Another season, another reason to get out and soak up the best of Wirral!

Autumn is one of my favourite seasons – as the nights draw in, fashion goes all snug and cosy, hair shades go darker and for me my usual tipple of white wine becomes a spicy red.

It’s a great time to get outdoors and enjoy a walk on a crisp Sunday afternoon before settling down to a satisfying roast or delicious seasonal casserole,. Our hedgerows are overflowing with goodies too at this time of year, so look out for abundant berries and more elusive sloe’s – they both make super jams!

As ever, this edition is full of inspirational ideas for you, your home and your family; from some great interiors ideas to our annual Christmas Party Guide, so you should find something that is perfect for you.

Pick Of The Season “In honour of our recent trip to the fabulous Talbot Hotel in Malton North Yorkshire, we bring you local lad (and the hotel’s Executive Chef) James Martin’s version of a mouth-watering Pumpkin Risotto...Enjoy!

Ingredients to serve 4 350g pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled | 25g butter | 1 shallot, peeled and finely chopped | 150g risotto rice | 700ml-1litre chicken or vegetable stock | 2 lobster tails, poached (optional) 75g butter | 50g mascarpone | 75g parmesan cheese, grated 1 tsp lime juice | lettuce leaves | olive oil | salt & black pepper Method Cut half the pumpkin into small dice (approx 1cm cubes) Roughly chop the remainder, drizzle with olive oil, season with salt and black pepper and place on a baking tray.

Cook in a

preheated oven (200C/fan180/gas 6) for 30 minutes or until tender.

When the pumpkin is still warm, tip into a blender and blend to a puree. Then pass the mixture through a fine sieve.

Melt a

tablespoon of butter in a saucepan, add the shallot and cook, without colouring, for 3-4 minutes. Add the rice and the diced raw pumpkin and stir well to coat.

Pour about 100ml of stock over the

rice and continue to cook for 12-14 minutes, adding more stock to the pan every few minutes or as soon as it is absorbed.

Roughly

chop one of the lobster tails (if using). When the rice is tender, with a little bite, add the pumpkin puree and the chopped lobster to the pan.

Stir in 40g butter, the mascarpone and the parmesan. If

you are using lobster, melt the last of the butter in a separate pan, add the chicken stock and heat until almost boiling.

Add the

remaining lobster tail and remove the pan from the heat.

1-2 minutes remove the lobster and slice thinly.

After

Presented to Head Chef Stewart Warner and his team at a glittering awards ceremony at the London Hilton Park Lane on Monday 24th September, the newly decorated chef was honoured.

“We are thrilled to have been acknowledged with tree coveted AA Rosettes,” commented Stewart. “Our whole ethos is about offering a fresh approach to modern British cuisine and it is an honour to be recognised alongside our peers within the industry”.

He took over the helm as Head Chef nearly three years ago and his innovative use of seasonal, local ingredients and widely regarded tasting menus truly showcase the very best of the region’s food and drink offering.

At 28 years old, Stewart is one of the youngest chefs in the country to achieve such a high standing. Only 10% of restaurants nationwide achieve a standard worthy of one AA Rosette or more and only 10% of restaurants withing the AA Restaurant Guide can boast three AA Rosettes or more, placing Stewart Warner in very good company.

Glamour Celebrating In Style Over 400 invited guests enjoyed a lavish party to celebrate the fantastic achievement alongside marking the hotels tenth anniversary.

The team celebrated in style and spared no expense in thanking loyal customers, popping open bottles of champagne and premium spirits while serving fine dining canapés and small plates based on the dishes served at three AA Rosette awarded Stewart Warner at Hillbark.

David M Robinson were on hand to keep guests sparkling all evening long with their stunning collection of jewellery, while live entertainment was provided by the magnificent 20 piece Toni James Band and stunt performers including fire breathers, angle grinders and

stilt walkers as well as aerial silk acrobats. A mesmerising fireworks display topped off proceedings before guests danced away into the early hours.

