This month marks two years since your current Board was installed, and what years it has been.

The Board was not able to participate in District Conventions which were cancelled but learned quickly that we can do incredible things online.

Through this special medium we have visited Denmark on several occasions, got an education about Legos, been taught Danish and have talked with each other, and while all of this is nice it does not totally replace our need to gather and visit with our Sisters and friends. The Coronavirus certainly did a number to many of our plans, and while we are not completely out of the pandemic, we see brighter times ahead.

Among those are planning for our trip to Denmark, which will be from August 11 to August 22, 2022. More registration information will come from Connie Schell in the November newsletter.

We are hoping that District Conventions will take place in 2022 and are looking forward to meeting and discussing the future of the Sisterhood with you, so keep your fingers crossed.

The National Board meeting is taking place September 26th-28th in Minneapolis, MN. This is our first face to face meeting since Spring of 2019, and we are looking forward to collaborating with each other and get a close look at the hotel we chose for our 2023 National Convention.

I will bring you updates from the Board and more information in regard to our trip to Denmark in the November newsletter, so stay tuned.

Dear Sisters, In September, I had the privilege to have dinner with our National Board as they met in the Twin Cities for their fall board meeting. It has been years since I've seen most of these Sisters in person and it was so lovely. Talking, eating together, hugging one another­--a wonderful time for all of us.

After the dinner, I headed home and reflected on those relationships. I thought about how, even across great distances and through virtual gatherings, we've still maintained those connections and we've still held on to and grown our goals and visions for the Sisterhood. I'm looking forward to reading their full report about what decisions and ideas were developed while at their autumn Board meeting!

The past few months, I've found that our SIsterhood has been as busy as ever, and I've been inundated with communications from sisters--keep them coming! It's so important to keep in touch and share with one another. We are a vibrant community of people who have so much to offer...and we can share with others to grow our organization. Just some thoughts I wanted to share with you all.

25 year pin for Hygge #188 Sister

At the July 26th Hygge Meeting, Sister Florence (Frogge) Dupont received her 25year membership pin from President Sandra Parker.

She joined at age 6 years. In attendance also were 3 generations of her family members, all of whom are Hygge Sisterhood members. Beginning on the left are her grandmother, Karen Hoylman, her mother, Kendra Frogge, and her daughter, 4-year old Clara Dupont. Both Karen and Kendra served as Past District Presidents and Florence attended Himmelbjerget Youth Camp

and worked at many bazaars, helping her mother in the White Elephant department. She also attended many district conventions through the years. She is now an elementary school teacher. For the map of where members are from, please add 4 sisters to the Aalborg location for this family.

Northstar Lodge #100 The Northstar Lodge #100 met on August 18, 2021, at Bush's Kelly Joy Restaurant at Lexington Heights at noon, with nine members and two guests present.

Meeting called to order by president, Ann Raven, followed by secretary and treasurer's reports.

Thank yous have been received from Eva's Place and the Rescue Mission for our donations.

It was decided to have our Christmas dinner at Hope Lutheran church on December

15th, at noon, purchasing the main food items and members bringing the remaining items. Our annual "Hats and mittens" project should be brought to this meeting.

MOO convention notes were passed around for members to look at. Sunshine Fund box was also passed around.

Meeting adjourned by president and we all departed for our homes.

Update from Amber Lodge #186, Brainerd, MN Amber Lodge #186 in Brainerd, MN had a very busy August getting ready for a big event. The Sons of Norway Sagatun Lodge along with Amber Lodge, Danish Sisterhood, sponsored the Viking Festival held at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds on August 21st. Nealna Gylling was in charge of our Aebleskiver food booth and Barb Wenschlag was in charge of the children's craft area for all festival attendees.

Our lodge sisters were very busy planning, setting up, decorating, making and selling Aebleskiver to many attendees. Everyone

Kids ages 4 to 16 enjoyed making crafts including painting shields (using 16" pizza rounds), knotting yarn wall hangings, making flying dragons, and incising letters into air drying clay slabs to spell their name in Viking rune letters. Kids were able to take all their craft projects home with them.

Everything was a great success and we were all very exhausted after the Festival was over!!!

Aebleskiver. We hope we interested some new people into joining with handing out Dsnish Sisterhood flyers.

