YOUR GUIDE TO RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

KNOWN AS THE CIDADE MARAVILHOSA

is Brazil’s most popular destination. Boasting golden beaches, lush forested mountains, world-class art museums and unfettered joie de vivre, part of the city has been designated as a World Heritage site. It is also known for its live music scene — you will hear bossa nova, funk and samba almost everywhere you go.

TOP THINGS TO SEE & DO

CHRIST THE REDEEMER: An Art Deco concrete statue of Jesus Christ with his arms outstretched. Located at the peak of the 700-metre Corcovado mountain, the statue is 30 metres high and has become a cultural icon.

SAMPLE BRAZILIAN STREET FOODS: Think churrasco (barbecued meat on a skewer), brigadeiros (chocolate truffles), feijoada (pork and black bean stew), bacalhau (salted cod and potato fritters) and pão de queijo (cheesy bread).

TAKE THE CABLE CAR UP SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN: Rising 396 metres above the harbour, the view from the peak takes in Copacabana, Centro and Botafogo’s yachtfilled bay, all under the gaze of Christ the Redeemer looking down from Corcovado.

EXPERIENCE THE NIGHTLIFE OF SANTA TERESA: Rio de Janeiro’s bohemian neighbourhood is home to traditional Brazilian bars and live samba venues. Going to a samba night is an absolute must.

HIT THE BEACHES: Copacabana and Ipanema are two of the city’s most famous beaches. Expect to see locals playing volleyball, soccer players singing their team’s anthem and beach vendors selling various wares.
