Christina Sallee, National President 2020 has demonstrated how straightforward and less complicated previous years have been. As I look out on the smoky skyline of Portland, Oregon I see only the grey haze of smoke from the many fires on the west coast. Portland has been declared the city with the worst air quality in the world, and we are now on Day 3 of being asked to stay home due to poor air quality, I am thankful to say that it is no longer “Hazardous”, but only “Very Unhealthy”. Challenges are what make us stronger, however, and despite 2020 my family remains strongly connected. It is something we, as the Danish Sisterhood, should all strive to achieve.

As the east coast is now being hit with stormy weather, I want to remind you that we all joined the Sisterhood with the thought of connecting with our roots and building a sense of community. We should all work a little extra to stay connected with our Sisters, I know that we all appreciate someone checking in on us and showing that we care. An important note: please remember that we do have the Disaster Relief Fund that can help Sisters in need when events become so overwhelming that a bit of extra help is needed. Reach out to one of your National Board members and they will help you get more information!

On a happier note, I had the honor of installing the first Board for our Tivoli Lodge via an online Zoom session.

This was an important step for our virtual lodge to be represented at National Conventions, and I extend my most sincere congratulations to Tivoli Lodge #300: your hard work has paid off!

I have received questions about installations and initiations while we are in the pandemic. You should follow your state and local guidelines for getting together, and for those of you who are unable to meet, I suggest you have your installations and initiations online then perhaps have a combined celebration when we can meet again. During these special times if your current local Board members are willing, and your membership agrees, I would suggest that they continue for another year as they have been installed previously. If needed, I and the rest of the National Board, are willing to install your lodge via Zoom, just let us know.

Dear Sisters, This past week I got to enjoy some lovely time away from home, including some time to take in the fall colors up north. It was beautiful and a much needed getaway!

With autumn officially here in Minnesota, we're preparing for the winter months. We know there will be extra challenges this year due to COVID-19, but we're not going to let it stop us from finding enjoyment in life.

At the beginning of 2020, I wrote a list of all the things I wanted to do this year. Most of those things were cancelled, but as October approaches, I've started looking at the things I HAVE done and accomplished. I was amazed at all of the things I've still gotten to do or learn or revisit this year. It only goes to show that humans are very adaptable creatures.

I hope that all of you are doing well and that this newsletter brings a little joy to your life.

I also hope that you're able to find the joy in the little things or the unexpected experiences that you've had. As always, I'd always love to receive stories or pieces of history or photos for the newsletter. Have a question? Don't hesitate to reach out. After all, the DSN is largely by and for the members!

News from Kenosha, WI As a member of Katherine Lodge #20, I am sharing the sad news that came out of Kenosha, WI at the end of August. On August 24, 2020, the Danish Brotherhood Lodge of Kenosha, WI was destroyed by a fire during the uprisings that occurred after the shooting of Jacob Blake by a Kenosha police officer.

Up until the spring of 2017, the Brotherhood Lodge had also been home to the Danish Sisterhood Katherine Lodge #20.

I, myself, was installed as a member of the Sisterhood at this Lodge in 2012. My fellow Lodge #20 sisters and I are, of course, mourning

the loss of the Brotherhood's history housed in the lodge and have been fondly recalling the memories made at the numerous events and meetings held there.

I ask our fellow Sisterhood members for their prayers for the healing of the entire Kenosha community and the members of the Brotherhood, but especially for Jacob Blake, his family and Kenosha's BIPOC community members.

News from Kenosha Lodge #20 We hope this finds all of our fellow Sisters healthy and enjoying summer as best they can.

We had a Virtual Meeting on Wednesday August 19th, we enjoyed seeing our members via Zoom and talking to them (either zoom or telephone). We are excited to have set a regular schedule now of virtual meetings for the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7pm, and hope many more of our members will join us at the meetings. Our plan is to have a short business meeting, a program and then social time to catch up with any news from each of us. Updates from Tivoli Virtual Lodge #300 Tivoli Lodge #300 continues to develop a hybrid of DSS lodge traditions. On September 10th, we installed our first board of officers, with National President, Christina Sallee, leading the ceremony.

Just like in a brick and mortar lodge installation, we placed on hand over our hearts and raised the other as we took the pledge to server our lodge. Tusind tak til Christina for taking the time out of her schedule to be with us for that momentous occasion.

Following the installation, we had a program on the history of LEGO which included both a colorful PowerPoint-driven presentation and short video clips on the company. (The presentation is available from Karin Wasler if you’d like to use it for a virtual lodge meeting.)

During a recent Tivoli Lodge Leadership Meeting, the program schedule has been set for the remainder of 2020: October 8: Show and Tell (thanks to other lodges for the great idea!)

November 12: Juletraditioner 1: We’ll begin talking about Christmas traditions December: Juletraditioner 2 og Jule Fest: We’ll continue our discussion of holiday traditions and have a Christmas party!

