Nealna Gylling, National President

I write this first president’s column with a number of feelings – pride to be your president, trepidation at the huge responsibility, thankfulness to the delegates who elected me, and excitement at the 4 years to come and what we can accomplish. The 28th National Convention is now in our rearview mirror. The excitement, camaraderie, and learning were visible throughout the three days. It was a wonderful time with many friendships renewed and new ones made. There were serious discussions and lots of laughter. It was truly a special gathering that will long be remembered. I want to thank the delegates for all their hard work as they considered, discussed and voted on 47 proposals. Wow – that is a lot!!! The workshops were all informative. If you were unable to attend them, look for the information in this issue of the Newsletter. We have tried to summarize them so all members can get the information and find out how to access the history of the Sisterhood at MoDA, learn about the National Foundation of Danish America and read about some of the ideas shared for gaining new and retaining old members. Also announced at convention: The 2024 Sisterhood Denmark Trip will be to Beautiful East Jutland from September 10 – 21, 2024. It will be led by Sune Frederiksen. More information about this trip including price and sign up will be in your December or January newsletter. Sune comes to us under the recommendation of Benekidte. We look forward to sharing this trip with you. Your new board met briefly at the convention and the excitement was inspiring. We chose areas in which we wanted to work. Karen Vig-Keathly will be managing the Butikken. Let her know of items you would like to see for sale. Carol Rudisill and

Velkommen

Lauren C. Nielsen, Editor

Dear Sisters, I was able to visit the Danish Sisterhood Convention for the Friday night dinner and entertainment portion of the night. It was so fun to see all of you in attendance, meet new people, and reconnect with old friends. The evening entertainment was a blast with lots of laughs and good merriment. Now, we look toward the future. As the next few months unfold, I'm sure there will be many more stories from Convention and updates from our new Board. I'd like to take a moment to congratulate the new Board members and welcome those who are returning. As with any natural transition of leadership, there will be change, but change is not always bad! We will continue to learn from one another and grow as an organization! Now, we approach the winter months again and the holidays. I'm wishing each of you a successful and happy holiday season full of fun, friends, family, and more! I look forward to seeing photos of lodge activities and hearing stories of everyone's celebrations!

Updates from Ellen Lodge #21, Denver, CO

Summer has officially come and gone. Many of our members enjoyed the summer months traveling around the United States, Europe, Denmark……. With all the traveling, most of us were still able to be home to enjoy our July picnic at Sister Mindy Brown’s home. The weather was perfect, making it possible to enjoy each other’s company around the campfire. We “baked” our snobrod over the coals, and if we made our hole big enough, we were able to put our hotdog inside of it and enjoy our “dog in a bun”. We had so much food supplied by all the party goers: chicken, brats, hotdogs (prepared by Mindy’s husband, Rich) salads, baked beans, fruit, and topped off with dessert. And, of course, we wrote on the back of our “witch” something we wanted to get rid of, and tossed it in the fire. As always, Pia Edgar entertained us with another quiz. It was only 10 questions and it was multiple choice, but, that does not mean it was easy. The questions Danish Sisterhood News, November 2023

came from different heritage presentations given by members of our lodge. Apparently, some of us need to pay better attention. Tita Jergensen came in first and Joanna Christensen came in second. Congratulations to both of you. In August we had our monthly meeting and welcomed Joanna Dubisher as the newest member of our lodge. She will be such a great addition. We also voted on all the proposals for National. Malinda Ringo is ready to represent Ellen Lodge at the National Convention. In September we celebrated our 131st birthday. This year we went south to Castle Rock and enjoyed lunch at La Loma’s Mexican restaurant. There were 22 in attendance. Again, Pia Edgar came up with a “sort of” quiz. We were to make as many words out of “Danish Sisterhood” (sit, disaster, stir, etc.) as possible. Christine Krueger was the winner (by a lot!!) with 99 words and Tita Jergensen was the winner of the most 9 letter words. Thank you to Pia for making us use our brain and then supplying us with our own personal piece of kransekage. A special thank you to Ethel Jergensen Evans and Andrea Thomsen for hosting the luncheon. It’s Fall and time to get out and see the Colors of the Season. Enjoy!! Chris Jensen Hix

