O W that peace is here again and the tumult and the shouting of Victory Night

has died away, many of us are beginning to experience an unanticipated sense of lost directives. W e came to school with the one clear purpose in view of acquiring knowledge and technical skill so that we might play a useful part in producing or operating the mechanisms by which modern wars are won. This was an immediate and completely satisfying aim, co-ordinating mental, bodily, and spiritual effort.

Consequently, the sudden ending of hostilities has left us f o r a time like rudderless ships, spasmodically effective, sails intermittently filling and flapping.

Some among us have already substituted for this war-time objective the common and limiting one of getting out of the school just those things which will ensure the holding down of a comfortable job later on. Hence the fluctuating interest in certain studies and activities that do not directly assist in achieving this aim. Others would seek inspiration in the belief that our studies are preparing us t o make some contribution, however small, t o scientific and technical advance; but when we read about that latest achievement of science and engineering, the atomic bomb, and realize its potentialities for destroying man and all his works, "The C l o u d c a p p ' d towers, the gorgeous The solemn temples, the great globe

we begin to realize the futility of those whose "vision is machines for making more machines."

It is obvious, of course, that the potentialities of the atomic bomb f o r human good are equally tremendous with its potentialities for evil; and it is a fact that when certain qualities of mind and character, necessary in the great host of research workers who brought it into being, are more generally present in ordinary men and women, then its mis-use for purposes of war will be rendered impossible. Let us, therefore, study the works of our great scientists and engineers, not to acquire knowledge as an end in itself, far less as a qualification for a comfortable job, but deliberately to cultivate these saving qualities — the passionate love of truth which arove them on to new discoveries, their willingness to co-operate with one another, and their readiness to apply what they had learnt in public service despite the apathy or, as in Pasteur's case for instance, the active hostility of those in authority.

A n d let us not neglect the opportunities that sport provides, and the other extracurriculum activities here, for applying in our social relations this love of truth which spurns the promptings of self-interest and all such tendencies t o prejudice, this willingness t o co-operate with others in advancing the common good, and this readiness to roll up our sleeves and tackle the job we see needs doing, instead of passing by on the other side, or idly waiting for the authorities t o do something about it.

Insofar as we acquire and demonstrate these qualities, bit t o ensure that such ominous achievements of science and atomic bomb will not accomplish man's destruction, but will world whose wonders will dwarf the imaginings of the most

we shall be doing our technology as the new usher in a brave new idealistic romancers.

Salute To The Services W e deeply regret having to record the deaths of two of the very gallant gentlemen depicted in last year's "Salute to the Services."

Our former Registrar, Alan Smith, has been presumed dead, following his capture at Rabaul.

Alan was a good scout in every sense of the term, and we miss him badly.

W e take this opportunity to convey our sincere sympathy to his relatives.

He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.

The fate of Andrew ("Curley") Lewis has recently been discovered by R.A.A.F. authorities. " C u r l e y " paid the supreme sacrifice in Java during February, 1942, when a party of men were ambushed by the Japanese just before the capitulation.

W e join in the sorrow of his wife, relatives, and many friends.

His life was gentle, and the elements So mix'ci in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, "This was a man."

Others who have paid the supreme sacrifice are Flying Officer Jack Liversidge, Flying Officer Harry Poulter, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Storey, Captain Alan Trenwith, and Pilot Officer Jim Maclellan.

Among the many O l d Boys who have distinguished themselves and returned to our midst is Captain Dick Eason, who led the victorious school football team in 1930. Dick, who later played League football with Footscray, was awarded the M . C .

SquadronLeader Ken W a t t s has returned home from a P.O.W. camp in Germany.

Ken was awarded the D.F.C. for gallantry and leadership in the Italian campaign.

Humphrey Anchen, whose name appears on the t o p of the honour board, has also returned from Germany.

He was captured early in the war in the Greek campaign.

Major Jock M c G r a t h is shortly returning' from an important radar job with the Royal Navy in the Pacific.

The Office Staff

and as for the lady herself, her head has been in the clouds ever since. Dorothy always wears, in addition to her figure, a nice blue smock, which holds on tight going around the curves. She'll shortly be giving her fiance that married look. Another member of the staff, also attractive to the oomph degree, is Elsie. Q u i t e a lot of our students have taken a platonic interest in Elsie—play for them, tonic for her.

She really does our eyes a favour, but we do wish that a certain young man would not keep her out late at night; the other night her mother sent her to bed without breakfast. Then there's Betty.

She has a nice sense of rumour, and most of the day is wrapped in male glances. A f t e r all, the objective of " h e " is "she," and Betty seems just the right age.

One young man is a persistent admirer, but she discourages him with a firm hand. It looks as if it won't be the hand that rocks his cradle. The newest addition to the ranks of office staff feminity is Audrey. This girl is definitely pinuptious.

She listens with rapt inattention to telephone messages, from which she makes anagrams which give hours of pleasant pastime in decoding.

Audrey has climbed the social ladder, lad by lad. She may often be found in the back storeroom duplicating or something. You know, women were made before mirrors and have been before them ever since.

One of the mysteries in the administration of the School is the function of the Office Staff.

As our accompanying picture shows, they would be a decided acquisition to any school, even if they d i d n ' t function.

It has always been part of our tradition that the feminine members should be the fairest in the land, to be adopted and championed by students and staff alike.

The most envied person in the School is our Registrar, Mr. Horrie Low, who benignly controls—during public service hours, anyway — t h e activities of this efficient and decorative staff. He is well qualified for such a job, as he spent some years as an instructor at Pentridge and Castlemaine Reformatory, and his tactful handling of recalcitrant youth is evidenced by the complete harmony prevailing in the office. W e were very pleased to welcome him to our midst, as, for some time past, several of the students had suffered fraternization bans which, in desperation, almost drove them to study.

Despite the enormous numbers in the School, man in the mass is more interested in female people than in his own sex, so that some little time must be set aside for the tired students, and the not-too-tired teachers, t o bask in the sunshine of feminine smiles.

The remaining two ladies are married. Hazel recently took the plunge with a young naval chap, and has just left us. She had a bonzer wedding. Hazel made a lovely bride in white gingham or something, while the bridesmaids' gowns were punk. It was one of those weddings where it is kisstomary to cuss the bride.

When things get very busy in the office, Elva comes along and straightens them out.

As soon as a student enters the School, he is card-indexed, checked and double-checked, crossed and finally double-crossed by some fair member of the office staff.

O f the personnel we are, for security and safety reasons, permitted to say very little.

The serenity of the office was recently thrown out of gear by the engagement of Jean to one of our former students.

The gentleman in question is Keith Brown, and we wish them both every happiness. A f t e r all, you never know what happiness is until you get married—and then it's too late. Another recent excuse for a party was the news that Dorothy's fiance was returning safe, sound and single from a P.O.W. camp in Singapore.

A L D A G , John Adrian

BALL, Herbert George

Accent o n t h e "dag."

Actually, as if to confound the nomenclature, John is really a serious-minded young man with a wide open face.

North of the eyes, everything functions perfectly.

He has wended his way through the diploma course without any unnecessary stoppages.

His sporting activities include tennis and athletics, and his spare time is intimately connected with quiz sessions and brains trusts.

In tracing his career from Trafalgar School to our own abode, we find that Yallourn Tech. looms importantly.

He refuses to disclose any vices, whilst as for girls, he wouldn't touch them with a flamethrower. John rocks in questions to all and sundry, believing that even if bread is the staff of life, there is no reason why the life of the staff should be one long loaf. A f t e r three years in these learned precincts, he will grace the portals of any engineering institution.

Arrived in Bendigo aged zero some 17 years ago. A f t e r spending some time in that city of gold and glamour, Bert descended to Brunswick Tech., and then, in desperation, finally came to the queen city of the s o u t h — t h e Birmingham of Australia.

Renowned for passing examinations in the face of terrific opposition, he discovered t h a t our secret weapon is really a Ford and not a V2 bomb.

A thoughtful, pedantic sort of bloke, Bert tends to spend his days in solitary refinement.

G i f t e d with a placid nature, he's so contented that if he were a cow he'd give cream.

His laboratory records are masterpieces of invention and art; they ought to be, anyway, judging by the time of their preparation.

In Maths, he finds the hours crawl by like paralytic centipedes. Not that he 'is a clock watcher.

A f t e r all, a worker who persists in looking at the clock usually remains one of the hands.

FATCHEN, Walter James

LITTLE, Thomas Rex Rex hails from Beechworth, famous for its gold rushes and bull finches, or gold finches and bull rushes — I forget which.

It is also famous for its gaol, but we are sure that Rex has so far not suffered incarceration, although he's had measles, whooping cough and mumps.

His name is synonymous with his stature, and is in direct contrast to his achievements. W i t h honours thick upon him, he d r i f t e d our way from W a n g a r a t t a Tech., and is rapidly assimilating the finer points of engineering.

W i t h the tremendous activity of a small boy sitting still, Rex wriggles and squirms in class, and babbles like a pneumatic drill. However, he's as genuine as a fingerprint, and we're pleased t o have him with us.

Born some 18 years ago, to j^, • • • standard proportions, W a l t e r has since developed laterally rather than longitudinally. His contours indicate that he takes his daily dozen with a knife and fork. A f t e r a distinguished career at Preston Tech., W a l t e r decided t o give Footscray a break, and descended on us in seven easy lessons. He is inclined to regard his Maths, teacher as Mandrake, but in his opinion the rest of the staff have housemaid's knee or astigmatism, or something. " A l l the W o r l d is mad 'cept me and thee A n d even thee's a little strange . . . "

He studies from late in the morning till early at night, and believes the chief aim of education is to be able to fill in forms.

examiners is shown by the number of credit passes he achieved while at W a n g . In fact, we're a bit afraid that our local lads may take the knock this year when it comes to dux.

Ray has a peculiar ambition.

He wants to be a teacher.

If passing exams means anything, we hope he gives the good oil to his students.

He has completely revolutionized the diploma school conventions by studying at home. Is a bit slow getting the strength of the mathematical racket, but he'il be there when the whips are cracking.

W i t h a name like that, we forecast that Bob will go far, r provided he is not crushed under the dead weight of prestige.

Down on the farm at Toora, his arrival caused quite a stir, and immediately put the poddy-calf's nose out of joint.

He was relegated to our Junior School quite early in life, and as an embryo engineer was conspicuous only by his abstinence. When he wears glasses, Bobbie looks really intelligent, but it's only an optical illusion.

His scholastic prowess has earned him scholarships and things, but these have left him quite unspoiled. In class, he keeps the corners of his mouth up and his voice down, and sits as relaxed as a pound of liver.

He looks a bit like Frank Swoonatra, but we must let Bobbie down lightly. Bobby socks.

WHITAKER,

WILLS, John Lawrence The fame of Footscray has spread to far-off Toowoomba, and John's parents, tuning in on their secret radio, heard of the Institution where "Knowledge is Power." To verify this, John was shipped South.

A f t e r a few unsuccessful attempts to acquire power in a he was reluctantly compelled to have a go at knowledge. Despite a few disagreements with examiners, he is slowly wading through a diploma course.

Actually, John doesn't wade.

H e ' d swim, even if the water was only ankle-deep.

Certainly, in the school swimming sports, he didn't bother to submerge, but just skidded along the t o p of the water without upsetting his blonde perm.

That's what comes of mixing with crocodiles and sharks in Queensland, where a slow swimmer is soon a dead one.

Robert James

The stork stalled and crashed in Chelsea in 1927, giving to the world—Bob. He has long since refuted the unkind crack that the stork which brouqht him should have been arrested for smuggling dope.

