Christina Sallee, National President June 5th is Grundlovsdag (Constitution Day) in Denmark. Danes have been celebrating this day since 1849 where Grundloven was first signed into law by King Frederik VII, and Denmark went from absolutism(monarchy) to democracy.

Grundloven, much like the American Constitution, gives each individual rights that cannot be disputed or overruled, chief among them freedom of speech, freedom of association and religious freedom.

Grundloven has been amended three times.

First in 1866 to remove policies set in place for Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg who now after the 2nd Schleswig War were all part of Prussia. The biggest quarrel was about voting rules which in the added policies favored the Conservative, but originally favored the Liberal. The compromise was to have Folketinget (Danish Parliament) follow the original rules and Landstinget (Country Counsel) follow the added policies rules.

Second in 1915 to add the rights to vote for women and servants.

Third in 1953 to include the rights of female succession to the throne (King Frederik IX only had girls of which Queen Margrethe II is the oldest). Landstinget(Country counsel) was abolished, and parliamentary customs became a part of the Danish Parliament. This is also when Greenland went from being a colony to being part of Denmark.

I hope you display Dannebrog proudly on June 5th, and think about all the work that made Grundloven possible.

On a side note June 5th is also Father’s Day in Denmark, so take some time out of your day to think of him or, if possible, give him a call or visit.

In closing, I hope that you are all doing well.

I personally have had to “smell the roses” several times to invigorate, renew and cheer myself up. Keep remembering all of the small wonders we experience everyday and stay close to the people you care about.

Dear Sisters, June is the month of Grundlovsdag and Sankt Hans Aften (summer solstice celebration) in Denmark.

Last year, I started a summer solstice celebration with friends and honored the Danish traditions of Sankt Hans Aften. I was hoping for it to be a new annual tradition. While we likely still won’t be able to gather together, I still plan on celebrating the solstice with friends. How? Well, I’m still working out the plans but I’m thinking about sharing recipes and maybe even making some “to-go” packages for friends that include remoulade, fried onions, agurkesalat, and more so that they can top their hot dogs properly and sit around a fire at home. I know I’ll have a campfire going and will raise a glass of akvavit.

It will be different, but the tradition will continue. And maybe next year we’ll be able to all gather again!

I hope you are all doing well and that the Danish Sisterhood News can bring you a little enjoyment and Sisterly love during these difficult times.

Resolution In Memory of Dorothy “Kris” Helgeson, July 3, 1929 - April 19, 2020

able to be with her mom all week -- holding her hand, talking to her, tucking her in a special blanket -- as well as when Kris passed away, very peacefully, at 4:30 pm on Sunday, April 19. “Now she is able to be with my dad,” Marie said. A memorial service for Kris will be held some time in the future, when people are able to gather together and celebrate her long, full, caring, and capable life, and all that she meant to her family and to her family at church.

Kris and her husband Ray were pillars of the Irving Park Lutheran Church congregation for years.

Rest eternal grant her Oh Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon her.

Dorothy Helgeson, 90, known to many as “Kris,” died on Sunday, April 19th. Kris has been a member of Dagmar Lodge #4 in Chicago for 34 years.

Kris had been living in a memory care facility for more than six years and remained physically strong, even earning a fond descriptor: “She’s a great Dane,” but in her last eight days her condition changed. With the nation sheltering in place and the elderly especially at risk, the facility had been closed to visitors for more than a month, but the hospice workers made an exception for Kris in her last days. Kris’s daughter, Marie Grunst, was

California District Scholarship Winner Announced novel entitled Moon and Sun. She intends to continue her academic pursuits in English literature, drama, and museum studies. Ava is a member of the Princess Marie Lodge #68 along with her mother and sister. She admires the traditional Danish values represented by the Sisterhood and celebrates the organization’s mission of community building and appreciation for one’s family origins. Congratulations Ava!

The 2020 California District Scholarship Committee is excited to announce the winner of this year’s $500 scholarship.

Ava Slocum is finishing her senior year at San Marino High School with high honors. She will attend Columbia University in New York beginning this fall. She has excelled in the areas of the humanities, drama and English literature, having been editor in chief of her school’s literary and art magazine for 4 years. She is a volunteer at The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens and a summer intern for the San Marino Community Theater. In additional to being a National Merit Finalist, she is a published author of a young adult literary fiction

News from Danish Sisterhood Dagmar Lodge #4 In memory of his mother, Nancy Nyholm, and in honor of Mother’s Day, Harry Nyholm Jr. created beautiful flower arrangements for all of The Danish Home of Chicago residents. The colorful flowers were presented to The Danish Home residents during a special Champagne Brunch on Friday, May 8, 2020, during The Danish Home’s Mother’s Day celebration. Nancy was very involved at The Danish Home of Chicago as a Women’s Auxiliary board member, longtime Danish Home volunteer, and a Danish Sisterhood Local and National Officer. The Danish Home of Chicago thanks Harry for his generous and thoughtful gift for The Danish Home residents.

