The History of Cocooning

The History of Cocooning

And then there was the internet

When I take you back to the good old days in the 70s, going partying all night long was one of the significant types of activities. But once mankind made its way into the early 80s, there was a shift in this specific human behavior. There were restaurants sitting with empty tables in the weekends and the dressing up and see your friends in bars around town was replaced by something way less active: Cable TV. This particular invention made its way into households and everyday life way faster than imagined and quickly became the superior activity above partying and going out. Why? Well, the Cable TV gave opportunities to almost every person in the household to place themselves in front of a tv screen and just stay there. For parents it showcased more and more movies and sports while for children it showcased their favorite to be cartoons. But the you-can-stay-home inventions didn’t end with the Cable TV. In 1983 the great invention of the (now unmissable) internet took place. People all of the sudden had the allowance to search, in the 80s, almost everything they wanted and needed. Before this invention mothers would go to their friendly neighbors to for example ask something about a recipe or fathers would connect in each other’s barns to discuss how to build this or that. This all was less common after the invention of then internet since people could search all of these on the computer. From easy and hard recipes, to do-it-yourself guidelines.

How Popcorn has predicted the future

Faith Popcorn also saw this major shift in social behavior. When you read the name Faith Popcorn, you may have heard about this person before. She is a successful futurist, author and CEO of her own marketing company called BrainReserve (that has a 95% accuracy track record for predicting cultural trends). After her studies at NYU she worked around eight years for an advertising company and later on started her own company in 1974. One of the major marketing advises she gave were to Coca-Cola that they should investigate and eventually go into bottled water and to Kodak to go into digital instead of print. But what is her connection with the behavior shift in the early 80s? Well, she was the person that gave it a name. She, even before the internet was invented and just Cable TV was around, already called it “cocooning”. This word became so well adapted into human lives that it even landed in the dictionary. Her prediction that came with naming this “trend” was that humans would want to protect ourselves from the crazy realities of the outside world. We would rather stay home, and watch videos than physically go and see a movie.

Differences within cocooning

According to Faith and her explained vision of cocooning in her 1990 book The Popcorn Report: The Future of Your Company, Your World, Your Life she gives us three different types of cocooning. First up there is the socialized cocoon that retreats to the privacy of its own home. Second in row is the armored cocoon, which establishes himself a barrier to protect itself from external threats. Lastly, we have the wandering cocoon. This type travels with a technological barrier which serves to insulate one from the environment.

What 4 decades of technology does

Between 1980, when the term was officially rolled into society, and anno 2020 there has been a various amount of changes and different views on what cocooning is. In 1980 the Cable TV and internet were the dominant factors that made us stay home more. 40 years later, a lot of new technologies and opportunities evolved to make staying at home easier than ever. First enormous factor; our smartphone. In this era of the technological integration into our daily lives, living without one is almost impossible. With just one device we can search the world wide web, stream videos and movies, read and write emails, do bank transfers and shop for an almost endless amount of product variation online. Speaking of this last benefit, shopping online has never been this easy. With just one click you can order your favorite sweater, and have it delivered within one business day, if not the same day. When we talk about ordering clothes online, this is just a very small percentage of all the variety that can get delivered to your door. If you have the Amazon app installed on your phone, just simply open it and search for anything you want, and you will find it. Delivered directly to your door.

Cocooning in a pandemic

When we place the term cocooning in the critical year of 2020, there are a lot of things to say about these two combined. As we all know, 2019 ended in not the greatest way we expected. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in Wuhan, China, the World Health Organization officially called of an international emergency on January 30th, 2020. Just seven days after China put Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, in lockdown and followed up by put out a nationwide one. Now, in the middle of spring season the world still is in full isolation. Asia and Europe have had a very strict and solid isolation of around two months, while the United States of America and parts of South America are starting to enter a nationwide isolation when the Middle East one is coming to its end. The word pandemic was for many people something they never wanted to hear in their lives, or hear again after the pandemics that’ve taken place in the past (for example; the 1918 and 2009 H1N1 pandemic and the 1968 H3N2 pandemic).

Turning isolation into conversation

Now, what is the so important factor that cocooning brings beneficial to this quarantine-situations? Well, since nobody is allowed to leave their houses for invalid reasons, it is obligated to stay inside for as long as the virus keeps spreading around. And since cocooning is all about feeling comfortable in your own house and keep yourself busy while being inside, this trend has established enough to be well-adapted into the current situation that 2020 is going through. People are working from home, which gives people who are always at their office or on the road for work more home. People can finally refurbish that one spot in their house they say they would do for years now. From making banana bread every day to dying and bleaching our hair every other week. This quarantine has given us the possibility to do the stuff we postponed for so many years, which is one of the positive outcomes of this unforeseen happening. Another great positive element of this time and place we now need to live in, is turning isolation into conversation. With people not being able to see friends or family members, online conversations and videocalls are used more than ever. Organized yoga-classes through video calling services, having the usual Friday afternoon apéro with colleagues through FaceTime.

The negative parts about this cocooning we have to endure now is that many people have lost their jobs or are currently unable to do their professions at home or without any social contact. Another negative part is that people cannot see their family, and most importantly their grandparent since they are the high-risk age group of not surviving the virus unfortunately. This is, alongside the whole cocooning opportunity, a very serious matter and we should not look at this happening with just the positive eye. This after all is a virus that created a worldwide pandemic that sadly takes and already has taken way too many lives that anybody would wish for. It is a very unfortunate and painful time for a lot of people who are not able to see their loved ones or people that lost a family member because of this COVID-19.

Born in a cocooning trend

When not focusing us on the technological part, cocooning still has evolved more and more over the decades that have passed since it first was determined. The curve of people wanting to stay home and just be by themselves has drastically increased. Beside all the in-home technologies and factors that the daily life us easily provide, people have found more and more comfort in being at their home. Millennials were born and raised in times where cocooning was established and had its uprising in daily lives. This was something they passed on to their Gen Z children who were born in the booming evolution of technology. From a very young age, children from this generation are exposed to factors such as smartphones, tablets, smart tv’s and so much more that provides them everything they need to stay in-home and entertain themselves daily with watching their favorite YouTuber or watch a children’s Netflix series (because Netflix has its own kids-section) or the newly enrolled streaming service of Disney+. The new generations are able to work more and more from home and also love to do that. From work they normally do at their work office and are progressively able to do it from home, to students that prefer doing essays and studying in their own room than doing it in school, on campus or in libraries.

Writer’s opinion

In general speaking of how people integrate the obligatory to stay inside I think it is safe to say that people have easily accommodated their normally very social and busy life to the less social contact standards now. People do see the extremely importance of saving other lives with staying inside and try to make the best out of it. It is only we as a population and as humans that we can restore the fun and easy life we once had before this pandemic. It is with sacrifice that mankind will become better than before. When it comes to my opinion about what has all been discussed in this article, I think that for Faith to determine this trend in the 80s was a very smart way of investigating something that has evolved so rapidly and big to this date and age we are now living in. It was already a little bit determined that with the introduction of Cable TV and the internet that lives at home would become easier, but nobody expected that the at-home services would boom to a level that it has become in 2020. If we could time travel to a time where Cable TV or internet did not exist nor did there was any insight on an eventually introduction of this and tell people that five or six decades later there would be this much variety to choose from of thing we could do just with one simple click on a mouse from the laptop on or lap in our couch, not many people would believe that this is what the future would bring. The unforeseen forced quarantine that 2020 brought along was a very good opportunity for people that did not exercise a lot of cocooning to take time to sit back and enjoy the littler things. Enjoy the sun shining, flowers blossoming and being able to look outside and see all the things nature and life bring to our lives for free. Even though the circumstances of this whole pandemic and too many people dying is the major displeasing feeling this way of living brings, it is a simple task and effort to achieve a greater cause when the world and lives restore to the way they a year ago were. My final words are that cocooning is trend that has become an almost daily happening for a huge percentage of the world’s population. People over the year became to more and more love being home, doing work from home and making sure their lives in home are stable just as the live they live outside their houses and are now able to combine those two to rule and succeed just from their own, cozy houses.

As the fashion industry is changing, so are the trends. We are all starting to adapt, as a blazer doesn’t make very much sense while on the couch. Here is our “it” list for this month. All things to be worn at home or on the way to the grocery store. We want you to feel comfortable but fabulous. It doesn’t matter that you have no where to go. Check out our list and enjoy your balcony cocktails or your workout in style.

CYBER SEX

CYBER SEX

The undeniable truth is that almost everyone today, who knows what the internet is and how it works, knows about cyber sex. With access being easier than ever to unlock millions of pornographic images, videos, and live streamings with just the click of your mouse, it’s no wonder so many people are feeling curious and even confused about this industry. As the writer of this article I think it is only fair to disclaim that this article is only scratching the surface of such a huge topic.