From Northcote H i g h School, Bob's rollicking baritone breezed into the Footscray Rest Home where it acts as the chief crutch to the Glee Club. His oratorios are ambitious, but really give us some painless ear-bashing. Victim of a quick romance, Bob has a platonic interest in an attractive blonde.

Gentlemen prefer blondes, but all the same it's funny the number of blondes that don't seem t o prefer gentlemen.

Bob does an occasional spot of work and before an examination will study all niqht for three-quarters of an hour.

BROUSHTON,

PEARCE, Henry McRae From far off Myrtleford, Mac went to Wangaratta Tech., from where he joined the invasion of Footscray. His course has got as involved as spaghetti, and it will be a year before he really sees the light.

The W a n g , boys are gregarious animals, and certainly made their presence felt at our benevolent institution.

Like his colleagues, Mac does a spot of study at home, to the great consternation of the locals. On leaving home, his parents bid him have a good time, and be a good boy. Mac can't make up his mind.

Elucidator of the query about the centre ball of the pawnbroker's sign hanging lower than the ball on either side, Mac's bland denouement brings many maledictions on his serene head.

Raymond George

Tasmania first became aware of Ray in 1927, and it was in that land of sparkling Cascade brew that he commenced his scholastic career.

Migrating to Wangaratta, he adorned the technical institution there, and it was not until the commencement of this year that his homing instinct prevailed, and he alighted on our doorstep.

His ability to trick the 8

to boot. W e expect to see him next year as Mathematics has really got him in. A f t e r t'hree years at Algebra, he still does not know the difference between a and b, although he does know that plus b is greater than minus b.

A f t e r all, Mathematics is awfully simple, as evidenced by G.M.'s definition of a logarithm: " A logarithm of a number to a given base is the index of the power to which fhe base must be raised to produce the given number."

Most of us have forgotten how to raise the base anyway.

BRYANT, Gilbert James

Another refugee from Wangaratta, Frank is rapidly fitting into the new life at Footscray.

He has been to various places to learn the tricks of the trade, but now seems properly anchored. He finds Footscray a humdinger place, with an atmosphere as pure and unsullied as at W a n g . A little diffident about disseminating information, he makes carefully guarded statements in reply to thermodynamic queries; in fact, he umphasizes every word.

Frank is very modest, and is never so happy as when communing with nature in the rustic surroundings of his native heath.

Very shy and retiring, he finds comfort in the knowledge that the most fluent talkers, the most plausible reasoners, are not always the justest thinkers.

SHELTON, Ernest George Imbued with the importance f -

Gil spent his early youth round about Colac, but he soon sickened of small-town life and migrated to Wesley.

While there, he acquired an interest in engineering, so naturally gravitated to our institution. He is affectionately known as Handle-bar Hank, owing to his reluctance to shave the whole of his face at once. He's got a way of looking into a girl's eyes that makes her completely forget his whiskers. Gil is booked for early matrimony, as a certain atomic blonde in Tasmania can well' testify.

He finds long and arduous study is not necessary to pass examinations, as a little technical skill in illegibility of handwriting gets by most tests.

One of our most conscientious prefects, we'll certainly miss G i l when he decides to adorn the engineering profession.

R I C H A R D S O N , William John

no short cut. The multiplication table has got to be learned. It is said that even Einstein knows it all.

Em found that at the Tech. students are natural mimics.

They act like their teachers, in spite of all efforts to teach them good manners. As a prefect, Ern takes an active interest in the important things, such as concerts, sports, excursions, etc.

Believing that nothing succeeds like excess, he blitzkrieged the Met. lie. examination, and topped the class by sheer weight of paper.

Ern can hold his tongue in seven languages.

F O U N T A I N , Geoffrey Stanley Skipping Geoff.'s early life, r since little is known beyond the fact that he was born, we shall touch lightly on his holiday at Brighton Tech., and pass on to his life with us.

Taking about 10 in boots, he is easily distinguished by his cheery grin, mass of curly hair, and altitude.

For some ridiculous reason, Bill was born at Caulfield, but has since absolved himself by sheltering in our cloisters in quest of a diploma. So far, his search has been successful, as the examiners pass him on with their b l e s s i n g .

His treatises on Heat Engines are as confusing as peace treaties, some of his ideas being as obsolete as the Atlantic Charter.

At study he is as zealous as a dog on a flea hunt', although much of his zeal is instinctive.

Is inclined t o dream in class, though even his dreams are in technicolour.

In pursuing his ambition, Bill will undoubtedly make the grade.

You know, Bill, happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of travelling.

complex. In fact, it had to be pushed up t o Gilwell recently.

Remember Stenis, if you drive like Hell, you'll get there. He adopts a radical coiffure which sometimes gets to a point where he's got to g e t a haircut or a violin. He takes an active interest in politics and has learnt how to save face with indifferent examination results.

He emulates a famous politician who tries t o save both faces.

Despite his political bias, Stenis is convinced that any system of government will work if the people do.

OATES, William Laurence

M A T T O N , William George A product of our own Junior School, Bill has accumulated a wealth of knowledge due to his steady and persistent staying power.

His interest in sport, concerts and other things that matter have not prevented him from being dux of his class for the last two years. In Mathematics, he offers a difficulty for every solution, and confounds his teacher by his misdirected zeal for the truth.

One thing we have always admired about Bill is his ability to bite off more than he can chew, and then chew it. At" tennis he is a wow.

Like Napoleon, he has a cannon ball serve which intimidates the opposition, even though it never goes in. Bill realizes that there are three things that a man must do if he is to achieve success, namely—work, work, work.

Whether or not Bill sowed his wild oats on the farm at Wangaratta, we are not permitted to ask, but we certainly are pleased to have him with us.

He is that tall, genial chap you see wandering around with a panoramic smile that uses up a lot of face. Spends his spare time playing tennis and cricket.

At Wang., he was known as Laurie, but for security reasons changed to Bill on entering our August portals. A leader of men and a follower of women.

Is tenacious and as persistent as whiskers, and tracks down the elusive laboratory results to the third decimal place.

Unfortunately, they're not always right.

W e believe he sings a little.

One of the most important things about singing is the execution.

Far too many singers escape it.

ELLIOT, Robert Bruce Bob first saw the light at our own Junior School in 1940.

He was born in Footscray some 12 years before that, and immediately intimated to his proud parents that here was another mouth to feed.

His efforts to hoodwink the examiners have met with a fair amount of success, and to-day we see him on the threshold of an engineering career. His carefree attitude to study somewhat affects his examination results, but he'll get +here just the same. He just acquires the crudiments of a subject and a perfect sense of what not to say — then says it. However, where would we be without a little bull? Bob does not take himself too seriously, and before an examination — like the condemned man — he cats a hearty meal.

Since his appearance in last year's " W h o ' s W h o , " Len has attained the honour of prefectship and house captaincy, and has spread his benign influence in an impartial and kindly manner. Although very busy with his subjects, he can always find time for an extra job of work, and despite a certain affinity for the A r t storeroom, seems to be among those present when most needed. Actually, Len was only a goat-between the G r a d e IV. Drawing students and certain irate instructors. However, he's now settled down to a steady routine, and is as comfortable as a bad habit.

PASHALLIS, Stenis Arthur Stenis hails from Williamstown, so that, naturally, his sporting interests lie in the realms of oxide of hydrogen, where he nobly emulates the seal — except, perhaps, in length of whisker. He is not a lazy man, nevertheless he doesn't like work. Is sometimes seen driving the family car, which suffers from the same

Rumours concerning John's past date back to 1927, and can be investigated out Preston way.

A t Preston Tech., he absorbed sufficient knowledge to aspire to Footscray's diploma, and he has steadily, without evasion and equivocation, ploughed through all the ritual necessary to become an engineer. In Elec. Tech., he somewhat flabbergasts the Doctor by his enthusiasm for that elusive and imaginary " j . " Sometimes, his conversation puis a terrifice strain on the eyebrows. His essays are heavenly, or at least like nothing on earth.

Does not aspire to be Superman, but just sits in class buttoned up in an impenetrable little coat of complacency. His main interest is becoming an obsession — passing the finals. r

MORELLATO, Cyril Siro Cyril came to the big smoke from where it grows—Wangaratta. In fact, he not only grows tobacco, but surreptitiously consumes it. He's just a bit effeminate, as he rolls his ^ A B own : using the Ladies' Home Journal f o r cigarette papers.

When the effect of this jungle juice wears off, we find Cyril a really solid lad, full of the right sort of corpuscles. In his youth he suffered from colour blindness—thought all girls were green. However, he's got over that now, and although temporarily out of ardour, will shortly queue up again and slip his head in the bridal slipknot, after which he should be as long-lived as a war criminal.

Cyril patented two inventions; dehydrated water, and a machine which detects lies. He certainly won't need the latter when he marries.

W I L L C O X , Stanley Reginald Meet a man who can't take a hint. The Katamatite boy bobs up again complete with blonde coiffure and examination antipathy. Following the publishing of results last year, Stan decided to learn singing. A f t e r rendering a few derangements of an old favourite, he decided to come back and finish the diploma. W e ' r e

pleased to have him. A f t e r all, experience is the best of all schoolmasters, but his fees are high. All you need, really, to spur you on is a kick in the seat of the can'ts. Stan's idea ("Who's W h o , " 1944), of leaving milk in the cows was not a success. W i t h the passing of the cows, he's had to resort to margarine—for butter or for worse. He is very popular with his colleagues, in fact, in a popularity poll, he'd gallup home.

With his perse and poisonality, Stan will go a long way, even if he finishes up as a film star.

PRETTY, Allen B. Well, we've been wrong about the "B" all these years; actually, it stands for Burton.

As our portrait shows, the conformation of his head indicates what is called by biologists, the Homo Sapiens.

Rumours concerning his past date back to 1927 when he had his first spanking. Box Hill High School gently pushed him to our portals armed with Leaving Certificate. Producer of school concerts, captain of the tennis team, and a rover scout, Allen has lived a full life. When we top-dressed the school court, he offered to mark it out, first working out the measurements with a logarithm. All he required were an hypotenuse and two angles. While he was preparing to mark the court with his logarithm, we marked it with whitewash. Allen's complexion is the envy of the whole of the office staff.

WILLIAMS, John Everard Born at a very early age - .. „ at Caulfield, John naturally came to the best school of all to be finished.

He has the disconcerting habit of following 'ectures closely and detecting inaccuracies in teaching.

Rarely sticks his neck out when stooging around for information, and certainly learns from his mistakes.

His chief relaxation is to curdle up with a good murder mystery.

If an infinite capacity for taking pains is the criterion of genius, John is one out of the box.

Easily t o p p e d the class in A p p l i e d Mechanics last examination.

A very modest young fellow, he believes that the surest way to be taken in is to think yourself cleverer than others. A n y rate, it's a clever thing to hide one's cleverness, 11

In Sunshine, the name of j/tPjk* McKay is synonymous with « * stump-jump ploughs, and Jack certainly is keeping up the f« _ .a family traditions. In the school sports he threw himself over a few hurdles and things in a most ungainly but successful manner. If we gave "blues" for athletics he'd certainly be a blue boy. None of the famous McKay ploughs could dodge stumps with the same agility that Jack dodges trouble.

He is a kindly soul, serene and unruffled, who believes that it is easier to be critical than correct. He has been shaving for ten years and hasn't cut himself either time. He objects to wisecracks, particularly about harvesters.

OXLEY, Arthur David.

FLOCKHART, Maxwell Gordon As we predicted in last year's " W h o ' s W h o , " Max was considered too young to be consigned C . H . W . , even though he'd completed his diploma.

This year, he is mastering the intricacies of crane design and chemistry.

Having never failed in an examination, Max can almost be called a high-brow, even though he's only sweet sixteen. Careful, Max! A highbrow is one whose education has outstripped his intelligence.