Updates from Flora Danica Lodge #177, Solvang, California Flora Danica Lodge #177 in Solvang was finally able to gather in-person in August of 2021. Our last in-person meeting had been our Anniversary Dinner meeting in March of 2020. However, we were not completely isolated during those months as we had two drive through dinners of open-face sandwiches prepared by The Red Viking Restaurant in Solvang, including special desserts prepared by Bent Olsen of Olsen’s Bakery in Solvang. We invited the Solvang Brotherhood Lodge to participate and they were equally happy to join in for the delicious meals.

Our meeting in August 2021 was at the home of our President, Karen Voorhis. We sat outdoors on her beautiful patio and enjoyed each other’s company as well as some Danish-style hotdogs prepared by Karen’s father, Erik Pedersen. All of the side dishes prepared by our members made the meal extra special and we were treated to a presentation about the history of Eskimo Pie ice cream…and then served ice cream in the Eskimo Pie style (since they no longer make the original). We also initiated three new members.

We met again in person in September 2021 and initiated another three new members.

We are growing!

beautiful and clever homemade crafts that our members have continued to make during the lock-down. Photos are from September 18th booth.

We will meet again in October and discuss our Annual Community Giving recipients and amounts.

However, one worthy recipient received our donation early during the groundbreaking ceremony for the improvement project of the Solvang Festival Theater. The Theaterfest as it is known, is approaching 40 years old. It is an outdoor theatre which is used by the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts (PCPA) during the summer months offering several plays each year. The theatre is also used by the local community for various fundraising events during the year. Flora Danica Lodge #177 voted unanimously to donate to this worthy cause. Else Lassiter attended the groundbreaking ceremony and presented our check to the Solvang Festival Theater Rebuilding campaign. We all look forward to attending the PCPA plays next summer and for many years to come.

4th of July Update from Katherine Lodge #20, Kenosha WI Ellen Lodge 21 has been off the radar for several months, but we’re all back, with only a few bumps and bruises to show for the last year and a half. Thank goodness life has been back to semi normal for the last 6 months or so: visiting friends, eating out, going on long walks...all without a mask, for now.

Our last “in person” meeting was in February of 2020. We chose to forgo meetings and instead keep in touch through Ellen’s Corner newsletter. If anything needed to be voted on, the voting took place online. We also have a new member that joined during covid restrictions: Annette Straus. Please welcome her to our Sisterhood family.

In April, with 6 in attendance, we had our first Board meeting via Google. Since that went fairly well we tried it again for our monthly members meeting in May. Google or Zoom meetings are actually a fairly good substitute when meeting face to face is out of the question.

After members were fully vaccinated, our first in person gathering took place at the “Edgar Resort” (home of Sam and Pia Edgar) in Bailey, Co. It was so great to see our Sisters and guests face to face without masks for the annual picnic/ brunch. The weather was perfect (usually rains), and so was the food and the company. Pia usually puts together a fairly complicated quiz, and not one to disappoint, she did it again. Instead of the quiz being about Denmark, it was about the history of the Sisterhood in Colorado and the happenings in Denver and Colorado during the early years of Ellen Lodge. With the help of Pia’s family and their friends, and co-hosts Birgitte Jappe Ross/Jeff, and Pia Hansen/Renee, it was a great success.

Even though covid still caused a few obstacles along the way, two of our Sisters (Pia Edgar and Birgitte Jappe Ross) spent time in Denmark this summer for a long overdue visit with family. Mindy Brown made it to Wisconsin to visit her family. The rest of us were able to keep busy with road trips, eating out and in with family and friends, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, going to small concert venues, etc.

As you may recall from past Ellen Lodge articles, we are quite invested in making crafts for a craft fair that takes place in November. Last year the fair was cancelled and so was our biweekly craft sessions. Thankfully, Mindy Brown offered her home to us and we started our craft sessions again in June. We have been meeting twice a week and averaging 9 or 10 in attendance. It is so great to finally spend time with our Sisters, do some crafting, eating and just catching up on life. If all goes well, the craft fair will take place since it is our one and only fundraiser . We are thinking of alternative ideas just in case the covid variance closes down everything again.

