Sindy Mikkelsen, National President Just as I thought winter was never going to come for us on the left coast, here it is. As I’m writing this article, I’m packing my things for our semi-annual board meeting, which is taking place in Vancouver, Canada. I’ve had to purchase a few warmer items, as the highs are about the same as the lows here in California and we thought that was cold. All of us on the board are anxious to get together. I’ve been really blessed with an amazing team of ladies that work hard, enjoy each other’s company, and are so incredibly creative. We also look forward to sharing some time with the members of the Vancouver lodge.

One of the tasks at this meeting is to put together our presentation materials for the District Conventions coming up, most of which are in the spring. It’s important that we share relevant information and make the time and effort a Board Member makes in attending the convention worth the Sisterhood’s investment in that visit. Another thing that adds value is when the District Delegates receive that information, they can bring it back to and share it with their lodges. The entire purpose in having delegates is so they can learn and bring back to the lodge, so they too can share in the knowledge gained. Too often we provide information only to find out that no one in the lodge is aware because the delegate came home from convention and that convention bag is about as far as the information went. Please do share what you receive at convention!

And in closing, I’ve started to see a few convention-hosting lodges reach out to National so they can share an invitation with the Tivoli Lodge #300 members that might live within a reasonable range to attend the convention, which we applaud. For privacy sake, we don’t share the names and addresses of any of our members with anyone. However, we will help facilitate this invitation. If your lodge wishes to invite #300 members, please feel free to contact Karin Wasler, Trustee, and she will help in that effort and mail your materials to the members herself.

Lastly, thank you to those that send me notes and emails. I really enjoy hearing from you with your kind words and suggestions. They are appreciated!

I just finished writing up my annual Editor’s report to send along to the National Board for their Spring meeting.

While writing my report, I went through the past year’s Danish Sisterhood Newsletters and took a good hard look at them. Wow! So much Happy March Birthday to: has happened in the past year.

I also took note of things we covered such Title: Den Gamle By as historical information, special stories about Region: Aarhus, DK Denmark, Danish figures, cultural aspects of our Photographer: Karen Pedersen Voorhis, Flora Danica Sisterhood, and many other things. It was exciting Lodge to go back through all of those issues and see My daughter, Katie, and I had a wonderful trip through what we’ve done–and think about where we can Denmark, visiting family. News from Lodge # 86, Philadelphia Our first meeting of the New Year took place Saturday afternoon, January 20 in Media, PA. Perfect January weather, clear skies and no threat of snow--Annette hosted our meeting in her home. We started with the business portion of the meeting discussing correspondence, the upcoming EGC convention in Groton CT and the book scholarship our lodge gives to help with college expenses. Any Lodge #86 member or child of a member would qualify after submitting an essay to include future plans, goals and your connection to Denmark.

Lodge discussion included sisters having a difficult time, how we as a lodge can provide assistance to our sick and needy sisters.

All 2017 officers will remain in office for the 2018 term; we will have nominations for new officers in November 2018. New officers will be installed at our January 2019 lodge meeting.

Current Happenings in Denmark is always a fun topic at our lodge meetings. Denmark, a global leader on climate and energy policies, created a recreational area out of its recycled trash. Inge shared a very interesting article she recently read in The Danish Pioneer Newspaper about a recycling plant building a ski slope from recycled trash. The architect is Bjarke Ingels.

Located in an industrial facility on the outskirts of Copenhagen, the Amager Resource Centre (ARC) has been providing recycled energy to its local community since 1970. The centre

stands as a significant ecological landmark for Denmark, its energy output playing a crucial role in creating a sustainable environment for the eco-conscious country’s future generations.

Last year alone the ARC processed the refuse of one million Danish citizens, and with the population of Copenhagen rapidly growing, there has been increasing demand for a more socially intelligent and ecologically considerate way to tackle the waste recycling process.

Enter the Amager Bakke – the newest addition to the ARC complex and part of the solution to this problem. It is set to open in 2017, and when it does, it is predicted to produce heat for 160,000 homes and electricity for 62,500 of them, aiding Copenhagen’s ambitious goal to become a carbon neutral city by 2025.

Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the Bakke will also offer a playful, recreational twist. Standing 85m in height, the plant will become Copenhagen’s tallest ‘mountain’, as its roof has been creatively designed as a ski slope for the use of the local community. The design also integrates a number of green areas, which residents can use for running, walking and hiking.

News from Sunshine Lodge #181, Holiday, FL. Our February meeting was held in historic Tarpon Springs. We were all happy to welcome our latest new sister, Cheryl Thompson. Our Lodge had been losing memberships due to advancing ages and illnesses; but we’re pleased with the recent additions of three new sisters.

(Emma Jensen, Linda Morris and Cheryl Thompson). They are bringing new ideas and enthusiasm to our lodge.

hearts that could be made into shamrocks! We are very excited about the new crafts we are learning.