Updates from Ellen Lodge #21, Denver, CO The year 2020 has definitely brought many surprises, along with a whole new way of life. Four months ago the term “Social Distancing” wasn’t even on our radar. Now it’s our new normal. I do hope you are all following the recommendations of the medical experts to do your part in keeping you, your family, friends and neighbors safe.

Before we had to start limiting our exposure Ellen Lodge was able to have our January Board meeting and our first members meeting in February. That seems so long ago now. A big goal of ours this year was to find community projects we could get involved in, not only monetarily, but also physically. Our new treasurer was also working on a budget for 2020. As so many other things, ideas have been shelved until we meet again.

At our February meeting, Sister Lynne McEarchen, gave a very interesting report on Emil (Hansen) Nolde, one of the first Expressionist painters. Lynne’s article is included in the May issue of the DS News.

Since monthly meetings are impossible right now, our lodge has started a weekly newsletter called “Ellen’s Corner”. It’s one way of keeping connected and to help us get through house confinement. I have taken on the responsibility of collecting everyone’s emails, compiling them and sending them out to all the

members. It’s interesting to hear what everyone is doing to get through this unprecedented time.

First off was changing vacation plans: cancelling or rescheduling trips. Others are knitting, working on puzzles, heritage, playing games, organizing their house, taking walks, exercising with online apps, arts and crafts...watching shows on TV: travel, opera, music, art. There’s also a little binge watching of “complete seasons” of favorite TV series. Some of our ladies have been busy making hats for nurses and masks for essential workers, family and friends.

It’s amazing to me how quickly local and national news, talk shows, etc., adapted to working from their home without losing a step. We owe so much to them for keeping us informed.

But the ones we really need to thank and pray for are those on the front line: medical staff, cleaning staff, grocery workers, mail persons, trash haulers, truck drivers…

This is such a volatile time right now.

Please stay in and stay well. Thoughts and prayers are coming to each and every one of you.

Tivoli Lodge #300 Update Our monthly update on activities for our own virtual lodge. We gather every second Thursday of the month using Zoom technology. See contact information at the end of the article.

On Thursday, May 14, 2020, we witnessed a fabulous moment in the history of the Danish Sisterhood of America. For our May Online Gathering we had two special guests join our virtual lodge meeting and help us with a longstanding Danish Sisterhood tradition of welcoming members into the Sisterhood.

Tivoli Lodge #300 held its first ever membership initiation and the first virtual membership initiation in the history of the Danish Sisterhood of America.

After we all introduced ourselves and shared what our Danish heritage means to each of us personally, Past President, Sindy Mikkelsen officially and symbolically opened our lodge for business and displayed a heart on an open constitution. Our National President, Christina Sallee, then lead us in a very touching initiation ceremony. Each of us had the chance to place our left hands over our hearts, raise our right hands and take the pledge, just like so many Sisters have done before us. Our very own John Rasmussen

helped us celebrate the momentous occasion by leading us in a toast and a few songs from the old country.

For many of us who have never had a local lodge, this was our first member initiation ceremony and a great bonding moment for the sisters and the brothers of our virtual lodge.

Hygge Lodge #188 of Enumclaw 2019 Outstanding Sister With a unanimous vote, Hygge Lodge #188 overwhelmingly elected Anne McNeely as our outstanding sister for 2019. Although we are a new lodge, our lodge is a blend of members who have been longtime sisters in the Supreme Lodge of the Danish Sisterhood. Anne was a charter member of Hygge #188 with her primary membership established in Lodge #75.

The year 2019 marked Anne’s 40th anniversary with the Danish Sisterhood. During those 40 years Anne has volunteered countless hours for the good of the Sisterhood. Just this past year Anne was instrumental in connecting our lodge with a fundraising opportunity that will become an annual project for us. We were able to donate funds locally and nationally that support both humanitarian and cultural organizations. This supports our mission : to enhance and increase our understanding and appreciation of Danish heritage, traditions and culture through a variety of activities and programs that benefit the community at large.

