Dear Sisters, I've continually been getting many updates from all of you throughout the past several months.

Keep it up, sisters! It's been such a joy seeing updates from lodges, pictures of both in-person and virtual events, and articles on all things Danish!

As we approach the autumn, I'm looking forward to hearing more from each lodge and I'm thinking about upcoming things like the 2023 Sisterhood Convention and this winter's Christmas edition on the DSN. Don't forget to get your Christmas ads in early this year! Email me with any questions.

While many of us still aren't able to travel due to the ongoing pandemic, I know some have been fortunate to visit Denmark or other sites with Danish history. If you haven't been able to, I hope you have revisited some of those places by looking back at your photos...and while you're looking at photos and recalling your past or recent trips...why not send some of those over to be featured on the cover of the DSN?

In any case, I thank you all for submitting great photos, stories, updates and more for the DSN. I hope each of you is staying safe and healthy and that you're able to enjoy some nice autumnal weather.

On the Cover Title: Kransekage Location: Racine, WI Photo by: Anna Nielsen The word "kransekage" translates to "wreath cake" in English, which fittingly describes this traditional Danish cake, often serves at New Year's celebrations.

Some Danes and many Danish Americans also serve this cake for other special occasions including weddings, holidays, funerals and other special events. A Kransekage is made with almond paste and often can be found with little Danish flags adorning it.

HAABETS FREMTID, LODGE 78 TROY, NEW YORK Today our Lodge was invited to a picnic with the Schenectady Lodge. It was a perfect day, with no rain, as we traveled down the road to visit at the home of Edith Munch. There were four of our ladies plus our driver, Harry Jensen, who joined five of their ladies. It was wonderful to spend time together and enjoy the out-of-doors.

Her home could not be missed for the American flag, Danish flag, and Norwegian flags were flying high in her front yard.

As is normal for a danish luncheon, we had several dishes to choose from and of course the variety of desserts. The table was set with a red cloth and red and white napkins even the Danish and American flags were displayed as center pieces. Lots of conversation and laughs took place as we shared together. Since we are both smaller lodges now, we are hoping to meet together more often.

In June we drove to visit with our Sister Mildred Shea at her home. She is not able to

leave home very much and so enjoyed having the company. We brought a sandwich lunch with homemade strawberry shortcake for dessert. Six of us gathered to enjoy this time together. These were a couple of times we were able to meet together since we were shut-in for COVID, Our normal restaurant has not reopened and not all our ladies are feeling comfortable to go out to eat just yet. It is wonderful to share with our sisters and encourage one another.

COVID is still a little scary in our area of the country so we hope everyone stays well and are able to enjoy the out-of-doors, warm weather, and time with family. Perhaps we can meet again soon and resume our regular meetings once more.

Updates from Amber Lodge, Brainerd, MN Amber Lodge members and guests met June 21st at the home of Nealna Gylling on beautiful Gull Lake in the Brainerd, MN, area to celebrate Sanct Hans Aften. We had a brief meeting to discuss upcoming events our lodge is involved in. Everyone brought food for a delicious potluck followed by a campfire and traditional burning of the witch.

Sister Judy Andersen entertained us by reading several stories from a book of Scandinavian Folk and Fairy Tales.

June 22 was the funeral of our dear sister, Joni Hill. Several Amber Lodge members helped serve Danish decorated donuts and cupcakes at the reception at the Hill family farm south of Brainerd. It was a beautiful afternoon celebrating a beautiful sister.

We miss both sisters, Alma Miller and Joni Hill, that passed away this year.

July 12th was a very special meeting for Amber Lodge. We welcomed Jerry and Ricke Bly from Tyler, MN a very Danish community in Southwestern MN, who presented a PowerPoint on history of Danebod, the Danish church and Danish Sisterhood News, September 2021

Folk School in Tyler. Several of our members and guests had attended the Folk School in the past. We appreciated learning the history of Danebod from Jerry and Ricke. We all enjoyed a fabulous potluck with our guests, followed by a business meeting.

We are all grateful to be meeting in person again and enjoying our beautiful Minnesota summer!!