The Marine Point development heralds exciting new times for New Brighton with attractions for everyone and a real ‘destination’ feel. From cool coffee houses to a state-ofthe-art cinema and fabulous eateries, this exciting new addition to the town’s iconic waterfront has put the ‘new’ back into New Brighton....

It has signed a 20 year lease and the investment will create approximately 30 jobs.

Describe your school days I loved certain lessons like wood work, metal work, maths, art & craft, I truly believe I knew back then I had a creative passion I never missed any of those classes.

So did you go on to college or Uni? I never went to either…. My uncle was an electrical engineer and I would spend all my free time with him I was fascinated with how and why things worked as I am still to this day What was your first job?

BBC Radio 4 Gardeners’ Question Time comes to Ness Gardens

The sun shone, the crowds arrived - 2,000 in total - and for the first time ever in the North West, the biggest audience attended event that BBC Radio 4 had put on so far this year, anywhere in the UK - took place at Ness Gardens in South Wirral.

BBC Radio 4 gardening experts, including Bob Flowerdew, Matthew Biggs and Bunny Guinness, offered wise gardening Kevin Drage, Sam Bushell, David Bushell, Tony Marriot, Rachel Halsall, Kevin Ross, Cathy Hunt and Mandy Bushell

The Royal is one of the tallest buildings in Liverpool and since the event began, hundreds of thrill seeking supporters have taken part raising thousands of pounds to support worthy causes. Local law firm Brown Turner Ross took part this year and so far has raised £3,000.

Forum Housing Association ball raises funds to support young homeless people A charity ball organised by Wirral-based Forum Housing Association helped to raise hundreds of pounds. The event took place at Wirral’s Thornton Hall Hotel and was held to raise awareness and funds for young homeless people across Merseyside and Cheshire. The evening was compared by Lesley Rogers and featured music from Robin Lee. The total amount raised was over £4,500 and that will go towards their ‘Can Do Fund’.

Bubbles’ World of Play Set To Open Early 2013 Neptune has announced the latest attraction at its £60m Marine Point development in New Brighton. A new family entertainment centre, Bubbles’ World of Play, operated by Gloplay Limited, will occupy 21,000 sq ft in the Lido Building. It represents a further £1.8 million of private investment into the area.

The concept is centred on an innovative play frame, one of the largest ever seen in the UK. It will be five tiers high with room for more than 420 children to play safely and comfortably. Developed to promote learning through play, the frame is themed as a journey through an entire ‘World of Play’. Young ‘explorers’ entering the building start at an airport-style check-in desk, before visiting more than 30 different countries and zones, each with its own theme and educational relevance.

There will also be a Wild-West-themed cannon zone, a space rocket climb from the ground to the roof of the building, and a separate area where children can act out being shop-keepers, vets, police officers, mechanics, builders and more. This key area is designed to stimulate the creativity of young minds while providing an opportunity for parents to get involved in play activities with their children.

Graham Robinson, Managing Director of Soft Brick Company Ltd, the installer of the World of Play Frame, said: “The Soft Brick company will be building not only the largest play area in the UK but one we are confident will be described as ‘The Best Play Area in the World’. This will be a benchmark site for the next decade. It’s great news for us but also a real feather in the cap for Merseyside and the children of New Brighton.”

There will be special classes for toddlers, a large baby sensory area and a baby feeding room complete with bottle-making facilities. There will be a check-in-andout process to ensure the safety and security of the younger guests.

The site will also feature exclusive car parking with 90 spaces, four bespoke party rooms offering a variety of themes, high quality food and drink and a large area for outdoor activities. Parents will be able to learn computing skills via multimedia training courses at its dedicated computer suite.

Daniel Hynd, Project Director with Neptune, said: “We are delighted to bring this key development to Marine Point. The face of New Brighton is changing, and Bubbles’ World of Play will add an extra attraction to the estate, which the operators are hoping will draw more than 200,000 visits from across the North West.”
