Gerry Marsden & the Sunbury connection You may have read in the press and on social media that pop musician Gerry Marsden died on 3rd January.

His group ‘Gerry and the Pacemakers’ was founded in 1959 and were at one time almost as famous as their contemporaries and fellow Liverpudlians The Beatles. Their songs included ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ and a cover of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ (from the musical ‘Carousel’), the latter of course became the anthem of Liverpool FC. Given his strong identification with Liverpool, it may come as a surprise that at one time Gerry lived in Sunbury. He bought Springfield House in Springfield Grove (off Green Street, near St. Ignatius church) from another pop superstar, Tom Jones, who had moved there from Manygate Lane, Shepperton in 1967. Apparently a well-known singer of an earlier era, Dickie Valentine, previously lived at the same house after moving from Sunmead Cottage in Green Street. We don’t need to tell you how much pressure we are under at the NHS. Thankfully we have the support of a great team of volunteers, but we need more. Join this highly valued team and help us.

You need to be able to commit to a minimum 4 hours per week on a regular basis, but that could be once a month, or you can do a few days a week. All we ask for is a regular commitment, however big or small.

We provide FREE parking!

Have you been furloughed?

Are you in a low risk age bracket/health?

Tasks are varied. We need volunteers to help patients and families connect via Facetime and WhatsApp. We also need runners, to get things from A to B. This will free up the medical staff who are so desperately needed elsewhere.

All staff, volunteers, outpatients and visitors have their temperature taken on every entry to the hospital and are provided with medical grade face masks daily.

We take safety extremely seriously.

NOS Cannisters. Growing Concern

There are growing concerns regarding the Nos tubes which appear all over the Borough. The Spelthorne Litter Pickers have drawn attention to the vast quantities they pick up on their litter picking outings. The good news is that Spelthorne Borough Council is taking an interest in the problem. Tom Onions is gathering information to establish how much of a problem it is and there is a public consultation underway. If you happen to come across a large amount of them please record the Day, Date, Time and Place you found them, any contributing evidence and collect the tubes. Tom's email address is: T.Onions@spelthorne.gov.uk. He asks that in no circumstances put yourself in harms way with the users of these tubes. Furthermore if you come across a large deposit of them (say in excess of 200) please make contact with Tom and he will arrange collection.

The public consultation is currently underway amongst residents to see if they support a Public Space Protection Order prohibiting the possession and use of new “legal highs” including NOS in our borough. This is your chance to have a say.

If you are in a priority group for a Covid vaccination ( the over 70s )and you haven’t had your vaccination yet, soon you will get a letter or a text with a date to attend a Vaccination Centre.

There are already Centres in Walton, Chertsey and Staines and more will be opening. If you are given an appointment at the regional Centre at Epsom Race Course remember that you can ask for an alternative Centre if you do not want to do the 60 mile round trip.

If you are over 70 and will have difficulty in getting to your Vaccination Centre as you do not have a car or people who can help,

The Story of a Child in Service - Signed books at Skinners

Dora Annie by Sunbury-on-Thames authors Patricia Stone and Brian Bone give an insight into a very different childhood.

Although written for children, it tells the story of Patricia’s grandmother (pictured right), starting out as a young girl and her tough but happy family life, who went to her first live-in job at the age of eight as a companion and helper to an unwell farmer’s wife.

It covers her adventures when she went into service at the age of fourteen as a Tweeny Maid, Nursery Maid and then finally a Ladies Maid, but it also focuses heavily on her home life, which is an intrinsic part of the narrative. ‘I am so lucky, thought Dora’. What an amazing insight into the life of a child in the late 1880’s. Today it is beyond belief that a child would be in work at the age of 8 but today we live in different times indeed!

“I loved my grandmother, and her extraordinary early life was so completely different from anyone nowadays that I found it fascinating. I’m sure others will feel the same,” comments Patricia.

Local mum walking 1.5 million steps for Fragile X Sunbury mum, Jackie Newman, has challenged herself to walk 1.5 million steps by Easter Sunday and as we wemt to print she had already surpassed 500,000 steps. She is aiming to raise £500 for The Fragile X Society. As an added bonus she is hoping also to lose another 10lb to reach her personal weight loss goal. She has already lost 35lb!

