BREAK THE ICE WITH HAWWA
by Razzle Dazzle
6
Our very first member to be featured in Break the Ice is First Officer, Hawwa Thaufeeq from Villa Air.
How would you like people to perceive you?
I would like people to perceive me as a kind person as I want them to feel more comfortable around me.
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I am mostly a night owl, but it depends on what my schedule is like.
What’s your instant mood changer?
Coffee and rain are the best combo for me.
During your free time, what do you like to do most?
I like to go out and get some fresh air or watch a documentary or a movie.
Do you have any pets? If so, enlighten us about them. I don’t have any pets, but I would love to have a small aquarium with jellyfish in it. I’m not sure if they would be considered pets though.
What’s on your movie/series watchlist right now?
I have a lot of movies and series on my watchlist, including movies, “The Bad Seed,” “Don’t Worry Darling,” “Force Majeure,” “The Square,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and series, “Black Bird” (on Apple TV+), “About Fate” (on Amazon), and “Amazing Stories” (on Apple TV+). My go-to genres are true crime, thriller, and sci-fi.
Which song is on top of your playlist?
The song on top of my playlist is Sam Smith’s “Not the Only One.”
What are the go-to apps on your phone?
My go-to apps on my phone are Instagram and Twitter.
Who is your role model/mentor, and why?
My mom is my mentor. Her story is that of a girl who had to survive on her own since she was three years old. She raised her daughters to be independent and brave, and most importantly, she taught us to be kind, no matter how hard life gets. She’s my role model and my world.
What’s the most daring or exciting thing you’ve ever done in your life?
The most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my life is solo flights which I did during pilot training courses.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?
If I could have a superpower, it would be time travel since time is limited for us human beings.
What’s your favorite type of cuisine or food to indulge in?
I am a foodie, so I love all kinds of food. If I had to choose, I think I would pick Thai or Indian because I love spicy food.
What type of gift do you prefer most?
E.g. personalized photo frames.
I don’t mind any gifts because, for me, it’s the thought that counts.
What item do you always carry with you?
I always carry my phone and house keys with me.
Do you have a favorite quote/saying that you use for inspiration or motivation?
I’ve read some deathbed confessions, and most of those people regret spending less time with their loved ones and that they were too invested in their jobs/businesses. Life is too short to worry about materialistic stuff, and life is unpredictable as well. Therefore, for me, the most important thing is to spend quality time with my loved ones.
If you were to write your biography, what would be the title?
I haven’t thought about it. Maybe just my name with my favorite quote “It costs nothing to be kind to each other.”
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your life so far that you would like to share?
Be brave enough to let go off things that don’t bring you inner peace and happiness, because life is short so why waste time? Also, have faith in yourself and Almighty Allah, that good things will come your way if you are patient, kind, and making Dua.
What’s on your bucket list?
I have quite a lot on my bucket list. Some of them include skydiving, bungee jumping, parasailing, flying in a helicopter, and visiting a movie set.

CHIANG RAI
by Bubbles
Are you looking for a new travel destination that’s off the beaten path? Well, look no further than Chiang Rai! This small, amiable city in Thailand offers a unique blend of culture, relaxation, and adventure that will leave you feeling refreshed and revitalized.
Upon arriving in Chiang Rai, I was immediately struck by the city’s calm atmosphere. Unlike some of the more popular tourist destinations I’m used to visiting, the streets were uncrowded, and traffic was minimal. This made it incredibly easy to get around and explore everything the city has to offer.
BLUE TEMPLE
While it may not be as established as its white counterpart, the Blue Temple’s modern design and gold embellishments were simply breathtaking. And unlike the crowded White Temple, I was able to take my time and fully appreciate the beauty of the Blue Temple without feeling rushed. If you have the chance to visit the blue temple, don’t miss out on the opportunity to taste the special ice cream that was inspired by the temple. The ice cream is made of coconut and served with sticky rice, which creates a unique and delicious combination.
BAN DAM
WHITE TEMPLE
One of the first places I visited was the White Temple or Wat Rong Khun. The intricate details of the temple’s architecture were like nothing I had ever seen before, and I could have spent hours admiring the craftsmanship.
While in Chiang Rai, I also made a point to visit Baan Dam, a collection of modern buildings created by artist, Thawan Duchanee. While some visitors may not appreciate the abstract art, I found the experience to be intriguing and unique. And with plenty of spots for great Instagram photos, it’s definitely worth a visit.
8
SINGHA PARK
Singha Park stole my heart as the most incredible spot in Chiang Rai. This enchanting park is a one-stop destination that offers an extensive range of exciting activities, such as feeding swans and fishes in the lake, exploring the scenic tea plantations, visiting a mini zoo, and experiencing thrilling ATV rides. My partner and I decided to rent a buggy and roam around the park at our own pace, which turned out to be an unforgettable experience. With various coffee spots and stunning photo opportunities available, we were able to immerse ourselves in the park’s charm and beauty, appreciating every moment spent there.
9
THE ULTIMATE CAFE HOPPING EXPERIENCE IN CHIANG RAI
CAFÉ LALITA
Lalita is currently one of the trendiest destinations for tourists, boasting a mesmerizing mini waterfall and exceptional interiors that are hard to miss. Without a doubt, it’s one of the most sought-after hotspots in Chiang Rai.
CAFÉ LISTA
I cannot recommend this café enough! However, keep in mind that it is only suitable for breakfast, as they do not serve any heavy dishes proper for lunch or dinner. Nevertheless, this café is situated amidst a scenic rice field in Chiang Rai, offering a breathtaking view of the lush forests. The interior of the café is simply beautiful, with every corner boasting an Instagram-worthy charm that is irresistible.
