The school gates have closed for the summer so now it’s time to have some fun – and what better way than to enrol in a dance summer school and spend your time exploring new ideas and challenges.

It’s not always easy choosing which summer school you want to attend, but according to The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) whatever your dance experience, there is something to inspire everyone.

A time to learn Making dance accessible can be an issue, especially with ticket prices on the increase. But does The Royal Ballet have the answer with live screenings to 300 cinemas across the world – we ask if this is the way forward.

A study in choreography

We look at a selection of summer schools which are on offer.

While many people think that summer schools are just for dancers, that certainly isn’t the case. Here we explore the Summer University at Sadler’s Wells which is open to aspiring choreographers.

Contents Editor’s Note So did you go to Move It? If you were lucky enough to get a ticket to attend then you will know what I am talking about when I say that it was truly fantastic.

Having been at the show for the full three days the team at Dance Review were totally exhausted by the end of the day on the Sunday but what a great time we had. As well as all of the classes and events on the stages there was so much to see on the numerous stands…and so much to buy. Not that I actually had much time to do any shopping because we were so busy welcoming people onto our stand – it was great to finally get to meet some of you and hear how much you like the magazine. I’m also delighted to be able to welcome the hundreds of new readers to the magazine who subscribed at Move It – I really hope you enjoy reading it. And so to this month’s issue. Over the last few weeks I have started to feel a touch of spring in the air and before we know it we will be in the height of summer - which brings me onto the subject of summer schools. I know it’s only April but it really is time to start planning what you want to do over the summer – if only because places fill up fast so it’s important to get in there before it’s too late. This months Dance Review is therefore dedicated to summer schools and we have a vast amount of information for you. From top tips about how to get the most out of attending a summer school, to information about which summer schools you can attend, we have it all here this month. When I was putting this together I was getting quite excited because there are some great opportunities out there and whether you have a preference for street dance or ballet there is something for everyone. So turn to page 11 now and start planning because there is no time like the present. See you next month

Join the dance craze By Stacey Swannell and Charlotte Norris, Event Managers, Haven Specialist Sales Department

Following the success of groups like Diversity and Flawless, the film Street Dance and even TV’s Strictly Come Dancing, we’ve noticed there has been a big upsurge of interest in dance. More recently, the Freestyle competitions have become very popular, but street dance, hip-hop and salsa are also on the rise. It’s great to see so much interest, and the range of groups is wider than ever – from cheerleading and majorettes through to ballet, tap and Scottish country dancing. We like to think the number of events on Haven holiday parks may have contributed to the growing popularity of dance. Last summer it was lovely to hear of a dance group who put on a special performance for holidaymakers, creating a great deal of interest in their style of dance. This continued when some of the children joined in with our Kids’ Clubs and taught the moves to other youngsters. One of the many aspects of the holiday park environment

which organisers love is the fact that everyone is staying in the same place and they don’t have to worry about organising transport to get participants to the dance venue. And it means that they can get involved in other activities on the park. At Haven, we book between 80 and 100 dance events every year and they can vary from a club event for 30 participants up to a major festival that would take over a complete holiday park with more than 3,000 competitors. But it isn’t just about dance events because we also cater for non-dancing partners with a wide range of other facilities on offer such as heated indoor and outdoor leisure pools, tennis and multi-sports courts, golf, fishing, climbing walls, boating lakes, bike-hire and even a spa at some parks! All of which help to create a truly memorable event for everyone. For more information click on www.havengroups.co.uk/ dance or call 0871 230 1911 and quote Dance Review.

History in art form The latest exhibition at Sadler’s Wells is a depiction of the historical ballet Lilac Garden (Rehearsal) by artist Silke Otto-Knapp. The work is produced as a series of etchings which mark a departure from her painting practice and will be on show until 24 April. Created by Marie Rambert’s young choreographer, Antony Tudor, Lilac Garden was first performed by Ballet Rambert at Sadler’s Wells in April 1936. Tudor’s Victorian tragedy centres on a marriage of convenience - staged amidst a moonlit English Garden full of lilacs. A party is held on the eve of an arranged wedding where the young couple to-be is thwarted in their attempts to find their mutual lovers who are also guests that night. Frustrated by these

last stolen moments and resigned to their fate, the couple finally walk away from true love. Although inspired by this romantic setting, Otto-Knapp does not seek to reinterpret the emotional narrative directly in her work but selects a few documented scenes from the original 1930’s performance. Installed in a frieze or storyboard configuration, certain sequences are repeated as if in a suspended sense of movement or animation. Through this process, Otto-Knapp manipulates subtle tonal shifts, muted colour modulation and layered markings that differentiate each print. This gives the reason for the title - Lilac

you dream of dancing on stage at Sadler’s Wells then it’s time

to start rehearsing and take the first steps towards turning your dream into a reality with the Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest.