West District and conventions are held every year in the Spring.

In following years several Delegates and Alternates from the Dogwood Loge were also sent to the Danish Sisterhood of America’s National Conventions, which is held every 4th years in the Fall.

Since Dogwood Lodge was installed, several teams have further been participating in the annual PNW bowling tournaments and over the years managed to win some of the trophies.

In 2009 we established our own website www.danishsisterhood.ca which is visited by many each month.

At the 2010 PNW Convention a resolution was presented to have Lodges adopt a “Danish Sisterhood Pet Club”. Any pet could become a member of your lodge for a one-time initiation fee – $10. The idea was to use it as a fund raiser as well as bringing people together through a different means, their pets. Vancouver Dogwood Lodge 179 adopted this immediately and can now proudly introduce their ‘Dogwood Pet Club’.

Over the many years the Canadian Dogwood Lodge #179 has participated in many different events such as Whist drives, Bazaars, Garage Sales, Picnics, BBQ’s, Country Fair, Midsummer Festival, Summer Alexandra Multicultural Festival and as a group joins ‘Kroaften’, just to name a few – and newsletters are sent out 4 times a year announcing all events.

The Danish Sisterhood Lodge #179, together with the Danish Brotherhood Lodge # 328, also has held annual ‘Andespil’s (Bingo’s ) since 1977, where the Sisters makes the sandwiches (sometimes up to 400 sandwiches) and the Brothers are in charge of the Bingo.

The lodge holds six formal meetings and four social meetings per calendar year. The formal (business) meetings are held at CMM on the 3rd Thursday in January, March, May, June, September and November at 5:30pm and conducted according to their Bylaws and a Board consisting of 9 Members. Meetings starts with ‘a Danish segment ‘ and after the business is concluded - followed by some fun & games, organized by our Social Committee.

The Social meetings are held in February, April, October and December.(Location, date and time are announced prior.) And in special months we celebrate :alentine’s Day, St. Patrick ’s Day and Halloween, where the members dress up in various outfits and prizes are handed out for best costume.

Our special Anniversary dinner is held in June every year honouring long-time members and special round birthdays and our ‘hyggelig’ Christmas Party are held in December with a typical Danish dinner, raffle tickets and exchange of Christmas gifts and nobody goes home empty handed.

With the proceeds from all our yearly events - we donate to various needy organizations.

Dogwood Lodge #179 was the very first Lodge organized in Canada in 1971 and since then many of the original members have since regretfully passed away but many new members have joined over the years and we look forward to many more productive years with more members joining our Lodge.

Being part of the Sisterhood Lodge #179 is never dull – we have a lively and productive Lodge however as most other organizations, we need to increase our membership, though since last report we did enroll 3 new members – and we are always striving to maintain the Danish spirit and heritage by making it true, that “DANES ARE ALL HEART” .

Due to the covid-19 pandemic this 50th Anniversary was delayed until restrictions were lifted and finally able to be celebrated at a very special and memorable event for all Sisters.

4th of July Update from Katherine Lodge #20, Kenosha WI Every year, the Katherine Lodge #20 in Kenosha, WI participates in the local parade. Our goal is to bring community awareness to our existence and to encourage excitement around our Danish heritage locally. On June 27, 2021, 6 of our members and their families participated in the parade by riding on our float or riding their bikes. Participants included our President, Majbritt Andersen-Stewart, her daughters Devin and Danika and her husband Mark, Secretary Anna Nielsen and her boyfriend Dan, Marshall Kara Ernst-Schalk and her husband Brian, and lodge 300 member Tamara Patton and her son John Henry!

The overall theme for the parade was “A Centennial Celebration of Women’s Right to Vote” celebrating 100 years (1920) since women were allowed the right to vote in America.

Our float theme was “Women and Their Bicycles: The Great Equalizers”. When we approached our application and theme, we knew we had to tie our theme back to the overall parade theme if we wanted to be entered into the judging competition. The three judges came around to see every float and have us speak to our theme.

