I do hope this finds all our members enjoying the beautiful weather and beginning of summer.

This is the time of year that so many Danes love to travel to warmer climates, and for those of us located in the US it’s just a great time of year to travel, period.

If you do happen to travel, and take the Sisterhood News with you, we’d love to get a picture of that so we can publish where our Newsletter has traveled. Send the photo and a brief (or not so brief) story about your trip to our editor, Lauren Nielsen, for publication. There is no contest, for those that have asked, but it’s just fun to see how far that newsletter can travel and the adventures our members have enjoyed.

Many of our lodges during these summer months will be “dark” and taking a break, and many of our members be gone and traveling as well.

We hope that you enjoy your time, stay safe, and if you think about it, share the Sisterhood with someone and build your lodge.

This month, I’ve been out exploring my new neighborhood on my bike quite a bit. I love finding new trails and parks and roads in the area. I also love reading articles that I’ve found about bicycling in Denmark. After receiving the cover photo from our National Secretary Glenda Madrid, I knew that I would have to feature it–and bicycles–in an upcoming issue!

In this issue, you’ll find a segment about things you might not have known about bicycling in Copenhagen. Back in 2007, my dad and I were visiting Denmark and our cousin was showing us around Copenhagen for a day. We were getting out of his car and he told us, “Whatever you do, don’t step out into the bicycle lanes!” Of course, we weren’t paying attention and did just that.

Luckily, we stepped out just in time as a bicyclist flew past us. It’s a fond memory...and a good lesson!

I’ve always found Denmark’s bicycling culture fascinating. It’s a part of Denmark we don’t always think about, but one that’s just as important as those that we do, like food and music and sight-seeing. If you’ve had a unique Danish experience that we haven’t brought up yet, send it my way. I love learning about every facet of Danish history and culture, and I’d love to be able to share these things with all of you.

And don’t forget, we’re always looking for lodge updates, cover photos, Danish historical or cultural pieces, and more. I hope you all have a wonderful start to your summer.

Update from Dagmar Lodge # 4, Chicago, Illinois Although the 2017 started out as an exciting year for Dagmar Lodge #4, as we welcome our new board members for 2017 as well as our new members, celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Danish Home in Chicago, and hold many other exciting events, there were also some sad moments as we had to say goodbye to two of our beloved members, Betty Svendsen, and Lydia Hansen.

Betty Svendsen – A Life Remembered Betty L. Svendsen was born on August 1, 1932 in Chicago. Her father came to United States from Denmark in 1911 at age of 6 years, while mother came in 1924 when she was 23 years.

Betty met her husband Thorkild Svendsen, who was born in Denmark, at a dance for young people at Dania Hall in Chicago in 1948. They married in 1954 and enjoyed their honeymoon in Denmark. She visited Denmark several times after that, going there in 2007 for the last time.

However, she also liked to travel the US. Thorkild and Betty had 2 children, Scott and Susan.

Betty worked for Kemper Insurance and Wang Laboratories where she developed her computer skills. She later started her own computer company and taught accounting software at Oakton Community College in Chicago. Her computer skills served her well as treasurer for Dagmar Lodge #4 and Midwest District for several years. She kept her technology skills sharpened, and was a vibrant photographer using her i-Pad.

Her heart was with the Danish Sisterhood, and she was member of Dagmar Lodge #4 for 14 years. She was also active in various other Danish organizations. She also enjoyed quilting, needlepoint and embroidery. Betty spent her last years at the Danish Home in Chicago where she passed away on February 21, 2017. greatly missed in the Danish community in Chicago.

Lydia Hansen – In Memoriam

Lydia Hansen was born October 2, 1932 in Winchester, Illinois. In 1958, Lydia married Bent Hansen, who was born and raised in Denmark on the island of Fyn. Lydia graduated from RHM School of Nursing in 1954 and was employed as a registered nurse for 38 years in Rockford, Illinois. She traveled to Denmark many times to visit family.

Lydia joined the Sisterhood in 1961. She was active in the Rockford Lodge until it closed, then was transferred to Dagmar Lodge #4 in Chicago. She was a very active member for over 55 years and was the longest living member of Dagmar Lodge #4 until her death. She was also the Midwest District President from 1987-1989.

She always made an effort to join the National Conventions across the nation every four years with her daughter Kristie Hansen-Mendez (also a long-term member of the Sisterhood). In fact, Lydia and Kristie were at the last Midwest District Convention in 2016 in Galena.

For the past year, Lydia has lived at the Danish Home in Chicago where she passed away on April 20, 2017. She will be greatly missed for her kind nature and wonderful personality.

Thyra Lodge #19 Celebrates 125th Birthday with Good Food and Humor!