A t sport, Max excels in jumping and diving, in fact, he's always doing some physical or mental whirla-gigs. O f his romance, which we so lightly touched on last year, little may be said.

Max likes a girl with a good head on his shoulder, and at O l d Boys' functions;, he is often seen dancing cheek to cheek, from head to toe.

Well, Youth is a wonderful thing; what a crime to waste it on children.

Familiarly known as " O x " or "Bull," A r t h u r drifts around the School, carefully refraining from sticking his neck out. A polite conversationalist, he never opens his mouth unless he has nothing to say. Then he expounds theories in his own illimitable way. A serious lad, he declares that a pun is the lowest form of humour— when you don't think of it first. He tells us that the other day when it was raining cats and dogs, he accidentally stepped into a poodle. Pull your head in, Arthur! That one reeks of jungle juice, and insecticide.

Like the rest of Form VII., he works in cycles— waves of apathy and waves of oratory.

HALL, Jack Matthew W e never forget a face, but , we are willing to make an exception in this case. Since he appeared in last year's "Who's Who," Jack has sobered up considerably, and now holds the distinguished position of Captain of the School. He takes an extremely dim view of his colleagues who are not interested in our social and sporting welfare. A very natural and helpful sort of a chap, Jack is loyal to all. He believes that an intelligent man does not pose; he leaves that for the man who wishes to be thought intelligent. A f t e r all, an ounce of loyalty is worth more than a pound of cleverness.

He doesn't want to grow up to be Prime Minister. He's perfectly satisfied with Chifley. Anyway, suppose you work like blazes and get to be Prime Minister. There you're stuck. Jack's hobbies are football, cricket, athletics, fraternizing and study. A t football, he uses infiltration rather than commando tactics.

A leader in our concerts, Jack's histrionic ability rivals that of Clark Gable. G i f t e d with a good vocabulary, he works hard t o acquire technical profanity, and is politely amused by teachers straining at their adjectives.

A t the Annual Meeting held last July, it was announced that the Club's bank balance stood at £337/15/5, of which £ 2 6 3 / 1 9 / 7 had been raised during the twelve months ending 30th June. O f that sum, £250 is to be handed over to the Assembly Hall Fund. The year's activities included catering for the boys' lunches at the Annual Sports Day, organizing a Bazaar which raised £ 1 8 9 / 2 / 8 , and providing afternoon tea and supper for the School's Open Night and Exhibition of Work.

It is anticipated that the recently initiated annual envelope system will considerably augment funds during the current year.

On the previous day, we chem. students all agreed that the lab. should be given its annual clean-up, but were profoundly shocked to learn that we were the ones to do it.

As a result, corners, sinks and lockers were explored, relics of past students were removed, and spaces noted for exploitation when things became normal once again. Some students were amazed to discover that their lockers really had wooden bottoms, and that the sinks had holes for the water to drain out, and, as a result, "boat-races" were indefinitely suspended.

On Wednesday, 4th April, Mr. Herbert, of the Vacuum Oil Company, presented to the Diploma School a series of educational sound films dealing with topics relevant to our work.

The first film—"Steam Turbines and Condensers"—started from elementary principles, and by the use of models presented the operations in very clear sequences.

The reaction turbine principle was rather simply illustrated by a kettle on rollers, the rollers resting on that surface. As the steam issued from the spout, the kettle moved slowly backwards. Many pictures of sectioned turbines, showing the numerous rows of blades gradually increasing in size, were included in the film.

In construction, everything must be carefully examined and tolerances checked as minute flaws in the metal of the blades, when running at 3,000 r.p.m., may cause sufficient damage to ruin the whole turbine.

A t last our visitors began to arrive, guided by their sense of smell, and desperately clasping bottles of smelling salts. Their attention was immediately attracted to an infant in overalls, who excitedly ignited soapbubbles of gas generated by the lab. assistant. Then Mr. Brooks began manufacturing "Raspberry Vinegar" from the tap by mystical means, and reconverting it back to the original.

This achievement drew forth exclamations of wonder and delight from the audience, and loud claps and cheers from the chem. students present, who were naturally anxious to please Mr. Brooks—their chem. exam, not having yet been set.

Of great interest also, especially to the ladies, was a delightful silica garden in water, guarded by a zealous student from the prying fingers of small boys.

The afternoon proved the tremendous future for films as a means of better education.

Dull subjects, which may take hours of patient explanation, may be presented interestingly and clearly by means of films.

Finally, after inspecting other items of interest, the visitors departed, expressing amazement that such things were done outside a well-known institute at Kew.

In conclusion, Mr. Kepert expressed our gratitude for the afternoon's entertainment, and echoed our hope that there wou Id be many more of them.

The Diesel engine was next shown, and here again the simplicity of presentation enabled us to grasp the first principles of such complicated engines.

As a final iiem, Mr. Herbert showed some National Fitness films and included that national hero, Mickey Mouse.

OPEN NIGHT It was a cold night, yet long lines of people were moving in the direction of the School when, about half-past seven, I made my way under the main arch and turned left into the Machine Shop. Here, the rows of gleaming machines under the brilliant lights, the highpitched hum of gears and pulleys, and the press of people, made a picture worthy o f perpetuation on canvas. Most of the parents seemed t o have mislaid at least one o f their children, and cries of "Where's Charlie?" and " H a v e you seen Billy?" were common.

How the night passed without at least one urchin being chewed up by one of the mechanical monsters is more than I can understand.

I left him still staring into the flame, a look of profound bewilderment on his face.

Whether the steel had melted and been absorbed by the bricks, or whether it had been reduced t o gas and wafted up the chimney, I d o not know. There was a bar of what looked like mild steel leaning up against the wall beside the furnace, but, then, that was probably another bar altogether.

It is strange what a fascination destruction has for most of us. People will stand for an hour a t a time watching a house being demolished. W e like to stand at a safe distance and gape open-mouthed as a charge o f explosive is set off, and we will turn out of our warm beds to see a building on fire. These thoughts occurred t o me when, after leaving the Machine Shop, I entered t h e Testing Laboratory where the high priests o f controlled destruction were performing their rites to the great diversion of the assembled multitude. The Heat Treatment section came next.

Near the door, a furnace roared and cast a ruddy glow around the rcrom. The air was hot, and sulphurous fumes burned the throat.

I approached the white-coated guardian of the miniature Hades, " W h a t have you g o t there?" I asked. "Just a piece o f mild steel bar," he replied, and swung the door open for me t o look.

A f t e r a brief look into the Elec. Tech. Lab., I made my way t o the Heat Engines. This, too, was very popular.

The space at the top end of the room seemed t o be filled by a small "Colonial" boiler, coughing smoke and flame, and a large "Parsons" turbine, which stood grand and motionless against one wall.

I heard one gentleman remark, apropos the turbine, "It's a wonder they can get enough steam out o f that little boiler t o drive her."

If the turbine had been spinning merrily under the action o f steam from the boiler, the wonder would have been great, indeed.

The remainder of the space was taken up by horizontal and vertical steam engines, in violent motion, and emitting great clouds o f steam; and various types o f gas, kero., and petrol engines. The room was very full o f people, all intensely interested, but the heat and the steam and the water on the floor reminded me that there was much still t o see, so I made my way to the Moulding Shop.

It is said that there are people o f morbid turn o f mind who cannot be taken t o t h e top of a tall building or t h e edge of a precipice without having an overwhelming desire t o throw themselves into t h e awful depths.

Molten metal has t h e same fatal lure. Indeed, i t exercises its fascination over even a greater proportion o f the community.

The inhabitants o f Footscray are not different from the remainder of humanity in this regard, and so the Moulding Shop presented an ap-

pearance of the greatest animation. Near the entrance, two junior members of the Vulcan family were pouring white-hot metal into a mould under the direction of a third. All around stood other moulds already poured, smoke leaking out at the seams between the individual boxes. The sharp tang of sulphur was in the air. I watched the pot cool until it lost its white brilliance and took on a transparent look. I became possessed of a sudden desire to stretch out my arm and touch i t — a n d decided to leave while still safe.

The remainder of the display I will pass over lightly, as I have already taken up my allotted space. The art display, the sheetmetal exhibits and several others were all worthy of mention, but must be passed by.

It was late and the crowds began to disperse —Charlie and Billy had been recovered for the tenth time, and returned to their anxious parents. The rooms began to look as does a banquet room after the guests have gone and the soiled dishes are still lying on the table. It had been an interesting night, both to a student of engineering and to a student of human nature.

I think that industry will be well served by these young engineers, and, who knows, but among them there may be another Mitchell or a Sir John Monash.

In a glow of optimism, I stepped out into the night.

CHESS CLUB ACTIVITIES Formed in (944 to help students pass time during lunch hours on wet or cold days, the Chess Club continued its activities this year.

The official opening of the club took place on 6th March in Room .10, Up to this time, the game sets were housed in a locker in the Staff Room. Later in the year, a steel cupboard arrived and was placed in Room 10 to act as a store cupboard. Though attendances were not as large as in 1944, the club carried on, its regular players engaging in daily mental conflicts over the chess boards.

An almost daily occurrence is the bursting of paper bags by one or two players with the object of distracting the attention of other players in the room.

Club officials for 1945 were: Supervisor, Mr. F. Brooks; assistants, Messrs. Fatchen Shelton, Sawers; and the games played are Chess, Draughts, Checkers and Strategy.

Excursion to Bradford Cotton Mills On Wednesday, 2nd May, a number of earnest lads from the Tech. were treated to a Cook's tour of the Bradford C o t t o n Mills.

Guide notes briefly describing the various processes t o be seen were first distributed and solemnly absorbed.

From the time the raw cotton enters the mill until the finished article is produced, man-power is scarcely evident, the various processes being carried out by machines.

These perform the various operations of cleaning, separating and layering the fibres of raw cotton. The yarn is then wound into bobbins and despatched to the spinning department where a permanent twist is given to it, thus producing a strong thread. A f t e r passing through a number of winding processes, the spun yarn is fabricated in the form required for the manufacture of various cloths.

Further twisting of the yarn results in the production of cord used in the manufacture of tyres. Other processes seen on the tour were the manufacture and dyeing of canvas.

The highlight of the tour was the afternoon tea provided by the management, and dispensed by pretty young waitresses. Because we were too full for words, Mr. Kepert conveyed our thanks to the management and guides, and particularly the waitresses.

The excursion provided an insight into the spinning and weaving of raw cotton into yarn and cloth, although the machines which performed these operations were perhaps of greater interest than the actual spinning and weaving.

ORDNANCE PRODUCTION . .

This was the title of a most interesting lecture delivered by Mr. M. M . O'Loughlin to a number of Second and Third Year Diploma students on Wednesday, 13th June.

Mr. O'Loughlin, who is Director of Ordnance Production, and a member of the School Council, has been engaged in this t y p e of work for some time, and is in a position to give a great deal of sound and valuable advice to the budding engineers present. He considers that diploma graduates should become production managers rather than skilled workmen, and, in the light of this, it is necessary to have good leadership qualities.

In his opinion, English is a most valuable subject in the engineering course, the others serving in the majority of cases only as good basic training. The greater part of Mathematics, Heat Engines, etc., will be forgotten by a large number of students in after life, only those in specialized jobs having any use for them. Both Mr. Hoadley and Mr. Howells were immensely pleased with the importance which the lecturer attached to the English tauqht in Technical Schools.

By carrying a note-book and making notes of points that arouse one's interest, much valuable information may be gained and kept for reference when it may be needed. It is

important t h a t the young engineer should realise that actually he knows very little about the profession he has chosen, and becomes aware of the need for continued study. Mr. O'Loughlin considered it most important that an engineer should join a professional institution.