MELT IN YOUR MOUTH CAFÉ
The ambiance of this café is unlike any other I’ve ever visited, and the food is nothing short of spectacular, complemented by top-notch service. If you’re ever in the area, make sure to try their signature Thai latte, and indulge in their mouthwatering margherita pizza; they are both out-of-thisworld delicious. Additionally, the café offers a range of delectable desserts and other food options, providing something for everyone to enjoy.

Chasing Dreams Featuring Lamsa Shiyam
by Shadha
For the first Issue of Villa Vibes’ Chasing Dreams, we are delighted to introduce Lamsa Shiyam, a.k.a. Lammi, from Villa Resorts, Marketing Team as we dive through her divine passion for makeup and her impressive journey as a Makeup Artist.
For as early as she could recall, Lammi has always been a makeup fanatic, dolling up and glam ups were always on top of the list of the things that made her light up with excitement.
During her early teenage years, Lammi began to discover her passion for makeup even more as she would create makeup looks for her friends and close family members.
As her parents started to notice her growing fondness for makeup along with her impressive talent at such a ripe age, they decided to invest in high-quality makeup products and tools that Lammi needed to enhance her skills. She describes her parents’ continuous support as the biggest drive that led her to kick-start her journey as an aspiring makeup artist.
Now let’s get into some exciting questions and answers with Lammi!

levre.mv
Can you share with us how Levre.mv started?
Through word of mouth from my first client, I started getting more and more customers. Therefore, I decided to start a page on Instagram in 2018, right after my A-levels with the name ‘Levre.mv’. To feed your curiosity, “Levre” refers to pout lips in French! The first post I shared was a collaboration with one of the finest and most famous models from Maldives, Hanaan Rasheed and Inasha (Kween), and a professional photographer. This collab helped me gain followers and likes for my page and I consecutively started gaining more clients. Within a few weeks, I had 4-5 clients a week which was a huge accomplishment for me at only age 18.
Have you done any courses or do you have any prior experience as a makeup artist?
Yes! I work as a freelance hijab stylist at Coco Chic. I did a hijab styling course a few years back and it has been helpful as my hijab clients find it a hassle to get makeup and hijab styling done at two different venues. Not only do I provide makeup services to my clients, but I also offer simple and elegant hair-styling options. While I haven’t undergone any formal makeup-artistry training, I take great pride in honing my skills and techniques through years of practice. Even now, I continue to explore new methods and expand my skill set to refine my craft and deliver the best possible experience to my clients.
Did you ever think of pursuing makeup as a full-time career, or do you wish to do it in the future?
As it had always been a dream and target for me to work in the marketing industry, I wanted to obtain work experience in the given field. Therefore, I was never able to fully focus on just doing makeup as a profession. While I was working, I also did makeup for my colleagues on request, and I still take clients as much as time allowed. As a prospective full-time makeup artist, I’m all in! However, I’m also deeply passionate about my current career in marketing. Balancing the two can be challenging, but I view it as an opportunity to apply my marketing skill if I choose to become an entrepreneur in the future. After all, effective marketing is the backbone of any successful business venture. For the time being, I plan to continue working in the resort sector as a marketer for the next few years, as I thoroughly enjoy my job.

before after
What was the most challenging look you created and the look you’re most proud of?
There is a sort of a gothic look on my page which I created some time back. It became a little challenging for me as I had to create a very symmetrical double eyeliner look which was something that needed a lot of concentration and patience. As for the look, I am proudest of, it has to be my wedding make up which I did on my own. I was extremely satisfied with it, and it lasted all evening, and I received multiple compliments on my look.

▶ Always research your skin type and good skincare products as makeup would look better on well-maintained skin.
▶ A good base is always key. Make sure your skin is fully hydrated with your favorite moisturizer. I always make sure to have a good skin prep before applying any makeup products.
▶ I like to do makeup on clients in a way where their natural features are enhanced, and they do not end up not looking like themselves. The skin should always look like skin but better.
▶ Make sure you choose your shade wisely so that it would match your actual skin color and make your skin pop, as shades that may suit other people might not suit you.
▶ Practice makes perfect! Keep continuing and perfecting your makeup skills and you will see the improvement in the looks created.

Team Insider by Bubblegum
Meet the first ladies of Villa
At Villa Group, a plethora of teams thrive, and through the Team Insider segment, we aim to shine a light on their inspirational stories. In this edition, we start with a story that hasn’t been told before. It’s about three brave women who started their careers at Villa. They faced challenges, criticisms, and biases from society, but they didn’t let it stop them.
In a time when society frowned upon women in the workforce, Zunaira Hassan (Zuney), Sithlana Ali (Sithu), and Ikrisha Amjad (Ikury) defied societal norms by joining Villa Group in the years 1991-1992. They started their professional journeys at Villa as receptionists of the Villa Building, marking the beginning of their inspiring story.
Zuney was the first to join, followed by Sithu. A year later, Ikury joined as well, and together they formed a close friendship and a unique team that has remained strong throughout their lives. Reflecting on those early days, Sithu recounts with a nostalgic gleam in her eyes, “It was during that time when our chairman made the ground-breaking decision to hire women for the receptionist positions, a role previously filled exclusively by men. When my neighbor and dear friend, Zuney, applied for the vacancy, she informed me that they were still seeking another applicant to join. Intrigued by her description of the job opportunity and impressed by what I had learned about Villa, I decided to apply. Much to our delight, both Zuney and I were selected for the positions.”
