Summer is nearly here! We get brief teases of the season change and look forward to all the typical festivities the warm weather brings out.

This seems like a good time (it’s always a good time) to work on membership expansion.

Speaking personally, regarding my own lodge, which is technically the largest in the Sisterhood, but we are anything but large when it comes to our ‘Danishness’ and the community. We’ve not promoted the Sisterhood in years, and it shows.

We have lost a lot of the energy to really be active and are missing the ‘young energetic ones.’

We have plenty of young members, but what is missing? We need more that brings out our culture, yet who’s going to chair it? That seems to be the problem. Where are the members and their energy?

We talk about wanting more members, but I wonder if anyone else has the same situation I have. I have a very dear friend who, following her divorce, has ‘disappeared.’ It was mentioned to her ex-husband who said, “Oh, she’s kind of mad at you. She has gone to several of your activities, brought food, and drove a long way to get there, but you never once asked her to join.” Boy, talk about feeling terrible. Here I was thinking that she’d been to several events and never asked me once about wanting to join. Wow… what was I thinking? How many would join if we just asked?

Do we have others that wonder if we think we’re too good to have them involved? Well, I need to fix this with my friend if it’s even possible, and I certainly will ask folks in the future. What’s the worst thing they could say, no?

If you have any special membership drive activities, ads, etc., please send them to me. I’d like a fresh look at some ideas, and I’m sure I’m not the only one so I will share them in future issues of the DSS News.

Dear Sisters, Summer is almost here! I hope you are all getting ready for Sankthansaften (a celebration of the Summer solstice) next month, gathering bonfire wood and maybe even making a witch to burn!

Here, I’ve been busy traveling for work, visiting family and friends, and trying to enjoy the beautiful spring weather. At the end of April, I travelled to my hometown of Racine, WI to attend the Midwest District’s Luncheon as I am a member of the Kenosha Lodge #20. It was such a wonderful afternoon, talking to fellow sisters, having a lovely meal, and viewing a presentation on Denmark during WWII.

Looking forward, I’m anxious to be getting out on my bicycle (like a good Dane!) and exploring all of the bicycle trails in and around the Twin Cities area. I’m also looking forward to going to an upcoming Danish festival at the Danish American Center in Minneapolis and enjoying Danish culture and food. I’ll be sure to report back on it!

And finally, I’m looking ahead to the upcoming Danish Sisterhood Newsletters. I’ve recently been getting emails from Sisters all over the nation with some questions. I’d like to start a little column called Ask the Editor. This is how it’ll work: you send in a question. It can be about Danish culture, the Danish language, Danish heritage, Sisterhood history, etc. And I’ll do some research and find the answer! Then I’ll post the question and answer in the newsletter for everyone to learn!

Update from Katherine Lodge #20 The Sisters gathered for our monthly meeting April 19th at Festival Foods Community Room (Somers). Fourteen sisters were in attendance.

The officers gave their reports, committee chairs summarized various events that are being planned in the upcoming months. The Bake Sale on April 2nd was very successful with $618.00 earned for the Scholarship Fund. Then Bette Lasch, our president, summarized the relationship between the National Sisterhood, the regional Midwest District Sisterhood and the local lodges. Each lodge offers fellowship and shares Danish traditions and program ideas for other lodges.

On April 29, Katherine Lodge hosted the Midwest District Luncheon (odd year gathering of membership). The event took place at the Birchwood Restaurant in Kenosha. Everyone enjoyed delicious food, coffee, and camaraderie.

Our National Treasurer Carol Faruolo joined us and gave a short presentation on what the National Board is up to. Our guest speaker at the luncheon was Kirsten Weiss. She spoke about

Special appreciation to our National Treasurer Carol Faruolo for coming to visit with us.

She brought a wonderful collection from the Butikken with some new items. Now, we all know how to make frikadeller and will not forget the recipe.

Milwaukee lodge #15 donated the raffle prizes including a beautiful Danish Tea set.

Thanks to Kirsten Weiss from Milwaukee Lodge #15, who did a very exiting and educational presentation on the Danish resistance and the saving of the Jews.

I hope that we will have a great year and if you have any ideas to an additionalgathering would be great.

I suggested a trip to Peterson Glass Blowing in Mundelein, IL, where we maybe could do schedule a class where we could make our own.

The upcoming Sisterhood calendar includes: May 17th – Sisterhood meeting 6:30 pm Festival Foods Community Room (Somers). Reading of the By-Laws updates, approval of the membership. There will also be installation of new members at this meeting. The program will involve making a Danish craft.

June 21st – The Summer Solstice is a Danish tradition that is celebrated every year with a gathering and bonfire. June’s meeting will celebrate this summer holiday by meeting at the Nielsen house in Racine. Everyone is welcome including friends, family and spouses. Bring lawn chairs, a dish to pass and a beverage. Hot dogs and smores will be provided.

Dike Lodge #176 Dike, Iowa We were glad to be able to meet again in April after several months of winter weather! Our fabulous cooks prepared some delicious aebleskiver for the meal and other wonderful dishes were added by other members. Our guest speaker was a senior at the local Dike-New Hartford High School. Linda Roncoroni is an exchange student from Italy. We enjoyed her views of her year in Iowa. She has been involved in several different activities that were new to her, but she embraced them enthusiastically. When asked if she had many surprises in coming to the United States, she told us it was just as she expected (based on “High School Musical” movies). Seeing lockers in the hallways and the athletic activities met her expectations! She has also been able to take several trips around the U.S. It was a delight to get to hear her impressions.

