01 Macy’s at Post Oak Mall, College Station Educational Workforce Housing Proposal

This project is an expansion on the recent demand for adaptively reusing dying malls around the country. Through redevelopment of the current Macy’s building here in College Station, I have proposed a city-owned hub for entertainment that is accessible and free to the public while also catering to the issue of affordable housing for teachers and service workers. I worked to integrate public and private entities that interact to form certain programmatic qualities unseen before in the city.

Through complementary programs and thoughtful organizational patterns, we are attempting to link the public and private zones within the site in a manner that generates new, yet cohesive functioning. Integrating such programs will impact not only functionality of smaller zones within the site but also how exterior layers representing a small-scale function transition and interact with a larger scale focal point at the interior of the project.

I began the project by assessing a previous housing project for a similar situation of teacher housing to develop a series of 26 units with a total of 40 bedrooms and decided how to incorporate those into our entertainment destination, which includes a ground floor interface made up of a variety of programs such as a public cinema, a lagoon, several restaurant and bar areas, bathhouses, saunas, a gym, and a childcare center and dog parks for the residents.

This project within the old Macy’s building, incoperates layers of varying programs and uses into zones organized from an exterior layer of private facilities towards a mostly public core. Beginning with the apartment units as a sort of shell for the rest of the layers, then move into a layer of restrooms and semi-private saunas. Even further, are a less private bathhouse and gym layer. And finally, a completely overt cinema experience within an open courtyard at the center of the project. In the exterior portion, the flow is inverted with a public walking path along the outer portion of the site surrounding a lagoon, and moving in towards an increasingly private restaurant then restrooms on the interior.

To organize the layout of these different layers, I utilized the existing structure to create boundaries between spaces. As you can see in the site plan, the layers fall in between a grid of columns forming six different zones stacked vertically on the plan.

The existing columns actually challenged us in creating spaces that make sense next to one another. Eventually I was able to establish a ground floor interface that is feasible and creates the most opportunity.

I took the process of carving out the center of the building to create the out door cinema. It was easy to achieve this due to its existing structure with the columns being aligned perfect to give us the right amount of space for seating to view the movie screen. This approach also allowed us to have a path to the second floor roof top. The roof top is a green space with a food and bar area as well as seating to allow for out door interaction. The second floor is primarily where majority of the units are.

02 House for a musician in a forest Lake Forest, New York

Lake forest offers its residents a private area with popular activities including swimming, kayaking, hiking, skiing, fishing, and many other outdoor activities. This house was generated using an AI program called Midjourney. I achieved this rendered house through a series of many different prompts, and through these prompts I was able to generate a residential vacation home for a musician in the forest. My site is Lake Forest in New York City, where my client wanted a vacation house for getaways, special events, holidays, etc. The most efficient place for their at home recording studio was in the basement so that the room could be properly installed with acoustic insulation with no sounds going through the iso room. The room next to the studio room is an entertainment area or can also be a second living room area, where the musician can relax.

This design takes Le Corbusier style of modern architecture as simplicity and minimalism. Summertime in New York is hot and humid, which is the reason for the large overhang on the south side of the house. This overhang is to provide shade from undesired solar heat, to protect from rainwater. The overhang provides shade to the windows, keeping the home cool in the summer. The curtain wall façade was designed to allow daylight pass through the building during the winter, since New York winter temperatures are cold but not frigid. The curtain wall also provides a beautiful view of the forest. On the second floor there is an area that is open which allows those to view the piano on the first floor. On the first floor you can look through this opening and see the skylight, which is directly over this second-floor open area. I wanted to allow natural daylighting to go pass through this skylight. My intentions while designing this project were to be simple and to achieve a symmetrical design. Due to the reasoning that this will be a vacation home and not a regular house.

03 Texas A&M East Campus Center Student Center

The main goal for this project was to design a student center that offers a variety of programs such as a cafe, study spaces, conference spaces, a public auditorium, common spaces, and creative spaces. This student center serves a place where students can relax, study, hangout with friends, go to the cafe, go the auditorium for a show or presentation. The Site is located at the architecture quad, surrounded by Langford, O&M, Liberal Arts, and the Administration Building.

On the first board, is the site information such as the temperature, daylighting hours, how much rainfall through the year, climate conditions, landscape elements, circulation and movement around the site, and showing the figure and ground.

Through studying the site, the axis lines are what assisted the concept. The concept for this project is the long central core that is surrounded by other programs/spaces. The central space is to allow easy access to other spaces throughout the building, within this central space is a long skylight that I added to provide light and ventilation to the interior. Looking at the floor plans the long central core is eye catching. Level -1 is where all the utilities is are, such as the electrical, mechanical, air handlers, and the boiler rooms. Level 0 is where all of the more public spaces are such as the cafe, auditorium, pre event, creative, support and common spaces. On level 1 is more private, this is where the conference spaces and individual study spaces are located. On the site plan digram are images shown to demonstate the idea within the project such as the bike parking and outdoor seating with covered patio. Within the elevations and roof plan of the student center, the site context shows Langford A, O&M, Administration, and liberal arts. The structural floor plans are included, along with the 3D structure. I also included a section and plan that shows the main space of this project. The last section shows the large atrium, conference room, creative space and the auditorium.

04 Climate Adapation: Greater Houston Houston, Texas

The goal for this project is to design a community center for any natural disasters that occur within the Houston area. It is important to prioritize safety, resilience, and community wellbeing. To minimise the impact of flooding I implemented elevated the spaces as well as electrical systems and essential utilities above potential flood levels. The primary goal is to prioritize safety and wellbeing of the occupants that will be using the shelter during a flood event. Having medical supplies and equipment management is important to guarantee the shelters readiness for any emergency. Having effective emergency evacuations plans are important to consider and multiple evacuation process by doing regular drills to identify potential areas for improvement. Designing for the future involves planning for resilience in the face of potential challenges such as climate change, emissions, flooding, natural disasters, and sea level rise. When deciding a site for my project accessibility was crucial to ensure that the shelter is easily accessible, especially during flooding. Accommodating emergency facilities such as medical areas and evacuation zones help ensure basic needs that can be addressed in case of a flood. Elevated walkways, ramps and other means of access was a design consideration that has access to remain function even when the surrounding area is flooded. Making sure the availability and upkeep of essential medical supplies necessary and equipment is crucial to guarantying the shelter can respond effectively to diverse health needs. Designing a shelter in a flood zone involved specific goals aimed or ensuring safety and wellbeing of the occupants in the face of potential flood events. By utilizing these strategies into architectural design can enhance the sustainability and resilience of buildings by making them better equipped to handle environmental challenges such as extreme weather conditions.

Urban Flooding + Well Being Flood barriers to protect critical infrastructure include levees, dikes, and seawalls. A related strategy is floodproofing, which involves elevating critical equipment or placing it within waterproof containers or foundation systems. Relocating utility infrastructure, such as treatment plants and pump stations, to higher elevations, would reduce risks from coastal flooding and exposure as a result of coastal erosion or wetland loss. Levees, dams, seawalls, and tide gates, work as physical barriers to prevent rising or running water from causing flooding. Other measures, such as pump stations and channels, help reduce flooding.