T

he web-based competition which uses YouTube to host the original dance video entries is now open at: www. globaldancecontest.com. Seeking the next generation of dance talent, the winner will receive a cash prize and perform on the main stage at Sadler’s Wells Sampled, the theatre’s acclaimed dance taster weekend which features international stars and takes place annually in January. The contest builds up to a final showcase of each year’s winners in 2012. Arlene Phillips says: “The Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest is a fantastic initiative, open to the widest possible range of dancers and choreographers, and to have the chance to perform on the world’s most famous dance stage is an opportunity not to be missed!”

Online performance The first year of the contest in 2009 attracted 170 applicants from 34 different countries. In 2010 this had increased to 362 original dance entries with applicants from as far as Nigeria, Venezuela, China and Australia using the online platform

James Wilton’s piece The Shortest Day won last year’s contest to perform to an audience of dance enthusiasts from around the world. The 2009 winner, 26 year old Taiwanese choreographer Shu-Yi Chou, travelled to London with 12 dancers to present (1875) Ravel and Bolero at Sadler’s Wells Sampled in January 2010. The 2010 winner, 23 year old British choreographer James Wilton, beat competitors from 30 countries to present his work at Sadler’s Wells Sampled with a piece entitled The Shortest Day - an original contemporary work for four dancers, set to music by Mastodon.

The contest The Sadler’s Wells online Global Dance Contest is in two stages and invites people over the age of 18 to enter. For the first stage entrants must create and capture on video their own original piece of dance which can be anything from 30 seconds to five minutes in length, to upload onto the contest website via YouTube. The entries, which can be any kind of dance style, must be submitted by Tuesday 30 June. The videos will then be judged by a panel of leading figures from across the arts chaired by Sadler’s Wells’ Chief Executive and Artistic Director Alistair Spalding. The

Judges will shortlist 10 entries which will be announced at noon on Friday 15 July. In the second stage of the contest the public can vote for their favourite entry. Public voting opens at 10am on Monday 8 August and runs until 6pm on Wednesday 2 November. The winner will be announced on Monday 7 November. Sadler’s Wells Artistic Director Alistair Spalding said: “Last year’s competition saw a surge of interest with hundreds of entries from all over the world. The range of work was quite incredible and proves that the Global Dance Contest has built on the success of the inaugural 2009 competition. It’s clear that dance is engaging a massive cross section of people from around the world, and the level of talent and ability out there is huge. I’m very much looking forward to seeing this year’s entries and welcoming the winner to Sadler’s Wells in 2012.” The winner will receive £2000 and will perform alongside leading artists from the international dance scene at Sadler’s Wells Sampled where they will receive support and guidance from the theatre to help them ensure their work looks great on stage. At the end of the four year project in 2012, the collective winners will perform their work in London, during the Olympic year.

this season. Aside from Tap Olé, the season features the fantastical family-friendly Nats Nus Dansa (Sat 4 June, Lilian Baylis Studio) and the dynamic surrealism of Sol Picó Dance Company (Thu 23 and Fri 24 June, Sadler’s Wells).

My Big Pants If you’re looking for something a little different then check out EDge, the postgraduate performance company of London Contemporary Dance School, which has announced details of its annual spring tour, from 7 April to 16 July 2011, across 21 national and international venues. Tap Olé It’s definitely starting to feel more like spring and as well as making the most of the longer evenings, there are plenty of new performances on offer to help you really enjoy the weeks ahead. Following two sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, award-winning Catalan company Tap Olé make their London debut at the Peacock Theatre with their latest production, Tapeando, a virtuoso mix of tap, Spanish guitar and percussion.