Fragile X Syndrome has had an immense impact on her family. It is a condition that most of us will never have heard of. Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic condition and is the most common inherited cause of learning disabilities. It affects around 1 in 4000 boys and men, as well as 1 in 8000 girls and women. It is genetic and Jackie and her sister are both carriers. Jackie’s son Matt has full mutation Fragile X syndrome and moderate learning difficulties. It is a complex condition with many side effects.

History of Plotland Dwelling

A book has recently been published which will be of immense interest to residents.

Plotlands of Shepperton by Stefan Szczelkun is a charming little book, focusing on the river communities of Shepperton, and a little on Sunbury. It puts into historical and social context how these riverside dwellings came about. Many of them have now been converted to luxury houses but they started out as anything but!

The 1920’s saw the arrival of the railways, which opened opportunities for weekend escapes from London to the country. At the same time it became possible to acquire riverside sites cheaply after the First World War. There were two reasons for this: Many landed estates were broken up when their owners were unable to pay increased death duties.

Many of the male heirs to the estates had been killed in the trenches. Secondly, there was a glut of cheap farmland available during the recession during the inter-war depression. As a result, there was a small boom in selfbuilding along the upper Thames. Residents frequently improvised, using whatever materials came to hand, some chose disused railway carriages or buses and some chose to buy chalets either constructed wholly on site, or bought as pre-fabricated flat packs delivered by barge from W.Gardam & Sons at Staines (see below).

Caring for the Community is proving a challenge under Covid For nearly twelve months now the pandemic that has engulfed the world has disrupted everyone’s lives. And I do mean everyone’s. From major national and international events through to special birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and wakes, all have had to pass by without the hint of a proper memorable celebration.

Not being able to meet safely with our fellow human beings to celebrate or mark major life milestones has been heart-breaking for many. Even just meeting with friends or relatives for a coffee in a café or a beer or glass of wine in a local pub has been off limits for so long.

Part of being a Rotarian is the enjoyment of meeting regularly with like-minded, generous, caring people who wish to do good. Prior to the lockdown, if you had popped into the Holiday Inn in Shepperton, either on a Monday evening or a Wednesday morning you would have found fifty or so dedicated and sociable, local residents who loved meeting either for dinner or a cooked breakfast. A meal has always been a key focus of Rotary get togethers before we then go on to the business of discussing and planning our next fundraising or social event.

There is nothing Rotarians love more than putting on a range of events, bringing friends together, having a good time and, most importantly, raising funds for good causes.

Both the Shepperton Aurora Club and the Shepperton and Sunbury Club, over many decades have raised huge sums of money to help needy causes throughout the world and, more importantly, locally right here in Shepperton and Sunbury.

When Covid 19 came along, the breakfasts and evening meal meetings had to stop, but it didn’t stop the members of both clubs continuing their good work.

Still meeting via Zoom and Skype on a weekly basis, both clubs have managed to raise vital funds in the tens of thousands of pounds and have focussed very much on helping local good

Since last March we have donated funds to help families in need identified through our local schools, assisted those with dementia and their carers, supported new mums, run art competitions for children and the elderly, supported those with housing needs and supplied literally hundreds of bags of food for our local food banks and provided them with financial help and support.

It takes a lot to stop determined Rotarians doing the good things they do – even a worldwide pandemic hasn’t done that.

However, we couldn’t do any of the things we’ve done with out your generous help and donations.

Phase 2 of Ceaser Court Development Not in Our Name!

The following is a press release from the Council:

A great deal of controversy attaches to the proposed Phase 2 development of Ceaser Court in Green Street. For the avoidance of doubt regarding the Association's position in relation to this proposal, the following statement was submitted by our Chairman to members of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee which met on 19th January by our Chairman:

"It has been brought to my attention that at an Overview & Scrutiny Committee meeting on 7th July, in response to questions relating to this development, and changes made since the original plans were produced, answers were given which stated that LoSRA (Lower Sunbury Residents Association) were supportive of both Phase 1 and Phase 2 proposals; also that LoSRA were supportive of the consultation exercise in May 2019.

"I wish to make it clear that LoSRA is not, and has never stated it is, supportive of this development. The fact that LoSRA has not thus far commented (and by inference not objected to it), cannot be construed as support.

