Performance Through Knowledge

Breakthrough Solution For Maritime Training Launched Videotel Performance ManagerTM was officially launched on the first day of London International Shipping Week, in September. Seen as a breakthrough solution for maritime training, Videotel Performance Manager is a first in the maritime industry, combining the extensive range of awardwinning training content from VideotelTM with the power of web-based data analytics. By providing maritime managers with insights about their fleets’ training activities, Videotel Performance Manager is designed to help increase operational efficiency, safety, and crew performance. The cloudbased software platform ensures that a crew’s latest training records are accessible

from any web-enabled device, and interactive dashboards present easy-toview data about crew performance, skill levels, strengths, weaknesses, and training schedules. At the core of Videotel Performance Manager’s cutting-edge training management tools is the user-friendly web application, which was developed with input from maritime training professionals. Key features include: • Crew Management – for managing seafarers’ training programmes as they move from vessel to vessel • Training Reports – for seeing what training is being carried out, where, and by whom, and for generating evidence of compliance required during an external audit or ship inspection • Schedule Builder – for creating training plans for seafarers based on an established safety management system • Performance Monitoring – for tracking progress of crew against a recommended schedule of training

“The ability to quickly see the training status of all seafarers in a fleet provides important advantages for a maritime training manager,” says Mark Woodhead, KVH senior vice president, EMEA. “With an easy-to-use dashboard, the manager can assess the precise level of a crew’s training, preparation, and compliance, which ultimately helps to keep operating costs low, and reduce safety and financial risk. This isn’t just recordkeeping, it’s valuable intelligence for maritime training managers.”

Training Crew to Reduce the Risk of a Cyber Attack In the light of high profile ransomware and other cyber security breaches, the shipping industry is taking action to protect companies and their fleets from threats. Indeed, ensuring that cyber security procedures are properly addressed in the ship’s Safety Management System (SMS) will soon be mandatory.

KVH Videotel’s new ‘Cyber Security At Sea’ programme, produced with BIMCO, will provide all seafarers on vessels of all kinds, plus shore-based managers, with training on: the nature of cyber security threats; how to assess the risks to the ship’s IT and OT (operational technology); how the risks to individuals and ships can be reduced and how to respond to a cyber security breach or attack. Specifically, the programme covers the following key regulations: • • 

ISM Code (MSC.428(98) Maritime Cyber Risk Management in Safety Management Systems) MSC-FAL.1/Circ.3 Guidelines on maritime cyber risk management ISO/IEC 27001 – Information Security Management, 2013

NEWS FROM KVH News: Advanced Network and TracPhone V7-HTS System

Training Spotlight LNG Bunkering – Respond Level Training course As an increasing numbers of ships are now using LNG as a bunker fuel in order to meet the low sulphur targets required by MARPOL Annex VI, this eLearning course provides those involved in the bunkering process with specialised training to ensure trouble free procedures. In addition, other personnel on board or in ports where such bunkering operations take place will also need to understand the hazards associated with LNG bunkering and be trained in how to respond to emergency situations. The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) has defined this category as a Respond Level and this course is based on the SGMF Competency and Assessment Guidelines. Its aims are to ensure that the user is trained within the SGMF Guidelines and to provide a record of this training. The course can be used on board ship or ashore and is designed for individual self-study.

KVH recently announced a high-speed overlay to its current mini-VSAT BroadbandSM service, which is expected to triple, and in some cases increase by a multiple of six, the data speeds for its maritime customers, giving KVH the largest Ku-band network offering 10 Mbps speeds to each terminal. This enhanced service is designed to enable significant improvements in business productivity in the commercial maritime world, and greatly improve the onboard experience for superyachts and recreational boats. KVH also added 25 million square miles to its already industry-leading Ku-band coverage. At the core of its capabilities, KVH’s advanced maritime broadband service incorporates Intelsat EpicNG HTS satellite services, featuring Ku-band services including IntelsatOne Flex, a global managed service designed to optimize bandwidth allocations while giving service providers flexible coverage wherever it is needed. KVH’s advanced network also includes increased capacity from SKY Perfect JSAT’s extensive fleet of satellites for unique Asian capacity. KVH also introduced the TracPhone® V7-HTS system, a new 60 cm, Ku-band satellite antenna system enabling leisure boaters and commercial mariners to stream HD content and conduct video calls at sea while simultaneously supporting a free, unlimited data channel. The TracPhone V7-HTS achieves data speeds of 10 Mbps shore to ship, and 3 Mbps ship to shore; in addition, the TracPhone V7-HTS includes unique hybrid airtime plans that deliver a free unlimited data channel that runs at the same time as the high-speed data channel, another industry first. The faster data speeds are accomplished by a combination of the company’s proprietary antenna system design and KVH’s industry-leading mini-VSAT Broadband network.

Hello Nautilus Crew, You’re Connected KVH has announced a partnership with Ocean Exploration Trust (OET), the international scientific research organisation founded by RMS Titanic discoverer and renowned oceanographer Dr. Bob Ballard, to provide services and products to enhance the onboard experience for OET’s research team. In exchange, the team will provide firsthand feedback on various products that KVH develops.

TEAM

Content Corner Creative Content Director, Raal Harris talks about training trends of Generation Z

Sundeep Sequeira What is your role at Videotel? As General Manager I look after Videotel’s business in Singapore and neighbouring countries extending into Australia and New Zealand. My roles and responsibilities include acquiring new subscribers & managing the accounts and needs of current subscribers. We are a team of 11 in the KVH Regional HQ of Singapore and work alongside the Marine Broadband Team.

How long have you worked for the company? I am on my 7th year with the organisation.

What is the best thing about your job? Meeting people, understanding their motivations, gathering their training needs and engineering a solution that aligns with the needs and meets the objectives.

We should be wary of making generalisations in an industry as diverse and international as ours is, but there are trends that we need to be aware of. The big change is that the new generation are digital natives; they have been brought up in a world completely different from preceding generations. Generation Z has completely different preconceptions of how information is generated and distributed, they expect things to look good and work well and they quickly lose interest in things that don’t make the grade. This generation is not as passive as previous ones, they want to be involved and be creative, to personalise their experience and leave their mark. That means that as well as providing excellent mandatory training, we need to provide them with a kind of web-like experience on board; a digital library of resources that they can browse, investigate and satisfy their curiosity with.