I spoke to our organization being the Danish Sisterhood of America, an organization of women (and men) who pride ourselves on our progressive history. Denmark first gave women the right to vote in 1905, 15 years before they were given the privilege in America. In 1905 the only form of trans-

portation that was available in Denmark was bicycles so women either had to walk or ride a bike to be able to participate in any election. To this day, the most common form of transportation in Denmark is the bicycle and acts as the best equalizer between all classes within society. When all was said and done, we were awarded 3rd Place for Best Use of Theme out of 11 floats and 81 other organizations and groups!

We cannot wait to go bigger and better next year!

Danish Sisterhood News, September 2021

Resolution: Elsa Holm Humiston Elsa Holm Humiston, 101, of Algood, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2021, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born Jan. 3, 1920, in Odense, Denmark, daughter of the late George F. Holm and Elsa (Petersen) Holm. She grew up and raised her family in Connecticut, moved to Milan, N.H., in 1977, were she lived until moving to Tennessee in 2015.

She is survived by her son Robert G. Humiston and his wife Diane of Utah; her daughters Else Smith of Tennessee, Betsy Humiston of Connecticut and Karen Mizell of South Carolina; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Robert L. Humiston, her son Carl W. Humiston, and her brother George C. Holm.

A memorial service and burial will be held in Milan at the convenience of the family.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Milan Community United Methodist Church, PO Box 122, Milan, NH 03588.

Resolution: Marion E. Hallum On Thursday, June 24, 2021, Marion E. Hallum passed peacefully at her home in Solvang, CA. After conquering ovarian cancer 14 years ago, Marion tirelessly and with immense grace, succumbed after a second 5-year battle.

She fought these battles with her tremendous sense of humor and always found a way to find the ridiculous in any difficult situation. She was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

Through her last days, she was surrounded by loving friends who meant the world to her.

Marion was born in 1957 to Martin “Bud” Hallum and Barbara Hallum. She was raised in the Santa Ynez Valley and graduated from Santa Ynez Valley Union High School in 1975. She went on to study music and graduate from USC, where she played saxophone for the acclaimed USC marching band. She had the honor of playing “Tusk” with the band during the making of the Fleetwood Mac Music Video (recording).

After graduating from USC, Marion moved to Santa Barbara, where she held various jobs Danish Sisterhood News, September 2021

while pursuing a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education at UCSB. Marion worked at the Montecito YMCA as the Director of Early Childhood Programs from 1984 – 1986 and at Santa Barbara Family Care Center from 1986 – 1991.

In 1991, Marion relocated to Anchorage, where she worked for the State of Alaska, Office of Public Advocacy, as a GAL (Guardian ad Litem).

From that position, Marion became the statewide CASA Trainer, eventually advancing to Director of CASA program for the State of Alaska. She dedicated her life to helping abused and neglected foster children.

Each summer Marion used a week of her personal leave to volunteer at Camp Hope. She loved working with those young Children of Alcoholics/Addicts (COAs) at camp, teaching them to make sense of their parent(s)’ disease, and helping them to let go of some of their heavy burdens of guilt and shame. She even volunteered with a bald head, after going through chemotherapy for her initial diagnosis of ovarian cancer! She was deeply loved by the children and other camp workers alike.

Marion loved the beauty and wonder of Alaska.

She particularly enjoyed the wildlife and was enamored by frequent visits of moose and eagles at her lakeside home.

After retiring from the State of Alaska in 2016, Marion returned to the Santa Ynez Valley 8

where she worked part time at the SYV YMCA when engaging in a variety of volunteer and community activities. Marion began the “Wine Club” to benefit the CASA program of Santa Barbara and later to benefit “The Troops.” She was active in Danish Sisterhood, SYV Choral, and an adamant supporter of the community food bank. Marion is known for her beautiful photography of nature, birds and wildlife, sharing her photos on social media for the enjoyment of others.

Marion was passionate about many causes, including CASA, Homeless Pets, Environmental Wellness, Equality, and Social Justice. She believed in shopping local and supporting small business.

Marion was a catalyst for bringing people together and encouraging community. She absolutely loved the Santa Ynez Valley, especially her town of Solvang where she embraced her love of animals, na-

ture photography, gardening, and home decorating.