Since the near future is quite tentative, our members are trying to plan for the future meetings: outside meetings, Lynne McEarchen’s clubhouse, Mindy Brown’s barn, Zoom/Google…

Now, if we a have a bad storm and no one wants to get out on the roads, an online meeting is possible. Two years ago, no one would have even thought of that. We would have just cancelled that month’s meeting. Now we have alternative possibilities.

There is so much devastating news going on around the world, and right now in the United States: Covid (still), the fires throughout the western states, and Hurricane Ida. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Wishing you a safe journey through the rest of 2021 and the coming year.

Mortensaften Mortensaften, or Saint Martin's Eve, is celebrated each year on November 11. While it's not an official Danish holiday, it is celebrated mainly as a harvest festival.

The unofficial holiday is named after St. Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier born around the year 316. St. Martin deserted the Roman army due to his Christian faith. St. Martin was being elected as bishop and, to resist the election, hid in a pen filled with geese. The geese started honking and revealed his location, so he was forced to take the office of Bishop.

To get revenge on the geese who had revelaed his hiding spot, he asked townspeople to slaughter a goose once a year.

RECIPE CARD

Roast Goose (Gåsesteg)

One 10-lb. goose One and a half cups peeled, cored and sliced apples 1 cup soaked, seeded prunes Salt and pepper Season the goose inside and out with salt and pepper. Stuff with apples and prunes. Brown goose in hot oven on each side. Add 4 cups of boiling water and baste. Roast at 325 degrees F for about three hours. For crisp skin pour two tablespoons of water over goose and let brown for 15 minutes. Skim fat from drippings; strain and thicken with flour for gravy.

Historian’s Corner

Danish Influence and Your Story

by Donna Christensen Thomas, National DSS Historian In what ways does your Danish ethnic background influence your life? How have you practiced the traditions in your life and family life? In our Sisterhood meetings we may insert a sentence or two of our personal experiences or Danish traditions.

Have you intentionally shared this information in depth with your children and grandchildren? I urge you to record for your family members as well as your Danish Sisterhood lodge your Danish heritage as much as possible.

A place to start is documenting what you know and what you might be able to research further with your significant level of knowledge about your family. Keep in mind that your family and descendants are likely to know far less than you do about your family--less than you might think and perhaps take for granted that they know. This also applies to identifying the photographs if they are not adequately identified. That may be a place to start as you write about the people and events surrounding the photograph as it triggers memories and takes you to an earlier place and time. You are the expert!

Some call it America's fastest growing hobby. Genealogy, the study of family ancestry, is booming. With the availability of DNA testing kits, and an ever-expanding number of genealogy websites, the average person can now trace family lines back hundreds of years. A good place to start is with what you know. Start with yourself and move backwards. Who were your ancestors: their names, important vital statistics (i.e. birth, marriage, and death dates and places) which distinguish one person from another? This is especially important with our Danish ancestry as the names are often very similar to one another. Also include their known nickname or commonly known by name? They may have a much longer name as my grandfather did than was commonly known. Many times, they used their second name (or middle name as we may know it) as the first name was usually given to honor another family member. So they already had at least one maybe more people by that name. For instance, the first son born to a couple was usually named after the paternal

grandfather, the second the maternal grandfather.

The same for the girls, first after the maternal , second after the paternal grandmother. If all the children in the family had followed this pattern... whew! Perhaps that's why most genealogists have grey hair!! My Danish great grandmother's siblings were almost exactly the children's names of her own children!

Often they had a descriptive adjective or other identifier to distinguish them from others.

I grew up in southwest Iowa which has many Danish descendants. My immigrant grandfather always insisted that he be called "Ed K" shortened for Edvard Kristian Valdemar Andersen, as there were other Edward or Edwin Andersens in the area which could be confusing in business, mail, peoples' conversatons or other important ways.

My sister, Diane Kay, as a little girl was certain that she was named after Grandpa. She cried when she learned that it was "Kay" instead of just "K" like Grandpa. What other names do you know from the family and where they lived, their spouses, etc. That "wider net" form of research not only gives you a more complete picture of the family, but also helps to ensure that you have the right "Edward Andersen". Also, the place names are often very similar as well as repeated in more than one county or area of Denmark. Be as specific as you can.