Some of you may be asking, “where did cyber sex come from?” or “when did this all start?”. In no way is “cyber sex” a new fad or a cool trend that has just started recently. The boom of internet in the 90s saw the birth and the growth of what is the online porn industry. Before the internet, men and woman could satisfy their fantasies with porn stars on videos that could be purchased or rented in sex shops. Before pornographic videos, the world had pornographic magazines that could provide that same anonymous sexual excitement. Now, In 2020, you can really choose how deep your involvement is with your online sex life. Do you want to have a personal connection with a cam star? Do you want to subscribe to an onlyfans account along with many others? Or do you just want to have a sexy intimate FaceTime with your partner? The options are endless on how serious you want your cyber sex life to be, or to even have one at all.

Cyber Sex in the Media

The media, especially in music, television, and movies have capitalized on the idea by adding cybersex related topics in all types of music genres and storylines.

Twenty four year old pop star Doja Cat has even made a hit song called “Cybersex”, in which she goes into detail about her relationship (real or not) with her online sex life. She also includes lyrics about popular applications such Tinder, Instagram, and Skype which are often nowadays used for a way to meet people online and potentially have a video meetup and “get freaky on camera” as Doja Cat says in her single.

In regards to movies and television series, a relatively new one that has become very popular among teenagers, “Euphoria”, has a specific character, “Cat”, whose storyline follows her secret cyber sex life. Cat starts off as a somewhat shy and overlooked girl in high school. As the storyline continues she soon discovers a new life of becoming a cam girl for money. As she meets with clients who adore, typically older men, she is shocked to find out they want to her to humiliate, talk down, and dominate them. For her services her clients gift her with items from her wishlist. As a result of this exchange, Cats character gains in self confidence throughout the episodes and she becomes the kind of girl she’s always wanted to be. With her self esteem on an all time high she goes through the rest of the school year sexy, smart and unapologetically sure of herself.

It’s important to take into account that this representation of a cam girl may be the media romanticizing the idea of cyber sex. After all, season two isn’t out yet and who knows what could happen to Cat. This positive idea of cyber sex is only showing one side of a story and when it comes to the complexity of cyber sex, there are too many sides to cover in this short article.

Controversy Around Cyber Sex

Of the multitude of questions that cyber sex could spark, could being a “cam girl” be a good thing? Is this empowering sex workers and giving them more confidence than they ever thought they had? Or on the other hand is cyber sex doing the opposite and undermining these cam girls? Is asking a cam worker to provide specific services for payment different from any other job? Providing a service for money. The principles of services for payment are the same but the product is somebody’s body which makes the topic explode with controversy.

There is endless content that contributes to the “not so good” side of the pornographic industry, which can feature many objectifying images that are damaging to your brain. In todays world this kind of content may seem normal to watch or can feel like everyone else is watching the same thing, but little is known the long term effects this can have on your sex life. With unrealistic expectations of what sex really is and is not, the type of sexual content you expose to your mind is crucial.

If you are someone who identifies as a woman, you may feel exhausted of the gender-based violence that the main stream porn industry is offering you. Why not look into ethical porn? You will be pleasantly surprised to know that there are many female porn directors devoted to making porn from realistic view made for women by women.

If you are someone who identifies as a man, you too may be tired of feeling the pressure to be the stereotypical overpowering aggressive man that everyone expects you to be. You also would appreciate ethically made pornographic content. We need to think of the condition the workers are put in and if they are something you would like to support. Which cam workers are you supporting? Is this a person who is choosing to do this career or someone who is being forced? Does this person have proper pay? What are their working conditions? These are all things we need to take into account when we chose what kind of content we want to support. Plus the more realistic and raw the content is, the better this will be for your own mind when you have your real life sexual encounters.

Cyber Sex + Quarantine

The internet has taken the world by storm with the endless amount of content on cyber sex. With everyone cast away in their homes and not to come in physical contact with anyone, the world is sexually frustrated and horny! We are social beings, and for

that matter, helloooo, we are also sexual beings. For those who are sexually active regularly with a partner or have hookups every other day, they likely dying from that sexual desire building inside them. Most people probably would prefer to have real life interactions with a partner, but with this world wide lock down, we can start to take advantage of the advances technology has given to us. Now more than ever is cyber sex in high demand!

With endless content on the internet there are more ways than ever to give yourself that sexual satisfaction you’ve been wanting from your own home. There are chatrooms waiting to be joined from all over the world. Millions and millions of videos with every different niche of porn you can think of. Whatever your kink is, there is a video for you. Start exploring all the internet has to offer. This world wide lock down is the perfect opportunity for you to explore yourself sexually. What do you like to watch, and why? How do you touch yourself? What turns you on the most? Write all of these things down. Make goals for yourself that you want to achieve in your future sex life. Knowing yourself on a deeper level will help in more ways than you can imagine when you become sexually active again with your partner(s).

Say for example, you are woman who is super shy with yourself sexually. Why not watch super sexy confident woman performing live on camera? It could help you see sex in a more fun and playful way. The many messages the media gives us about women sexuality can be conflicting. This can leave women feeling a bit uncomfortable or confused on how to behave sexually. This is where we as individuals have to take our sex lives into our own hands. No pun intended. If you want to be a more sexual being, it helps to look at sex in a good and positive light. If your whole life you have only been given a negative outlook on sex, it would be expected that you are going to have troubles performing sexually with a partner or even just with yourself. This quarantine is without a doubt the perfect time to take control with your sexuality and get educated. We have endless information at our finger tips, it only makes sense for us to take this opportunity. Just make sure the content you decide to show yourself is the right image of sex that you want your brain to receive.

How to Have Cyber Sex

Of course there is no right or wrong way to have cyber sex. There are endless options available. You can be a watcher, you can be a performer, or you can do both! Cyber sex doesn’t have to be as scary as it may seem just because the internet is involved. In no way am I suggesting the only way to participate in cyber sex is by getting naked on camera and exposing yourself to the world. In fact, I don’t ever suggest exposing yourself on camera if you don’t know all the risks and problems that can come with cyber sex. The internet is forever and like I stated, the world still has its stigma around sex and nudity so we have to keep this in mind and not be naive.

However if you are someone open to this and have educated yourself on the risks, why not give it a try? You could start watching others to get inspiration and ideas, then turn on your webcam and try it yourself. If you have a specific person you want to try this with, why not get on FaceTime and try it together. Too shy for FaceTime? How about sending a sexy message to your partner about all the things you want to do with them, once you’re both out of quarantine. All of these things can be done with someone you are comfortable with or even a complete stranger.

You will shocked to know how many strangers meet online everyday waiting to get that sexual excitement they desire. Meeting up online with people you don’t know might sound strange or scary at first, however many people find this concept a huge ego booster. Knowing theoretically there are endless amounts of people that would love to see you touch yourself, undress, or even do unrelated sex activities, it’s no wonder so many people report feeling empowered and more confident after doing cyber sex related practices. Especially when they are not used to feeling uplifted sexually in their everyday life.

Final Thoughts

To try and wrap up a topic that could be talked about endlessly, I think cyber sex is all about what you decide to make of it. Maybe you don’t want to make it anything at all, and thats okay too! Your sexual being is unique to you and your values and opinions on sex are yours to keep. You should always make sure whatever you decide to do with your online sex life is your choice and nobody else’s. Do only what pleases you and makes you feel comfortable and safe. For those who are open to trying a few new things, write down your feelings through your experiences and you will soon start to discover things you never even knew about yourself in the process. My biggest suggestion is to stay educated about sex, intimacy, and love as much as you can throughout your whole sexual discovering process. It is important to set goals and make decisions based on what feels good to you deep down. Unravel yourself and get lost in what pleasures you and what makes you feel good. Why do you like certain things and not others? Discover what makes you feel the most comfortable and reassured in such a vulnerable act as sex is. Take the time to ask the hard questions and not be afraid to forgive yourself for past mistakes you’ve made or things that have made you feel negatively towards your sexuality.

ART IN TIMES OF CONFINEMENT

I remember. Not too long ago, waking up before the sunrise, getting ready as fast as possible, taking the overcrowded underground with my coffee in hands, hopefully waiting for someone to stand up and I, luckily, sit to wait for the station I would jump out.

“Excuse me, sorry!” I think I repeated 3 times until I could pass the doors of the train that was about to close, already. It was March the 1st, last moments of Paris Fashion Week. I had heels on, running on the streets of Paris (it was not a good idea…). However, I could not wait for the spectacle I was about to involve myself in. All the creative hardworking people, mixed with colors, fabrics, music. I have worked and waited for this the whole year, basically.

I have a memory of my excitement and a feeling of anxiety - but the good kind.

There, I saw a pastel color palette from the autumn, winter 2020/2021 collection. The models running back and forward, almost as a blurred

painting. Shadows, makeup, creative hairstyles, accessories, shoes, all the production! From design… until photographers… The high rated critics with their technical point of view, already bringing creative writing to life in their minds.

