ry, frizzy hair and flyaway hair can undo a beautiful summer look in no time. Luckily, as ambassadors of the ARROJO product line, Shag86 in Little Falls can help problem hair become soft and silky hair, with a product called ReFRESH dry conditioner. With a shake and a few sprays, the conditioner will dissipate frizz and dryness and turn unhealthy hair into soft and shiny locks. The key ingredients include Hydrolyzed Keratin, Panthenol, Vitamin E and Vitamin B5, all of which contribute to the process of conditioning, healing damage and ensuring that the user’s hair shines flawlessly. The product works best when used with ReFINISH dry shampoo, which adds volume and texture to the crown, while ReFRESH dry conditioner adds softness, silk and shine from mid-lengths to ends. The magic of these two products can be used on any hair type.

This extraordinary event allows vendors to: sell products, generate leads, and interact and engage with hundreds of attendees, all in a single day. Limited space is available. To request more information or to reserve your space call 973-276-1688 or visit www.NorthJerseyWomanExpo.com.

Shag86, with a mantra of “life, hair and happiness,” is located at 86 Main Street, Little Falls. To schedule an appointment, call 973-837-0086 or visit www.shag86.com.

The award-winning room transformation was implemented because “the décor was dated…there wasn’t enough seating in the space and the light wasn’t sufficient either.” The homeowners wanted a more contemporary style, which is exactly what they were given. With transitional furniture and lighting, bold colors borrowed from the adjacent kitchen and an updated fireplace, the room “is now truly the comfortable family and casual entertaining area these homeowners desired.” Decorating Den Interiors is located at 26 Martin Road in Verona. emPOWERED Your Renewable Energy Future

Architecture. Design. Restoration. Your home is who you are.

NJPAC Announces Summer Programs For Young Artists

It showcases your personality and taste. It holds all your treasures and memories. It’s not just a place to live, it’s where your life happens.

A renovation doesn’t have to be petrifying. Preserving your home’s charm, history and detail is vital—it’s what drew you here. But a century old home can often fall short of meeting the needs of its 21st century family. It is essential to find just the right balance between function and beauty— while maintaining a sensitivity to the style and character which makes your home unique.

A renovation doesn’t need to look obvious. It’s important to engage licensed professionals that understand your home and what it means to you. You aren’t just in need of more space, or a floor plan that functions better. You’re looking for the logical evolution of your home. We will work with you to maximize your homes potential while accentuating and expanding on its history and architectural character.

Protect Your Eyes from Summer Sun Damage

for those who wear contact lenses, UVblocking contacts. Wrap-around sunglasses are best as they protect the eyes and the skin around the eyes. There are also many types of sports eye protection glasses that offer UV protection as well.

UV radiation, whether from natural sunlight or artificial UV rays, can damage the eye, affecting surface tissues and internal structures, such as the cornea and lens. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can lead to cataracts, skin cancer around the eyelids, and other eye disorders.

It is very important to keep several things in mind in particular when buying sunglasses for children. Kid’s glasses should have unbreakable polycarbonate lenses. The frames should be bendable and the lenses should not pop out. Check to make sure the glasses fit well, because children will not wear glasses that don’t fit well. It is best to have the child try the glasses on and make sure they shield enough of the eye above, below and on the sides.

The greatest amount of UV protection is achieved with a combination of: sunglasses that block 99–100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B rays; a wide-brimmed hat; and

Spending long hours in the sun without adequate eye protection can increase the changes of developing certain eye disorders such as: Cataract

UV rays, especially UV-B rays, may also cause some kinds of cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, the part of the eye that focuses the light we see.

Macular Degeneration

UV rays may lead to macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss for older Americans.

Keep in mind that Polarized has nothing to do with UV protections, it just reduces glare.

Have your optician check your glasses to measure UV protection.

Pterygium

A growth that begins on the white of the eye and may involve the cornea. Eventually, the growth may block vision. It is more common in people who work or spend extended periods of time outside in the sun and wind.