She has served as an officer with grace and compassion. Her level head has guided us through Danish Sisterhood News, June 2020

some very difficult, challenging times. Her skills at keeping us on track are admirable. The voice of reason. Anne teaches us to serve and honor our commitments. To be self reliant and to treat ALL with compassion, friend and foe alike. To give to our capacity and to recognize our limits. As a hostess for the meeting, one never knows what “funness” will be up her sleeve. Games and prizes sprinkled with Danish culture.

Anne’s years as a sisterhood member coincide with her community service. For many years she served on the Enumclaw School Board moving on to serve as a council member for the City of Enumclaw. She is a champion in our community. Selfless, simply making the world, our world a better place.

Her soup is legendary. Combine that with her rye bread and heaven awaits! And we cannot forget Aebleskiver breakfasts. Countless satisfied people, nourishing not only our appetites, but our souls as well. Anne is a very modest person and shies away from the spotlight. Hygge Lodge #188 feels that she will shine in that spotlight this year and forever in our hearts.

RECIPE CARD

Agurkesalat

(Cucumber Salad) 2 Large cucumbers 1 Tbsp. Salt 3/4 c. White vinegar 1 Tbsp. Sugar 1 tsp. Salt 1/4 tsp. White pepper 2 Tbsp. Chopped fresh dill Scrub the cucumbers and dry them. Score the cucumbers lengthwise and cut them into thin, almost translucent slices. Arrange in a shallow dish and sprinkle with salt. Put some weight on top of cucumbers to press out excess water and bitterness. Set at room temperature for a couple of hours.

(for Danish Hot Dogs) 1/2 cup good quality Mayonnaise 1/3 cup creme fraiche (or sour cream) 2 large gherkins, chopped (or 1/4 to 1/2 cup pickle relish) 1 Tbsp chopped capers (eliminate if using pickle relish) 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard Cider vinegar to taste A little sugar (optional)

Remove weight, drain cucumbers and spread them out on paper towels. Pat them dry. Mix together the vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper. Pour over cucumbers and strew them with copped dill. Chill 3 hours and just before serving, drain most of the liquid. Serves four as a salad.

Remoulade

Updates from Princess Marie Lodge #68 We had our last regular lodge meeting on March 8 led by president Amy Larsen. It was a Sunday afternoon komsammen, like any other one held at the home of Aase Hansen. We had our business meeting followed by lovely refreshments provided Tove Olafsen, who served delicious homemade Norwegian waffles with jam, and Vibeke Hansen, who made a heavenly chocolate buntcake, chokolade sandwiches and brought fresh strawberries and grapes.

After our refreshments, an informative and interesting program about Grundtvig was presented by Annette Buhl with excellent comments by Susi Costantini. We had started at 1:00 p.m. and still had a lot of the afternoon left, so the lively chatting and laughter amongst the Sisters went on for quite a while. No one was in a hurry to leave; it was like we had a sense that we should enjoy the hyggeligt moment we were having.

Later that week, our world fell apart as it did for everyone, and no one knows when we will be able to get together again in person for a komsammen like that. April came and went with our regular monthly komsammen sadly cancelled.

What were we to do? We have a great active lodge with currently 42 members total spread over the whole of the United States. Our president Amy decided to try something new and on May 3 we had our first virtual meeting via Zoom. With just a little bit of effort we got many of the Sisters online with audio and video, it went remarkably well! We happily had 26 eager Sisters join in with numerous pets making cameo appearances too. We had a short business meeting and then we went on to have people tell a little about their current situations and how they are

dealing with all the changes. The Sisters were encouraged to contact others if they felt in need of help in any way.

The wonderful thing about having a virtual komsammen is it allowed Sisters who live far away, and usually cannot participate in our meetings, join in. We had one sister attend, Karen Sleichter, whom we had never actually met before. Karen lives in San Diego, too far to attend a regular meeting in person, but she was able to join us this time through Zoom. Over the last few years, we have had a few members move out of state and now they too could join us. Lisbeth Hencke joined in from Rockville, Maryland. Two others, Ulla Scott and her daughter Karen Scott, joined from California, Maryland. A bit closer to home was Karla Hansen, joining us from her new home in Boise, Idaho, and finally we had Judi Samuel join in from Seattle. We had members of all ages participate in the virtual komsammen, from 8-year-old America to several over 80 years old, for a grand total 26. It was so wonderful to see the faces of all these Sisters, hear their voices, and share a little hygge while we were all staying safe at home!

Since the virtual komsammen was so successful, we plan to have our Danish Book Club meeting online too. We are reading The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell. Our next lodge meeting will be in June and our program will be Genforeningen presented by Susi. Definitely something to look forward to!

Join the Hiking Viking on the Colorado Trail (Well, virtually.)