Sometimes nicknames have to be explained or researched and hold additonal clues to figure out. My mother said, "I think Kitty Pete was her sister." For some years I was puzzled, "Huh?" Although they were neighbors of my grandparents, they were not well-known to the family. Upon further research, the Danish immigrants Christina (nee Petersen) (1883-1979) who was married to Peter Lassen Hansen (1879-1967) of Audubon, Iowa. As I recently untangled the truth. It was Pete who was the brother of the Danish immigrant sister who married one of my family members. So it wasn't precisely correct, but held a clue to further information.

Often family stories hold the kernel of truth which may, like the "telephone game" in which 9

Historian’s Corner (cont.) players whisper a message around a circle consecutively and will most likely end up with a distorted form of the original message at the end of the game. Family stories may become convoluted.

Write those stories down as your best memory serves you. Not everything may be exactly right but may be very helpful to further research or at the very least that be a memory to share with the family.

When did they immigrate to the U.S.A or Canada? Where did they settle? Other places they were known to live. Also, you may want to ask siblings or cousins to fill in details that are "fuzzy" in your memory and could find clarification. My mother did this just yesterday. She attended the funeral of a family member on my paternal side. A nephew of the deceased was talking about where the deceased's family had lived and described one location. My mother was able to contribute with first hand informaton that the family had moved onto the farm as my grandparents moved off of it on March 1st, 1947. Small world! This was the date most farmers moved as it coincided well with the next season for planting crops. Overwhelmingly, many of our Danish ancestors were farmers.

What the work did they do? Occupation may be an outgrowth of the job they may have held while in the motherland, as I discussed in last month's article. My grandpa's brother, Ejner Alfred Andersen (1892-1974) had been an apprentice for a blacksmith and a wheelwright before immigrating in 1913 initially to Omaha, but later to Audubon. He worked for a blacksmith first and later bought the blacksmith shop. For many years, his competition was another Danish immigrant Peter Frederiksen (1885-1965) . Your ancestor's chosen occupation may have contributed to the community and may led to other information as you delve into old deed records and information for land or buildings owned, old photographs or postcards from the area, newspapers or interviewing people that may have patronized them or at least remember them.

To which community organizations did they belong? Remember that our Danish Sisterhood membership cards ask for information. In my work with transcribing these records for the Muse-

um of Danish America at the Genealogy Center, immigrants most often were very specific down to the parish, if not at least the county in which they were born. Very rarely did only "Denmark" appear as their place of birth. Similarly, marriage records, other ethnic organizations, obituaries and death certificates can be helpful in guiding you to the place of birth if that is unknown. This very important piece of information is crucial to further research in Denmark and to the rest of the family.

Are there interesting facts about your family to share with others and to preserve as your family history? Have you had correspondence or visits from cousins in Denmark? Or perhaps you have been lucky enough to visit family in Denmark.

Write about your experiences there, the people you visited and how you may be related to them.

These are clues and information that could be very helpful to future genealogists in your family.

In what ways did you celebrate your ethnic heritage as you grew up? How do you continue that legacy? These family stories are unique to you and can be very rich content to share at family reunions. As your membership takes their turn, it would make an excellent program for your Danish Sisterhood lodge meetings. Some lodges collect these stories of their members as part of their historical records.

This may seem daunting, but if you just sit down and start writing down what you know and remember (again, which may be much more than your descendants know). You can add to it by writing some a little several times a week. Also, you may want to ask siblings or cousins to fill in details that are "fuzzy" in your memory and could find clarification. Family reunions can be a great time and place for this--especially if a video tape is recording the interactions. But also a phone call or letter can be a pleasant conversation with cousins or friends who may be knowledgeable. As we are experiencing the pandemic and likely still not as busy with our pre-pandemic activities, this may be a prime opportunity to work on this endeavor. Remember, you are the expert about you! No one can tell your story as well as you can! Pen to paper... or fingers to keyboard, just get started! Happy writing!

DSS Angel Member Status

The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available:

• A change of beneficiary to: Danish Sisterhood of America or, • A change of beneficiary to one of the national scholarship funds. Be specific, ie: Betty Hansen Scholarship, Past National Officers, Camp Grant, etc.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or the National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change Form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you'd be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category can participate by donating $1,000 to the Danish Sisterhood of America.