Historian’s Corner

Need a new hobby? Or Tell Your Story, as Only You Can

So how are you faring during this 'hunckering down" time? Perhaps your closet and drawer cleaning and reorganizing was completed long ago...and may be needing to be done again! Do you find yourself lacking interesting projects or meaningful endeavors?

I would encourage you to consider writing down details about your life story, work toward recording your family history or perhaps researching for further knowledge. These are memories and information that perhaps only you can provide to your family with your first hand knowledge and memories you hold dear.

Perhaps you are lucky to have older family members or other genealogists in your family with whom you might corroborate. Maybe you are lucky to have someone else's work to verify and update to the present.

There are many resources out there to get you started and to help you along the way. Seek them out in the library, bookstore, the internet or a genealogist friend.

We are all too happy to pass along the passion we are addicted to...I mean, enjoy very much! Ha Ha! This has been a life-long endeavor for me. I was recording in my high school yearbooks before I knew the word "genealogy"! My children were carried to genealogy meetings as babies. The older people often told me how lucky I was to be doing this in as a young person when all my grandparents I knew were still alive as well as my husband's parents and grandmother.

Certainly you would want to start with the names, dates and places. Those identifiers are crucial, but don't forget to write about other aspects like their occupations, education, hobbies, personalities and health history. Family historians call this "putting meat on the bones" of the basic facts. A conversation with one of my Danish Sisterhood members this weekend indicated that they had noticed the "trend" of a certain health problem and started documenting it. I have a nursing background so I was interested and have collected that information along the way. May relatives have asked, "Does anyone else have this problem in the family?"

I never exptected to need it as much as when my older son at age thirteen and just finishing eighth grade discovered a lump (i.e. tumor) on his shoulder.

We sat with two geneticists and were queried for at least two hours as to health history of both sides of the family. I was so happy that I felt I had a handle on the information as much as I did! The geneticist's son Danish Sisterhood News, October 2020

eventually became a close friend to my younger son during college. The tissue removed took on a life and story of its own in the imaginations of the teenage boys' and their friends. It even made it on to his birthday cake that year! It was known as "Lucky" as we were so thankful! He's about to turn thirty in a couple of weeks. It was benign and he's been fine since its removal. So we can laugh about it now, but it was certainly a concern at the time!

Don't neglect to share the challenging times in your lives... like 2020!!? How have you managed to perservere through it? How about the Depression, World War, etc? Natural disasters? Perhaps leaving Denmark, family and the familiar to embark on a new life in the USA or Canada? How did your family celebrate birthdays and holidays? I wrote about how might you've shared and incorporated ethnic traditions in a previous article a couple of months ago.

Using a computer is something I highly recommend. It is much easier to add, correct, stay organized and share the information with your family. The volume of paper soon becomes unmanageable. Think about how similar the Danish names can be and the patronymic system of naming and how that could be managed. One of my cousins has five HANSEN lines in their pedigree!

You can usually do a test drive of the program for free and may easily upgrade. Choose the one that seems most intuitive to you. Compare the features and how user-friendly the program seems to you. Most programs have free tutorials. A decent genealogy program might only cost about $40 to upgrade. Ancestry. com is a paid commercial website. Familysearch.org is free of charge. Both are excellent and comparable.

If you are not able to use a computer, do not let it stop you! Just get started and keep going! Do remember to document the source of your information. Also, don't forget the resources you likely have at home: family Bibles, obituaries, diaries, birthday/datebooks and your own memories and knowledge, etc. Even if you don't know all of the information, put down what you know and add clarification and details as you can. This may involve calling relatives and reconnecting to ask questions of them.

This might also be a good time to sort and identify photographs from over the years. How many of them could your children and grandchildren identify 6

Historian’s Corner without your help? You know what is likely to happen to unidentified photographs that nobody knows who, what, where or why, don't you?! Don't let your family suffer the loss of information that you are likely to possess. Those old photographs also can help jog your memory as to the stories represented in them.

I would encourage you to use photo corners and a photo pencil rather than gluing them down to paper.

Write as much as you know as if you were writing a newspaper article ...because you are! You could present copies of them and the narratives in notebooks to your family perhaps for the Holidays this year or next. You are sharing the precious news of your family history with the present and future generations. You might also find a newspaper article from the time of the photograph to supplement your memories and story. You might also scan the photographs to save and share electronically or perhaps archive in a bank box to protect them. Ask for help if you need it with the technology. It is advisable to make copies of photographs and not use the only original copy you might possess as you add them to a project.

