Summer is here, and I hope you are doing well navigating through the changes of your daily routine. Although we are practicing social distance and are unable to have meetings and events in person, I want to remind you that as sisters we can reach out to one another to boost our spirits, and check in with each other.

As you know we are fundraising for the Sisterhood archival project at the Museum of Danish America (MoDA) in Elk horn, Iowa. Our goal is $43,000 and so far, our efforts have raised about $11,000. We had planned on fundraising at the District Conventions, but as those plans changed due to unforeseen circumstances, we now have an opportunity to take advantage of our partnership with National Foundation for Danish America (NFDA). You are able to do this by pledging funds to the Sisterhood through the NFDA site and President Bruce Bro’s hike across the Colorado Trail. As you will see on the website there are many different organizations you can pledge to, but all funds that we receive from this pledge will be used exclusively for our archival project at MoDA.

You can of course continue to make donations straight to MoDA or National Treasurer, Linda Brooks. When doing so, please be sure to list that the funds are for the Danish Sisterhood Archival Project. This way we can be sure that the funds are utilized for the purpose intended.

Having just celebrated Grundlovsdagen in June, I figure it is appropriate to wish you all Happy 4th of July or Happy Canada Day this month. I hope you celebrate your adopted country as proudly as you do Denmark.

Summer has swiftly made its way into Minnesota and, I’m sure, across the U.S. I’ve been working in my small garden throughout this spring and Happy July Birthday to: summer. In Memory of Alice Louise Jorgensen from her daughter, Melanie Berg

Alice Louise Jorgensen joined the Danish Sisterhood Lodge #40 on April 10th, 1963. (This was the year I graduated from Washington State University.) My Mormor, from Esbjerg, passed away in 1962. My mother had never been to Denmark and wanted to connect with her Danish relatives SO, she joined the Danish Sisterhood to be a part of the Charter trip planned by Wilhelmina Parker, a travel agent friend of hers. She decided that would be a good college graduation gift for us.

WOW! Such a treat for me to go to Denmark with my beloved mother. (Wilhelmina introduced me to a Danish bachelor on the plane who I ended up marrying!) My mother fully enjoyed and actively participated in the Danish Sisterhood. Many remembered her for her whit and friendly manner.

She wasn’t at all bashful in offering her opinion in a caring way. Mom was born December 9th, 1908 and went to live with the LORD on October 18th, 2003. She was sharp all those years and was loved by everyone she knew. She knew many, many people because she was an active member of a variety of groups. She was my best friend!

Many times when I read the resolutions in the Danish Sisterhood News, I would think, “I should send in something about my mom.” I have just retired and found this to FINALLY submit.

We want those here to remember what you’ve done, While serving the Sisterhood and sharing a pun.

Washington Hall had many fond memories for you, As your parents were active in the Brotherhood too!

You always had a smile and a joke, In your day, you entertained many folk.

You enjoyed the West Seattle circle a great deal, The fellowship with other Danes has great appeal!

The Danish heritage you gave has been VERY special to me, I’ve grown to love the entire Danish family.

May we all continue to be proud of what you and

others have done, To make our Danish Sisterhood number 1!

Resolution DSS Hygge #188 lost one of our charter members on May 25, 2020, a dual member, whose primary membership is in Unity #75.

Anne McNeely, Hygge member #7022 was born in Rome, NY on September 5, 1942. She joined Hygge on August 25, 2018 as a Dual member at our chartering. Anne was recognized as the lodge’s Outstanding Sister earlier this year.

Greetings from Lodge #75 Enumclaw, WA Danish Sisterhood Lodge #75 and ‘Friends of the Danish Hall’ had a fantastic year of fundraising in 2019 to support our 120 year old Danish Hall.

This year, like past years, it was a well-attended event with over 30 people, lots of laughter and good company. We had a turkey dinner, played games, had a gift exchange, sang songs and told stories. Everyone had a wonderful time. A smashing success!

A Note from the Heartland Hello Sisters of the Danish Sisterhood in America!

As are all of you, we in the Heartland have not been able to meet as lodges or as a District. Therefore, last week the Heartland Danish Sisterhood met via conference call. In addition to the pandemic we are all experiencing, we lost our beloved secretary/treasurer, Jane Paulsen, in January. Jane had been a sisterhood member since 1986! Trying to replace her has been very very difficult. We had to put two people into the job she did by herself for many years! We conferred with the Heartland

Brotherhood and during this conference call we decided that it would be in the best interest of our organization to cancel our fall convention. What a time this has been! Nothing like this has ever happened and hopefully we can get back to a more “normal” time by the time of the convention of 2021. I for one am ready to move on! Here’s to 2021!

