Sindy Mikkelsen, National President We on the Board enjoyed a very successful fall meeting in Mystic CT. We could not have asked for better weather, just perfect!

The Sisterhoods website has been updated with current information as we know it. If you or your lodge sees items that require change, please don’t hesitate to reach out to VP, Julie Morrison, to have the changes made. We’ve been updating the calendar with interesting and informative dates, thanks to Member Susanne Hohlen for always being so generous with her time in providing updated materials. Go in and check it out.

Our Secretary, Glenda Madrid, is gearing up for getting the annual reports out to the lodges soon, arriving around the first of December. The anniversary pins, certificates and calendars are in these packages, so please be sure and appropriately honor your members when you can.

Carol Faruolo, our treasurer had just completed our audit, which went well. We will be publishing the results in an upcoming issue of the DSS News.

Trustee, Linda Holz, has been building up an inventory of new items just in time for holiday shopping. Our cute baby onesies are adorable!

Watch for our holiday sale, you won’t want to miss it.

Trustee, Christina Sallee had a successful scholarship and grant year and is already gearing up for the next. It was great to see the children’s notes of appreciation in a recent newsletter, and all of that is due to the generosity from each of you.

Karin Wasler, our Trustee for membership has been busy with obtaining promotional items for prospective members and securing a new, modern, indoor banner for lodge use. You will see that promoted soon.

We’ve also formally established the Danish Sisterhood Disaster Relief Fund. Details on how distribution will be made will be coming soon.

Donations for that fund should be sent to Carol Faruolo.

Lastly, we all give our condolences to Karin Wasler and her family. Karin’s mother passed away the last day of our board meeting, which was a sad note to end on, and our hearts were all heavy for Karin.

Dear Sisters, November is, of course, the month of Thanksgiving. While I think a little more about the things I’m thankful for during this time of year, I try to remember these things and show thanks for them throughout the entire year. The things I’m thankful for don’t often change too much, but they’re always very important. I’d like to share some of these things with you.

In addition to being thankful for my family, my friends, my health, and my community, I am thankful for my heritage and I am thankful for the Sisterhood.

Our heritage makes us who we are.

Whether we are 100% Danish, children of Danish immigrants, or are further-flung descendants of Danes, we all have some connection to Denmark, and therefore some connection to one another. It is this connection that brings us together through the Danish Sisterhood of America.

I am thankful for being connected to so many wonderful people throughout the world.

I hear from sisters and Lodges every week and feel very lucky to be able to meet and learn more about each of you and your connections to Denmark. Denmark is the thing that has brought us all together, but it is each of us individually that has grown and strengthened our sisterly bonds with one another.

This Thanksgiving, remember to show thanks for your heritage, the Sisterhood, and the strong bonds that hold us together.

HAABETS FREMTID LODGE 78, TROY, NEW YORK

Eight of us gathered for lunch and meeting on October 14, 2017 at Testo’s Restaurant in Troy, NY. It was a wonderful sunny day with leaves just starting to turn their fall colors in our area. We also had 3 of our husbands join us for their usual gab fest.

We had lots of business to discuss, and plans to make. Judy Jensen, Secretary, read the e-mail from the EGC President looking for a lodge to host the Convention next year. We felt this would be too big an undertaking for our small group of Sisters. One of our Sisters, Lisa Hansen has been in the hospital this week. We wrote her a card and hope she will be on the mend real soon.

Future plans included our fall Medisterpolse dinner. We needed to change the venue this year and Judy and Harry Jensen graciously offered to host this event at their home. This will be held at noon on November 11th. Marilyn Dore has been busy planning the Christmas Party. This will be held on December 8th at the Van Schaick Country Club in Cohoes. It will be a dinner of choice and early plans look to be very exciting.

After completing our business meeting Marge Wheeler presented a little talk on the importance of Birthdays in Denmark. It was interesting to learn of their rules and traditions. We had placed flags over the doorway to lead the way to this special occasion. One of our Sisters, Margit Engel has a birthday in October so we honored her for this

special occasion. We placed a Danish flag at her place setting and thanked her for this “beautiful day”. It was interesting to learn about round birthdays and the big celebrations the birthday person must throw, inviting everyone to her birthday. Then of course, the most important etiquette surrounds the Queen. For at noon on April 16th of each year she and her family go out on the balcony at one of her castles and waves to the crowd. Anyone can be a part of this celebration as all we need to do, is wave back. We then enjoyed cup cakes to honor our birthdays.