Most people do not realize how much art is created for that event. In that single space. Today, in a blink of the eyes, we are all home. Here, me and my memories of what now seems to be far away from reality. Alike a puzzle that space had in its pieces, its own artistic way of life. It all feels like yesterday, but it also sounds like another life…

Far away from the crowded cultural streets of Paris, far from the movies, and colorful events, we are forced to take a long and sometimes uncomfortable look to ourselves. To try to find out what we can do to kick out anxiety, and uncertainty. Chatting to many friends and watching the news, I figure out we are all looking for a breath of fresh air inside our own walls.

After a moment of “dawn!. There is nothing to do at home!!”, by having a looking at my room, I found what (in that “old normal” daily routine) was lost. The tall shelves, full of books, old vinyl, CDs, DVDs, and a box with even older pictures reminded me of that color pallet from that event. Would this nostalgic mood, be a trend nowadays?

I took my favorite childhood CD, from ABBA, to play in my mom`s vintage CD player that was not in use since God knows when… Listening (maybe also dancing...) - do not laugh - the Dancing Queen, I went through those shelves, inspiring myself with what, once upon a time, was a treasure forgotten in my own house.

From that day, I inspired myself to open my mind to one million possibilities and ways we can get in contact with art from home.

Leading creativity to other levels, meaning innovation and a new way of thinking. We are much more connected to our favorites TV series now, we finally have time to read that book that we never had enough time and energy to do so. Or even that inspiring idea of painting a frame.

On that day, moving things around, I found a picture lost between books and CDs. It was my dad and I, a long time ago, painting together. How could I forget we used to paint together? That is why, here I am now, in front of tint, brushes, and my on-going “artistic movement” at my own house.

It is more important than ever to reconnect ourselves to what is here, now! A moment to express the frustrations and doughts of what is happening, and also celebrate life, family, and heroes out there. It is time to think about a new start ahead of us. And how we are going to write our next chapters. For that, there is no need to go too far. All the tools are in the most comfortable place on earth. At home. Art in times of confinement has now, a new personal meaning.

Isolation can lead us to increase creativity.

In the world of literature, painting, and music, isolation is intertwined with creativity. “Without great solitude, no serious work is possible,” said Pablo Picasso. The famous Spanish painter seamed to understand well the difference between solitude and loneliness. The noisy influence from outside can easily fade the true call from our essence and great ideas inside us.

Jean-Dominique Bauby, French journalist, and former editor-in-chief from ELLE France, after a stroke, woke up to a new reality: Physically paralyzed, diagnosed with “Locked-in syndrome”. Which he is still mentally aware. Jean wrote a book choosing letters by blinking his eyes, explaining his new vision of life. This is a real ex-

ample of how we can encourage souls and, absolutely make the most of isolation by expressing ourselves with what we already have at home.

We are finally comprehending that we can live without planes, restaurants, or physical shopping. And we confirmed that we would not live without movies, books, or music. The fine line between getting crazy and staying sane its in the art. That is why culture, in any way, is so important whatever if you are in a room full of people or in safety, at home.

In four quick interviews, via Facetime, I have asked: two painters, one photographer, and a dancer, what are their opinion on how important is the art in this moment of life, and what inspires them in this chaotic world that we are living in.

“On empty days like these, our insatisfaction is transformed in art. I love drinking whiskey while I am in front of a canvas, the mix of colours and my liquor revels me the hidden colours inviting me into a new vibe, almost like a prayer. A cure.”

THRIVING AT HOME

In current emergency situations like pandemy, people have no choice but to stay at home for the sake of themselves and their surroundings. While some individuals find it stressful, others are enjoying the moment of isolation. How this phenomenon affects different personas and how to thrive in social isolation and make your home the best place to live in? In this article we will basically elaborate how to thrive at home and what can help you to make your place the most wonderful to spend your time.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HOME

As a human being, we all need a shelter and a place, that we call home. A place, which keeps us secure, private and gives a feeling of belonging and identity. A lecturer at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, identifies four main elements, that adds the significance on people’s perceptions of their homes, old people in particular. The first factor is the emotional attachment. Since the childhood, we have been collecting memories, that finally stuck in our mind and give warm feelings, emotional associations to the place, where we were born and spent our early years and pre-adulthood life. The second is familiarity with physical ambience and sounds in t

he house. One can readily recognize sounds, that belong to his house, smells and sense of touch. The third element is about knowing your neighbors and being comfortable with your neighborhood. The last factor is the most vital aspect, which is about sense of identity. There is a deep and strong emotional connection between our homes and us, as we see our homes as a place for an emotional escape. At the end of the long working day, we all want to go home and recharge our batteries. These are the reasons why human beings give such a tremendous significance to their homes. Thus, when building a house and decorating it, people try to convey their identities and personalities, by creating a cozy atmosphere which will bring you a pleasure when returning home at the end of the day.

HOW ISOLATION AFFECTS DIFFERENT PERSONAS?

Firstly, isolation limits the space, but not the opportunity. Due to different characteristics of people, everyone accepts the isolation in different ways. Apparently, from a psychological point of view, there are 3 group of people - introverts, extroverts and ambiverts. People, who initially prefered to be socially passive and avoid too crowded places, like introverts, actually enjoy being at home and find it as an outstanding opportunity to do things, that they could not do before on account of active social life. Nevertheless, they also have to maintain their social well-being and keep balance by making calls and socializing online, or it can lead to negative effects. Meanwhile, extroverts, who tend to be sociable and can’t make it without active lifestyle, might have mental issues and stress as a result of lack of communication. Apparently, they are undergoing more challenges than other types of personalities. However, they need to go beyond social networks and Zoom parties, and do sports, dance or have a short walk, otherwise it might also end up with being overwhelmed, so it is always a good idea to set up some restrictions and limits to pace yourself. Ambiverts, on the other hand, are people in between. However, with the contemporary opportunities of technology, people are still having parties online on Zoom, they still celebrate birthdays online, the way of socializing has been altered and adapted to current times. The world now realizes that we did not actually need most of the things before, and now once people carry out meetings, parties, even fashion shows online, the life is never going to be the same as it was months ago.

face during staying home is the presence of other people in the house. There are couples, families and roommates sharing the same house. It might be challenging for an extrovert to reside with an introvert and vice versa. A recent study by American Psychological Association says that both introverts and extroverts felt better after having active virtual social behavior during the week. As well as this, for those who share a living space with others, it is suggested to come to compromises and divide a certain amount of time for daily social life and personal time for yourself. The survey done by Washington Post (2020) reports that couples tried to mitigate these discrepancies in social demeanour by allocating day time and allowing an extroverted partner to be loud and do social activities during the day, while in the evening they could spend time together, thus avoiding extra arguments between each other.

There is a widespread trend on social networks going nowadays, where everybody shares pictures of themselves spending these days productively, by doing sport, cooking, reading books and staying active. However, this fake productivity and image of a perfect isolation can make some people stressful, it’s up to a person whether to be productive and do what society tells us to do, or sleep and snack all around the day. People blame those “active” bloggers, that they make people’s self-esteem lower and make them feel guilty every time when they are wasting their time sitting on sofa. This social pressure, where everybody is having online courses and doing sport, one feels himself guilty for not being like others. Not everybody has to follow social rules and everyone has his own way of enjoying isolation and there is not a sole formula for that. Thus, it depends on an individual’s personality, his preferences and tastes.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME THE BEST PLACE TO THRIVE?

There are several factors, that might affect your mood during social isolation at home and accordingly, there are certain ways of solving out these problems. Certainly, following suggestions may not be applicable to each personality, because there is not a sole formula for that and everybody decides on his own, but these ideas might reach out to those, who still assume that being locked at home is the most stressful thing in their lives. The light, design, color palette and amount of space in your home can be huge triggers of your different moods. Above all, home is not just a place, where you sleep and spend your spare hours, it is indeed part of self-definition. People and their homes are connected, our homes are actually reflections of our inner world, that is why our mood and motivation throughout a day depends on the ambience that we create at our places.

Color also plays a crucial role. It’s important to keep your furniture and other details in a house look harmonious in terms of color, as it’s known, many stress cases are recorded due to spending much time in spaces with intense or contrast colors. Colors can be provokers of bad mood and depression, so surround yourself with calm colors. Paint your walls in more minimal, aspiring shades, according to your preferences, make sure that the overall image of the house goes well in harmony all together. Sometimes being surrounded by same colors can be tedious, in this case try to change what surrounds you and do not be afraid to experiment. It is obvious that mundane ambience in the house will impact on your productivity, meaning that you need some changes. For example, relocating the furniture will bring the difference and some update into your home design.

