echnology is a wonderful thing - until it all goes terribly wrong. We’ve all been there, those times when technology lets you down or you’ve just done something plain stupid using it.

As we know, if you need advice about any electronic mobile device, just ask a 6 year old, because really if you’re 40+ it can all get a little confusing, and actually, in the wrong hands, quite dangerous…especially when you are texting.

Texting is hard enough as it is – trying to get the right meaning of what you are saying and then the right emoji to go with what you’ve typed. But sometimes it looks like technology has gone a bit too far, like when our phones are supposed to know what we are thinking and try to anticipate our words. This can be dangerous. Take for example this conversation between mother and son.

Mum: “Everything ok? Haven’t heard from you in a few days?

Son: “Yeah, sorry ma. I just came out of the closet.

Mum: (Shocked face emoji) “Oh Matthew! Wow. Goodness me. Well, that is great. I always had a hunch. I love you no matter what. So does your father.”

Son: “I’m not gay!” I meant coming out of the clinic. Autocorrect!!!!!

Mum: Oh I see.

Son: “Never mind oh I see - the real issue here is you think I am gay !!!”

It’s not just phones and texting that get us Technophobe’s in a muddle. A friend of mine who works for an IT helpdesk, was on the phone to a customer who was struggling with her emails.

The customer rang the helpline and said “I’m struggling to send my emails. Can you help me?”. “Yes of course, what seems to be the problem?”. “It keeps saying undeliverable your message couldn’t be delivered”.

“Ok, what address are you trying to email?”.

“101 London Street, London, England”. “That’s the postal address!” “ I know! It won’t send!!”

Meanwhile, Catherine the Great loved Golden Pippin apples so much she had them brought over to her palace in Russia, each one wrapped in real silver paper.

Queen Victoria was also a fan – she particularly liked baked apples. A canny Victorian nurseryman called Lane named a variety ‘Lane’s Prince Albert.’

hen we moved house about four years ago there were two trees in the back garden which had been chopped right down. However during these past four years they have gradually grown back and so this year when one of them produced a large crop of apples, not eating apples but great cooking apples, I was over the moon. So after sending my husband up a ladder to pick them all, I was delighted with the large basketful they produced. The problem now was, what on earth do I do with them all. I’m sure I cannot be the only one who ends up with a ton of apples they don’t know what to do with. Obvious-

My apple peeler. Although I enjoy baking and cooking there are some jobs that I really don’t enjoy and peeling is one of them. My apple peeler is amazing and makes a laborious job quick and easy as it peels and cores in one.

No excuse then you may think, yet three weeks down the line my apples are still in the basket. Now I know there are lots of things I could do with them, for example, apple cake, apple

crumble, apple pie etc, however there is only my husband and I and we are trying to ‘cut down’ at the moment. I had thought of canning them, which is something I still might do, so that I can use them throughout the year. I just need to purchase some large jars.

There’s always something holding me back. A few nights ago though I made a good old time favourite - Baked Apples. So simple and yet they were incredibly tasty, I had forgotten how good they were, I was impressed. They are great for this time of year too as they incorporate all those winter spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg.

Here is what I did. Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees. Core four large apples about 3/4 way down (you don’t even have to peel them). Mix together a handful of sultanas, 2 tbsp light brown sugar, 1tsp cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg and mix together.

Stuff each apple with some mixture. Place a knob of butter on the top of each and sprinkle some demerara sugar on top.

Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 20 minutes. Serve with some brandy cream. Delicious.

Oh and just so you know my husband and I don’t class this as a pudding, we class it as one of our ‘five a day’!!!

’m Rory, head jellyfish breeder! I’ve been breeding jellyfish for three years now and have recently taken the jump to go self employed into UK Jellyfish.

UK Jellyfish started off when I was trying to purchase my own pet jellyfish. I found that there was nobody in the UK selling them!

So I decided to start breeding my own. First I purchased 5 Jellyfish, those 5 quickly became 10, 20, 100, 1000 Jellyfish! I had no choice but to start selling them and as a result, we now ship the Jellyfish internationally and the desire for these creatures is only increasing!

All Jellyfish need to be kept in specialized aquariums because of their delicate structure. They need just the right amount of flow to keep them suspended in the water.

Tanks need to be formed so that there are no corners for the jellyfish to get trapped in.

Some jellyfish are immortal… It sounds crazy but there’s a species that actually makes itself young again and then repeats its life cycle, you could sell that to Dior! Jellyfish have been on Earth well before the dinosaurs were here. They don’t have a brain although some jellyfish have eyes and can process their surroundings reacting to obstacles. Truly amazing animals!

Most applicants get approved within minutes, however some applications can take several days to process so don’t wait until the last minute.

Fellwalking enthusiast Stephen Robson reflects on a labour of love which took forty years to achieve – completing all 214 Wainwright Fells.

magine the thrill of climbing a Lake District mountain for the first time. A lot of people would start with something short, small and fairly unchallenging – just to dip a toe in the water, so to speak, to see how they like it, before deciding whether to try something more demanding next time or to take up another hobby or interest instead.

Not so my new friend Caroline – she went straight for the big one. Caroline and her pal Claire had asked me to accompany them on a charity walk in Yorkshire, the three peaks to be exact. I have no knowledge of that area at all, so it seemed like a risky proposition.

Instead I suggested climbing to the very roof of England, Scafell Pike, in a region I knew well. Something in the wording of that appealed to them - the roof of England, conjouring images of a skyscraping summit piercing the clouds, an impressive concept to tell your friends about, both before and after.

The original date in late July was vetoed; the weather forecast for Borrowdale predicted a very wet day. Two weeks later in early August we were in business! The sun was shining, the tops were clear and we made an early start. How many times have I parked up on the road to Seathwaite farm, with the big mountains looming at the top of the valley, at the start of a day filled with adventure? Too many to remember! We soon reached Stockley Bridge, with its translucent blue shimmering pools, a perfect place to start a video record of the day. But would the girls speak on camera? I had a shrewd idea Caroline would; she seemed an enthusiastic talker, having chatted all the way to the starting point in the car.

Claire was a rather more unassuming girl, but to my delight both were happy to do so. It was quite amusing for me to quickly tell them where we were, what we were looking at, the names of the features in view, only for them to say “sorry, tell me that again” just before I pressed the video record button.

We arrived at Esk Hause, a walker’s crossroads, and struck up towards the Scafells, passing Great End and

heading for the stony wastelands of Ill Crag, Broad Crag and the Pike itself, of course. For Caroline this was a different world- one composed of huge jagged boulders and swirling clouds- dramatic views of surrounding peaks towering up and many, many walkers - all toiling upwards towards the ultimate goal.

Claire didn’t particularly relish the rocky terrain - but Caroline loved it, although the gradients sometimes knocked the stuffing out of her. In a while we were approaching the summit, the clouds unfortunately obscuring the view. It was so busy we forgot to video the top of the Pike- the very reason we chose the tallest mountain!

We descended to Lingmell (or Lingbo, as Claire rechristened it!), for lunch. It was quieter and enjoys a terrific view across to Great Gable, rising starkly opposite.

The wind noise took the edge off a lovely little speech that Caroline made about the Charlie Mortimer fund, the charity the girls were collecting for. Then we set off down along the corridor route back to Sty Head. This passes the most impressive gorge in the Lake District, Piers Gill. There were scores of walkers heading along Broad Crag col as we looked up, a succession of ants on the skyline! We also got mixed up in a fell race.
