Aim - To analyze the characteristics of space which makes the person pause while moving and generates experience in overall built environment

Chapter 2 : The second part discuss about how the theoretical knowledge of experience can be seen in built environment. Various aspects for understanding a place and the factors responsible for occupancy of spaces by humans at any place. And also this chapter is about the importance of transitional spaces and thresholds in journey of experience in built environment.

Experience Concept of Kinesthetics : Kinesthetics is the perception in relation to movement. Architecture which involves user and visitors (bodily and mentally) goes under kinesthetic experience. This means subtle choreography of movements and the sequences of atmosphere and the users and will constantly get involved in while experiencing the setting scene of space and light, material and color, smell and sound, movement and time.

Objectives- To understand the experiences generated in built environment while moving - To understand the character of space generated by architectural spatial qualities and type of experience that space creates - To understand parameters which plays important role in making a person pause and use the space

Chapter 1 : The first chapter is about the theoretical aspect of this study where various theoretician’s perceptions about experience in built environment is seen. It also discuss about the revelation of spaces through sequential unfolds and relation of movement and space-time phenomenon. The theory about phenomenon of kinesthetic and space perception is seen.

IntroductionThe research seeks to understand the experience of space while moving into it. Movement is fundamentally concerned with experience in a space and for that reason it is vital component in architecture. The movement in a space is always along with pause spaces, which are either transition spaces or thresholds within the built environment which helps the person to understand the place and proceed further. Movement is all about continual sequence and pause, where sequences can change in position by which one can “experience” the space on pause. The levels of complex are according to the importance of tombs. Saints tomb is on highest plinth whereas kings and queens tomb are lower plinth as compared to saints tomb. The scale of the spaces are also according to the importance given. The biggest is the mosque > Saints tomb > Kings tomb > Queens tomb >Baradari > Portico (smallest).

Visual linkages and sense of security are directly linked as more are the visual connections of spaces people will gets more familiar to the place and will occupy the space. Transitional spaces in the complex are helping the person to orient every time entering a new space. path Levels of complex Pause

The entire experience of the complex, starting from Entrance to the Mosque is associated with visual, physical and perceptual aspects. There is constant dialogue of an individual with the built environment while moving in the spaces. The carved stone grills create an atmosphere of tranquility, which serves as a great retreat for people seeking peace. The movement in the complex after the entrance are sequentially revealed and people have multiple choices for approaching the structures. The Saints tomb, Baradari, Portico, and ghat to water tank are linked through one axis. Due to this uniform connectedness, the place is perceived more easily.

3 Gandhi Ashram Centre for Environment Education Sarkhej Roza The study emphasizes importance of experience in space. The space occupancy and pause in journey is opposite to the movement in built environment. Hence to analyze the experience which is evoked within the built environment one needs to understand the characteristics of occupiable environments as well as movement. 1. Sequence of spaces (open, semi-open, built) 2. Movement of spaces 3. Pause points 4. Transition spaces 5. Visual linkages 6. Space occupiability by people 7. Kinesthetics Case Studies: Framework of Analysis: Sarkhej Roza, Ahmedabad

All built form though not having any order of placement, still gives sense of connection as all the built forms have sloping roof with country tiles as roofing material and height of all spaces are almost similar. Also the red color on sides of the plinth defines the built forms. The scale of the spaces are very humane with no empowering massive structure in the ashram which is depicting the simplicity of gandhiji. The pleasant sound of birds makes the experience of the ashram very gradual.

The experience of gandhi ashram is very simple and shuttle. The atmosphere of the ashram is very live with people using different areas for sitting, talking, enjoying the sabarmati river view, reading and many other activities. The spaces in the museum mostly remain shaded for the entire day and also there are plinths to sit due to which people usually use the semi open spaces for reading and talking. Also the linear avenue after the entrance which has plinths are used by people to interact.

There is no order in the placement of the built forms. There are two main axis formed in the ashram, one is the path parallel to the museum connecting visually to the river and another is the path connecting magan niwas, hriday kunj, vinoba kutir and nandini guest house. There is no defined path in the ashram other than in the museum.

4 Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad N

There are pause points mostly at the sign boards and the plinths where one can sit and rest. Also people pause to see the view of sabarmati river.

The main transition in the ashram is the buffer created by parking from the road and main ashram campus. Other transitional spaces are at the plinths or steps before entering any spaces. There is overall less visual connection due to scattered built forms and plantation.

The Centre for Environment Education as the name suggest is the centre for awareness of people towards the environment by educating them. So the site is basically a forest with slopes.

Starting from the entrance gate till the main the central admin court one has various paths to choose from to reach the court. The paths are passing through the spaces transiting from outside to inside to outside. The pause points and transitional spaces are either at the courts or before entering the closed/semi open spaces. There is very less visually connecting spaces due to high level differences and also plantation. The analysis for people occupying different spaces was not mentioned as this is not an public institute where people occupies different outdoor spaces other than office spaces. The only time people are seen is during lunch or break time.

The spaces are crafted amalgamating the nature into it and hence person always feels into the nature all the time.

Play of light and shadow giving directionality View of the junction which makes the person pause Low height of tree canopy, feels like to be in forest

The built mass are break down into parts from the lintel level to create less massive forms which does not overpower the nature.

Also use of pergola as an element breaks down the mass. Due to the use of ramps at various places, the person does not realize the amount of distance he traveled in the campus. The sound of birds and various insects along the smell of the humid atmosphere makes the campus very silent and makes the journey of person very experiential. Ahmedabad BB’

G. Path-space relationship: The place where the three types of relations are found creates more experiential journey.

- Light from skylights creates feeling of hope from darkness.