Corneal Sunburn

Corneal sunburn, called photokeratitis, is the result of high short-term exposure to UV-B rays. Long hours at the beach or skiing without proper eye protection can cause this problem. It can be very painful and may cause temporary vision loss.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer around the eyelids is also linked to prolonged UV exposure.

hronic pain is a life changer, whether it is due to a sports injury, another other type of injury or the aging process. Pain that lasts weeks, months and sometimes even years affects a person’s ability to reach work goals, enjoy leisure time or accomplish everyday tasks. The medical experts at ACES Premier Orthopaedics know this, so an interventional pain management center was recently added to their Bloomfield office. Located at 1255 Broad Street, the Spine & Pain Center was opened to meet the fluctuating needs of the medical environment with a conservative treatment approach. “Interventional pain management is an incredible specialty right now,” says Mary Ellen Redding, marketing director at ACES Premier Orthopaedics. Redding has been an integral part of the administration area of the practice for 15 years. “This is answering a need for more specialized medicine.”

In the Bloomfield office, patients can be reassured that every approach to controlling and alleviating chronic pain will be considered before one of the physicians recommends a surgical solution. As a multispecialty orthopedic pain management group, treatments such as plasma therapy, epidural injections and spinal cord stimulation are investigated as the first steps in patient treatment. “All the doctors are very conservative,” Redding explains. “They will exhaust every avenue of conservative treatment before surgery.” Open since late last summer, the Spine & Pain Center is seeing an increasing number of patients that are suffering from both acute and chronic pain. The doctors believe that patients should always see them, even if it’s at the end of the office visit with a PA or a post-op visit.” The Spine & Pain Center in Bloomfield is at the same location as the surgery center. With the opening of the pain management center and another office to be opened in Englewood early next year, Redding said more staff will be necessary. Four additional physicians will be joining the practice by the end of this year as well as two more PAs to ensure that patients continue to receive excellent orthopedic care. “I cannot emphasize enough just how much our doctors and staff are concerned about our patients.”

BEST DENTIST GOLD WINNER

An Evening With Graham Nash

At Josephsen Family Dental, Sometimes it is the dentistry that our patients DON’T need of which we’re most proud.

Legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee-with Crosby, Stills, Nash and the Hollies. He was also inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame twice as a solo artist and with CSN and he is a Grammy Award winner. 8pm. bergenPAC, 30 North Van Brunt St., Engelwood. 201-227-1030. www.bergenpac.org

Our new patient had perfectly healthy teeth that were very discolored from medications they had required as a child. For all of their adult life, they had been told the only option was to cover the teeth with crowns, veneers, or bonding - all at significant cost, and all requiring at least some drilling of otherwise strong and intact natural tooth structure.

The “La Bella Musica” Concert The quartet will present a concert titled “Italian Serenade,” featuring traditional Italian music such as “Reginella Campagnola,” “Torna a Surriento,” “Tra Veglia e Sonno” and “The Luna Waltz.” The group is comprised of two mandolins, a flute and a guitar. Free. Registration is required. 7pm. West Caldwell Public Library, 30 Clinton Rd., West Caldwell. 973-226-5441. westcaldwell.bccls.org

‘Safe Shredding’ Temple Sholom will host ‘Safe Shredding’ on a monthly basis. It is a safe way to discard personal or financial papers that people want to get rid of. Call the temple office at to arrange a drop off or inquire about other dates. Temple Sholom of West Essex, 760 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove. 973-239-1321.

Then they came to see us at Josephsen Family Dental. The result? No drilling, no removal of tooth structure, no man-made dentistry artificially covering the teeth. Just their natural teeth, whitened conservatively and preventively by Dr. Josephsen. For our patient, our specialized non-invasive whitening was all the dentistry that they needed for a life-changing, confident smile. Of course, every patient’s dentistry is unique, and when needed, we can always provide you with some terrific restorative options and materials. We always welcome new patients, children and families of all ages. Whether a simple checkup or the very best in comprehensive treatment,

It is our privilege to care for you.

