Beacon

Re-Housing the Bristol Flyers The proposal aims to challenge the current way of imagining stadia by breaking the typology down to its core. Reversing the effects of the codification and commercialisation of sport, the design aims bring back the essence of what a ‘spectacle’ entails. By establishing the building in its context and addressing the very root of the role sport plays in collective identification, the site is designed to enrich the city with a flexible and easily accessible public build.

Four distinct areas of development that surround the site culminate to give character to the island development. They help create a rich and structured setting for the arena, and offer opportunity to develop further layers of activity, amenity and texture to a new community. The Arena offers a new landmark in the city fabric, a prominent, glowing entertainment destination and attractions for the people of Bristol and visitors to the city.

The arena is designed as an expression of primal elements such as light, sound, rhythm and pattern to help stamp the authority of the building as one of significance in the city scape. It is structurally honest, driven by ambitions of low emissions and portrays Bristol’s developing ideology as city: Well integrated public architecture. Conveniently located right next to Bristol’s major transport hub, Temple Meads, the building hopes to define a new era in sport architecture: One of the community.

The question was, what really is the context for a stadium typology Is it the area that it located in? Is it the immediate context? Is it the historical nature of the site? Or is it actually the ambition of the building of being a centrepiece in the subtext of the city? It became important to address all aspects of the ‘context’ of the building.

FLYER’S STADIUM

The site becomes the link between the areas that surround it. The running track guides users through the site connecting the various paths through the site.

The lines in the path are a reference to the history of the site and a nod to the prominent context of Temple Meads as they are reminiscent of train track lines.

The increased connectivity allows the site to be used more and engage more with the public. The amount of footfall by people accessing the site allowed for the creation of a promenade between the river and the landscaping. The site is dedicated to offering more sport and leisure activities for the public that will be structured, maintained and supervised by the Bristol Flyers. Independently operated kiosks are available for the public and help link the promenade and the landscaping.

The Flyers Centre Pavilion is essential to the scheme as this the point where a user first encounters the site. The management of the stadium, the community programmes and the outdoor facilities happen here.

The building is a reflection of the stadium using similar constructional and architectural principles. The base of the offices is made of concrete and the community side which addresses the river is a constructed using timber and glazing.

As a team The Flyer’s engage heavily in community outreach programmes and as developing club they require and additional revenue they can get. Their aim is to have a stadium that can be used for a variety of different indoor sports and events so that the stadium may be used to generate income on non match days. Have a permeable and flexible performance space was key to the approach which is why the ground floor consists of only bleacher seating to allow more room for different events.

The Columns The columns are a combination of steel I-sections are fibre reinforced concrete. Since they act in both tension and compression at the same time the two materials work together to hold up the roof.

The Base An arena is a building that usually remains in place and is used until is not safe to be used any longer. With a life span of 50-70 years it was important to design structures that can withstand the test of time and weathering. Concrete is one of the foremost materials to do just that. The base of the building is designed using upcycled concrete aggregate. This helps reduce the environmental impact of the building and also provides the solidity to support the rest of the structure.

The Roof The intention for the roof was to create a materially efficient, environmentally friendly way of covering a long span structure.

Typically indoor stadiums come with complex roofing mechanisms which are needed to house lighting rigs, ventilation units and so forth. The challenge became to try and manipulate the outdoor elements and create a space that is devoid of excessive artificial interference. Various structural strategies have been tried and tested but this arena wanted the environmental benefit of natural light with the controlled aspect of artificial light. Hence, this roofing system was devised.

Derived from the structural methodology of a suspension bridge, Glulam beams are used in conjunction with steel cables to create a service zone in the roof capable of accommodating a wide variety of tasks.

The Junctions All connection from concrete to timber are made from steel. An emphasis was made to expose the connections allowing the to be visible. Parts of building need to fit together, they must be functional can also be aesthetically pleasing if done well.

Multi-Sport Hall

Due to ‘match days’ occurring every two weeks it was important to make the space adaptable so that the Flyers may gain revenue by hiring the space out for other uses. The uses are unlimited as far as indoor events go.

MUGA guidelines of multipurpose sports hall were also followed as when the bleacher seating is retracted the floor arena doubles and can accommodate 32 indoor sporting activities.

Yr 4 // Basil Spence // Filton Airfield, Bristol

Flagship

A Moving Space, Sustainability Through Versatility

A group project with 4 architecture students and 2 civil engineering students.

The brief was the design a flagship building for YTL’s re-development of the Filton airfield. It called for the inclusion of two auditoriums and exhibition spaces for a model home and scale model of the site. The building was designed to have two ‘lives’ – one for the first 10 years to act as a showcase for the whole YTL development, and the one after to act as a national centre for advanced technology, showcasing the world leading work of local aerospace and technology based companies.

