Summertime has definitely arrived and I see many of our members traveling, attending graduations, and enjoying the sunshine. My own family has had graduations, some heath scares with dad, and a few trips planned. Always busy!

Some great news! Our Sisterhood trip to Denmark is sold out! We have a waiting list of folks as well. This is expected to be an outstanding adventure for all of us going and I’m looking forward to seeing so many of you there!

A good number of our lodges are “dark” during the summer, and hopefully that means members return with new found energy and ideas.

If you are in need of ideas, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Trustee, Karin Wasler, as she has revised the toolbox and it’s full of great activity programs.

I want to thank those of you who sent messages, sharing your own lodge experiences and how much you appreciated this year’s District Convention presentations. Understanding the diversity within our lodges, and how best to manage that is vital and once again, please do reach out when you need help.

Recently, I went to the Danish American Center in Minneapolis for their annual Danish Day celebration. I brought two friends along with me, neither of whom were Danish but both knew how Happy June Birthday to: important my Danish heritage is to me. It was a Names Lodge Age wonderful celebration and I look forward to many Ivy Morrison 126 12 more.

As I walked around, showing my friends the Iris Morrison Joslynne Christiansson 165 9 center and explaining different aspects of Danish heritage, culture, and geography to them, I felt so Lara Nicholls-Rockliffe 117 13 energized and found myself almost transported Hazel Allan 81 8 back to Denmark. It was an incredible feeling and my friends truly appreciated the love I shared for my Danish heritage. One even asked if she could Title: The Danish Mailbox be an honorary Dane!

In 1960 I made my first trip to Denmark, traveling there with my father who was born in Denmark and my mother who was born to Danish immigrants.

We saw a lot of Denmark on that trip, but one of my main memories was celebrating the Fourth of July at Rebild Bakker.

My parents and my aunt and uncle and I went together.

It was a warm summer day with a beautiful blue sky over the heather clad hills. I had never heard of this event. We walked the path lined with the flags of all 50 states. We visited a log cabin (Blokhouse) known as the Lincoln Log Cabin, and we listened as Dinah Shore, my mother’s very favorite singer, performed on the stage. At that time I did not know the story of why we were in Denmark surrounded by thousands of people all celebrating the American holiday, Independence Day.

Some of our members have been to Rebid and most of you know about this celebration. I thought you might like to know the history about how this park in Denmark which became the center of an American holiday celebration came to be.

The beautiful heather clad hills in the Himmerland area on the Jutland peninsula originally were owned by Danish farmers who used the land as pasture for their cattle. Then in 1911-1912 almost 200 acres were bought with funds raised by Danish Americans and Rebild Bakker was born.

The land was then donated to the Danish state with three conditions: The area was to remain in a natural state. The land was to remain open to everybody. Danish Americans were to be allowed to celebrate American holidays in the hills.

The name most often associated with the

purchase of this land is Max Henius. In the early part of the twentieth century, Dr. Henius became interested in Danish-American organizations in Chicago. Funds were being raised by Danish Americans to purchase the 200 acres (0.81 km2) of the heather-covered hills, located in part in Rold Skov (Danish Forest), Denmarks largest forest.

In 1912 Max Henius presented the deed to H.M. King Christian X as a permanent memorial from Danish Americans. Rebuild Bakker is today a Danish National Park situated near the town of Skørping in Rebild municipality, Region Nordjylland in northern Jutland, Denmark.

Max Henius was born in Aalborg, Denmark to a Jewish immigrant family. His father, Isidor Henius (1820–1901) was born in Thorn, West Prussia, now Torun, Poland, emigrated to Denmark in 1837 and continued his work for spirits distillers to improve and standardize production. Later on January 15, 1846 he co-founded a distillery in Aalborg that was later, in 1881, together with several other distilleries, consolidated into De Danske Spritfabrikker. (You may actually know well one of the products produced by this distillery. Since 1881, Aalborg Akvavit and Danish schnapps were produced in the city at this distillery.

The production moved from Aalborg to Norway in 2015.)

The family of the mother of Max Henius, Emilie (née Wasserzug) Henius, owned a small castle in Aalborg, now called Sohngaardsholm Slot. Since 2005, it has been the site of a gourmet restaurant.

He attended the University of Marburg in Germany, earning his Ph.D. degree in chemistry. Max emigrated from Aalborg to the United States in 1881 at the age of 22, settling in Chicago.