In order to make a perfect space, which will inspire you and affect your mood positively, there are certain things to consider. Getting rid of things, that you no longer use, might be a great idea even from a psychological point of view. Storing up old packagings, boxes or useless souvenirs will supplant a space. By throwing away or donating old things, that you no longer need, you will open new doors and opportunities for new things to come into your life. That can be organizing your closet and doing away with pieces, that you no longer wear, or organize your kitchen and spa space. Thus, organizing every shelf and room to make a clear order will help a lot to organize your inner mind as well. Once our surroundings are clearly organized, it impacts our personality and you start being more organized as well. You can also practise that on your social media accounts, by unfollowing and muting accounts, that are spoiling your feed and just leave those pages, that you really show interest to.

Art is also another therapy while staying socially isolated at home. Hanging art pieces, like pictures can be an idea for decorating your house and bringing you a bunch of positive vibes. Even if you are bad at art and can not draw, according to studies, drawing is known as one of the most effective stress killers and sedatives. There are many options nowadays, where you may draw without any basic skills, like painting the picture by numbers. Many find it as a stress revealing and calm therapy, on top of that, you realize you may draw without any talent or being gifted.

It goes without saying that sport is the common stress killer and source of motivation, good spirit and healthy mind. It could be challenging to get motivated for doing sport in the beginning, however, it is proved to be one of the most effective ways to spend your time at home. Doing sport does not necessarily requires special equipment, there are plenty of online tutorials, where you can do daily activities at home, including pilates, yoga and simple gymnastics.

Another sedative, particularly for women, is cooking, no matter how cliche is sounds. It has been recorded that many people prefer cooking as a type of self-therapy while staying home, this also helps people to appreciate homemade food and realize its importance over restaurant food. Also, for some relaxation and enjoyment at the end of the day it is recommended to take a bath, with aromatic smell. This will relax your body and you will have a better sleep.

To spend your days more efficiently, try to organize a schedule of your activities throughout a day and most importantly, do not overwhelm yourself too much, try to distribute everything according to your capabilities. At the end of the each day, mark completed activities, thus you feel the effect of your productivity and this will inspire you to complete more tasks the day after.

To keep positive vibes and maintain some humour, spend your cozy evenings watching a comedy movie or show, drinking a cup of hot chocolate or set of fruits. Provide and surround yourself with those things, that raise a smile on your face and bring you joy.

For sure, at some point, a person might also get

fed up with all these listed activities and feel completely tired, lacking energy and motivation to stay productive. Many people find it challenging to focus on working or studying while staying at home, because mainly our home is supposed to be a place, where we relax and have a rest. Basically, during a normal schedule, majority of people give a preference to study and work in special spaces with good internet, or some cafes and libraries, where a person is surrounded in the atmosphere of working people and as a result, getting motivated to be productive. On account of this, it might get stressful in the beginning to concentrate the focus on staying productive, however, there are several stages of reaction to the isolation. At first, people get frustrated from the idea that they will be isolated, but some days after, they admit this fact and turn to watching movies, whiling away and relaxing. Next, they might finally start realizing that doing nothing and chilling all the day also takes away energy and even more, when you are actually proactive.

At this given moment, most of the humanity is locked in their homes and this is the moment to realize how our homes are crucial to us both psychologically and mentally. It turns out now that everything, including work, studies, fashion shows, photoshoots, TV shows can be conducted by dint of current technologies. The idea of being locked in homes for a while was a terrible fact that frustrated many of us, therefore, it is instrumental to understand how connected we are to our habitats. When we face the situation, where we have to rest at home, we should not be sad, on the contrary, we should be happy about staying in a place, which we made a best place for ourselves.

The Self Love Movement

Unconditional self love. To some of us, this may sound like an unattainable dream. With a world that is sought after external beauty now more than ever, it is amazing to also not being able to not notice this “self love” movement going on today, especially among the younger generations.

With the world most attractive celebrities and icons having more and more ways than ever to enhance their natural faces, the rest of us feel like we cant keep up! Why is this something mass media has tried to drill into our brains so much? What is it about our external beauty that is so bloody important? I bet most of us would love to wake up each morning and not even have a slight urge to look in the mirror because we know, that no matter what you, yourself, and everyone who is around you is going to think you are beautiful. Sounds like a dream if you ask me.

Being a woman (and I’m sure this applies to men as well) being beautiful would sure save me lots of money on makeup, hair products, face masks, tanning products and the list goes on. Of course we don’t have to do these things and sometimes it feels nice when we do take that extra care of ourselves or have a special occasion that we want to look more jazzed up than our everyday selves.

There is no problem for this at all and I think rather normal to want to try things out, express yourself through a new hair style or makeup trend, its fun and I think very healthy for us to have these desires.

However, the problem of all of these artificial things is when they start to define how you feel about your own true natural beauty and perceive the way you start to look at yourself. When you start to rely on these material things to define your beauty because you think your natural beauty isn’t good enough anymore. That’s when all this “stuff” starts to become a problem.

Personally my mother started letting me wear makeup on an everyday basis (after begging her to death) when I was 12 years old and I think all of the girls in America started around the same age from 12-16. Even though it wasn’t much, just a simple mascara, it was enough to change how I saw myself on a daily basis and made me like myself more with just that little bit of makeup and changed the way I perceived myself. I didn’t think my bare face was my “normal face” now, I was so used to seeing myself with makeup on that “that” face became my new “normal face”. For that matter everyone else around you who sees you everyday with makeup on will start to think that is how your “normal face” is also. Once it becomes a habit it becomes a very hard cycle to break free from.

To feel ok with your natural beauty once again. So there sparks my first question, how can we change our mindsets back to how they were? In quarantine is no better time to do that hard work for yourself and to give yourself those positive affirmations you deserve and have been craving .

“You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.”
Dita Von Teese.

Change Your Mindset

The truth is, the thing about beauty is that it’s not external at all, or the reason something is externally beauty is either seen by your societies expectations of beauty or because the inner core of that person or thing is healthy and well from the inside. Once your inner core is happy, healthy and thriving it will show externally. Haven’t you ever met someone who’s entire aura and energy was extremely attractive and shined so brightly that their whole external appearance took a back burned to what you thought of them? Its so refreshing to know that it’s possible to have such an amazing personality that makes people forget all about our outer appearance to the point that their whole perception of you is based around who you truly are. Now to not care at all about your outward appearance isn’t the exact point I’m trying to make here. Of course its nice to shower, groom yourself in a presentable way to put your best foot forward so that people don’t get a completely wrong impression of you at first sight. If you’r going in for a job interview, look accordingly. If you’r going on a date maybe put on a nice red lipstick, or don’t! The point of all of this is that you should feel comfortable and confident enough with who you really are inside that you know your appearance soon will take the high way when it comes to how that person sees you. Say if you don’t get the job you interviewed for or your first date doesn’t go as planned. You need to have enough self esteem and a strong inner core that you value of your self worth never decreases or increases with whatever life may throw at you. I think if we all spent the same amount of time as we do on our outer appearance to our inner core and your mental health, we would all be much more stable people and handle good and bad situations with ease. Instead of spending countless hours finding solutions on how to make your curly hair sit straight or how to cover it up, spend the time learning to love it and embrace it! In the long run this is a much more effective solution and

you will be happier in the long run. If you fix external things for temporary amount of time, you will always know that naturally you don’t look like that and be always very conscious of this. Getting a permenant procedure will always leave a shame of knowing that something externally defeated you and have a bit of shame over that and knowing that this new feature, is not really you. According to deccanchronicle.com 65% of women regret their cosmetic surgery afterwards. Of course with cosmetic surgery being so popular among the young celebrities and surgeries are starting to look more and more natural its hard to tell whats real and what isn’t. To be quite honestly it’s shit for the rest of normal people in our natural body’s to see these girls flaunting their “natural beauty” around when they themselves don’t look like that. Thus, causing the effect of the normal people feeling like we aren’t normal. The reality is its all lies! We are the normal ones, born from our mothers and growing into who we were destined to be since day one. Not a reformed edited version of ourselves with lip fillers, the highest cheekbones possible, and the smallest nose we can imagine. It’s high time we stop praising those who are lying to us.

Take Action

Now I know it’s one thing to say you are beautiful and actually feel like it, believe me. The problem is, is that everyone is basing their beauty only from their physical appearance. That’s why loving yourself isn’t working. Your not going to wake up one day and all the sudden, you love your giant nose or the mole on your forehead. You need to love yourself deeper than that. On a personal level. Think about your best friend, why do you love her/him. Your first thing that comes to mind isn’t gonna be “his big muscles” or “her small waist”. You’r most likely going to be commenting on their character, personality traits, how that person makes you feel. Same rules apply for breakups. Have you ever got dumped because your jawline wasn’t sharp enough? Again, everything comes back to who you actually are as a person not as a beautiful object with no life or depth to them. So take care of your soul first when looking to be the best possible version of yourself. Allow yourself enjoy the wonders of life. Nourish your body with foods your body loves. Move your body everyday with a nice walk around your neighborhood, don’t bring your phone and just reflect, talk to yourself. Dance and laugh with your friends, let loose and don’t take yourself too serious. Drink water, think of yourself as a beautiful flower that needs the proper nutrients to grow and grow. Give your body the rest it needs, know when you’ve done so much that your body is telling you it needs a break. Learn how to say no to people when you’r well-being is at stake.

possible person they can be? So why aren’t we doing that for ourselves? Taking care of ourselves as a mother would. With its best interest in mind. Why are putting our well being on the back burner? Set goals for yourself and how you are going to accomplish those goals and set deadlines for those goals. You, are not something you should be sacrificing for anyone or anything else. Put you first.

