Summer seems to finally have arrived for most of us. However, we definitely have had a year of strange weather with late spring flooding, etc.

Do remember that if you have suffered extreme loss as a result of a disaster, seek out help from the Sisterhood’s Disaster Relief Fund. You can contact any National Board Member for assistance.

Also, with summer, vacations and several lodges being dark we need to remember to prepare for National Convention.

Velkommen

Dear Sisters, For my day job, I work as a magazine editor on several hobby magazines. This month, in one of our titles, we featured some model toy soldiers of the Danish Royal Guard. Of course, I read that article right away.

I then shared with our other editor some of my own background with the Danish Guard– not only did I see them at Amalienborg Palace back when I visited Denmark in 2007, but my dad also has a beautiful wooden toy soldier of the Danish Guard in Ceremonial Uniform–red instead of blue tunics. I’ve always admired that soldier.

It also reminded me of my own figurine that i have sitting beside me as I type: a wooden toy Viking figurine that my cousin had bought for me when I was in Denmark in 2007. I thought it was extra special because it reminded me so much of the wooden figurine that my dad has.

When I look at it now, it reminds me of Denmark, it reminds me of family, it reminds me of the long history that we as Danes and Danish Americans are so proud of.

I’d love to hear from our readers about special pieces that you may have that remind you of part of Denmark’s history. Is there a certain era that you love? Or maybe it’s more of a family memory that an item holds. No matter what, please feel free to share your story with us–we’d love to hear it!

News from Flora Danica Lodge #177, Solvang, CA

Lodge #3 Updates

The May meeting of Flora Danica Lodge began with dinner and fellowship at member Tone Anderson’s beautiful home. This year we added a new twist: a “best recipe” contest. After taste-testing the four different frikadeller dishes and the three different potato salads submitted, members voted for their favorites.

Prizes were awarded to Glenda Madrid for favorite frikadeller and Marian Silva for favorite potato salad. The entire dinner from appetizers featured Danish dishes prepared by our members.

Yum!

After the business meeting concluded, we worked crafting May Day baskets to fill with candy and deliver to residents of the Atterdag Village retirement community while enjoying dessert.

What a wonderful evening!

Several members attended the District Convention in Santa Maria the last weekend in April.

Three Flora Danica members, Glenda Madrid, Donna Inneman-Andersen and Lori Beattie McConnell (all three pictured center) serve on the California District Board.

We are still trying to dry out after a very wet, rainy spring here in Iowa and Illinois and we appreciate the current sunshine and warmth.

Our June meeting will be at the home of Paulette Fisher for some Danish dishes on the menu and our July meeting will be in Clinton at the Clinton County Historical museum, which is undergoing renovation.

We are all looking forward to the National Convention in Omaha this October. In preparation for the Convention, Jerry Johansen is handcrafting Jens Jensen handmade artisan Cedar writing pens, made from wood from trees that Jens Jensen planted at the Hauberg estate in our area. Those of you who heard the Friday night talk on the Jens Jensen landscaping at our Heartland District convention last September, will be aware of the Jens Jensen treasure we have in our midst. A certificate of authenticity will accompany each pen, documenting the wood is from trees planted by Jensen all those years ago.

News from Lodge #4, Chicago, IL Lodge No. 4 members enjoy plenty of outdoor events during the warm spring and summer months. A few examples include:

On May 19th, members marched in the Norwegian Day Parade in Park Ridge and passed out information about the Sisterhood and local Scandinavian events to parade watchers. Together with The Danish Home of Chicago, Sisterhood members have taken part in this parade, which is in celebration of Norway’s Constitution Day, for several years.

On May 25th, members volunteered at the Paint, Rake, and Dig Day at Vasa Park. This park is a 25-acre property along the Fox River in South Elgin where the Scandinavian Day Festival is held every September. As a reward for helping get the Park ready for the season, a wonderful potluck lunch was served to the volunteers.

On June 22nd, members will spend the day volunteering at the Summer Festival at The Danish Home of Chicago. Members can be found selling cookies and pastry at the bakery booth, making Danish open-faced sandwiches, selling lucky chances, and more.

On July 21st, the Lodge will host an outdoor meeting at Vasa Park, so members can take part in Heritage Days at the Park. This heritage event was first held last year and brings different Scandinavian organizations together for a funfilled day with food, games, and more.

Update from Lodge #75 Enumclaw, WA Unity Lodge #75 in Enumclaw, Washington held their second annual plant sale, bazaar, bake sale and luncheon on May 18th. The rain went away, the sun came out and we had a wonderful day with outside vendors in the street beside the hall, plants all over the porch, 4 more vendors inside along with our bake sale, bazaar items and room for sitting down to enjoy a Danish lunch. Lunch was served from 11 to 1 and was all inclusive for the reasonable sum of $10 a plate. Frikadellar, roasted potatoes, pickled beets, red cabbage, cucumber salad, rye or oatmeal roll, citron fromage and beverage was all included.

