APPRENTICE ACTIVITIES On Thursday, April 1, a film programme featuring the 1953 Redex Trial and the 1953 Davis Cup Round was shown to a large audience in the School Assembly Hall. An invitation had been extended to the Old Boys' Association and approximately forty of their members were present. Another excellent programme was arranged for Apprenticeship Week, it was as follows: Monday—"The God of Creation"; Tuesday—"God of The Atom"; Wednesday — "Voice of the Deep"; Thursday — "Dust of Destiny; Friday — "Hidden Treasure." Two sessions were held daily and after each screening a short address was given by a member of the Footscray Fraternal. Lunchhour film sessions commenced during the second term and are proving very popular. On Thursday, September 23, the feature film, " The Third Man," was shown to a very large audience. First and second term dances have been held at the School Assembly Hall and another is planned for the third term. On August 1, a football match was played between teams representing the Electrical and Boilermaking Apprentices, and resulted in a win for the Electricians. Parties of apprentices have visited the following factories:- James Hardie & Co. Pty. Ltd.; Melbourne Iron and Steel Mills Pty. Ltd.; Steelweld Pty. Ltd.; Victorian Railway Workshops; H.M.A. Naval Dock-
yards; Ordnance Factory, Maribyrnong; National Forge Pty. Ltd. and Mephan Ferguson Pty. Ltd. —T.W. "CRAFTSMANSHIP IN INDUSTRY" To secure the co-operation of engineering industries in Apprenticeship Week, a number of firms were consulted and a meeting of their representatives convened. This meeting approved of a display of industrial exhibits in the School Assembly Hall, and guaranteed support. The display was built up to illustrate "Craftsmanship in Industry" and the following industrial firms participated : John Thompson, Industrial Service Engineers, Ajax Pumps, Australian Glass, Commonwealth Ordnance Factory, Warren & Brown, McKenzie & Holland, Wiltshire Files, C. E. Ebeling, W. G. Goetz, R.V.B. Engineering. The exhibits prepared by these firms were all extremely interesting and most effective, and comfortably filled the areas reserved for this purpose in the Assembly Hall. The official opening on Tuesday, 11th May, was performed by the Hon. A. E. Shepherd, Minister of Education, and the display was open from Tuesday, 11th, to Friday, 14th May, each afternoon (1 - 4.30) and evening (7 - 9 . 3 0 ) . The steady streams of visitors to each session were a favourable comment on the effectiveness of the set-up, and the exhibitors are to be congratulated on the results achieved. VISIT OF THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS The Mechanical Engineering Branch and the Engineering Education Branches of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, held their joint meeting at this School on Thursday, 27th May. About twenty members arrived in time for a light tea, which was provided by the Mothers' Club. At 6.45 a party of about 35 members assembled in the School Hall, and after hearing a brief outline of the set-up of the School, the group was divided into small sections each under the guidance of one School Instructor. The Ballarat Road Unit was first inspected, attention being given to the Diploma Laboratories, Steel Construction, Carpentry, and Plumbing Departments.