October News Update from Lodge 100 The Oct. 5, 2017, meeting of Lodge #100 took place at Hope Lutheran Church at noon, with seven members present. Lunch was served by co-hostesses, Carol Schlaud and Kris Wiegert.

Meeting opened by vice-president, Carol Schlaud, in the absence of the president. The pledge of allegiance was recited by everyone.

The secretary had to leave because of an appointment, so the vice-president read the Aug. and Sept. minutes, which were approved as given. Treasurer’s report accepted as given. A list of the personal care products that had been brought to donate to the Department of Human Services was read by Dawn Grabitz.

The November meeting will take place at the church with pizza being purchased, and those present offered to complete the meal.

Cards were signed to be sent to Doris Scott in Hospice House and to Betty Waske, who is now living out of the area.

A discussion took place about plans for the MOO convention next May, which our lodge will be hosting. Committee will be meeting on these ideas. Meeting adjourned by vice-president, who also took notes for the secretary.

Report from Mt. Hood Lodge 81’s Mouse Reporter

One of my favorite days arrived today, the second Saturday of the month. And, if you couldn’t guess why, it is the day my Sister-ladies come to see me and have a meeting while they are here. Even more special, this month they have arrived bringing oodles of food, which means they are serving lunch when they finish their business talking.

The hardest part is waiting while the business takes shape, so I found myself a safe spot from which to listen in. There was one new face in the crowd today, a guest that Lisa brought, her name was Jenny Holden. She had a nice smile, I hope she will come back again.

President Ava began the meeting with roll call of the officers, and Secretary Marian continued by reading the bills. Everyone agreed they should be paid.

Secretary Marian read a letter from the National President which talked about all the terrible catastrophes such as fires and storms that have plagued the country in recent months, and that there may be funds set aside to help Sisters who have suffered losses from such things. Lodges would be able to contribute to such accounts, and there will be more news about this following a meeting of the National officers next month (I had heard from my cousin Flossie on Papa’s side about a terrible flood in her church in Florida).

The next topic was about Sisters who may be were sick, and it seems a lady named “Tulle” has moved. She hasn’t been at a meeting that I can recall, but some of the older members remember her and shared news of her. Then we learned that fires in California have claimed the home of a Sister named Stella Watson and her husband Stuart and 15 year-old son Samuel. Stella belongs to Lodge #126 in Petaluma. Our own Sister Jan made a motion that this lodge make a donation to Stella’s family, and after a lot of ideas came out, the motion was passed.

Bobbi and Cheryl went over the ScanFair plans to date, and they added more people to the list of workers. Members were reminded to place their orders for ScanFair goodies using the pre-order forms from the September issue of The Portland Dane. Ava had crafted red and white hearts in various stages of completion, and some of the ladies took them home for finishing touches: they will be part of the wares for sale at the big ScanFair.

I can see this will be a very big deal with all the planning going on.

No sooner will the December festivities be over and it will be time to make plans for that fun party in February called Fastelavn. Ava said we need to have a chair-person for that.

We learned of a lady named Christy Becker who has asked about joining the Sisterhood lodge, but her paperwork has not arrived yet.

This being October, there were several birthdays to celebrate: Betty McKinney and Charlene Jensen, who we sent birth-day vibes, and Lisa Johnson who got the full singing birthday salute.

As usual, this marked the end of the business meeting, and signaled the preparations of the highlight of my day, LUNCH! I nearly tripped over my apron strings trying to get into the kitchen. Wow, the counter was really full, but while the food looked yummy, there were strange names and scary decorations all over the place. Things like bugs, and bats, and frogs, and brains and swamp water. And those were just the names I could understand, the Danish names sounded even spookier. But, once I saw the Brothers and Sisters enjoying their dishes, I just closed my eyes and dug in too. I am happy to report that things are not always what they seem. My little corner is well-stocked now with bugs, bats, frogs and brains, plus a few unmentionables.

News from Frihed Lodge #153, Hartford, CT

The October 2017 meeting of Frihed Lodge #153 (Hartford CT) featured sharing all things Danish / Scandinavian. Most members of the lodge in attendance at the meeting brought something to share.

As each member discussed their item, the resounding theme was that we all wanted to choose something unusual.

Kim Renehan provided a Danish flag as well as information about it. Did you know the Dannebrog is the oldest European flag officially adopted in 1625? According to Danish legend, the Dannebrog descended from the skies during a battle in Estonia in 1219. She also shared a Royal Copenhagen stoneware pitcher. It looked like it might have been for wine as there was a small cherub open-mouthed with grapes under the spout. We found the dark brown color and style were atypical for what we normally think of as Danish porcelain.