Quarantines hidden gem

I know it sounds a bit silly or even weird but imagine you had a baby. Wouldn’t you want to care for it the best you possibly can so that when he/she grows up they will be the best

For many of us, the world wide quarantine can feel like it has just ruined your huge 2020 plans, but think of this quarantine from a different point of view. Is this lock down just what we needed? When will you ever get another time to stay home so much and spend time with yourself? This is the time to learn to fall in love with yourself, to start accepting who you are. Of all the things that have been taken away from us during this quarantine, time for ourselves is what we have gained. Start to meditate, journal, create art work that represents something to you. If your schedule in to your day just 15-30 minutes of time where you do something that will make you feel good about yourself after, this can tremendously change your inner core value. To do something only for your enjoyment and that you feel proud after doing, might leave you feeling good about yourself and wanting to do things for yourself more often. Think of self love as doing practices to honor you. Honoring yourself can come in endless forms, it’s up to you to choose something you would love to do for yourself. It can be cooking yourself your favorite meal. It can writing your future self a letter. It can be as simple as cleaning your room because you deserve a nice living environment. You can literally choose from so many ways of what you want to do as a form as self love. Now as a time with so much time on our hands we need to try to make this a routine in our everyday lives.

PARIS FASHION WEEK A/W 2020 EXPERIENCE

The contributors of our magazine had internships at fashion shows and showrooms and attended some shows during Paris Fashion Week for AW 20 season. I will personally share with my review, as well as interview Victoria Itagyba and Pirrie Wright about their opinions on their internships and attended shows.

I was an intern during Lemaire show, a label of a French designer Christophe Lemaire, who previously has been an artistic director of Hermes. Now he interprets his vision in fashion in his own brand through minimalistic clothes, yet comfortable and contemporary. He is leading his brand alongside with his partner Sarah Linh. This time for AW collection, Lemaire decided to go beyond his usual shows and showcase a railway station at the university of St Germain des Pres in Paris. I participated in the rehearsal few days before the show, as the walk of the models was not synchronous, there were group of 3-4 models, thus a walk of each model should have been practiced and confirmed by Mr. Lemaire. The interesting thing was about model casting, because Lemaire is known for being very diverse in terms of models at his shows. Although they had quite popular young faces on the runway, Lemaire also casted old people, short models, there was also a Japanese actor Ryo Kase, playing a commuter on the station. He tried to illustrate random people during their daily commuting on the station.

The collection itself generally had monochrome looks, in different shades of brown, grey and black. Lemaire and Sara also did micro-bags, a lot of layered looks with coats and jackets, high knee boots, A-line skirts, trenches, with minimal makeup and natural hairstyle on models. The whole vibe of the collection was about dressing a traveller, thus having many layers. I personally felt the profes-

sionalism of Lemaire team, as they paid attention to each model, and helped to those, who are having issues. Mr Lemaire and his team made sure everything fits perfectly, they chose really good location - the building and walls were in shades of brown, same as the collection’s color palette.

Diane von Furstenberg showroom, where I was interning for one week, has been held in March during PFW in Diane’s apartment in Paris. Due to the beginning of coronavirus situation in Paris, we had 20 appointments cancelled right on the second day of the showroom. Many appointments have been done online by a video call, with models and a selling director. DVF team closed their showroom in Milan, thus all appointments have been changed to Paris, but we still had quite a relaxed schedule during showroom. We had German, Spanish, French, English and Russian buying teams, which dealt with clients on their language. In terms of collection, although DVF is quite known among professionals in the industry as a fashion brand, in my opinion, it is quite a commercial and a lifestyle brand for mature women. They have interpreted DVF prints in new designs and shapes, but overall image and style remained the same. There were of course many wrap dresses in many colors and prints, as well as famous DVF print. They had pieces from casual style, to evening gowns, however, according to the buyer teams, the most best seller products are still wrap dresses and pieces with DVF print.

Left: Ralph & Russo A/W 2020 - Grand Finale.

Victoria, what were your responsibilities as an intern and what are your overall impressions about your internship experience?

Victoria: I have worked for Ralph & Russo as you know, for Couture and AW20 collections, in the PR department. My responsibilities as an intern was to check in all items coming from London, separate them look by look and naming what influencers would wear it that week and on the day of the show, as well as making a list of influencers and editors who were attending, and also keep track of what is being posted on social media.

Could you tell us more about the show, location, backstage, model casting, was there anything special, that Ralph & Russo did this time?

Victoria: On the day of the show, the or department greets all influencers and editors making them feel welcome. The location was a very famous location in rue Cambon (where one of the most chanel boutique is located)

Tell us more about the collection, what was the inspiration behind? And did you face any issues in the showroom and the show due to COVID-19?

Victoria: They had Mahalia singing live, giving all the cozy mood for A/W season, a lot of brown leaves on the floor, very “fall” like a forest. There was already a lot of talk about covid-19, they had free masks for al the workers, but no one really cared about it that time, however, some people missed the show worried about COVID 19. In the showroom everyone worked normally (no issues regarding covid-19)

Pirrie, could you please share with us which shows you’ve attended and tell us your overall impressions? which show was your favorite?

Pirrie: I attended Reese Cooper, Moohong, and Kimhekim. I was very impressed with all 3. I was so busy this season that I didn’t have time to make my requests for big shows so I only attended smaller ones. My favorite was Reese Cooper.

Please share with us some insight information about the location, backstage and the ambience in the shows you’ve been to, what overall trends did you notice on the runway?

Pirrie: Reese Cooper was my favorite because the location was so gorgeous. It was at the Palais de Tokyo in a huge room. The catwalk was in a square shape around the whole space. The vibe of the whole show was very different because there were no seats so the guests just stood wherever they wanted around the room. There was free champagne and drinks for everyone which also makes it fun. It was a collection inspired by nature so everything was in very earthy tones and patterns. The other two shows were in the Garage de Luebeck which is one of my favorite fashion show venues. Many designers use it because it has a very minimalistic and warehouse vibe.

Could you please tell about the collections, what was the inspiration behind them, was there anything special that these designers did this season?

Pirrie: Kimhekim was amazing this season. The first look that came down the runway was a pair of jeans and nothing on top except for a model holding a heart shaped mirror to her chest. Strappy shoes were layered with leather socks to create a new look. The models had long bangs that covered their eyes which leads to a very mysterious look. Moohong was very focused on tailoring as usual but with a deconstructed twist. There was an incredible trench coat look where the entire thing was worn backwards.

AUTHENTIC BUSINESS FOR A NEW WORLD

The current health crisis is greatly affecting the global business market and economy. Millions of people have been devastatingly laid off or furloughed creating enormous financial pressure. While we can all agree that this is a global pandemic and crisis, business trend forecasters and experts claim that if used correctly this time could contribute to a lot of good. How is it that some businesses have not had to fire anyone at all? How were they prepared? How is business going to change? Will things ever return to “normal”?

Firstly, it will be imperative for organizations and companies to build trust based cultures with their employees as well as their customers. In a time of uncertainty for billions of people, trust is worth its weight in gold. One way of doing this is collaborating with customers. This could be in many forms such as online surveys or polls. This tactic will only be successful if the customer feels that it is an authentic partnership rather than an attempt to boost profit. For example, a company could release a product or service to a few selected customers for free in return for valuable feedback. This makes the customer feel genuinely appreciated and therefore motivated to provide the company with information.

Digitization of products, services, and work will become the new normal. Companies that have been forced to go digital with their teams, will likely embrace the technology and use it in the long term. With time, leaders will learn to manage a working team over platforms such as Zoom without anyone feeling isolated. Benefits of this can be increased productivity and flexibility for the employee. With long term remote work becoming more common, we might see the traditional linear hierarchy of business disappear to make room for more dynamic and collaborative team forms. However, the power of business leaders in this time is enormous. Their decisions are what set apart the successful companies and the failed companies. The good ones will use this time to enhance company culture, as well as the culture that the customer experiences.

Along with remote work, conferences and meetings will become virtual. Many people are starting to realize that it is unnecessary to travel somewhere whether it be by car or plane for work. This way people around the world can still have a meeting at the same time, and potentially increase productivity. It will even become the norm for job interviews to be virtual. Maybe companies are missing out on talent by only hosting in person interviews.