The company’s 12 dancers will present a programme of works by some of the most exciting choreographers currently working in the UK and Europe. The tour showcases four original pieces of choreography ranging from the complexity of Martin Forsberg’s BRAID to the playful game-dance of 36, by Jorge Crecis. P&J and Running up the down escalator, both new works from Place Prize finalists Eva Recacha and Ben Duke respectively, and a revival of Jeremy James’

Featuring a seamless combination of four tap dancers and four musicians, Tap Olé explores the choreographic possibilities of fusing tap dance with a variety of Latin, flamenco, jazz and Mediterranean rhythms. Tapeando premiered in Barcelona before touring internationally in 2010, Tap Oléhas also performed in New York, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, Croatia, Italy, Panama as well as the International Feet Beat Tap Festival in Helsinki in 2006. Tap Olé first performed at the Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s programme RITMO, at the Vittum Theatre on 16 May 2003 to excellent reviews. Since then, the company has won the Audience Award at the International Valladolid Festival in Spain (2004) and in 2010 the company’s choreographer and dancer Guillem Alonso was given the Dansacat award in recognition of his contribution to the dance world. Lead dancers Guillem Alonso and Roser Font have performed together across Europe and USA with various international companies including Barcelona Rhythm Tap and American Tap Dance Orchestra. They both also featured as soloists in the production Fire of Dance. Tap Olé takes place on 3-7 May and is the first of Sadler’s Wells’ Catalan Dance Trilogy, a series of works across three stages focused on multi-award winning Catalan Dance

signature work, My Big Pants, complete the programme. EDge has established a reputation for presenting engaging and diverse works performed by young professional dance artists at key stages of their careers. The EDge spring tour represents the culmination of the year-long course, which offers post-graduate performers the chance to work together as an ensemble across different styles of contemporary dance. The period spent with EDge forms the main part of their Postgraduate Diploma in Performance at London Contemporary Dance School, and gives them an invaluable insight into working with choreographers, rehearsing and touring as a professional company. The tour takes EDge performers across the UK and Europe.

spell-binding, double-bill of bold and beautiful dance from six superbly talented young professional dancers. We’ve all heard of Mozart, but imagine what was going through the young genius’ head when he was writing this ravishing music that our dancers use to perform with. Up Close and Personal from Roy Campbell-Moore does just that, getting Up Close inside Mozart’s music and Personal with the dancers in passionate moments of deep intimacy magnified through a vibrant cyclorama of close up photography. An emotionally driven and highly charged production, Embark takes the audience on a moving and unforgettable journey through a resurrected past, as the dancers fly, swoop and dive in a furious flood of dance. Created by Welsh choreographer, Phil Williams, the dance is set to a haunting original score by the composer, Benjamin Talbot. This is a captivating and totally engaging evening of dance to enjoy and will be touring Wales throughout April.

A diverse repertory He final performance on my ‘must see’ list this month is from Birmingham Royal Ballet which continues with its policy of presenting its diverse repertory to the widest possible audience into 2011. From 19-23 April, the Company will once again split into two, with half of the Company and Royal Ballet Sinfonia travelling to the south-west of the country and the remaining half travelling to the north-east. The split-tour initiative, now in its eighth year, enables the Company to present full-scale works, with orchestral accompaniment, in mid-scale venues not normally associated with a Company of this size. The split tour will see the Company perform in Yeovil and Truro in the southwest and Durham and York in the north-east. The works to be performed have been carefully chosen to demonstrate the versatility of Birmingham Royal Ballet, a company now firmly recognised as a major international force in the world of classical dance. The south-west spring tour programme presents Allegri diversi, choreographed by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s award-winning Director, David Bintley, alongside excerpts from some of the world famous classical ballets with which Birmingham Royal Ballet has made its name.

The north-east spring tour programme presents Slaughter on Tenth Avenue from one of the great 20th-century choreographers, George Balanchine, Act II from Peter Wright’s production of Coppélia and excerpts from the company’s rich and varied classical repertory. 10 DanceReview | April2011

The choice is yours The school gates have closed for the summer so now it’s time to have some fun – and what better way than to enrol in a dance summer school and spend your time exploring new ideas and challenges.

I

f you haven’t attended a summer school before then you don’t know what you are missing because it is a fantastic opportunity to keep yourself challenged and stimulated over the summer – particularly if your regular dance classes are on hold for the holiday period. In fact research shows that if you do attend a summer school, as well as learning new skills you are more likely to hold onto the ones which you have gained throughout the previous year.

