Annual Report 2019-2020 Dear Members of the Rosary High School Community, It is with tremendous gratitude and great pleasure that I present to you the 2019-2020 Annual Report.

Determination, generosity, and perseverance all enabled Rosary High School to come to fruition in 1962 by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, and those same attributes remain the glue that binds us together.

The torch continues to be passed down from our founders, and Rosary High School continues to flourish because of the unwavering support and commitment of our school community.

Whether you are a parent, alumna, alumnae parent, grandparent or friend of Rosary High School, your generosity of time, talent, and treasure during the 2019-2020 school year contributed to the success of the year. Thank you for the many ways you give of yourself to the school to make this an exceptional educational faith community for our students, faculty, and staff. Your contribution was felt throughout campus.

As we are in the midst of the 2020-2021 school year, we enter a transformational time for Rosary High School. Please continue to be involved and generous with your time, talents, and treasures.

Highlights of 2019-20 Rosary Adapts Amid Worldwide Pandemic Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rosary, along with schools across Illinois and across the country, moved to Remote Learning from March through the end of the 2019-20 school year. Rosary students and teachers rose to the challenge, finding inventive new ways of teaching, learning, volunteering, and socializing. The Class of 2020 graduated on schedule in May with a virtual ceremony, and each graduate was able to have an individual, in-person graduation in July.

McMahon Named Head of School in January Ms. Amy McMahon was appointed Head of School on January 30, 2020. She had served as Rosary’s Assistant Principal / Dean of Students since July 2018. Prior to her service at Rosary, Ms. McMahon worked for 16 years at the allgirls Willows Academy in Des Plaines, where she taught history and served as the Catholic high school’s athletic director. Ms. McMahon earned her undergraduate degree from St. Norbert College and her Masters in Educational Leadership from Concordia University.

Ms. McMahon accepted the appointment “with great joy and humility,” she said. “As Head of School, I will strive to illuminate the ways in which the Rosary High School experience shapes young women who emerge confident, self-assured leaders with a unique understanding of their God-given talents.”

Students Place at State Academic Challenge Rosary competed in the ACES (Academic Challenge for Engineering and Science) Regional Competition on February 4 at Geneva High School, earning seven top places. Sectional competition was March 5 at Northern Illinois University, and the State competition was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Achievements of the Class of 2020 • 70 graduates • 2 Catherine of Siena Scholars • 8 Illinois State Scholars • 20 National Honor Society members • Graduates earned $8.9 million in college scholarships • 11,120 Hours of Community Service • Average GPA of 3.53 • 100% college-bound (93% 4-year school,

4% 2-year school, 3% directly entering Military Service)

• 8 athletes to play their sport in college • Graduates will attend 48 colleges in 18 states • 12 graduates are daughters of Rosary alumnae

Math Team Qualifies for State ICTM Contest Rosary’s Math Team competed at the Batavia Invitational Math Contest December 12, with our freshmen and sophomores placing in all events. Rosary hosted eight schools for the Metro Suburban Conference Math Competition on December 14. The Math Team turned in an outstanding performance at ICTM Regional Competition (1A) on February 22 at North Central College in Naperville. The entire team qualified to advance to the State Competition, which was ultimately cancelled due to COVID-19.

Ensemble Earns Perfect Score at IHSA Rosary Ensemble earned a perfect score, and a Division I Superior Rating for the seventh year in a row at the IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest at Princeton High School on Saturday, March 7. Overall, Rosary music students received 27 Division I Superior Ratings and two Division II Excellent Ratings.

Highlights of 2019-20

Marmion-Rosary Band Earns High Ratings The Marmion Rosary Marching Band placed first in Class AA parade competition and fourth in the field show competition at Marengo in October. The band attended the 40th annual State Of The Art Band Competition sponsored by the Knights of Columbus in February. The Wind Ensemble was awarded a Superior/1st Division rating and the Outstanding Woodwind Section award for Class AAA. The Concert Band was awarded a Superior/1st Division rating, Outstanding Brass Section, and Outstanding Percussion Section. The band was presented with the Jim Moore Esprit de Corps Award for their congeniality, cooperation, and citizenship on display throughout the day.