Customer experience is exactly what businesses need to be focusing on during this time. Billions of people are stuck at home craving comfort, connection, and certainty. This leaves the door wide open for companies to reach out to make a lasting impression. With everyone’s inboxes full of the same cash grab emails from businesses, it is going to take a meaningful and human message to stand out these days. While this could sound easy, it becomes a lot more complex once in person contact is taken off of the table. Millennial approved company Glossier is piloting a video service on their website that will provide customers with a free 10 minute consultation about their skincare and makeup routines. Companies will be charged with the question of how to add humanity to their digital platforms and channels.

Trend forecasters have foreseen many concepts that should be interpreted by all kinds of industries. These include comfort, casual, convenience, necessity, clean, radical transparency, made in the USA, and sustainability first. Once this crisis is “over”, consumers will still be cautious. During their time at home they will have prioritized self sufficient practices such as cooking more at home than they ever have. As people start going out and participating in in-person purchasing, they will be looking for companies that put people first and profit second. None of these concepts are entirely new, what is new is the amount of gravity that will be placed on them. Whereas before a consumer might have overlooked the sustainability level of a brand due to a low price, they are less likely to settle for that now. Quality over quantity and people over profit is the mantra.

An example of a company doing all the right things is AirBnb. With extreme restriction on travel, this is a company that was instantly hit very hard by the crisis. With the idea in mind to provide their customers with experiences that they could otherwise not participate in, they made their beloved AirBnb Experiences virtual. Now somebody can pay 5 dollars to sit on their couch and have an immersive experience across the world. This is how to provide your customer with a human experience while still fixing issues declining cash flow. This also supports the hosts of the experiences who would have otherwise been left with no work. They also decided to provide free experiences intended for elderly and at-risk groups of people as a way of incentivising the healthy decision to stay home and engage them while they do so. As travel will be restricted for the conceivable future we will see more and more online tourism. National Parks will release video tours, museums will create virtual tours of exhibits, etc. Another example is bakeries creating DIY bread kits available for delivery or safe pick up as a response to the rise in self-sufficiency. Even high end restaurants are delivering luxury meal kits to your door to reduce the feelings of missing your favorite dish. Gyms have been providing their subscribers with as many as 8 new athome workouts per day to make the customer feel as though they are still getting their money’s worth and staying in shape. Selling intellectual property in general will become more and more common. People will feel inspired to create patreon accounts for their blog posts or sell their art online as we all feel the increased desire to support each other. This kind of innovation is being seen across many industries and will continue to increase as the situation becomes more dire.

Some of the most successful businesses right now include UberEats, DoorDash, and other delivery services. It is expected that after quarantine, consumers’ appetite for these convenience based services will not go away. As in person experiences decrease, consumers are also left with an appetite to learn and experience. Websites like Skillshare and MasterClass will see an uptick in subscriptions as they can provide knowledge and entertainment to bored and brain hungry customers. E-Learning will surge as all schools will be forced to re-arrange classrooms and schedules to accommodate social distancing rules. Healthcare will become more and more digital as doctors and pharmacists are able to facilitate online video appointments and online prescriptions.

One of the industries that will be the most affected is fashion. It is only beginning to see how intensely it will be impacted. With all retail stores closed and many production facilities shut down, things have been put to a halt. The industry is forecasted to see a 30% reduction in revenue this year, and 80% of brands are likely to experience distress. While this all may sound quite negative, this crisis is shedding light on many of the existing problems with the industry that were previously ignored. When China shut down, it left many brands with a shut down supply chain questioning if perhaps they should have a more centralized business plan. Fashion Week as we know it, has started to seem more and more irresponsible financially and ecologically. People fly from all over the world to see a show that costs millions of dollars to produce and immediately take out their phones to document the whole thing. As most fashion weeks around the world have already been cancelled for the next year, this raises the question of what it will become in the future. Does it make more sense for people to tune in to live fashion shows on their computer? Will showrooms become virtual?

With a massive rise in online traffic during quarantine, one might expect to find a rise in online sales as well. However, the conversion rate of browser to shopper has been extremely low. Why is this? What are the brands doing wrong? Perhaps the question is what are they not doing. There is an obvious gap that fashion brands must tap into to regain customers. By demonstrating human values and creating innovative concepts, they could catch their attention. One example could be offering special experiences and content to the top 10% of a customer base. This would be human in contrast to receiving an automated email for 20% off of your next purchase.

The fashion world (as well as other industries), is likely to go through what could be called a Darwinian shakeout. This means that those with bad values at their roots and purely capitalistic choices will eventually be pruned away during this crisis. Many of these companies are owned and protected by large conglomerates, but as sustainability and transparency become required they will not pass the test in the consumers’ mind. Equally, the companies with the best values and reactions will rise to the top and be noticed by all. This could provide an opportunity for less known brands to be seen. For an industry as saturated as fashion and apparel, this may be ideal.

Brands with creative thinking such as Jacquemus have continued to stay relevant by producing new content during quarantine. The FaceTime photoshoot is a concept that has originated during this time. A model is sent a shipment of clothes, puts them on, and facetimes with a world renowned photographer. This not only is a creative way to promote the clothes, but results in more relatable content for the customer who can much more easily imagine themself wearing the clothes at home rather than in a staged photo shoot environment that is typically depicted. Jacquemus has also engaged it’s customers and followers to participate in an Instagram challenge in which you create a shoe out of household items and post a picture. This is an example of customer experience that offers no monetary gain to a company but is converted into trust and appreciation for the brand that will eventually become sales. Helmut Lang has launched an online design challenge. Artists from around the world are submitting designs to their team and ultimately 3 of them will be chosen and printed on shirts available on their website. The incentive for the artists is a giftcard to the store (which costs them virtually nothing) as well as highly sought after exposure. When a customer sees tangible evidence of a brand listening to customers, this will convert to sales. Gucci released an app that features never before seen editorials/videos, entertaining video games, and a virtual tryon feature that can link the customer directly to a purchase. This is an attempt to provide entertainment as well as a feeling of belonging to the tribe that is Gucci. People will feel more convinced to purchase the glasses they try on virtually because they have been exposed to the culture of Gucci. Brands willing to push the boundaries and thrive during this hard time will succeed. It is possible that this crisis is what the fashion world (and business world in general) needed to finally fix what has ailed it for years.

While it can not be ignored that this is an incredibly hard time of transition for billions of people in the working world, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the potential positives of the situation. This crisis will provide income outlets that many had never thought of. All companies from big to small will be forced to look internally and analyze themselves. Do they foster trust from their employees and customers? How do they do so? What systems do they have in place to survive unexpected situations? These are important questions as we all prepare to navigate the “new normal” that we cannot predict

COLLEGE FASHION THROUGH THE AGES

College fashion has always represented the current events of the world because young people are so impressionable and in search of inspiration from the world around them. Let’s take a tour!

1900 - Women wore tea gowns and men wore single breasted suits. The trend at the time was very Edwardian

1910 - Still Edwardian. Women wore tea hats and long flowy skirt suits. Men wore single breasted suits

1920 - After WWI fashion became more accessible. The “flapper look” is born with excessive embellishment and drop waists. Men wore suits with round lapels and flowy trousers.

1930 - During this time families did not have a lot of money due to the great depression. Clothes were made out of reused materials. Women wore dresses right above the knee with matching sweaters and men wore a hyper masculine of slacks, button up, and a sweater on top.

1940 - With the first half of this decade being defined by war and a new female working class, a much more androgynous style was born. Women wore A-line pleated skirts and peter pan collar tops. Men started dressing more maturely due to the adult nature of having been drafted for the war.

1950 - This iconic school style was later copied in the film Grease. Women wore large skirts sometimes adorned with poodles, and a tight sweater/ top. Men either dressed very preppily, or dressed a a bad boy with leather jackets and greased hair.

1960 - The decade of Mod. As bands like the Beatles were flooding the music scene, young adults were being incredibly influenced by their fashion. For women the mini skirt was born and

for men popular items were chelsea boots and polo shirts. There were of course other subgroups such as beatniks, rockers, and hippies.

1970 - Heavily inspired by the hippie movement. Denim and flared pants were incredibly popular. Belted waistlines became a unisex trend. Tie-dye and floral patterns become very commonly worn.

1980 - Bold colors, bold silhouettes, and bold patterns. Oh, and acid wash jeans of course. Slogan tees from iconic brands emerge. Shoulder padded blazers become the standard school look. Men wore a lot of denim and graphic tops.

1990 - Hip Hop, Skater, and Raver cultures were the main influence on fashion in this decade. Men wore large baggy jeans and oversized flannels to appear grunge. Women wore babydoll dresses or slip dresses with edgy details like jewelry, makeup, and very very chunky shoes.