In addition to the challenges, they met within the workplace, Zuney, Sithu, and Ikury also had to navigate the hurdles they faced during their daily commute. The very location of their workplace, situated in the market area, posed a significant obstacle as it was an area where women were traditionally discouraged from venturing. As they made their way to work each day, they had to endure the taunts and indecent comments hurled at them by a few individuals in the vicinity.
“When we were near to the office, people would mock us and subject us to hurtful remarks, attempting to humiliate us. The mere sight of women engaging in work was perceived as a disgrace by some.”, says Ikury remembering those uncomfortable moments.
Within the office, Zuney, Sithu, and Ikury were fortunate to be surrounded by colleagues who offered them immense respect, firm support, and valuable guidance, creating a nurturing environment for their professional growth.
16
Recognizing the difficulties the female Team Members came across in transportation, the company took a thoughtful step by providing bicycles to every one of them. This additional benefit was sincerely appreciated by the ladies. Ikury recalls with a smile, “When we received our bicycles, we didn’t even know how to ride them. But we gladly accepted these expensive gifts.” However, the usage of bicycles came with its own set of challenges. Bicycles being often lost after being parked became an ongoing issue. In response, their considerate colleagues even went as far as to provide them with sturdy chain locks for their bicycles. Despite these efforts, the bicycles continued to vanish. Ikury adds with laughter, “Bicycles kept disappearing so whenever a bicycle went missing, we simply purchased a new one, and the cycle continued.” The bicycle adventures were not without their share of mishaps. Zuney cheerfully recounts, “I even had a few bicycle accidents, but both Sithu and Ikury would come to my rescue, picking me up and ensuring I safely reached either the office or home.”
Their time working closely together was relatively short-lived. Zuney took on the responsibility of handling cashiering and reception, Sithu joined the launch section while Ikury transitioned to the shipping section. However, despite their new departmental assignments, the three women remained inseparable. Zuney explains, “In those days, regardless of working in different departments, we always arrived at work together and left together. If one of us had yet to finish our tasks, the others would patiently wait to ensure we could all go home together. Our homes were nearby, which made this routine even more convenient.”
Ramadan. It was a wonderful and a happy time for all of us, creating a powerful sense of togetherness.”
This amazing trio had many joyful and fun-filled moments during their time together. When asked about a memorable incident, Ikury eagerly shares a particular day when Zuney was expecting her first child. As Ikury recalls, “We always walked home together for lunch breaks. Sithu and I finished our meals and waited on the road for Zuney to join us to return to the office. However, as time went by, Zuney didn’t show up. Worried, we decided to visit her house, only to find out that she had given birth! It was unbelievable to think that Zuney calmly went about her day, joined us to go home for lunch as if nothing extraordinary was happening, and then quietly welcomed her baby into the world.” The laughter that fills the room as Ikury shares this story is a testament to the bond they had and the fun memories they created together.
Let’s now dive into the individual experiences of each of the members of this trio, as well as learn more about them.
The teamwork and harmony among the Team Members during that time had a profound impact on the women. They remember how their colleagues would unite and arrange different ceremonies and get-togethers. Zuney recalls, “We would receive invitations to our colleagues’ homes for Maahefun and Iftar. These iftar gatherings would happen throughout the whole month of
17
Zuney
Zuney, who joined Villa on 3rd September 1991, has had the opportunity to explore various roles and areas within the company. However, her most cherished moments have been the times she got to work directly with the Chairman. Zuney reflects, “Those are my happiest moments.” Due to her dedication and diligence, she was entrusted with administrative tasks directly related to the Chairman, a responsibility she takes great pride in. Throughout her impressive 30-plusyear tenure at Villa, Zuney has kept an impeccable attendance record, even while raising five children. As of today, Zuney works as a supervisor in the reception of Villa House.
Sithu describes Zuney as a caring and compassionate person. According to her, Zuney possesses a notable ability to understand the needs and concerns of others, going to great lengths to help resolve any issues they may be facing. Sithu admires her kindhearted nature, which shines through in her interactions with colleagues and friends.
Beyond her professional life, Zuney harbors a strong passion for cooking. She excels in preparing a wide variety of dishes, and her culinary skills are praised by many. Ikury affirms, “It’s true. Zuney’s cooking is delicious.”
18
Sithu’s journey at Villa began on 4th September 1991. As she was assigned to the Launch section, her responsibilities primarily revolved around the administrative tasks associated with handling the speedboats. Due to the lack of computer systems during that period, Sithu and her colleagues managed major tasks manually, including making bills and keeping the speed boat schedules. Sithu explains the significant change that has taken place since then, saying, “The main difference is that once the HR Department was established, we no longer had to handle HR-related tasks, which lightened our workload.”
For fifteen years, Sithu was the sole female Team Member in her department until new female Team Members joined later on. It was during this time that they were finally provided with separate computer systems to support their work.
Sithu
Throughout her career, Sithu has worked under the guidance of four seniors who played a vital role in shaping her professional growth. Currently, Sithu holds the position of Senior Assistant Manager at Villa Marine Transport (VMT), showcasing her dedication and expertise in her field. When asked about her happiest moments at Villa, Sithu emphasizes the recognition and appreciation she receives from her seniors for her efforts in carrying out her job responsibilities.
Ikury describes Sithu as a great friend who is always there for others. She holds a special place in both Zuney’s and Ikury’s hearts. Sithu’s helpful nature and brilliant advice have made her a trusted confidante. Sithu and Ikury even took part in a computer learning course together, which effectively enhanced their working skills.