Our younger son moved to Palo Alto, CA at the end of May. He had attended Rootstech, a national genealogy conference, last February with my husband and I in Salt Lake City. (Next February it will be online only and FREE!) I was so pleased and surprised when he asked to accompany us! He also wanted to get a DNA test. (Science confirmed what we knew!) I printed out his pedigree chart, carefully adhered it together and sent it with him when he moved. His Dad had a commercial company print out a family chart which just arrived today. The forms and ways to share the information is nearly endless! My son's roommates have expressed interest in his pedigree chart displayed on the wall. That's neat and very rewarding! It's the most personal and unique gift one can make and receive!

This weekend I was able to connect with a distant cousin. Her mother and I share great, great grandparents from Denmark. My Danish immigrant maternal grandfather, Edvard Kristian Valdemar Andersen's (1900-1998) mother, Marie Kristine (Lundberg) (1861-1951) Andersen had a sister Edvardine Wilhelmine (Lundberg) Knight (1862-1952) and a brother Ejner Alfred Lundberg (1968-1943) who immigrated to Medord, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, respectively. Their parents were Johannes LUNDBERG (1822-1897) and Antoinette Marie Kristine (ANDERSEN) LUNDBERG. In fact, in either 1919 (his original immigration) or in 1926/7 when

he returned from Christmas with his family, the uncle approached him on the Trans-Atlantic ship and asked if he was Marie’s son. Grandpa resembled his “moder” very much. We have a photograph of the two of them on the ship. This is the part of the family who I know least about and that I regret not asking my grandfather more about. The family was mostly born and lived around Nykøbing, Falster island, Maribo county. One of the noteworthy things that I noticed right away was how the naming of Marie and her husband's children were very similar to those of her siblings. This is not at all uncommon I've found through my years of Danish research.

I connected with the cousin through her Ancestry.com family tree as I was working to learn more to add on to my own research. She had been on the website since 2012 and has a significant tree. She was also on my DNA match list that I hadn’t yet quite gotten down the list that far. She invited me to be her Facebook friend. I noticed she has several experiences listed in her personal profile and social causes that are also similar to my own so that's a good sign for having things in common. (Nature or nurture?!?!) She passed my correspondence on to her Mom who was excited and wants to join in on the fun and I know my Mom will also be very excited to correspond as well as numerous other extended family members.

I think she may decide that she really opened "a big can of worms” !! LOL She said that her grandmother was raised mostly by her grandmother, the immigrant sister to my great grandmother so they felt they knew quite a bit more because of that, although they had also lost some things due to a natural disaster in the past. While taking a break in writing this article I located yet another cousin on this same line and wrote a note to her via Ancestry.com. I look forward to hearing back from her! I also Googled a name and found a very interesting story in a historical legal case. I'll update you as it unfolds! Very exciting!

Perhaps you'll want to write up an article and share your experience with the rest of us in the Danish Sisterhood Newsletter! Grave Marker Emblem

Many organizations have emblems that can be used to commemorate their member’s affiliation with the organization by attaching the emblem to their grave marker.

The Danish Sisterhood of America is excited to announce a grave marker emblem that may be purchased from a third party in either stainless steel or bronze. The company is Metal Logos in Kansas

Before purchasing please be sure to check with the cemetery for their rules and regulation regarding any possible restrictions. Lodge #100 Update Eight members gathered at Hope Lutheran Church for the Sept. 16th meeting of Northstar Lodge #100. A delicious lunch was served by co-hostesses, Dawn Grabitz and Donna Meddaugh. Reports were gone over and correspondence read.

It was decided to not have an October meeting and meet November 18th and bring our hats and mittens to be donated to DHS to that meeting. Meeting adjourned.

RECIPE CARD

Glögg

This was a favorite recipe of Past National President, Lorraine Zembinski of Lodge 15 in Milwaukee.

3-6 weeks prior to using:

4/5 qt burgundy wine

4/5 qt port wine

Peel of ½ orange

2 sticks cinnamon

1 T cardamom seeds, shelled

¼ c sugar Combine in a large saucepan. Simmer 5 minutes – do not boil. Pour mixture back into wine bottles and cover tightly.

Let stand until ready to use.

Updates from Lodge #15, Milwaukee, WI In the days of Covid 19 many of us have struggled to keep connected with our Sisterhood Lodges. Keeping connected with our heritage and those who share our love of Denmark is important to us, that is why we are members of the Sisterhood.

Our Lodge began meeting via Zoom in July. This month thanks to our program chairman, Marcia Jante, we were able to not only get together with each other, but with Lodge #21 in Denver Colorado. What a great idea this is. In this time of pandemic there can be opportunities.

The opportunity presented to our lodge was having Lynne McEachern from the Ellen Lodge present a program on her great, great uncle, Emil Nolde. Marcia had read about Lynne’s program which she presented to her lodge and contacted her to present it to our lodge. Happily Lynne was open to this idea.