Betty Titus brought tiny wooden shoes. They were black-painted wood with a metal strip attached via brads. The bottom featured two wooden blade type features. They were hollowed out to be used as actual shoes for a young child. Betty remembers her mom had them and thinks they might have originally belonged to her grandmother.

Jackie Smith brought a red glass bird. The bird was a gift from her daughter-in-law from a trip to study Scandinavian dairy farms for her job. Man-

ufactured by Toikka, the birds are available in several colors. While clear they are quite solid and deceptively heavy. These handmade, mouth-blown birds are made in Finland but are popular throughout modern Scandinavia.

Kendra Dubiel brought two tiny dolls, dressed in folk costumes, that belonged to her daughter as a girl. Kendra’s in-laws had given her daughter the small Polish doll to celebrate their heritage. Not too long after, at a local gift shop, Kendra found and purchased a similar Danish doll. Both dolls were on display that night.

Bente Sivertsen brought a Royal Copenhagen figurine “Swineherd” of a farmer with his pig. The sculptor was Christian Thomsen and the original was sculpted in 1907. It was a delightful, medium-sized piece that has been in her family for a while. Bente chose this one to bring because her family always had pigs on their farm.

Sarah Petersen brought the Bing and Grøndahl “Little Mother” figurine that she had won in a raffle at the DSS-EGC convention held in 2015. The figurine, designed by Ingeborg Plockross Irminger, shows a young girl holding a very cuddly small kitten in her shirt. Based on the markings on the bottom of the figurine we determined it is vintage 1948-1951.

While the family has several figurines, this is her first.

Lisa Christensen Petersen provided a commemorative Royal Copenhagen plate from 1907 that was not a typical Christmas plate. The front of the plate shows an image of a Danish postage stamp. Also provided was a copy of the stamp and additional information. It’s the oldest stamp series in Denmark having been designed in a contest in 1902 and is still in use today! It is the second oldest in the world. Most of the elements of the design were derived from the Danish coat of arms. The three broken wavy lines on the stamp represent the three main waterways in Denmark.

We all enjoyed this lively meeting with many interesting items. Please enjoy the picture of all our treasures.

Sad News from Vintergækken Lodge 168

Our sister Elsie Mae Lukens, passed away at the age of 97 on Friday October 6, 2017 in Bakersfield, CA. Elsie was a teacher in Taft, CA and touched many lives. She was a member of the Scandinavian Club in Bakersfield, and joined the Danish Sisterhood on 1/21/2016. Elsie came to meetings regularly and was a pleasure to talk with. We had celebrated her 97th birthday in February 2017 along with our 70th Anniversary of our lodge. She will be missed by all.

News from Flora Danica Lodge It’s been a busy year for our lodge in 2017. In January we held our officer installation and dinner for both the Sisterhood and Brotherhood lodges. We invite the Santa Barbara Lodges to attend and hold a joint installation. It’s a great way to stay in touch with their members and makes for a fun evening. Dinner is delicious with an abundance of beautiful Danish sandwiches along with herring and Aquavit. SKåL!!

Our officers this year are Past President Donna Ineman, President Janet Townsend, Vice-President Karen Voorhis, Secretary Pat Frederick, Treasurer Julie Vandecar, Guard Tone Anderson, Trustees: Marie Jaeger, Else Lassiter and Donna Ineman.

In April the Solvang Sisterhood and Brotherhood lodges hosted the annual California District Convention. Our Friday night reception was held at the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art. Delegates and guests toured the museum with its historically decorated rooms, current art exhibit and the Solvang diorama all while enjoying tasty appetizers and local wines. Our meetings and installation dinner/dance were held on Saturday at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall. We had a wonderful dinner prepared by our Brotherhood members, beautiful and unique raffle items from our sisters and enjoyed the best dancing music by the Agin Brothers. A big thank you to our delegates and guests for all their support and for the wonderful comments we received!

Our lodge is dark during June and July but that has been a good time to put plans

together for Danish Days. For many years the Sisterhood has set up a craft booth filled with handmade items from our members. The tourists and locals alike love them and often are ‘regulars’. Many of the crafts include the traditional Danish Christmas ornaments such as woven paper hearts, cross-stitch ornaments and cones, woven stars, crocheted hearts and yarn nisse to name a few. Some of our members have also made beautiful jewelry, fused glass items, a variety of wonderful holiday ornaments, planted pots, variety of greeting cards, large wooden painted nisse, etc.

