Summer is now over, and fall is closing in. It was fantastic to end the summer on such a high note with the institution of the new lodge in Enumclaw, WA. I, and many others had the pleasure of being there to experience the historic moment. To be the National President, presiding over such an important event is the ultimate reward for this work. I was truly honored to be able to be in that role. This new lodge as a “cozy” lodge, and lives up to their name “Hygge”.

They embrace traditions, the order of business, and all the wonderful ritual. I think we have a group that will really grow and enjoy the Sisterhood in every way possible.

By the time you read this, I and about 46 others will be well into the Sisterhood Denmark Tour for 2018. I have no doubt that this trip will be as good, or better than all the prior tours. I’m super excited to be on this one, as one of the highlights will be going to the island of Bornholm. You will likely be seeing many of us post on our Facebook page as the tour progresses. Additionally, National Vice President, Julie Morrison is on the tour, so I’m sure the Sisterhood Facebook page will have updates as well.

When we return we will be in full swing in preparation for our Fall Board Meeting. We will be meeting in Omaha, working out the details with the hosting hotel for the 2019 National Convention. Just think, it’s only 1 year away!!! As usual, we are an open Board. If you have comments, concerns, ideas, or just want to send a greeting, please don’t hesitate to email it to me. I guarantee we will read it at our Board meeting. Your thoughts are important to us, so please do let us know what you’re thinking.

Velkommen

Dear Sisters, Today it is raining outside. It’s actually a very nice temperature outside–just a light jacket needed and the rain is falling softly. It reminds me of the last time I was in Denmark, about 3 years ago in October.

When I was there, my cousin brought me along to her friends’ housewarming party, however, the house wasn’t built yet! They had the frame of the house built and were having a grillout in the middle of it–pØlser and all! It was quite rainy that night, but we had a great time. It was a really fun and unique experience, one that I’ll never forget.

I think we should all remember to try some new experiences, and remember the ones that we’ve already been a part of. Share that story with a friend or family member. And maybe, try starting a unique kind of get-together–it may just become a tradition!

I hope you all are enjoying these fall months before winter sets in and I hope you’re enjoying the DSN! Please be sure to send in your stories, ideas, photos, and more.

NEW LODGE NEWS Danish Sisterhood of America Gathering to Charter Hygge Lodge #188 August 25, 2018 Enumclaw, WA

We will maintain a supportive atmosphere of mutual respect, honesty and caring concern for one another at all times.

Officers are President Sandra Parker, Vice President Karen Hoylman, Secretary Sandra Nelson, Treasurer Karin Plagens, Trustees (3) Joan Brown, Carol Hoiland, Diane Busch, and Marshal Jean Hoiland. Six Dual members and five Amber members were initiated. In addition, through a grandmother and a great grandmother, we now have 2 youth members.

Four national officers, past and present, were in attendance as well as 3 district officers. Following the program, refreshments that included akavait and sparkling cider were enjoyed.

We look forward to gathering in Hygge throughout the coming years!

Twenty members and friends gathered at the Enumclaw (WA) Plateau Historical Society Museum on Aug. 25, 2018 to charter the newest DSS lodge. National President Sindy Mikkelsen proclaimed the Institution of Hygge Lodge#188 by signing the charter and proceeded to the initiation of members and the installation of officers.

The Mission of Hygge #188 is to enhance and increase our understanding and appreciation of Danish heritage, traditions and culture.

The Vision if Hygge #188 is to fulfill our mission through a variety of activities and programs which may also benefit the community at large.

Northstar Lodge Update The Northstar Lodge #100 met on August 15, 2018, at Kelly Joy’s Restaurant in Lakeport with seven members and two guests present. The only order of business was to cancel our Sept. and Oct. meetings and plan to meet on November 14th at Hope Lutheran Church at noon. We will plan to bring our hats and mittens to that meeting to donate to the Department of Human Services. Thank you to Joyce Houck for acting as hostess and gifting us our meals.

News from Princess Marie Lodge 86 Philadelphia, PA

On June 16 we traveled to Inge Olsen’s home in Havre de Grace, MD. The business meeting included correspondence from Frihed Lodge #153 Hartford, CT inviting us to the 91st EGC convention to be held on April 5-7 2019. The location is the Courtyard by Marriott in Windsor CT. This hotel is just off I-91 and is convenient to the Hartford/Springfield Airport (Bradley). More information will be provided in the fall.

Since our members are spread out from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to Delaware and Maryland, we have often thought it would be easier for the drivers if we had a place favorably located in which to hold our lodge meetings, something akin to a restaurant, church hall, or community center. Of course, space to rent can be costly; still, it is a good

consideration. I wonder how other lodges have dealt with this issue.

The Highlight of our lodge meeting was the initiation ceremony of Hanne Karman into Lodge 86. Hanne was escorted by Suzy Boyle and presented to President Inge Olsen and Vice-President Eve Kramp for initiation into our lodge. We began the ceremony with cheers and applause as Suzy escorted Hanne into the meeting. Inge led Hanne through the ceremony with a series of questions and a loyalty pledge. Hanne is a wonderful addition to our lodge family! All of us welcomed Hanne into our lodge and look forward to seeing Hanne at our meetings.