Without knowing how Filton may evolve in the future, we must still accommodate many potential uses. By providing the community a free open space which can be used in any number of ways, we aren’t imposing an architecture on the people, instead we allow the community to easily adapt the building however they see fit. We imagined a number of possible future uses, and ways in which our architecture may adapt to them.

Our proposal challenges how sustainability can be approached in contemporary design. Using long lasting materials and simple but efficient service arrangement, we can ensure the building exceeds the life requirements of the brief, reducing the embodied CO2 per year. A highly versatile floor plan allows for endless reconfigurations, adapting to the changing needs of the Filton community. By creating a community space, and reducing the needs for expensive adaptive reuse, we can safeguard against the building becoming obsolete and being demolished in the future – a disastrous move in terms of embodied carbon.

Our key approach to sustainability is to highly scrutinise the embodied CO2 in our building, not just for the construction period, but over the whole life of the building. Since most embodied CO2 comes from the construction process, increasing the length of the buildings life will drastically reduce the embodied CO2 per year.

To create a building which will have as long a life as possible, a highly versatile space would be required, with the potential to adapt to any number of future uses. The services would remain fixed, but habitable solids could extend and retract into the central freespace.

The boxes would slide along to where they were needed, and be collapsed when they were not in use.

The CLT boxes become movable pieces of furniture under a steel roof, wrapped in a glowing glass skin. Simple exposed structure celebrates the beauty of engineering efficiency, a theme pertinent to the aerospace heritage of Filton. The factory form responds to the history of Bristol, and becomes a symbol for YTL’s reinvention of the cities industrial fabric. The factory becomes a place of creating ideas, looking outwards, and the showcasing of innovation. A new approach, for an historic typology.

03 Yr 3 // Poplar, london

Project Poplar Bridge and Public Building The brief was a development and bridge in Poplar, a borough in London.

Poplar HARCA (Housing and regeneration community association) were looking to unlock the potential of the site available to us. It was a unique opportunity to connect different communities that are currently ‘cut’ off by the Limehouse cut canal.

The site is at the centre of Poplar’s most engaging community projects and schools. When Chirp Street Market realises its full potential the site will become a thoroughfare to the North of the Cut and thus a key destination for the wider public. The design must therefore consider people accessing the building from many different areas, communities and backgrounds as it is at the centre of such a variety of new and old developments. The use of the site for all times of day, and for a variety of different ages and groups of people must be considered. The building will act as community run kitchen and garden, enhancing the park’s biodiversity and act as the largest green space in Poplar. The community garden and workshop aims to educate on the process of growth and the cycle food goes through from land to plate, the economic benefit should only be to sustain the maintenance of the programme and garden. The land available on the site is not large enough to produce vegetation on an industrial scale, but this does not mean a sustainable system is not achievable.

Most of the programme needs to interact with both the canal and park. A courtyard scheme connects all of the spaces without creating one large mass. Placing WCs and Thames 21 towards the road allows the building to buffer the central courtyard from the noise of the road. The bridge can link directly to the central zone connecting with a public space on the offside.

Key routes through the site created a point at the centre of the site, this becomes a focal point that the bridge and accommodation should focus on. The bridge runs parallel to the tow-path at its central span to better address these key routes, whilst also creating a marina for extra mooring space whilst maintaining two way traffic through the canal.

The plan addresses a central axis that connects the offside with Bartlett Park via the bridge proposal. Walkways alongside the buildings create enclosures that draw you towards the accommodation and greenhouses. Secondary axis (from Stinkhouse bridge and Poplar Union) arrive at the central axis underneath bridged walkways which connect the rooftop garden above.

The scheme’s form of accommodation around greenhouses lends itself for further expansion, as and when poplar require further functions. With more development we could look at integrating more accommodation into the landscape and potentially evaluate whether a modular construction would be appropriate.

05 Yr 1 // Uni of Bath, Bath

Papilio

An Exhibition Pavilion The brief called for the design a pavilion sited on the lake overlooked by the university: to display the work of architecture students and act as a manifestation of the department. The design was motivated by wishing to provide a clear path for circulation as needed by an exhibition space. The outer skin of the pavilion was designed to be movable. The transparent nature of the design was a deliberate attempt to remind the viewer that they are atop a lake.

The pavilion intends to interact with it’s surroundings through massive doors that slide across the elevations as and when required.

Marek Wojciechowski Architects, London (Nov 2020 - Present) While at MWA, I have worked a number of projects ranging from grade I & II listed buildings to office developments and surgery centres through RIBA stages 1-5. My primary work has been to assist with the vast range of initial concepts in the office and help take them through to planning. While at office I have been involved in 7 successful planning applications, notably a new-build house in St. John’s Wood London and a large office building near Trafalgar Square. I have spent a significant portion of my time at MWA working directly with the Head of Design and the Principle Architect on bids to win work. I am also a part of the visualisation team that consists of two others and me, which recently came runners-up in Dezeen’s ‘Visualisation of the Year’. Apart from architectural work I have taken over the responsibilities of a studio manager, making sure the office is operational on a day to day basis.