Over the last few years we have designed a product unique to us to include in the booth and have available throughout the year. We have our Solvangopoly game, Aebleskiver kitchen towel and new tin woven-heart ornament w/card. We’re excited to say we had a very successful weekend, our best yet (weather was fantastic). As our main fundraiser, it allows us to contribute back to the community in the form of high school scholarships and donations to other organizations in need. We’ve been very fortunate to be able to continue this tradition for many years.

On that note, every November we put together our annual list of donations. However, this year, with so much devastation in the country due to the massive flooding and fires, we decided to start our donations early. So, at our October meeting, we felt this was the perfect time to embrace our good fortune by paying it forward and reaching out to the military and Direct Relief. The funds to the military will help pay for shipping packages to our troops overseas and the funds to Direct Relief will help cover the incidentals so badly needed by those who have lost everything in the floods and fires. We also heard from a couple of our members regarding fellow sisters and loved ones who have experienced losses in the Santa Rosa fires. It was so nice to see our sisters come together much like the reason the Sisterhood was really established for – helping others in the times of need.

Amber Lodge News Amber Lodge members enjoyed getting together in June for a Summer Solstice gathering at Nealna and Don Gylling’s home. Members enjoyed a potluck, presentation by Judy Anderson on the history of St. Hans Afton, and a bonfire.

As a newer Lodge member, I continue to learn from my fellow lodge members. This summer Nealna Gylling, Sharon Johnson, and Judy Anderson helped supply me with me with a variety of Scandinavian information. I used some of this information for a local Historical Society’s Summer Scandinavian Event. A highlight of my summer was working on The Scandinavian Rendezvous in Hewitt, Minnesota. Speakers at the event included Dr. Lawrence Denny who spoke on Vikings, Wendy Jacobson who spoke on Discovering Roots in Norway, and High School student Addison Neal whose Judy Anderson speaks at the July family hosted a Danmeeting. ish exchange student this last school year. It was the first time this event was held, and had a positive response from the local individuals who attended. I met other fellow Danes in the area, as well as Swedes and Norwegians. The Hewitt Historical Society is starting to compile the history of local Scandinavian families, and a 2nd Scandinavian Rendezvous is being planned for the summer 0f 2018.

At the July meeting, Judy Anderson gave an informative and well researched program on Danish Pastor N.F.S. Grundtvig. Attendees participated in the singing hymns as well as learned many things about Pastor Grundvig’s life and teachings.

We did not meet in August since members planned to participate in Aebleskiver Days in Tyler, MN. Participating in area Scandinavian Events can be a good way to continue to pass on our Danish Heritage as well as to promote the Danish Sisterhood News, November 2017

Danish Sisterhood in communities.

Another highlight of my summer was getting to go to Elk Horn, Iowa this summer. It was nice to be able to visit the Museum of Danish America as well as to see the Danish influence in both the towns of Kimball, and Elk Horn.

On a second visit through the area , my children got to see Elk Horn and to eat at the Flour Mill.

After a summer break in July and August we met again on September 16th.

As Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year with lots of special events, our lodge decided to meet at Lambton Heritage Museum to see the exhibits there and a special showing of Heritage Quilts.

Eight of us met at the museum on a beautiful Fall day and enjoyed it all.

Following this visit we went to a local Pub for lunch and a short meeting and discussed plans for upcoming meetings.

Some of our suggestions were: Danish celebrations (Holy Days etc.), Danish Food then & now, Review of and additions to our “Danish Connections� , Danish Royalty & Gruntvig plus a spring visit to a beautiful garden.

Our October meeting to be held in a restaurant in Port Huron with discussion about Christmas and a visit to a nearby Art Gallery.

Inge Rigmor McQueen was born in Aalborg, Denmark on June 9, 1936. She died on April 11, 2017 Our first meeting in Graham, WA. Tivoli Virtual Lodge #300 Musings COOKING UP A DANISH CONNECTION by 300 member Susanne Hohlen Monticello, Minnesota shohlen@uslink.net

The Danish American Heritage Society held its 40th anniversary conference in Chicago from October 5-7, 2017 themed Danish American Fusion, a Blending of Cultures. I had decided a few years back that I wanted to attend this conference given the fact it was within driving distance from Minneapolis.