Surrounded by her many friends, family and her beloved dog Cooper, Marion took full advantage of living in such a beautiful place.

Marion is survived by her many dear friends, her brother John Hallum and her two nieces, Katlyn Alegria and Crystal Hallum. Honoring Marion’s wishes, there will be a celebration of life at a later date.

We would like to extend gratitude to her team of doctors from UCLA as well as Dr. Julie Taguchi and Dr. Juliet Penn of Santa Barbara. The Palliative Care nurses from VNA also provided tremendous support during her final months.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local CASA organization. Her family and friends will also be donating blood or platelets in her honor, welcoming any and all to join in.

Greetings from Bluewater Mermaids Lodge #184, Sarnia, ON/Port Huron, MI We are now in mid August and after more than 16 months, the border between Michigan and Ontario have finally opened but only for Americans coming to Canada, we cannot cross the bridge to Port Huron, MI.

We have missed getting together , but as most of us have now been vaccinated and we have more freedom, still wearing masks inside, but now able to go to restaurants and stores, observing distance.

Five Canadian sisters met at Sarnia Bay July 31st. It was a lovely day for a stroll along the Bay and the beautiful gardens and it was so good to be able to see each other in person other than just on Zoom.

We are now hoping to get together for a meeting the end of September, our last meeting was February 2020.

An old sister and founding member of ours Dina Knudsen turned 99 years old on August 6th , she is now living in a nursing home close by and her son took her home for the afternoon. I went to visit with her and shared birthday cake with her, her son and two grandsons. She enjoyed her day and look forward to another year hoping to celebrate 100.

This year it looks like the kids will be going back to school in September, the past year has been difficult for many working and learning from home.

Tivoli-One Man's Vision (cont. from July and August 2021 issues)

In 1874 one of the best known buildings in Tivoli was built, the Peacock Theatre. Pantomime had been a part of the Tivoli experience from the beginning. The new theater was built in a Chinese style. It replaced a small theater that had been there since the opening. This original building was made of all timber and painted canvas. It went through a series of major updates and repairs but in 1873 it was decided it needed to be replaced.

Architect Vilhelm Dahlerup was commissioned to submit a proposal (at the time he was already working on the design for the Royal Danish Theater.). Dahlerup had never been to China, but he had seen pictures of Chinese buildings taken by a fellow architect. He drew up the plans for the present day Peacock Theater and submitted them. It was designed with bright colors to go along with the philosophical symbolism of the Chinese. Chinese letters above the stage can be translated as “Shared joy with the people.” The audience stands or sits in the open with the stage inside the building. The curtain is a mechanical peacock tail which, according to an article on the internet, requires 5 men to operate.

Pantomime means a play where performers use gestures rather than their voice to put on the performance. Italian pantomime was introduced in Denmark by Guiseppe Casorti, It includes the characters Cassander (the old father), Columbine (his beautiful daughter), Harlequin (Colombine’s lover) and the “clown” servant, Pierrot.

The children especially love Pierrot. A statue of this clown was erected in Tivoli in 1896.

It commemorates Niels Henrik Volkersen who played the part of Pierrot at Tivoli for nearly 50 years. Danes commonly use this statue as a place to meet friends in the park.

The name Nimb has been associated with Tivoli since 1877 when Vilhelm and Louise Nimb took over their first Tivoli restaurant named Divan 2 on Tivoli Lake, popularly known as Nimb’s Terrace. Divan 2 was the first restaurant to introduce the open-face sandwich form. The famous

Moorish-inspired building erected in 1909 in the park came to be called The Nimb. Through the years it has housed various establishments but in 2008 after a major rennovation it opened as the Nimb Hotel, with several gourmet-oriented establishments. It was awarded the hotel of the year in 2015 by the Small Luxury Hotels organization, being selected out of 520 small luxury hotels throughout the world. There are 17 rooms, 12 suites and 3 restaurants in the building. Make your reservation early and bring your pocketbook.

In the early 20th century Tivoli like many places throughout the world, hosted human exhibitions. The idea of displaying living human beings began in Germany in the middle 1800’s.