Swim Team Places 6th at State The Rosary Beads placed second in the Metro Catholic Conference, and third at sectionals. The Beads placed sixth at state with only four swimmers qualifying in seven events. Jessica Geriane broke a Rosary record in the 100 Free that had been set by Olympic-qualifier Mary (Descenza ‘02) Mohler in 2001.

Mary’s record was 50.63 and Jessica swam the 100 Free in 50.48.

Rosary Honors Alumnae Healthcare Professionals

Cross Country Places 9th at State; Surtz Places First Royals Cross Country took first place at conference, first at regionals and third at sectionals, qualifying seven runners for the State meet where they earned 9th place. Lianna Surtz was Metro Conference champion, first at regionals and sectionals, and the Class 2A State Champion.

In March 2020, Rosary High School honored our graduates working in the healthcare field during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We received more than 70 photo submissions from graduates and their families and friends that we collected in a public photo gallery. “Your courage and selflessness are an inspiration to us all,” we wrote. “We pray that you may be protected and blessed in your care for the sick. You are in the prayers of the Rosary Community, today and every day. Thank you for preaching with your lives.”

Highlights of 2019-20 Rosary Presents The Little Mermaid Rosary’s Fall musical, The Little Mermaid, was performed November 7-10 featuring 75+ students from Rosary and Marmion Academy. The weekend featured specialty cocktails in Ariel’s Grotto in the evenings and a family picnic under the sea before Sunday’s matinee, both fundraisers for the school’s Fine Arts Boosters.

Eight Athletes Commit to Play in College

Rosary Artists Create Portraits for Children Rosary artists contributed to The Memory Project for the third year, creating portraits of children around the world who face substantial challenges such as violence, war, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents. Rosary artists have created portraits for children Syria (below), Peru, and Puerto Rico.

Eight Rosary athletes in the Class of 2020 have committed to continue their sport at the college level: Celeste Cozzoni (Volleyball) Aurora University; Paige Gardella (Volleyball) Ithaca College; Zoe Ketterman (Basketball) Purdue University– Fort Wayne; Sarah Konovodoff (Volleyball) University of Northern Iowa; Molly Mulvey (Volleyball) St. Norbert College; Chloe Saltijeral (Softball) Missouri University of Science and Technology; Emma Schwartz (Cross Country/Track) Benedictine University; and Elizabeth Sperlakis (Swimming) Carroll University.

Students March for Life in DC Twenty-nine Rosary students traveled to Washington, DC, for the annual March for Life in January, accompanied by Campus Minister Miss Bridget Gamboni and a group of parent chaperones. This year, the Rosary group traveled via bus with the Diocese of Rockford, including Bishop David Malloy. In addition to participating in the March for Life on January 24, Rosary students visited the St. John Paul II National Shrine, attended Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and had the opportunity to see some of the monuments on the National Mall.

STEM Wing Capital Campaign Rosary Women in STEM Capital Campaign Rosary High School is pleased to announce the completion of Rosary’s Women in STEM Capital Campaign.

This project included floor to ceiling renovations of three science classrooms, one prep room, and one additional classroom. By October 2020, renovations of our new classrooms in the STEM Wing will be fully complete.

The new state-of-the-art spaces reflect the rigorous education Rosary provides in science and enable the department to expose students to advances in technology, engineering, biometrics, and genetics.

Over 600 donors have come together to fully fund the renovation, and gratitude extends to all those who gave in time, talent, or treasure.

Thank you to the Dunham Fund for continuing to believe in the mission of Rosary High School and recognizing the importance of empowering young women in the sciences. The Dunham Fund awarded Rosary a $250,000 matching grant.

Our students are already using the dynamic new spaces to learn and grow in STEM studies. Videos of our STEM classrooms in action will be available on our Rosary High School YouTube channel in November.

On behalf of the students, faculty, staff, and administration of Rosary High School, thank you for your commitment to furthering all-female education.