Next month we will be celebrating our 55th anniversary and will get to enjoy much more time together now that the weather is cooperative!

Amber Lodge #186 Brainerd, MN The April meeting of Amber Lodge, #186 was held April 8, 2017, at the Evelyn Matthies Studio in the Franklin Arts Center. Laurie Cappellin started the morning with a brief overview of Danish Resistance to the German occupation of Denmark during WWII. Laurie highlighted several key dates and events of the period. Along with that, she shared her personal connection and interest in the topic as her father was a US veteran of WWII and had cousins in Denmark who participated in the Resistance. We then watched the movie, A Day In October, which told the story of a Jewish family in Copenhagen; their involvement in the Resistance through their eventual escape to Sweden as the Nazi’s targeted Jewish families.

We shared a potluck lunch during the viewing. After the movie, we concluded the meeting with a brief business meeting.

LODGE # 100 MAY MEETING Northstar Lodge met May 4, 2016, at Hope Lutheran Church with 5 members present. Co-hostesses, Carol Schlaud and Kris Wiegert served a delicious pizza and salad lunch.

Meeting was called to order by vice-president, Carol Schlaud. Minutes of last two meetings approved as read. Treasurer’s report approved as read. Correspondence gone over.

Discussion on trying to get a new family to support who has younger children. June 4th was picked for our 110th Anniversary Dinner at Stone Lodge in Port Sanilac, at 1pm.

Carol Schlaud gave a report about attending, along with her two aunts, a Sisterhood meeting in California while they were out there during the winter. MOO District Convention is May 5 & 6th, and Carol and Kris are planning to attend.

Tivoli Virtual Lodge #300 News TULIPS – A SIGN OF SPRING by 300 member Susanne Hohlen Monticello, Minnesota shohlen@uslink.net

More than likely most of us associate tulips with Holland and the massive colorful fields pleasing to the eye and garden lovers all over.

I love flowers despite my lack of green thumb capability. My gardening is limited to two planters on my 8 x 8” patio offering me joy from May until October trying my best to remember watering them. So far my investment has paid off.

Having grown up in Denmark, the first sign of Spring was to see the tulip emerge and peeking its stem up above the wintery soil.

Welcome Spring. As for Minnesota, well, we all know spring comes a little late around here, like May or June. Do not underestimate this colorful, tough early perennial, being a sure sign of new life and change of seasons, despite its short blooming season.

Seeing this colorful plant/flower makes you feel rejuvenated and inspired leaving behind the winter hibernation ready to tackle new chores and enjoying the outside. Tulips come in an incredible variety of colors, height, and flower shapes.

The tulips are not an invasive plant, doesn’t grow unless the bulb is planted. Much as the Sisterhood – we don’t grow either un-

less we get new members. As with the tulips, there needs to be certain growing conditions present in order for the plant to survive and prosper.

What makes you as a member grow and prosper one may ask? What are you hoping to gain qua your membership in order to bloom and become a “perennial” member.

Do you as a 300 member need a lot of Miracle Gro to bloom every year?

We would love to hear from you and your perspective on your membership. So lets keep that planter handy, get some good potting soil planting the bulb with gentle hands and we will all be emerging every year.

Tivoli #300 & Individual Members Constitutions To all our Tivoli and Individual Members: Recently we have had a couple of our Tivoli members request a copy of the Danish Sisterhood Constitution. A very valid request. Every member of the Sisterhood is entitled to a copy of the constitution, yet not all members wish to have one. A supply is provided to the lodges to distribute to its members following each National Convention, and more are available when requested. However, we realize this practice does not help our Tivoli and Individual members.

News from Sunshine Lodge #181 Sunshine Lodge #181 of Holiday, Florida is pleased to welcome Linda Morris to our Lodge.

Linda brings with her new ideas and her admiration for all things Danish. At our February 12 meeting, we held a Memorial Service for our sister, Edith Andersen who passed away on 2-1317. The solemn service was held in the beautiful surroundings of sister Hedvig’s secluded garden. Members expressed cherished memories of Edith, among them her talent for porcelain painting. Edith will be remembered fondly by the sisters who knew her. April 9th we held our first meeting at the home of sister Millie Anderson’s daughter, Chryl Thompson. Four original members were present (Janet Proper, Betsy Hunter, Alice Burak, Tim Proper). Betsy Hunter read the minutes from the first meeting of the Ldoge which took place April 5, 1987. Betsy was president at the time. We look forward to another 30 years of Sisterhood.

Requesting/processing a funeral benefit for a certificate holding member.

Address Changes

We felt it would be helpful to the Lodge secretaries and member’s families if I posted the instructions for requesting a funeral benefit.

When one of our certificate holding members passes away, their beneficiaries are entitled to their funeral benefit. The member must have been a current/active member (dues paid) at the time of their death for the benefit to be valid.

The funds will be issued to the beneficiary noted in the member’s record with the National Secretary. If the noted beneficiary passed away prior to the member, the check will be issued to the Estate of…

Many lodge secretaries/treasurers manage the request to process a funeral benefit for the family.

The process:

• Send a certified copy of the member’s

death certificate

• Provide contact information of the bene ficiary or executor of the estate

• National Secretary verifies valid mem bership and records the members’

passing