Keep the focus If, like me, you are constantly trying to pack

Photo by John Frith, courtesy of ISTD

too much into a day such as attending school/college/work and cramming dance classes in at the end of the day and at the weekend then you could be forgiven if a few steps and routines sometimes evade you. And that is one of the benefits of attending a summer school because it allows you to focus your mind solely on dance and perhaps learn and refine new techniques which you so far haven’t managed to perfect due to lack of time. Of course this leads on to one of the greatest benefits, which is the opportunity to overcome a particular challenge. People will attend a summer school for many reasons, but a fair few choose to attend in order to learn something completely new. By giving

yourself the time and space to explore new ideas and new types of dance there is less of a sense of urgency and pressure. It also gives your brain time to relax and be creative – something which you probably seldom have time to do.

Meeting people For me one of the best parts of attending a summer school is the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. On a day to day basis you will be constantly mixing with the same people and while it’s great to have a good set of friends it’s also good to meet new people and perhaps explore new cultures. Ultimately many people who attend summer schools do end up staying in touch, but even if that doesn’t happen you will certainly discover new things about yourself which will help you in the future.

Enjoy yourself If you were only to listen to one piece of advice about summer schools I would say…..enjoy. At the end of the day you are spending a week or maybe two doing something that you love in an environment with people who share the same love for dance.

Photo by John Frith, courtesy of ISTD

There are plenty of options to choose from so now the difficult part begins – do you learn something new or improve your skills in a form of dance that you are familiar with – the choice is yours.

ach year The Royal Academy of Dance runs summer schools in London, as well as at various locations across the UK and abroad and for those of you who haven’t attended one before, be assured that it isn’t all work, work, work. The summer schools are all about having fun, collaboration and discovering different styles of dance whilst making new friends.

Jill Firth LRAD AISTD says: “Having taught on RAD Summer Schools worldwide what strikes me most is how much fun students can have while acquiring new skills. The schools are always a hive of activity, with the vitality of youth, energetic and vibrant, enthusiastic and buzzing, and learning. The students spend an incredibly busy day but still seem to have extra energy for the evening activities which are special to each location.”

New challenges If one of the things which you are looking for this summer is a new challenge then this is the perfect opportunity as participants take on challenges in a range of dance disciplines, with classes taught by an expert team of qualified teachers. One student who attended the London summer school in 2010 said: “Coming from Spain, it was interesting to see other teaching methods and it was challenging to learn new steps such as pirouettes. I really enjoyed meeting girls from other countries and I am definitely looking forward to coming back”. RAD summer schools are open to students aged 7 – 18 years who are studying RAD Grade 2 ballet or the equivalent and above while the London summer schools are open to students aged 8 – 18 years due to longer days. There is also a two week

By Paddy Hurlings, Chair of the ISTD Imperial Dance & Theatre Faculties Board and ISTD Examiner

T

here are now many summer schools throughout the world which range from those that are run as a holiday camp and include dancing and theatre skills to highly professional vocational courses that audition dancers to attend. The venues are as varied, ranging from local dance schools which open up their own premises to give their pupils extra tuition

during the holidays, to established colleges which organise holiday courses where participants can experience being away from home and learn something of the life of a vocational student. Many are held in premises which are chosen for their links with a theatre or in places with beautiful

scenery which students can enjoy in their free time. Many pupils return to their usual dance school during the holidays and this can be a very beneficial because it gives teachers the chance to work with pupils on their technique and allows time for the introduction of guest teachers who introduce new styles of dance. Some pupils visit schools abroad as part of a group from their local area, this often leads to the additional opportunity to learn something of the life and the language of children from other backgrounds and cultures.

Development opportunity To get the best possible benefit from a summer school experience it is essential that parents select a school that is going to allow their children to develop both technique and artistry whilst being given the chance to make friends and enjoy free time. There are also often arrangements made to visit the theatre or local places of interest. Information is available in dance magazines and on web sites but often the best way to gather information is to seek advice from a teacher or ask other young dancers which schools they have enjoyed.

Attendance at a summer school brings with it many advantages including an improvement in the all round performance of the dancer and the chance to study techniques that have not previously been readily available. But as well as that it also allows students to observe dancers with varying standards and from different social and ethnic backgrounds and above all it provides a wonderful opportunity to make friends, many of which you may meet again at auditions and in fact throughout your dancing career.