Dan K Andersen: “Fake News!”

by Donna Christensen Thomas, National DSS Historian While browsing in my hometown newspaper some months ago, I stumbled across an interesting article. Actually it was the headline that caught my attention with the words “Fake News”! I was surprised and intrigued about what that might have meant “back in the day” in 1947 in Audubon, Iowa. As it turned out, there had been a program presented that week by a Danish newspaper editor and his wife telling of his historical experiences and underground activities in Denmark during the German occupation. They also showed a film about peacetime Denmark.

Dan Kristian Andersen was born to Ernest Peter Andersen and Louise Marie Hanne (nee Jensen) Andersen at Hornbæk in January 1870, the eldest of at least five children. He attended the University of Copenhagen school of journalism; later he also studied at the University of San Francisco. He had been a foreign correspondent in Europe and was assistant editor of the Copenhagen bureau of the United Press.

He spoke Danish, German, English, French and Italian.

In 1933 in southern Italy, he was interviewing a man who had been a best friend of the fascist Mussolini, but who had turned against him. The Italian police jailed Andersen and his colleague for about three weeks, convinced that they were communists. They were able to get the guards to get them some liquor which they “invited the guards” to share with them. When the guards become sufficiently drunk, they were able to get the keys and escape into the mountains in the night.

He told this story:

“During the German occupation of Denmark, Editor Andersen relates, he hooked a microphone to his radio in the newspaper office, running the mike from his apartment above the office. When Nazi soldiers would come into his office to waster time or “fool around” he would make false broadcasts through the radio, telling

of various strategic German cities that were “Falling to the advancing allies.” This was done to demoralized the soldiers.

He also gave instructions to underground workers concealed within the news stories he wrote. For instance, perhaps every third word when read out loud become the message. He also helped the Allied efforts by mounting and concealing a 35mm camera in the window of the newspaper office which was focused on a certain spot on the sidewalk, Whenever one of the 20 Gestapo agents in Hornbæk walked by, the shutter snapped. In this way, he got photos of wall the secret police. When the Allies entered the town, he turned the photographs over to them in order to capture them. Having been forewarned of the Allied bombing of the Copenhagen Gestapo headquarters. He hid in a building across the street from it where was also the only one to get movies of the bombing.

While he was sometimes suspected by the Germans of his underground activities, but could always talk his way out of it when confronted.

In 1936, he had been the editor and owner of two newspapers in the Hornbæk, Fredericksborg area just outside of Copenhagen.

This trip in 1947 was his seventh trip to the USA. Dan and second wife Mary, who was born in England, had lived in Vancouver, British Columbia.Their Declaration of Intent for citizenship was filed in Seattle in 1929. He died in February 1981 in San Francisco. I do not know if his wife was a Danish Sisterhood member. I will check that when I am able to access the records at the Museum of Danish America Genealogy Center.

Editor Andersen and his wife toured to over sixty ciites on this tour and were often sponsored by the Danish Brotherhood.

Gingered Pear and Danish Cheese Salad (Oste Salat med Infefær Pære)

½ c. mild Danish cheese, such as Fontina, Creamy Havarti or Swiss 1.2 c. Danish Blue cheese 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tsp. Dijon-style mustard ½ tsp. finely grated gingerroot 3 Tbsp. olive oil 1.4 c. water Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 2 ripe, firm pears 4 stalks celery, thinly sliced Watercress and celery leaves, for garnish Cut along the border for your very own recipe card! Grant Applications Due The second round (August Round) of applications for the Betty Hansen Educational Grants are due August 31. These grants (up to $500 each) are available to members and children of members who are enrolled less than full-time at an approved school and have taken a course at that school. They are also available to members and children or members who are taking a seminar or course in Danish Language or Danish Culture/ Heritage. There were two grants given out in the January Round. Cut cheeses into small cubes; set aside.

Dressing: Whisk together lemon juice, mustard and gingerroot. Gradually whisk in olive oil, then water. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Just before serving, peel, core and slice pears lengthwise. Arrange sliced celery on plates; then place prepared pears atop celery. Top with cheese cubes, dividing equally. Garnish with celery leaves and watercress. Makes 4 servings.

NOTE: Canned pears in light syrup, well-drained, can be substituted for fresh pears. Or, substitute fresh sliced apples.

A Reminder about The Hiking Viking Fundraiser Thank you to all of you who have supported our Museum Archival Project.

As of June 16, $10,755.24 has been raised.

This summer let’s raise funds together for our Museum of Danish America Archival Project! The National Foundation for Danish America (NFDA) has invited the Danish Sisterhood to participate in their “Hiking for Danish America” fundraiser.