2000 - Early 2000s fashion is hard to define. The main element was extremely revealing low rise pants with a cropped top. The exposed midriff becomes incredibly popular. Small bags, blingy jewelry, and kitten heels. Men wear baggy pants and tops with dark sunglasses, spiky hair, and dad sneakers.

2010 - The first to grow up with internet and social media. Boho inspiration is very present. Symbols such as infinity, peace, and love become very popular. Ugg boots are seemingly worn by everyone despite the current season.

2020 - School is forced to go online due to a worldwide pandemic. For the first time students are taking their classes from their laptops in their beds. The daily school look becomes a variation of pajamas, sweatpants, and slippers.

EXHIBITION REVIEW: GUCCI

Shops closed, businesses closed and not being able to go see a movie or visit your favorite museum in this quarantine is just one of the many things that are not possible. But, thanks to technology, there these days are many ways to still do your favorite activity online. From online shopping, to watching that specific movie you wanted to watch on Netflix. And yes, many museum sites and exhibitions do offer a 360-experience on their website.

Today, we are going to explore an exhibition that the Gucci app offers. The Daelim Museum in Seoul, North Korea offers a unique invitation to their abstract exposition called “No Space, Just A Place.” The app describes it as an “abstract form of the space as a simple geographical location, into a place, an embodied form activated by human experience.” The exhibition will be full of large-scale artwork of 10 independent art spaces from Seoul, combined with five artworks from Korean and international artists. The tour comes with audio-supported preferences so without further ado, let’s jump right into it.

When first entering the museum, I ended up in the hallway where there is an opportunity to take a booklet dividing each room and describing what is found in each one. On the left-hand wall there is a description of what the exposition will be about. To just sum it up: it takes its cue from the Korean artistic ecosystem to initiate a reflection on our times and the deep mutations that humanity is experiencing. With options to go straight forward or turn right, I choose straight forward where I ended up in

a sort of laundromat with quite the unusual washing clothes: mermaid tales. This instalment, created by Olivia Erlanger, gives us the question if the mermaids are jumping in the washing machine or coming out? The philosophy, according to the man voice giving me the audio tour, is that a laundromat is a place where people dream of owning a space with room for your own washing machine and dryer. Also, according to the artist are the mermaids we see pre-gendered (and not the common association we make that they are female).

The next installation starts in the staircase and brings up upstairs, to work from Kang Seung Lee. What I see at first impression is a lot off A4-format black and white posters with some just words and others with pictures of drawings. After listening to the audio, I learned that these are all files exploring histories of sexual minorities in Korea, all from private and public archives. His work is made out of around 1500 archived books, mainly known as Queer Arch. His main focus point of choosing this topic is to bring light to over 40 years of alienated sexual minority, covered up for society.

After Lee’s installation, the audio guide tells me there will be an installation reaching to the third floor from 10 alternative and independent artists from Seoul, designed in collaboration with the museum’s curators. Before listening further, I explored a little bit myself to give my own impression.

The objects I see around the first room are mainly just random places attributes. From a very old TV to a sand covered table with on top to what looks like several models of large, apartment buildings. The man tells me that this specific installation shows a different way of how the spaces work together, while respecting their mutual differences. We first deep into White Noise. The works are made up by four teams and museum’s curators who previously have worked with this space. One of the interesting things

to mention about this corner of the room is the vertical plasma screen places on the floor, which is a very common thing that its artist does. The corner combines sounds, videos and photo records from social media accounts into the exhibition’s space.

Next the guide shows me to a sort of passageway between two main rooms which now places me in a very dark grey painted room, which is a big contrast to the overall white painted walls in the other rooms. The only thing I see here is a corner with headset and an in-framed photograph of what appears to be an astronaut landing on some outer-space planet with several unexplainable features in the background. I am told that this petite space is a cultural one which the artists want to tell, through the headset, that land on the moon is actually bought and sold. The explanation of the photograph needs to make sure that what I see in front of me is a future way of seeing and living on the moon since pieces of ground on the moon are sold to people but are for now unreachable.

The next room just showcases four walls with huge letters covering the walls, not forming a word and a plasma screen in the middle of the room. The artist, Martine Syms, here uses videos and imagery to showcase blackness. This specific artist already, with this specific installation, showcased itself in MoMa New York.

When moving on to the next one, I see various beautiful paintings that showcases that various possibilities of paintings as a medium. The work is painted onto old paper and are torn and scattered all over the room.

This wants to reconsider our attitudes towards paintings, which also is the oldest medium in the world of art, and to thing from more various angles we see and experience paintings. With taking a break from all paintings, framed photographs etc. I end up in a small room with huge screen to broadcast me a video. The video shows a person doing tongue gymnastics. I must be honest with you here, this vid-

eo did give me the chills and scared me out.

The room is called “d/p” and is an abbreviation of “dicrete paradise”. The gymnastics are done by choreographer and dancer Yung Jon Lee. The video tells a story of the body as an internal place, where meaning and function co-exist and from which we can never be separated. The last room I found worth to mention is called space illi, all done by female artists of different generations. They all share the same concerns about the nature of contemporary visual arts and put-on exhibitions. Their installation is made of tv-screens all showcasing dozens of different stories of different novels.

And with this last room mentioned, my visit to this exhibition was over. My overall opinion about this was that every single room, corner of installation was so different and interesting that I was eager to dive into it immediately. A major positive note with this one is the providence of an audio-guide in as well English as Korean which gave me such a better understanding on what I was viewing. I do think it is possible to visit this one without a person telling you the explanations and completely let your imagination decide that. Now, I did not cover every single room possible so I would make you also eager to go and visit this online exhibition. “No Space, Just A Place” is running from April 17th till July 12th 2020 on the Gucci app.

RONA'S SUPERSTAR

You probably open your Instagram every time and there it is, one of your favorite influencers has yet again posted another outfit look, workout routine or a picture of herself laying on the beach. Influencers have been a very big part of the social media era that we now live in and can make big earnings from working with specific brands or advertising products. But what if a global pandemic restricted travel blogger’s, gym gurus and several other going-out types to post their perfect pictures on the gram? Well, 2020 put this precise question in action with COVID-19.

With limitless outdoor activities and actions to post pictures of you going to the gym, laying on a white sand beach in Tulum or visit your favorite luxury store people have to be creative to keep their followers satisfied with what they see on their feed from their favorite person on Instagram. Without all the various variants of influencers there already are too many of, this pandemic created an opportunity for people to entertain the internet world with being themselves, do something funny or interact a little bit more with who follows them. A new type of influencers has reached the attention level of the daily user of social media platforms. People, like me and you, with or without any previous fame that adjusted this situation to their own persona being on everybody’s feed. Listed down are 10 people we loved to follow and see appear when we scrolled hours and hours down our feed while being quarantined.

1. Back in fall of 2019, Seth Philips (the guy holding the cardboards) and Elliot Tebele had the simple idea of hitting the streets of NYC with a cardboard in their hand saying: “Stop replying- all to company-wide emails.” After posting it on Instagram and having a decent amount of likes and shares, they decided to take it a step further and uploaded a picture of Seth holding another cardboard in front of a Friends billboard saying: “Seinfield is way better than Friends”. In addition to this specific post, a large following began to develop for the account. Now, eight months after the creation of the account, it has gained over 7.000.000 followers on Instagram. Their tagline is “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” Since

Seth Phillips

then they all the time release statement-pictures relating to popular trends on social media, the wildfires that occurred in Australia last January, thoughts everyone has (ex. “Your meal doesn’t need a photoshoot”) and of course the 2020 pandemic. As a reaction to this, the account shared pictures of Seth holding cardboards saying for example: “We’re in this together”, “Thank you doctors, nurses and medical staff” and “Ok Covid, wrap it up” with likes per post easily surpassing 1.000.000.

2. @thelesliejordan When you hear the name Leslie Jordan, you may recall him from playing Beverly Leslie in Will & Grace and may have spotted him a few times when watching the different seasons of American Horror Story. But the majority of people now, will probably know this man from his Instagram account. His very easy providence of entertainment is something that will cheer you up and make you laugh instantly. While being self-quarantined, people are most likely to get bored very easily. This too was the case for Leslie and instead of watching another tv-show on Netflix or had another hour-long videocall with one of his friends, he decided to share his struggles and thoughts while being isolated from the world with his, back in the beginning, small scaled following. His videos quickly gained a lot of attention and to name just a few of the subjects; forgetting what month it was, using a large pillow as a an accessory and pretend you are Sia,... It is safe to say that Leslie has become the COVID-19 quarantine sensation, with many of his now over 4.000.000 Instagram followers calling him the “King of quarantine”.

3. @chloe_t If we speak about Chloe Ting, we speak about the fitness and body workout queen herself. Chloe Ting, who is in her mid-thirties, has gained a very large following over the past weeks not only on Instagram but also on her YouTube channel. Besides this she has a very popular hashtag on social media platform TikTok called #chloetingchallenge with over 120.000.000 videos using it. The reason why Chloe is considered this status is because when you watch her doing her workouts, she makes it look effortless and very easy. This is a very persuasive matter of fact that will engage more people to work out because the most frustrating part about fitness and other intensive activities is the effort, sweat, pain and soreness. Before confinement and people were still able to go to the gym or just didn’t have time to sport, Chloe’s YouTube-channel had just over 200.000 followers. At the end of April, her subscribers count is now over 2.500.000 with a weekly average of 660.000 new followers. This high number of subscribers also shows in views of her videos that easily get over the 1.000.000 per video. Her most viewed videos are the 10-minute work outs that everybody can do. On her Instagram page, with now over 1.000.000 followers, she posts her body regularly motivating us that we can do more, with sometimes just a selfie or a regular photo everyone could post on their page. After watching her so effortlessly working out, I put myself to the test with trying out three of her most viewed 10-minute work outs. With two work outs done, and the not so inshape condition I have, the third work out seemed too much to bear but I thought: if Chloe can do it, so can I. The difference between her and I is that she does this probably multiple times a day, which to me was a first try and rapidly left me out of breath but worth the try.

Corona Virus Changing Life’s Values

The pandemic that changed the world forever, the shock of the century. Everyones talking about it, asking, wondering, and guessing all worried about what the hell is going on! For most people they have never seen anything like this in their lifetime, a world wide lock down. There are people dying, sick and becoming infected with the corona virus. With numbers of cases doubling over night and showing no signs of stopping, it’s no doubt that people are panicking. They have reason to panic, anything involving the health of our people is very concerning and should be taken seriously. According to worldometer, the total cases world wide is up to 3 million so far and still increasing everyday. With lives on the line everyday it is crucial that everyone limits their social contact as much as possible. This creating the world wide lock down. Almost every country with enough cases of the virus is on some version of a quarantine. Traveling is off limits in most places and everyone is ordered to STAY HOME. We are staying home all day long, not going out to do all the things we used to normally do and only going out for necessary activities.

Generally speaking I think from what I’ve seen throughout social media and just my

personal assumption, I think we can all agree this virus is a bit of a pain in the ass. Even if we are not sick ourselves or nobody close to us is affected, most people have come at this pandemic with a common annoyance.

Maybe it conflicted with your spring break trip, or your graduation, or even your wedding plans. Whatever it is that you had planned to do during this time, probably got disrupted and its frustrating! Before you start creating your “i need a haircut” sign and start rioting in the streets, start to take a look at the silver lining that the corona virus has had on the world.

In this article I’m going to touch on all the benefits and positives that have some from the world wide pandemic. There has been reports on all the silver linings in all sorts of factors such as the economy, the environment, the worlds values, and everyones physiological state. In this article we are going to dive into some of the positive factors that have come out of this corona virus madness.

Economy + Environment

As many of us already know the outbreak has led to a huge economic crash with businesses and industries suffering now more than ever. As time is money, the more and more days that pass in quarantine, the more money businesses are losing out on. The businesses that provide a physical service are suffering the most right now as these are probably going to be the last to open as they are putting their customers at high risk of obtaining the virus. Big corporations that have products produced in other parts of the world, such as china, are also suffering as many of them are having a hard time getting their products to their customers as transportation is very limited during this time. To put it shortly the less everyone is consuming the less money everyone is making, and a lot of people aren’t happy about this considering that making lots of money is very much valued in todays society. The more money you are making, the more productive you must be and the more productive you are, the more that makes you a valuable person. Right? These are the values the western world thrives on to try and produce the most productive people possible because as an end result they will produce more money.

As a result of these western values many business owners today are going through many physiological troubles such as depression, anxiety and stress due to the lack of feeling valued in their society. As most people are prone to do, they are looking at the negatives of this economic travesty as it is very easy to do so. Lots of business owners are feeling like throwing up their hands in the air, losing all hope for what could have been a great year to grow, expand, and overall make money for their business. As I can see how this would be very frustrating and a bit of a challenge to overcome, this is a time for big changes to be made by businesses.

Industries that have their production based in other countries far from them, are currently rethinking if moving their production closer to either their own country or a near by country would be a smart move for them in the long run.

Not only would this be a good move for another potential pandemic in the future, but this would also help with saving the environment from the impact of transportation.

This would also help to give jobs and money to those in your country (or neighboring country) and grow your own economy more. Now take for example your business supply chain wasn’t broken and you can still send products to you customers. The trouble many of these businesses are seeing right now is a lack of consumption from their normal consumers. This is where we are seeing a shift in values for many people as we are starting to question if we really need to be spending, buying, and consuming as much as we used to, in order to feel whole and good. Thus, causing such a positive impact on the environment at the moment as factories are closed, transportation limited as well as consumption. Li Edelkoort has done an interview for Dezeen magazine and calls this “A quarantine of consumption” even. She also talks about how the coronavirus offers us “a blank page for a new beginning” and I believe this to be absolutely true. With industries rethinking their business plans keeping the environment in mind and their overall views on well being, productivity and money, the outcome will be interesting to see of what will become of the new values of the economy and the environment.

Physiological Values + World Values

We are in the midst of seeing how citizens and world leaders are responding to the crisis that is the coronavirus. Will our new behaviors, customs, and traditions start to change the world forever? Though these already vary from culture to culture, will there be a new way to go about living our everyday life’s? How will our morals and values change? From the research I’ve done about the behavioral changes I can predict there will be many changes in society about the value of life.

The conversation of societies morals and values is an interesting one. Now today as a form of politeness, in public it is very normal to move away from people as if they smell like they haven’t showered in weeks. Not to be rude of course, it’s simply a way of showing that you respect their space as they should yours. These small gestures are very quickly becoming a part of the new “normal”. Is this way of giving someone space and overall being isolated going to be a literal example of how life after the crisis will be? Will we have to get used to socially distancing ourselves and spending more time with ourselves? Will this make us realize the time we do get to spend with someone else is so valuable and not to be taken for granted. For many people already there have been reports of people finding new hobbies, building deeper connections with loved ones, and overall just doing the things people never found the time for in the past while in quarantine.

Are we coming to terms to what and who is really important? Perhaps there are some workaholics realizing that a strong relationship with their kids is more important than their already high paying job. Maybe someone is coming to terms with who they really are because they’re alone during quarantine and have now had the time to get to know themself. Or maybe theres someone finding out how to turn their hobby into a career. Whatever it is, if you had a good attitude and positivity, the quarantine could have just put you years ahead of where you already were at because you finally had the time.

Another behavioral shift I have seen become more and more important during this time is a sense of gratitude and selflessness. Reports of clapping at the window at a certain hour has been a way of showing our appreciation for the medical workers who have had the hardest time trying to save as many life’s as possible. It also gives a sense of community for those stuck at home, and is nice to see their neighbors home and going through the same thing you are. A feeling of “we are in this together” wether it be though social media or just in your apartment building, has taken the world by storm as a positive light at the end of this dark tunnel. Not

only are we recognizing how important medical care is but also those who are working jobs to help keep the world running as somewhat normal. It’s the grocery store workers risking coming to work everyday to provide food for their community. It’s the garbage truck driver making sure our cities don’t overflow with trash in the streets. It’s the people that don’t have the luxury to sleep in all day or teach themselves a second language during this time we need to be especially grateful for in this time. Without them our lives would be that much more complicated and almost impossible to live without. As good citizens we just need to do our job of washing our hands, using gloves and masks (that are strangely not provided to us by our government) to protect ourselves and limit contact with others as much as possible so that we don’t put these essential workers in danger.

All in all with behavioral changes already being made it’s safe to say there will be many moral changes in our everyday society about how we treat others and how we treat ourselves. The least of what this lockdown has taught us, is it not anything for granted, to become innovative and to think beyond yourself.

To Wrap It Up

With a hard topic full of unknown futures and big questions of how the world is going to recover after this, it’s a bit challenging to know for sure how society will develop again and recover from such a pandemic. There are many guesses and predictions but with the worlds actions being not in our hands, but our world leader’s, it’s hard to say if we will be wise in the end or go back to our same way because we fear change. The harsh reality though is that we need to change something huge that will be the most beneficial to the heath and well being of the world citizens and our planet. Would a 2 month productions pause every year going forward be proactive in order to save our planet? Would less working hours at the office be right for humanity to give people enough time to develop a life, hobbies, and deeper relationships with people outside of their career path? These are all valid questions we need to be asking. After all, we are talking about the future of our life’s and our planet, and when we have the thought of money in mind, it can stray us away from what is most essential to live in a healthy and happy way.

Undoubtably it’s going to be scary and exciting to finally see what our world leaders decide as what is the best way to carry on and proceed forward as a society. We wont forget this monumental change in our history and hopefully a new revelation will come soon with a new wave of ideas will come based on new values such as selflessness, determination, and courage.