California District Report for 2023 We are still alive in California but I think a bit quiet. Covid interrupted our district conventions like it did for everyone. When it was time to start up again, we needed to evaluate the situation we were in. We have seven lodges in California, some are quite small and others not that active with younger people that can take charge. Also, we have district conventions with the local Brotherhood lodges, and they were in much the same shape as the Sisterhood. We needed to reinvent ourselves. The two years when we ended up canceling the district conventions, it had been the Petaluma Lodge's turn to host the convention, which they were happy to do. Many things happened in those two years, and the lodge did not feel they had the manpower to host when we started again in 2022. But we had become used to Zoom now, and we had some combined Zoom meetings. We came up with a solution, that we have now done for two years and very successfully at that. We decided to pick a central place in California and that was Solvang. We then asked them to be the location organizers for the foreseeable future while the others lodges would pick up other duties. We still have a district president to organize the meetings, but the lodges are in charge of renting a hall, registration, name tags, running the make it, bake it sale, etc. For the second year in a row we had a district convention in April in Solvang with Donna Ineman as president and the rest of us helping out. We had a party on Friday night, which was held at the Elverhøj Museum. We had access to the museum and in their large backyard we had a cocktail party. Saturday morning we met at the Danish church hall where we had our meeting and later a lunch of Danish hotdogs with all the trimmings. The national representative this year was Anna Nielsen. She did a very nice presentation.

have made over $1,000 each year for the last two years on the sale of items we have donated. Half of that money goes to scholarships. As something new this year, we had an arts and craft session after the convention was finished. Michelle Haines of the Los Angeles Lodge though from Wisconsin was in charge. We had a choice of four crafts and most of us did two of them. It was a lot of fun and we plan to do that again next year. On Sunday morning before heading home, we met again in the church hall for a breakfast of œbleskiver and medisterpølse. Our new district president is Lori McConnell, who also happens to be from Solvang. She will be leading us for our next convention, which is already planned for the last weekend in April. Aase Hansen, Los Angeles Lodge

Afterwards we had the installation and also the close of the make it, bake it sale. We 7

Mange tak! We are thrilled to announce that we have met our first fundraising goal: $15,000 by the time of the National Convention in October. In fact, we have raised over $18,000! For those of you who attended Convention in person, you celebrated that accomplishment with us. We are pleased to share the list of individuals, lodges, and districts who have contributed to get this project past the halfway point. (List of donors as of September 21) Individuals Erik & Eva Andersen, Croton-on-Hudson, NY Jane & Mark Blackman, Waukesha, WI Joanna Christensen, Castle Rock, CO Barry & Winnie Edmonds, Moodus, CT Bruce & Kristie Hansen-Mendez, Chicago, IL Alan & Deborah Henke, Fitchburg, WI Melinda Brown & Rich Inman, Littleton, CO Jean Jackson, Western Springs, IL Cheyenne Jansdatter, Atlantic, IA Marcia Jante, New Berlin, WI Annette Lind, Milwaukee, WI Karen L. With our first funding goal achieved, we can begin implementing this project. The museum is currently advertising for an Archives Intern to begin in January and start scanning ledgers, newsletters, and other priority materials. We still need your support to fully fund this effort up to $30,000. Our aim is to cover all of the costs of creating and sharing the online library of Sisterhood archival materials. After 2025 the Museum of Danish America will continue to pay for the online support for this collection and keep it accessible. Your gifts and pledges are still important to fully realize this project. We encourage you and your lodge to consider an end-of-year gift in 2023 and ongoing gifts in 2024 and 2025. Exploring the Museum of Danish America’s Online Collection

