Congratulations to the new National Board, I wish them a fantastic term.

Time flies when you are having fun!

It is hard for me to believe that 4 years have gone by and that our term has come to an end.

During the last 4 years there have been changes and challenges we were not prepared for, but quickly adapted to, and I cannot thank my fellow Board members enough for seeing this through with me.

I do not know if you realize that being on the Board can be very challenging when you do not know your other Board members, let alone all of our little quirks. Sure, it is fun and you get to travel, but also challenging and stressful.

If you see a current or former Board member, thank them for volunteering to do their best for our organization.

I want to thank Nealna Gylling, Linda Brooks, Glenda Madrid, Linda Holz, Anna Nielsen, Karen Vig-Keathley and Karin Wasler for being on the Board, and giving their heart, souls and brainpower to making the Sisterhood better. I also want to thank our editor Lauren Nielsen who was always gracious when I did not meet the deadline, and who pulled off many miracles. We are all very lucky to have her. A Thank you as well to our Historian Donna Thomas who wrote articles for us and pointed out interesting fact about Denmark, the Sisterhood and famous Danes.

Dear Sisters, By the time you're reading this issue, Convention will have come and gone and we'll have a brand new Board! We'll also have some bylaw changes and other updates from our delegates.

Stay tuned in the November issue for more updates from all that happened at Convention.

For all our outgoing Board members, I want to express my thanks for all the hard work they've done to keep our organization running for the past four years. It has been a pleasure working with this Board and I look forward to working with the next!

News from Lodge #102, Des Moines We did not meet in July, which is a rare occasion for us. But, we made up for it in August while we enjoyed root beer floats. Linda Holz shared the programs that were presented at the four day Danish American Heritage Society event held at the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa and surrounding towns. The theme was Ecologies and Ethnicity. We voted to send $300 to the SH archives at the museum and $200 to help with the dessert table at the SH National Convention in October. Donna Archer created a lodge ad for the program. The rest of the meeting was spent discussing convention by-laws that Carol Rudisill as a delegate will vote on. We only got through half of these before it was time to go home.

We were given a little booklet at our September meeting to help us with pronunciations of some Danish words. This time we went through the months of the year. We will add to it each month. This should be fun! We decided to have a

bake sale at Grand View University in their student union. We hope to make this a hyggelig event to let them know we are here. We will send member Cheyenne Jansdadatter a gift certificate to be used for her or new baby. The rest of the meeting was spent finishing the discussion on convention by-laws. Some of our members joined the Brotherhood at a soccer game with Grandview University.

We were cheering for the team and supporting a player from Denmark. He did score 2 of the 3 goals to win the game! A Danish intern from the museum was also there and he could tell us a lot about the game. Our members will also be helping the Brotherhood celebrate their 140 year anniversary.

We are looking forward to the convention in Minnesota and renewing our friendships.

Updates from Lodge #20, Kenosha, WI Happy Fall from Lodge #20, Kenosha! Where has this year gone? It has flown by with so many wonderful moments of joy gracing its presence.

This summer was a busy one for our lodge. In our summer months of June, July and August we prefer to enjoy the nice weather and socialize rather than sit inside having business meetings.

In June we celebrated Sankt Hans in the only way we know how: with lots of food, fire, friends and family. Our past president, Majbritt Andersen-Stewart hosted in her beautiful back yard and we are already looking forward to next year.

July brought our first fundraiser of the season with a paint day at the local Pinot’s Palette in Pleasant Prairie, WI. I was so happy that Michelle Haines, a member from the Los Angeles lodge was able to attend with me! We created a beautiful daisy painting and were even joined by a golden retriever puppy named Damascus who is in training to be a comfort dog for LCC K-9 Ministries!

August brought us to our 131st Anniversary celebration. We kept it low-key and all met at the Petrifying Springs Biergarten in Kenosha for a potluck afternoon. The heat was intense, but we were lucky enough to have ice-cold beer and plenty of shade. This will definitely be a re-occurring event in the future!

September has brought us back to our regular meetings at the Festival Foods Community room in Somers, WI on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm. We were able to review all of our last minute details ahead of convention and start planning for our elections in October/November.

We also hosted our 2nd Danish Dinner Fundraiser at the Ivanhoe Pub and Eatery in downtown Racine on September 30th. The owner, Doug Nicholson, put on a phenomenal four-course meal which included: Potato-Leek Soup, trio of Smorrebrød, choice of Frikadeller, Medisterpølse, or Flæskesteg, and Æblekage for dessert. Everything came with peas and carrots, red cabbage, and your choice of brune kartoffler or persille sovs kartoffler. Flights of Akvavit were offered along with a keg of Carlsberg and lots of raffles for added fun!