Focus on dance There are also holiday courses for teachers and student teachers usually organised by dance societies. Much of the advice already given is applicable but of course they approach their training from a different perspective. The lectures and classes provided give the opportunity to learn or revise syllabus work and enhance teaching skills and for many teachers who have full time employment and look after their families, these weeks provide the opportunity to

With a vocational career in mind some students opt to join a summer school that may be a stepping stone to future full time training. It offers the chance to participate in classes five or six days a week, exposes them to a whole host of dance genres, gives the opportunity to be taught by very experienced teachers and work with choreographers and musicians. Often there is an on stage demonstration at the end of the week, which gives parents and guardians a small taster of the training involved and the chance to sit back and enjoy a performance

Preparation Having decided on the best choice of summer school to fit the requirements and talents of the student, some thought is needed to make the initial preparations to attend. Obviously there are forms to fill in

16 DanceReview | April2011

and payments to be made and then he or she must collect together the essential equipment required for the classes. This should include dance wear and shoes to cover all the genres involved, warm garments for the start and finish of each class, towels, tissues and a water bottle. Although all schools will provide first aid equipment and access to a doctor, the odd packet of plasters and a favourite tube of muscle rub are a useful back up, another important item to pack is the means to write down instructions from staff and reminder notes for yourself, this can be a pencil and paper or an electronic device but do remember that it is not a good idea to be continually texting on your mobile.

Pace yourself Most students tend to be very hard working and enthusiastic during the first few days of the course, however there is a danger of this causing fatigue and injury and it is a wise dancer who listens to the advice of their teacher and learns to pace themselves and build up stamina over a period of time.

concentrate on dance and have the chance to discuss problems and developments with likeminded colleagues. Some schools for both children and teachers focus on additional coaching to reach the required standard to enter for examinations; this again presents the chance to benefit from tuition with very well experienced teachers and choreographers. I hope that these brief guidelines go some way towards helping you to select the right summer school and prepare yourself to get the most out of the experience. But as a final note remember that you will only get out what you put in so be prepared to work hard and the benefits will be long lasting.

ISTD summer schools The ISTD holds a wide variety of Summer Schools and courses each year in July and August covering multiple genres including Imperial Classical Ballet, Modern Theatre, National Dance and Tap Dance. In 2011 the first Italian Summer School will also take place in July. For full details please visit www.istd.org.

A study in choreography While many people think that summer schools are just for dancers, that certainly isn’t the case at Sadler’s Wells with the launch of their Summer University. Open to aspiring choreographers from a wide range of dance styles, this is the first of its kind in the UK and will be directed by one of the most respected choreographers working in Europe today, Jonathan Burrows.

T

he Sadler’s Wells Summer University is a longer-term approach to choreographic study, designed for artists after their initial training but who are still in the very early stages of their careers. It is aimed specifically at choreographers with around five years professional experience and the four-year programme features a two week intensive period every summer starting in July 2011.

The programme will be accessible through open applications of up to 15 students per year and uses workshops dedicated to the exploration of ideas about composition in dance. It will also feature sessions by guest artists from other disciplines including philosophy, the visual arts and music.

Ambitious step The programme is an ambitious next stage in the range of initiatives Sadler’s Wells offers to support and develop choreographers. The Jerwood Charitable Foundation is supporting the programme as part of the ongoing Jerwood Studio at Sadler’s Wells which began in 2006, and provides support for artists to develop new avenues of exploration with people or ideas through a variety of means, including studio time, professional development courses, networking meals, and public talks. Sadler’s Wells Artistic Director, Alistair Spalding said: “Today dance boasts some of the most forwardthinking choreographers, attracting ever wider audiences and pushing the boundaries of what dance

22 DanceReview | April2011

can achieve. However with very rare exceptions such as Hofesh Shechter, it takes at least 10 years for professional choreographers to reach the capability of presenting work on the mid-to-large scale. “While dance training has progressed significantly in recent years, compared to other nations and other art forms the skills in broader creativity learned after college education are greatly at risk of falling behind. We have been fortunate to support and present the work of dance makers at the peaks of their career, and as such we have been reliant on a certain pool of talent, which it’s now our turn to feed.”

Jonathan Burrows The programme will be directed by Jonathan Burrows who danced

with the Royal Ballet for 13 years, before leaving in 1991 to pursue his own choreography. In 2001 he took the decision to concentrate on one to one collaborations with other artists, who would share the conception, making, performing and administrating of the work. His first collaboration was Weak Dance Strong Questions (2001), made with the theatre maker and performer Jan Ritsema, In 2002 he received an award from the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts in New York, in recognition for his ongoing contributions to contemporary dance. He is a Visiting Professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, Hamburg University and the Free University Berlin, and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Royal Holloway University of London.