Outside of work, Sithu’s primary focus is on taking care of her family, leaving her with limited personal time. However, she manages to find moments to unwind by going for coffee and spending time with her close friends, many of whom she has known since her school days.
When considering improvements in the workplace, Sithu expresses a desire to see the management recognize and provide relevant benefits to Team Members for their long-term service. She believes that such recognition would greatly boost the morale of both current and
19
Ikury
Ikury was employed at Villa on 2nd May 1992. Initially, she spent three months working at the reception before being transferred to the shipping department. Throughout her tenure, she has taken on various responsibilities, including handling HR tasks, managing accounts, and overseeing cargo clearance. Ikury approaches her work with wholehearted dedication, always striving to give her best. Despite the passage of time, she remains the sole female Team Member in her department. Currently, she holds the position of Assistant Manager: Agency Shipping.
Ikury openly shares her experience of facing opposition and criticism from some of her colleagues who held differing views about women in the workforce. The hurtful words directed towards her took a toll on her morale, to the point where she contemplated giving up. However, it was the support and encouragement from her senior, Gafoor (Gabbe), that motivated her to persevere. Although Gabbe has since moved on from their team, his legacy continues to motivate Ikury. She now works under the guidance of Shiham, who she describes as another outstanding manager.
One of Ikury’s happiest memories at Villa involves an unexpected encounter with the chairman two years ago. During their brief interaction, he recognized her and praised her for her long-standing commitment to the company. The chairman’s words resonated deeply with Ikury, serving as a validation of her efforts and dedication.
Sithu describes Ikury as a people person, effortlessly connecting with individuals of diverse personalities. Her great sense of humor brings joy to those around her, as she often lightens the atmosphere with jokes and laughter. Outside of work, Ikury finds solace in listening to music and indulging in watching series during her free time.
20
Zuney, Sithu, and Ikury have remained a closeknit team even though they work in different departments. Their friendship and team spirit have stood the test of time. Ikury shares that she and Sithu continue to go jogging together, a tradition they have kept over the years. Afterward, they visit Zuney, who always has refreshing lemon juices ready for them.
This trio has even traveled together abroad. They went on sightseeing and shopping trips to Sri Lanka twice, bringing along their children. Zuney reminisces, “The three of us simply wanted to meet outside of our country. We stayed in the same apartment during those trips, and they were filled with countless treasured memories.”
While their friendship and team bond are highly valued, they credit their extended time at Villa to their genuine passion for their jobs. Sithu clarifies, “Certainly, we have a deep connection, starting our careers at Villa around the same time and going
through many experiences together. However, it is our love for what we do and our commitment to the company that has kept us here.”
When asked about the most influential mentor at Villa, the trio’s unanimous response is the chairman. They express immense gratitude for his continuous support and encouragement throughout their careers. His guidance has been instrumental in their professional growth and job satisfaction.
As the interview draws to a close, they offer a brief yet meaningful piece of advice to aspiring young women entering the workforce: “You have the skills and capabilities, so don’t hesitate to shine like a diamond and believe in yourself.”
Undoubtedly, Zuney, Sithu, and Ikury’s journey so far at Villa Group serve as remarkable example of teamwork, perseverance, and the power of unity.

The Learning Circle
by Shamaam
Welcome to the first episode of the Learning Circle, a segment where our Guardians share their expertise, valuable advice, and insightful lessons. This segment aims to empower us with the knowledge and tools necessary for personal growth, enabling us to surpass our professional goals. Join us as we embark on a journey of self-improvement and discover the keys to success in our respective careers.
In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing business world, organizations must embrace a culture of continuous learning to stay ahead of the curve. The ability to learn and adapt quickly is critical to an organization’s success, and those that fail to foster a learning culture risk falling behind their competitors. Let us explore the importance of a learning culture in organizations, learn some success stories, and discuss individual habits people can work on to harness this culture for themselves and their departments.
Foster the culture!
A learning culture is an environment in which continuous learning is valued and encouraged. It is a culture that prioritizes learning and development, both for individuals and the organization. In a learning culture, Team Members are encouraged to take risks, experiment, and learn from their mistakes, with the understanding that failure is an essential part of the learning process.
1. Innovation and Growth
When Team Members are encouraged to learn and experiment, they are more likely to come up with new ideas and ways of doing things, which can lead to increased productivity, revenue, and growth.
2. Adaptability
In a rapidly changing business environment, organizations must be able to pivot quickly and adjust to new circumstances. A learning culture helps Team Members develop the skills and mindset to adapt to change.
3. Employee Engagement and Retention
Team Members want to work for organizations that invest in their development and provide growth opportunities. A learning culture can help improve employee satisfaction and reduce turnover.
Let’s explore why this is essential!
22
Success stories
Many organizations have experienced significant success by embracing a learning culture. For example, Google’s “20% time” policy, which allows Team Members to spend 20% of their time on projects of their choosing, has led to the development of several successful products, including Gmail and Google Maps.
Another success story is Zappos, the online shoe retailer known for its exceptional customer service. Zappos has a strong learning culture, with a focus on employee development and growth. This culture has helped Zappos attract top talent and become a leader in the retail industry.
What can you do to embrace it?
Individuals can play a significant role in fostering a learning culture within their department. Here are some habits individuals can work on to harness this culture:
1. Embrace Failure
Embrace failure as a learning opportunity. It is essential to have a growth mindset and understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process.
2. Seek Feedback
Seek feedback from colleagues and supervisors. Feedback helps identify areas for improvement and promotes continuous learning.