What is the password?

When I think of secret societies, things like the DaVinci Code come to mind: Ancient secrets kept hidden for centuries. People willing to go to battle to keep their secrets hidden. This, of course, is the extreme.

There are other secret societies - the Freemasons, student societies like Yale’s Skulls and Bones, and. . . the Danish Sisterhood of America. You may ask what made the Danish Sisterhood a secret society? Well, let’s take a look.

While we have not hidden our membership from non-members, there are aspects that were carefully guarded, such as the contents of meetings.

Do you know the function of the guard position? I thought it was just a ceremonial title until I went to our California District Convention. The guard actually stood guard at the door. There were originally two guards at meetings. If you’ve ever been to one of our Danish halls, you may notice two doors to the meeting room -- The guards also controlled entry through the use of a password, which had to be given to each of the guards for entry into a meeting. And who can forget the secret handshakes? Yep, we had those, too. If you speak to members who have been around a while, they will remember them.

Another interesting historical fact revolves around membership approval. At one time membership in a Lodge was voted on. Each current member was given a chance to cast their vote into a wooden box. There were white marbles and black marbles.

White meant “yes” and black meant “no.” A single “no” vote excluded the person from membership.

This type of voting is where the term blackballing comes from. One black ball and you are out. Some of your lodges may have one of these boxes. My lodge had one, but sent it to the Danish American Museum to be preserved and archived. Lodge 1 in Negaunee, Michigan has one. Karin Wasler took video of how it was used while visiting with the lodge.

The more I learn about our Danish Sisterhood’s history, the more interesting I realize our organization is. Perhaps you know another interesting fact about our Sisterhood. Perhaps someone in your lodge has been around long enough to know things like secret handshakes and passwords. I hope you will talk to each other about our traditions, both past and present. It is our connection to our history that keeps us together in the present and keeps our Sisterhood vital.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipient of the Betty Hansen Scholarship & the Past National Officer Scholarship

Kurt Beehler Hello, my name is Kurt Beehler and I am a 5th generation Dane currently living in Solvang, CA. My great great Grandfather was one of the beginning settlers of Solvang in 1911, and my family has been fortunate enough to stay here in this great Danish community. This year I will be graduating from the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School. During these past four years in high school I have been involved with a variety of clubs and extra curricular activities. For the past nine years I have been involved with our local Lucky Clover 4-h group showing pigs and working my way through the offices to serve as President my Senior Year. I have also been involved with our YMCA’s Youth and Government club and our high school varsity tennis team. Coming fall of 2018, I will be attending California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA. I will be majoring in Exercise Science. In the future, I plan on working for a professional sports team as an Athletic Trainer. I would like to thank all of you so much for this very generous scholarship. It is very much appreciated!

Matthew Bieber My name is Matthew Bieber and I was born and raised in Dunwoody, Georgia. I grew up a dual citizen of the USA & of Denmark, and being Danish has had a great impact on my life so far. I have visited Denmark multiple times to see friends and family, so I still keep strong connections to my Danish roots. I currently attend the University of Georgia, studying International Business & Finance as well as German. In the Terry College of Business and the Moore Honors College at UGA, I have been challenged so far to show what I can bring to the world. Over the years, I have been involved at my temple, in scouts, and through various clubs around my high school and college. At my temple, I worked in the Sunday School as an assistant teacher for over 5 years. In scouts, I attended Troop 477 of Dunwoody and earned the rank of Eagle Scout; I also served as a troop guide and den chief there. Now in college, I am a member of Tau Epsilon Phi Fraternity and I am on the executive board for The Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research.

This year – between my sophomore and junior years of college – I am interning at Wealthy Habits, an organization for teaching local Atlanta youth about financial literacy and responsibility. Both my Mormor and Mor are members of the Danish Sisterhood, and so I am proud to be recognized by this organization.

Recipients of the Betty Hansen Scholarship (Cont.)

Daphne Ford My name is Daphne Ford and I’m from Panama City, Florida. I am going into my sophomore year at the University of Florida studying Marketing and Event Management, and I am proud of my Danish heritage and am honored to receive the Betty Hansen National Scholarship!

I enjoy staying very involved on campus at the University of Florida through leadership and volunteering roles with my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, along with Swamp Records which aids the music industry of Gainesville, Florida.

I also have a passion for traveling. I recently returned from a six week study abroad program in Florence, Italy. I hope to be able to explore Denmark on my next adventure.

I am very appreciative of the Betty Hansen National Scholarship, as it allows me to continue my studies and gives me more free time to volunteer at local schools with Girls on the Run, my sorority’s philanthropy which works to empower young women. I am also excited to volunteer and run Ganguli Music and Arts Festival, which benefits teen suicide awareness and helps the music industry of Panama City.

Words cannot entirely describe how much this scholarship will help myself and the lives I work to touch through my involvement. In this coming school year, I hope to expand my activities on and off campus even more and I plan on adding a touch of my Danish heritage in everything I do throughout my journey. Thank you for this generous opportunity!