It was lots of work but most of the sisters pitched in to help along with several family members so we had a lot of fun along with the work.

When vendors came back to say how much they enjoyed the lunch and older Danes came back to buy extra frikadillar “because they tasted just like Mom’s”, it made us all very proud. It’s always fun to introduce others to our wonderful Danish food.

Early reports look like we cleared almost $2,000 toward maintenance for our historic Danish Hall which needs some replacement of siding on the weather side this summer. It’s nice to have the hall for our community events and for other people to use for weddings, memorials, birthdays or classes. Currently Scottish dancing, yoga, belly dancing, cooking classes and tai chi are offered. The night after our event, 3 local musicians rented the hall to offer an acoustic concert for the community with only a $3 charge to help cover the rental costs so our hall is becoming very popular again for the community.

The 70th PNW Convention in Hood River, OR – Apr. 26-27, 2019 at Best Western Plus Hotel - Hosting Lodges DS #81 & DB #167 Friday – April 26th Hotel was lovely–located right down on Hood River. After check-in, registration took place and many members met from the Sisterhood & Brotherhood lodges.

The joint installation with the Brotherhood was at 2pm where we were bid welcome by the presidents from the Danish Sisterhood & Brotherhood. After the welcome, the three national anthems were sung. Then we split into 2 groups.

The Danish Sisterhood’s business meeting started at 3pm and our ‘opening song’ ‘Der er et Land’ was sung and the Past President opened the constitution for business.

Roll call of all Officers and delegates and alternates took place. Presiding President, Marian Case, bid welcome and the Mission Statement was read, as well as a paragraph of the PNW Districts bylaws, read by the Vice President.

The President then went through the entire business ritual on the agenda and gave recognition to past district officers and past presidents.

The Secretary read all the correspondence. The treasurer’s report was done and bills paid, donations were decided with eight chosen for a total of $770.00.

The chaplain then read a devotional.

The Lodge reports were read by all the 6 Lodge delegates. Helen’s boutique was opened. Appointment of Chairs for Committees were done for Nomination & Resolution.

The meeting ended at 5:30 with our usual coin march and door prizes. Then we went to the hospitality room and before dinner, heard a scientific speech & slide presentation by Scott Burns, ‘The Dynamic Geological History of Denmark’ – all about how Denmark, then called DANE-LAND, came to be. Then dinner was served, a great buffet and the table decorationss were lovely. tI was a festive evening and gathering.

Our business meeting started at 9AM with a flag salute. This time we sang ‘God bless America’ and ‘O’Canada’ followed by the business roll call of all officers and delegates. We also had a memorial ceremony done by the District Chaplain.

Christina Sallee from National gave a presentation and an update of what’s been happening in National since the last National Convention and invited us to the next National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska on Oct. 3-6, 2019.

A bus-tour is arranged to Iowa, where the Danish American Museum is located in Elk Horn–and where now all our historical data and artifacts are stored, preserved and on display. The Museum will also co-host the National Convention and a dinner at the Museum.

The new Enumclaw ‘Hygge Lodge #188 was mentioned with the most increase of members. Thomas Tricarico volunteered to create a new Membership plaque.

The Nomination Committee nominated the new slate of Officers for 2019-2020 and the President nominated next year’s Chaplain, Historian and Publicity Chair.

The President gave her report on her first year in office. The next PNW convention was announced–April 24th – 25th, 2020 in Tacoma, WA. The 2nd coin march was done and door prizes were drawn.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30pm with singing the closing song “Lullaby & Goodbye’ Back to the hospitality room for refreshments.

Before dinner, the Installation and ceremony took place of the newly elected Officers of the Sisterhood & Brotherhood. The Sisterhood was installed by Christina Sallee from National and the gavel was handed over to the continuing President Marian Case from Lodge #81.

Afterwards, two Vikings from ‘The Timberhavens Viking’ explained about their traditional clothing and weapons – this was followed by the banquet dinner and the tables were again set up with lovely decorations. During dessert we enjoyed ‘Music by Nielsen & Neubauer.

Saturday – April 27th At 7:30 we had the Past President’s breakfast.

After dinner was the draw for the raffle prizes and the many Silent auction baskets were done.

The nomination for the’ ‘Outstanding lodge sister award’ and eight donations were announced.

It was a very successful convention and great to see so many familiar faces again.

It was very busy but fun weekend. The Portland Lodges did a great job.