Caldwell Eyecare

Your One Stop for Excellent Eye Care and Eyewear

T

he concept of Dr. Glenn Malat’s approach to his practice is simple—to provide patients with the best possible experience After many years in Manhattan, building the second largest contact lens practice in the city, he moved his practice to West Caldwell and continues to build lasting relationships with his patients. At Caldwell Eyecare, Dr. Malat treats all aspects of vision care including glaucoma detection and treatment, cataract evaluation and implant options, Lasik evaluation, low vision and dry eye to name a few. Suzanne Zuppa, a skilled licensed optician, can help you find the perfect frame, from a great selection, including Alain Mikli, Gucci, Kate Spade and Ray Ban, and discuss all the ideal lens options customized to the patient. Dr. Malat is focused on “providing the best experience,” by limiting the number of patients he sees per day to about half the average of many of his peers. “This allows us to properly assess and consult with patients. We are here to evaluate, diagnose and treat, and then to provide all necessary follow up. Come to us and see what it’s like when the focus is on you,” he states. A year ago, Caldwell Eyecare moved to a brand new modern office that offers the latest technological advances to diagnose and treat conditions and diseases of the eye. Dr. Malat is especially excited about a new technology called Optical Coherence Tomography—a non-invasive imaging technique used to diagnose and manage retinal diseases and glaucoma “It enables me to look behind the eye where many diseases can originate, before patients have any symptoms. Early diagnosis leads to early treatment, which may lead to preserving vision and the health of the eye. This painless test takes about two minutes.” Digital photography allows Dr. Malat to take photos and videos of the eye to monitor disease

Dr. Glenn Malat

progression and treatment plans. Another new technology creates a computerized map and model of the cornea, which is important to gauge the health of the eye, especially for contact lens wearers. Along with receiving ex-cellent eye care, patients can choose from a large selection of on-trend eyewear. Caldwell Eyecare carries frames for children and adults, including those used for sports. “That’s the beauty of this business,” Dr. Malat says. “It’s one of the few areas of medicine where function and fashion meet.” He stresses that the practice has its own lab, which means prescriptions are not sent out to be processed and can be provided to patients quickly. Dr. Malat is proud to be the “go to” for patients who are hard to fit for contact lenses. “Eye Surgeons in the area refer patients to Caldwell Eyecare who are difficult to fit due to eye injury or disease. We carry a large supply of contact lenses and its not uncommon for patients to leave with their lenses on their initial visit. Not one to shy away from eyewear trends, Dr. Malat fits patients with cosmetic contact lenses that add contrast and vibrancy to eye color, which naturally fades with age. These lenses can be made with or without a prescription. Dr. Malat considers himself fortunate to see many of his patients grow into adults and, in turn, bring their children to see him; the loyalty he and his staff embrace is reciprocated. “Patients come in with a problem and walk out with a solution. The Caldwell Eyecare office is also home to David Gurian, A.B.A., owner of Gurian Hearing, where you will find the right hearing solution for you or your family and the latest in hearing technology.

Fresh Delights Shine at Sefarat

T

he corner of Pleasant Valley Way and Eagle Rock Avenue in West Orange is an unlikely hotspot for Mediterranean food. Yet, people from all over the area flock to Sefarat Mediterranean Cuisine for its tantalizing delights—and you should too! Step into Sefarat and savor the tastes of this region. The chef makes every effort to source ingredients from the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. He combines locally-grown items with perfectly balanced spices to make unique, fusion dishes. The buzzword permeating every presentation is “fresh.” Menu choices include generous portions of meats, vegetables and fish. Make sure to start your meal with the refreshing Shepherd Salad, which includes cucumbers, tomatoes and red onion diced very small with parsley, olive oil and vinegar, and is served with delicious pita bread. Sample other mouthwatering cold appetizers such as the excellent Hummus (chickpeas, garlic and sesame tahini), Cacik (yogurt mixed with cucumber, mint, dill and garlic), Eggplant Salad (eggplant, tomatoes, red peppers and garlic) or Tabuleh (cracked wheat, green onions, tomato and parsley). Small and large mixed appetizer platters also are offered if you cannot choose just one. If you are craving kebabs as your main entrée, Sefarat certainly has you covered. One common favorite is the extremely flavorful and succulent Chicken Shish Kebab. Other well-seasoned options include the Skewered Ground Chicken Skewered Ground Lamb and the Lamb Shish Kebab. All kebabs are served with a light yogurt sauce on the side. Do not to overlook the flavorful rice! Once again, for the undecided, Sefarat has your solution in the form of a combination plate. For those looking for more traditional Mediterranean fare, consider the sautéed lamb, a beautiful dish of diced lamb, tomatoes, red bell peppers, onions, parsley and garlic, embellished with fresh rosemary, creatively presented in a skillet.