John McAslan + Partners, London (Feb 2019 - May 2019) Worked with the transport team in the office on a large scale transport project. Was tasked with helping the bids coordinator with the production of documents for competitions and tenders.

Also had the chance to work with the residential team assisting them with the design for tower complex in Moscow.

ADA, India (March 2018 - August 2018) Worked on proving the concept for an mid-scale office building in a new project. Worked with the client to create concept drawings along with a senior architect. While I was there the project evolved from a conceptual stage to working drawings. While being able to help with drawings for a few residential project, I was also able to work on the development of a historical religious complex where I learnt how to liaise between the client, the office and vendors.

Kumar Moorthy and Associates, India (2016, 2017) Worked at this office to provide drawings and final presentations for projects. Was able to help with the design process for a few projects including a farmhouse and an office building.

Morphogenesis, India 2015 (1 month work experience) Provided research on Net-Zero concepts for ongoing projects.

Helped develop spatial concepts for the homeless using another ongoing project. Helped with maquettes and models for various projects. Used this opportunity to get guidance with

Marek Wojciechowski Architects // Private Residential

Langford Place New-build Family Home I recently worked on a full planning that was submitted for a new-build family home in St Johns Wood. Located on Langford Place, it is the second project this firm has undertaken on the street within the last 5 years.

The existing three storey building was built circa 1950s following extensive bomb damage in WWII. However, it has little architectural merit or historic significance, poor energy performance. Therefore, we are proposing to demolish and replace it with a new energy efficient dwelling with 87% reduction of in-use carbon consumption compared with the existing building.

The house is arranged over 5 floors, including a new basement and loft level. The family home will utilise contemporary and natural finishes, and include a Japanese-style courtyard, swimming pool & spa, and subterranean entertainment areas.

I have been part of the project from its inception in the office. Through modelling and visuals, helped come up with a design that is sensitive to the adjacent buildings and the conservation area as a whole. Recently, I had the opportunity to work on the Stage 3 design where I used CGI’s and GA drawings to develop a concept that was well received by clients and colleagues alike.

Marek Wojciechowski Architects // Private Residential

Great James Street Full Planning & Listed Building Consent I worked on scheme for 3 no. properties on Great James Street that received Full Planning & Listed Building Consent. Each application proposes a change of use to restore the Grade II* listed property back to their original use as a single family dwelling.

Each of these properties form part of an early Georgian terrace, constructed in 1720 by the lawyer-come-developer John Metcalfe and have a rich history of housing craftsmen, surveyors, and master builders. The buildings original interiors remain wholly intact, however suffered neglect during their use as offices in the late 20th century. We proposed to carefully reinstate and accent their original Georgian details and craftsmanship.

Being allowed to design the rear extension was introduction to life at MWA. While it was challenging to understand the scope of information required to obtain planning, I am proud to have been part of the team that accomplished this. This process helped further my understanding of the planning process and what officers look for when reviewing applications.

Marek Wojciechowski Architects // Private Residential

Loudoun Road Renovation of Family Home MWA were appointed to renovate this Grade II listed building within a conservation area in Westminster. I worked on the feasibility proposal that included major internal refurbishment, demolition of the non original side extension and reconstruction of the side extension.

The site consists of a single house arranged over 3 storeys and a TFL tube line running directly under the rear garden.

Marek Wojciechowski Architects // Mixed Use - Shops, Office, Residential

Westbourne Park Refurbishment of Existing Building MWA were been appointed to proceed to pre-application stage for the redevelopment of a terrace in Notting Hill. The site consists of an entire terrace adjacent to Portobello Road. The houses have been much altered and are in a poor state of repair. I was asked to work directly with the principal architect and take over the design and pre-app for this scheme.

When given the opportunity to influence a project in an iconic part of London I made it a point to understand the history and nature of the site. The proposal looks to reinstate the traditional shop fronts at ground floor and includes full refurbishment of the first and second floor with a new mansard extension.

Marek Wojciechowski Architects // Private Residential

Boscombe New-build Family Home in Brighton Worked on the planning application for a new-build beach front family home on the coast of Bournemouth. We proposed to replace the existing property which has been subject to unsympathetic alterations with a new high quality dwelling that seeks to restore the site’s original hierarchy and grandeur. Designs include a grand light-filled central atrium stair; a master suite that overlooks the English Channel; and a unique perforated shutter system as a contemporary response to the vernacular of the Boscombe Manor Conservation Area.