Much in style with the Danish Sisterhood conventions, this is a gathering and place of social networking, meeting wonderful people, and most importantly an overload of intellectual stimulation. I am not implying at all to be smart or like to rub brain cells with the lecturers, both from Denmark and the US. Rather, the lectures are so diverse, bold and interesting appealing to a broad audience, making it hard to choose which classes to attend even.

In addition to attending the lectures,

I had also registered to be a vendor representing a Danish cook book amongst other things. This cook book became the subject of a conversation with a younger Danish lady from Wisconsin. Coming to find out that Majbritt is a Danish Sisterhood member as well.

It was very interesting to learn about Majbritt, also an immigrant having moved to the States as a child. Now a mother of two younger girls, they all joined the Sisterhood a few years back. It was so refreshing and rewarding becoming acquainted with Majbritt and to learn of her take on the Sisterhood organization and her daughters’ involvement as well and what they hope to gain from their membership belonging to a lodge.

The cook book and some greens did exchange hands eventually. Not sure if Majbritt and I will be cooking up a storm, but I am hoping that our brief encounter will not be our last either.

RESOLUTION

LODGE #19, OLYMPIA/TACOMA

Mary Frances Andersen made her way to Heaven on April 1, 2017. She was born In Winnipeg Canada and lived to become 96 years old. She spent her childhood years in Emerson, Manitoba. Her family moved to Minneapolis, MN when she was 15. There she trained to become a Nurse. While in train­ing, she met and married, LeRoy “Andy” Andersen. They were married in 1940 and moved to Tacoma, WA in 1943.

When time came for her to be certified as a Nurse, it was discovered she had married. She was denied her certificate because she was married. At that time, married women in the State of Minnesota and many other states as well, could not go into nursing or many other professions (teaching, air­line stewardess, etc.). Fortunately, those laws have changed.

Since Mary was from Canada, snow country, she excelled in winter sports. She enjoyed ice skating, skiing, and many other “cold” sports. She taught her

children and friends these sports as well. She was quite artistic and loved specially to use water colors.

She provided many water color pieces to family and friends. Mary belonged to several community and church or­ganizations. As a neighbor said, “Mary was always on the go”.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother. Her life was long, and full and she was blessed with a loving family and friends. She loved her family and eve­ryone she met, finding joy in serving others. She is survived by her brother John Helm, her children Jim Andersen, Mary Ann Groff, Joy Bartel and Allen Andersen.

There were 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. They all are a pretty loving group.

Our Charter will be draped, and Mary Andersen will be honored at our next meeting.

From our Historian, Amy Larsen Have you ever wondered about the emblems of office that get placed around officers’ necks during Installations? I hadn’t been in the Sisterhood very long when I attended my first Installation. I remember watching each officer being presented with the emblem of their office. I had no idea what they meant, but enjoyed the ceremony and the long tradition it represented. The installation ceremony included in our Constitution and By-Laws (sometimes referred to as the” Long Form”) allows each person to be reminded of their responsibilities as they are invested with the emblem of their office. A wonderful tradition to observe. But have you ever reflected on the meaning of our emblems? Let’s take a look at each one.

The Past President receives a Star, for they have guided the lodge, district, or Sisterhood, just as the stars provide guidance.

They may fill the position of President if neither the current President nor Vice President is available and are available to consult with the current President.

The Treasurer’s emblem is Crossed Keys, representing their management of funds and reflects the expectation to keep accurate financial records.

The Trustee’s emblem is a Safe. This represents their care of the property of the lodge Sometimes this can also mean to take care of members, such as sending cards to those who need a lift or are ill.

The Marshal’s emblem is an Anchor. The Marshall distributes the emblems, assists during the initiation of new members, and obeys the orders of the President.

A Guard may or may not be an officer. Their emblem is a sword, and they follow the instructions of the President. In the early days of the Sisterhood there were two doors that were entered to get into a meeting. The inner and outer door each had a guard, so both the single sword and the crossed swords symbolize the office of guard.

The President’s emblem is the Scales of Justice. This represents the President’s duty to uphold rules and regulations as they carry out the business of the Sisterhood and Lodge.

The Vice President’s emblem is Crossed Gavels, signifying their duty to fill the President’s position when they are unavailable, and assist the President with their duties.

Each officer takes part in the Mission of the sisterhood – to strengthen, maintain and preserve the Danish heritage and traditions for future generations. Their emblems connect each officer to our history, preserving our organization and heritage.

The Crossed Quills of the Secretary’s emblem represent their duty to keep records and to attend to all correspondence.