Linda Morris will be our delegate to the EGC convention and Janet Proper will be there as the EGC treasurer. Our Lodge will be in charge of the basket raffle. Our basket will be themed “Summer Nights”.

90th EGC Convention in Groton, CT The Eastern General Committee (EGC) convention will be held this year in Groton, CT at the Best Western Olympic Inn April 13-15, 2018. Friday evening we will be hosting a wine and cheese welcome reception for all delegates and guests. The convention will begin on Saturday April 14 at 9 AM. Saturday afternoon the convention will break for lunch in Mystic, CT. After lunch we will spend a leisurely afternoon enjoying the shops in Mystic. Arrangements can be made to tour the Mystic seaport on Saturday and the Mystic Aquarium on Sunday. Saturday evening we will return to the hotel for a catered dinner banquet and installation of EGC officers. The convention will end on Sunday. At the convention we will raffle plenty of prizes and gift baskets donated by our EGC lodges. Updates from Lodge #3, Davenport, IA

Due to the winter weather, Lodge #3 did not meet in January, but there were 8 members who met for our February meeting. Our March 8, 2018 meeting will be held at the Best Western Plus SteepleGate Inn, 100 West 76th Street, Davenport, Iowa 52806 at 11:30am.

Our 2018 officers are: President, Sarah Bengtson, VP Mary Swanson, Secretary Paulette Fisher, Treasurer Doris Johansen and we gave a big “THANK YOU” to Sue Carol Vroman, our past President, for all her good deeds that have kept our Lodge active for so many years!

Our meeting centered around planning for the Danish Sisterhood of America Heartland District Convention which will be held at the Best Western Plus SteepleGate Inn, 100 West 76th Street, Davenport, Iowa 52806 from September 14-16, 2018.

We hope to see many of you there, to enjoy all our Quad City area has to offer from the LeClaire Twilight riverboat on the Mississippi river, to the Rock Island Arsenal visitors center and museum, to the Moline

John Deere Pavilion to the Jens Jensen landscaping at the Rock Island, Hauberg Civic Center, Augustana College in Rock Island to the Figge Art Museum and Putnam Museum in Davenport and more. We look forward to seeing you at the convention!

Our April 12th meeting will be at the Clinton County Historical Museum at 11:30 and Jan Hansen will talk about the Danish monarchy then, and we will have more planning for the Heartland District Convention.

The bald eagles are delightful to see here on the Mississippi this winter, but we are all looking forward to spring 2018!

News from Fjelddronning Lodge #131, Ferndale California After a quiet summer, our lodge has taken part in a few events. In September we sold Cookies at the town’s Yard Sale. This event brings many people to Ferndale as many residents have a sale for the public. We had a table on main street and shoppers stopped by to purchase Danish Cookies.

In December the Sisterhood, Brotherhood and Dania lodges had their annual joint Christmas party. We have a catered dinner, followed by a “pirate” gift exchange. Nearly everyone participates and it really gets wild. After a gift is opened, it’s fair game for someone to steal it. You never know what you’ll end up with. Some are very happy and some a bit disappointed. So much fun.

January our Sisterhood and Brotherhood officers were installed. Doing the honors were California District Presidents Donna and Rick Inemann from Solvang. The highlight of the day was a Brotherhood presentation of a 50 year membership pin to Todd Sanborn, given by DB President Jay Pedersen. Todd is the 4th generation of his

family to receive their pin. His Great Grandfather, Grandfather and Father were all members of Gimle Lodge #95 in Ferndale, and all were Past Presidents of the lodge.

As Convention time approaches we hope to send a delegate to Los Angeles.

We are a very small lodge, but hanging on.

We do most activities with the Brotherhood and they are most generous in treating us to dinner meetings throughout the year. If anyone is traveling in the far North Coast of California, please stop by to visit. We have many visitors to our town and everyone seems to love it.

FEBRUARY AT THE DANISH SISTERHOOD DAGMAR LODGE#4, Chicago, IL Winter, and especially February, is turning out to be a hectic time for the Danish Sisterhood Dagmar Lodge #4 in Chicago. Already the 3rd of February, we started the month with something truly Danish, baking fastelavnsboller.

The sisters, together with some guest help, had a successful and “hyggelig” day, baking and eating together at Bente Rasmussen’s home. This is becoming a tradition as we also did this the last few years. The fastelavnsboller were for two events that the Dagmar Lodge were part of in February.

ELMHURST PUBLIC LIBRARY CULTURE CLUB EVENT The first event was on February 8, 2018, which was a Danish culture sharing program at the Elmhurst Public Library. Our very own sister, Bente Rasmussen, was a presenter with the help of another sister Jeanne, and her husband, Brad Wilcoxon, who are Elmhurst residents. There was a good group of about 60 people who attended Bente’s presentation on Denmark. There was a display of the Danish Pioneer, Danish Home and the Danish organizations. To top it off, Fastelavnsboller and Danish butter cookies were served. In a real Danish tradition, like formiddagskaffe, the library provided coffee which was truly appreciated by everyone on a winter day.