Initially he worked for the Northern Pacific Railway testing the waters between Fargo, North Dakota, and Bozeman, Montana. In 1886, he opened a drug store. Later he formed Wahl & Henius, an institute for chemical and mechanical analysis, with his former schoolmate, Robert Wahl (1858-1937). Founded in 1891, this institute became the Chicago-based American Brewing Academy (later known as the Wahl-Henius Institute of Fermentology). It was one of the premier brewing schools of the pre-prohibition era. This institute was later expanded with a brew master school that operated until 1921.

He married Danish-born Johanne Louise Heiberg (1860–1934) on June 4, 1883. She was the sister of historian Johan Ludvig Heiberg and related to Danish author Peter Andreas Heiberg. They had three children, Henry, Emil, and Gerda. Their great-grandchildren include actors Keith Carradine, Robert Carradine, Christopher Carradine, and Michael Bowen.

In 1912 Max Henius presented the deed to the land which had been purchased with donations from Danish-Americans to his Majesty King Christian X as a permanent memorial to Danish Americans.

The Danish government added to the land, that now features a beautiful natural park, Rebuild Bakker.

Henius died in 1935. On the slope north of Rebild, where the residence of Max Henius was once located, a bust was placed in his memory.

Rebild National Park is not included in the Danish National Park laws of 2007, but the heath is still to be protected and it can use the name National Park nonetheless. The park is one of two original national parks in Denmark, the other one being ‘National Park Dybbøl Skanser’ opened in 1924, now called ‘Historiecenter Dybbøl Banke’ (English: Dybbøl Banke Museum and History Centre).

Rebild Bakker houses a number of museums.

The one I remember visiting is the Lincoln Log Cabin.

Blokhouse in Rebild National Park - also called the Lincoln Log Cabin - named after US President Abraham Lincoln (1861 - 1865), is now beautifully situated at the entrance to the national park, with a breathtaking view of the hills and 4th of July festival.

The Blokhouse is a Danish emigrant museum that tells the story of the many Danes who emigrated to the US in the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.

The Lincoln Log Cabin also contains items from the pioneers who settled the United States, and tells the story of Indians and the Wild West. This includes the proud story of how the American continent was eventually colonized, and the sad side of that story as the original inhabitants, the Indians, were

driven from their homes to make room for pioneer settlements.

The first log cabin was built in 1934. In 1987 it was moved. It was dismantled, beam by beam, numbered and moved from the original location to the more prominent location at the entrance to the national park.

In 1993 the Blokhouse burned down, but a new one was built the following year. The replacement was built in the State of Washington of old cedar trees harvested from the same area as original trees used for the first cabin. The cabin was then disassembled and shipped to Denmark to be reassembled in Rebild Bakker. Sixty years after the first log cabin had been opened at Rebild, the new cabin was ready for the 1994 festival.

American sculptor Georg J. Lober created an emblem for the Danish National Park in Rebild in 1912 and also made a bronze relief of Abraham Lincoln located in the park.

The first Rebild Festival took place in 1912, when King Christian X spoke to a crowd of 10,000.

The day has been celebrated every single year since then, with the exception of the periods during World War I and World War II.

Rebild National Park is the site of what is commonly believed to be the largest annual 4th of July celebration held outside the United States. Since 1912, The Rebild National Park Society Inc., a Danish-American friendship organization, has held a July 4 weekend festival that serves as a homecoming for Danish-Americans. This has helped make Rebild Park one of Denmark’s major tourist attractions.The festival was selected as one of The World’s Best Global Festivals in 2017 by Flight Network in Canada.

The Rebild Festival traditionally features the hoisting of the U.S. and Danish flags while the two countries’ national anthems echo in the surrounding hills. The annual Fourth of July celebration was the subject of the television documentary Rebildfest 1990, which featured actor Richard Chamberlain and Crown Prince Frederik.

Rebild National Park also houses an annual Christmas market on Advent Sunday with around 5,000 visitors.

If you ever plan to be in Denmark in July, I would suggest a visit to Rebild Bakker. It represents the Danish American’s love of their homeland and their love of the new country where they found new homes and new lives. What could be a better way to celebrate the 4th of July?

News from Flora Danica Lodge #177, Solvang, CA Sisters kicked off the month by delivering May Day baskets (crafted by members after the April meeting) to residents of the Atterdag Village retirement community.

The May meeting of Flora Danica Lodge began with dinner and fellowship in member Tone Anderson’s beautiful backyard. The menu featured tri-tip sandwiches expertly grilled by member Harriett Madsen’s husband, Gene, and Tone’s husband, Mike.