On September 16, we had 14 members and a special guest, Mike Kirk from Waupaca Wisconsin. Mike’s mother, Beverly, is a fairly new

member in our lodge. The Kirk’s live in Waupaca where our Lodge has a strong connection with Dane’s Hall. By meeting virtually we have even been able to connect with our own lodge members who have not been able to attend meetings in person. It was great to get to see our member Margaret Schoewe.

Lynne introduced herself and told us a bit about her Lodge. Some of us knew a few of the Denver Lodge members from when they hosted the National Convention in 2015. She told us a bit about her family and then talked with us about her heritage. Lynne’s father’s mother was Danish. She died in 1929 long before Lynne was born, but you can hear the pride and love in Lynne’s voice as she talked about her grandmother.

Lynne’s dad had done a lot of ancestry research long before the availability of that information on the internet. About a year and a half ago in doing her own research on family, continued on next page 9

1 c. akvavit Strain brew from bottles into large saucepan. Heat to steaming - do not boil. Float orange slices studded with cloves.

Ladle into mugs. Be sure to include almonds and raisins into each mug. Serve with a cinnamon stick. Makes 16 half-cup servings.

(cont.) Updates from Lodge #15, Milwaukee, WI she found out that she was related to a painter named Emil Nolde. A man who had produced 5,069 pieces of art from prints to paintings.

Lynne talked about her great, great uncle, his life and his artwork. He was a part of the German Expressionist school. German Expressionism refers to artists in the early 20th century whose work expressed their feelings and ideas related to the reality of the times. While some of the work is dark and disturbing, influenced not only by what was occurring in Germany but also by the horror of WWI, much of Nolde’s work is characterized by bright colors and floral themes.

Nolde was born in 1867 on a farm in Nolde, Denmark located in the Schleswig area of Jutland.

Recognizing he was not meant to be a farmer, he left the farm as a young man to follow other interests.

His birth name was Emil Hansen, later changed by him to Nolde. He lived much of his life in Germany. Lynne said unfortunately he was a supporter of the National Socialist German Worker’s Party. Despite his political beliefs, when

Hitler rejected all forms of modernism in art, Nolde’s work was condemned and removed from museums. Over 1,000 pieces of his work were removed, more than those of any other artist in Germany.

Once the war ended, Nolde’s work was again honored. Much of his work can be seen on the internet.

Susan Jensen pointed out that the Milwaukee Art Museum has the Specks Collection donated to the museum by Marcia and Granvil Specks which includes drawings and paintings

by Emil Nolde, including a copy of one of his wood block prints shown to us by Lynne.

Hiking Viking Fundraiser: The Results are in!

Hiking the Colorado Trail was always something I had in the back of my mind, but I really never thought I would have the time or opportunity to attempt it. Then, the COVID pandemic arrived. My summer trip to Denmark was canceled, and, to paraphrase John Muir, the mountains started calling, so I went!

Prior to beginning the hike, we (the NFDA) decided to make it a fundraiser for Danish America. I knew this would add some pressure for me. As the response to our call and participation in the fundraiser climbed, I felt a huge obligation to complete the 500mile hike. Failure was not an option!

Honestly, it really worried me. Not many 60+ year-olds do this!

About one-third way through the hike, my knees and my left ankle were in great pain. It was raining every night, and the mornings were a wet mess of swatting mosquitos and packing away drenched gear. In Danish Sisterhood News, October 2020

my mind I was composing the reasons why I had to give it up. Then miraculously my knee and ankle pain went away, and the skies cleared up. It was truly an answer to my prayers. I began to believe I could do this.

I would just take it a day at a time, and not dwell on the hundreds of miles remaining.

Days and miles passed, and the end seemed in reach.

When I reached Creede and read the many messages of encouragement on social media, it truly lifted my spirits, and I thank all of you for that! I felt stronger, and each day I enjoyed the majesty of the mountain scenery, and the days became much more enjoyable.

The last 2 weeks of the hike were the best, as I passed through the San Juan mountain range in reach of the finish. Tears welled up in my eyes as I approached the finish to see my “base camp support team” waiting for me beyond an arch of Danish and American flags. There stood my cousin Reed Bro, his wife Jamie, champagne in hand to celebrate!

Beyond being a personal accomplishment, I am most pleased that, together with your help and enthusiasm, we were able to support Danish American organizations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. I am so thankful for your generosity in getting behind this fundraising effort. Thank you for all your pledges and encouragement! My NFDA colleagues Linda Steffensen, Katrine Vange, and Karin Wasler, and I are truly grateful for your support, and we look forward to many more future projects to support Danish America! DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available: • A change of beneficiary to: Danish Sisterhood of America or, • A change of beneficiary to one of the national scholarship funds. Be specific, ie: Betty Hansen Scholarship, Past National Officers, Language Camp Grant, etc.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or the National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change Form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you would be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category are welcome to participate by donating $1,000 to the Danish Sisterhood of America.