Dear Sisters, Convention time is nearly upon us! In fact, by the time you read this the National convention will already be in the past, and I predict that we will all have had a wonderful time. I look forward to meeting many more of you and building on to the rich history of the Danish Sisterhood of America.

For those who might not have made it to convention, I would like to give an update of funds raised for the Danish Sisterhood of America Online Library project. As of September 1st, we have raised $10,350 toward our goal. That’s right! YOU did it!! By reaching the goal of $10,000 before convention, you unlocked the $5,000 match from the Museum of Danish America board members who are also Sisterhood members. Reaching $15,000 by convention will allow the museum to start the search for a digital archives intern who would ideally start on this project in January of 2024.

The final goal for this project is to raise a total of $30,000, which will cover the salary of the intern for six months, as well as equipment rental costs. Once these materials have been scanned the funding will be used for uploading, long-term storage and online support, updating website and links to the online library as well as promoting the Sisterhood online library to national and international audiences.

This is a one-of-a-kind collection, and we are so very grateful for your continued support in making it accessible to the Sisterhood and researchers alike. Please remember that a pledge to support this project in the next three years can also count toward that goal.

RECIPE CARD

Thin Danish Pancakes (Tynde Dansk Pandekager)

2c. flour 1/4 c. shortening 1 tsp. sale 2 Tbsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. baking soda

3 tsp. baking powder 1 c. milk 1 c. buttermilk 4 eggs

Mix ingredients together. Spread batter as thin as possible in hot fry pan. To serve, spread with jam, sprinkle with sugar, roll up and enjoy!

Danish Butter Cookies (Danske Smorkager)

1 c. powdered sugar 1 c. sugar 1 c. margarine 1 c. vegetable oil 2 tsp. vanilla

1/4 tsp. almond extract 2 eggs 4 1/2 c. flour 1 tsp. soda 1 tsp. cream of tartar

Mix in order. Press through a cookie press. Bake in a 300 degree oven until very, very light tan.

(Rabarbar Boller)

1 c. sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 3 Tbsp. softened margarine 2 eggs

3/4 c. sour milk or buttermilk 1 tsp. vanilla 2 1/2 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 3 c. chopped rhubarb

Blend sugar, salt and margarine. Add eggs and beat well.

Add milk and vanilla. Blend well. Stir in flour and bakingn soda. Fold in rhubarb. Fill paper lined muffin tins 3/4 full.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. May frost with powdered sugar icing. Makes 18-20 muffins.

Rhubarb Muffins

Cut along the border for your very own recipe card!

(Varm Frugtkompot)

12 almond or coconut maracoons, crumbled 4 c. drained fruit (your choice) 1/2 c. slivered toasted almonds 1/4 c. brown sugar 1/4 c. rose wine or sherry 1/4 c. butter or margarine, melted In casserole, alternate layers of cookie crumbs and fruit, beginning and ending with the crumbs. Sprinkle over top the almonds, wine and sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and pour melted butter over the top. Serve warm.

Camp Grant Thank Yous

I attended Scouts BSA Camp Buffalo Bill in Cody, Wyoming in July. I earned Kayaking, Signs, Signals and Codes, and Space Exploration merit badges and a Stand Up PaddleBoarding and Kayaking award.

I also worked on Astronomy and Wilderness Survival Merit Badges. On Wednesday, our Troop went to Yellowstone National Park and spent the day at Old Faithful, Artist Paint Pots, geothermal pools, Mammoth Hot Springs, and made it all the way up to West Yellowstone in Montana. My picture is taken in Yellowstone.

The week ended with a raft building competition and campfire before we drove back home. Thank you to the Danish Sisterhood for the Camp Grant to help me go to camp this summer.

Hello Danish Sisterhood!

After a very busy summer and residence relocation, I realized I hadn’t appropriately thanked the Danish Sisterhood for the generous grant gift that helped me attend camp! I’m very grateful for the opportunity that the lodge helped give me and for the opportunity to attend camp. I was able to reconnect from friends to the year prior, have more activities that were more available compared to the year before, and see some counselors that were as amazing as always. I added a few pictures that the camp took as we weren’t allowed to have our own phones for picture taking.

I had an amazing time at dance camp thanks to the Danish Sisterhood.

Though we didn't do any Danish folk dancing, I did learn the Shoemaker's dance through my home Lodge, Lodge #78 in Troy, New York. I remember even learning the words in Danish when our lodge taught my Girl Scout Troop the dance that we performed at a cultural fair. At my camp we did many different genres of dance ballet and jazz were my favorites.