According to Meredith Bazzoli, the Outreach Specialist for Adult Services at the library, there were very positive responses to the program, citing that all evaluators of the program checked “loved it” for the overall rating, which is the highest rating. Some of the comments to the program itself were: “This was a great program.”, “Nice to have a presentation from someone actually from 7

Denmark!”, and “Bente was a wonderful presenter- great combo of facts, history, geography, and photos.” Moreover, all checked all the positive descriptors for Bente as the presenter, describing her as friendly and welcoming, being organized, easy to understand, entertaining, informative, and led at an appropriate pace.

We are so proud of our sister, Bente, who in her usual fashion as in everything she does, shined in sharing the Danish Culture.

To give us an idea of the Danish culture sharing program the Elmhurst Public Library had, here is a flyer.

The flyer, as well as the program, are a great presentation of all aspects of Danish Culture from the literary, the cultural and culinary.

2018 Danish Sisterhood Island Tour

DAGMAR LODGE FEBRUARY MEETING AND DAAC FASTELAVNS PARTY ON 2/18/18 The second event of the lodge was its official meeting on Sunday, February 18 at the Knights of Columbus in Arlington Heights, IL. During the meeting we honored Solskin and presented her a pin for being a member for 25 years. On the other end of the spectrum, we welcomed Dorte, a new member, as she was inducted into the Dagmar Lodge.

100th Birthday Celebration for Ruth Yankus Member of Katherine Lodge 20, Kenosha, WI

Tivoli Time

The Danish Sisterhood Tivoli Lodge #300 is a virtual lodge made up of Sisters from across the nation who do not have a local lodge to attend in person. Each month, the DSN will feature a new or existing member of the Tivoli Lodge to help us all get to know these wonderful Sisters!

Ruth (Sorensen) Yankus will celebrate her 100th birthday on March 26th.

She has been a member of Kenosha, Lodge 20 for over 50 years. In 2016, she was honored with the generation award with 5 generations in the Danish Sisterhood.

She was active in Lodge 20 in many ways over the years: Aebleskiver breakfast, bake sale, made crafts for their sales. When she moved to Brookfield she then started attending Lodge 15 meetings and helped with Scandinavian Festival.

Both of her parents were from Horsens, Denmark, which she did get to visit with her daughter, Ruth Ann in 1978. She visited Tivoli and Legoland, met cousins, saw her father’s home and the church where her parents were baptized. It was a memorable trip with lots packed in the two weeks.

She still remembers her mother taking the bus and meeting her friends at the “Hall” for Lodge 20 meetings.

Currently she is at Luther Manor in Wauwatosa, WI were she has lived for the past three years. Ruth is still active going on day outings, baking, participating in music programs and crocheting.

We do the Danish traditions at Christmas and it’s always fun to see who finds the almond in the Risengrod. Then who ever finds the almond gets a pig which is made out of marzipan.

If you had to choose one thing to do in your spare time, what would it be?

I love sitting by the beach/pool in the sun just enjoying the warmth!

What is a Denmark or Danish-related memory you’d like to share?

I have many Danish related memories, but something I cherish is my memory of going to Denmark to see my grandfather in Silkeborg.

Then we would get on the Hjejlen boat and go to Himmelbjerget.

HISTORIAN’S FINDINGS: HOW IT ALL BEGAN When Kristine Hemmingsen founded the Danish Sisterhood of America on December 15, 1885, at her home in Negaunee, Michigan, it was in response to a lack of opportunities for women to participate in organizations created by men.

Many women’s organizations were created in this era, some as charitable organizations, some to promote voting rights for women, and others, like the Sisterhood, were created as havens for ethnic groups looking to preserve their culture and traditions. The 1800’s in the US brought a huge wave of immigrants from all over Europe, and these immigrants sought the fellowship of their own cultures.

The Danish Brotherhood had been formed in 1882 in Omaha, Nebraska, combining five men’s Danish groups in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.

It was a fraternal society and a secret one, and there were restrictions to membership for men, and women were not included at all. The Brotherhood was

intended to provide death insurance and to preserve Danish culture and traditions. Of course,women had the same needs as men in this regard.

One day a friend of Kristine Hemmingsen, a young mother, passed away suddenly, leaving a bereaved husband and children to not only grieve, but to come up with the money to pay for her burial and final expenses. Mrs. Hemmingsen knew about the Brotherhood and its death benefit for its members, as her husband was a member of a Lodge. She founded the Danish Sisterhood to provide funeral benefits for its members. Sadly, her husband was the first to take advantage of this benefit when Kristine passed away giving birth to a stillborn child a year later. The death benefit was $11.25.

Our organization has evolved over the years into a group which builds fellowship among women and men, and seeks to preserve and teach Danish culture and traditions. It is still a haven for Danes and those interested in Danish culture, as Kristine’s own home was a haven for Danes. I think Kristine Hemmingsen would be proud of us .