3. Continuous Learning

IN SEARCH OF A SILVER LINING REVISITING THE PAST
by Bubblegum
Lugman peered through the expansive front-facing window of the building, his gaze fixated on the darkened sky embellished with brooding rain clouds. It seemed as though rain would soon grace the surroundings. Thankfully, Lugman had the foresight to bring his trusty umbrella along. Without it, navigating back to the Maafannu district today would have proven quite challenging. The candidate who had occupied the seat across from him had been in the interview room for fifteen long minutes. After their turn, it would be Lugman’s chance to leave an impression on the interviewers. Despite his thorough preparation for this interview, his heart fluttered with anticipation. This marked Lugman’s tenth interview of the year, and as the year drew closer to its end, he couldn’t discern any potential avenues for improving his life.
As Lugman observed the multitude of candidates vying for jobs, his hope for success in today’s interview began to wane. They were all in the same boat, striving for opportunities just like him. Presently, the seventh candidate was being interviewed, while eleven others occupied the seats behind Lugman. Surely, among them were individuals with work experience, unlike himself. Lugman’s qualifications solely consisted of his educational background, having completed O-Level and A-Level before obtaining a degree in Business Administration. However, this degree had yet to prove beneficial for Lugman.
Soon after the candidate exited the interview room, the receptionist called out Lugman’s name. Taking a deep breath, he stepped forward and entered the room.

Seated around the brown round table in the center were three interviewers, one of whom gestured for Lugman to take a seat in front of them.
“Welcome to this interview session! My name is Haifa, and joining me are Salim and Ashraf. Let’s begin with your introduction,” Haifa introduced herself, setting the stage for the conversation.
The question of self-introduction was one Lugman had grown accustomed to answering. He had become proficient at delivering a compelling introduction from all his previous interviews. Lugman responded to their questions adeptly, impressing the interviewers throughout the session. However, at a certain point, Haifa posed a question that had never been directed at Lugman before.
“As you reflect upon your life thus far, do you consider yourself a successful person?” Haifa’s inquiry sparked a torrent of memories racing through Lugman’s mind.
In his childhood, Lugman experienced the heartache of his father abandoning his mother for another woman. It left Lugman and his younger sister, Lahfa, devoid of their father’s love. To make ends meet, their mother worked in different households on their island, making sacrifices to support them. Tragically, she succumbed to despair and loneliness. With no one to care for Lugman and Lahfa on the island after their mother’s death, their maternal aunt’s husband brought them to Malé City against her wishes. Lugman dedicated himself to studying tirelessly, aiming to secure a bright future for himself and Lahfa. However, despite his efforts, the benefits of a good education had yet to materialize. Every day, Lugman heard his aunt’s complaints about struggling to pay rent, utilities, and put food on the table. His income from tutoring neighborhood children, which amounted to 4,000 rufiyaa, failed to cover all the expenses, forcing him to borrow money from others. People ridiculed him for not securing a decent job despite having a degree. Lugman’s greatest concern now was that they might be forced to return to their island, leading Lahfa to abandon her education in Malé City. Given all these hardships, how could Lugman possibly label himself as successful yet?
“Lugman... why are you taking so long to answer?” Haifa’s voice snapped Lugman back to reality. The room’s air conditioning was on, yet Lugman felt an overwhelming heat engulfing him. Honesty was ingrained in Lugman’s character, flaws and all. Thus, he answered with a resolute “no” to the question of whether he considered himself a successful person. When asked for an explanation, Lugman could only muster, “It’s too personal.”
As soon as Lugman exited the office, rain began to pour. He sought refuge under a shelter along the road, loosening his dark blue tie and unbuttoning the collar of his white shirt. The thought of calling Farshan for a coffee before heading home crossed his mind. However, when he reached for his phone, he discovered it was switched off. Lugman’s phone had a battery issue and tended to drain quickly. In all honesty, speaking to Farshan about the hardships he faced during his job search brought him no solace.
Farshan would dive into his usual spiel, advising Lugman to seize any available job opportunity and claiming that all work held its own value. According to Farshan, earning halal and fair income sufficed. Lugman consistently countered Farshan’s philosophy with a firm response, telling, “I invested so much in my education to attain a reasonable future.” Yet, on this day, Lugman lacked the courage to express such sentiments.
The bustling traffic and hurried pedestrians on the road moved swiftly, intent on reaching their destinations before the rain fully descended. Lugman unfurled his red umbrella and set off on his journey home, contemplating the probing question posed during the interview. What kind of question was that? Shouldn’t interview questions align with a candidate’s CV? How could Lugman be considered successful when his professional journey had not yet commenced? It seemed audacious for interviewers to inquire about such personal matters without understanding the intricacies of another person’s life. Lugman felt that interviewers should undergo training to refine their interviewing skills and formulate proper questions. Another job opportunity slipped away, prompting him to resume his search on government gazettes and job portals like Jobsicle. How much longer would he be held in this predicament?
The elevator in Lugman’s apartment building was out of order, leaving him with no choice but to climb the stairs. However, he had no intention of rushing to the fourth floor. Taking each step deliberately, he could hear cries and shouts emanating from above. The anguished voice of his aunt pierced through the commotion, and Lugman could distinguish the sound of Lahfa’s sobs. With a surge of determination, he swung open the apartment door. His aunt stood there, her face contorted with anger, but Lugman’s attention was solely focused on Lahfa, huddled on the couch with Hana, his cousin, comforting her. Lahfa’s tears were a rarity, and his aunt’s fury couldn’t be without cause. Lugman hurried forward, eager to uncover the source of the turmoil. “Lahu...”