"It is true to say that individual members of the LoSRA Committee attended the preapplication consultation in May 2019 in their private capacity but given that the Phase 2 development was very much an outline, and, at that stage, there was a possibility of space being allocated for Community use, it was felt that until a formal planning application was submitted, and the final design and use of the space in Phase 2 was determined, it was inappropriate to comment. Again, attendance cannot be construed as support.

"Now that the final design and disposition of the accommodation in Phase 2 has become clear, I am able to say that LoSRA does not support Phase 2 and endorses the many objections to it, in particular those representations submitted by [named residents] which clearly identify issues which must be addressed".

"In October 2020, Spelthorne Council announced that it intended to revise downward the housing needs figure for its new Local Plan, following heavy criticism of the Government’s original formula for calculating the number of new homes needed in local authority areas. This was derived from the Government’s plans to change the ‘standard methodology’ that resulted in a lower figure for Spelthorne in a recent consultation on changes to the current planning system. The Council learned on 16 December 2020 that the Government has now decided not to press ahead with the new methodology, which puts Spelthorne back to a higher housing need again.

"The formula that was consulted on would have seen Spelthorne’s number drop from 606 homes per year to 489, a figure that would mean we could have delivered a better Local Plan with fewer or zero Green Belt sites needed for residential development. To revert to the higher figure takes away this opportunity and leaves the Council with an extremely onerous number to try and meet.

"The decision to scrap the revised methodology seems to have stemmed from pressure by other local authorities in the south east who saw their numbers go up, detracting from the Government’s aim to ‘level up’ cities and districts in the north. Whilst other nearby authorities will welcome the news that their figure goes down again, Spelthorne is one of the areas that is back to where it started.

"Deputy Leader of the Council and Chair of the Local Plan Task Group, Cllr Jim McIlroy, said: “This announcement comes as a crushing disappointment after we made so much effort to lower our housing number, which we Continued on p 43

thought we achieved only to see it go up again. We are trying to prepare a Local Plan that our communities will endorse and whilst the 489 homes per year figure was still high we felt it was a significant improvement that meant we could take out many of the largest and most impactful sites that our residents don’t want to see developed for housing. We will fight the Government on this and push for what was promised – that housing delivery would be balanced across the country and not concentrated in areas like Spelthorne that are already heavily constrained by Green Belt, waterbodies and pressures on infrastructure. I have written to our MP, Kwasi Kwarteng, and will write to the Secretary of State at the Ministry for Homes, Communities and Local Government.”

We Must all Respect Public Spaces

I am a dog owner. During these lockdowns, I have been immensely grateful both for the company, but also the excuse to get out and walk around the local area. We live in an area blessed with some great open spaces, and lockdown restrictions have meant that some spaces which we don’t normally walk around, are ‘available’. One such open space is Sunbury Golf Course.

I have been reminded many times that the paths around the course, although public, don’t normally represent a safe space to walk, as golf balls tend to have a mind of their own.

So, it is not an ideal place to walk anyway. But with no errant golf balls, because no one is allowed to play golf, it has offered a beautiful place to walk.

But I was contacted by a reader recently and feel it is right to publish her comments: “Whilst walking my dog on Sunbury Golf Course I was ashamed to see a pile of poo bags left by dog walkers scattered around a golf bin. This is disgraceful and will get dog owners a bad name. Please take your dog poo home. Who do you think will clear this mess away?” I have to say, I entirely agree with this. The “bins” are not bins. These are not facilities for dog poo. If your dog fouls the course you need to be responsible, pick it up and dispose of it in public bins when you exit the course. THERE ARE NO POO BINS ON SUNBURY GOLF COURSE! There is a bin at Watersplash, and at the car park on Gaston Bridge Road. So please do the right thing, respect this space and dispose of dog poo responsibly. While you are at it, please take your rubbish home. Please don’t leave it on the golf course. Thank you!

Small garden birds need to eat regularly, particularly during cold weather when they use up a lot of energy just keeping themselves warm. So now is a great time to put out highenergy, nutritious bird foods containing fats and oils, which will help them maintain their energy levels through the cold winter nights.

It’s also great to have shrubs with berries in your garden, as birds love to feed on the berries and on insects found on berried plants.

Attractive shrubs like Cotoneaster and Pyracantha also provide shelter and nesting areas for birds. But berries are not just good for birds – hedgehogs, squirrels, mice, badgers and even foxes will all happily munch on them.