It was his opinion t h a t an engineer with a diploma and membership to an institution is for some purposes more useful than a University graduate, the practical training gained by a diploma student being more valuable in production work than that of a University student.

The lecturer concluded by summarizing the many points he made and stressing their importance.

He gave us much f o o d for thought, and his view that Australians are too easy-going on the whole found much support.

Mr. Hoadley described the lecture most aptly when he said it contained some very " m e a t y " matter.

The boys showed their appreciation of Mr. O'Loughlin's address by their enthusiastic applause at the conclusion, and there will be many engineers indebted to him for his advice on entering industry. OUR N E W S C H O O L During a social evening held early in the year, Mr. Hoadley, in responding to the toast "The School," told us something of the School's history, its present status, and of the plans for the new school in Ballarat Road.

Since its establishment in 1917, Mr. Hoadley has been associated with the School as Principal. He has seen it grow from a few rooms and f i f t y pupils to its present size, with an enrolment of nearly three thousand. The Government has never at any time been lavish in spending money on buildings, hence the demand for extra accommodation has always been ahead of supply.

Plans were several times submitted for transferring the School to the Ballarat Road site, but nothing was done.

Mr. Hoadley told us of his inspection of a school in Newcastle, N.S.W., which was once in similar circumstances to our own.

He spoke with admiration of the way they had built their new school to their own specifications.

It included all the essential features such as an Assembly Hall, Library, with a trained librarian in attendance; Students' Room, etc.

W e realize that this is the kind of school we want here in Footscray; one on which money will be freely spent. The plans for our new school provide for three main blocks, a senior boys' school, a senior girls' school, and a junior boys' school.

In addition we would like to see an Assembly Hall to seat at least one thousand, a Library with ample seating accommodation, Students' Rooms, a Projection Room, School Cafetaria, up t o ' d a t e Gymnasium, and Hobbies' Room.

Whether all these features will be provided remains to be seen, but imagine the community spirit which would develop in such an establishment, a spirit which would ideally prepare our young men and women for the community of the outside world.

W e all appreciated Mr. Hoadley's talk and resolved that we would do our best to help bring this new school into being. When the new school does come, we hope those of the fut 'ure generation who are educated in it will through improved teaching methods be able to take their place, not only as better tradesmen and workers in industry, but as better citizens, properly eguipped to take their place in the future democracy of Australia. —W.

THE DISCUSSION

GROUP.

The group consists mainly of Seventh Form boys, and is presided over by a chairman who leads the discussion. A secretary attends to correspondence and sends reports to the Broadcasting Commission, who supply the scripts and also issue periodical bulletins containing interesting report's from other groups. W e take it in turn to act as chairman and secretary.

The first series, on "Education Reforms," was led by Norm Abbey, and provided mu ch matter for discussion.

The next was on "Community Centres," and at our invitation Mr. Hoadley gave us an interesting talk on this subject.

Then followed " C o n f l i c t in Industry," "Friction in the Home," and finally "International Conflict." — M . G . F L O C K H A R T , VII. DEBATING CLUB. A t our inaugural meeting this year, we were privileged to have Mr. Knight with us to give a talk on the benefits derived from debate and discussion. He assisted, too, in the election of our office-bearers, who were: President, John Paterson; Vice-President, William M a t t o n ; Secretary, Allen Pretty.

Our programme has included debates, discussion and impromptu speeches. The subject of a debate which proved very interesting was "Should Women Have Equal Rights with Men?" It was finally decided in the affirmative. W e regret to say that of the many boys who attend our meetings, very few are interested enough to take an active part.

Let us hope that next year, this will be rectified.

W e were next treated to another orchestral item by the School Ensemble, closely followed by a vocal duet by " C h i p s " Meddings and Jack Shevels. This was pretty good, although " C h i p s " reminded us of a ventriloquist's doll.

The ancient and venerable rafters of the Royal Hall were stressed close to yieldinq point when the school concert was presented on Friday evening, 5th October. The enthuse astic applause of a packed audience almos? literally brought the house down.

Actually there were two concerts.

The first was presented on the afternoon of Thursday, 23rd August, and acted as a full dress rehearsal to the evening show. It was not really Tr> tended to function as such, but owing to V.P. Day and V.R. Day distractions, the only members to give a flawless performance were the prompters, Alan Pretty and Gordoi!

The evening concert, however, was really good.

It included a number of additional items contributed by Junior School boys from Ballarat Road and Hyde Street.

This talent was discovered by the "Sheriff of Balnarring," who laid his pistols down to take an active interest in the training of new blood. Following an instrumental number b) the School Ensemble, Form V. presented "The Boatswain's M a t e , " in which an outstanding performance was given by Pat Dunlevie, Owen Tassicker and Eric Johnson. Then followed a baritone solo by Bob Whitaker. W e grabbed nearby fire extinguishers, believing that Bob really was going to set the world on fire.

The Glee Club next showed their faces in a couple of wellrendered items, although some of the boys were ack-willy.

Following a spirited recitation by Betty, Form IV. produced out of the bag a potted pantomime, "Sinbad the Sailor."

In this item, the antics of Bill McDowell as Sinbad fairly rocked the audience, while Bob C a hill, as his mother, showed a beautiful profile all the way down. The H y d e Street Warblers then made their debut. Their rendition of "You are my Sunshine," earned wellmerited applause. These boys, whose mother?

Form VII. then presented "The Pirates."

Max Flockhart was really in his element as a swashbuckling pirate chief whose demise in A c t II. was most artistically and unexpectedly carried out. A vocal item by the Ballarat Road trio followed.

These lads, Carl Herwood, Lennie Howard and Sonny Jury, gave a delightful rendition of " C o m i n g in on a W i n g and a Prayer," the accompanists being Alan A d l e r and Arthur Shields on piano-accordeons.

W e had not expected to see Mandrake and Lothar, but bright feats of magic by Jackie Mentha and Tommy Marr bewildered us more than the adventures of those famous gentlemen.

Frank Jury, our tame boy-soprano, gave a high-class interpretation of "Lili Marlene."

This was closely followed by Bill Little on his cornet. Bill's really as good as "Superman" on this. The fruits of his labour were definitely not raspberries.

The final item was a one-act play, " D o c t o r O'Toole," with a cast that included real females, recruited from the office staff. Jack Paterson, as the doctor whose hobby was sleighing, gave a good performance, although Alan Pretty was again in evidence.

pected, while Elsie as a garrulous Irish woman scored t o p marks. Ern Shelton proved that he'd had plenty of rehearsing in lovemaking to Betty, while Bill McDowell as the doctor's assistant kept everybody happy. Jack Paterson proved an able compere throughout, although some of his jokes went over with a hush. The whole production was capably handled by Mr. Howells.

A t the conclusion, the entire company were treated to supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hoadley; where the question of supplies had been adequately treated. It was amazing how quickly the good things disappeared.

THE GLEE CLUB The Dips Glee Club formed by George Lake last year is carrying on in this year of grace, 1945. Mr. Hoadley has granted us an hour of his precious time on Tuesdays at lunch-time, and under his glittering baton we pour forth our hearts in song.

We have commandeered the Senior Library, and our warblings, punctuated by a bite of dinner or, as in the case of a second bass—a juicy lemon, provides a tuneful stimulus to those youthful enthusiasts who search for knowledge in past exam, papers.

The number of these enthusiasts has been gradually dwindling, until we now have the Library to ourselves. Occasionally, an irate instructor bursts in on our practice with a

tale of woe.

He has a class in Room 7, which is just below the Library, and he is very worried because the beauty of our massed voices has so enraptured his class that he has been unable to make any impression on it at all.

This year, we have a greater number of members than last year, and practically every section in the Senior School is represented.

W e also have a First Year pianist who relieves Mr. Hoadley from some of the strain of having to play for us as well as conduct. Our most successful number is " O , who will o'er the downs so free," with Masefield's "Sea Fever" running a close second.

The original club has set a standard which, with the support of our conductor, we will endeavour to maintain.

SENIOR FOOTBALL — " A "

The opening of the season saw us at Swinburne where we were welcomed by Mr. Page and defeated—Swinburne 9.8, Footscray 8.2.

Our next visit was to Melbourne Grammar, where our lads used up their excess energy during the hours they were to wait for the match, nevertheless, we acquitted ourselves nobly and ran out easy winners, Footscray 16.12, M.G.S. 4.6.

The team then visited the metropolis (which the Geelong Principal claims has a population of one and a half million within 50 miles of the Geelong Post Office).

In the morning we visited the Ford Works, and then were treated to an excellent luncheon by Domestic Arts students of the Gordon Institute.

Mr. Porter was voted somewhat of a " w o l f " and given a certificate to t h a t effect. The game in the afternoon proved to be the best of the season and our defeat in the last quarter was due, we believe, to the presence of female barrackers on the fence—Footscray 12.16, Geelong 16.10.

Our morale high, we tackled University High only to have our spirits lowered by the "small" boys they breed out that way, U.H.S. 8.10, Footscray 6.8. W e were to have visited Swinburne on 15th August, but, due to Hirohito throwing in the towel, the game was postponed.

Instead, we saw Mr. Kepert's "Ford Mercury" removed rather boisterously from its decorative position in front of the School to a pedestal at the t o p of the front steps where large numbers of small boys applied numerous decorations to improve its already beautiful appearance and its owner's prestige.

Gordon Institute played a return match and we found that our views on Mr. Porter's capacity were completely substantiated.

In the match in the afternoon Geelong were again victorious, but only by the small margin of ten points.

But for the kicking (or miskicking!) of a certain forward, the tables might easily have been turned — Footscray 4.12, Geelong 6.10.

"B" TEAM The team's first match was against Essendon at Yarraville. A f t e r a rather one-sided game the scores were, Footscray 19.7, Essendon 5.6.

The following week Camberwell High came to Yarraville to receive their dose of Footscray, the scores being Footscray 17.16, Camberwell 6.2.

Gaining confidence from these easy victories, the Seconds went to Northcote High School where, on the bumpy wastes of Merri Park, Northcote held them to a close finish, final scores being Footscray 6.10, Northcote 6.2. A c c e p t i n g a challenge from V.A., the Seconds fielded a scratch team, but, missing several star players, were defeated 11.5 to 6.3.

A f t e r this match, a return match with Camberwell High was played at Gardiner. Though much improved, Camberwell were unable to avenge their earlier defeat, the scores being on this occasion, Footscray 7.9, Camberwell 6 . I I .

Star player for the season was Fraser, our wing man, with Barnacle a close second.

Others noticeable for their consistent play were Nolan, Lane, Malesa, Quincey and Lockhart, of the "mosquito f l e e t " ; and Shipp, May, Fatchen, and Ducrow, of the followers.

Diploma cricket this year proved to be one of the most successful for many years.

In past years it has been a problem to raise one school team, but this year we were able to get enough students interested in this sport to run two school teams. Early in the year we played two practice matches at South Kensington before tackling other schools.

From these matches we were able to pick strong teams for the First and Second Elevens.

The First Eleven played their first match against Swinburne Tech. at the Glenferrie Oval.

Swinburne batted first and were all dismissed for 35 runs, mainly due t o our two bowlers, Austin and Kilby, being on t o p from the start. Austin took a wicket with his first ball and finished with 7 wickets for 8, while Kilby took 2 for 21. Footscray then batted and at the close of play for the first day had lost 9 for 101. On the second day the score was taken to 127.

This good score was mainly due to Bob Ducrow 32, Peter Thomson 19, Dick Sanders 17, and Bill Williams 15, not out.

Swinburne then went in again, this time putting up a much better performance and scoring I 16. Our main bowlers in this innings were Geoff. Fountain, 3 for 22, and Geoff.