Share the experience with your friends! Sefarat offers both onand off-premise catering. The restaurant is available for private party rentals as well. he days of chilly air and dull skies have been replaced with the sights and sounds of warmer weather. Prime Steak… Seafood… Pasta

Make a memorable entrance. Invite guests into your gathering with warm and cheerful decor, starting with your door. Hang a moss-adorned wreath with a few vibrant sprigs of pink roses or yellow tulips, which you can keep up long after the event. Deck the table. Make sure your centerpiece provides a bright and welcoming ambiance. A low key gathering calls for the downhome elegance of daisies and grasses shooting from mini terra cotta pots or aluminum canisters. More formal events will shine with fresh cut lilies, roses and tulips placed in short cube or rectangle glass vases. Start with small bites. Serve a few appetizers for your crowd to enjoy as they wait for other guests to arrive. You can’t go wrong with deviled eggs garnished with fresh herbs or cheese and crackers. Aim for three cheeses – one hard (Parmesan), one soft (Brie) and one blue. Serve pairings that please. Warm weather foods pair perfectly with a fruit-forward wine like pinot grigio. This crisp and clean wine goes well with seafood, chicken or white-sauce pasta entrees.

Embrace warm weather. Bring the garden to your table with fresh fruits and vegetables. Plump, red strawberries look and taste wonderful atop a bed of fresh spinach with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Fresh asparagus stems give quiche and egg casseroles texture, while also making a great sauteed side dish. Also try this Chicken with Tomatoes and Olives recipe that’s easy to make and sure to please. From simple floral arrangements to the colorful foods you serve, creating a lovely alfresco gathering is easier than you think. DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

LESSONS LEARNED

R

ecently, I spent some time with one of my clients, a successful business owner and entrepreneur who is an inventor of many products. He is also involved with manufacturing and one of his products has sold over 25 million units. My role is to help place his products in the market, set up meetings with key decision makers and grow his business. Through several client meetings, I realized he had embodied several key attributes that contributed greatly to his long-term success:

1. Gratitude & Appreciation for Peoples’ Time If you want to build relationships, there’s nothing like letting people know that you truly appreciate their time, knowledge and expertise when it is warranted. After a meeting to explore a vendor’s capabilities, my client looked them in the eye and expressed specifically in detail what he admired about the information they shared. There was no sugar coating or fluff; he sincerely showed his appreciation for their craft and time..My client doesn’t g ive out compliments freely, but when he does, it means a great deal and the clients appreciate it.

2. Taking A New Path People may say, “that’s not the way we do that in our industry or business.” Sometimes my client will have valid reasons behind a marketing strategy or endorsement deal that, only in the long run, will make sense. But for some people it might be hard to go against the popular vote because we’ve grown up trying to always fit in. What sneakers or clothes were your friends wearing in grade school that you also needed? We have a craving to fit in with the group. But in reality, sometimes you need to travel on a different path to make a difference. I admire that about my client; he reminds me to do the same with my own activities.

“Never seem more learned than the people you are with. Wear your learning like a pocket watch and keep it hidden. Do not pull it out to count the hours, but give the time when you are asked.”

-Lord Chesterfield, British Statesman

Barry Farber

What I respect most is his ability to speak his mind and stay true to his goal. He possesses the ability to think and act in a new direction. Even though some people might think it is crazy, it is what separates high achievers from the rest.

3. Contagious Passion My client’s enthusiasm is refreshing. When he explains his product, his enthusiasm is off the charts. It is also clear that he does his research on the product in such an extensive way that the facts and figures and information that he presents support his case. He made you a believer of the overall goal. I was told many years ago that enthusiasm comes from the Greek word enthios, which means “the God within.” What an apt description and what a way to go through life. When your clients can become your mentors, it not only brings the relationship to a new level but you end up learning some valuable lessons along the way.

Barry Farber consults with corporations, professional athletes and entertainers helping them market their products and gain access to new business.