- Patterns also can direct the movement of person.

3. Perceptual comfort

4. Possibility of meaningful activities

1. WhetherMovement:themovement is forced or by choice there is going to be different experiences in different buildings. At public place like sarkhej roza there is choice in movement and in gandhi ashram people generally follow the sign boards to move around. In CEE though having multiple paths to choose to reach particular space, due to its institutional nature having office spaces daily user move through particular pathway only.

- Physical comfort is equally important to the environmental comfort.

5. Spatial Qualities: They are the qualities found in any built environment which enhances the experiential quality. These qualities can not separated from each other. The color of material also has some textural effect. Similarly patterns in space can be due to play of light and shade only. Even compactness and release can be due to rhythmic patterns formed by series of column.

- Overhead planes can create flow of movement in particular direction

A. Composition of point and surfaces in space:

- It is very essential quality of any space. Certain type of scale and proportions can generate various feeling inside a person where some of them are curious, cozy, comfortable, uncomfortable and so on.

- The another aspect is the functionality of spaces. The mosque is Religious realm where only prayers are done. Where the central court is multi functional in nature. CEE is an institute having offices as main functional spaces. Due to this the people works in their respective offices only unless they come out to occupy outside spaces in tea breaks or lunch hours.

If the parameters of space occupiability are to be arranged in decreasing order, then following can be the sequence: 1. Safety perception 2. Environmental comfort and physical comfort

4. Visual connections and space occupiability: - It can be inferred that more is the visual connections of spaces, more is the sense of security, more is the space occupied by the people.

Inferences

6

- It is the quality which needs to be kept in mind while designing to create different experiences in spaces.

- It can be seen where there is play of light and shadow, change in enclosure, variation in width of passage or height of -spaces.Release in space acts as breathing space from compactness.

3. Transitional Spaces: The transitional spaces makes person ready for the upcoming change in the character of space. It can be at various space in built environment: A. Entrance space from outer road to inner environment B. The ghats and jarukha for looking at the water body C. Semi open spaces acts as transitional between closed and open space or between two closed or open spaces. D. Small courts as transitional space Steps and texture difference generally acts as thresholds.

B. Scale and proportion:

- The column, dome, trees all can act as focal points in space.

- Series of beams and column can act as visual frames to focus a particular element or space.

- Boundaries can be marked by variation in either color, material or texture.

E. Compactness and release:

D. Color, Material and Texture:

- Taking example of Sarkhej roza the central court is used by more numbers of people where the mosque court is not all used unless on special occasions. - In gandhi ashram people occupy the benches placed in the avenue.

2. Pause Points: They can be at: A. Before approach of place B. Before entering semi open and closed space from open space, before entering closed space from semi open space, after entering open space from closed space and in semi open space C. Before climbing up the steps D. Looking at good view E. At the seats under the shade to sit F. After entering the place G. Looking at sign boards for the further path to choose H. At landing of the steps

F. AxialApproach:approach directly into dark spaces make person curious about the internal spaces. Similarly indirect approach from road also makes person curious. Direct approach with only gate needs another transitional space.

- Spaces without light are dead.

C. Light, shade and patterns: - Play of light in any space can make the space come alive. The glistening light from jali cast various patterns on floor and walls which makes the person move in that direction.

- Path pass by the spaces - Path pass through the spaces - Path terminates in the space

- Thoughtful arrangement of walls guides the movement in built environment.

- The material difference or color variation can be used to distinguish various elements in space. Also to highlight or attract people towards certain spaces color or material or texture variation can be done.

- Series of points acts as wall which emphasize the linearity of the space

There is all the required public facilities in reach of 1.5 - 2 km like hospital, school, college, temple, garden, public transport, post office etc. The new 150 ft ring road is 2.5 km away from the site which also helps to get easily connected to shapar industrial area. The area around is mostly residential and on the other side of the site is farm lands. For all human beings in social housing the open spaces are important part of their life styles. The open spaces which are shared keeps them connected. Also some of the house were eliminated from the floor for giving semi-open spaces where some of the activities in groups can be performed. Some of the dwellings are on ground as there is high value of ground in Indian culture.

This project was briefed to design housing for middle income group in Rajkot city. Rajkot is the 4th largest city in Gujarat and it act as an industrial, economic and educational hub of the saurashtra region. As people migrate from villages and town to urban area seeking for more opportunities and better facilities, there is need of social housing.

Porbandar The porbandar is located on the seashore from two sides. Due to this the main occupation of people living there is fishing, building ships, and trading. Streets of old porbandar are very narrow and all streets are interconnected. The ‘Ghodo Pathar’ is very famous stone found here, which is used in constructing most of the houses. The floor is made by the ‘Tipani’ technique where the floor is beaten by wooden sticks known as tipani. There are various community residing in porbandar mainly known as bhatia, vaniya, lohana, meman, kharva, kharvi which results in variation of house types. The houses are built on high plinths, below this the underground water tank is built to store fresh water collected from flat roofs. The Waddington Gymnasium was established on 27 February, 1903 and the foundation stone was laid by H.O.Quin I.C.S. acting agent to the governor, in kathiawar. The building is in modular construction. Majorly the building is a load bearing structure and later renovated so the roof is made from corrugated sheet and steel truss. The spanning elements are all arches and they are of constant size. Presently according to the need the corridors are being closed by brick masonry and are used as storage space for sports equipments. The vault in the north and south facade has thick columns which transfers the load and also acts as buttress. Also the large windows in the north and south are the only source of light in gymnasium presently. The mezzanine floor and the corridors might be RSP - Waddington Gymnasium, RKC-Rajkot for watching the games being played at that time.