Mackay, 2 for 8. In our second innings we had ten minutes in which to make 25 runs for an outright win. Dick Sanders and Allan Kearton opened up and soon g o t into their stride and put up 32 runs in 8 minutes.

Kearton finished the match by hitting a six into the railway line adjoining the ground.

In our first game we played Essendon at home and defeated them by 56 runs in the first innings. Next week Sunshine turned the tables on us and we were defeated by 14 runs.

Collingwood and Brunswick have yet to be played and we hope to win both of these matches.

ANNUAL SPORTS ATHLETIC. Wednesday, August 29, dawned fine and sunny, and as we journeyed to School, we hoped that the fine weather would continue, • and t h a t the right house would win. Soon, everyone concerned was stripped, and equipped, where necessary, with spikes. On emerging from the dressing sheds, we were hit by the Antarctic W i n d on its return journey t o the South Pole; nevertheless, by lunch-time, most of the main events had been run.

SWIMMING. Our annual Swimming Sports were held on, 25th February, and for once the "weather man" smiled kindly on us. The programme commenced with the running of the junior free-style events, some of the younger contestants looking and behaving like miniature Weeroonas. Many smiles were brought to the faces of onlookers by the starting dives of some of the competitors, ranging from headers to perfect "bally-whackers."

A mirth-making performance was given, too, by our comic diving troupe, of whom, however,' no mention was made on the official proqramme. (I have just been informed by Max Flockhart that A L L diving exhibitions were serious—pardon, my mistake!)

W e must applaud, too, the performance of the School out-board motor—John Wills, whose swimming display was well worth watching.

Results were: Monash 140 points, Mitchell 119, Deakin 31.5. and Sturt 67.5.

Once again the thanks and appreciation of the School are due to our sportsmaster, Mr. Halpin, and his associates, who helped to make the sports go off with a swing, and in true clockwork fashion. May I suggest, however, that added interest would be gained by the inclusion of some novelty events such as plunge, duck-dive, underwater swim, and fourth method rescue races.

It was rumoured during luncheon that Dr. Schapper had been asked to f i t up a "magic eye" for Mr. Porter's use next year.

We do not wish to suggest that the lack of one this year was in any way responsible for Deakin House maintaining such an easy lead all day. The final results were: Deakin 498 points, Monash 380^ points, Mitchell 276 points, and Sturt 248^ points. A t the conclusion of the sports, Mr. Hoadley presented the pennant to the captain of Deakin House.

Our thanks are due to the Mothers' Club for their fine efforts in providing a tasty and enjoyable lunch a t a nominal charge; and also to Mr. Halpin and his colleagues for the time and energy expended in helping to make the sports the success that they proved to be.

Our next match was against Swinburne, whom we defeated 3 to I. Two matches, two wins —so far so good.

Then we met our own Junior School on a greasy ground and they defeated us 3 to 2. (Excuses referred t o Junior School team for comment.—Ed.) W e decided to play Swinburne again and again we defeated them, this time by 3 to 0.

W e then averaged our previous defeat by trouncing the Junior School 5 to I. This concluded our games for the season during which, we are pleased to say, we made many friends.

As a senior team did not exist in the Diploma School, some of the boys interested in tennis decided to form the present team, which consists of six players. But, although small, we gave a good account of ourselves and spent a very happy time this year. W e defeated Swinburne Technical School twice, and University High School once; but lost t o Melbourne High School once, and twice t o Gordon Institute. A great day was spent by the players when we visited Geelong.

W e inspected the Ford Works, had dinner at the School, cooked and served by some of the girls—I am afraid that some of the boys' attention wandered during dinner—and then played tennis in the afternoon.

However, whether it was the dinner or not, we were defeated.

We entertained the Geelong players when they visited us, but once again we were defeated. The last match was played against the staff. It was an exciting game, but the staff, pipped us on the post by nine games. However, we hope to play the staff team again before the year is finished, and t o defeat them.

Now that a senior team has been formed, we hope that in the years to come the team will increase its members and its standard.

SPORTS TRIP TO G E E L O N G .

On Wednesday, 18th July, the football and tennis teams boarded the 8.22 train to Geelong.

W e were invited down for the day by the Gordon Institute, firstly to have dinner at the school, and then to play their football and tennis teams in the afternoon.

W e planned to spend the morning visiting the Ford M o t o r Works, as we had done the previous year.

A bus took us out to the works and, after a preliminary address by one of the managers, we set off t o probe some of the mysteries that lie behind the V-8.

The factory is a huge building, housing machinery that fair leaves you gasping.

We saw them mass-producing tanks, "Jelly Bombs," and Belly Tanks; here, girl welders handled the torch like old hands.

Another section shows the construction and preliminary running-in of the V-8.

For further information, see J.L.K.-—he owns one. There was much to see, but time was against us, so we departed for the G o r d o n Institute, filled with much food for thought.

Everybody was curious about the dinner we were to receive, and there was much speculation on the subject.

However, you can imagine our surprise when we were ushered into a pleasant little dining-room where stood about ten pretty girls just waiting to serve up the goods. The mystery was explained at once, for Geelong is fortunate in having a Domestic Economy School, and the students had turned out their best threecourse meal to appease the appetites of the visitors.

Just to prove we weren't being experimented upon, their principal dined with us. Later, having finished dinner, Mr. Porter responded on our behalf and praised the Domestic Economy School, the young ladies, and the three-course meal, while we just praised the young ladies. However, the sad moment came and we departed, bidding silent farewell to the students of the D.E.S., earnestly hoping that co-education would some day come to F.T.S. The weather was glorious for sport, and we lost no time settling down to business, the football team playing at Kardinia Park, and the tennis team at the courts by the river.

Being one of the tennis team, I can say we found solid opponents.

There were some interesting sets, and the final result was 10-8 sets, a victory for Geelong.

A certain great river in our midst refuses to allow the firing of projectiles from ingenious catapults whilst he is lecturing. It would appear that the staccato reports and nervewracking whines, occasioned by the projectiles as they ricochet from wall to wall, are disturbing to the mathematical mind. I see no reason for - such a reaction except that of Newton's " t o every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."

One master, who sounds rather fishy, but is used to shocks and sparks, appears to be allergic to nothing, for his only reaction to the pranks has been to christen a particularly well-behaved section of the class "The Unholy Trinity," with emphasis on the "un."

TRIALS O F Vlb. A m o n g Melbourne's industrial suburbia is one, Footscray, which is world-famous for its aromatic atmosphere.

Now Footscray possesses an institution almost as famous as its atmosphere, and the inmates of this institution, after passing through the "Door of O p p o r t u n i t y " in search of power, for "Knowledge is Power," are instructed in the manly art of engineering.

Almost last on the rolls, but by no means least, is a class designated as Vlb (the " b " representing "barbarous"), which has achieved its fame not from the scholastic achievements of its 22 hard-swotting, reserved students, but rather from a slight flippancy prevalent throughout the class. This manifests itself in the numbers of practical jokes played during class periods.

These jokes are usually played on the master, who invariably objects.

A man as brave as Daniel who faced the lions in the den is seldom discomfited even ' b y Vlb, but he, too, occasionally, loses his equanimity enough to issue grave warnings.

However, the self-control of the institution's master draughtsman is sorely tried. W h y he is angered when he goes to his recently replenished chalk store and finds it empty is only vaguely understandable. It would appear to the student that the search for the chalk would be entertaining—rather like looking for a hidden treasure, what?

Although hectored and bullied from all quarters, the jubilant spirits of Vlb. rise higher as each day their notoriety becomes greater.

The pilot of a certain terrifying monster, which breathes fire and smoke as it chugs round the corner bright and early each morning, has been known to become quite irate just because some mysterious force has transformed the electric lights into luminous pendulums which oscillate gently in different directions.

A well-known linguist appears to be somewhat averse to the presence of smoke and stink bombs in the room, at any rate his howling often descends to high heaven.

On Tuesday nights from seven o'clock onwards, there is a steady stream of people wending their way upstairs to the Library.

Once there, the early-comers give one the impression of furniture removers—the chairs being the main removables. Padded and sprung chairs are like girls, in the minority at English, and so firstcomers are the most comfortably "seated."

During the year, " M a c b e t h , " " M a y o r of Casterbridge," and "Paradise Lost" have been extensively studied; and much essay, logic, and precis work has been done.

To many, this may sound rather hard going, but our darkness has been lightened in many ways.

A t the beginning of the year, when essay topics were discussed, we had many good, impromptu debates. Some of the boys have brilliant ideas which they express in no uncertain manner, and often very amusingly. In addition, we have had some very enjoyable evenings with Mr. Knight, who is well known +o the day boys. (I hope the other gentlemen who call up and see us sometimes will not think we do not appreciate their visits, for we do.)

Mr. Knight, being an Englishman, was able to give us firsthand impressions of the customs and habits of Casterbridge folk, and to tell us of the places mentioned in both the play and the novel.

W e all hope that he will be back t o see us before the end of the year..

I will finish with a word of advice to those who intend studying this subject next year.

It is not worth while coming unless you have regularly attended Sunday School, for, otherwise, when examinations come round, "Paradise" will not be the only thing lost.

By the time this is published, I will probably be able to confirm this.

IVa. Composed entirely of notables, our form may boast of numerous salient personalities.

O f our number, genius rating probably belongs only to Haines; but Wookey and Cahill do not fall far short.

McDowell figures prominently in our Hall of Fame as displaying brilliant histrionic talent, adequate evidence of this being furnished by his facetious performance in "Sinbad the Sailor."

The disquieting imminence of Final Examinations is now pressing most of our already overtaxed mentalities into further vehement endeavours in order that the traditions of this famous form may be sustained. Some, however, despondently face the realization t h a t former opinions of their own competence were foundationless, and that participation in the distasteful occupation of wage-earning is inevitable.

— F . V. SPRAWSON. Va. This year, which will be remembered for its outstanding historical events, has been also memorable to us for the following reasons.

Possibly because the First Term examinations coincided with the end of the war in Europe, two-thirds of our class failed in Maths.

End of term brought with it the Open Night which, in our opinion, was very good, making us proud of the School and happy to be students of it.

During Second Term we resolved ourselves into a football team and suffered only one defeat, beating even the second eighteen.

The holding of the mid-year examinations four weeks ahead of schedule gave us an excellent excuse for our low marks.

W e will all remember V-P Day, and associate it in our minds with the sight of J.K.'s car sitting serenely on the front door-step.

A f t e r V-E and V-P days came V-R D a y much to the disgust of Mr. Murray. I wonder if we will ever finish our Maths, course?

"But Patrick hates his English, sir!" cried all the boys that knew him; 'Twas true. So very wrathfully his English teacher slew him!

O f course, he went at once to Heaven, that Land of Wondrous Joy. Saint1 Peter at the Golden G a t e cried out, " A l l Heaven, ahoy!

"Here's Comrade Pat Dunlevie, and of course we'll let him in. " A n d we'll let him play a saxophone among the Cherubim."

But very, very quickly, Satan came upon the scene, A n d took a look at Patrick, and the look was very keen!

A n d Satan said, " H e LOOKS as though he ought to come to me, " A n d burn with Mussolini in the furnace Number Three.

"But perhaps it's only fair to have a regular debate, "So bring along your witnesses—we'll soon decide his fate."

A n d first among, the witnesses was called a lady fair.

'Twas Patrick's first school-teacher, who did solemnly declare: " H e was just a little loafer, and he never tried to learn; " H e merely sat and idled for the whole of every term.

"The only prize he ever won in competition hard " W a s a Spitting Competition that they held out in the yard."

Then they summoned forth the flappers, and they came from every side.

(In his dealings with the flappers, Patrick takes a special pride.)

It really seemed as if he'd had a new girl every night.

