The perfect mattress should be more than simply comfortable. It should offer full body support while allowing you to breathe easy. “Many things can go wrong with a mattress,” says Dr Simone Laubscher, a nutritional therapist. “From an overload of dust mites and bacteria that can affect sleep pattern, to the mattress being too hard or soft for your particular physicality. Poor sleep has also been linked to increased stress, cortisol production and weight gain. There is a lot to be said for having a good mattress.” We asked sleep experts what you should consider when investing in good healthy slumber. Firm versus soft A medium-firm mattress has been identified in studies as the most likely to ensure a solid night’s sleep. “Because we move around at night, sleep is an active metabolic process,” Laubscher says. “A medium-firm mattress encourages you to move regularly, which prevents blood clots and allows easier breathing and back support.” Emily Wynne-Jones, head of product innovation at sleep brand Simba agrees. “Our Simba Hybrid mattress is available in just one level of firmness, medium-firm, because research has shown this increases sleep quality.” Simba has spent time and energy thinking about what makes the perfect mattress. It created 70 prototypes and spent more than a year testing its product, before launching in 2016. It was the first mattress using springs and foam to be delivered in a box, and established it as a leading mattress brand in Britain and Europe. It has now brought the product to Australia. Size matters Sleep like a starfish? “Ensure there is plenty of room to move,” says respiratory and sleep physician Dr Andrew Rosenstengel, “especially if sharing with a partner.” With lack of personal space and partner disturbance common culprits of poor sleep, a mattress that is large enough for two is essential. Check your ideal size, by ensuring you can lie side-by-side, with your arms behind your head,

Memory foam is a popular choice of mattress for both its durability and longevity. Whilst it does retain heat, it has the ability to conform to your full body-shape, which allows good spine alignment and lumbar support. Its thick density also means you are less likely to feel your partner tossing and turning next to you, which means you can slumber without being disturbed. Spring mattresses move independently with every move you make, and because they are well ventilated, help prevent the accumulation of body heat. Coils that are interconnected are especially hard-wearing, while individual pocketed ones help decrease the ripple effect that occurs when your bed mate rolls over, as well as the risk of you rolling towards them. Can’t choose? Memory foam and spring is a dreamy combination designed to offer a sublime sleeping experience. “No one else offers the combination of Simbatex, which is memory foam and our 2500 patented conical springs,” says Wynne-Jones. “It gives you the best of both worlds, so you never have to compromise on comfort and support. “The springs in a Simba Hybrid mattress adjust under each person’s body weight, because they’re conical rather than the normal barrel shape. They don’t compress in a linear way. The more pressure applied, the more resistance the springs give, so everyone gets the right amount of support. The patented springs make them unique, moving horizontally and vertically to fit the shape of your body and give you the best sleep.” Don’t let the bed bugs bite With studies revealing that about 10 per cent of people are sensitive to house dust mites, preventing bed bugs is vital, says Dr Laubscher. “They can have a huge negative effect on breathing and overall sleep quality,” she says. Keep animals off the bed, use an allergy-proof slip mattress cover so the mites can’t access your sheets and pillows, and wash your bed linen in very hot water. “Endeavour to change your sheets at least once a week to reduce dust mites and other potential allergens,” says Dr Rosenstengel, “and think about replacing your mattress every seven years.” Article source: https://www.domain.com.au/living/