On May 3rd we opened our meeting room in the Scandinavian Cultural Center at Pacific Lutheran University to the public for the celebration of our 125th birthday with a formal tea— Danish Style. Among our guests were members of VASA Order of America (Swedish), Daughters of Norway, The Danish Brotherhood, and members of the Scandinavian Cultural Center staff and council, including, interim director Dr. Don Ryan.

Jytta Wagoner, Lois Haley, Candace, Brown, Dorrit Gruendell, Judy Maass, and Carol Olsen prepared 6 varieties of open-faced sandwiches: traditional egg and tomato; ham with traditional pea and carrot relish; shrimp; roast beet with horse radish; Havarti and blue cheese with lingonberry garnish, salmon and cream cheese; and liver pate with pickled beets.

Guests enjoyed marzipan tarts by Judy Maass and a gorgeous marzipan-frosted layer-cake from Larsen’s Danish Bakery of Ballard, WA.

Lois Halley provided a lovely printed program and menu. May hostesses, Katie Eby, and Edith Parrao helped with set up and everyone pitched in to make the event a success.

The event opened with a skit, planned and executed by Vivian Ogren. Members posed as Danish Sisters of yore trying to catch the bus for a Danish Sisterhood party. Vivian Ogren portrayed, Anna Pickett, born in Aarhus, Denmark in 1927. Anna was known for her hospitality. Sisters and Mister Sisters emerged from the audience to catch the bus, representing former sisters upon whose shoulders our organization now rides (not rests).

Gloria Finkbeiner portrayed Myrna Mae Grove Rieck (1921-- 2010) past local and PNW District president as a go-getter, a caterer and owner of Mryna’s Kitchen. (Myrna started our first holiday bazaar, which continues to raise scholarship funds.)

was an artist who contributed her artistic talent to the organization. An endowment from her estate has provided generous student scholarships. Today her daughters Susan Reynolds-Sherman and Christina Price continue her legacy as members of the Sisterhood.

Mr. Sister, Bob Dick, donned a vintage hat and portrayed former member, Beverly Lund (1929-2015). Beverly prided herself in her tractor skills and for teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. Her personality was large and is sorely missed.

We lost two sisters in April of this year.

Inge McQueen and Mary Andersen. Inge was born in Aalborg, Denmark in 1936 and was remembered for her love of the Danish language 5

and for her skill in the kitchen. Twelve members attended her memorial service. Inge’s daughter Ellen attended the tea.

Mary Andersen--born in Canada, married her Danish husband in 1943. A life-long member of our lodge, Mary passed away on April 19, 2017 at the age of 96.

President Carol Olsen provided some comic relief as the overly aggressive bus driver, who took it upon herself to keep the Norwegians, Swedes, and an occasional German off the bus. She targeted one persistent Norwegian, who she suspected of carrying lutefisk in her backpack. Later in her welcome address Carol assured the guests that all are welcome to join the Sisterhood today, but to expect some ribbing as she told some classic Scandinavian jokes.

On a more somber note, we honored sisters who left us in the recent past with individual roses and a beautiful reading by Melanie Berg.

Candace Brown and Bob Dick, after fruitless attempts to uncover the early history of our organization, were disappointed by the lack of available material. But Candace put together a meaningful talk on the challenges that the Danish immigrants faced and the legacy they left behind for us to enjoy. If anyone has information on the early history of Thyra Lodge #19, we would love to hear it so that we might preserve it for future generations.

We had 8 Sisters along with some of the husbands gather for lunch and our May meeting. It was another rainy day, but we believe warmer weather is coming soon. Two of our Sisters were absent as they had college graduations to attend this day. Marilyn Dore’s daughter and Jane Hansen’s grandson were among young people receiving their diplomas.

We are still talking about the EGC Convention in April. We are enclosing a picture of the “Bird Basket” we brought to convention.

Our Sisters all made a contribution to the basket.

phia did a wonderful job in planning and preparation and it showed in the end. Many thanks from all of us who attended.

During our meeting, we discussed what we might be able to do to spark some danish interest and hopefully find a few more interested Sisters to join us. We are to come prepared at our next meeting to share ideas. We would also like to venture away from the restaurant, so those ideas would be welcome especially for summer programs. Next month we are going to remember St. Hans Eve and what it means in Denmark today. We hope it will be fun and interesting.

At this time, our next meeting is scheduled for the 2nd Saturday of June at Testo’s Restaurant in Troy. Happy Summer to all!

Keeping our Heritage Alive “When our hearts turn to our ancestors, something changes inside us. We feel part of something greater than ourselves.”