The meeting portion of the evening started with President Janet Townsend presiding over the initiation of a new sister, as Denise Johnson was welcomed into our lodge.

Vice President Karen (Pedersen) Voorhis brought in a large map of Denmark to launch our new cultural initiative that encourages Sisters to share their family origins. First step of the project: marking the map to indicate the location our relatives come from. In future meetings we will hear the stories of our families — from Denmark to America.

Flora Danica Lodge is “dark” in June and July, though we plan to host a crafting workshop or two as we prepare for our Danish Days booth, the major fundraiser of the year. (For those who’d like to come visit our beautiful city, Danish Days 2018 is set for September 14–16.)

Many organizations have emblems that can be used to commemorate their member’s affiliation with the organization by attaching the emblem to their grave marker.

Denmark? Germany? Denmark? Germany? The Heartland District of the Danish

And so goes the story of the Slesvig Holstein area which lies between Southern Jutland and Northern Germany. Dronning Margrethe Lodge #15 had scheduled two meeting programs this year on this contested area. In March three members of our lodge presented a program giving us the historical background. Lou Nielsen talked about the area from the earliest residents up to the War of 1864. Mary Thomas, who had read the new book translated to English

by Tom Buk-Swienty titled 1864: The Forgotten War that Shaped Modern Europe. Mary talked about the war and the importance of this battle which led the way to World War I. The War of 1864 was recently the subject of a Danish miniseries entitled 1864. Susan Jensen took us from the end of the war to present day, noting in her yearly talk to the Danish People the Queen of Denmark made a special mention to those Danes living in what is now Germany, but holding dear their love of Denmark.

All this was in preparation for our April meeting. Igna Wiehl, the author of the book Heartstrings, was scheduled to join us via telephone to discuss this book set in the Slesvig Holstein area just after the War of 1864. through World War I. The book was a choice of our lodge book group. Unfortunately, it seems when things start to go wrong, they continue on that path. About a week before the meeting Inga called to cancel. Three of our Lodge members stepped up to give a presentation related to the book. Lou Nielsen agreed to talk specifically about the area during World War I and just after, Andrea Leih agreed to lead a discussion of the book and Annette Lind said she would talk about Inga’s other books. Then came the April snow storm and while Milwaukee did not get the 30 inches that fell on Green Bay, there was enough ice and snow that the meeting was cancelled.

It seemed like a good idea to write an article on the three presentations we never got to hear. We usually review our programs in our newsletter for those members who are unable to attend the meeting. Since in April that was everyone in our lodge, here is a summary of what we all missed at the cancelled meeting.

Lou Nielsen The War of 1864 cost Denmark the loss of all of Slesvig, moving the border about 100 miles north to Kolding. Denmark was no longer a major power. The

war set the stage for WWI. Prior to the War of 1864 the Danish southern border included Slesvig and was marked by the Eider River.

The area of Slesvig was divided between Northern and Southern Slesvig. Northern Slesvig extended from the present border north. Approximately 160,000 people lived in the area, over 70% Danes.

The residents were involved in agriculture, with most owning medium sized farms.

In 1866, following the German/Austrian War, the Danes were promised they would have a vote to “Vote themselves home” This never happened.

By 1880 only German was taught in schools as German became the official language of the area.

Danish could only be spoken at home. While there was some discrimination against Danes, they were allowed to speak freely until WW1 began.

Then they are given 3 choices: 1. Swear allegiance to Germany. Become German citizens. Serve in the German Army, and learn to speak German.

2. Give up their land and farms and move north to Denmark.

3. Immigrate to America

In 1914 World War I began. The Central Powers were Germany, Austria, Hungry, and Turkey.

The Allies were Russia, France, Britain and later the United States. Others involved were Serbia, Romania and other Eastern European nations.

It was a horrible war that dragged on and on.

Soldiers and civilians lived under bad conditions, no one had the advantage. The war was fought in the trenches. The major line dividing the Central Powers and the Allies only moved 5 miles throughout the war.

26,000 Danes from Slesvig were conscripted into the German army. 4,000 were killed; 6,000 were wounded. Allies established separate POW camps for Danes. Danes young and old were taken. The young for the front, the old for support work behind the lines.

Denmark remained neutral. The Danish border was closed. The treatment of the Danes in Slesvig was a lot like the treatment of the Japanese here in WWII. Women and occasionally POW’s had to main7

tain the farms and support German army.