SHATTERING GLASS CEILINGS
I’d like to share an incredibly inspiring story. This is the story of a woman who has inspired me beyond measure, a trailblazer who forged a path forward for countless other women through her unwavering strength, her ability to weather even the toughest of times, and her unyielding “never give up” attitude - even when it seemed like all hope was lost.
This woman grew up in a small town and started her young adulthood on a farm with her husband. She was a daughter, sister, wife, and mother of 3 children, who worked very hard alongside her husband. They raised farm animals and crops, and she was involved in everything. Over time, the farming industry started to fall, and they needed to earn extra income. At this time, the husband felt he was too old to get a good-paying job that would save the farm and family, so the woman decided to take on this challenge.
Her passion for hair styling ran deep, and she held a cosmetology license that allowed her to style

hair for her neighbors from the comfort of her own home. While she could have worked at a salon in town, the earnings wouldn’t have been enough to keep the farm afloat. She also had a keen interest in helping troubled kids, but the costs and time needed for a college degree or government job were out of reach. However, she was determined to pursue her calling and realized that working for the government would allow her to receive an education and pay simultaneously. So, she set her sights on a career that would allow her to work with children and make a decent living. Despite her high test scores in psychology and weaponry, the most viable option for her was to become a Corrections Officer for the Department of Corrections - which meant working in a prison. Undeterred, she became one of the first women to work in such an institution and was tasked with handling the most dangerous male inmates at a maximum-security prison. Her husband may have had his reservations about her decision, but with their farm and family on the line, there was no room for second-guessing.
28
She would go to work day or night passionately without any complaints. Her fellow male officers would tease her trying to intimidate her. They made her climb extremely high in the tower knowing she was deathly afraid of heights. She said once she reached the top, she would sit on the floor and cry until she could stand up and look out. After doing this night after night, she finally overcame this fear and became stronger for it. The male inmates would try to intimidate her with the hope that she would resign. One upset inmate even came at her with a heavy mop ringer saying he was going to hit her and she managed to control him until the support unit arrived to take him down. She continued to work as she was trained and would not give up.
At times, it was awfully hard, she told me that she kept one thing in her pocket to remind her she is still a lady and would rub on it. It was a silk scarf that give her peace, courage, and balance for what she was going through and kept her focused. After all, she was doing this for her family and to save the farm.
During her time there, she did work part-time in a juvenile institution with kids and learned quickly that they were not mature enough to learn to be better, so she decided not to pursue this career. She did, however, achieve 6 promotions throughout her 20 years with the Department of Corrections (Corrections Officer I & II, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major) and earned a nice pension. Curious, I asked her why she had applied for promotion so many times. Without missing a beat, she confided that the prospect of working under some of the other candidates filled her with dread. So, rather than taking any chances, she took matters into her own hands and submitted her CV alongside theirs. And, as fate would have it, she ended up securing the very positions that she had feared would have been filled by the very bosses she wanted to avoid. In doing so, she has successfully proved that glass ceilings can be shattered.
prisons and ended her career at age 60 as a Major overseeing a prison facility with 1,400 female inmates and 375 officers.
As the main overseer of the facility’s opening, she held a critical role. Should anyone attempt to escape, she would be responsible for coordinating search parties and ensuring that fugitives were brought back to serve their sentence. She approached her job with a balanced perspective, lending an ear to both sides of the story and carrying out her duties with integrity, fairness, and steadfast adherence to procedures and protocols. And, through it all, she never lost sight of her feminine grace and poise a true embodiment of the idea that one can be both strong and ladylike.
The moral of this story is to let your fear drive you toward success and overcoming challenges. There is no age limit to when you can achieve wonderful things in your life and make a difference to others.

Raw and Real Stories of our Team Members
Early Life
Fayaz’s early life and upbringing were shaped by the experiences of growing up in a modest-income family, with a father who was often away at sea and a mother who worked tirelessly to support their household. Fayaz was the eldest of five siblings.
Despite the various obstacles faced during those days in Malé City, Fayaz’s parents worked hard to provide for their children a good standard of living. Fayaz vividly remembers how much his parents had to sacrifice to make ends meet. It wasn’t easy, but their children’s education was their top priority. “My mom urged us to study,” Fayaz recalls, and this emphasis on education was a driving force in his life from an early age. Fayaz’s mother worked for the government, and she instilled in her children the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving their goals.
Welcome to the exciting first episode of the Unfiltered Series! Buckle up and get ready to dive into the unvarnished and authentic stories of our colleagues at Villa Group. No holds barred, no filters - just raw, real, and inspiring accounts of their personal and professional journeys. In this series, we’ll be delving into the lives, experiences, talents, and aspirations of our amazing Team Members.
Our team at VVM had the pleasure of interviewing Ahmed Fayaz, a devoted and hardworking colleague who has dedicated 32 years of his life to Villa Group. Currently serving as Deputy Manager, Administration in the Logistics Department of Villa Hakatha, Fayaz has seen and experienced a lot during his tenure.
We had the chance to meet Fayaz on a gorgeous Thursday at the stunning Villa Nautica. From the moment we met him, we could tell that he was a gregarious and warm-hearted person with a cheerful personality.
potential and brilliance. It wasn’t long before Fayaz was transferred to Majeedhiya School, where he skipped a lower-class group and was placed in a one-year upperclass group, further demonstrating his impressive intelligence. Throughout his time in school, Fayaz was actively involved in a diverse range of extracurricular activities, including sports and leadership roles. He was a shining example of a well-rounded student, with a passion for learning and exploring new opportunities. Fayaz’s dedication to his studies didn’t go unnoticed. His school principal recognized his potential and wanted to make him a prefect in 7th grade. Unfortunately, due to the school’s policy of selecting prefects only from grades 9 and 10, Fayaz couldn’t join the prefect board at that time.