This summer let’s raise funds together for our Museum of Danish America Archival Project! The National Foundation for Danish America (NFDA) has invited the Danish Sisterhood to participate in their “Hiking for Danish America” fundraiser.

Starting June 29th, Bruce Bro, NFDA President, will traverse the 500-mile Colorado Trail for six to eight weeks from Waterton Canyon, southwest of Denver, to Durango. The “Hiking Viking” will navigate to 13,271 feet above sea level (or higher) and keep above 10,000 feet for most of the trail.

Participating in the Hike for Danish America Fundraiser is easy! All you have to do is:

1. Promote the “Hike for Danish America” fundraiser to your membership.

2. Encourage individuals or your lodge to pledge per mile hiked or a flat amount.

3. Send pledged funds to DSS National Treasurer, Linda Brooks (at the conclusion of the hike).

NFDA will be tracking pledges for participating organizations like ours. You will receive notification of Bruce’s successful completion of the trail and a reminder of your pledge amount. NFDA plans to make this campaign fun and inclusive for donors and partnering organizations: • Bruce will engage during the hike on social media and the website by posting pictures and videos as he progresses • Each partnering organization (DSS!) will be featured during Bruce’s hike through social media • Organizational pledges will be included on their website and weekly email

Oh -- if you’re skeptical about Bruce’s ability, don’t be. He can do it – he’s hiked the Grand Canyon, rim-to-rim, reached Mt. Everest’s Base camp in the Himalayas, summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, and climbed the highest peaks in the U.S.! At a time when we’re staying at home and staying safe, the “Hiking for Danish America” event is an opportunity for our organization to support the wonderful work of the Museum of Danish America.

The Museum of Danish America DSS Archives Update I hope you are all staying healthy and safe in this uncertain time and enjoying $43,000 the beginning of summer. I am writing to give you an update on your collection.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the year, I have started by cataloging the Sisterhood ledgers. There is a total of 269 ledgers and by the time this issue reaches you, you will be able to view them online at https://danishmuseum. $32,250 pastperfectonline.com/. Please keep in mind that the records show a sample of the contents of each book, not the complete ledger. The online record for each ledger will show the lodge name and number, and dates for when the ledger was recorded. Many will also have a list of Sisters mentioned in each book. I am pleased to say this step represents the completion of a large portion of the $21,500 project.

What’s Next? If you remember, what arrived as 78 boxes of ledgers, documents, photos and convention materials, has been rehoused into 53 archivalgrade, acid free boxes. I will start sorting those materials to reduce duplication $10,750 and begin cataloging. This will be a time intensive process, so I am pleased to have completed the ledger collection and to have nearly a year and a half to focus on these boxes.

For those of you who may have missed a tour of the archives in October $0 2019, or for those of you with more questions, I would like to invite you to a Facebook Live Tour of the Archive on June 30 at 2 p.m. CST. I will show you where your documentary collection is stored, and pull a couple of items to share. I will happily answer any questions you might have––either live, or after. If you participated in the presentation I gave at the convention in October, you may remember that I talked about re-hydrating old rolled panorama photographs, like the DSS group photos in the collection. I recently documented the process of rehydrating my grandfather’s World War II muster photograph and welcome you to see the video on the Museum of Danish America YouTube channel, which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/user/DanishMuseum.

Both the cost of time spent cataloging the collection and the materials for keeping your history safe are funded by the HRDP Grant and your generous matching contributions. 4 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT SANKT HANS AFTEN

1 2 3 A Sankt Hans Aften bonfire at Hornbaek Strand.

Before Christianity had come to Denmark, the Danes celebrated the summer solstice. After Christianity came to Denmark, leaders of the Church encouraged this celebration by linking it to Sankt Hans Aften which occurs on June 23rd, right after the solstice.

In the late 19th centruy, Danes began to affix a figure akin to a wtich to their bonfires. It is said that burning a figure of a witch would send the witch back to the mountains in Germany. Some still keep with this tradition and others just enjoy a night with fire and friends.

Music is also a wonderful part of Sankt Hans Aften. Originally, people would sing traditional folk songs around the fire, but in the 19th century traditional songs were replaced with more patriotic songs. The traditional song to sing on Sankt Hans Aften is Vi Elsker Vort Land (We Love Our Country).

Accompanying the bonfire, you’ll want to make sure you have a cold beer and some akvavit ready to toast with and enjoy. For food, many make hot dogs and top them with a variety of toppings including ketchup or mustard, remoulade, pickled cucumbers, fried onions and more.

DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels� posted.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you would be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category are welcome to participate by donating $1000 to the Danish Sisterhood, which can be sent to the National Treasurer.