Thus Stalin came. He winked at Pat, then cried, " G o o d spirits, see! " H e mustn't burn with Musso or you'll have to deal with ME! " D o n ' t bother threatening thunder-bolts nor any ancient pranks. " W h a t good would be your thunder-bolts against Red A r m y tanks?'

Seventh Year Who's Who In the year of grace nineteen hundred and forty-five, history was in the making at Ye O l d e Footscray Tech. W i t h the blessings of C . A . H . , and the blasphemies of J.L.K., the original 7th Year was formed, composed of such souls and heels as lab. boys, loafers, repeaters, and those few of the slightly dead who are just filling in time.

A f t e r being ejected from the Prefects' Room by the newly-elected prefects, Form 7 made their seventh heaven in Room I, where we resumed our poker and two-up activities.

Many a pipe-full has been smoked in Room I while waiting for the billy to boil for the tea.

A t assembly, the 7th Year is conspicuous by its absence. W e are never really absent, but seated comfortably in the amplifier room beneath the staircase. W e are a little tired of hearing the same old record being played for the march-in, so do not be surprised if one morning you find yourself marching to the rhythm of " M a r c h of the Bob-Cats" or " W e l l G e t It." It is not generally known that we have a "wharfie" in our midst—none other than Brodie Mack, whose motto is, " W h y work when you're smart?"

During the recent vacation, he was not smart enough to escape the need for money and, with the drying up of his usual sources of revenue, such as toymaking, poker and billiards, he betook him-

self to the wharves to load sugar.

It has yet to be verified whether he really did load 500 bags an hour. Brodie Mack would like to know when a certain member of the staff is going to make a t r i p to the A n t a r c t i c by air, and be up the pole with a vengeance.

One day, Brodie is going to condescend upon the class and give that teacher a piece of his mind. It's quite possible, now that they've found how to split the atom.

A favourite hide-out earlier in the year was the A r t store room. Ostensibly doing Design, the inmates in reality would be listening t o a " j a m " session on a borrowed wireless, or using the telephone to make a date with some whistle bait. However, one dark Friday, the wireless was discovered by Butch, whereupon some loud Howells were raised and the wireless confiscated.

The Heat Engines Lab. boy is " W h e a t b a g " Willie Hefferen.

Johnnie is always having trouble with either W i l l or the furnace—every time he watches one, the other goes out.

They are always exchanging unpleasantries, particularly when Bill is caught black-handed.

The A p p l . Mech. lab. boy is "Roscoe" Cook, whose favourite pastime is measuring the tensile strength of orange peel and " A c e " chewing gum. Some of his yarns put your eyebrows on stilts.

He tells us t h a t the duplicator won't duplicate unless the operator is holding hands with a pretty girl.

The man with the long neck is " G i r a f f e , " commonly hailed as " O x , " and famed for his ability to stick like glue t o the man who explains everything on excursions. W e have scooter manufacturer in " A b d u l A r b e y , " who is also the proud owner of an "iron Horse."

It is rumoured that although his girl friend is a stonemason's daughter, she never takes anything for granite. Although Max Flockhart is the baby of the class, he once tried to grow a moustache—on the instalment system, a little down each week. Max is a self-made man, a horrible example of unskilled labour. The trouble with self-made men is that they appear to have stopped work too soon.

Our Welding ace is Geordie " W e b f o o t " Webster, who can light a cigarette with a welding torch and only burn a thou, off his half-a-mo.

He is wondering whether the other half will ever grow again. The small boy of the class is "Banger" Banks—barely 6' 3" in his socks.

"Banger" is the kind of man who early in life begins to look like a family portrait.

out of water, but have you seen him in the water? Easily the champion swimmer in the School, he can trace his ancestry to seals or porpoises or something.

Our platinum blonde, " W o m b a t , " grubs around doing nothing so nicely that i t becomes something.

"Sheepshead" and the teachers have buried the hatchet in a shallow well-marked grave. "Squirt" denies that Diamond Creek is the land of the living dead; none the less, he is so weary that he has no more go in him than an unwound clock. Len Irwin and Jock Hall have many points of similarity— they are both blonde, footballers, prefects, and girl scouts. Len has a chin-up girl of his own. A f t e r all, he's not much to look at, but you should see his clothing coupons.

Jock believes in platonic but brief friendships.

None of this "till death do us p a r t " business.

O f course, women live longer than men, anyway; paint's a great preservative.

Our country lads are "Pineapple" John Wills, who hails from Queensland; " W o m b a t " Charlie Willcox, from W a n g a r a t t a ; Jack "Sheepshead" Rodolo, our classical music fiend, whose sole ambition is to earn enough money for a motor car, and Ernie, from Diamond Creek. In class, John is like a fish

Alan "Spudder" Tait is famed for his courage in asking "the boss" to postpone the surveying examination so that he could go t o a party—and he very nearly succeeded. Alan was once rocked to sleep by a certain girl friend.

You should have seen the rock.

Nevertheless, they're still friends—they hav the same enemies. "Ex" marks his spot on her heart.

Last, and certainly least, is "Pipsqueak" Perring—the lad with so much water on the brain that he parts his hair with a sponge.

The 7th Year looks with horror upon the thought of leaving "our 'appy ome," and we only wish that there could be an 8th Year in which to take refuge from the C . H . W .

He is " b e a r i n g " up well to the efforts of some "nuts" trying to draw "bolts," and feels sure that he could "drill" some sense into their heads by using a few persuasive "taps" with a tee square.

Does not believe that men should be modelled in straight lines. Declares that due to staff shortages, service and servility to students cannot be maintained at pre-war standard.

Teaches that elusive foreign language, English.

He is editor and censor of our Mag., so "what opes?"

His ability to be logical and solve " silly - gisms veritably astounds the students under his care. Being an old Rugby player, this probably accounts for the way he can "tackle" precis writing.

Is never excited except when concerts approach, and then, as Director, his panic begins. Has been here for a considerable time, and has always worn that same benign look. A great admirer of Wordsworth and Shakespeare, he can quote " M a c b e t h " faultlessly and endlessly.

When deep in thought, he has a habit of stroking his bald pate as a substitute for tearing his non-existent hair. In his spare time he composes couplets to deflate our self-opinionations:

This purveyor of platitudes is the only man in the School who can give any reason as to why antiques are lathes, and what makes a gear grind its teeth. Considers the hammer is a curse to all mankind except the Diploma student who uses it quite skilfully.

He refuses to give any information regarding the source of his weak jokes, but there is a hint that they were oefore Noah's time, because there were only two of everything at the Ark. The fact that he teaches Theory counteracts the absence of a boring machine, proving that men are as good as machines.

Firmly believes that it would be easier for a tail to wag his dog rather than a dog to wag his tail. Originator of the story of the dog who chased his tail to make both ends meet. On vacation, disguises himself as a fisherman wrapped in old clothes.

His classes are really concentration camps on our side.

FORM NOTES The original Ic. early in the year contained some wags. In class, however, we were all well behaved, although M r . Torode, the Sheetmetal teacher, rarely realized this. W e had the best football team in all the First Year sections. Ray Saltmarsh, our rover, was the outstanding player.

W e think that our section is easily the best in the School. Thanks t o Keith Butler, our W a r Relief effort is topping the whole School.

Our football team was not very successful a t the commencement of this season, but after we re-organized ourselves in Second Term, we showed great improvement.

In the First' Term, our cricket team won the competition, and we have also done very well in Third Term.

O u r scholastic ability is widely known, but Bill Roberts, dux in the first half-year, is going t o meet a great deal o f opposition in the second examination.

Id. Our W a r Relief effort was not very good at the commencement of the year, but improved in the Second Term. The boys in our section like all t h e teachers, especially our formmaster, Mr. Anderson, and Mr. Halpin, who is sports master. Sturt has not proved t o be a very powerful house during the year, but we hold out great hopes for the future. W e think we have one of the best form captains in Ray Saltmarsh, and our best sporting representatives were Ewart, Crawley, Bright and Saltmarsh.

All the boys in our section are very good scholars (or are supposed t o be). W e like all the teachers and enjoy especially W o o d work, Social Studies and Algebra. Our football team was quite successful; our most prominent players were Bill Cleary, John MacTaggart and Barrie Klemm. Our house, Monash, won the Swimming Sports, and performed very creditably in the Athletic Sports, when our chief competitors were Oliver, Klemm, Hurwood and Cleary.

Mr. Taylor, our Arithmetic teacher, has introduced an Honour Book, and there is great competition each week t o see whose homework will be entered in the Honour Book.

W e have our share of the interesting characters of the School, such as " M o g g y " Gunn and " A c k y " W h i t e .

Ron Hopper is our movie critic; Bob Grescke is our mechanical scientist, whilst in the sporting sphere we have many representatives. Les Vines is one of the stars of the school football team, whilst other fine exponents of the game are Mcintosh, Simms and Saltau.

Baseball is represented by Taylor, Kelly and W h i t e . Our form captain is W e a r y Taylor, who is supported by M. Beckett, the mathematician. L. Hogan has raised a large amount of money for patriotic funds, and Mr. Marshall is our popular form master.

In our section, we have some rema rkable characters. Alan Farrar, the great scholar, has produced many interesting designs in Modelling. Our -fossilized Alan Adler is no relation to his namesake, Larry. W e have two Robinsons—John, who has a flair for baseball, and Adrian, who is of the "Jack of all trades, master of none" type. Rex Smith, Don Thompson and Neil Frigerio are the babies of the section, whilst David Alexander is the possessor of a grin of the Tom Sawyer type.

W e had an excellent football team, led by Frank Connell.

Our team was unbeatable in the air, but at times the ball showed great reluctance to remain aloft.

Our team had many fine players, whom the "scouts" of other sections would have liked to sign up. W e collected a considerable sum of money for the W a r Relief Fund.

The collector, Frank Connell, is to be a salesman after he leaves school.

G . Mackie and "Pando" Hirriart are never without an excuse for being late—they hail from Werribee, where "Pando" conducts a miniature menagerie. " D r e a r y " McDonald and "Undertaker" Adams are noted for the speed at which they don't move; whilst, on the football field, Williams and Adams provide M r . Torode with numerous patients.

Our captain is C. McCarthy, who, however, suffers from his association with C. Pearce, about whom the less said the better.

Our best footballer and cricketer is C. McCarthy, whilst H. Douglas and C. Bradley represent the school in hockey.

W e have shown keen interest in the school garden during the year, our Wednesday workers being T. Bradley, E. Wilson and R. Weybury.

W e have had a successful year in English, and are very fond of Mr. Carey, who always has a joke for the boys. All of us are keen on sport, and have had a considerable amount of success during the year.

II Ma. As this has been our first year at the School, many of the subjects were strange to us at first, but the mid-year exams showed that we had gained a firm grip on our work.

Lacrosse has been started by our form, and has proved most enjoyable, in spite of a few casualties. One of our students, A. Allen, won ^ three-mile championship during the year, whilst Albert Foreman gained fame through his hobby of collecting newspaper headlines.

II Mb. The beginning of the year 1945 brought ten newcomers to II Mb. They were a little lost at first, but soon seftled down to work.

The most oustanding workers throughout the year were C. Sargent, D. Conroy and B. Spedding.

Our best footballer was S. Hollingsworth, who ended his season by dislocating his collar-bone. The dux of the class was C. Sargent.

Under our able sectionmaster, Mr. Torode, we are kept in good order. Four members of our class are in the Gardening Club, working every Wednesday afternoon. Our class captain is S. Blainey, who did a good job throughout the year.

The Footscray Technical School Garden in ! Ballarat Road was originally designed by a professional gardener.

A f t e r the site had been cleared of rocks, which were saved to form borders, the grading of the surface into gentle slopes and terraces was commenced.