Starting June 29th, Bruce Bro, NFDA President, will traverse the 500-mile Colorado Trail for six to eight weeks from Waterton Canyon, southwest of Denver, to Durango. The “Hiking Viking” will navigate to 13,271 feet above sea level (or higher) and keep above 10,000 feet for most of the trail.

Participating in the Hike for Danish America Fundraiser is easy! All you have to do is:

1. Promote the “Hike for Danish America” fundraiser to your membership.

2. Encourage individuals or your lodge to pledge per mile hiked or a flat amount.

3. Send pledged funds to DSS National Treasurer, Linda Brooks (at the conclusion of the hike).

NFDA will be tracking pledges for participating organizations like ours. You will receive notification of Bruce’s successful completion of the trail and a reminder of your pledge amount. NFDA plans to make this campaign fun and inclusive for donors and partnering organizations: • Bruce will engage during the hike on social media and the website by posting pictures and videos as he progresses • Each partnering organization (DSS!) will be featured during Bruce’s hike through social media • Organizational pledges will be included on their website and weekly email There’s still time to pledge! Danish Sisterhood Membership Records Invaluable Sources for Genealogy

As so many of us have been “hunkered down” in our homes more than usual over the past few months, what have you been doing to keep yourself busy, entertained and hopefully “sane”? I know a good number of people have been pursuing their family research during this time. I would encourage you to start and continue writing things down about your life, ancestors, etc. to be able to inform, document, and share more about your family heritage. In working with the membership records of the Danish Sisterhood at the Museum of Danish America Genealogy Center for the past several years, I have come to realize what an exciting treasure trove we have in this collection! We have been extracting the information and typing it into Excel spreadsheets.

One of the frequent challenges in researching one’s ancestry is often the maiden names and other information of the women. Women are often referred to in genealogy as “the hidden half of the family” as we try to address these challenges.

Especially prior to fifty years ago and further back, women often were not so well documented in the records or perhaps not included in family business matters or were addressed differently than what is commonly used today.

Have you ever seen an obituary which has a headline of “Mrs. J P Jensen died...” or the motherin-law of ...as the newspaper headline”? I have! Did she have a name?!? Sometimes I hold my breath not sure if her name will even be mentioned in her own obituary! Often times it will only be her nickname and not the entire given name and often without her maiden name or her parents names, place of birth, etc. This is often true if it is the offspring of the family member providing the information for the obituary. While I’m sure they tried their best, often the information is vague or simply wrong. While waiting in an airport and travelling for the Thanksgiving holiday a few years ago, I remember being called by the daughters of a distant cousin asking what their father’s parents’ names were for his obituary and other death related documents! They may have signed as Mrs. with their husband’s names. I had made a trip out to California to visit him and help them celebrate his 91st birthday six months prior to his death.

In our Danish Sisterhood membership re-

cords, we have an excellent first hand (i.e primary) source as the new members were asked for their full name, date and place of birth, etc. Since most of the members had the connection to Denmark and great knowledge and interest in Denmark, the response was rarely “Denmark” as you might find in the U.S. census records, newspapers or other U.S. documents, for instance, but was usually very specific as to the exact place: parish, county, etc. I have also found that they also gave very complete information of their family members as beneficiaries (especially since the Danish names and surnames often were so common. Can you imagine if the benefits were paid out to the wrong person, but with a very similar name? They made very great efforts to have this information current and correct so there are often updates and old information has a line through it, but is still recorded in the Excel spreadsheets as part of the record. Most often there is also a date when this change was made so that helps you with the timeline of when and where to find additional records that would corroborate the information. They also kept this information and what relationship existed to the beneficiary (e.g. parents, husband, son/daughter, niece, or other connection) along with their mailing address and you start building their family tree with this benficiary information and relationships.

If a Danish Sisterhood member were a longtime member, you can often see the evolution in the events of her lifetime and can sketch out a hypothetical timeline of her life. Perhaps she joined early in her life and named her parents as the beneficiaries, then husband after she married, then her children if she were widowed. Then you need to search for the documents which will either confirm or refute your hypothesis.

I have had several requests for information which may be found in the Danish Sisterhood records. I am not currently able to access them because of COVID-19, but expect to be able to do so soon, perhaps in the next couple of weeks. If there is something that I might be able to look up for you, just let me know. The Museum of Danish America Genealogy Center has wonderful resources and a great deal fo experience in doing Danish research.

Tivoli Lodge Updates A Dane good time was had by all at our monthly lodge komsammen held online June 11, 2020. We learned about Sankt Hans Aften and Grundslovdag, both summer events happening in June in Denmark. Thanks again to our resident song leader, John Rasmussen, who taught us a Danish song often sung around the Midsommar bonfire.

DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels� posted.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you would be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category are welcome to participate by donating $1000 to the Danish Sisterhood, which can be sent to the National Treasurer.