The post war treaty moved the border between Denmark and Germany south to its present position. World War I was the end of the monarchies in Germany, Russia, Austria, Hungry, Turkey and a few smaller Eastern countries.

Southern Slesvig from the Danish border to the Eider is still roughly 20% Danish. The residents still maintain the Danish culture and language. The Danes living in Germany were most recently mentioned by the Queen in her Christmas address. I guess time does not heal all wounds.

Andrea Leih Letter: a written, typed or printed communication, especially one sent in an envelope by mail or messenger.

Love letters, cover letters, inquiry letters, thank you letters, sympathy letters, and acknowledgement letters, life letters.

I am fortunate to have copies of the friendship/love letters that my Irish American grandfather sent to his best friend’s little sister, my German American grandmother during his experiences as World War I doughboy. I also recently acquired a book of letters written between my Danish immigrant grandparents and their relatives during 1924-1938. All of these letters share war deprivation, requests for money and joyful thank yous in return, best wishes for upcoming birthdays and anniversaries, daily life, difficulties and longings to see each other.

Having read these letters, I approached the reading of Heartstrings: A Tale of Danish Loyalty, Resistance, and Homecoming by Inga Wiehl with anticipation and interest, as she tells the story of her beloved grandmother during the Prussian rule of Southern Jutland (1864-1920) using imagined letters. The letters addressed to Carola (grandmother Abeline’s childhood friend) take us on a journey of what Abeline’s life most likely entailed, living during conflicting times: times of wanting to learn the Danish language, Danish songs, celebrate Danish holidays and feast days, yet having to instead learn German and obey German dictates. This, and then there were the conflicts of WWI, a time of the mandated drafting of Danish citizens into the Prussian army, to fight for Germany and against allied friends, in France, Britain, and the US.

Through her letters we learn about the loyalty of the people of North Slesvig. In a letter dated June 27, 1904, we read: “Fewer among us have been “made optants” and ordered out of the country. We Danish Sisterhood News, June 2018

are hoping for a new agreement between the Prussian and Danish governments. Under it, children born of parents who “opted for” Danish citizenship between 1864 and 1870 and later retracted their decision would be permitted to remain Prussian citizens.

Their parents had come to realize that as Danish citizens they would lose their civil rights and be doomed to a life they would not want for their offspring” (p.18).

They wanted to hold onto family farms and businesses hoping some day they would be Danish again. Prussian citizenship became a necessity. To leave meant Germans would snap up the land. The same letter speaks of little acts of resistance to defy the Germans, and embolden the Danes. “ Most importantly, of course, we stay on our farms, but we agitate in little ways as well. We keep planting red poppies and white daisies in our gardens, wearing red carnations on our white dresses to match the red bows in our white summer hats. …We keep singing, too…. I find them some kind of resistance and steadfastness to the Danish colors” (p.32) Wiehl addresses the plight of emigrants to Denmark and the US from North Sleswig. Most emigrants initially left for Denmark to flee the mandatory draft. “…of the eleven thousand who were to appear before the draft board in Haderslev …only six thousand showed up. Four thousand allegedly had fled to Denmark “(p.49). The difficulties of no land and poor prospect for employment led many to take the next step to immigrate to America.

If like me, you have relatives who emigrated from Denmark during this time frame, you too may find interesting the letters that talk about life in America. There is the presence of conflict on both sides of the ocean. “We sense a double message, too. …

They all have in them (letters) the same kind of praise for America-they talk over and over of “possibilities” and cheap land and freedom and what do I know, which makes me feel that the writers are justifying their going there in the first place instead of staying home and joining us in the fight for our own land. Yet leaving was a difficult decision for all of them: I know that, so I do understand that they must convince themselves and the rest of us that their exile is worthwhile (pp.66-67).

For the Danes in southern Jutland, the advent of WWI added to the misery they were experiencing.

A large portion of the book includes Abeline’s letters to Carola detailing the deprivation, the hard work of running the farm when her husband Peter is drafted, and the minutia of daily life at home and on the war front. A letter dated October 19, 2014 notes “Peter

and his comrades (fellow North Schleswig draftees) may not have liked sewing on name tags and buttons, but I bet those men were glad to just sit for awhile.

They put in a long day starting with reveille at six o’clock, drills, gymnastics, endless marches with full packs, and over and over again, target practice” (p104). And then add the Spanish Flu epidemic at this time to an already burdened people.

