We see the slogans everywhere, spit out by aggressive fitness industry marketers like auctioneers and old-timey salesmen. We know in our heads not to buy into it—that health and fitness are lifelong pursuits, not something that can be bought in a supplement store or with a new fitness app—yet some part of us still manages to fall for it. Even if we don’t buy the product, we buy the idea that in the summertime, we should look a certain way. We buy the idea that we can’t really enjoy all that summer has to offer if we aren’t ready for a shirtless or bikini-clad photoshoot.

You already know that I want you to get into the shape of your life. So

you already know I’m not saying that you should give up. What I am saying is that if you missed your summer deadline this year, no matter how much weight you still have to lose, you shouldn’t feel self-conscious heading to the beach or to a pool. Guys, take your shirts off. Ladies, wear whatever kind of bathing suit you want. No one’s judgment matters but your own. As a human being living on Planet Earth it is your birthright to get out and enjoy sun!

The bright light of summertime does something to all of us. It makes us all feel more alive and makes us want to get out and do more with ourselves.

Indeed, our bodies are like batteries, soaking up vitamin D from the sun and storing it for when we need it.

Whether it’s for a special occasion or just a quick getaway, there are plenty of places for outdoor recreation in Florida.

We’ve put together a short-list of our ‘Top 4’ State Park camping destinations in the State of Florida… time to pack up the kids, grab some marshmallows & go off grid for a bit – relax & unwind with mother nature.

Fort De Soto Park

PINELLAS COUNTY PARK SYSTEM Fort De Soto Park, the largest park within the Pinellas County Park System (the closest to home of the 4), consists of 1,136 acres made up of five interconnected islands (keys). Boasting 238-site family camping area with facilities including picnic tables, grills, water, electricity, washers, dryers, sanitary disposal stations, modern restrooms, showers, play areas, &a camp store. All this & they’re pet friendly! *They offer special camp sites for camping with pets & there’s even a Dog Park (Beach Front). For all of these reasons, Fort De Soto Park tops our list!

It’s easy to see why Fort De Soto was named America’s Top Beach for 2009 by Trip Advisor, the world’s largest online travel community. In 2005, “Dr. Beach,” named Fort De Soto the nation’s #1 Beach. Annual park attendance averages more than 2.7 million visitors. No surprises here.

ST. AUGUSTINE Anastasia State Park, located in St. Augustine, a 1,600-acre Florida State Park located on a peninsula on the Atlantic coast of Anastasia Isl & across Matanzas Bay from downtown St. Augustine.

The campground contains 139 campsites all located within the beautiful maritime hammock & just a short walk or bike ride to the beach. You can also rent bicycles, paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, &sailboats. & of course, there’s a gift shop, grill area, &although this is supposed to be an off-grid experience, you guessed it, there’s even Wi-Fi! You can explore up to four miles of pristine beach, the estuarine tidal marsh teeming with plant &animal life, or the self-guided nature trail, which takes you through the maritime hammock &onto ancient sand dunes. You can also visit the Coquina Quarry, an archaeological site where coquina rock was mined to help construct the nearby Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, earning it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

St. George Island State Park

ST. GEORGE ISLAND Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park, located on St. George Island, located on the east end of St. George Island, approximately 10 miles southeast of Eastpoint, in Northwestern Florida. Access to the park is off U.S. 98, by way of a 4-milelong bridge. The campground features 60 campsites with water, electric, a central dump station & two bathhouses. Two primitive campsites can be accessed by a 2.5-mile trail or by canoe or kayak. A primitive group camp area is available for scouts & other organized groups. The park has six large picnic shelters equipped with grills, tables, & nearby restrooms.

There are miles & miles of undeveloped beaches on this barrier island, & they provide the perfect setting for this park. This offers visitors ample opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, canoeing, boating, hiking, camping &studying nature. There are also two natural boat ramps that provide access to the bay for small boats. Anglers can fish for

flounder, redfish, sea trout, pompano, whiting, Spanish mackerel & other fish off the beach or in the bay, making this a perfect choice for fishing enthusiasts!