I think this quote by Russell M.Nelson reaches to the heart of our Danish Sisterhood. It also reaches to the heart of a project begun by one our Sisters, Debbie Henke. Debbie joined Lodge #15 a bit over a year ago. Her Danish ancestry has always been a part of her life.

As the family Christmas hostess, holidays included many Danish traditions. However Debbie noticed that the children who came to celebrate Christmas ate the food and enjoyed the decorations, but they did not connect it with Denmark.

And so Debbie began a project to involve the family’s children in their Danish heritage.

Our lodge first learned of this project when Debbie brought her binder “Celebrating Danish Roots and American Dreams” to a “Show and Tell” meeting we held in October 2016. The binder contained information on Danish traditions, the country of Denmark and Debbie’s relatives, past and present.

Using the information she has gathered for the binder, Debbie prepares a packet for the children who come to her home to celebrate the holidays.

The packet given to each child in 2016 contained the following information on a Danish Christmas:

-a page with information on the Danish Christmas tree including the decorations used and the placement of the tree in the home. Pictures of Debbie’s tree were included.

-the words and music to “Nu Har Vi Jul Igen.”

-a picture of a Danish Christmas tree being decorated for the children to color

-a page talking about Danish Christmas cones with directions for each child to find a cone on the tree with their name on it. The cones were filled with pepper nodder.

-the story of Danish Christmas plates with a game to count how many Christmas plates were on Debbie’s kitchen wall and a place to describe their favorite plate.

-an abbreviated family tree where children could write in their name and the names of brother/sisters, mother and father and grandparents.

Each year the children get a new packet with new information, activities and games.

As a result each year the children learn more about Denmark and their heritage. No longer are the little “elves” scattered throughout the house just Christmas decorations. Now they are Danish nisse. No longer is the pork roast and red cabbage just dishes of food. Now they are 7

part of the traditional Danish Christmas dinner.

No longer are the red and white flags on the Christmas tree just more garland. Now they are the flags of the homeland of relatives.

In the binder kept by Debbie information on Danish heritage continues to be updated. She has added pictures of relatives, back to Carl Hansen Larsen and Gertrude Marie (Andersen) Larsen who came to the United States 1892 to begin their new lives in a new land. Recently Debbie has begun a new section on German traditions as well. Debbie’s family, like many of our families,

reflects the diversity that is America.

Thanks to the efforts of our Sister, Debbie Henke, the youngsters in her family are welcoming their Danish roots into their hearts and learning they are a part of something greater, their Danish heritage. What a wonderful idea! If we all create such a binder to teach the young in our families, I see ahead a bright future for the Danish Sisterhood of America.

Update from Lodge #3, Davenport, IA

On May 11, 2017 six members of Lodge #3 met at St. Peter’s Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sheffield, IL. Betty Lodsdon of the Sheffield Historical Society led us on a most interesting tour of the church and gave us each handouts with information about St. Peter’s history and current use.

St. Peter’s congregation of Sheffield was organized, before any other Danish Church in Illinois, the first service in 1868. Frescoes on the ceiling are original as are the chandeliers and the organ was built for this church. The church

is heated by two potbellied stoves and you feel the history of this Danish treasure as you are amazed at how fortunate we are to have this gem less than 2 hrs from our homes.

The church is still used for weddings, funerals and baptisms but no regular services are held, other than an annual Christmas service. The mural behind the altar was painted in 1904, artist unknown. We all appreciated the chance to learn about St. Peter’s Danish Evangelical Lutheran church and are thankful for all the caring individuals that have kept this history intact. Visit if you can!

We are looking forward to our district convention in MN in September and hope several members can make the trip.

Bicycle taxis, also known as rickshaws or pedi-cabs are another popular form of transportation in Copenhagen.

You can take numerous daytrips in and around Copenhagen.

Some trips include Klampenborg, Bellevue Beach and Dyrehaven; Roskilde and the Viking Ship Museum; and Amager Beach.

Denmark has a Cycling Embassy. They were founded in 2009 and work together to promote bicycling and communicate cycling solutions and know-how.

Requesting/processing a funeral benefit for a certificate holding member.

Address Changes

We felt it would be helpful to the Lodge secretaries and member’s families if I posted the instructions for requesting a funeral benefit.

When one of our certificate holding members passes away, their beneficiaries are entitled to their funeral benefit. The member must have been a current/active member (dues paid) at the time of their death for the benefit to be valid.

The funds will be issued to the beneficiary noted in the member’s record with the National Secretary. If the noted beneficiary passed away prior to the member, the check will be issued to the Estate of…

Many lodge secretaries/treasurers manage the request to process a funeral benefit for the family.

The process:

• Send a certified copy of the member’s

death certificate

• Provide contact information of the bene ficiary or executor of the estate

• National Secretary verifies valid mem bership and records the members’

passing