The final period of the book looks at the messy reunification of the south with Denmark. Votes in the Sleswig-Holstein area resulted in a split with t Northern Sleswig area voting to rejoin Denmark. February 10, 1920, Carola pens” What a day! And Peter not here to experience it. That is the saddest thing of all, for he fought for this day so dearly…Mightier than wind and weather, we filled the streets ad roads as we streamed towards the polls. We got up early to raise our flags-for the first time in fifty-six years.” (p.145).

Home at last. A final letter of love for the Danes.

Heartstings was Inga Wiehl’s second book.

Her first book was written in 2005 with a co-author, Ellie Heffernan. It is entitled When Professional Women Retire: Food for Thought and Palate and celebrates women’s ways of knowing how to retire into “the good life.” Their approach is predicated on the belief that we may transform the outward loss of professional careers and identity to inward gain. It acknowledges as well the need to stay healthy and includes recipes.

Also included in the book is The Tool Book which offers practical, hands-on information inquiries into part-time jobs, volunteer opportunities, continuing education, physical exercise options, and travel destinations. It furthermore shows how the book may be used as a starter text for group explorations, such as seminars, workshops, chautauquas, and focus groups, inviting women to come together to discuss issues, means of mutual support, and community outreach.

Her third book was written in 2013 and published in 2014. It is entitled Reclaiming Our Brains without Losing Our Minds, Some Hows and Whys of a Reading Group, It relates the story of a group of women in the mid-sized town of Yakima, Washington, who form a reading group dedicated to the pursuit of “the best that has been thought and said” in literature. Over the course of twenty-nine years, the wom-

en hone their minds, exchange ideas, and discover a sense of closeness and community that extends beyond the page.

Part I addresses the group’s history, meeting strategies, and reasons for belonging. The first selection topic was Isak Dinesen’s Stories. The them was learning to embrace our fate. They read Out of Africa, Seven Gothic Tales, Winter’s Tales and Judith Thurmond’s Life of a Story Teller. All these books are in our Lodge Library.

Part II consists of a number of essays written as responses to books the group has read Inga’s most recent book was published in 2017. It is entitled Tower Blues: Solving the Riddle of Confinement. She refers to the book as creative non-fiction. It is the result of her lifetime of fascination with Leonora the daughter of a Danish King. Her interest in Leonora began when Inga was six years old.

On August 16, 1661, Leonora Christine Ulfeldt, daughter of King Christian IV and half-sister of the reigning king, Frederik III, was arrested and brought to the Tower on unspecified charges. Unwilling to offer potentially incriminating information about herself and her husband, Corfitz Ulfeldt, Leonora eventually forced the team of high ranking men sent for questioning to reveal the grounds on which she was held captive. She is suspected of complicity in her husband’s acts of high treason against the Danish crown. Her refusal to acknowledge knowing anything about the betrayals sentences her to twenty-two years of imprisonment in a damp, filthy, rat-infested cell that’s lit only by a small mesh covered window just below the ceiling. Given nothing with which to occupy her mind or hands, she must rely on herself for continued survival. As she agonizes about the whereabouts of her husband and seven children, she suffers through the dark night of the soul to wrestle from nothing a life that can sustain her. Her welltrained mind and skillful hands find work, and her reborn faith in God straightens her shoulders for the cross she imagines herself to be carrying. Tower Blues is the story of a woman who, from the beginning and all the days to follow – in castles and in prison – remained interested in the world around her, no matter how sordid or trivial. She never allowed the poison of indifference to penetrate her system. She knew that even hatred is less destructive than indifference.

The Heartland District of the Danish Sisterhood and Brotherhood in America welcomes everyone to celebrate Danish American heritage at the Heartland District Convention on September 14-16, 2018 in Davenport, Iowa, at the Best Western plus Steeplegate Inn at 100 West 76th Street-Davenport, Iowa.

There will be time for fun and exploring the area, as well as renewing friendships and making new friends. The Rock Island Arsenal sits on a 946 acre island in the middle of the Mississippi River between Davenport, IA and Rock Island, IL and has much civil war history.. The Arsenal is still an active military facility and has a very interesting Visitors Center at Lock & Dam No. 15. John Deere Pavilion in Moline, IL explores agricultural history. John Hauberg Indian Museum in Blackhawk park offers much Native American history in Rock Island and the Denkmann-Hauberg Gardens and Jens Jensen landscape is a delight to see. Butterworth Center and Deere-Wiman house are former homes of John Deere descendents in Moline, IL.

The Palmer Mansion and Chiropractic Museum in Davenport, Iowa is of interest, as is the Figge Art Museum and the German American Heritage Center and Putnam museum.