Are you ready to embark on a journey through Danish history and culture? The Danish Museum's online collection is a treasure trove of artifacts, art, and knowledge waiting to be discovered. To help you get started, here's a quick overview of the search functions: • Homepage Access: Visit the View Our Collection website by entering https://danishmuseum. pastperfectonline.com in your web browser. • Browse Categories: On the homepage, you will find a link for Random Images toward the top right of the page. Using this function will allow you to browse the museum’s collection if you are just interested in an overview of what we have. When you find something that interests you, click on it to view more information about that image. • Keyword Search: Looking for something specific? Click on the Keyword Search link. I recommend reading the instructions written below the search bar for a more detailed description of how to use this function. Use the search bar and enter keywords like "Danish Sisterhood of America" or "Lodge #12" to find related items. Please remember to use quotation marks for your search, this will ensure you get more accurate results. • Advanced Search: If you want to narrow down your search, click on Advanced Search to filter results by date, material, and more. In this tab, I often use the Search Term field most. Nearly ALL records related to the Sisterhood will have “DSS” as a search term attached to it. So, if you just want to see all of the Sisterhood items we have, you can search “DSS.” If you want to narrow that to your lodge you can search “DSS” AND “Lodge #21.” Please remember that I only have items catalogued that were donated. There are some lodges that are not represented in the DSS collection. • Viewing Items: Click on any item in the search results to see detailed information, descriptions, and, where available, high-resolution images. • YouTube Video Tutorial: There is an 11 minute video tutorial of how to use View Our Collection on the Museum of Danish America’s YouTube channel. If you navigate to YouTube and type “Museum of Danish America View Our Collections Tutorial” a more detailed and visual explanation is available. Exploring the Online Newspaper Library Also available through the Museum of Danish America is the Newspaper Online Library. This houses Danish language newspapers such as Bien, Dannevirke, Danskeren, Den Danske Pioneer, and the Lauritz Melchior Scrapbooks. This is also where the DSS Newsletter and Ledgers will live eventually. There are currently 15,583 issues available to browse dating from 1873-2012. • Homepage Access: Navigate to https://box2.nmtvault.com/DanishIM/ to access and browse the Newspaper Library. • Tabs: toward the top of the screen you will notice tabs labeled Browse Collections, which will allow you to look at each of the newspaper collections in full, Browse Titles, which allows you to do the same, but offers more filters to narrow your search by year, month, day, and place published. You can also do a general search for anything you might be interested in, like a name, place, business or organization. • Language and Font: Be prepared for Gothic Danish type face in the early newspapers. My best suggestion would be to use a gothic alphabet which you can find on Google, and use it to decipher while you get used to the gothic alphabet. With these simple search functions, you're on your way to uncovering the rich tapestry of Danish heritage in the online collection. Please reach out with any additional questions. Enjoy your exploration! Danish Sisterhood News, November 2023

Membership Corner Thank you for electing me as a National Trustee on the Board of the Danish Sisterhood of America. My name is Susan Hoppough and I am humbled and excited to begin this four- year term. I belong to and am Secretary of Dorthea Lodge #65 in Greenville, Michigan. I also serve as the President of M.O.O. District serving Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario, Canada. I have been a member of Dorthea Lodge for 8 years. According to 23 and Me, I am 12% Scandinavian and I count all of that as “Danish”. I also serve as secretary and project manager for the Danish Cultural Center in Greenville. I am grateful for retirement that affords me time to dedicate to these roles and responsibilities. I, too, thank you for electing me to the National Board of the Danish Sisterhood. My name is Carol Rudisill and I have been a sisterhood member of Lodge 102 in Des Moines for thirty-three years. I am currently their President, and I’m past President of the Heartland District. I’ve always had a passion for membership. I love the Danish culture and love sharing it with others. I am very excited to be working with Susan

Hoppough, who is as passionate about membership as I am. We are planning on having an on-going article in the Sisterhood News entitled Membership Corner where we can share ideas. We want to work with all of the sisterhood lodges to give you assistance in methods to grow our membership as well as collecting all kinds of ideas from YOU to share with the membership. We want you to feel comfortable calling on either of us with any of your membership concerns or news. Our first two suggestions: 1. The easiest way to raise our membership is to register your spouse, children, and other family members. Both men and children can be members of the Danish Sisterhood. 2. Another way is to make personal phone calls to new and prospective members. Letting prospective members know they are wanted and needed may be all the encouragement they need to join.

Member Engagement Robin Decker a member of Dagmar Lodge and an employee of the Danish Home of Chicago did a wonderful roundtable discussion on Membership Engagement What is it? There was standing room only. Robin had so much interaction with our members she only had a few minutes to run her PowerPoint presentation. The topics Robin discussed were: • What does membership engagement mean? • Why is membership engagement important? • Current member engagement during initial membership. • Don’t forget their big day/family tragedies. Make them feel special. • Catch member disengagement early. • Arrange volunteer activities. • Membership engagement during renewals. • Establish a personal contact person.

• Engagement is the key to member retention. • Deeper look at your recruitment process. • Make a commitment. • Encourage them to use their membership benefits. • Create a free membership program or provide scholarship opportunities for those who cannot afford your lodge dues. Her final thought: Lodge membership retention is essential for the success of any lodge. By knowing your members, engaging them, offering incentives, communicating regularly and continually improving the lodge keep your members happy and engaged. Engagement is reaching out to members. Reach out before they opt out!