Save the Date Save the Date for the 73rd Annual Danebod Folk Meeting, August 21-25, 2019, at the Danebod Folk School in Tyler, MN. Registration materials will be mailed in early May and will also be available on-line at danebodfolkmeeting.org.

Tentative lecture topics are Danish Values in an American Culture, Updates on Eyewitness Palestine, Soil Health, Mental Health, Children’s Literature, History and Music of Leonard Bernstein, NAFTA & USMCA, Eastern European History, and When Religionless Faith Meets Faithless Religion in Joy. The Museum of Danish America “Hygge” traveling exhibit will be set in the Stone Hall during the meeting.

Saturday evening entertainment will be an ensemble representing The ASI Spelmanslag fiddling group, including Ross Sutter, a Swedish music historian and accomplished guitar player.

News from MOO Regional District On May 3-4th 2019 the district of Michigan Ontario and Ohio meet in Greenville Michigan. The Brotherhood met at the same time. Friday night we met at the Danish Cultural Centre (former Danish Hall) for social hour to catch up on the past year events. We also managed to get a new member for Greenville thanks to Kim Judge.

Saturday morning started with registration

then on to meeting where we heard of activities in our lodges for past year... Also scholarship and grants for district and National were reviewed...

National convention was mentioned and arrangement for travelling together was discussed.

Some time were spent on how to cut down on District meeting expenses as most of our delegates have to be on the road for 3 days and only gets part of expenses paid for. Our District board remains the same.

Next year district meeting will take place in/around Port Huron . It will start at noon on the Saturday with a light lunch then meetings and finish with dinner and social time in the evening.

This way most of us do not have to leave home until Saturday morning. Host will be Bluewater Mermaid Lodge # 184....

FAQs for Delegates

Registration, Lodging and Reimbursement

Q: Do I register for just a few events?

A: Delegates should register and submit payment for Thursday, Friday and Saturday events.

Q: Will my travel costs to convention be reimbursed?

A: Delegates will receive up to $350 reimbursement for travel costs. Please bring receipts to submit.

Q: Convention organizers have reserved hotel rooms in a block. Must we book within that block, or is outside of the block allowed?

A: By booking within the Danish Sisterhood block, you are helping to ensure we reach our room minimum required to maintain free meeting rooms.

This allows us to keep our costs down.

Q: How will I be reimbursed or compensated as a delegate?

A: As a delegate you will submit paperwork requesting a daily per diem for three days. Delegates vote on the amount of reimbursement at the beginning of convention.

Q: Do delegates need to write short bios for either the program or the newsletter?

A: No, delegates need only submit a photo for the program. Photos must be a vertical head & shoulders shot with a resolution of 300dpi. Submit your photo to Lauren Nielsen by July 31, 2019 by emailing editor@danishsisterhood.com

Schedule and Meetings Q: Is there a dress code?

A: Comfortable, business casual is appropriate for our meetings. As the temperatures in meeting rooms can sometimes vary, it is advisable to bring a sweater or shawl. Evening events call for a bit of celebration but are not formal (or even semi-formal).

Q: Do I have to attend all events on the schedule?

A: Convention provides an opportunity for del-

egates to contribute to the future of the organization during meetings, attend the Museum of Danish America to view our historical items, and participate in two workshops designed to round out convention with informative and fun classes.

You will be expected to share what you learn with your home lodge. Attendance is required at all events.

Q: Sunday morning will there be a breakfast or is it eat on your own before you leave?

A: There is not a scheduled meal on Sunday. Grab your favorite Sisters from a different lodge and meet for a breakfast or brunch at one of downtown Omaha’s great restaurants.

National Board Positions Q: I’m considering running for National Board.

When will we learn more about available positions and the application process?

A: Stay tuned for further information in upcoming newsletters. If you have immediate questions, please contact Sindy Mikkelsen (president@danishsisterhood.com).

Donations and Historical Items Q: Can individuals and/or lodges donate raffle items?

A: Yes, they are welcome! Please keep in mind that many individuals will be flying to and from convention. Large items may be difficult to transport. If you wish to donate a raffle item, please notify Sindy Mikkelsen (president@danishsisterhood.com).

Q: We have historical items from our lodge which we would like to donate to the Museum of Danish America. Can we bring them to Convention and leave them at the Museum?

A: Yes! Amy Larsen, our National Historian, will host a display table at Convention for items from lodges, and has made arrangements to submit donations to the Museum at the conclusion of convention. Please contact Amy for further instructions (historian@danishsisterhood.com).

Are you on the fence about going to the National Convention in Omaha?

We’d like to invite you all to join us in Omaha this October 3-6. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet up with old friends, meet new friends, and get to know fellow sisters and brothers from across the country. With our 41 lodges stretched across the country and in Canada, we find everyone has something special and unique to offer to the organization. Whatever the connection might be, meeting up every four years is definitely worthwhile.

VISIT THE MUSEUM OF DANISH AMERICA. If you haven’t had the opportunity to stop by the Museum in Elk Horn, you are in for a treat (as those of you who have had the chance to visit can attest).

It’s not very large compared to other museums but packs an enormous amount of history. Their archival and genealogy work is outstanding. As you all know, they are in the process of recording and preserving our historical documents and artifacts dating back to the late 1890’s. Definitely worth seeing along with their other exhibits.

LEARN FOR YOUR LODGE. A couple of very informative workshops have also been lined up for you – Kara from the Genealogy Center at the Museum will cover tips and tricks for researching your family’s history and Linsey, a fellow sister and social media guru will explain, and take the mystery out of, social media and give you insight in how these avenues can help reach your members and prospective new members.

RELAX AND ENJOY THE ENTERTAINMENT. Last, but certainly not least, on Friday and Saturday night we have been fortunate to have lined up some great entertainment for you. The Mads Tolling violinist and grammy-award winner, and Bathtub Dogs, a fun men’s acapella group from Omaha State University.

We look forward to seeing you in Omaha! Registration is still open until August 1, so please consider joining us for a fun and informative weekend.

We need you on the National Board!

Do you have lots of energy and great ideas? Do you feel excited about shaping the future of the Sisterhood? Then consider applying for a National office.

At each national convention we elect new officers, so we need you to show your support by sharing your expertise, enthusiasm and courage.

A position on the board may require some travel, hours in front of a computer, and a good dose of self-motivation. In return, you will gain a new perspective about our organization as you work in collaboration with other board members to shape our future.

Social Media As our organizational membership changes, our marketing and communication strategies must adapt to the new audiences. Social media platforms, like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, don’t have to be intimidating. Learn tricks about how to use Instagram, Facebook, and twitter to grow your audience and communicate with your members. Your facilitator, Linsey Knerl,is a member of Tivoli Lodge #300. Born and raised in rural Nebraska, Linsey is a homeschooler to five, work-at-home writer, freelance blogger, author, and public speaker. She has always had the desire to explain the world in a down-to-earth manner. Her work has been featured in publications such as All You Magazine, Woman’s Day, Better Homes and Gardens and USA Today. She is also the Social Media Chair of the ASJA (American Society of Journalists and Authors.)

COLUMBIA HALL Dannebrog’s Columbia Hall has been a renovation project since 1991. It was purchased by the Dannebrog’s Booster club. The main objective was to restore it as a community Hall. It serves today as a small museum. Tourists can come and look up there roots and look thru the many scrapbooks Shirley Johnson has complied. Shirley is a hero in many peoples eyes, as if it wasn’t for her Columbia Hall would not be here today.

A little history, it was first constructed in 1908, by the Danish Brotherhood, and thats when the Danish Sisterhood got started later in 1909, and later disbanded in the late 40’s. The last member did not give up, she had her daughter-in-law Harriet Nielsen drive her to Grand Island to the Western * lodge # 113. Her name was Anna Nielsen.

Columbia served as a Hardware store, and Winchester and Hald furniture store, a funeral palor, also the Odd Fellows and Rebecca’s used the Hall for meetings. Dances and Parties were held every Sat. night on the second floor.

The first floor is completed with two bathrooms, kitchen, and main meeting area. The funding for the project has come from all the grants, donations, memorials, money from Dannebrog’s alumni. Many Volunteers have worked together and with the help of this generation a piece of Danish history will again be Dannebrog’s hub.

HISTORIC FLOOD IN NEBRAKSA 2019 On March 13th 2019 flood water began running through the main street on mill in our beautiful Dannebrog. By the 14th there was 5 foot of rushing water. All the businesses in Dannebrog , their basement were full, and 6 houses had their basement walls buckle under the pressure. Many had sewer water. All are trying to rebuild and remodel.. Nebraska Strong!!!!. It was so heart warming as the volunteers poured in to help, and the many donations that were given. Our Columbia’s first floor was flooded, and the basement. It is a time to get going and don’t give up. We ask your prayers for this little Danish village.

A Note about District Conventions It is not uncommon for the DSS National Board to forego attending district conventions during a National Convention year. This cost-saving measure allows us to redirect funds for convention, knowing we will see you later this year.Â

District Secretaries can expect to receive copies of handouts to be presented to Lodge Delegates and District Board Members. All National Board members will be attending their respective District Conventions. Please direct your questions to those members. Of course, you are always invited to reach out to anyone of us on the board. See our contact information at the front of the DSS News.