As well, few parks offer better opportunities for shelling. Sea turtles & shorebirds, such as the snowy plover, least tern, black skimmer & willet, nest in the park during the summer.

Bahia Honda State Park

BIG PINE KEY Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key. This 524-acre tropical island destination, virtually uninhabited, is home to one of Florida’s southernmost State Parks; known for beautiful beaches, magnificent sunsets, kayaking, bicycling, swimming, fishing & excellent snorkeling. Founded in 1961, the park occupies most of the island. The channel at the island’s west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys. Three camping areas within the park provide a total of 80 campsites for both tent & RV campers.

Cabins are also available. Rest rooms & hot showers are easily accessible.

Noted as one of the best beaches in South Florida and a certified ‘Clean Marina,’ it’s not hard to figure out why Bahia Honda State Park (Beachfront camping with all the trimmings) made our ‘Top 4!’

Vigilant gardener and therefore, are paying a premium for food that still comes with all of the ramifications of Non-Organic food (pesticide and growth hormone exposure, etc.). However, Organic food, by default, is also Non-GMO. Therefore, consumers are catching on that when they pay the premium for these food choices, it’s much more worth it when purchasing ‘Organic’ and makes less sense when the food is only ‘Non-GMO.’ The ‘Non-GMO’ sticker might look important but without and ‘Organic’ sticker next to it, well… you get the picture.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

My recommendation when purchasing food, is to always read ingredient labels closely and if you can’t pronounce them & don’t’ know what they are, snap a picture with your smart-phone or write them down and RESEARCH them before feeding it to your family. If it has too many ingredients, skip it. The best foods to eat have less than 5 ingredients in them.

What is ‘Organic Food?’

Organic food is food produced by methods that comply with the standards of organic farming set forth by varying regulatory agencies throughout the different countries of the world. Organizations regulating organic products typically restrict the use of certain pesticides and fertilizers in farming and in general, require that organic foods also not be

processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or synthetic food additives.

As well, typically, Organic livestock are raised without antibiotics, growth hormones or other drugs.

It surprises most people to learn that Organic food is also NOT GeneticallyModified or Irradiated.

Many people are simply unaware that when paying a premium for Non-GMO foods, they are paying extra for food that is Non-GMO but is NOT Organic

I especially recommend avoiding high fructose corn syrup which is in most processed and fast foods.

Studies have linked it to diabetes, high blood pressure, liver damage and mercury poisoning. *It is also a GMO. Many times, people tell me it is just too expensive to buy all organic but new studies show that diet is the leading cause of heart disease, cancer, dementia, autoimmune disease, and type 2 diabetes. Now that we understand the basics on ‘organic,’ let’s get clear on ‘GMO’s…’

What is GMO Food?

According to the definition taken from the ‘Non-GMO Project’ website, GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (also called gene splicing), gene modification or transgenic technology. GMO Seeds are used in growing much of the food crops in the United States.

Why are people so opposed to GMO’s?

According to FoodandWaterWatch. org, ‘many of the processed foods available in our grocery stores include genetically engineered ingredients.

GMOs have been altered at the genetic level by adding genetic material from different species or making other changes that couldn’t happen through traditional breeding.

Despite the industry’s claims, there is no scientific consensus regarding the safety of these foods and the weak approval process for new GMO crops relies solely on testing by the companies that want to sell these new crops.

Even though 90% of Americans want labels on GMO foods, in July 2016 Congress passed a federal law blocking states from requiring GMO

labeling. This law overturns strong state laws like Vermont’s, and instead allows for GMOs to potentially be labeled with 800-numbers or QR codes. That’s not easy for people to understand, and it’s not a substitute for clear labels.’They have created a guide to understanding what foods are most likely to contain GMOs, but without clear, on-package labels, there’s no way to know for sure. You can download this guide in a jiffy by simply scanning the QR Code provided!
