“Paws” to Celebrate Dr. Seuss at Village Elementary One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish; The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham are a just a few classics read to a captive audience of five, furry, four-‐legged friends at Village Elementary.

!

On Thursday, March 2nd students and teachers at Village Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday by inviting five Canine Assisted Therapy (C.A.T.) dogs to our campus to enjoy the sounds of rhythm and rhyme gleaned from Seuss’ classics artistically, articulated by our first-‐grade students. Celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday has always been met with enjoyment by both staff and students here at Village. Each year the event is commemorated with a week, long bevvy of activities to include a school-‐wide read-‐aloud initiative, the annual door decorating contest and the culminating Spirit Friday event: “Dress-‐like-‐a-‐ Seuss character”. This year, however, Village’s Literacy Coach, Ms. Carol Camirand coordinated a unique occasion for our first graders to receive books and to interact with a captive audience of four-‐legged friends. Kimarea Giddings from Reading is Fundamental in conjunction with the Canine Assisted Therapy dog team consisting of four Golden Retrievers named: Brandy, Sebastian, Coral and Lexie and one Cairn Terrier named Scruffy provided a full morning of celebration and fun for our first-‐grade students. Each child received a free, self-‐selected book with a coordinating Dr. Seuss pencil and bookmark to underscore the value of reading and the enjoyment a love for reading brings to our lives. Village’s Literacy Coach, Carol Camirand stated, “To see their little faces light up and to watch them interact with the furry friends was well worth the effort! To experience this level of enjoyment was simply remarkable and the Village family intends to replicate this initiative on a broader scale each year for years to come!

School Uniform Policy Village Elementary School continues to be a mandatory uniform school. Uniforms have had a positive impact on issues such as peer pressure, classroom discipline, student safety and bullying. Uniform colors will remain red, white and black with black or khaki pants, shorts, skirts or skorts. It is mandatory that students wear polo shirts with our school’s logo. Please see front office staff for logo information. Students must wear uniforms on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, but on Fridays, students can wear their Village Panther T-‐Shirts or their favorite outfit, as long as the District Dress Code is being followed (all shirts must have sleeves and no skin can be exposed; no “short-‐shorts,” mini skirts or midriffs). Also they can dress according to the designated school spirit day. For example, one Friday was “Pink Day,” students wore pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students are required to wear their red uniform shirts or red Panther Shirts for field trips. At all times, students must wear closed-‐toed shoes with rubber bottoms and covered heels—no sandals or flip-‐flops. Remember our school uniform colors are red, white, black and khaki. Only these colors will be considered in accordance with the uniform policy. NOTE: Students in the S.T.A.M.P. Program will follow their uniform schedule.