The intention was to create a history of mankind by showing how humans had progressed. Sadly what may have been a “noble” idea quickly became a way to show Europeans as humans who had evolved—superior to other humans in the world.

By the 1870’s exhibition of “exotic” populations became popular in many countries. “Human zoos” could be found in Europe and in the United States. This type of human expositions persisted in various forms into the 21st century.

The exhibitions in Tivoli were meant to show foreign races and their way life to the Danes. The first exhibition was held in 1901 showing “exotic” human beings from India and included coolies with their rickshaws, snake charmers and much more. It was a great draw as crowds of Danes filled Tivoli to see these “strange sites” and, hopefully, learn about othe cultures.

As the years have passed, Tivoli has grown and changed. That was the original intention of Georg Carstsensen. In 1844 he was quoted as saying, “Tivoli will never, so to speak, be finished.” He was right.

In 1890 the main entrance to the park was changed to the now well-recognized structure.

Station opened in 1912.

A new roller coaster opened in 1914. It is known as the Rutschebanen, or as some people call it, Bjergbanen (The Mountain Coaster). It is today one of the world’s oldest wooden roller coasters and one of just 7 worldwide operated by a brakeman on each train.

There are now 4 roller coasters in the park and 2 water rides as well as 13 other “adult” rides and 16 “children’s rides.” The newest ride is Fatamorgana, which opened in 2016. This ride “offers two separate seating arrangements, one milder version with two-seater gondolas, and a thrilling version in which riders are slung around at high speed while seated in a ring and facing away from the center.”

Cafes and restaurants have changed as people’s tastes have changed. By my count there are around 60 places to get food in Tivoli. No matter how many kroner you have to buy food and pretty much no matter what satisfies your appetite, Tivoli can meet your needs.

World War II brought destruction to Tivoli.

The night of June 24, 1944 Nazi sympathizers sneaked into the garden and placed fire bombs in the Concert Hall, The Glass Hall and the Arena in addition to other locations. There was extensive damage. The Arena Theater was destroyed and a new dance hall, Dansetten was built in its place in 1948. The Concert hall was also destroyed and musical events moved to the Glass Hall Theatre until a new concert hall was built in 1956.

Determined not to let the Nazi’s triumph, within two weeks Tivoli was again open.

Visits to Tivoli have greatly impressed people. Walt Disney paid several visits to Tivoli before opening Disneyland in California. It is said that after Michael Jackson visited Tivoli he wanted to buy it. His offer was not accepted.

In 1952 The Alley opened. Built like a Danish market town it offers some shopping for visitors. New expansions, renovations and additions continue in Tivoli. Formerly only open in the summer, since 1994 it has been open for the Christmas season. Since the opening of Tivoli for a Halloween season, the attendance has increased every year. In celebration of the 175th year in operation, in 2018 Tivoli added the Win-

ter Season in the month of February. The summer season runs from the beginning of April to sometime in late September.

Entertainment continues to be a big part of the Tivoli experience. It is a venue for a variety of the performing arts and is an important part of the cultural life of Copenhagen. From classical music, to rock and roll, from pantomime to ballet, from band concerts to American country music and jazz, all can be found in Tivoli.

Hear the word amusement park and for anyone who has not been to Tivoli, something totally different comes to mind. But Tivoli is a very different experience. Go early and you just might be in time to catch a bit of dew on the thousands of beautiful flowers. Find a seat in one of the many cozy corners and you have found a place to relax and let the world go by. Jump on some of the rides and experience the thrills of whirling and flying or dropping. Get on the ferris wheel and get a spectacular high view of Copenhagen. Walk amid the free-range peacocks and enjoy the age-old theater of pantomime.

Stay until evening and watch the 120,000 lights of Tivoli come on, turning the park into a visual delight. On weekends stay for the fireworks.

Whatever you do, it will supply you with memories for a lifetime.

When Carstensen sold the idea of Tivoli to the King, it was as a way to distract the people from politics.

Little did he know how very much we would need a place like Tivoli to distract us in the 21st century. If you have never been—don’t hesitate—go.

The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available:
