Sindy Mikkelsen, National President It has been a long time coming, four years to be exact, but once again I am writing my final President’s article. It was a very unusual set of circumstances that resulted in me serving as National President, and hopefully never repeats itself. It’s a lot of work to be on the National Board and our membership deserves fresh thoughts and ideas. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy to have been given this opportunity, a total of 16 years of service, and I can’t imagine a better group of dedicated Sisters to have finished my time with on the Board. Lizette Burtis did a very fine job leading us last term and truly set this Board up for success.

In reflection of this term I am required to recall and report on our accomplishments, which was really nice to do as I believe we had many important successes. Right off the top, our biggest successes were:

• Transfer of the Sisterhood historical data and artifacts from Santa Rosa to Elkhorn. This was very timely in preserving our history considering the major fires that consumed so much of Santa Rosa less than 2 years later.

• We hosted two trips to Denmark (2016 & 2018) netting the Sisterhood approximately $30,000 in revenue.

• The Angel Membership Status was created, allowing generous members to obtain this exclusive status by donating back to the Sisterhood their funeral benefits or by donating $1000.

• Established the Disaster Relief Fund to aid our members in time of need due to extreme situations such as natural disasters.

• Hosting this National Convention.

I feel very proud of the work this team has accomplished and know the efforts made will keep the Sisterhood strong into the future.

There are a few of us that will be saying farewell this term, which is bitter sweet. Our family and friends need us, as do our local lodges, all of which sacrifice so that we can serve our membership. We will miss all of you and the roles we played, but know that from time to time at future events we shall meet once more. Not to mention, we’re all still available by email and good old fashioned snail mail. I also want to thank those of you that opened your homes, offered rides and helped this Board in so many kind ways, which we greatly appreciated.

And lastly, thank you for allowing me to serve as your National President, it was truly my honor.

Youth Birthdays

Autumn always feels a little bitter sweet. Its arrival brings the end of summer and starts ushering us towards winter, but it also brings us cool breezes, crisp air, campfires to sit around, blankets to cuddle under, and apples pies baking in the oven...amongst other things.

This autumn is especially bitter sweet as we say goodbye to our National Board of the last four years and welcome in a new board. I’m excited to meet the new Board that will be elected come the October Convention.

But I am also sad to say goodbye to our current Board–the one and only Board that I’ve worked with in my role as Editor of the DSN. The members of this Board have become dear friends in addition to being sisters. They immediately welcomed me to my role, helped me understand the ins and outs of the Sisterhood, had patience with me while working on deadlines, laughed with me about more things than we could probably count and supported me as a sister and as the Editor. I would like to thank them for all of their hard work these past 4 years.

They’ll be missed!

However, I know that with their leaving of their current positions, they will be going back to their chapters to help and to lead, to lend support and share in a little bit (or a lot!) of laughter.

And I know, since we are all sisters, we’ll all keep in touch!

As for the new incoming Board, I’m looking forward to meeting new faces and working with a new group of sisters.

Hansen It was named after danish astronomer, nobleman and writer Tyge Alesen Brahe (1546-1601). The building was designed by architect Knud Munk and opened its doors 1 November 1989. There you can see anything from the stars, space, galaxies to deep in the ocean in the IMAX theatre. Experience other inactive 3D movies as well. The newest exhibit called “made in space” started in 2018. There is so much to see and enjoy for all ages and open everyday.

Danish Children Growing Up American The exhibit “Danish Children Growing Up American” opens September 24, 2019, on the first floor of Criss Library on the campus of the University of Nebraska Omaha.

The exhibit, “Danish Children Growing Up American,” features dozens of photographs from the Danish American Archive and Library (DAAL) along with artifacts from the Washington County Historical Museum’s collection. The exhibit runs from September 24 through November 1, 2019.

The exhibit allows visitors to walk into the world of Danish immigrant children at the turn of the 20th century as presented on twenty 8-foot tall panels. The exhibit shows immigration both to and from Denmark, children at play, the clothes and costumes children wore, life on the farm, religious life, and education.

August Sisterhood Meeting Hello from Lodge #20. On August 24 our Lodge celebrated our 127th Anniversary. The original plan was a Potluck Picnic, but weather concerns put that plan out of our reach. We quickly moved our celebration to a local restaurant. Eighteen members and guests joined together at the Fireside in Kenosha for the celebration.

Bette Lasch, our President was presented with her 10 year pin by Majbritt Andersen-Stewart.

Majbritt talked about Bette’s Danish background and about her journey in the Sisterhood. Faden Fulley-Love Krause, who was unable to attend, also will be receiving her 10 year pin.

We each ordered what we wanted to eat and paid for their own meal. Friendship and fellowship was enjoyed by all.

DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels� posted.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you would be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category are welcome to participate by donating $1000 to the Danish Sisterhood, which can be sent to the National Treasurer.

Updates from Flora Danica Lodge 177, Solvang, CA After a summer break in June and July our lodge gathered together in August to review our annual community giving and begin working on some of the crafts we’ll be selling in our Danish Days booth, our major fundraiser of the year.

We are proud to announce that our Flora Danica #177 donated nearly $2,000 to over a dozen community organizations and projects this year.

In addition, District Past President Donna Andersen Ineman presented three scholarships at the annual high school senior awards ceremony to Ben Nielsen ($700), Keller Haws ($500) and Christiana Heron - who served as the 2018 Danish Maid - ($500).

News from Lodge #3, Davenport, IA Lodge #3 Davenport, Iowa was happy to hear from our member Ruth Krishnan and news of her recent move from MN to Colorado. Ruth also updated us with news of her daughter, Sonya Krishnan, who received the Danish Sisterhood scholarship in 2008 toward her studies. She completed her Undergraduate degree in 2010 and then worked 2 years at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD in research. Sonya earned her medical degree in 2016 from George Washington Medical School and completed a 3 year residency in Internal Medicine this June, 2019 at Johns Hopkins Hospital and University in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Sonya Krishnan is now practicing medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital while specializing in Infectious Medicine, pursuing a fellowship. Our Lodge #3 members were so happy that Sonya received the scholarship money back in 2008 and we are so thankful that she has continued her education, which has benefited so many people with her knowledge of Infectious Medicine. We thank Ruth for updating us on Sonya’s career and for their appreciation of the Danish Sisterhood scholarship all those years ago.

On August 8th we were thrilled to have Brian and Karina Sand and their 2 children, Noah 4 and Viola 6 months of Copenhagen, Denmark, join us for our monthly Lodge #3 meeting. The Sands are relatives of members Doris, Jerry and Judy Johansen and it was very special meeting the Sands and hearing of their life in Denmark. The Oldest Amusement Park—Not what you May Think Ask a Danish tourist their favorite place in Copenhagen and chances are the answer will be Tivoli. They will probably even tell you it is the oldest amusement park in the world.

If that is what they tell you, they are close to being right. Tivoli is by far the most famous amusement park in Denmark, but the oldest is not Tivoli. Tivoli is the second oldest, begun in 1843. So where is the oldest? It is also in Denmark. It is Dyrehavsbakken, located about 6 miles north of Copenhagen in Klampenborg.

Yes, that is correct, the two oldest operating amusement parks are both in Denmark.

But where else would you expect to find them than in a country that since the World Happiness Report first began in 2012 has been in the top three every year and often number one?

On my first trip to Denmark in 1960 I was lucky enough to spend time at both parks. While I am familiar with both, I knew very little of their histories. It turns out they both have histories worth looking into.

Dyrehavsbakken, more commonly referred to by the Danes as Bakken (The Hill), is said to have “opened” in 1583. According to legend it was in that year that a devout Christian woman name Kirsten Piil found a spring on this land.

Springs play a big part in Danish history even in the history of the Norse gods. Early man would bathe in springs at the time of the summer solstice, believing the springs had special powers.

By the time Kirsten found this spring, Midsummer had become a festival dedicated to John the Baptist (Sankt Hans) to celebrate his birthday (June 24) and the special powers of the spring were thought to be extra potent on that date.

The spring attracted people from nearby Copenhagen. Some came because they were sick and looking to be cured by the healing powers of the water. Others came for the clean fresh water not readily available to medieval cities. Regardless of why people journeyed to the spring, many, many people came. Of course wherever there are crowds, there is money to be made. Traders, performers and menageries

soon made camp near the spring and opened for business in what came to be called a “spring market.” It is the site of that spring market that is now known as Dyrehavsbakken. Today it is visited by more than 2.5 million visitors a year.

In 1669 King Frederick III fenced in about three square kilometers north of Copenhagen including the land with the spring. At that time, the population of deer in Denmark was falling.

It was common to fence in game in animal parks to ensure sufficient deer for hunting. Drives were held throughout Northern Sjelland to drive the deer into the park. It is said the royal household alone consumed 1,000 deer per year.

With the death of King Frederick, his son, Christian V expanded the hunting park, making it 5 times larger. He added sika deer to the population of red and fallow deer living in Sjelland.

While visiting the French court of Louis X!V, he was introduced to parforce hunting. In parforce hunting, 20-30 hunters on horseback, with blaring hunting horns and howling dogs, chase down a single red deer until it is so exhausted that the most aristocratic person among the hunters can walk up to the deer and kill it with a finishing strike using a short hunting sword. This type of hunting requires space, and therefore King Christian V enlarged the area.

The land remained in the control of the monarchy and off limits to the public until 1756 when King Frederick V again made it public land.

The business owners used publicity to draw more and more people. Cabarets were add in the last quarter of the 1800’s. In 1877 the Bakken Hvile music hall opened. In the 20th century moving rides were added as well as the Circus Revue, a live circus style performance.

Throughout medieval Europe most cities had featured something similar to Dyrehavsbakken. They were know as “pleasure gardens” and featured entertainment, fireworks, dancing games and a primitive form of amusement rides.

Most them them closed down in the 1700’s, but Bakken remains.

In 1932 Bakken got its first major thrill ride, the Rutschebanen, a classic wooden roller coster still running today. The park now has 6 roller coasters, ferris wheels, drop towers etc. In fact the park has 32 rides—more than any other amusement park in Scandinavia.

In addition to the rides, there are seven gaming halls with carnival-style games, slot machines and dancing. In addition to the music hall, live musical performances can be found in lounges and bars across the park. It is also home to dozens of restaurants for all pocket books.

Food can be purchased from street vendors and buffets to fancy white-table cloth restaurants.

Choices range from pølser and hamburgers to open-faced sandwiches to international cuisine.

All in all it is said to have 150 attractions.

Bakken is open daily from the end of March through the end of August. Entrance to the park is free, but rides and attractions will cost you some kroner.

With all the many changes that have occurred to Dyrehavsbakken over the years most visitors comment on the “old-world atmosphere”

The area once again drew people to the beautiful landscape and fresh water. And once again the tradesmen, entertainers and artists were drawn to area. The place is said to have gained popularity throughout Europe. It is around this time that a clown known as Pjerrot came to Dyrehavsbakken. He remains a featured attraction to this day.

The park continued to grow, even during the Napoleonic Wars and eventually, aided by the development steam ships and railroads in the 1800’s, drew more and more people.

As it grew, conditions in the park began to deteriorate. The “tent owners” as the business men in the park were called, formed the Dyrehavsbakken Tent Owners Association in 1885.

Garbage collection and restroom facilities were added. The water supply was improved and electricity came to the park. The Association still exists and all business in the park are required to join.

of the place. There you may find those rides you have not seen since you were a kid. Don’t expect to find big name brands or flashy neon lights there. Both are forbidden. Talk with some who have been there and you may hear words like “nostalgic”, historic ambiance”, or “authentic Danish charm.” Dyrehavsbakken has a slogan.

It is, “Der er noget om snadkken, der er dejligt på Bakken.” Loosely translated, “There is something to the talk. Bakken is lovely.” I have to admit, my memories of that first visit almost 60 years ago are all happy and still bring a smile to my face.

But perhaps amusement parks are not your “thing”. You should still go. Around the park and north of it you can stroll or ride in a horse drawn hackney carriage (kaffemøller) thourgh the royal hunting ground. Kaffemøller means “coffee mill”. The name comes from a time when the people of Copenhagen used them to drive to the coffee houses and bars at Bakken.

There you can see wild deer, a herd of around 2000 still live in the park. The landscape unlike much of Denmark is beautifully hilly. Atop Eremitagesletten there is a small palace known as the Hermitage. It was build by King Christian VI . The palace belongs to the Danish state.

They lend it to Dronning Margrethe II who hosts lunches there fairly often. It is closed to the public but worth viewing from the outside.

A number of very ancient trees can be found in the area. The Skovfogedegen (The Forester Oak) is the oldest tree in Jægersbord Dyrehave.

It is hollow and is believed to be around 850 years old, meaning that it was already growing when the Danish Archbishop Absalon founded Copenhagen. Englænderegen is known as the The Old English Oak. It is also very old and almost died a couple hundred years ago, but when an English soldier from the 1807 siege of Copenhagen was dying, he confessed that he helped kill the treasurer of his regiment and that they had stolen a box containing the soldier’s wages and buried it by this tree. A treasure hunt began.

The digging exposed the roots which then began to send up new shoots. The tree was saved.

No treasure was found.

One more old tree is known as Ulvedalsegen, The Wolf Valley Oak This tree is around 600-700 years old. Around 100 years ago it began to die. People began to put on large theatrical performances in the area and it was necessary to open land by digging around the tree.

Just like Englænderegen, it sprouted back to life.

Hawthorne, like the oaks, is characteristic of the area. The trees bloom in late May and for some people it has become a tradition to dress in white like the hawthorne blossoms and go on a picnic the first Saturday in June. Most of the hawthorns are self-sown except for those near Taarbækstien (Taarbæk path). In that area is an anonymous mass grave for the victims of the great plague epidemics in Copenhagen in the 17th and 18th centuries. The planted hawthorns with their sharp thorns safeguard the grave.

Of course as you explore this beautiful area you are sure to see some of the many deer.

Hardly anywhere else in the world is it possible to get so close to wild red, fallow and sika deer.

You may want to think of this area as natures amusement park. Whether it is to ride the roller coaster or to picnic in the beautiful green hills, this part of Denmark is worth a visit.

So this is the history of the oldest amusement park in the world. Hopefully one day you can visit if you have not already. If you have been there I hope it brings back happy memories as researching Dyrehavsbakken has done for me.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipients of the Betty Hansen Scholarship

Casey Oconnor My passions for art have continued to exponentially develop and expand over the years with the generosity, love and support of my friends, family and the communities I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of. I have developed a desire to expand my interests and utilize a variety of mediums including woodworking, oil, acrylic, gauche, egg tempera and watercolor paintings, sculpture, ceramics, animations, photography and filmmaking to better understand art and all that there is to offer with it.

Over time I began to notice the therapeutic benefits to different forms of art and the expression each allows as an outlet for different stressors, traumas and/or repressed emotions, both on myself and others. This discovery combined with a strong desire to help others since a young age encouraged me to find a way to aid in the recovery of those who may be struggling in a variety of ways to break through mental barriers, especially those blocked off by past traumas through art, which led me to find the perfect career path. I chose to attend school at the satellite campus of Pratt Institute, PrattMWP in Utica, N.Y. for 2 years, and after having finished the program there, I will now be attending at the main campus in Brooklyn in the fall in order to obtain my Bachelors degree in fine arts, painting, with a minor in psychology with plans to continue my education and earn my Masters degree in art therapy where I can only hope to change some lives while utilizing my passion.

Bergen Evans Hello! My name is Bergen Evans and I was born and raised in Colorado.

Throughout my life I found many activities that pertained to my interest.

Those including skiing, snowboarding, hiking, tennis, and many more that Colorado has to offer. Although, my love for the outdoors is incomparable to my interest and dedication toward my education. In high school I fell in love with my math and science classes, as they challenged me while also being a never-ending pit of knowledge. This led me to my interest in a career in medicine. Starting this fall, I plan to major in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado Boulder. I am very appreciative for the support I have received that’s brought me to where I am today. My grandmother in particular was actually the person whom introduced me to the Danish Sisterhood.

Growing up I always knew I had heritage linked to Denmark, and I have been going to sisterhood meetings with my grandmother since I was in middle school. I officially became a member in 2017 and I am beyond grateful for the people I have had the honor of meeting as well as the opportunities that came present. I am honored to have received the Betty Hansen National Scholarship and look forward to what my future has to bring.

Recipients of the Betty Hansen Scholarship (Cont.)

Jacob Thorlund Rasmussen My name is Jacob Thorlund Rasmussen and I would like to thank The Danish Sisterhood of America very much for the Betty Hansen National Scholarship and the Past National Officers’ Scholarship. I will be attending Michigan State University in pursuit of a four-year Animal Science degree.

My Danish heritage comes from both sides of my family. My parents and grandparents have been involved in Danish Sisterhood and Danish Brotherhood throughout the years and our community hosts a huge Danish Festival every August.

I have participated in 4-H for nine years which cultivated my passion for animals. My dedication and experiences associated with animals has confirmed to me that I am selecting the right choice in my career and educational decision. At my house I have alpacas, cats, sheep, pigs,

cattle, and dogs.

While participating in many high school sports I have learned many valuable lessons about being a leader and how to work well with a team. Coaches have taught me to set high goals which I have only been able to achieve through hard work and determination. My academics have resulted in a GPA over 3.8/4.0 while taking challenging classes including five Advanced Placement classes. My sport activities have included: varsity football (three years), varsity track (four years), varsity bowling (one year), and varsity ski racing (one year). I have received academic All-State in track and honorable mention academic All-State in football. Annually I help on the local road run raising funds for wellness grants at our school.

Hannah Funk Hannah Funk is a rising senior at Georgetown University majoring in Culture and Politics and minoring in Latin American Studies. On campus, Hannah is involved in the environmental club and community garden, and works as an intern in the Office of Sustainability and an Assistant Teacher at the daycare. Hannah loves to travel, learn new languages, and spend time outdoors, and was delighted to spend the fall semester of 2018 studying abroad in São Paulo, Brazil. This summer, Hannah is working as an intern at the U.S. Department of State. Hannah is originally from Bristol, Vermont, and is proud to be the older sister of another Betty Hansen Scholarship recipient, Molly Funk!

Molly Funk Molly Funk grew up in Bristol, Vermont with parents Tom and Elizabeth, and sisters Hannah and Louisa. Molly is currently a Sophomore at Boston College studying environmental studies and political science. Molly enjoys painting, hiking, baking and exploring Boston. On campus, Molly is a member of BC’s environmental action group, is involved with women’s mentorship, and works in the campus vegetable garden. In the future she hopes to pursue a career in law or policy related to environmental justice.

Will Jarvis Will Jarvis was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 2001 and grew up in Wisconsin Dells. The son of a Danish and German mother and a French and Native American father, Will is grateful for the distinction awarded to him by the Danish Sisterhood. Will plans to attend Oberlin College in Ohio in the fall with desires to study astronomy and physics.

Throughout his life, Will has played multiple sports including hockey and baseball. Since injuries forced his exit from athletics, Will has become an avid musician and leader first in the Wisconsin Dells High School Band and later as both lead trumpet and percussionist at Madison Country Day School. Will also helped to lead the Model United Nations club at Madison Country Day School while balancing an extremely rigorous International Baccalaureate education program. His other pursuits include fishing, following and engaging in political discourse, and studying world history and philosophy.

In July, Will plans to attend the Pulsar Search Collaboratory Camp, a weeklong experience where he will operate the 100 meter Green Bank Observatory telescope and conduct radio astronomy research into rare forms of dying stars.

Over the summer, Will has also been working as a docent and caretaker for the Number Two Core Module for the Russian Mir Space Station at the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory in Wisconsin Dells.

Will is very thankful to the Danish Sisterhood for this scholarship and hopes that he may continue to become more involved with his Danish past as he enters a new phase in his life.

RESOLUTION The members of Lodge #3 Davenport, Iowa, are saddened by the loss of our member Leota R. Christensen on 8-27-2019 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Chesterfield, MO.

Leota was born on May 20, 1928 in Fenton, IL, the daughter of Matthew and Sylvia (Dyson) Swanson.

She married Carl A. Christensen on March 2, 1956 in Rock Island, IL. He preceded her in death. Leota and Carl were strong and active members of the Danish Brotherhood and Sisterhood.

Leota had received her 50 year pin from the Danish Sisterhood earlier this year. She joined the Sisterhood on 4-6-1969 and had held offices of President and Vice-President over the years.

Leota is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Michael) McDonald and Linette (James) Mohrmann, both of MO and grandson, Adam Mohrmann, and five siblings. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Rock Island, IL.
