Construction: Based on the planned ability to hover the calculation is bound to the physical characteristics of the helium. The gas, even in its purest form, is only able to lift very light materials in addition to its own weight. Furthermore the condition between volume and weight needs to be fully balanced. The chosen foil is therefore not only the ideal material for flying constructions but also beneficial for this project

because of its human scale, which is necessary for its regular usage as an object of utility.

Based on the measurements of the available foil the chambers (cells) are conceived. Those shall be able to navigate the condition of the object in the air similar to an airship. The initiated rising and collapsing of the cells as a compound is prefaced by the turning of the inner skin of the model to the outside. To prevent the gas from

leaking the cell is designed with an exact relation between diameter of the tube to perimeter of the cell.

The therefore resulting squashing on the inside of the cell-tube keeps the gas within.

The process: Each chamber of the physical model provides a valve which either receives gas (to rise) or releases the gas (to collapse). By filling up the chambers the cell walls are extending to all sides. By na-

ture the chamber closes its valve by transforming from a flat to a three dimensional object. When the model reached its full extend as a floating object the collapse is initiated by the very same but reversed process. The now three dimensional cell is being turned around to release its gas. At the same time the transformation allows the cell to flatten again till it becomes by nature of the turn the outer skin of the next collapsing cell.

The Performative Model “Stratus Quo” (stratus cloud = low-level cloud; status quo = current state of affairs) is an empirical model, made to hover, which is able to transform in its location, extent and form by (self)directed interventions to fade or rise within its spatial characteristics. The fundamental question „from ground up: can architecture become a cloud? Towards ground: can a cloud become architecture?“ is

thereby not answered in its entirety but the step towards generating architecture for the expanse between the ground and the sky, to design something nearly unlimited in its agility and levity that (self) transforms in structure, space and function, can be an approach to a further understanding of the complexity and relation towards architectural developement with the use of the many natural phanemonen such as the cloud.

Goals of the Course: The Archive Building Course led by guest lecturer Luis Berríos-Negrón was aimed to review the fundaments of spatial production. In that case the archive was applied and developed as a probe in three steps: The architectural - where the students made an empirical prototype (based on the reading Jorge Luis Borges’ Library of Babel) that served as scalable object for archi-

The reticular - as graphic and sculptural demonstration that aimed to explore and challenge the ideas about cataloging, classification, distribution and the problem of memory as an retrieval.

Design Concept: Focus was to ease the daycaring process by creating visual references to enable a great overview for the teachers. Another factor was the site which is currently used as a city park. To maintain the park with its old trees it was nessesary to compact and lift the building.

This decision causes many benefits for the neighbouring people and the KITA itself: it creates a building with great source of natural light, an untouched park, space for events and a playground under the building for rainy days.

Furniture Concept Diagram (6)

Design Development: In order to mediate the complex issues of climate change we considered and developed an architectural archetype - the greenhouse. The main task was to define an own understanding of the greenhouse in order to social, enviromental, perceptional and sitespecific qualities. The construction is made of grade pine wood, polycarbonate panels and aluminum.

It was built close to an almost

forgotten biotope at the Leonardo Campus: To increase the intake the geometry angles towards the main cours of the sun. A chimney (1/3) and a rotating door (4) benefit the wind circulation. The folding doors (5) allow to maintain the plants from all sides. Finally a pump is slupplying the greenhouse with water from the pond. (2) The planting funiture provides different heights for the needs of the plants and the utiliy for the gardeners.

Assignment 1: „light night“: The german word for light „Licht“ brought me to the related term „Lichtung“ which defines the glade of a forest. Since a forest grows from its own rules which we might interpretate as „random“ the investigation aimed

to find those patterns to create a system for a physical model of a forest glade. The smallest and largest measured distances and the average diameter of the trunks (1) defines the amount of rows and the spacing between each tree. In the physical model (5) each char-

coal stick (trunk) in a row is linked with a thread that determines the distance. Pulling each thread transformes the default position of a dense field (3) into a glade. The digital model was later revised by a grasshopper definition, which implements the same ruleset.