Broad paths were formed and stone borders constructed around the beds, which were covered with garden loam six inches deep.

Then water pipes were laid in convenient positions and the garden handed over to the students of the School.

Under the supervision of Mr. Torode, the Footscray Technical School Gardening Club, which meets twice weekly, was inaugurated and proceeded to plant and to care for the garden. To protect flowers and lawns during severe weather, hedges and shrubs were planted in suitable positions.

A selection of choice seedlings was planted, ensuring a variety of blooms throughout the year.

A feature of which the Club is particularly proud is the collection of shrubs, which include rare types, such as Retinospora Obtusa Crippii, and Juniperus Virginiana.

Valuable advice and gifts of choice seedlings have been received from the Curator and staff of the Footscray Gardens, to whom we all feel very grateful.

On the 6th December, 1944, a Japanese force made a surprise attack upon the F.T.S., Ballarat Road. The telephone wires having been cut, the defence of the School depended on the staff and students.

Our first warning of the enemy's approach was a blast on the siren. This was followed by a rush of defensive operations.

From the incinerator, fed with waste paper by First Year Sections, rose a smoke-screen which soon enveloped the vicinity.

Down Ballarat Road charged the F.T.S Storm Troopers, mounted on scooters, cyclops and wooden horses, Mr. Ritter leading the way, throwing pyramids.

In the Sheetmetal Shop, flame throwers, skilfully manipulated by the Repeats, kept the attackers at bay, while Mr. Torode dressed the wounded with his first-aid outfit.

A t the main entrance, M r . Carey stood on one side of the door and Mr. Halpin on the other.

Japs on the head with his trusty baseball bat, Mr. Carey piled them up in Room 5, where Mr. Tindale had charge of the disintegrator.

Suddenly, the Japs found themselves subjected to heavy artillery fire from the guns of F.T.S.S. "Youka," a ten-ton battle cruiser of the F.T.S. fleet, which was steaming down the Maribyrnong.

This completed the rout of the Japs, who retired, leaving scores of their, dead and dying on the field.

Mr. Dadsey has since been presented with a leather medal for his outstanding bravery in preserving the Time-table intact in its showcase, while under heavy enemy fire.

Johnstone, who seems to get bigger, brighter and better than ever with the passing of the years. Chas. joined the School on opening day in 1916, and entertained the assembly with some anecdotes of the occasion.

As director of a large business organization, he was able to give some good advice to the younger generation on pitfalls of the commercial world.

In responding to the toast, Mr. Hoadley told members of the proposed future development of the School, and expressed the hope that in the plans for the ri«w school, space would be found for an Assembly Hall.

THE YEAR'S ACTIVITIES. The O l d Diploma Students' Association has had a most successful year, more functions than ever before having been held.

The success of these functions is largely due to the untiring^ efforts of the social sub-committee appointed by the general committee. Under the capable guidance of Stuart Patullo, seven dances were he Id at the Scout Hall. These proved good get-together functions, even a number of non-dancers turning up to chat with their cronies of the good old days at the "best school of all."

Sometimes, the orchestra was slow, or the floor fast, but this didn't seem to deter the ^,ithusiasm of the jitter-bugs, doodle-bugs and humbugs. There always seemed to be a shortage of girls, so that "wallflowers" were almost unknown. Even staid and sedate members of the teaching staff unbern enough to tread the Alberts with a stately and dignified measure.

The Annual Meeting was held at the School on September 23. In his report, the retiring President, Alex. Thomson, revealed that the financial membership had increased to 92, and the Assemblv Hall Fund had now reached £56. The election of office-bearers brought three new members to the Committee, Ron Newman, Jack Pitt and A l f Bradshaw, replacing Max Williams, Norm Deane and Bill Maher. The new President, Noel Blick, was then installed, and the meeting adjourned to Room NO for supper and entertainment.

Amongst the harmonists, Stan Willcox and Bob Whitaker performed admirably, while the Glee Club showed that they had lost little of their entertainment value, even though the members were now scattered far and wide.

Mr. Syd. Stewart gave some humorous recitations and ventriloquial acts, while one of our own members, Frank Rumpf, tickled the ivories in no uncertain manner. Our old friend, Roy Day, showed that he's lost none of his form in light entertainment by his version of " The Nancy Lee." The toast of the School, proposed by Karel Lohning, was enthusiastically received, and feelingly responded to by the Principal.

Lectures held during the year included three by our own members—"Tropicalization of W a r Equipment," by Jock M c G r a t h ; "Production Methods in Small Arms Manufacture," by Alex Thomson, and " M o d e r n Steam Power Station Operation," by Stuart Patullo.

The lecturers used film strips to add to the general interest, and demonstrated some of the apparatus and products to clarify various points.

In the near future, two more such items are scheduled. These are "The Manufacture of Synthetic Rubber," by Ron Newman, and " C a t h o d e Ray Oscillographs," by Harold Westgarth.

Two other interesting lectures were " N a t u r e Study," by Mr. Crosbie Morrison, and " W a r t i m e Uses of Industrial Gases," by Fit.-Lieut. George Ellis A smoke night held at the school on March 24 proved a great success. A b o u t 60 members attended and were regaled sumptuously with drinks, eats and smokes, a good time being had by all. O f the musical items the most popular were by Mr. Harcourt French.

. . FRESHER VIEWS . .

Having, after much form-filling and delay, attained the exalted rank of pen-pushing fresher at the local "Shop," I am inclined to agree with the older generation who claim that school days constitute the easiest part of one's life. The obvious moral is—become a school teacher. By the way, the definition of a school does not include the University.

In the former a teacher teaches, but in the latter, a lecturer lectures.

On arriving at the above-mentioned seat of learning, w e — seven of us this year—were overjoyed to find the place swarming with O l d Boys. However, our hopes that it would prove to be a home away from home were short-lived, dying, in fact, with the first lecture.

Prospects assumed a rosier appearance when Union House loomed before us, but as true students, we scorned the temptations of the billiards room—mainly because it was always packed out, anyhow—in favour of the easy chairs of the lounge.

By the end of second term, we could no longer overcome the urge to work, an inclination mainly originating in a vision of annual examinations. An organized search for a library yielded startling results, there being, in fact, no less than four available to engineering students. The first was one containing novels and other light reading, situated in Union House, a locality not designed t o

Public Library, was a two-penny tram fare distant, but the baffling mysteries of its newly installed revolving door kept us at bay.

Of the General and Engineering Libraries at the University, the seats in the latter being more comfortable, it was consequently chosen as the appropriate place for an afternoon's nap.

A new complication now arose, however.

As Tech. School students, many of us had not patronised a library before, and were thus unable to obtain full value from this one.

Let me, therefore, make the suggestion that an attempt be made to raise the status of the School Library from that of spare classroom to its true position, and don't think I am just crawling to the Editor. If I might be allowed to proffer another suggestion, why not form an Engineering or Science Club, the members of which could take turns in giving lunch-hour talks on topics of interest? There are literally dozens of such organizations up here, varying in form from Jazz Club to Interplanetary Society.

O f course, hardworking students don't have much time to go to these meetings; that is probably why they are so well-attended in general—which reminds me that it's time I dashed off to the inaugural meeting of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to O v e r - W o r k e d Students.

A Christmas at From "a tropical lagoon somewhere in S.W.P.A.," Tom Kilburn sends this account of Christmas Day celebrations aboard H.M.A.S. Deloraine: "Christmas Eve saw the lads of 'Deloraine' preparing for the festivity. A whaler's crew was despatchd to a nearby island to collect fresh fruit and the necessary flora for decorations. The isle is like those you read about â&#x20AC;&#x201D; t h e kind Dottie. Lamour loves t o drape herself around, complete with broad, white beach, gently swaying palm trees, and a tribe of aborigines.

Unfortunately, the setting lacked Miss Lamour, and the native substitute is hardly adequate, for in figure they are worse than Z class orangoutangs.

Nevertheless, they do resemble their fairer sisters in the amount and distribution of their wearing apparel."

NATURE STUDY On Wednesday, August 2, Mr. Crosbie Morrison, Editor of " W i l d Life," gave an illustrated lecture to the O l d Boys in Room 10.

The films shown were in natural colour, Mr. Morrison providing a running commentary.

The first film was in three sections, the first of which showed the remarkable colour schemes of various tropical birds and flowers.

The second section dealt with Gippsland's giant earthworms, some of which exceed six feet in length. The final section of the film dealt with owls, the main feature emphasized being the rounded tips on their wings which enable them to fly silently.

The second film, taken while Mr. Morrison was on an A r m y lecturing tour, dealt mainly with the overland road linking Alice Springs and Darwin. This film showed the various interesting rock formations, most rema rkable being the Churchill's Head Rock and the Devil's Marbles. The former rock is strangely like the head of Winston Churchill, a tree trunk jammed into a crevice acting as his cigar. Also on the same film were shown the A r m y farms which help t o supplement A r m y rations with fresh vegetables.

Other items were photos of the swamps of Cape York and of the natives who inhabit that area.

In moving a vote of thanks to Mr. Morrison, J.L.K. produced a corny crack about the habits of bats in winter time. W e ' v e always believed that a wisecrack was simply an emergency exit for a mouse, and this horrible example of pedagogic humour sent us staggering to supper in the staff room.

Tom goes on to explain how, in the Navy, on Christmas Day, officers and ralings change places, the youngest Ordinary Seaman donning the Captain's rig, and so on. " A t 0600 hours, the officers awakened to the tune of 'Wakey Wakey' on the bosun's pipe.

All dressed as seamen and turned to before breakfast to scrub down decks. No 'Rocky' tar ever showed greater proficiency in the art of 'bludging' than did my brothers of the wardroom that morning. A f t e r breakfast, we were required to attend 'Captain's Requestmen and Defaulters.'

I was charged with being too lazy to use both hands for saluting, and on querying the authenticity of such drill, was informed that 'Ignorance of the law is no excuse.' Another officer was sentenced to climb to the masthead and relieve 'the crow' in his 'nest.' On reaching that lofty perch and making due inspection, he called down, 'Sorry, too lateâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the bird has flown and relieved itself.''

Needless to say, this secured for the witty one an immediate pardon."

Tom concludes his account of the day's merry-making by describing how, late that night, the whole ship's company charged their glasses with lolly-water and drank, "To all our absent friends and those unhappy people who celebrate the day in a rationed htomeland.

To which worthy sentiment, we would gratefully reply, " A n d G o d bless you."

W i t h the passing of another year, we are forced to admit that Anno Domini has us in his grip, and that the Old Boys are really getting adiectively old. A n d what a year of days—Father's day, mother's day, victory dry, liberty day, egg day, and even baby's zero birthday have thrilled us in a manner commensurate with their importance. In fact, we're glad, in this most memorable year of our existence, to hitch up our pants by tying another knot in the old school tie and face up to the old school sock, "Your attention is directed to the Assembly Hall Fund, etc."

By careful perusal of the police records and diligent search of the lost and found columns of the daily papers, we have traced the Legion of the Lost—the 1944 graduation class. You remember that perfect class. Just a skeleton of a class except, perhaps, that a skeleton hasn't the guts, fo keep the gold, royal and na/y blue flag flying at the University, Jack Barker, Norm Deane, Allen Fulton, Max Carless, Max Williams and David G a f f were regimented as privates in the ranks of the undergraduates.

Jack almost immediately rose from his privacy to a captaincy.

Though still a private in the ranks, Norm will soon be a corpuscle.. He somewhat disconcerts the lecturers by gazing at them with rapt admiration and hero worship in his eyes.

The gowns have got him in. That old bookworm, Allen, now wanders round the sacred cloisters, Hemmi in hand, muttering occasionally to.himself but withal, happy. Before marriage, my wife used to call me a bookworm; now she omits all reference to books. a

frightened rabbits to the Uni. when scholarships came their way. Now they think that work was not so bad after all. O f course, we won all the Government scholarships to the University this year.

