along, the breakfasts and evening meal meetings had to stop, but it didn’t stop the members of both clubs continuing their good work.

Still meeting via Zoom and Skype on a weekly basis, both clubs have managed to raise vital funds in the tens of thousands of pounds and have focussed very much on helping local good ...

SHEPPERTON PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP The PPG in Shepperton is adjusting to the constraints on meeting by using Zoom sessions, well attended by almost all its computer-savvy members, who include the Practice Manager. In midJanuary, with 14 “present”, the emphasis was naturally on the roll-out of the vaccination; several members are indeed over 80, so that some had already received their notification, or even their jab. The Practice Manager, Caroline Self, is eager to provide as much support as possible to people isolated from normal social contacts; now, our Group includes not only a highly skilled IT member, Sue Bryer, but also people involved in support networks, notably Andy Anderson, whose work with cancer victims has equipped him with the social skills required. He is not alone in this, which permits the Group to assist the Practice in this new activity.

The Festival of Britain 1951

Some readers, may recall with nostalgia the Festival of Britain, perhaps attending the main events at the South Bank London, or going to the funfair at Battersea. It was in 1951, just six years after the end of World War Two, that the event was held to celebrate the British contribution to civilization, past, present and future, in the arts, science and technology, and industrial design. Much of the city still lay in ruins after the war, and models of redevelopment were needed. The Festival was an attempt to give the country a feeling of recovery and progress. The Festival of Britain described itself as “One act of national reassessment and one corporate reaffirmation of faith in the nation’s future”.

The first idea for an exhibition came from The Royal Society of Arts in 1943, which considered that a celebration should be held to commemorate the centenary of the 1851 Great Exhibition. Funded mostly by the government with a budget of £12 million, in 1947, cabinet member Herbert Morrison took charge, and a planning council was established. The main site was constructed on a 27 acre plot on the South Bank of the Thames in Lambeth, which had been left untouched since being bombed in the war. Old Victorian buildings and railway sidings were transformed into the new site.

Following an official opening by King George V1, the festival opened for the public on the 4th May. The centre piece was the recently built Royal Festival Hall. The main ground site featured the largest dome in the world at the time, standing 93 feet tall, with a diameter of 365 feet. This held displays on the theme of discovery such as The New World, Polar Regions, The Sky, Outer Space, The Living, and The Physical World. shaped steel tower supported by cables. There was the Tele cinema, which showed films in 3D, and other displays to be seen were The People of Britain, Homes and Gardens, Health, Sport, and The Seaside. The event showcased the principles of urban design that would feature in the creation of new towns. Other exhibits included The Land of Britain, The Natural Scene, Power and Production, and Transport. A Festival of Science, was held at the Science museum Kensington, and a Festival of Architecture at the Lansbury Estate in Poplar.

The Pleasure Gardens Battersea, were created a few miles from the festivals main ground.

This included an amusement park, a miniature railway, foaming fountains, a wine garden, a pavilion with a stage, and an amphitheatre, seating 1,250 people, which was later changed into a circus. The Battersea Funfair closed in the mid 1970’s. Although the main site was in the capital, events were also held nationwide, including an Industrial Power presentation in Glasgow, and the Ulster Farm and Factory Fair in Belfast. Throughout the summer months, the ship Campania toured the coast of Britain with a smaller representation of the festival experience.

The occasion had been a success, and there were over eight million visitors to the South Bank during a period of five months. At the closing ceremony in September, massed bands of the Brigade of Guards played as the Union, and Festival flags were taken down for the last time. The 2,900 seat Royal Festival Hall, is the only feature to remain from the festival and is now a Grade 1 listed building.

It is still hosting concerts and other events to this day, and is an enduring reminder of the events that were held beside the Thames in that bygone summer of 1951.

Recipe of the Month Healthy Seedy Crackers

A couple of years ago my brother sent me some of his home baked crackers all the way from A couple New Zealand! It was worth it. Heat the oven to 170C (fan) *psyllium Mix all dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Measure 2 cups (200g) of the seed mix and put into a second bowl (save themilled rest of the mix for another time) flax

Add 250ml water and the oil to the bowl and leave to stand for 10 minutes. You may think initially it looks FAR too wet, but trust me. It will be fine. The mix will gel together after a while.

Line a baking sheet withHeat parchment then tip the mix onto it. Placethe a second sheet of parchment o on top and ease the mixture out to the sides. Use a rolling pinall to achieve an even thickness Mix dry (about 5mm). Remove the top parchment. Bake for 40 –45 minutes in the middle of the a seco oven until crisp (you caninto pop in for a while longer if needed to dry further on a low heat). Allow to cool and then cut or break up. Delicious with cheese or just by themselves!

Dog Walkers Need to Respect Public Spaces

I am a dog owner. During these lockdowns, I have been immensely grateful both for the company, but also the excuse to get out and walk around the local area. We live in an area blessed with some great open spaces, and lockdown restrictions have meant that some spaces which we don’t normally walk around, are ‘available’. One such open space is Sunbury Golf Course. I have been reminded many times that the paths around the course, although public, don’t normally represent a safe space to walk, as golf balls tend to have a mind of their own. So, it is not an ideal place to walk anyway. But with no errant golf balls, because no one is allowed to play golf, it has offered a beautiful place to walk.

Gerry Marsden & the Local connection You may have read in the press and on social media that pop musician Gerry Marsden died on 3rd January.

His group ‘Gerry and the Pacemakers’ was founded in 1959 and were at one time almost as famous as their contemporaries and fellow Liverpudlians The Beatles. Their songs included ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ and a cover of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ (from the musical ‘Carousel’), the latter of course became the anthem of Liverpool FC. Given his strong identification with Liverpool, it may come as a surprise that at one time Gerry lived in Sunbury. He bought Springfield House in Springfield Grove (off Green Street, near St. Ignatius church) from another pop superstar, Tom Jones, who had moved there from Manygate Lane, Shepperton in 1967. Apparently a well-known singer of an earlier era, Dickie Valentine, previously lived at the same house after moving from Sunmead Cottage in Green Street. Guide Dogs Appeal for Volunteers in Spelthorne The local branch of charity Guide Dogs, which organises community events and collections to help raise much needed funds, is urgently looking for new volunteers in Spelthorne.

The charity relies on donations to keep its vital services running and has suffered with the impact of Covid-19 putting a dent in much of their face to face activities over the summer.

Guide Dogs has local fundraising groups all across the country. This means that people can volunteer in their local communities and make a difference, while getting involved with a fun and positive group. While lots of activity is still happening online, some groups are able to get out and about in market stalls by following the charity’s Covid-safe guidelines.

Nadia, a current Guide Dogs volunteer fundraiser, says: “I am a guide dog owner and I have also been a volunteer speaker and fundraiser for guide dogs for the last two years. Having my guide dog has been transformative to my life and being given the opportunity to share my story with others has given me the chance to give a little bit back to the charity that has helped me so much.

Being partnered with my guide dog has empowered me and enriched my life and the same can be said for being a volunteer. Through volunteering for Guide Dogs, I have had the opportunity to strengthen the skills I already have and meet lots of brilliant people who have now become friends.

I have had the chance to appear on a radio show and be part of an exhibition in a local museum.

Knowing that whatever little I can do can ultimately help to transform someone else who has a visual impairment, means a lot to me. I highly recommend volunteering to anyone who is interested.”

There are around 2 million people living with sight loss in the UK. Guide Dogs supports people with a visual impairment to maintain their independence and live the life they choose. There are lots of different services on offer, ranging from the iconic guide dog service, through to children and young people’s services, access to technology, and volunteer-led services such as My Sighted Guide (a twolegged guide rather than a four legged one!)

Message from Your Mayor

Well Christmas has passed and we got the answer to “will we, or won't we get together”. It is sad that we are now suffering the consequences. But hey! The jab has arrived to Spelthorne to give us all some hope for the future. It is great that Shepperton is now vaccinating.

I would like to pay tribute to the Jubilee food bank, Sunbury food bank and also the Aurora and Sunbury Rotary clubs for their stalwart efforts to assist families who are finding it difficult to make ends meet.

When I was asked to select a Christmas card to send out on behalf of the Mayor, I thought it would be good to select a local theme. Last year I was invited onboard a Dunkirk Little Ship, NYDIA, owned by local craftsman Malcolm Jones of Sunbury (see left). I was so impressed by the quality of workmanship, I decided to feature it on the Christmas Card. He is in the process of restoring another Dunkirk Little Ship, so if you have the chance, take a look at the workmanship.

While visiting the chemist in Shepperton recently, I noticed two ladies in yellow jackets picking up litter in the High Street. As I have made litter picking an activity to support in my mayoral year, I went over to greet them and thank them for their efforts. They told me that they were simply out for a walk for exercise, so why not make themselves useful. I normally present children with a certificate signed by the Mayor to thank them for their litter picking efforts. In this case I hope a picture in Shepperton Matters will suffice.

COUNTY ISSUES Richard Walsh - Councillor, Surrey County Council Firstly may I wish everybody a Happy New Year in these very difficult times and assure them that both Surrey County Council and Spelthorne Borough Council, together with their partners, are doing everything we can to help the community deal with the pandemic through services that both councils are able to offer.

Also, this year 2021 there will be a County Council election in Surrey. I was first elected as your County Councillor for the Shepperton, Laleham and Charlton Village division in 2009 and now, after three terms (12 years), I have decided to retire.

I would like to thank all those who have helped me during my years as a councillor at Surrey and I hope I have been able to make a positive contribution to the life and wellbeing of residents within the division I have represented. I send my warmest wishes to all for the future.

By Inspector Maxine Cilia The past month has seen a decrease in dwelling burglaries however, on the other hand, an increase in vehicle crime. The main types of vehicle crime we are seeing are the theft of catalytic Converters. This crime takes only about a minute to Inspector Cilia commit and usually the offenders are well prepared with grinders and car jacks to remove the Catalytic converter in seconds. This is made easier on certain vehicles due to design. However it can be made more difficult for all vehicles if you try to do just a few things.; If you have a garage please consider parking your vehicle in it. In order to steal the catalytic converter suspects need to slide under a Jack and gain access to the underneath of the car, so park next to a wall or prickly bush or high kerb. You could consider getting a cage system or locking system installed to prevent the theft . These can be an expense but stops your car from being written off due to value. Consider getting a recording doorbell device or CCTV to guard your property and vehicle especially if you can park on the drive and park in well-lit areas. If you are a business and have a set of Fleet vehicles consider parking them close together with the ones with the lowest ground clearance on the outside.

These have been noticeable in busy supermarkets and shops and usually go missing just after the person has paid for their shopping and are busy packing and unloading into the car. Please always keep you purse or wallet in an inside pocket of your jacket, or in a zipped bag. In many occasions the purses have contained credit cards and bank cards which have been used almost immediately. Consider whether something like a purse bell could be a deterrent allowing you to hear if your purse is moved.

Gardening Matters Heavenly Hellebores I fell in love with Hellebores a few years ago after an early spring visit to the Botanical Gardens in Cambridge where there are some beautiful displays. They provide a spring garden with elegant colour, and I admit to being quite excited when they appear.

They are poisonous plants so are probably best avoided if you have young children.

They have a somewhat magical history. A mythological physician named Melampus was said to have observed the cathartic effect of hellebore on goats who munched on the plants. Melampus allegedly then used the milk of the same goats to cure the daughters of the King of Argos of their madness. The plant was used for its purgative properties into the Middle Ages and beyond.

Personally, I would recommend growing them only for their attractiveness!

The original species originated in the northern parts of Greece and Turkey, but they grow incredibly well in British gardens. Then I heard Alan Titchmarsh’s advice to carefully cut the large fingered leaves from the plant at ground level in January, taking care not to damage the buds. This somewhat brutal treatment has worked a treat and my hellebores are now flourishing.

There are many varieties of hellebore, with single or double flowers. Just note that not all of them are easy to grow. I have struggled to get the Christmas Rose Helleborus niger to survive, never mind flower, but I’ve had much more success with the Green hellebore, Helleborus viridis, the pretty pink Lenten rose Helleborus x hybridus, which self-seeds quite nicely, and also the Helleborus x hybridus Ashwood Garden hybrids, which come in a variety of colours but don’t seem to self-seed as freely, at least in my garden.

Dig in plenty of mushroom compost before planting, and mulch after you’ve cut the leaves off. Dust with a blood, bone and fishmeal mix after flowering and mulch again with well-rotted leaf mould or compost. Dig up any small self-seeded plants and use them as gifts, or to increase your own colony.