Tiffany Geistkemper To the Danish Sisterhood of America, thank you very much for your support and this prestigious award! I am honored to have been selected a recipient of the Betty Hanson National Scholarship.

My name is Tiffany Geistkemper. I just completed high school at Naperville North High School, which is located in a suburb of Chicago. I love taking care of animals, knitting, traveling, and watching sports.

I aspire to become a veterinarian, and I am attending Iowa State University in the fall of 2018 to pursue this career. I will be an undergraduate student majoring in animal science. The Betty Hansen National Scholarship will allow me to further my education and accomplish my goal of becoming a veterinarian.

I have been fortunate to visit Denmark, from Copenhagen in the east to Ringkobing (where my great, great grandmother was born) in the west. My father studied abroad in Denmark when he was in college, and we are all still friends with his host family. They visit us in the United States often, and we visit them in Denmark as well.

Thank you again for this award, which will help me pursue my passion in working and helping animals.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipients of the Betty Hansen Scholarship (Cont.)

Megan MacGregor My name is Megan MacGregor and I just completed my freshman year at the University of San Diego. I am proud to be a member of two Danish Sisterhood Lodges: the Margrethe Lodge #24 in San Francisco and the Princess Marie Lodge #68 in Los Angeles. At my university, I have pursued my interests in Spanish and International Relations while maintaining a 3.85 GPA. Outside of school, I served as the founder and president of the Women’s Club Water Polo team and competed on the Ultimate Frisbee team. I also joined the Missions A Residence Hall Council and worked as a Torero Ambassador in order to introduce prospective students to USD and to represent our community in a positive manner. Additionally, I became an initiated member of Kappa Delta sorority and was selected for the Spring 2018 Recruitment Committee. I also enjoy volunteering at the Rigsby Language and Culture Commons as a Spanish tutor. San Diego is such a beautiful and vibrant city to attend school in and I have enjoyed living here. When I’m not studying or playing water polo, I enjoy going to the beach, spending time with my older sister, and exploring coffee shops and restaurants in the area. I am blessed to attend such an incredible university with so many opportunities and thankful to be a part of the Danish Sisterhood. I appreciate your continued support that allows me to attend my dream school. I am looking forward to an amazing sophomore year!

Melissa Sallee My name is Melissa Sallee and I’ve been a member of the Danish Sisterhood for 13 years. I have volunteered at many DSS events and fundraisers such as the Scandinavian fair and have been known as the master froster of kransekage stykker. Halfway through high school I went to early college so I could get a head start on my college education. I am currently a Junior at the University of Oregon with a completed Associates of Business transfer degree, and I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese. I have always been extremely passionate about Japanese language and culture as I have studied it for almost 8 years. I hope to have a career that will allow me to use it every day. My hobbies include admiring all different types of art forms from painting to music, writing, global politics, and cultural traditions; and binge watching my favorite tv series over and over again. I love the outdoors and all animals, especially dogs!

I like to keep my mind open for different ideas and perspectives because there are 7 billion people in the world with thousands of ideas of their own. I strongly believe in treating life with kindness. In the future I intend to go to a university in Japan and study Internet Technology (IT) so I can connect America and Japan through computer security and future technology. Hopefully I can do this before the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan so I can become an interpreter for Americans who want to visit over the summer and/or our American athletes.

Resolution Winifred La Rayne (Cavnar) Jergensen passed away on August 21st, 2018. Winnie was born in Denver, Colorado, on September 23rd, 1922. Winnie was of Scottish-Irish heritage but she always said “I am Danish by marriage”. Winnie married her high school sweet heart Ivan Roy Jergensen on June 7th, 1941.

She and her husband Ivan had four children, Gerald (Jerry), Cherylyn (Sus), Johnny and Richard (Rick). She also had 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Her life was full and she loved life.

Winnie joined the Danish Sisterhood Ellen Lodge 21 on June 23rd, 1995, and remained a member for 23 years. Winnie was so much fun to be with as she had a great sense of humor and could tell jokes that had us all laughing. When she was still living in Commerce City, she would let the Lodge use her garage for our garage sales. We sure had a lot of fun with those sales. At these sales, Winnie would often spot some pretty blue things, which she then had to have. Winnie loved the color blue, including the blue Colorado Columbine flower. Winnie participated in as many monthly meetings with Ellen Lodge 21 as possible. Her daughter-in-law, Tita, who is also a member of Ellen Lodge 21, would bring Winnie whenever possible. Tita would also bring Winnie to our craft sessions where we made Christmas craft and she would help with painting the little wooden items.

Well, it often didn’t stop at the wooden items as Winnie would paint her nails in red and green as well.

She was a hoot, always full of life and smiles! Winnie’s son Rick would also bring Winnie to the yearly Scandinavian Christmas Craft Fair, where she would love to shop and chat with her Ellen Lodge Sisters. I am certain that there are many more stories to tell about our Sister Winnie. I was fortunate to have known Winnie for nine years and for that I am very grateful.

Winnie was a very special lady, she would light up a room with her presence and she was always a joy to be with.

Sister Winnie gave so much to so many including to our Lodge. She will be greatly missed.

We all extend our sympathy to her family in this time of sorrow and remembrance.