His schooling began at Hameediya Montessori School, which is now known as Iskandhar International School. Even at a young age, Fayaz was already showing great
In 1978, Fayaz completed 10th grade earning impressive O-Level results. However, this was during the beginning of a significant shift in the education system in the Maldives. At the time, A-Levels were becoming mandatory for all O-Level graduates,
31
marking a pivotal moment in Fayaz’s academic career. With limited job opportunities available for science students, Fayaz made a strategic decision to pursue the arts at the A-Level.
Fayaz’s passion for sports was evident throughout his school life. He was a talented athlete, even representing his country in table tennis as a member of the national team. But Fayaz’s love for sports went beyond his own personal achievements. During his A-Level studies, Fayaz co-founded the Sports Club, Valencia, alongside a group of like-minded individuals who shared his passion for sports. They were driven by a desire to make a difference in how sports were organized in the Maldives, and they were determined to see their vision come to life.
Fayaz remained steadfast in his commitment to his studies and his dream of pursuing a political career by studying international law and political science. However, the road ahead was not an easy one. In his final year of school, the government abolished the requirement for A-Levels, causing most of his classmates to abandon their studies. Fayaz and two other classmates refused to give up on their dreams, choosing to stay in school. Sadly, their efforts were in vain. The government mandated that they join a new science education center, regardless of their focus on the arts. Frustrated and disheartened, Fayaz and his classmates tried to secure scholarships to study in the United States, but their attempts were unsuccessful. With his dreams slipping further out of reach and facing mounting pressure and restrictions, Fayaz was left with no choice but to make a difficult decision. He had to leave his studies and begin his working career as a deck cadet, putting his future in politics permanently on hold.
Working Career
Fayaz’s journey in navigation began on a fateful day - April 14th, 1980 - when he joined Maldives Shipping Limited (MSL) as a deck cadet, eager to learn the ins and outs of navigation. For three years, he worked hard and honed his skills, eventually earning a promotion to third officer at MSL. Looking back, Fayaz recalls these years as particularly challenging, as they were a time before the advent of GPS technology. Over time, Fayaz continued to advance in his career, becoming a second officer and earning the admiration and respect of his colleagues on the boat, Progress Liberty. However, when he was offered a position on another boat, Progress Light, he declined the opportunity, content with his current team. Unfortunately, MSL didn’t agree with his decision, and he was forced to tender his resignation.
Following his departure from MSL, Fayaz found himself drawn to a new opportunity - this time with Safari Tours. Despite MSL’s attempts to coax him back, Fayaz stood firm in his decision and committed himself fully to his new role as a chief officer at Safari Tours. His dedication and hard work paid off, and by 1990, he had earned a promotion to captain.
It was during this time that Fayaz’s path intersected with Villa, as the company acquired one of Safari Tours’ boats. This marked the beginning of a
32
new chapter in his career, as he was soon offered a position at Villa. In 1994, he was tasked with handling LPG work and given the responsibility of overseeing the bulk transfer of diesel and petrol. This was a trial that Fayaz relished, and he took great pride in executing his duties with the utmost precision and care. His commitment to his work and his exceptional skill set have made him an invaluable member of the Villa team.
He has been working at Malé’s port for Villa since 2006 and has worked his way up to become the deputy manager. One of Fayaz’s main job responsibilities is overseeing time charters, and this means he has to keep track of all the travels, reports, instructions, and costs. One of his most significant achievements was organizing a charter meeting with both the Managing Director and Chairman and making it a success. As he looks to the future, he hopes to see Villa’s business expand in the next five years, particularly in the area of main power development, and also to see more sailors developing in the Maldives.
Personal Life
We were curious about how Fayaz spends his weekends amidst his busy work schedule. To our delight, he shared that he devotes all his free time to his beloved wife and three beautiful daughters. Since getting married at the age of 38, Fayaz has been a loving husband and father, cherishing every moment with his family.
Fayaz’s passion for sports management is still very much alive, as he founded the New Lagoon Swimming Club six years ago and remains one of its prominent members. His motivation behind creating the club was to foster his children’s love for swimming and contribute to the formation of an athletics committee. Apart from swimming, Fayaz is an avid football enthusiast and loves to catch up on football matches in his free time. Aside from his love for sports and spending time with family, Fayaz has also discovered a passion for gardening. He finds peace and relaxation in tending to his plants and being surrounded by nature. Fayaz believes that gardening is not only a great stress reliever, but also a way to connect with the environment.
33
Amidst the pandemic lockdown, Fayaz also found a new hobby - watching Turkish dramas. Although he doesn’t consider himself a big fan of movies and series, he found himself drawn into the captivating storylines and characters of these shows and spent much of his free time indulging in them.
Fayaz’s passion for music knows no bounds. His favorite pastime is karaoke, and he has taken part in several karaoke sessions in Singapore and the Philippines. With diligent practice, he mastered a famous Chinese song and performed it flawlessly in Singapore. Even when traveling, he never misses an opportunity to hit a karaoke bar and sing his heart out.
As health-conscious as he is, Fayaz recently gave up his love for beef steak. He enjoys breakfast of dosa and sambar every morning. When it comes to living, he considers Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangkok as the ideal places to be.
Fayaz’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable, with his fair share of challenges, triumphs, and pursuits. He continues to inspire those around him with his unwavering dedication and perseverance. May he continue to flourish in all his endeavors and achieve even greater success. As Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
In this Rapid-Fire Round, we put Fayaz to the test with a series of quick-fire questions. Some questions presented two options, while others required onthe-spot answers. The game aimed to get a glimpse into Fayaz’s mind and find out what he really thinks giving him no time to ponder his responses.

HAPPY HACKS
by Bubblegum
Set foot on a transformative journey towards unlocking a happier and healthier you! Life can sometimes feel like a circus with so many different acts vying for your attention. From the pressure at work to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to feel like you’re walking on a tightrope. But don’t worry, I’m here to share some happy hacks to help you find your balance and keep your mental health in tip-top shape. So, what are we waiting for, let’s get started!
1. No Thanks, I’ll Pass:
Are you tired of being a yes-person? Do you find yourself buried under a mountain of work, with no time for anything else? It’s time to master the art of saying “No”! You don’t have to be a superhero and do everything yourself. Learn to set boundaries, prioritize your well-being, and take a break from the daily grind. Say “No” to excessive work demands and “Yes” to self-care, hobbies, and socializing. By doing so, you’ll improve your mental health and strike a balance between work and play. So don’t be afraid to say “No” - it’s your time to shine!
2. Take a Chill Pill:
Mindfulness is like a mental gym where you exercise your ability to be present and aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. It’s like taking your mind out for a spin to help you reduce stress, boost focus, and improve your overall well-being. Practicing mindfulness can be as easy as taking a few deep breaths, finding a quiet space to meditate, taking a mindful walk in nature or even taking a few minutes each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for in your life.
3. Shake it Off:
Moving your body isn’t just about getting fit, it’s also about feeling good! Exercise releases feelgood chemicals like endorphins, making it the perfect way to kick stress and anxiety to the curb. And you don’t have to be a fitness guru to enjoy the benefits – just find ways to add movement to your daily routine! Take a dance break in your living room, hop on your bike to run errands, or play some frisbee with friends. Even slight changes such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or doing some stretches at your desk, can make a big difference in your overall health and happiness. So, let’s get moving and groove our way to a better mood!
36
4. Coffee and Slay Stress: Need a break? Connect with your buddies! Taking time to catch up with friends and family can help you feel less stressed and more supported. Whether you grab a cup of joe at your local café, join a wellness program or organize team-building activities, bonding with others can help you feel happier and healthier. Plus, you’ll have someone to chat with about the latest episode of your favorite TV show or the new workout routine you’ve been trying out. So, go ahead and blend and bond with your pals – your mental health will thank you for it!
6. Sleep like a Boss:
It’s important to catch some Z’s to keep your mind and body as fit as a fiddle. Skipping out on sleep can make you feel grumpy and foggy, and even lead to health problems. So, prioritize getting those precious hours of rest and set a sleep schedule that works for you. Make sure to create a cozy sleep environment, avoid caffeine before bedtime, and wind down with relaxing activities like having a cup of herbal tea or listening to calmer music. With a good night’s sleep, you’ll be ready to tackle the day and seize the day with a clear mind and energized body.
5. Be your own BFF: Do you find yourself being too hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned? It’s time to practice self-compassion! Just like you would comfort and support a friend going through a tough time, you can do the same for yourself. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with kindness, understanding, and acceptance, especially during challenging times. It’s not about being self-indulgent or lazy, but rather about acknowledging that you’re human and deserving of love and compassion. So, the next time you make a mistake or face a setback, take a deep breath and offer yourself some kind words of encouragement. And don’t forget to treat yourself to some self-care activities, such as taking a relaxing bath or reading a good book.
7. Taking a “You” Turn: Work can be stressful, and it’s easy to get caught up in the grind. But it’s important to take a step back and give yourself some much-needed TLC. Take breaks throughout the day to clear your mind. You can take a quick stroll around the office, do a few yoga stretches, or take a breather outside to soak up some sunshine. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that brings you joy and helps you feel refreshed. After all, a little “you” time goes a long way!
To wrap things up, don’t forget that taking care of your mental health is like watering a plant - it needs some TLC to grow into a beautiful and happy version of itself. It’s okay to put yourself first and make sure you’re feeling good because when you’re feeling good, you can spread those good vibes to those around you. So go ahead and prioritize your mental health. You deserve to feel your best and live your best life!

THE SUPER MARIO BROS. (MOVIE)
Aired: Apr 21, 2023
Starring: Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black
Streaming Platform: Prime Video
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 58% Audience Score: 95%
The Mario Movie’s soulless screenplay relies on empty nostalgia and inter-franchise references, lacking depth or creativity. Its flimsy plot is hurriedly pushed forward, interrupted only by a contrived musical number. While visually appealing and mildly entertaining, the film lacks substance and artistic ambition. It caters solely
to young children, aiming to extract money rather than providing a meaningful cinematic experience.
Verdict: SKIP IT. Fails to capture the essence of the beloved video game franchise ultimately tarnishing the legacy of Mario.
A BEAUTIFUL LIFE (MOVIE)
Aired: Jun 1, 2023
Starring: Christopher Nissen, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Christine Albeck Børge
Streaming Platform: Netflix
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 50% Audience Score: 82%
A Beautiful Life fails to construct a compelling plot to support Christopher’s great singing performances. The film’s attempts at humor often result in unintentional laughter due to absurd character actions. The dialogue is cliché and lacks originality. The mishandling of Lilly’s traumatic backstory and the forced plot twist
of her pregnancy contribute to the film’s overall lack of coherence. It is a ridiculous movie with a fittingly absurd ending.
Verdict: SKIP IT. The film’s predictable storyline failed to engage and felt like a tired rehash of countless other movies.