Setting

the

trends

H

ow often in the past have you looked forward to something so much that when it happened it was all a bit of a disappointment? Thankfully that wasn’t the case with this year’s Move It because in my opinion it certainly lived up to everything that it promised.

Whether you went along for one day or all three, there was plenty to fill your time, from live performances on the stages to dance classes, competitions, auditions, master classes and interviews on the sofa. One of the highlights of the weekend had to be the appearance on stage of one of Britain’s most famous dance crews – Flawless. Having seen them on stage on the Saturday I can safely say that they were everything that the hype promised they would be and my advice to you would be to try and get tickets to see them as soon as possible.

Dance trends One of the great things about Move It is that you can find out everything that you need to know about every type of dance and this year was no different with the

24 DanceReview | April2011

opportunity to learn the steps of the latest dance trends that are shaking up the nation.

attractions judging by the number of people weighed down with assorted bags.

One of my particular favourites was Indie Ballet which is described as a shock new ballet style that is all about the music. It basically involves classic ballet pirouettes, pique and twirls blended with rocky indie tunes to make a totally unique style of dance, movement and entertainment to music from the likes of Razorlight, The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand, and Gomez.

Now I have always been a big fan of shopping so I was a bit like a small child in a sweet shop as I walked around admiring everything that was on offer. It would be a tough job to pick my one favourite stand although I was particularly impressed with Angelina Ballerina – and yes I did have my photo taken! One of my favourite stands for kit was Esme Dancewear who had a great range on offer and you should certainly check out their website for performance and festival costumes.

I was also really impressed with the phenomenon of Waacking, which originates in the USA and I am told will be the next big thing to sweep the nation due to its cool new funk style. Inspired by Madonna’s ‘Vogueing’, this underground street dance movement is much faster and packs even more attitude, style and passion – definitely one to look out for.

Get the gear A trip to Move It wouldn’t be complete without a trip around the exhibition stands to kit yourself out with all the latest gear, and this was definitely one of the popular

I could go on for hours talking about Move It but sadly I don’t have space, however I can safely say that I am already counting down the days until the next one.

Centre Stage Life through a lens This month we catch up with 30 year old Tama Barry who was born in New Zealand and is a Principal dancer with Scottish Ballet. How old were you when you first started dancing?

Which performance would you most like to appear in?

so therapeutic and it helps me to wind down after a hard day.

I was seven years old when I started jazz and tap and eight years old when I started ballet. I was a very energetic and strong willed child so in an effort to get rid of my excess energy my parents enrolled me in dancing. I had already tried all the sports available to me and didn’t like them. Dancing just kind of stuck with me. I think it was the music, movement and discipline which I liked as it meant I could be stubborn with myself instead of other people.

This is hard because I have fulfilled most of my dream roles… I have never danced anything by Jiri Kylian and that would be a bit of a dream come true. I love how his work looks so humble and organic.

On tour

Who is your inspiration? To be honest I don’t have one particular inspiration. I get inspired by what I’m doing while I am doing it; I very much live in the moment in that respect. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Actually there are two pieces of advice that I try to live by. The first piece is ‘if you’re late you’re last’ because it’s too easy to miss an opportunity simply by being disorganised. And secondly ‘be better than yesterday’. This sounds pretty basic but when you consider how short a dance career is, or even life for that matter, you don’t have a lot of time to sit on your laurels. What is the high point of your career so far? Having a career is the highest point. I have been so lucky to have had the chance to perform and live out one of my dreams. Becoming a professional dancer is such a tough challenge that once you get here you are grateful for all the opportunities you get.

What is the most memorable performance which you have seen? I guess it would have to be English National Ballet performing Nutcracker. It was the first ballet I had ever seen, I was about nine years old and we were visiting my grandmother in England and my parents got tickets. I have no idea how good it really was but it made me want to be up there with them.

Tama will be performing in Alice, a brand new production for Scottish Ballet, in which Artistic Director Ashley Page takes scenarios and characters from both Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, to create a magical new ‘life through a lens’. Alice premieres at Theatre Royal Glasgow from 12 – 16 April, before touring Scotland and Cardiff.

If you weren’t a dancer what would you most like to be? I would like to think I would have been a vet. I love animals and it would have been an amazing life, but you can’t have everything in life. What do you do in your free time? Normal stuff really, at the moment I spend a lot of it catching up with friends and watching the six nations it must be my Kiwi roots. I am also studying for a BA Hons in Psychology and I go to the gym a few nights a week. I also love cooking - I find it