Is it any wonder that the old school tie tends to strangle us as we swell with pride? G a f f y had a bit of difficulty getting in because of his age group or blood group, or something, but eventually convinced the Faculty that he was a f i t and proper person to drink a morning cuppa in the cafeteria.

These lads were soon initiated into the mysteries of lecture-dodging, lab.-shirking, and drawing office desertion by those shameless, carefree inmates, Ron Beck, Harry Hyamson, Charlie Halik, Don Schintler, Arnold Deans, Alan Varey, Karel Lohnging, G r e g .

M o t t , Jack Keegan and Stan Horney. Those of our brood who successfully incubated degrees in engineering science are Ron McPhee, Noel Blick, Harry Stephenson, M a t t Harrison and Bob Boynton. As a thanksgiving for his graduation, Bob joined the Navy as a Petting Officer or Flighty-Lieutenant—I forget which.

He was recently portrayed in " W o m a n ' s Weekly," fraternizing with a very pretty girl.

Shape A h o y ! Anyway, Bob has been in-action in the Pacific, and declares in a recent letter, "Praise the Lord, the ammunition passed me."

A large number of the 1945 graduation class couldn't take a hint and stooged around for some more ear-bashing.

From their air of somnambulism, we would say they prefer spine-bashing.

These men now constitute Form VII, and are duly biographically boosted elsewhere.

Amongst those earnest lads who took the knock and went to work, we find Bill De Campo counting kilowatts at S.E.C. (Fred.

Philip blowing fuses in the Yarraville lab.), and Bob Beel down at Richmond Power Station feeding amps into generators.

A t S.E.C. power house, where the cream of our mechanical men go, we find G e o r g e Lake, of Glee Club fame, tuning the generators to give them a more musical hum. W e think the superintendent must be musical or something as amongst those present when the clock is punched are "Tich" Davies and Stuart Grant, boy soprano and base basso respectively.

It occasionally stalls, owing to the fact that though the spirit is willing, the flash is weak.

Another prominent member of the Glee Club adorning S.E.C. is Jack Orr, who went to Yallourn to cook briquettes. There's a true musician for you.

A t his boarding house, when he hears a lady singing in the bath, he puts his ear to the keyhole. Jack was in love for a while, but she turned him down like a bedspread. Such a pity. She had a way of walking in his sleep. Jack's laugh is now rusty and unpractised. That Compleat Wangler, Rex Loose, got himself a job in a marine yard where they buy and sell ships on the Lend-Fleece system. Any rate, he fixes ships â&#x20AC;&#x201D;same day service. Jack Pitt and Ian Cook are making X-ray gear.

W e always knew they'd need help to see through things. Jack still pushes his motor bike around, usually with a very attractive pillion passenger.

What's it matter if the bike does lose its snaffle valves?

Jack has spent so much on the girl he'll have to marry her for his money.

Ian McGillivray, who went to the war to see what we're paying for, is still rusticating at Bandianna. He hopes to be a paratrooper.

He wants to climb down trees he never climbed up. Ian Surplice is still kicking his heels in the A r m y .

He is now versed in the A r m y rules: " I f it moves, salute it.

If it doesn't move, pick it up. If it's too big to move, paint it."

Bert Barker and Ron Skewes are officers and gentlemen up North.

Bert is now married and lives happily ever after. They sometimes have words, but Bert doesn't g e t a chance to use his. Try praising your wife, Bert, even if it does frighten her at first.

Sandy MacGavin has now returned from active service, and is a paragraph trooper in the Chairborne Command.

Well, I must close. There are lots and lots of other distinguished O l d Boys, of whom we are justly proud. To them, we can only say, " C o m e up and see us some time."

Our old friend, Tom Kilburn, is still a shesick sailor in the Pacific. Tom used to like the nice, clean ships in the Navy. Now he knows who keeps them that way. Asked what he was before he joined up, Tom replied: "Perfectly contented."

The 1944 Graduation Class was in the agonizing throes of the final examinations when each member was presented with a large sheet of paper bearing on it an invitation to the " A t Home," to be given by Mr. and Mrs. Hoadley. Though at the time the great day seemed very remote, it eventually arrived; and, in doing so, announced the fact that it was time to forget studies, more or less, and launch out into the C . H . W .

As each one arrived, he was pinned to a jumble of letters which, he was assured, gave the name of a flower or vegetable when rearranged.

The idea was to work out as many as possible. Mr. Palmer, with his intimate knowledge of the mesembryanthemum and the ornithogalum, proved that his education extended far into the realms of horticulture. A f t e r all, what chance had we poor students? W e had exhausted our minds of all rational thoughts on the previous evening at the Heat Engines exam. The next item was more in our line.

It consisted of a treasure hunt throughout the house, only the pantry and kitchen being out of boundsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; for obvious reasons. Excitement reigned high and the sundry traffic jams and collisions merely added to the fun. The interval before supper was filled with items given by M r .

Hoadley and the remnants of the Dips Glee Club. J.L.K. rather astounded us by reciting Shakespeare in a most vivacious manner. This rendition suggested to us that he might once have been an English teacher. However, as he emphatically denied the allegation, we will not hold it against him.

Supper was served in keeping with the size and appetites of the company, and was greatly appreciated by all. Max Flockhart, as baby of the class, cut the graduation cake.

As a token to remember us by, Mr. Hoadley was presented with a book,' "The Story of Modern A r t , " on the flyleaf of which were signed the names of the members of the class. A bouquet of roses presented to Mrs. Hoadley carried with it the expression of our thanks for a most enjoyable evening.

By the time of our departure, we all felt that, wherever we went and whatever our future, the graduation night at "The Oddynes" would be, as Rupert Brooke once said of something entirely different, "Unforgettable, unforgotten." â&#x20AC;&#x201D;E. J. BARKER. W A R - T I M E USES O F INDUSTRIAL GASES On Wednesday evening, September 19, we again welcomed Fl.-Lt. G . Ellis to the lecture platform of the O l d Boys' Association.

A large audience of O l d Boys and a scattering of "Dips" comprised an eager audience. A f t e r Mr. Ellis' lecture on Liquid Oxygen last year, we were expecting something good, and we were not disappointed.

The lecturer started on a brief description of the various gases, their preparation and use in wartime. Oxygen for all high altitude flying and nitrogen to manufacture anaesthetics, were made from the fractional distillation of liquid air.

Carbondioxide is extensively used because of its non-inflammabili+y. " H y d r o g e n , " he said, "is made by throwing a few chemicals in the bottom of a steel bottle, jamming a 'bunger' in the top, sitting down watching the needle go round to 2,000 Ibs./sq. inch, and warming your hands by the heat evolved in the process."

A t this stage we have quite a lot of hydrogen and a bit of sludge in the bottom. Hydrogen is used for all "light gas" work, such as in barrage balloons and meteorological balloons.

Oxygen has its largest field in high altitude flying. In a film-strip, we saw the effect of low pressures of 3-4 Ibs./sq. in., experienced at altitudes of about 40,000 feet, on the human body. A t first, there is no appreciable difference, but after a little time there is a remarkable lack of judgment and cohesion between the senses, and finally complete collapse. These tests are all carried out in special pressure tanks. Because of this, masks

Having been a shackled slave to the despot, Industry, for nearly a year, I think I have discovered one reason for it all. W e must work so that our employers can pass on to us a negligible portion of their huge reserves, and we in turn pass it on to the Government.

W e simply act as a medium of transmission.

It seems a fool system to me, but, then, I don't pretend to understand high finance.

All I know is that in my case it is not high enough.

One of the most difficult things to do on starting t o work is t o compute an accurate time-table of the bosses' arrivals. This is to enable you to arrive yourself slightly before them, and so keep your sleeping hours up t o the maximum.

Most places annul your arduous labours in this respect by installing t h a t curse of the working class—the telling time-clock. The crime of it all—that we should be pilgrims to such a mechanical absurdity.

The compensations for this incessant labouring are few—morning and afternoon teas (perhaps), and a special treat on Friday when the Government lets you keep the small change out of your pay envelope. Up to now, I have never worried about wages, strikes, conditions, etc., but now my fervent cry is,

Carbon-dioxide has a big field of application in flying. A t the beginning of the war, most aircraft, when hit by a projectile, just disintegrated. This was due to the fact that an air-petrol vapour mixture formed above the petrol as the tanks were emptied, causing explosion when ignited by the projectile. This was prevented by pumping carbon-dioxide into the tanks, thus preventing an explosive mixture. Carbon-dioxide in small cylinders is used to inflate the rubber dinghies and " M a e Wests," so that the " d i t c h e d " pilot will not sink too far before he has his belt blown up.

The most interesting application, however, is that of the anti-blackout suit which we were told has only been off the secret list since Christmas.

When a pilot makes a sharp turn, the blood, being a fluid, tends to flow to the lower parts of the body, swelling the blood vessels and thus starving the brain. The result of this is, firstly, a lack of hearing, then loss of sight, and finally loss of consciousness. To counteract this a special suit was made, using carbon-dioxide pressure around the legs and abdomen to prevent this swelling of the blood vessels. M r . Ellis told us that the suit was so effective that the pilot now had greater endurance than the machine, which necessitated the use of warning devices to tell him when the plane was going to "pack up.

So all that night the Admiral planned While Mrs. Bill his forehead fanned, A n d in the morning on the sand He came upon an ancient c r a f t — A cross between a boat and raft.

To her he gave the paddle made O f ti-tree fastened t o a spade, Then in the stem his stern he laid A n d d r i f t e d out upon the sea, No admiral so proud as he.

Half-buried in the weed lay she Her bottom up pathetic'lly, A n d on it painted, plain to see, " A c c e p t , dear Bill, this little mark O f my a f f e c t i o n . — O / C 'Ark'."

But now a hurricane drew nigh, Great waves came rolling mountains high, A n d Mrs. Admiral breathed a sign, "Dear Billy, dearer woulds't thou be W e r t thou a cup of billy-tea."

Then loud and long the Admiral sang, A n d louder still his hammer rang.

Then putty knives increased the clang Till all the little Tulum boys Awoke and wondered at the noise.

Then lightning flashed and thunder roared, But proudly still Bill's ensign soared While d own his nose a torrent poured That would have sunk another bark, But could not sink "The Putty Sark."

Now, gentle reader, do not smile, Let tears dim your eyes ewhile, Poor Bill could find no linseed oil, But found instead some mutton-fat A n d mixed the putty up with that.

Her timbers being caulked with flour, Possessed of course self-raising power, Which kept her floating many an hour; But woe, alas, the mutton-fat Was her undoing after that.

A n d since no whiting he could use Save what was left upon his shoes; When that was done he could not choose But make a shift with what he had, So used self-raising flour instead.

For little fish, where'er they be, Upon the pan or out at sea, Love mutton-fat exceedingly.

So when they smelt the admiral's putty One and all they just went nutty.

A n d night and day they plied the knife, The Admiral and the Admiral's wife, Till every seam was trim and t i g h t ; Then merry as a singing lark He christened her, "The Cutty Sark."

Then from their fishy haunts they rose, A n d very soon a fishy nose Had nibbled to the admiral's toes— Down sank the 'Sark" with gurgling sound, A n d Bill and Mrs. Bill were drowned.

To that high ceremony came The Tulum young with eyes aflame; But when they heard her noble name A n d saw that reconditioned bark, They christened her "The Putty Sark."

But now, kind reader, e'er you blink The salt tear from your eyelids, think— Though por old Bill is in "The Drink," Before he died he felt a bite W o u l d give a fisherman delight. .52
